The drag show is amazing. However the security staff need to be trained in so many ways. They are extremely aggressive, especially with drunk people that are not doing anything more than standing or going to the bathroom. They wont hesitate in hitting you without reason.Drink prices tend to be higher compared to another clubs in the area. Also the place feels kinda old and dirty.First and last time Ill go there.
I used to love going to this place. It was a go to every time my friends and I wanted to go out. Now it’s always 50/50 every time we go there. The security guards are way too aggressive. I’ve heard them bust down doors on people ACTIVELY going to the bathroom. They don’t let you stand ANYWHERE and tell you to move even if you aren’t in the way of anybody. One time, my friend went to the bathroom to throw up, not even drunk enough to be thrown out or anything. The MALE security guard said “we see her throwing up, she’s gotta go”. We didn’t end up getting thrown out but I’ve had multiple situations like this. Pride was horrible. It was packed like sardines in there and you can’t even move anywhere. It’s not even a gay bar at all, because there’s always straights and teens there. If they changed some of these things, it would be fun.
My female friend and i got our entire bodies felt up at security. Very odd… my black friend didn’t even get checked. He walked in, they looked at him, said “nope” and threw us out. We thought the one safe space we could have would be gay 90s of all places
I been going to the 90’s since i been 18 i took a little time away cause i had moved away but i came back and it felt like nothing changed i feel extremely safe there security does great work on handling things they need to. I go out with my girl’s every now and then. Bartenders are wonderful. Staff just in general are pretty great. I have never not felt safe when being out with friends.
Security was honestly the best part of my experience with this place. Drinks were heavily watered down and overpriced and the floors everywhere but the hallway were so sticky that it kept pulling my shoes off. Dont bother going during pride month it smelled worse than a magic the gathering convention.
I LOVE this place until my Weds night. The bartender was not giving me my correct change back from my drinks I was ordering. I order 2 Coronas and got $2 change back. Order 2 more beers but they were Bud lights and got charged the same $2 change back. I then went down stairs and order 2 more beers and got $4 change back. So the bartender was keeping $2 for himself. I NEVER got this kind of service at the 90s and I spent and tipped a lot that night. This makes me want to NEVER order drinks when I come to visit and someone needs to look into this because dishonesty its a good look for any business. I hope it wasnt because I was a black person or if he just do this too everyone to have money at the end of the night.
We almost missed out because of the previous reviews!!! Do NOT miss out 😂lol. It was such a great time. Don’t do anything you aren’t supposed to and you’ll have a blast. I personally didn’t have a problem with security they actually navigated me to the next mini parts of the club, super nice people if you’re nice back! Don’t act a fool and you won’t have any issues. Tip your bartenders! I will definitely be back 🥰❤️
The music was nice. The show was really fun. The complex is interesting !Had no troubles with security at all.The main negative point : too much straigth people.I go out in a gay bar to be able to connect with other gays. To take my luck sometimes :p its frustrating when most of the clients are not even gay...
1 of my favorite clubs in the world. The atmosphere is always lively. People go to dance & have a good time as opposed to having staring matches from across the room like at many cishet heavy night life spots. The lights, multiple levels, & mixtures of music dependent upon which area you go to inside said club make it a one of a kind experience in Minnesota night life as a whole. They also host a plethora of events that center the LGBTQIA+ community that I’ve been fortunate enough to attend. The pageant near Halloween is one of my favorite Fall events that is hosted in the Twin Cities. As a cishet male myself I advise anyone that’s interested to go enjoy the space, but remember it’s being shared with you by people that are still being treated as less than human because of walking in their truth.
Honestly after reading all of the most recent reviews on Google I was really hesitant to go.We went anyways, at the door the security gaurd asked if he could frisk me before touching me.My fiancée had a multi-tool (which had a knife) so he had that taken away before entering and he picked it up as we were leaving.Upon walking in, the vibe was chaotic in a good way. The bathroom was fine, no soap though, and low stall doors which had been mentioned before.Drinks were overpriced but what do you expect in downtown Minneapolis, if you want to save money stay home.I can say that if you want to go, go. There were many different bars with different vibes. Dont be dumb and vape in the bathrooms/give your underage friends drinks. Thatll get you kicked out. There is a coat check which I didnt know about, for four jackets to be checked it was $16.Go and have a good time! Be mindful and enjoy yourself.
Me and my friends came from out of town to celebrate my 21st birthday and 2 out of my 3 friends were 21. My other friend was 20 years old. My friend and I had to go to the bathroom and because we are girls, we went in the same stall, as we should. I had my drink and while going to the bathroom I finished my drink. We both went to the bathroom and when we got out of the bathroom, there was a female security guard and a male security guard right outside of the bathroom. The female security stops me and goes “you just gave her that drink” and I said “no I didn’t” I’m 21. She then says “yeah you did, I just saw you.” I was confused and I didn’t push it because we were already over it . She then put an x and a circle on both of our hands and escorted us out. It makes me wonder if she was looking at us while we were going to the bathroom. Completely ruined our night and she accused us of something we didn’t do at all. We weren’t even there for 45 minutes. I DONT RECOMMEND GOING TO THIS PLACE AT ALL. You are completely stalked by security without even knowing it. I also want to mention that security is strict inside the gay 90s but when we got “patted down,” the guy literally just dragged his hands along my side for not even 3 seconds. So many things have to be getting snuck in because they don’t pat down enough.
Horrible service. Used to come here before 21 and was fine. As soon as I turned 21 and went here I got kicked out bc my wrist band looked like it was given to me. Went to go buy shots but my bf had my id. Bartender said that my friend and I “ swapped “ IDS. Like how tf did we swapped ids when I’m on the picture and knew my address by heart? So he took my wrist band and told me to go find security to get a new band. Went to look for security and they kicked me out when all I needed was help
Horrible security! Very aggressive and completely rude to costumers who are visibly doing nothing wrong. Stalk woman into the bathrooms and male security banging down doors to womens restrooms stalls dragging them out as they are half naked going pee. Not at all what we were expecting for a fun night out. DO NOT GO HERE unless you want to be verbally and physically assaulted by security. Very very disappointed.
Fun atmosphere but no wonder they have bad ratings. Upstairs bartender charged for water when we asked for 2 cups of water and then gave us warm water bottles that we didnt want and wouldnt accept a return.
Walked in and a women security guard came up to me and kicked me out after not even having 1 drink. She said I was too intoxicated but I was only in there 10minutes. I asked her what I did and she was rude and didn’t answer me. also had to pay $10 to get in. Will not be coming back
Charging $3 for water is crazy. all the security guards are rude with inflated egos. Asked one his name, trying to be polite in line and he told me I wasn’t allowed in. Couldn’t give me a specific reason why. Went around to a different bouncer and got in. Not a good experience overall and will not be returning. Gives bad vibes.
Horrible experience. My girlfriend was followed around the club, then was manhandled by a security guard who made my shoulder bleed. They also took my sisters REAL PASSPORT card and ID and told her she’s “not a real citizen”. Note she is from India. THIS PLACE INTIMIDATES AND DISRESPECTS ITS CUSTOMERS then has no direct phone line so they can get away with it. Horrible club. Horrible experience. Do not go here.
They charged me $40 even though I told them it was just me and was told it was $20 for admission. I didnt realize until I came home and checked my bank account. I tried calling more than 5 times while they were open and no answer. They did pick up the first time and I told them I was falsely charged $40. There was dead silence and then a few seconds later, the call ended. Every time after that I tried calling and there was nothing. Just a really long obnoxious beep at the end. I used the contact form on their website and they still havent gotten back to me. I just want my $20 back.. :/
Too many straights and 18yr olds. You can’t even enjoy having fun knowing you are hanging around teens. On top of that, the place is dirty and drinks are overpriced. This place doesn’t even feel like a gay bar because of the demographic and security. The way they make you feel is definitely not friendly.
Okay the club itself is a super fun spot. but the security guards are psychotic… I was in the bathroom with my friends, i had my pants down PHYSICALLY going to the bathroom. The security guard screamed as loud as in he can “GET OUT OF THE BATHROOM BEFORE I BUST THE DOOR DOWN” …he was a man, i am a female. i had no time to wipe before he started counting down from 3? an hour later… i’m being followed by two tall male security guards. and they stop me and said “you gotta go boss man doesn’t want you here”… who the hell is boss man?! 😂 so pathetic. no refund or anything
The 90s is a fun spot for me and my girls to go but recently we had some MAJOR issues. Me and my friend were in a stall because we never go to the bathroom alone (as we should) when all of a sudden a MALE security guard came in the bathroom yelling “ladies get out the stall NOW or I’m coming in” while my friend was actively going to the bathroom…. She had to hurry up and pull up her pants without wiping so he wouldn’t come into the stall. We did end up leaving the stall but me and friends were getting followed the rest of the night by this same security guard before he finally approached us and said “boss man said you have to leave” and started shoving my friend out the door before we could even call a ride. The male security guards are extremely aggressive like for whatttt? It’s never that deep. Next time give a valid reason before kicking people out.
After hesitantly seeing other reviews same problem as mine the security guards were aggressive pushy and when I was too drunk they kicked me out without reasonThey said I think youve had enough for tonight Like who are you to tell me Ive had enough
I had a fun time with my friends but I didn’t buy anything. The bar person gave free water as long as I drank it there, and lots of the people dancing seemed very skilled. The music was nice, but I’m a bit concerned about their maintenance of the brick and other elements of the building. I would not have had a good time or felt as safe if I didn’t come with a few extroverted friends. I didn’t go to the bathroom there because I guessed they’d be bad. Based on the reviews here I think I was correct.
Not very gay not very 90s waited to long for a friend in the bathroom and got kicked out. If you plan to drink anything at all dont go its a sober straight club.
Loved it!! There is something for everyone!!Stayed at the AC Marriott across the street, great hotel! The Gay 90s peaked our curiosity so we had to check it out. So glad we ventured over!! Fun , Fun, Fun!! Its advertised as a gay bar but I think there were a total mix of all types of people, dont be shy. Check it out there are 5 or 6 differant areas and they are all cool!! If we are ever in the area again we will be back!!
Waited in line for 50 minutes just to have them turn me away because Im drunk when I showed them my pocket breathalyzer they left me alone. Then once I got to the front to be patted down they turned me away because the boss doesnt want you in so yeah. Heard great things about this place but dont go there if you want to hangout sober. Horribly disgusting and pathetically sad establishment. Never going again .
If you want to have fun , DO NOT GO HERE !!!!! I’m here from out of town and decided to visit the gay 90s bar just for entertainment and when I say this is the WORST establishment. Management is horrible. Bathrooms disgusting, MINORS DRINKING . . We got there kind of late around 1:45AM as soon as I walked in , there was fighting. I couldn’t make it past to the bar due to security scattered everywhere. When I got to the bar I was told there was no more liquor served after 2am . Why didn’t they tell me that before I paid my money at the door ??? I asked to speak with a manager and he had a VERY nasty attitude about the situation. Will not EVER be back or recommend this ghetto place.
I went to this place yesterday and everyone was super nice but I want to shoutout to the bartender guy who attempted to make me an Irish trash can despite not knowing what that was. You are a truly remarkable and considerate bartender and have my sincerest thanks. It was my first experience at a place like this and I’ll be more than happy to return again for a fun night!
Only giving a 4/5 because the drinks were super pricy. Kinda expected for a club. Absolutely loved the atmosphere! All the staff were super nice and chatty. We saw a drag show and the queens were AMAZING! We got to dance and talk with them and take photos. I definitely will come here again! Loved it!
I used to love to go to the 90s but it’s went downhill so bad these last few years. I went last night and the bartender called me a b and then got blood on my card, hands and my friends money after cutting his hand on a bottle. The bathrooms had no soap and when we told management and security they said “that’s just how he is” (referring to the bartender who was so incredibly rude) and “idk what you want me to do about it” about not having soap dispensers to clean the literal blood of my hands. The bathroom tiles were busted and dangerous as well. Never going back there and I hope the bartender gets an attitude check.
The drag queen shows are always the best part about this spot. The bartenders are pretty cool also. But the bouncers are low key rude. Idk who the DJ’s are or if they vary by floor but the music is so mid. The only good music this club has to offer comes from the Drag Queen shows. How am I, a Gen Z 20 something expected to get turnt to the same music every night when you guys only play music from 2010 - 2019. The music has GOT to do better.
Unlabeled entry fee you dont know about until you enter. $5 per person on a Sunday night. Might have missed a sign but unclear. Good drag show and good host but I am too dumb to know how to order drinks. I asked for a drink menu and they looked at me confused. I dont know how I was meant to know what drinks there were or the cost
This place has gone downhill for sure. DJs play old Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus music or music weve all heard a mission times in 2014 lmao
Security guard was creepy yall security guard kept going in the women’s bathroom, my friends and i went into one stall and he came in and shined a flashlight IN the stall while i was using the bathroom on the toilet. could see his head above the stall and felt very invaded and unsafe, he then pounded on the stall door then went back into the hallway and was screaming at all the girls in line.Threatening me while my pants were down as i was going to the bathroom. Makes me question if i’d ever want to come back to this establishment. gay 90s is supposed a progressive and safe space. Having a man yell at intoxicated women while vulnerable and constantly going in the women’s bathroom is not ok. either find a new guard or get a women security for the women’s restroom.
Super grimy and honestly dangerous, the floors of the bathroom have cracked tiles everywhere i fell and cut my hand open. The stall doors are barely up to my shoulders and people kept looking in the clearly occupied stalls. The stripper poles they have there are basically fence posts, they dont spin and are cut very sharp at the top of them, theyre hollow and very short. Twice as thick as safe dance poles should be and i saw people falling and hurting themselves all night. I felt extremely unsafe and watched the entire night, ive heard countless stories of people being pickpocketed, assaulted, roofied and lots of rumors going around about this place being a sex trafficking hub. I am so disappointed and sad that the 90s isnt all what people rave and rant about it being. it has so much potential to be a great club but the music is outdated and its just a whole mess. I really hope someone buys this place and turns it around. it could really be an awesome space but right now its a huge disappointment :(
My main reason for knocking off stars is the fact that, contrary to the name, this club is NOT a gay bar. It’s now a bar for straight people who view queer culture as a spectacle. Place is filled mostly with straight cis people, especially men who will not think twice about harassing you or touching you without consent. If you are queer, there are definitely other cool spaces and events around the city that are much safer and more inclusive!Luckily we had no issues with security like so many others have; overall had a fun night! Crowded and humid, but generally a good time. Love the retro room— place can be super fun if you enjoy loud, busy scenes.
The people, the atmosphere absolutely perfect. Everyone having fun, dancing, chilling. Dont know much about the Security problem tho. Hung out with my 2 friend to celebrate my Birthday. Wouldnt call it a Gay bar tbh. But fr its worth it to have fun in here.
Not really gay bar, more like a gay inclusive bar. Most of the clientele are straight, and are primarily friend groups and couples. For the most part the staff is friendly and welcoming, but I’ve also had some rude encounters with them as well. There was this one instance a friend of mine came for Kinky Friday and was dancing on one of the many poles on the dance floor. People thought she worked there and offered her money. Though she was continuously turning any money down the staff threatened to kick her out if she kept dancing. Keep in mind TONS of other people were dancing on the poles while this was happening. They just singled her out for whatever reason. On another note the performers I’ve seen are incredibly talented and almost made coming here worth it. However, I really don’t appreciate the attitude some of them have towards tipping. Not to say asking for tips is a bad thing, especially when you live off them. But implying that someone is a bad person if they tip less than $5 is really wack. The biggest gripe I have with the 90s is that I straight up don’t feel comfortable coming here as a gay women. Sexual harassment is a huge problem here. Every single time I’ve gone I’ve gotten groped and grinded on by creepy guys or have seen someone else getting stalked/harassed. These problems are especially prevalent when they have their kinky Fridays. The staff is very adamant about protecting the performers, but doesn’t extend that kindness to clubgoers at all. I understand that while unfair, these things happen at clubs a lot. But it’s the responsibility of the club to create an environment that discourages that behavior as well as punishes people who don’t abide by those standards. They aren’t even doing the bare minimum here. From what I’ve heard from regulars, my experience at the 90s is commonplace. It’s really disappointing because there really aren’t many safe spaces left for lesbian/wlw individuals in Minneapolis anymore :( . I‘ve given this place many chances, but I honestly don’t desire to come here anymore. It’s not worth my energy or yours either.
DO NOT GO HERE. Security harasses women and goes into the bathrooms and screams at them. My friend was thrown out and concussed by a MALE security guard. Dragged out from the bathroom stall, only because she was in the stall with her friend. She told them to wait because her friends pants were down and he opened the door and dragged her out. HORRIBLE PLACE DO NOT GO.
Crowd is probably 5% LGBTQ. It’s mostly 18-24 year olds (straight). Very hostile straight men. Also there’s no A/C except in the drag show room. Every room felt like a sauna and smelled like a men’s locker room. The different rooms have different vibes which is nice but that’s the only good thing about this place. Tip: leave the area before bar close. Something crazy always happens outside the area after 2AM on Fridays/Saturdays.
Wouldn’t recommend… . they have lost sight of what customer service looks like & it’s just another place that is divey with no actual standards …. one bouncer might get offended by you & take his/her personal emotions out on your evening & all of a sudden you’re pushed out like some sort of loser …. . There are better places to spend your evening. . . With that , I’ll note that the performances here ARE truly top notch .. & every single one of the professional performers could do better because they deserve to work in a space that not only treats them as the professionals that they are, but also treats the customers in the establishment that they work in, as valuable.
Its as stale as cigarette butts, flat beer, and pizza vomit.Brought to you by hyped up security, shady guests, overpriced. It not a good place.Needed renovation 33 years ago. What a sad, place.
This place use to be awesome, but now has sadly gone down hill. This place use to be a safe haven for the gays. Now it attracts the wrong crowd, criminals specifically targeting gays as an easy target. Unless you are constantly weary, do not dance in the rap/hip-hop room. I had been pickpocketed twice here. I also recommend leaving early if you do go. A lot of phone thefts and assaults have been happening outside the bar, where plenty of police stand vigil with their presence. Many on horseback to look like they are ready to take action, and a police station right around the corner. Sadly the police will see crime happen right in front of their eyes, like someone getting assaulted and bleeding out their face and do absolutely nothing, not even show concern or approach you to see what happened. Not a place to go to be victimized, but hey if you are a criminal, it is a safe haven to go and get away with your hate crimes specifically targeting the gays. Have fun!
Best place to be yourself or not deal with whomever. Worse place to use the bathroom. Their bathrooms are the worse in the world. I visited huts better. Drinks not as strong as they use to be. So expensive for no reason. The owners definitely living their lifestyle and said phuc our establishment 🤔😕 I honestly think a robot is running this establishment because all the Factual reviews and these Ninjas havent changed a thing. Upgrade the bathrooms!!!!! Thats the biggest start
Best to have cash when going here, the prices of cocktails are all different depending which bar you go to, during my experience at least during the weekend. I’ll try again and let ya know though soon.Thurs are usually a pretty nice night to go there dancing.
To be honest I have avoided Gay 90s bc of the negative reviews yet when I went there accidently after meeting up with some friends I was pleasantly surprised. The bodyguards werent aggressive but accommodating, the drinks were made quickly & the drag show was very fun. The only downside is that I lost my flip flop :p bc someone stepped on it so if someone finds it let me know. Jk :p but for realz it was surprisingly a really good overall experience.
I have been to this place a handful of times, the different themed music rooms never fail to disappoint me! loved the vibe. if youre not into a college dorm party vibe i would not recommend going, this is not a laid back bar whatsoever. this is a very chaotic place but its one of a kind!
Despite being in the Twin Cities for 13 years I only came here for the first time last weekend to celebrate a friends birthday. I was way more impressed than I thought Id be. The line to get in was a little annoying but once youre in its a blast. The place is divided into themed rooms including an arcade room, a pop room, a dance/EDM room, and the drag show upstairs, theres another room that I didnt get a chance to visit but I plan to see what the theme is next time I go back! There is a cover fee which is a little annoying, especially given the price of their drinks (a little high for the type of bar this feels like.) but I feel like the fun atmosphere makes up for it.
I had a great first experience at this club, up until the end. Just like the rest of the reviews, it was the security guard. Its really annoying too because when we first got there that SAME security guard was joking with us all and being a really fun guy. But we stayed until they closed at 3am and we didnt think itd be hard to get an Uber home. It was in the 30s outside and we were dressed for 50s or warmer. We were unsafely cold and it took us over 30 minutes to get a ride home. We were becoming desperate to get into a building and we begged the security guard to just let us stand near the entrance so wed be a fraction less cold. (mind you it wasnt winter, it was late enough in spring that it was abnormal to be this cold) We werent even treated like people, by the SAME guard. Ridiculous fakeass. I will never return to this place.
Fun place, good music and vibes. Many rooms so you can hang based on your preference. Cover is $5 on Thursdays and they had a great drag show (a Ru Paul contestant was even there and later on joined the regular dance floor for a little). However it is in a shady part of town, was a shooting there at 2:30AM last Friday or Saturday. I didn’t go that night but ppl I know who did found it very traumatizing.
Not really gay friendly, since theyre open to under 21 fridays and saturdays anyone and everyone comes regardless of if they are tolerant. when theyre noticeably busy they kick out people for little to no reason. I think i got roofied here last time i went and found out later all they did was kick my friend and i out
Women please be careful going here! My friend also lost her phone here, tried to get ahold of anyone through social media, email, and phone. No response. Also disgustingly dirty.
The bouncers are racist and homophobic. My two straight white friends got in no problem but me and my friend were the ones who got stopped and questioned. Disappointing cause this is supposed to be a safe place for the community. Thumbs down.
My friends and I come here every few months to celebrate a birthday or have a good time and watch the drag shows. For some background, we all are 21+ and from South Dakota and have South Dakota IDs. Last night, one of the bouncers did not let us in due the threat of “our IDs being fake.” They kicked us to the side of the line. At first the bouncer told us there was not a “glowy” marking on the back of the ID. Later in the night, the manager told us the lamination on the front was wrong. During this time, they were also not letting in other people of color with other “ID issues”. I understand needing to be careful, however turning away people with valid identification is ridiculous and uncalled for. They ended up letting us in after we showed the manager documents like bank statements, address verification, and even a birth certificate. How ridiculous is that to get into a club?! While I generally love this place, this is a horrifying experience. I have had things like this happen in the past with this place, and I thought it was finally time to tell people what they are signing up for.
Has the best music and the most lively crowd downtown
I LOVEDDDD that place it’s just they need to have carpet by the dancing poles. XDDDD either that or guard rails XDDD I can’t tell you how many times I fell cause of how slippery it was. (Also didn’t help that I was too close to the edge sometimes) I’m just glad I didn’t get kicked out cause someone thought I was drunk enough XDDD and I wasn’t even drunk
This place is a dump now. smoking area is closed simply because the security staff is too inept to keep people in check, bathrooms are either clogged or locks dont work, place is dirty, their social media is horribly ran as well. its really just not worth going when other clubs in the area are operated much more efficiently. The management needs to change, because obviously whoever is running this place right now doesnt know what theyre doing.
The bouncers kept tryin to take my shoes and wear them
This place is a must stop for GLBTQ community. The crowds get more fun later in the evening and the Saturday drag show is not to be missed. This place puts on a Vegas quality show!
DJ is so terrible bad music choice and cannot read the room, plays 80% Latin music sexy red and cardi b the other 20% is decent music buddy can’t read the room tho the entire club was standing still at so many points
I absolutely love the gay 90s! Especially on Saturdays when the crowds are bigger and they open up the dance floor downstairs.Theres a lot to do and Id be surprised if you get bored.WHY FOUR STARS?1) I will note that the music can be VERY loud so bring earplugs.2) Also the drinks are very expensive so Id suggest pregaming/buying only a drink or two here.3) Furthermore, its easier getting drinks at the upstairs bar than the downstairs. The downstairs floor tends to be more packed and theres only one or two tenders down there and itll take a while if you dont wave them down.4) leave before the close. This is just on the basis that a lot of people will stay until they close the doors and these tend to be very drunk persons. Its not the gay 90s fault, its people drinking irresponsibly. Its easier to get out if you leave before 2am as well.SUNDAYS:Sundays are a LOT more chill than Saturdays. They only have the upstairs open so you can watch the drag show and get drinks from the smaller bar. They do have dancing the last hour or so of the night but dont expect a big party like you see in the movies on Sundays.
I’m writing this solely because I’m concerned for the safety of women at this club, and I normally don’t write reviews even if I am upset about something. However, I feel I need to share this experience. The upstairs area is great, let me start off with that. That is the only reason I’m giving two stars, because if it wasn’t for that this would be a one star. I just think it’s unfortunate that that area is connected to the downstairs club area. If you’re interested in an LGBT experience, you’re not going to find that there. The club area is filled with straight men, especially older ones who will harass the freshly 18 year old girls. And, they will try to buy them drinks. Now, I know drinks are a legal issue when it comes to underage people drinking them, but the problem would be closer to being solved if the older men were kicked out instead of the young girls. Anyways, that’s not entirely what this story is about. I went with a friend, and he was drinking quite a bit. I was having waters. At one point during the night, he was getting himself a drink and getting me a water. He asked for me to take his drink to a table while he waited for my water. Now, I know that is technically not allowed. If I had simply been asked to leave for holding his drink I would not be writing this. Would it be a little annoying? Yes. However, it was late anyways so I didn’t care too much. Instead, a security guard came up behind me, PICKED ME UP, and carried me partially outside. I was terrified. There have been many instances of near kidnappings at this facility, including one that happened to my friend. After a moment when I realized what was happening I pushed away and just sped to the door. While doing that, I turned and saw the security guard shirt. He didn’t say a word to me, didnt ask if I had a coat (it was still somewhat chilly at that point), and never said what he was removing me for. I realize I shouldn’t have been holding my friends drink, but setting this behavior as standard for the security guards when there are issues with attempted kidnappings anyways is extremely dangerous. Do better for women’s sakes, and train your security guards better. They should at least explain who they are and why you’re getting removed before asking you to leave, which by the way, as I said, I was not asked to leave. I was partially carried out. You all should be ashamed for treating women this way.
My birthday and the bartender was really rude and had an attitude. Also Jack and coke is very expensive 22 for a small plastic cup. Id recommend somewhere else for your birthday or respect 🙌
Im really not sure why gay nineties is getting review bombed lately. I just went there Saturday night and had a blast! The bartenders were great. Karaoke was great. There were good vibes. I felt safe the whole time as well.
I’ve had some decent experiences here. idc if you believe this genuine post. but i’m the type to care ab customer service. but istg this joint could care less about what you think. especially about their customers . but i was shoo’d away for “attitude” by the ¡¡NEW!! security FEMALE guard had a power trip and i was kicked to the back of the line for no reason (aka she never gave me a actual answer- one/both times ) while my friend was let in- so whatever i go to the back of the line when i get up there she immediately says no with genuinely no reason - i ask totalk to the manager and he just tells me to leave. after watching what happened… i haven’t been there in the last year cause they truly ain’t worth going to…
If I could rate this place a 0, I would. I wish that I read the reviews about this place before I came here. The experience was terrible!!! It was the security guards made this experience the worst that I have ever seen. I went to many different clubs/bars all over the United States and this was the worst by far. First, the security guard people were really rude. They acted as if they dont want to be there and were visibly annoyed by drunk people even though they work in a bar. Although they were people of color, they were still racist to brown/Native people. Lateral violence is a thing and it was very present last night !! Also, people of color being racist to other people of color is a thing too. They all acted shocked when I said that they were being racist saying, Im black, so I cant be racist, which in fact they can be. We had this whole argument/ scene over them not wanting to give me back my taser. I asked one security guard where to get it and he was rude for no reason. He gave me attitude. I kept on asking where it was and then we got ganged up on by 5 security guards. Keep in mind that we are small women, and they were have guys twice our size bullying us over my taser!! We are also Alaskan Native, and one of the security guards yelled at us to go back to Alaska. That was racist and rude af. All I have to say about this place is to do not go there. This was my first experience at a club in Minneapolis and it was the worst. Quite frankly, I do not want to go to any club again because my first experience at this establishment was the worst experience of my life. They are lucky that we did not get any of this on camera, otherwise I would have sued for assault and trespass to chattels.Do better Gay 90s!! Hire security guards who are going to keep the people safe and not be visibly annoyed by drunk people at a club. Their attitudes and rude behavior is not worth your reputation. My reviews and the prior ones can speak to your employees behavior!! Sincerely, an Alaskan Native girl who just wanted her taser.
Happy he stopped serving me when I wasn’t intoxicated?!!!1:08 am and im ok to put this message on google 🙄 over priced drinks, same type of music !!!! Just aburribke experience when I tipped everyone who’s served me 2$10 or more!!! Idk if it’s racist profiled or idk but it wasn’t good!!!! Please be aware of the type of service your gonna get light skinned or whoever!!!!! And the prices for drinks are 3x more than anyOther plac that’s better, notIncluding the racism just bad!!!!
CHEAP ENTRANCE FEE. LOVED THE AWESOME LIGHTS AND MUSIC... DEFINITELY WILL BE RETURNING.
They don’t let you drink tap water??? I truly thought it was a prank after paying for a COVER. But no. If you want to KEEP YOUR HUMAN BODY ALIVE you have to PAY. I will NEVER return. Save your money. Go to the basement bar.
If you are gay, avoid this bar at all costs. This is l NOT a gay bar. It is a straight bar disguised as a gay bar in order to get queer dollars. The security will straight up steal from you, and when you try to leave and regain the items that were stolen, it will lead you down a rabbit hole to no end. This bar is the absolute worst place to go to in the entire MSP area. Avoid at all costs. I cannot express how misleading the name of this bar is. And if you’re anything like me, you would think, “Oh, gay is in the name! It must be a fun gay bar!” WRONG. I tried to give it a chance. Never again
Super fun place, the drinks are just so expensive 😩💔
Went there last night with two friends 21+ and three of us under 21. Accused us of drinking our friends drinks and kicked us out when we told them to check the cameras and prove it or to breathalyze us. They refused and told us to leave. Will not be going back and very irritated we were only there for about 20 minutes and wasted our money. Could tell it was a new security guy too. Wish i knew his name so I could call and complain to the business.
I was visiting from Colorado and met the sweetest person there. I didn’t get their number and I didn’t give them mine(because I honestly wasn’t thinking) , but if they happen to see this review, know I hope our paths cross again one day😊Also, karaoke on Saturday night was fun, and Ron was a nice bartender. Only bartender to make me a drink at sea level that actually got me drunk. Hats off to Ron for that!
Please let me know if you have seen my driver’s license! I lost it yesterday.
I feel like going to target on a random Tuesday in November is gayer.
A fight had broken out and everyone was asked to leave. This then lead to some security guards lying about being able to get our coats from Coat Check. My friend had another security guard grab him by the neck as people were asked to leave EVEN though we were well on our way out. The marks are faint, but they are there. Ive enjoyed Gay 90s as an establishment and it has its ups and downs, but this night is definitely a turning point in my willingness to come again.
Fun enough spot if you don’t have to interact with any of the door staff or security. Downright rude staff that makes you feel guilty for even being there. The manager, Jacob, leaves a lot to be desired.
Good luck getting ahold of anyone at this place. Ive called several times throughout this whole weekend and NOBODY answers nor gets back to you. Ive even texted the main Instagram of this place and still nothing. I lost something very important and there is no way of even finding out if its there or not. Ive gone to this club many of times and enjoy going, but what is the point of putting a phone number out and not even answering it.
This place is definitely not what it used to be, but thats not always a bad thing. I wouldnt really consider this place to be a gay club anymore... but I would consider it to be a multifacted venue that provides a pretty unforgettable experience so long as you go at the right time and with the right people. They have five or so different bars each in its own specialized dance room that has different music and a different vibe and spread out on two floors. The place is pretty massive. They do weekly/monthly events in different rooms so be mindful of what is happening before you go if you can. Like I said, its definitely not what it used to be, but it can still be a really good time if you go with a plan. It can be a little chaotic if you just swing by without knowing whats happening.
Having a grown man security guard for the women’s bathroom is really weird. also when he looks into the stall when my pants are at my ankles is beyond violating. very very awful experience
Wow. So I lost my car keys here (also my apartment keys) and so I asked a security guard and they said go to lost and found so I did and asked and they thought it was funny. They smiled and said “we’re closed” I have a feeling they were turned in but they are a bunch of haters. They probably saw the mustang logo and said “f this guy”
Dont drink the beer. You will get sick. Bartender served me two beers which expired 4 years ago. I drank half of one and the bartender yelled at me when I brought them back. Got sick in parking lot after sober. 90s is a tough one these days. Sad since the made improvements. Not a safe place to. Lots of pick pockets
$3 for water. Irresponsible and also ridiculous considering theres always cover. Fun but probably wont ever be going back :/
Last 3/4 times someone in our group has been kicked out. not worth the cover charge if theyre gonna kick u out for drinking legally. bouncers will literally grope u to check if u have anything. screw this place
Parker at the bar is literally the best! Gave me the best service out of anybody at the multiple bars! I LOVE YOU PARKER. Only coming back here for you
Have not been here in 20 yrs or more. Myself and my friends used to have the time of our lives at the 90s.Recently went back for nostalgia purpose. I had read so many negative reviews, and couldnt believe such an iconic place could be so terrible.Well, it was! This is not a gay bar......Im not sure what it is now. Ive been to gay establishments all over the world and there has always been one factor in common....SAFETY!My friends and I left within an hour of arriving because it was clear we were not appreciated there. This is really to bad. Yes we are older now, however we now have the money that most places want to attract.I will never go back, nor will I ever recomend anyone go there. LGBT community please dont go here, go to a place where you are safe!
This place is great! So many different rooms on different levels that all have different themes, music, and entertainment. There is a cover charge of $5, unless you get there early enough! On the first Friday of each month, theres a special event called Kinky Friday. Its pretty crazy and I highly recommend checking it out at least once! The drink prices are pretty reasonable for downtown, and if you are a sober cab, your non-alcoholic drinks are free! The clientele is diverse and usually very fun!
Dont get me wrong, I love diversity and I vibe with everybody, but there is something seriously wrong with the culture here now the last 2 weekend nights Ive been here. They are letting literal gangs come in here and congregate on the dance floor (not dancing or vibing with anybody). Please work on kicking out these disruptive groups that dont want to come out to have fun, but are just here to... Be there and cause trouble.
It was VERY busy this weekend so I understand they are swamped. That being said, if youre a lesbian whos not hyper feminine, good luck getting served by men. The one lady bartender was slinging drinks to everyone she could in a timely manner. The karaoke room bartenders on the other hand had only 1/4 of the people and served the same people and ignored a lot of people. These same bartenders refused to serve my sister A WATER. I was even snapped at when just leaning to place an order.I work in the service industry so I dont want this to sound overly negative, I just hadnt had an experience like this before. Gotta try again when its not pride maybe.
Great place! But some of the staffs are rude. My friend and i were watching the drag show and my friend is sensitive to strobe lights and had developed a huge migraren and we left the show and went to a different room and she wanted to get some water and she had been waiting for the bartender to notice her and when she did and asked her for water, she laughed and rolled her eyes and ignored her. She didn’t get her water. We went downstairs and went to the game room and she did get water. Bartenders are not to ignore requests like that, especially if they do not feel well and just want water. The place is great overall, but some of the bar staff definitely need training
Some people are just straight up rude. If you are not here to have a good time and you are out grumpy. Why did you even go out in the first place? Stay home! Dont ruin the fun for other people just because you are a crabby human being.
Not what it used to be.The place has so much potential! There are several segmented bars within the venue that were once quite fun. Over the years they’ve tried minor renovations but nothing that was an actual investment.I had a knife pulled on me here one night, so that is a sign that it isn’t the safest place. I was sober and this individual fell onto me & my friends, then pulled out a knife.Thankfully the security tackled him and 86’d him after I notified them of what happened.Unfortunately much like the other venues on the block owned by the same people it went from being fun/sleazy to an embarrassment. Most of the drag performers left and went to Lush (Northeast MPLS) because they weren’t happy with the management. Those performers had been doing shows for idk, 15+ years?A sad, dark, dumpy bar that used to be so much fun.
I completely understand that young people need a place to hang out and meet, but this club has really been taken over by 18-20 year olds. We went to a show, and in a room of hundreds of people, less than half were of legal drinking age (and it was noticable). I really dont mean to sound rude but it ruins the vibe when a bunch of 18 year olds are running around, having their first club experience, acting a fool. I agree with some other comments that this club has become really mainstream for straight people - I get they need a place too, but this is supposed to be a space for LGBT+ people. Just not the vibe, Ill go to support the preformers but Im not trying to spend an evening at the 90s anymore.
My favorite part about this bar is you can chill and sit down/ watch a drag show upstairs, or go downstairs and party. So many unique little bars all in one building. Havent seen that elsewhere. Pretty cool. 11 pm- 1 am is the time to go.
The drag shows are lit and the drinks are worth the price BUT the music annoys me ! They are still playing “crank that Soulja boy” 🙄🙄they never play current hip hop or r&b and I don’t understand why! Also I wish they had someone that would clean the bathrooms every 2 hours or so and have soap etc I have to hold it if I need to use the bathroom. And the place needs a renovation the carpet has been there forever and the smell is not good
Watch out, security guards are undertrained, violent, unattractive and incompetent brutes. They will violate you! Thier drinks are cheap, because they give you no name rail liquor and expired beer. If you want cheap thrills goto a better area of town. Ghetto.
Ive had issues with the bouncers at this place on more than one occasion, something that has never been an issue for me anywhere else as I am a very polite person! The crowd can also get a bit scary, my friend got punched in the face for no reason while we were on the dance floor! I wont be returning.
The club was pretty packed down stairs but in other rooms it felt almost empty, as if no one was there. The bars are amazing, along with lighting, and music. You definitely do not have to be gay, bisexual or anything like that. Yes it maybe easier to talk to people but you could be straight and still go there and dance. No one asks and the atmosphere is totally non judgemental. At least make it an option next time you go?
Leave before it closes, they keep the music going until 2:30 but then all staff gets super rude telling you to leave... The only restroom available at the end was flooded!!
We paid so much money to get in, then by accident we walked into the men’s restroom instead of the women’s because we really had to pee but we were genuinely confused and the security guard burst in and kicked us out the club….. I understand we made a mistake but they did not have to do all that and kick us out we could’ve just been told to leave the men’s restroom.
Some security girl screamed at us for using the bathroom then yelled at us again for waiting to get a Lyft…… everyone else was nice but she ruined the entire club for me and all my friends. We don’t even want to come back because of her. Hire better security who won’t scream at people for peeing. Smh. My arm will be bruised from how hard she grabbed me.
The security here harasses women and none of the management acknowledges any concerns!! Male security guards should not be entering women’s bathroom stalls that are occupied! Unacceptable. Do not come here!!!
I love going here but last night I got kicked out in a really rude way. My friend has a boot on his leg. we were walking down the stairs and I carried his drink to help him. I gave it back and a Security guy came up asking if I had a bracelet. I didn’t and I showed him. He went off on us. I was trying to explain to him that my friend was in a boot and I was trying to show him my bracelet that said I have diabetes. I can’t drink Alcohol! He just made us leave. He didn’t even see me “drink” it. It was going to be a nice night but totally got ruined. We were there for 15 min max.
Its a nice club with a lot of different rooms to go into and the drag queens are awesome! However, its not very lgbt. My girlfriend and I have gone there a couples times to take a break from the straight men at other clubs, but unfortunately they were all over that place. Nice club, but not very gay!
I am so disappointed in the staff at this bar, the Asian bartender guy ignored me every time I tried to get a drink. People would walk up to the bar and he would server the person next to me and just ignored me, which was done a couple of times. Also, the girl at the coat check was super rude to my bf when we claimed our jackets, he was being polite and asked her how she was doing and she just started out with a rude comment. This was my second time here and probably my last time.We should not be treating each other like this, we should be trying to become and stay united instead of being rude to each other because of whatever differences we have. I hope the atmosphere here change so people can actually co.e out and get a good experience here.
It was fun and I enjoyed the drag show, but its GHETTO! Security actually pats you down before youre even allowed in the door. Ive been to plenty of gay bars in Chicago and San Francisco and Ive never been patted down.
They kicked us out because they accused my cousin of having a fake ID and then even threatened to take it. They said we had to pick it up from the police the next day but we literally had to go back to our home town. One other person in security even said it was real but didn’t take it because the first guy said it was “ off-centered “ .
Security is verbally and physically abusive. NOT appropriate to have male security guards in female bathrooms. this is not a safe environment.
I went here with a large group of friends for a going away party for my boss/friend, as he chose the club. People had told me how fun this place used to be, and that its become really seedy and shady now. I actually liked it for a fun night out. I didnt have any issues with the bouncers at the front door; they were very nice. Bartender was not that friendly but he was responsible and knew when to cut people off. Everyone was really lively and the show with the impersonators was awesome. I liked that they played a decent variety of music. It was also really cool that there are multiple bars there and all of them are unique.I would have given it a 4/5 because its a fun place to go, but I had a bad experience with the woman taking our cover charge before going in. I read online that the cover charge was $5, but then our friend kept saying she heard it was $10 each, so when it was our turn to pay I started to hand her $20 to cover my friend and I and she said Youre both 21 so I dont need this and handed me 5 back. Anyone who is over 21 should only be paying $5, so she should have given me $10 back. I highly doubt it was an accident and she likely knew we were confused and she could get away with it, but I let it go because I wanted to have a good time with my friends. Then shortly after getting inside, the bartender asked me where my 21+ wristband was and I hadnt been given one and didnt even realize it (she had only given my friend one), so I had to go back down to the main entrance to get my wristband. I approached the same woman (relatively skinny with very red hair) and said If you remember me, I came through with my friend about ten minutes ago and you took my payment, which by the way you overcharged me for the cover fee, but you never gave me a wristband... and she didnt even respond to my being overcharged and said Youll have to go back out there and show the bouncers your ID again and I held it out and said I have it right here, and you just saw me come in... and she very rudely said I dont check IDs, you have to go outside. It was clear she was more worried about exercising her power rather than keeping a customer happy.First of all, its really not hard to double check an ID. Second, it was her mistake, not the bouncers or mine that she didnt give me a wristband (and this after screwing us over on the cover charge). Honestly, I realize you dont expect to meet super friendly people working at a downtown club, but this girl was AWFUL. She really tainted my view of the club itself. How this girl got a job there (or anywhere for that matter) is beyond me.Im not sure Id ever go back to Gay 90s unless my friends wanted me to, and I might have felt differently if it hadnt been for that girl.
I’ve never been to a more welcoming place. Nor have I had more friends in my life then I have since I walked through the doors of this beautiful place. Everyone is so welcoming and even help me and inspired me to become a Bio Queen! I look up to each and ever one of these amazing ladies that steps on stage night after night. Never have I seen one queen be nasty nor have I felt uncomfortable by any of them. If you wanna come to a real party you’ll wanna be at the fabulous Gay 90’s! Thank you for opening this place up for all of us that don’t feel welcomesd anywhere else.
3 dance floors, 6 bars and drag, a game room and karaoke what does the 90s not have? The tenders are usually high spirited and a swell gals but the drinks are overpriced on top of the $5 to $10 cover charge, which is the reason for 3 stars. The bathrooms need a serious cleaning but the atmosphere is relaxed, open and accepting of all walks of life. Its fun to go and watch the shows and then dance your butt off in 5 inch heels. Usually the kitchen closes at 9 but it seem that they have been having problems staffing which leads to long wait times and wilting lettuce. The wiener hole is usually open late, til around 1am, at least 1 night a week but they wont open unless the club is busy and the partys pumping. The bottle service is on par with most other establishments and thier special events are one of a kind.
Im from Chicago where we have an abundance of gay bars and drag shows /clubs. Out of all the ones Ive been to here, nothing compares to the Gay 90s! The atmosphere, the people, the Queens, the service...this place tops it all!! What a great place to hang!! Next time Im in town Ill be back for sure!!
First drag show, it was super fun! They put on a great show and the crowd was into it as well! Service was fine, no issues there. Highly recommended party stop for a night out!
I can only write about the bar on the first floor. It used to be dark, dirty and have thefunkiest (not funky in a good way) restrooms. Well it is no longer dirty. The carpets and the lights have been cleaned and the walls and ceiling repaired and repainted and the restrooms are state of the art, both aesthetically and functionally. The entrance door is still neglected and dirty and the flower boxes in winter are full of , ugly, Hernadoz Hide-a-Way- on-skid-row ugly. I dont get that because theyve obviously spent many thousands upgrading the first floor. Its still dark but if you want to read a book you can go across the street to the Public Library.Ive gotten really good service. I ask for the good stuff but the price is always right.I go there at least once a week and have had plenty of chances to observe the service.
Friendly place but not what it used to be. I went with a group of friends. Saw a great drag show! But the drinks were expensive, the average age seemed about 19 and I felt like a minority as a gay man. All in all I probably wont return. Ill keep the memory alive and let the straight highschoolers have their fun.
Witnessed a girl get drugged and almost assaulted. When I tried to tell security what happened they said “I don’t care, what do you want me to do about it?”Maybe your job??She ended up being taken in an ambulance and I was KICKED OUT for trying to report it.Absolutely disgusting behavior from a gay bar during pride weekend. YOU ARE NOT SAFE HERE!
It was my first time ever at a drag show/club experience. La Femme was amazing & the main host was very including & soooo beautiful & hilarious. The drag queens were working it out there!! Latin night was super fun as well since I am Hispanic. The other dance floor was very packed & there was a couple of weird men who wouldn’t stop eyeing my friends, but overall it was a very turnt & welcoming experience. Definitely coming back!
I’ve been coming to the 90’s since my 21st birthday and this place never gets old. Great people, awesome drinks and great music to dance to. The drag show is always a favorite of mine. Thank you for being part of my life.
I checked out this place for the second and last time not long ago. I should have listened to my friends when they said to stay away from there because it wasnt what it used to be. I dont know what it used to be. All I can see is what it is. There were signs that said this is a safe space for everyone. It didnt feel like a safe space at all. I was there for a half hour before I said no more. The inside is filthy from the carpets to the tables to the bars and everything else. I have no idea how this type of filth can bring in so many people. Worse, I saw a couple cockroaches crawling behind the bar and where the bartenders make their drinks. I saw several dirty glasses. I didnt bother buying a drink, in fear that Ill get sick. Im happy I didnt because I saw another customer get served one of those dirty drinks. Employees were beyond rude. I felt like I was in the worst neighborhoods of New Orleans again. They didnt care about anyone but themselves. I was scared to be around them.I saved this paragraph for the worst of them. That would be the drag queen who goes by Anita Riviera. I saw him mouth off people for no reason. He was using racial slurs against people of color. Being Im biracial, I was deeply disturbed by the racism that came from him. I also overheard him poke fun at one of my friends for being in the autism spectrum. He cant help his disability! This drag queen needs to either shape up his act or run out the door.
One amazing experience! The drag show was phenomenal! Every detail was accounted for and my friends that were visiting the establishment for their anniversary enjoyed themselves immensely.Thank you to everyone for putting in all the effort.
Wow, this is such a change from my last review! I went back there earlier this month, and am sorry to say that things have changed for the worst since I was last there two years ago. Thuggish management, incompetent security guards, and a clear lack of communication and respect for the customer was rampant, and they refused to reimburse me for transit costs after an error made in City Pages stated that an event was taking place one night, and the 90s decided to cancel it at the last possible second WITHOUT placing any signs outside the building or posting something on their website about it!This place used to be pretty incredible, but now its not even worth a passing glance for the GLBT community and heteros alike. I am not going back there unless I am not the one paying for the overpriced drinks and admission costs! Go to the 19 Bar or the Saloon if youre looking for a bar that features great drinks at great prices, and RESPECTS their customers!!
10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND. Ive been here multiple times and this place has gotten significantly worse, with the atmosphere becoming more hostile each time. My phone was pulled out of my front pocket last night and was stolen. I called today asking for a manager, was told there was one there but he wasnt going to take my call. I was given to the head of security, who was INSANELY mean and rude, and told me the manager wasnt there and that he couldnt give me his schedule, and that they refuse to hand over security footage for my police report. The night I was there, the entire security staff was beyond rude, and refused to help with my situation when I was clearly in distress. I know multiple people who have had their phones/wallets/credit cards stolen from this place and have had the same experience.
I had a great time until I met the bartender in the room with the poles. He thew ice at my friend after he waved to get his attention. He served 5 women that walked up to the bar *after* we walked up, attempting to flirt. One of the dancers confirmed that he has been problematic with female clientele. Gay 90s is the most homophobic gay bar I have ever been to.
Friday night, I had the time of my life at the Lafemme Drag Show! And yes, I won the twerk contest on stage that night! Met some awesome people, danced all night long, and never felt so good to be in a place where I could be me! I will return again, and again, and again!!
I used to love this club, but the security they have now is a joke. They allow there Male security guards to put there hands on woman. Idgaf if ur straight or not that is never okay. A man twice my size got away with not only hitting one but two woman last Saturday night. And I think it funny that they talk to me like I have no idea what happend when I was completely sober. Its to bad they have definitely lost my business and all those that I talk to.
Pretty fun club, spent new years eve here, dont remember a lot of the evening as a friend kept pushing drinks on me, but the one thing I do recall, was that when the bartender at the end of the evening watched one of us spill the shot at the bar, he charged for it, and wasnt particularly pleasant about it either. Its a bar, people are bound to get drunk, and accidentally spill, especially when its swamped, dont get butt hurt that I spilled a shot on your bar.
I visited for the first time tonight. Someone walked into a door and I followed. I am still not sure at this point whether it was the entrance or the exit. All I know is that I asked a security guard and he just put his hands on me. I should have pressed charges. I will never try to enter this establishment ever again. I do not recommend. I will never visit again.
A male bartender tonight guided me and my friend to an unmarked males bathroom assuming that I was a transgender female. I am a cisgender disabled female. After getting on the toilet, security ordered us to leave before I could even pull my pants up. With my underwear still not pulled up, the manager assumed I was drinking (not asking me or giving me any test) and talked to my friend like I wasn’t even there. End of story. Discrimination still exists even in venues that are supposed to be all inclusive. It’s wrong and there’s nothing I can even do about it.
My favorite bar in Minneapolis, 2 story nightclub that meets everyones style. From arcade room, drag shows, dancers, and a mix of all kinds of music everyone will find a room to their liking. On busy nights the security will let you in on the left of outside patio if your 21+ and paying cash, everyone else through main door. Its an 18+ club so expect a younger crowd. Also serve food in room where you coat check, you could buy a fishbowl of liquor at the same counter if you want an adult slushie. Check their website for events and ask the bartender for the drink special, unless you like paying $12 drinks
The staff is overly disrespectful and security has no respected for paying customers who actually that want to come to club. Management has no type of respect towards their worker physically and mentally.
Men dressed as women singing Top 40 hits and Diana Ross songs? Sign me up.With all the gay bar choices out there from the Saloon, Gladiators, Blot, 19 Bar, and more, it was hard to determine which to tackle first... but not that hard. Ive heard good things about Gay 90s drag show, so that was that. And good it was. There were a variety of drag queens to appeal to various tastes. Some were medicore at best (in looks and performance) but a few were very, very talented and incredibly entertaining. The MC rocked the house and joked with the crowd. I will admit, like the review before me, there were quite a crowd of heterosexuals around: when the MC asked for the L&G to raise their hands, very few did, and half of them were in our group! However, thats not to say there werent any in the the house... they were all out tearing up the dance floor! If the Drag shows not your thing, Im sure one of the 6 bars and 3 dance rooms will have you partying hard in no time. Upstairs is the recently remodeled Retro Room with plush carpeting and hard wood floor, 7 poles in the back and two on the bar for all your twirling needs, and flat-screen panels around the room showcasing the latest and greatest music videos.Downstairs, theres a room for hip hop music and another for pop. Theres a special bar, Mens Room, for men only (surprise) past the mens restrooms. My group of gay and straight men entertained themselves with shots and graphics videos while us ladies were left to our imaginations.Service was pretty good - didnt have to wait too long for drinks. At one point, my friend and I got a drink that turned out pretty terrible, but the bartender quickly replaced it with something very delicious. For a straight girl, I have got to say, there were some great eye candy in the house. I somehow also talked two of the male dancers there into showing me a few moves on the pole, which was AWESOME! It is NOT easy doing tricks on the pole and Ive got the bruises this morning to prove it. Lots of upper arm, core, and leg strength and control to pull of the slick moves. Major props to all the dancers.
The security guard harassed us from The beginning to the end and made us feel so uncomfortable we had to leave. At a bar/club where everyone is excepted to feel so subejected to targetting for no reason except being there, is appalling and ruined our night celebrating our grandmas birthday ; after celebrating her bday there for so many years. Just utterly disappointed in the security. We are people of color trying to enjoy our city, I hope this is not the reason we experienced such bad service.
I was at this facility on 04-19-19. I used their coat check service. I had a tag with my number on it and the clerk gave my coat to someone else who didnt have a tag. I was told the people who took my coat were my friends. The only people I was with also had their jackets stolen. I couldve stood at coat check and picked any coat I wanted there as you can see all coats. I was told if I can describe a coat I would be given that coat. What a horrible service this establishment provides. They do not take any responsibility for their actions. I will never go back again!!!!
I lost my phone there last night and came in today to find it. Unfortunately it hadn’t been turned in. So a very kind drag queen walked me around and helped me look for it. When security got there they even helped me look. We did find it but I just really appreciated how kind the staff is there. They are so amazing. I believe the drag queen that helped me was Urszula DelMar. They were so sweet!
Just take 2 seconds to read the reviews of this place and you’ll see it’s not a safe place for women or LGBTQ people. abusive security and TRASHY STAFF.
I love the 90s! Fun & does not judge your style. You can wear a sweater and they will let you in. 3 diffrent sections of entertainment. My favorite is the upstairs where they perform for you. And also the section with the poles. I went one time in the summer around my birthday and they had a foam event going on.
I came all the way from the Duluth area for my bachelorette party wanting to specifically come to this club I have heard about for several years. We were walking from the Pour House when my friends feet hurt from wearing heels so I switched her (I was wearing flats). As I walked up to get in line I tripped on a crack on the sidewalk and caught my balance. Please note I never wear heels. Half of my friends already got past the bouncer when she asked if we were with them. I say yes. And, she proceeds to tell me the rest of us cant go in. I asked are you at capacity? She tells me I was too drunk because I tripped. Well jokes on you guys my friends that did get in told me there were people way more drunk and one even throwing up! I cant believe the poor judgement that bouncer had. I wont ever come to this establishment to be treated that way. I am a classy lady with self respect that would go home if I was too drunk. I am 25, far too old to be going to a club too drunk. None of my 10 friends that were with me will return. Some of them being residents of the area and we plan on spreading the word.
Turned away because my Spanish ID card wasn’t good enough. I don’t have a US ID. Picture of my passport wasn’t good enough. Absolutely lame. PS I am 41 years old not a teenager.
I only wish I could give this place a lower review. Unfortunately I saw one of my friends violently assaulted and robbed(his phone) by one of the security guards management and police have done nothing so far. I only reccomend going here if you enjoy being beat up and robbed for no reason.
The drag shows at the Gay 90s are great and guarantee an amusing time for everyone. However, the staff is unfriendly, especially the security guards in particular who are often hostile towards guests. I would understand them being authoritative towards those who are behaving inappropriately at their establishment but all you have to do is sneeze in a way they dont like and theyll start conflict with you. For a gay bar with friendlier service, Id recommend The Saloon, which has more gay clientele anyway.
Kpop night is a scam. They will play 3 kpop songs and then play 5 sad pink/Katy Perry songs. My friends and I had to request songs to the dj because he didn’t know any and then tell us that he didn’t have those songs. Why have this event if your not going to stick with it?
The WORST staff I’ve dealt with. Was taking a video of my friend and a staff member thought she was in the video and FREAKED. i said “no need to flip out, you’re not in it”, she comes out of the ticket booth like she’s about to fight me and threatening to kick me out. I just walked away. Bouncers very rude at the end of the night. This place has gone down hill
This isnt a gay bar anymore. I got punched for having my tape showing in the bathroom and the bartender didnt care when I told him. This isnt a safe place for trans people.
Riley was fantastic. She is a security guard and made sure I didn’t step on glass because i was barefoot . She is awesome thank you gay 90 s!!!
Worst security I’ve ever dealt with!!! Rude, disrespectful, I’ve been to bars and clubs all over the 50 states, this is by far the worst in my experience
The bartender (he must be one of the main ones) because hes always there... anyway, he slid me my beer so fast causing it to spill, and then wouldnt replace it and wouldnt take it off of my tab. that was my first beer of the night and he was just down right rude. gave me a whole new train on of thought. ill never go back there unless hes gone
The female bouncer here grabbed me by the jacket and yanked me towards her and started to grope me. Absolutely disgusting and violating. Just because we’re both women, it doesn’t make it okay.
The smell is STRONG. A cross between sewage and bleach. I would NEVER eat the food there. I tried a taco on Taco Tuesday, and had one bite and tossed it. Most of the bartenders are biiiiatchy and drunk on duty. If you like a drag show however, this is the place.
The 90’s is a really fun place! Idk about other people but I’ve made so many friends & have had so much fun. The only con I have is the music😭 the Dj plays the same songs every single time I’ve gone.
I went here for brunch once with my mom. The food was average, but after a while, I began to feel really uncomfortable, like some guy might start hitting on me.I dont have anything against gay people, gay bars just arent my thing.
The 90s is certainly a Minneapolis gay bar institution. However, over the past decade, the crowd has shifted to heterosexual customers outnumbering the homosexual crowd. Famous for their 18+ nights (W/Th/F/Su) and drag shows, this venue has multiple rooms on multiple levels that cater to everyone: Karaoke, dancing, and Go-Go dancers on weekends. Expect to pay $5-$10 cover and about $5 for a rail drink most nights.
I trust the Local Guides reviews when I travel. Guides grades this place poorly.I could not find and replies from the bar to the poor reviews. I guess that they just dont care.Well, I have read enough recent reviews to avoid the place for my health and safety.
I only give this a 1-star rating because the bouncers or people checking your IDs do not have, in any way, shape, or form, the correct knowledge to know if an ID is fake or genuine. The drag show and overall theme of the place gave a good vibe, but the fact that they refused to acknowledge that my GENUINE Indiana license was fake with no way of checking, absolutely destroyed the mood of the place. Why not invest in an ID scanner/checker? It is also an 18+ club and the fact that they cannot distinguish that I am above 18+ is absolutely stupid. I recommend that if you have flawless looking skin, a baby face, and an ID other than a Minnesota license, you take your business elsewhere because the bouncers wont be able to recognize if your ID is genuine or not and will just be given we wont accept it. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO THAT DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT MY ID WAS GENUINE. One of the bouncers said yeah its real and they decided to let me in, I just lost interest in the place and would not be returning at all.
Worst experience ever, this was a few Halloweens ago, friend was dressed as Edward scissor hands, had hard time getting his id out of his pocket under his outfit, plus the fake scissor hand gloves didnt help, bouncer denied him entry for being too intoxicated, stole my friends scissor gloves, refused to give them back and then assaulted my friend I was with by grabbing him and tossing him into the street, friend still has scars all over from the incident. Only reason this is so late is because I NEVER write reviews, thinking of coming back to Minneapolis for Halloween and got upset about this again. I see this is just something they do there, plenty of other places to go in Minneapolis, dont wast your time and patronize this place, you may get assaulted for looking intoxicated, Just so this place knows, YOU DO SERVE ALCOHOL.
Ive not been there yet, my good fruit. But I shall endeavor to wax - up the old handlebar, put on a clean pair of spats and don my best bowler. Then I shall sally forth and infiltrate their place of purveyance. Suppose I could encounter a young sporting chappie to accompany me to the bath house?
Go here if you like your phone stolen and then the bouncers call you racist for showing them who stole your phone. utterly disgusted. legal action being taken on Monday as its clear as ever they are more than likely in on it.
The Gay 90s is seriously the only bar I will go to in Minneapolis. I love their sexy male bartender. He is so adorable and is the main reason I go to that bar. Very good food also. And they were very pleasant the time I was there.
The bouncer was a female who wouldn’t let my girlfriend in but let me and one of our other friends in. When we asked what her reasoning was, she said she had one but wasn’t going to tell us. Said there wasn’t anything wrong with her ID just said she couldn’t come in because she didn’t want her there.
$15 for a “shot” there definition of a shot is literally 5,6 drops of liquor and with COVID still out they should be using plastic shot cups not glass cups and ripping people off spent $30 for 2 shots and didn’t even get tipsy overall nice & energetic club
This establishment allows bartenders to racially harass patrons who speak languages other than English. Don’t patronize this mediocre establishment unless you want ice thrown at you by intoxicated employees and to be gas lit by the bartender for calling out bigoted behavior. Disgusting.
Smells terrible and very impolite staff. Seems to be a common theme. After charging way too much money to get in, theyre requesting tips on entry fees, who does that? Theres a big sign at the door that says if you leave, you have to repay the entry fee. Why would I tip when they have Nazi rules? Theyre obviously not paying staff well enough.
My friend and I had our wallets stolen by a pick pocket at the Gay 90s. Mine was stolen from my jacket pocket. My friends was stolen from his back pants pocket. Both of us had our wallets taken around bar close. We both lost cash, since we had removed our credit cards before going out.My bus pass, which was in my wallet was drained within two days. The thief dumped the rest of my wallet contents a couple of blocks away, which was retrieved by the Minneapolis Police Department. My friends wallet was found at the 90s with all the cash emptied.According to other reviews below, IDs and other items have been stolen at the Gay 90s before. The security staff at Gay 90s was helpful to me in trying to locate my wallet. However, they treated my friend, who is not white, like a criminal while he asked if his wallet had been found.
They have those pricey drinks and they dont have complimentary water. You have to buy a bottle of water for $3 to get water 💧 🙄 😒 🙃 Shame shame shame
Update: My best friend of over 30 yrs took me here in 2016 and we had the time of our LIVES!!! Cant wait to go again next time Im in town!! Good drinks, good folks & good music!!
I came here because I heard they over-pour. I came for happy hour and after ten minutes i asked one of the employees behind the bar how i could get a drink. Some guy outside the bar-top told me it was shift change and to be patient. I went next door.
The Gay Nineties is really a very dark-lit and claustrophobic place. Dont get me wrong: I enjoy it. The drag show is particularly fun and Im not big on drag. The food, sadly, is only so-so.I took my boyfriend there, once, and really disliked the archaic, tattered decor.Sadly, the only gay bar in the area that I actually liked -Boom/Oddfellows- went out of business a few years ago.
We have been coming to the gay 90s for many years. Tonight I was shocked when they asked us to move out of our reserved seats to seat someone more important. Upon this occurrence I asked around and found out others have had similar experiences here. I believe management at the gay 90s is slipping.
THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN! I watched security assault and rob someone my first time here. I can gladly say I will never be coming back! I’m glad I got out when I did.
That One Security Guard Is So Unfair I Tried To Show Them A Copy Of My I.D. Because I Dont Have The Hard Copy Of It He Was So Rude And Say Thats Not Going To Work And I Watched The Other Security Guard Accepts Someones Copy Of Their I.D. This Is So Unfair Because I Wanted To Have A Good Time Because I Love The 90s Now I Cant Even Enjoy Myself
Security is under trained and throw out words to enforce an unequal power dynamic with their clients that they want to kick out because it doesn’t serve them
Went for a drag show last night, drove over a half hour from our hotel only to get there and nothing was going on as all events are cancelled because of covid!! Probably a good idea to let people know the events are cancelled so they dont travel there and find that its closed!!
Back in the day, before gay bars became obsolete, The Gay 90s was the place to be. Long lines stretching down the block were typical on Friday and Saturday nights. But these days, in part because of over-zealous security and surveillance, and the fact that the lgbt community has become mainstream, at least from a night-life perspective, The 90s have become an over-sized shell of its former self. This cavernous multi-plex has all of the energy of an empty cargo ship. If your timing is right, you may be there during one of their semi-amusing campy drag shows where youre sure to get a lot of attention from the performers. Another plus is that you wont have to wait long for your over-priced drink. If you hate big crowds, and dont mind the invasive shake-down, The 90s can be a viable option for you.
I wanted a drink and my friend went up with me to help for i am new at drinking. And i was cut off by this one lady. Although the music way amazing, i was upset i couldnt buy a drink when they thought i was buying alcohol for my friend when i wasnt!
Omg Im from milwaukee but when i went to this club i had sooo much fun. The bubble room is fun have greatt music choices drinks are good also the drag queen show was very nice they were rasing money for this one lady i dont remember her name but it was a great show the performances was good to watch i was stuck in my chair.
Worst experience I’ve ever had at a club they stole from 2 of my friends at the club and tried to take my phone from me. They also told us to go to Alaska (Alaskan native). All around the staff was really rude.
Careful when u go to this club they stole my wallet and alot of thugs I made a complain and that people that stole my wallet told security to kick me out I told security that I dont have my wallet and still kicked me out I didnt want to make a seen cuz who does right when they treated u with cops security is curopted 🤨 just be careful when u go to this place.......
All I have to say is use CASH to pay for your drink! Was charged once for my drink then $22 for who knows what. This was my first stop downtown so it wasnt like i was drunk and forgot what i charged to my card.
Music could be better, gets repetitive for regulars. Beware of your debit/credit cards, because you will be overcharged! 😡 the bartenders need training
Went for the first time. Had a lot of fun! Everyone was really nice. Kinda trying to figure out the dress code tho saw some some guys in jockstrap. Was wondering if I could go shirtless.
LOVE ITTTT! Eggs n Drag Brunch is so amazing. Today i went to the Halloween eggs n drag brunch 2019, and it was my first performance! Anita, Eve, Rosie and Brandonna are all amazing! also, Logyn Spaid! Logyn is so so amazing as well. 10/10 need to go again! Happy to say ive performed on the stage!xoxo- @theonlyquixotic
They are OPEN AGAIN!! I love the Gay 90s
Well I love the atmosphere the drinks are good and strong my favorite place too go to when Im in Minneapolis but my big complaint is I asked for a couple of drinks and the bartenders said they were not properly supplied of alcohol to make certain drinks in 25 years of coming there I never have had that problem the manager needs to keep up with orders
Security will beat will beat you up and assault you for no reason when leaving. Unless you enjoy being assaulted and robbed never go here ever in your life
I met some of the most amazing men I could ever imagine who made me feel cut and sexy lots of flirts just what I love about men doing with me and after they close Ive been very Very well taken care of 😇💦
It was very nice and great music. It was a little empty. I went on a Saturday night and there wasnt that many people there. They had cages to dance in and poles as well.
Fun place with very interesting people and staff. The place has multiple bars with different settings. It hosts activities like karaokes and shows which male the experience fun and worth revisiting.
THE BARTENDER Parker IS THE BEST HUMAN EVER🤍🤍🤍🤍 love love love you should go here just for this bartender
So the place was good it was a vibe but there is so much wasted potential, the music sucks, I don’t want to listen to lizzo constantly, just need more songs to vibe too, the music honestly ruined it for me.
The security guard literally kicked us out because a friend was holding an empty glass of ice and he thought it had liquor in it so he physically assaulted her and kicked her out it was literally a water cup ! This place is so wack!
Albert the security guard literally wouldn’t let my sweet friend in because he asked “why do we need to be IDd again if we already have wristbands?” We spent $30 on tickets to the pub crawl they were hosting...
Im pretty introverted, whether its hella busy or not at all, always a great atmosphere. First gay bar I attended (2012); good impressions.
