So... I never knew about this place for brunch. Wow, one of the better brunches Ive had period. We had the shrimp and grits and the vegan biscuits and gravy. To sum our meal up...as the kids would say...it slapped!! It was so damn good. The shrimp and grits came with two polenta cakes. Then smother in a creamy sauce, and topped with a pile of shrimp and bacon. You cant go wrong! The shrimp had a Cajun seasoning on them that tasted great with the cream sauce. The grilled toast points were a perfect addition to soak up some of the sauce.I only sampled some of the vegan biscuits and gravy. From what I tasted the gravy was rich and flavorful. The tofu scramble was seasoned well and it had a nice mix of peppers and onions it tasted pretty good.Overall I highly recommend this place for bunch.
Decided to have brunch...we ordered shrimp and grits, korean BBQ corned beef hash, french toast and the vegan biscuits and gravy. The grit cake was really delicious and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. The korean bbq was very tasty...the meat was tender and flavorful.French Toast was good but nothing special. Ask for the Whiskey Maple wing sauce to rat with em instead of the plain maple syrupThe vegan biscuits and gravy were so sage-y and savory. We had 2 orders of grits and 3 alcoholic drinks and 3 sides of bacon for $108 without the tip. Lotsa food and great atmosphere....Oh and if you are a hotsauce person...they serve 2 dogs hot sauce....loved em all..didnt try the super hot one though.
Only complaint and it is very small. They only had 1 bartender for the night, and she had a ton of people to help. She did a great job, but it was tough getting service. Otherwise, everything was great! Food was really good and the show was solid! Under the Rug, Basic Printer, and Odd City were all fantastic. Great place for a small show!
Quaint place and the food was absolutely delicious. Located at the beginning of Corktown, it was the perfect spot to stop by before we had to get to our show for the evening! I had the Vietnamese Salad and mini Jambalaya. Ask for the black garlic habanero sauce to try on your tofu! My husband had the Catfish Po Boy and that was delicious as well. Definitely a good place for a delicious bite. 😋
Mallory, the bartender/server, was one of the best ever, anywhere. The food was incredible! Service great! We were there way early to see incredible bands. We live over an hour away but will be making Lager House a regular place! Thank you!
Laid back dive bar kind of atmosphere! Love going for Saturday and Sunday brunch! The whole team is amazing, and after they meet you the first time, they treat you like family.
Dont let these photos on google fool you. The food was great and so was the service. Im visiting from out of town and a friend recommended it to me. I got the Corktown classic and sweet potato fries. Hot, fresh, fast and a big portion. The bartender was great too. I recommend it!
Came here for a wedding reception on Saturday afternoon. Great little dive spot located right off the freeway and away from the crowded areas. Good tap offering and drink specials get you in the door and food was unique and delicious. Lots of live music bookings at night but didnt make it it that late.
Not the best place for a large group lunch I didnt make the plan not sure they knew we were coming. The service was great for a one lady bartender/waitress. But Food came out a few at a time so some were eating while others waited.
This place is the bomb! The service is always wonderful and THE FOOD IS AMAZING!!! I get the black and blue burger every time. I swear it was sent down from the gods above. I have never had a better burger In. My. Life! The burger gives me feelings… if you know what I mean ;) in all seriousness though, great place, great vibes, BEST BURGER IN TOWN!!!
Ive been going to the Lager house for over 20 years for live music (mainly Metal 🤘🏻), but just found out they serve brunch! The food was actually pretty good and the server was nice! They were at capacity for seating so we only had a teeny table thats usually only for drinks and I helped myself to a shelf with S&P, hot sauce and ketchup. Definitely a good little place for live music!
I just walked in to order a Togo order. The bartender was the only one there and very rude. She told me to wait 5 minutes while she caught up. She moved extremely slow and after waiting 15 minutes, I left without even getting to order. I use to be a regular, but since ownership changed each experience has been worse then the last.
Cheap bar food and ales. They serve one lager under the Lager House brand and have many other drafts. There were awesome punk and metal bands playing on the night when I went. Definitely a dive, but a good one.
Great vegan late night options coupled with the regular menu. Had guests from out of town that loved the wings! Way to make Detroit look good Lager House!
Shalom shramily, let me hip you on this hidden to most bar/resty in corktown off of Michigan Ave. Called Lager House, This place rocks literally. They have live band performances almost everyday showcasing talent from all over the country, and it’s all genres of music rock bands, soul, R&B, etc….” But that’s not the only cool thing I want to enlighten you about it’s the cool variety of vegan options! They have vegan chili, pulled jackfruit sandwiches, Vegan burritos, Jackfruit nachos, Jackfruit Jambalaya, Tempeh Po‘boy Sandwiches, and a few other items and the have food for the meat eaters as well I personally don’t eat meat so I can’t mention anything on that portion of the menu but I’m sure it’s great and cooked with love as well the parking is limited in the front of the establishment but it is free parking in the back of this dive bar I think that’s what it’s classified as don’t quote me 😂 I’ve never seen anyone who was in a wheelchair ♿️ in this place but I’m sure that they would try their best to accommodate them like anyone else if your sensitive with your diet then I recommend asking the bartender to ask the chef how food is prepared but it never hurt me with anything so go for it…” as always enjoy and save me some….”
Great times at the 53 Thieves concert! Drinks were great and the food was delicious. Sam was the best bartender ever!!
I had the shrimp n grits I wasnt used to how it came and I wasnt too keen on the crunchy exterior but it was good. Soft and buttery on the inside. Decent atmosphere. The only thing I didnt like is when the dog came in and was roaming around.. I know I know folks have animals in their homes so its not any different and it was very well mannered but still this is a public eatery.
I really liked the atmosphere of this place. The menu had a large selection of vegetarian and vegan options. We had two different kind of vegan burgers and both tasted ok but it wasn’t the greatest
Good drinks, great music...what more can ya ask for from a bar & venue in the Corktown section of Detroit? Located about a mile west of Downtown Detroit on Michigan Avenue, PJs Lager House has a unique feel and has played host to some of Detroits finest musical acts and artists. Theyre also a well known venue for national bands & musicians traveling through Michigan. Its definitely worth checking their website to see whos playing and making the trip!
Vegan breakfast options are great, good pricing and good sized portions. Always fresh, tasty and hot. Rarely a wait for a table on Saturday mornings. Small staff so be patient with them, the food and price point is worth it.
They always have amazing live bands but it gets so packed in the main room that I end up watching the show on the TV screen in the other room. ! : (
This edgy bar was a great place for lunch. Went there on a Saturday and their brunch was amazing. The corned beef hash was probably the best I have ever had. All their food was very flavorful. I hear their sandwiches are also to die for... wouldnt expect amazing food from a lager house, but I would recommend.
Pretty cool spot, my pup was welcomed , jambalaya was fire wow !! Best item on menu !!
Dont let the folding tables and hard rocker decor detour you from trying out this place. Came for brunch and had the shrimp and grits. It was excellent! The fried grits triangles smothered in the Cajun cream sauce was both delicious and original. This place also have great vegan and vegetarian options.
Just stopped in today to try it out. Small quaint place. The service was fantastic and the food was outstanding. The Gumbo and the Jambalaya were Very tasty. Also tried the Bourbon Maple wings. These were some of the best wings ever had! Had a crunchy outside fried skin, and the sauce was spot on.Will be back for all the other items on there menu.
Visited for the first time to watch a few bands play. The atmosphere is unlike most other bars Ive been to. Its energetic but not wild. Its an enjoyable place to be.
This place was very unique. The first and most important thing is that the food was amazing. I went with a group of at least ten people. We were all served in a decent time. I ordered the fried pickles and they were definitely hand breaded and phenomenal. The onion rings were also made in house and were great. All the food served was very good. This place also has a stage for live music and a little record store in the basement. Very cool place. Will definitely visit again if in the area.
This was an interesting pub, oddly enough I got to walk the whole downstairs....think the only place I didnt get in was the girls bathroom and the kitchen!!!!For a down town setting this is youthful place, has a very strong college town feel to it. Not so much downtown. Which is very nice, had some good onion rings... Didnt eat much more than that..Ooooh and if you plan on. Parking in the back that pot hole is SERIOUSLY deep!!! Thought about dragging the dumpster over it....that puddle is deceivingly deep. Drunk trap.
Great service. Great food. Great people. Thank you for such an awesome experience !!! Can’t wait to return.
A great place for live music. Cheri Clair books some solid acts. National and local.
8/28/23 Have now been back and had a beer there, and true to the owners word below, the situation does indeed seem to be fixed. In fact this time the Oberon was carbonated as it should be and laced the glass beautifully. My heartfelt thanks! Food score adjusted above to 5 stars.[Original review] One star for food reflects only on the draft beer system. It seems that all the draft beers come barely carbonated. When Bells Oberon comes to the table with no head and utterly flat theres something wrong. Seems that the CO2 pressure and line balancing needs to be looked at. Guinness shows fine nitrogen bubbles but it was otherwise flat. Once they seem to have run out of glassware so the second Guinness came in a plastic cup. The Heineken I got in the bottle was light struck and served without a glass. Service was friendly, food was fine and the location is good for me. I will return but would greatly appreciate someone checking the beer situation for both draft and bottles.
Great food and the best late night food in Detroit. Service is sometimes lacking at the bar, but it just depends on whos working.
Vegan options😍 fries were delicious. had a good time here!
Best all American burger I have had in a while. No condiments are needed. Perfect! Beer selection was great!
Love the Lager House, Sam is an awesome bartender and the food selection is uniquely extensive for the area. I highly recommend the crispy tofu! They also have gluten free and vegan options
Went here for a show. Amazing atmosphere. Great dive bar. Tons of beer and plenty of food as an option.
Awesome experience, everyone is super cool and they let us bring our dog in!
I think I found Jimmy Haffa buried beneath the floor boards, it’s just one of those local pubs where you won’t confuse it for a fancy art deco bar, very Irish, with good beer. Live music on Fridays was fun!
Nothing fancy but good brunch and beer selection
Not enough bartenders on a packed evening, had to wait forever for a drink and I only got mine because another customer sitting at the bar ordered it for me. Very disappointing.Other than that, it is always a good time.
Awesome selection of cheap beer. Thank god we still have some cool dives in the area.
We always end up here after the St. Patricks parade! I live this place, always awesome live music!!
Loved this place!! We saw GA-20 there and it was the perfect venue. I love going to these small bars to see bands, it brings back memories from when I was younger. Drinks were cheap also.
Cool little place! Still great after the new owners took over. Music still cool, food is great, purs are generous! Always a must stop!
Great bar!!! Great food!!!We mistakenly left our leftover box on the table and our wonderful waitress came outside to find us and bring it to us!!!!!!Amazing 🤩
Nice Atmosphere for live shows. I was able to park for free in the lot.
Just attended a concert here and it was the worst venue I have ever been to. The bands were incredible but with no AC and fitting more than 150 people in the venue (way over max capacity) it was so hot people could barely breathe and as someone with health conditions it was completely unsafe. Would never come back. Wasn’t even allowed to open the door without the manager shutting it on us. Someone left the venue throwing up because they couldn’t breathe and it was so hot.
Love everything about this place. Food is fantastic, staff is personable, atmosphere is charming and unique. Easily one of the best spots in the city.(Just a heads up, please update the hours on your website! Came for breakfast at 7:30, went home hungry)
I visited Lager House for a concert. The employees were nice and the venue was an excellent place to see a smaller sized show. Pricing was fair and there were no extra charges or fees. I cannot speak to the food as I did not eat there but other peoples food looked great.
We were in town in Detroit from Chicago for a few days. Our VRBO was located in the Corktown neighborhood. We looked for a place to eat within walking distance from the place. Lager House was what we decided. We got there for lunch. The avocado dippers were fantastic and the B.L.A.T. sandwich was one of the best I’ve ever had…everything was just right on it. Little place you’d miss if you blinked but gem of a bar/restaurant. You won’t be disappointed.
Good food low key chill spot very friendly workers
Cool venue located in the heart of Corktown. Live shows from time to time and good food. Been around for years.
Come here for my vegan burgers--tofu and tempeh. Very nice menu and I prefer it over other vegan restaurants in metro Detroit. (Ok, Mudgies deli is also pretty good). Nice staff too.
Best mimosas and great brunch options!
So friendly and comfy! The food was delicious...fresh, crisp, colorful vegetables in my salad is hard to come by these days. I wonder do they have an organic garden in the kitchen...lol...thanks for a tasty meal...my sister njoyd it too and shes hard to please 🙏
Great bar for great times and shows, and a way better menu than youd expect from a bar, from jambalaya to club sandwiches with even vegetarian pulled jackfruit. Wonderful place, a corktown staple.
Went to see Lamont landers, place overbooked no place to sit couldnt her the show until we went outside!
Great spot for good vibes n good spirits! OMG the vegan options are pretty great. I think it was the vegan biscuits n gravy that wasnt my favorite (whichever dish it was that had th gravy) but regardless this spot has a lot of great beer variety. Only set back is no A/C so if its a busy day in the summer n u dont mind being a bit warm Id recommend this place..For the vegans that dont wanna sit in a prissy over priced restaurant, have a beer n come here lol
My wife and I enjoyed everything. She is vegan and loved the fried avacodo and vegan nachos. I had a burger perfectly cooked and seasoned. Will go back to try more options.
Love this bar….service was amazing food was great. Only gripe is that the cheeseburgers are $14…no chips or anything come with it. My hubby and I paid $2 extra for fries, no problem. My son didn’t want fries and just assumed it came with chips. Meat, cheese and bun $14….stupid prices
Loved the place and the atmosphere….. BUT…. DO NOT PARK IN THE WELL LIT LOT RIGHT BEHIND THE BUILDING!!!! Had our car window busted out along with several others. Which is NOT the establishments fault….. just beware of where you park!!!!!
Awesome food! I’m sad I didn’t get pictures of our meals but they were straight fire! We got the Shrimp Po Boy and a Spicy Chicken Sandwich with Cajun fries. Lemme just say we’ll be back and may just order the same exact thing!
Another awesome Detroit city bar.
We came here for brunch while staying overnight in Corktown. It was so delicious! And the brunch drinks were amazing! Clearly a place where locals hang out and we’re super friendly. My fiancée wanted their vegan options which is what took us here and so glad we went!
So Tuesday is the second day this bar tries a 7am start for breakfast. Hot spot for weekend brunches and bands later on. Place is clean, the bread is fresh, and the breakfast sandwich, one of those avocado, greens, and fried egg concoctions is good. I mean really good. Messy tho. $14 plus a coffee. Place still has some of that old Detroit charm: high ceilings, the tin is in fantastic condition, nice inobtrusive bar, and comfortable. Have to see if I can pull out a spunky date and try an evening. 5 metered parking spaces in front, 50 in back for free. Door along side only for band equipment. Safe to say, Ill be back. Mimosa sounds good. Not on a workday.
It was a pretty basic bar. The list of beers to choose from was solidly alright. The performance space is tucked off to one side which meant it was an awkward combination of people talking over the band and the band trying to entertain a distractible crowd. Theres nothing to disqualify it but also not much beyond a great list of beers to help it stand out.
Had lunch at PJ’s yesterday with friends and loved it. Great atmosphere and service, great beer selection, and many vegan food options, which were delicious. We are from out of town and will definitely try and go there again next time we are in Detroit.
Amazing food with a twist, best brunch Ive ever had! Fun and old-school environment. A true gem!
We waited two hours to get our food after ordering. It would have been appreciated if someone gave us a heads-up that the kitchen was backed up beforehand but there was no communication from staff. Additionally, the server was incredibly rude when I mentioned the issue. I understand the struggles of a short-handed staff, however, this was unforgivable. It costs nothing to communicate and just be decent and considerate to people.
Dropped in for weekday lunch yesterday and had terrific food. We recommend the gumbo, and the fried pickles were delicious! PJs is open at now on Mon/Wed/Friday breakfast and lunch. Live music on Fridays 5:30-7:30.
Quirky. A really interesting dive bar with live music, better than divey food, odd decor and quirky personalities. The food was seriously better than expected but the service was famously awful. The kitchen had one person working in it and there was only one bartender. No wait staff, no assistants. Oh well, the food was great and I had a nice time. Keep an open mind and you will be okay.
Best bar I visited in Detroit. I drove an hour for the Gumbo. They only serve brunch til 3pm. I was so sad when the bartender came back and said they would make it for me. The owner even came out to check on us. Absolutely the best gumbo I have eaten. Amazing! Megan Page was the wonderful bartender and she also gave us so much info about the upcoming Tigers game that night that we stayed and bought tickets!
The Korean Hash was amazing, I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting the flavors to be so great! My husband had the shrimp n grits and loved it!
Very cool bar and nice atmosphere!!
Love this place. Its really nice to be able to go see a band, get a great beer and eat vegan food. Brunch is awesome. It has a cozy atmosphere. We love seeing bands here but for the love of god get a new sound guy!
Utterly dreadful service. Was given an attitude when they tried to gaslight me into believing that my fries were cajun-seasoned when they were most certainly not. Dude proceeds to rip my carry out box away, marches back to the kitchen, brings it back and tells me he’s “dumped” the seasoning on there (hardly). Might as well have stood up on the counter, pulled down his pants and taken a dump in front of me. Manager or whatever offers me a “drink to-go”(???) I mean come on. The quality of their po’boy is the only saving grace here. I’ll never be back.
Staff will bounce customers if other customers dont like them. Gross policy. Poor bar service, too, if you can manage to snag a drink before they give you the heave arbitrarily. I guess if youre the Karen, though, its probably a pretty cozy watering hole.
Pretty solid food and cool speakeasy vibe. Be sure to let the waitstaff know if you need to be speedy as they give you plenty of space to relax. Good burgers, the Cajun fries are definitely spicy, just like the history of the place!
Went there to watch JB and friends performance... first time in the bar, extremely clean atmosphere no old bar smell and the air wasnt stuffy... Good vibes, I definitely will be back wondering if I can perform there soon as well! 5 stars!!!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place to death! I have been a patron here well over a decade. Its one of my favorite places in the D! Amazing live shows! Make sure to buy some records from their record shop downstairs.
I love this place! Great food w excellent vegan options for breakfast lunch and dinner. Chill vibes & good people.
Nice vibe, nice staff, you can even sit and kick it with the owner about the history of the building or anything else for that matter. Service is great, friendly, and fast. Food is okay, but they have interesting pop up dinners by chef chefs. Nice beers on tap and bottled. Some local brews.
Tre the Gin Martini. Tasty generous portion. Love their blue cheese burgher prepared just the way you like it. Highly recommend
Love this place. Great selection of craft beers, Paul makes a mean Manhattan and is always incredibly nice. Kid friendly and good food (including vegan options and really amazing gluten free bread). Music venue too some nights and a pre-prohibition era bar. What else could you want?
I went to P.Js cuz they served vegan food and it was close to the hotel. Its basically a dive bar that consists of two rooms - the bar and another space that has a stage for live music and a ping-pong table. (!) I ordered a vegan Po Boy sandwich with what were supposed to be Cajun fries but I think I got regular fries instead. Overall, not bad. I was thankful for the vegan grub and I had a local brew to boot that was decent. Plus, I got in a few rounds of table tennis with the bar tender and another patron so an evening well spent.
Gave PJs a second chance. So glad I did!! Previous visit was slow and not tasty. Totally opposite experience to his time. Delish food. Great service. Invested in their space. Great vegan spot!!
Great Vegan brunch options. Best brunch spot. PJ is just a good-hearted one-of-a-kind individual. Its a bar thats been there since the bad times... and its got a record shop in the basement. Great sounds for live bands.
TheNew Orleans Specialties I had were very good! Namely, a cup of gumbo and the shrimp po boy. Dessert was compliments of celebrating Melvin Davis 80th B-day: Chocolate cake. Melvin, The Wrong Numbers and The Gabriel Brass Band were all fantabulously splendiforous, musically speaking. Great place for food, live music and having a good time!
Been going there for a long time. A wide selection of bands come through there to match their wide selection of food and drinks that are really good. Glad that PJs holding on, keeping the rock alive.
Three of us ordered corned beef hash for takeout breakfast. All were simply awful. Corned beef so overcooked and chewy you could barely stick it onto your (metal) fork. Potatoes soft ... should have been discarded and replaced with a fresh batch and never served to us. Rye toast was marbled with pumpernickel and soggy. Paid extra for biscuits that actually tasted BAD. Really just one of the worst breakfasts Ive had recently and a total waste of $51.00.
I love pj lagers. If you are looking for a place with awesome local bands, cheap drinks, and full of cool and interesting people, this is your place. They have an awesome patio where you can take a break from jamming out to sweet music and have a smoke if thats your thing. They also have a really cool record store in the basement. If you are hungry, they have pretty decent food as well. Its always a blast coming here.
Great vegan options, reasonably priced food and drinks. Great location and interior. Love the back patio. The brunch seems to have gone downhill just a bit, but maybe I went on an off day. Love this place.
Had a great time Monday night enjoying the live music , as well as some great eats! Loved the deep fried panko breaded avocado wedges they were spicy and delish! My mushroom burger was fabulous as well!
Caution: menu states vegan and gluten free items but they do not have dedicated fryers. Items are cross contaminated. Your Kitchen Manager stated you fry gluten items in same oil as gluten free items like your French fries. This could be deadly to people with allergies especially since you state your fries are gluten free.
They are supposed to have great vegan fare, and we were excited to try it, but our server made it completely obvious from the get-go that she did not want us there. Eventually another server took our order, only to have our cranky server return a few minutes later to inform us that the kitchen was closed for another hour and they wouldnt start making our food until then. The sign on the door said the kitchen opened at 11:00 a.m. , And we were there at 3 p.m.. The server didnt mention the kitchen being closed to us when she brought our menus. It wasnt mentioned to us when our order was taken. We wasted at least a 1/2 an hour of rude treatment by a cranky server that could have been saved had this location updated their website, their sign, their menu, or taught their wait staff to at least have the decency to tell people that food isnt available when giving them a menu.
I was iffy about going here Saturday night for a collection of local Punk rock band performances but Im so glad I did. The excitement picked up as the night went on and being someone new to the punk scene I wasnt exactly sure how to enjoy myself. But after a generous a** serving of bourbon on the rocks from the bar I knew exactly what the hell I was doing. I enjoyed everything from the trippy art on the walls and ceilings to the throwback resale shop in the basement. I was wrong to think Id meet an exclusively white crowd. People of all ages, colors, and genders were here enjoying the night. I will definitely be back.
PJs Lager House is a really great bar for music. The sound was excellent. The food was even better. I docked them one star because the bar tender was the biggest tool on the planet. He had a stupid mustache and was making racist jokes all night.
This was our first time at PJs. Wow! Just wow. I am familiar with the Toledo Ohio music bar scene and this is on par, and above, with the best places I have been in. While waiting we had some food. It was not just random bar food. They ended up being known for their cajun foods. I got the blackened catfish poboy and my wife had the black and blue burger. Both came served with fantastic fries. I could not stop bragging about my sammich to my wife. It was the best bar/pub sammich I have ever had. I tasted my wifes burger, that was cooked to a perfect medium like she asked, and it was great. The bar staff was fast and the beer selection was abundant, both bottles and drafts. I would definitely recommend this place for food to anyone driving through Detroit.By the time our friends band was ready to play we were full of good food and ready for great music. The band, One Ton Trolley, did not let us down. And the in house sound guy did not let me down either. His in house sound level mix was fantastic. And if you listen to enough bar bands, like I have, you come to appreciate a great in house sound guy. Kudos to PJs sound dude! I would definitely recommend this place for both the excellent food and live local music.
Stopped by PJs on a rainy Saturday afternoon and had a few beers. Nice old dive bar. Draft beer selection was ample and service was good. And they are serious about the Covid stuff so bring your mask!!
Visited this place on November 11th. It had a really nice feel on the inside. I ordered the catfish nuggets...omgd so delicious and piping hot food. My friend even raved about the way the kitchen cooked his hamburger. I left my earmuffs and they are at PJs, Im going to order a bite of catfish nuggets tomorrow. :)
I love coming here. The bar staff is all really nice and outgoing. They have live music here quite often. They offer a small menu as well. Always meet new and exciting people hereml.
Ive been here twice now, theres parking out back so make sure to take advantage of that instead of paying to park in the street. Food is pretty good portion wise, beer isnt bad either. As for shows there, the sound guy will work with the band to make them sound better which is nice compared to some larger venues where they barely care. The back is where they set up merch so most of the tables are still able to be used for food and drinks.
The food smelled so good in the kitchen that I got a basket of fries. They were the best fries I have had in a long time.
The kitchen in this place is absolutely unbelievably good to the point it doesnt make sense. Music is good too. Drink prices are reasonable.
I honestly cant pin how long Ive been coming here for beers and awesome local bands but as Ive entered the back end of life I love that I can still come here for an amazing brunch. I love that in adapting to the New Corktown of modern Detroit they didnt change the aesthetics or rock n roll roots of the place.Im constantly dallying with the idea of being a vegetarian and I love that they have vegetarian options. Ive been here a couple of times for brunch, so this will encompass all the food Ive tried.First up, the Shrimp & Grits. This has been a current phase Ive been going through, so whenever I see it on the menu I am bound honor and fealty to order it. Ive gone though this with Steak & Eggs, Benedicts, and most recently Chicken and waffles, so I wonder how long this will last. This was a a different way than Ive had it before. Instead of the grits being made in the traditional way, it was formed into a grits brick and the sauce almost like a soup or broth with the shrimp in it. Completely different than Ive had in the past, but no less delicious. Whatever the sauce they use to flavor the dish is, it is wonderful and the shrimp is perfectly cooked. On a previous trip I tried the hash and it was another dish I really enjoyed. One if my biggest complaints lately has been what I consider the undercooking of taters but these were brilliantly crisp and the combination of spices and flavors spot on.Finally, the Scramble. I know none of these dishes sound especially exciting or unique but I think thats irrelevant when it comes to good food. Ive seen places screw up grilled cheese and tomato soup, so never take delicious for granted. The scramble fits this perfectly. It was a perfect made breakfast that did everything it was supposed to with great flavor and minimal flair. If that doesnt fit the personality of PJs I dont know what does. This is just one of those spots that just feels like home to me and I look forward to every time I get to come back.
They were featuring a pop up BBQ with chicken and ribs and all the fixins. It was amazing food, from the collard greens to the BBQ ribs. Wish I would have bought extra meals to take home.
Great classic Detroit music bar. What you may not know is that they have excellent vegetarian options in addition to yummy pub selections! This meat eater LOVES their tempeh Po Boys and Reubens.
Pjs is a great venue for smaller bands. It’s more of an intimate setting but that can make for an amazing show. It’s one of my favorite venues but they don’t seem to book a lot of good shows.
Vegan-friendly brunch in a dive bar. Several options that are above average. Non-vegan Korean corned beef hash is really good too!
Ive heard the food is great but to me it was just ok. We order food that had avocado and it was mostly black. Food others had looked good so maybe it was just ours that wasnt on point.
Really good food, great beer and nice atmosphere. The Airbnb on the top floor was cosy but warm. We got an extra AC when we arrived but it was still a bit hot when we leaved. Hopefully it is enough if it can be left running for a few days.
I went here 2 weeks ago on a Saturday night and they had The Union Suits and The Alison Lewis band who had traced me and my guest with tunes. Drinks were strong and fairly priced too. Great place to check out new bands.
If you are a local, then you will enjoy PJs. The bartenders arent there to impress you with fancy flower drinks, but will make you strong ones that are paired with good conversation. The Street Beet Vegan Pop-ups are great (get there an hour early though to get a seat), and there is always enough space to sit with a large family or group of friends!
Great food, OK service. 2/3 time Ive been here theyve forgot something I ordered. Good beer selection. The main draw of this place for me is the vegan food options, which are pretty solid.
PJs is exactly what you put into it. Im somewhat new but show my face enough that the bartenders know me. I love that the staff will chat with you about who knows what. Theres always cool music playing and PJ is often roaming about. I come at least once a week for beers, often with food. Food is always good and exactly what I expected. Tonight they had a Dr. Sushi pop up. It was nice to swap a sandwich for a ramen bowl.Order at the bar and keep it simple. Beer, shots or classic cocktails.
Nice little divey bar in Corktown. The staff was a little standoffish until we got to know them. Thats the only reason for the loss of a star. I was ready to rate this place one star upon first impression but they managed to redeem themselves. Fries are pretty darn good too. Check it out!
Big thanks to Craig for making our dining experience awesome! We came from Texas to visit a friend, we called a couple of places to make sure they were vegan but to our surprise 3 out of the 4 restaurants we stopped at closed their kitchen(s) early. A fact which would have been good to know before we stopped in and when we called *apparently kitchens in MI close early if it’s slow. Nevertheless we called PJ’s lager house and they said they were open! So my family of 6 stopped in at 11:38 pm for some vegan food and boy were we relieved to get any food at all. We order the Guinness battered onion rings- they were huge enough for two people! The Mac and cheese, although I am not a fan of blue cheese, an ingredient PJ’s uses in their Mac n cheese I could not stop eating it! It was balanced quite nicely. The Cajun cheese sticks, the vegan queso (as a side) the flavorwas incredible, the texture needed a bit of work it wasn’t velvety like most queso, but flavor wise it was good with a nice peppery kick. The VBLT on wheat which was great the tempeh was cooked great paired with the fresh veggies created a nice balance. The fried pickles were amazing- it was something about the way the Guinness brought a nice airy quality to the what would be dense batter typical fried foods as well as added a depth of flavor to the pickles! Casual place we had breakfast at with good vegan options. Our breakfast wasnt huge and took a while to come out but tasted good and the bloody Marys were very good.
Weve been coming to Lager House for YEARS. A while ago (under different management) it was a little hole in the wall place for unknown musicians to rock out with their friends. But PJ moved in, cleaned it up, renovated a few things and NOW its pretty frickin AMAZING. Its clean, modern, and the local bands have a nice place to melt faces! This is Detroits Corktowns little gem for musicians looking for a place to be heard! John Sinclair as well as many others have been here. Its definitely a historic concert hall and will go down in the books with the likes of the Grande Ballroom and Cadieux Cafe. Check out their website and plan a trip to see some of Detroits finest!
Oh man, i love this place! Ive only been here twice and both times were to see MC Chris. The house was packed from door to door and was still a great time! Drink prices are great, bartenders are friendly and sassy (in great ways)!
The only way it could get better would be by adding a Meatball Sub to the menu.
This joint is pretty much like walking into the coolest friends house with decent pours, good food at a super fair price to portion ... and there’s sweet live music almost ALL the time! Go early, grab drinks - eats and laughs. It’s easy to hang out, and just keep the fun rollin’ into the night with a great cross-cut of live bands. All the way from Detroit original acts to, supporting the diehard road-warrior bands, which gains my respect. This venue also sports a vinyl/thrift shop downstairs in the basement. So be sure to check it out, there’s lots of hidden gems to call your own to sift through if you just need to take a break from being upstairs at the club. Vinyl is not dead, and PJs has you covered! Usually there is a cover/door charge, usually after happy hour. Mostly this door charge is to support the live bands for the night! It’s important to note, PJ’s also throws down many fundraising events and community based activities in this well rounded local hangout. Be sure to hit the sweet beer garden area out back and get your photo taken by the iconic red -white and blue, Wayne Kramer MC5 mural .... and don’t forget to#tag that action ... cause PJs pretty much IS what “Detriot Rock City” was founded on....showcasing local talent and still keeping us happy with great food, drinks, and cool vinyl collection, but most of all ... a welcoming neighborhood feel. This is an interesting. place to land for a few hours when your around the area.
I useto love this place it ussually has good music. This guy PJ bought the place around over a decade ago and fixed it up nice which is cool but ruined the place in my opinion now its totally yuppiefied with lots of jazz, blues and instrumental bands and super liberal yuppies who go there to drink their trust funds. I still go to PJs lager house out of nostalgia i guess cause this is the place where i first learned of all my favorite Detroit bands when i was like 18,19,20. Right now there is a band playing that sounds like the music on the weather channel and there is a guy talking about his cafe he just opened in woodbridge to the black chick next to me who just told me i was white so i wouldnt understand. But she sounds more white them any white people i know. Crappy really badly used records in the basement and the bar food is super overpriced. And now that the bands set is over the staff is blaring top 40 pop and hip hop like Rhiana and Gwen Stephani. This bar /venue has been ruined by progress.
Great Detroit music venue. If you like live entertainment go here. If you like playing live music you should play here. Attentive bar staff and always courteous when I have been here. Great beer and food choices.
Good local watering hole. Moved away 15 years ago and it hasnt changed too much. Great place to see local bands. Coming back after the pandemic.
Old school bar with some of the best acts. Gumbo is great. Fried avacado too. Bartenders are very good. Dont forget to check out record store in basement
Very cool venue to catch a live show and have a beer in Detroit. I had a burger here and I instantly wanted another and if you get noisey check out the small shop they have below and check out the vinylsProperty Features🚹🚺 Public Restrooms🚮 Trash Bins🍔 Food Served Here🛴 Rentable Scooters Occasionally Nearby🎶 Live Shows/Shows🚳🚭🚯🔞 Not Allowed Inside
Tried the vegan Paczki and they were horrible and not to mention highly over priced. The bar tender was very rude and helped numerous patrons ahead of me even though I was there first and had been patiently waiting. I didnt even get an apology.
More than just bar food. Great tasty vegan options, solid drinks and you leave full and happy. Brunch is great but get there early bc they do run out!
Had the pleasure of seeing Jeffrey Lewis and the Voltage perform here! A very compact, intimate venue with a record store in the basement. Amazing food! Great place for a fun night out
I have been to many Hamburger joints over the years but I gotta say I had probably the best burger here than any where else...was there Saturday for The Cramptons Brothers Release Party it was awesome!!! as for the bar itself...this old man cannot handle a small bar with tons of people!!!LOL!!!
Excellent brunch & bar menu in general. the shrimp & grits and vegan biscuits & gravy are delicious.
We had a great breakfast here! The decor was pretty interesting too; I wish that we had been able to see a performance here, it seems like a great venue for live music.
Came here on a Sunday evening pretty chill environment not to loud good food unfortunately no band playing tonight ill have to come back another day but drinks are cheap $7 For a Hendricks gin and tonic, its a pretty small place a locals bar would i come here again... yes.... would i bar hop with a date here.... yes.
Long love PJ. One of the best bars in town. A plus- great music. A plus- great food, one of the best brunch in town.
I had dinner at P J Lager House in Corktown Tuesday with the Downtown Detroit Runners and Walkers. I had the best BLT on fabulous Gluten Free bread. The bread came from Sugar Kisses bakery in Berkley. It was unbelievably good! Thanks for accommodating our dietary needs with this fantastic bread. I will be back often!
Small dive bar with cold beer and live music. I wouldn’t go here for a complex cocktail but a chill spot for a beer with friends.
The food was great. People were great.
Lager House helped us through a last-minute birthday party.. they called in a cook ...the food was delicious and the drinks were nice
If I can remember her name correctly I came in on a very stressful day as we tend to find ourselves at a bar lol.. Anyways I was greeted with such a warm genuine welcome by Megan Paige (forgive if not spelled correctly).. She was super sweet and SO HELPFUL, I was having anxiety n couldnt figure out what I wanted to eat n she helped me figure it out according to dietary/allergy needs.. I give her 5 stars and 5 stars to the chef as well (the tall fella)..DAMN THE FOOD IS ALWAYS GOOD ESPECIALLY THE VEGAN OPTIONS.. MP thank you for being super chill n awesome💋
Best local music around is going to be here. Its a bit of a hipster-ish scene sometimes but their brunch is pretty good. Lots of vegetarian/vegan options.
This place totally shocked me and my family. The food is amazing!!! I have to come back!!!
Nice little bar with a good selection of beers and great entertainment. Gotta love a place that lets their old dogs roam around. Didnt try the food, though so I cant really comment on that.
Funky old time Detroit bar. I was lucky enough to be there when the rapper Lando Chill was in town. Nice show ... particularly because my son played guitar and keyboards. Their national tour continues in Indiana tomorrow. Catch em
Stopped in for lunch, server came and took drink order, brought 1 drink to tablet and never came back with the other! never got to order food.... there was all of 10 people in the place! too busy talking to wait on customers! If 1st impression is lasting! this place sucks big time!
Excellent party safe atmosphere. Everyone is extremely cool. This place is on my continuing rotation of places to go. Nice spot to see good local musicians practicing their craft.
They used to have good Rock bands play all the time 17 years ago, but somehow the hipsters took over and the music acts got weak. Bring back the hard rock and Punk for the love of god. This is Detroit not hipsterville.
Legendary Detroit dive bar. Weekends are hopping, week nights are mostly regulars unless theres a show going on. Live music, both local and national, surprisingly good food. A mainstay of the Detroit rock/punk/indie scene.
Awesome food and service, loved the vibe of the place too.
Its pjs, nothing spectacular aside from the sign that says dont spit on the floor and Donna who lives in the basement. I wouldnt suggest going in for brunch but would recommend the blackened catfish po boy.
One of THE Detroit music venues. Many local bands cut their teeth here, as well as many national touring bands. Good drink prices and food as well. New deck put down in the back, when you need a break from the music or a quick smoke.
If youre thinking of seeing a show here, DO IT! Hard to get closer to the band then this 🤙
Went there to go watch a band it was a very little bar pretty decent nice little Band Room with a dance floor. the only problem I had and why I didnt give t5 stars is the bartenders and waitresses were quite rude and snotty to me and many others that were there
One of the best local bars in old Corktown district near downtown Detroit off of Michigan Avenue. A great place to see bands of all genres and have a good drink or ten!
Great small venue for live music. I saw The Sonder Bombs and it was a great show!
Great bar. The kind you could sit at all day. Good food too.
Love this place. Record store downstairs. Unfortunately we didnt stay for the band because there was a cover.(seen same person at Nancy whiskeys for free)
Surprisingly great food even for its price! Awesome venue as well. New orleans style place
Quirky dive bar. PJs offers everything a dive bar should and more. It has live music and a huge vinyl collection in the basement. Definitely an experience to close down that bar.
Despite what Google says, theyre open and awesome. My mimosa was so fresh that I found an orange seed, which is a compliment and NOT a complaint.
Good little spot to see a show, albeit a bit small for a sell out crowd. Cool atmosphere, history... Generally nice folks.
Had some tasty chicken tenders and watched King Pari live. Was a great night!
One of the best places to see excellent musicians in Detroit. from local garage bands to nationally known talent. PJs is a must visit when traveling to the D.
Great place to see the rock & roll bands.
