Really enjoyed the show we went to here. Its a small, intimate venue. Watch out for the ledge at the back of the main room, we watched at least 5 people trip and fall throughout the night. The sound was good , the bartenders were friendly and attentive. Will be back for another show.
Favorite concert venue in Portland. The sound system is crisp, the staff are friendly, and the dance floor is always great energy. People don’t spend entire shows on their phones here, they actually go for the MUSIC
I have probably been to Holocene 40+ times in my 8 years in Portland. I try to go as often as I can to my favorite dance nights (Candi Pop, Sorry for Party Rocking, 22&Good4U series) but also often try something new every once in a while there too. Ive been to a few concerts there as well. What can I say? I just love Holocene. You wont like it if you dont like being packed in with sweaty bodies or if you dont like paying a premium at the bar... but if youre like me and youre there to dance and sing along to your favorite songs, youll love it. There really is something for everyone there (Emo night, throwbacks, bad bunny dance night, you name it!).
The atmosphere in this building is palpable from the outside. It has a bar, mosh area, back open room with a stage for anyone to take center stage. There is always great music and there’s a variety of themed nights to appeal to any type of music. Cannot recommend the 20 dollar pre bought tickets to cut the MASSIVE LINES that form at this popping night club 🙌🏾
Lots of degens show up here w no care for other people - me or my friends have caught Covid here every single time we’ve went. Inside and service is nice, but the crowd that shows up here makes it impossible to remember fondly. If you’ve got plans coming up do not go here. I mean read the 1 star reviews, bunch of idiots complaining that they used to require a Covid negative test. Absolute degenerates trying to party while they have Covid.
Such a cool venue!!! There are windows, so if its light outside its pretty bright inside, but honestly I dont mind!!! A cool atmosphere, plenty of space and SEATS. Plus they refill the water jug :)
Got kicked out, 6/7/2024, apparently I looked too 🍃? Not one person actually asked me what I drank or anything, they just shoved me out the bar. Tab was $22. Yes I was under the influence of legal 🍃. I was actually planning on finishing my beer and going outside for a break but instead I just got kicked out. I was standing at the bar looking crazy I guess? Who knows. Yes. My eyes get low, been told much lower than others, and yes my comprehension skills slow down sure, I’m sure I looked insanely drunk?! Was I yelling? Annoying people? Violent? Sloppy? No. I guess creepily standing at a bar? Again, no one talked to me like a real human being at all.Portland, Oregon, can’t even be 🍃 in bars! Not on emo night either. Man I went from looking forward to an epic night, yes under the evil influence, to being on the curb, sad and alone, too 🍃 🍃looking to be allowed to stay and party on. They finally allowed me to pay my tab. Again not one person asked me anything, I was just ignored. They said “can we get someone inside for you”. That’s all I got. Since I have HIGH anxiety and mental health issues I just nodded along and just let them push me around.I was just so out of control! I was so crazy! I’m real depressed out about the whole thing and probably won’t ever come back and I had such a great time at the last emo night. Now I wouldn’t feel welcome. Thanks to the awesome bartender guy who said something nice to me outside—you know who you are ☺️
My husband and I went to Holocene for the first time the other night, for a 90s/2000s dance party. Early in the night, I was getting creeped on by a man and his companion, and it completely ruined the mood for me. I wanted to go home and cry. But I told security, and the entire team immediately came to speak to me to determine exactly what had happened. They made it extremely clear that they do not tolerate that sort of behavior in their establishment, and they would do whatever I needed to feel safe. I ended up going back in and dancing my heart out until 1am, with security periodically checking in on me the whole time. At the end, they even gave me two drink tickets for my troubles!TL;DR fantastic space, decently cheap drinks, good DJ, incredibly kind and competent security. It is definitely a safe place for all sorts of vulnerable groups to let loose and have a blast.
Its a comfortable, smaller venue. Not too small, but its comfortable. The staff are helpful and very laid back while still being constantly busy. Ive only been there once but Ill gladly return if I can.
Kind of a cool venue. rough acoustics. very minimalist decor, but without the warehouse charm. bar staff seems a little beleaguered, but its pretty alright for some dancing.BRING earplugs. really.BRING a personal fan in the summer—unless you like your experiences downright equatorial.PREGAME at yr favorite dive bar; great cocktails, but all drinks feature some pretty light pours regardless of who pours them.EXPECT...uhm... lines for/in both gender neutral bathrooms on their white grl wasted themed ladies nights❄️✨👭🏼🤷♂️👭🏼👭🏼👭🏼👭🏼✨❄️if you catch my snow drift.
I have never not had a great night out here. All types are welcome, the beats are always on point, and they have great events.I do wish Holocene had more non-alcoholic options
Great atmosphere here and a great venue for live music.I watched some amazing bands playing. The Wild War rocked it while opening for Shannon Entropys album (Out There Ideas) release performance. They teamed up with NW Noggin to do something rad during their show. With the use of an EEG (and willing participants) and projection software they projected live brain scans of fans while listening to their performance. What? Awesome! Their vibe is Out There and the whole experience was spectacular.
We attended a Monday night concert (Jordana). Very inexpensive tickets. I thought the staff was very polite and professional. Covid vaccine checks at door were appreciated. No mask requirement but about 50% of folks masked. We did not feel the need to since it was not busy and we lurked at the back of the room near the partition. Overall a lovely space. Very clean (unlike other concert venues), good bartender, nice sound system. I felt very comfortable and Ill definitely look at more concerts at this venue.
Really fun spot with a cool vibe. The energy on the dance floor was spectacular.
First time at Holocene tonight - totally rad, the music rocked, the light show was ethereal, the crowd was electrified. The best part though? Josh the bartender- a tall glass of water let. me. tell. you. He made me the best cocktail I have ever had - a mezcal last word that I will dream about ad nauseum. Wishing he would tell me a last word every night before bed for the next 25 years. Holocene - I’ll be back!
At first the day was a little strange. but I had a good time, everyone was very friendly, yes I would return if you want to have a good time I recommend it
Always a good time. Came here last for the moth StorySlam, it was packed and wish that there was more seating , but they warned us in advance there would be standing room only.
Bartenders were great. Show price was good (not sure how much they take from artist, artist did mention 10% merchandise cut). Been to a good show and another about 6 months before. Only big difference is there wouldnt allow moshing. Even with a smaller crowd for the second show they wouldnt allow any moshing. Only 6 months apart, so I was shocked. Not sure of it was change in policy or security but tickets did not mention any rule surrounding dancing. High recommend because they put on cool shows, but confused by the change of heart surrounding dancing.
They overbooked the event I was standing outside for about an hour before I gave up because the line hadnt moved for an hourrrr. The event was just poorly planned and they didnt have enough staff to communicate what was going on to the attendees
Very beautiful. I loved the venue and the performers seemed to love it as well. I was with a friend whos a wheelchair user and that was his first ever concert. I dont remember this guys name but he was really really awesome and if it werent for him we would have been dogpiled by the crowd and not even be able to see the performers. we also popped out of the building a couple times to catch our breath and dude. this guy escorted us to our spot every. single. time. and he was so nice. super awesome. thank you to specifically that dude for standing up for us and making my friends experience an amazing one!
The show was great, the staff was better. The drinks were on parr. The A/C could use some help.
Decent venue, but has some issues. Process to get folks in the venue needs some work!! It was pouring outside this evening and the line just crawled along as they checked people in, all through one person at will call. If you have tickets, let them in and dont force them to make the line bigger than it needs to be!! Theres gotta be a better way. Like I said the venue was fine, sound was good, but they gotta work on their ticket and entry systems!! It wouldnt take much to make it LOTS better!!
Nice, clean venue with great vibes! We came for the Kylie Minogue tribute dance party and the music, visuals, bartenders, and crowd were all lovely!
Usually have a good experience here. I went to a show on Tuesday, however, and there was a “no arms up” policy that wasn’t made clear to the audience at all until moshing was already happening. It was clearly putting a strain on the venue, the bands, and the audience when security kept interrupting the mosh pit. I’ve never had problems of moshing stopping at this venue before (there was a huge pit at We Are The Union). If this policy is going to continue going forward it should be the responsibility of the venue to inform the bands AND the audience that there will be no arms up in the mosh pits in the form of an announcement of some sort. Usually good place for DJs and shows alike but bad communication and weird rules put a damper on what could have been a great night
Fun place to go with friends, have had good experiences with the staff. Feels clean and safe the times I have gone. I recommend getting tickets online before if you don’t want to wait in a long line. They offer food and drinks, but didn’t have vegetarian options. :)
Music is fantastic. Scene & club feel 10/10. Bartenders 10/10.Security 0/10 & staff surrounding that department. They like to prop open the womens restroom. Most of the time at night clubs women are barely coming out half dressed from the stalls. To prop it open is absurd and unlike anything Ive ever seen at any establishment. I asked Security and they said its an all gender bathroom okay, thats fine. But then you need to offer an only male and only female option as thats how the rest of the world works and everyone else is uncomfortable. If you wanted a gender neutral bathroom than great, build one than next to the rest of the bathrooms.More importantly why is there a male bathroom and no female bathroom?I mean the door was literally as wide open as you can think as Im waiting for my girlfriend to come out. It was an invasion of privacy to say the very least.
Hands down favorite dance atmosphere in portland. It’s like family there. Everyone does what they can to have a good time and allow others a good time as well. Friendly and responsible staff.
Cute place bathrooms creep me out tho I have major anxiety going in there as a woman.
I have been to this club for different events and today I have to applaud the security. Some people smashed a glass behind me and the pieces punctured My ankle and then my thumb when i try to pull it out. The staff Reacted quickly period they found out who did it and supplied me with bandaids and first aid cream The security staff girl that help me with so great. Thank you so much!
Went there to attend a wedding, but it is mostly a bizarre night club...
So much fun and affordable drinks. Bar staff were polite and fast! Perfect place to take out the girls to dance the night away
LOVE is little venue. Its got a place to chill if you don’t want to be in the crowd, a separate bar area so no sticky feet from spilled drinks, completely adequate bathrooms, and a decent sized stage.
They are very rude at the door, they judge everyone even tho the people at the door are the ones who should be judge free. There is a very rude gross ugly guy that works the door that is very stupid and doesnt know what he is doing, he should be fired because of how dumb this guy is. The guy at the door with ski mask should be fired
Fun club with a variety of music spanning across the ages. They seem to have special events, as well as repeating ones, that are both fun. Could be a bit cleaner, but a good experience overall.
The bartenders were very kind and attentive. The ambiance was beautiful, calm and relaxing. Such a beautiful space too. Thank you!
This place always has great theme nights. Great dance vibe. Tasty drinks. Always a cover and drinks average $8-10. Coat check inside for a small fee. Really enjoy this venue.
Honestly one of the best clubs in Portland. You get your drinks quickly and at an affordable price. There is plenty of space and drinks don’t get spilled all over you like at most of the clubs in the area. There’s even places to sit down and relax. I’ve never had a bad experience here. This place is a 10/10.
Great club especially when it comes to sorry for party rocking/satisfaction edm bangers (yes, rave goers). One star down for being really hot and warm inside, gotta do something with HVAC 😭 drinks is ok eventho mostly ice…sweat dripped and it smells like sweat inside 😢 cmon I’m backing you guys up to do something with the ventilation/AC
A fun filled party club. I liked music very much. I didn’t give 5 star coz it was kind of hot and humid, glasses weren’t available for water, plus we paid $25 as cover charge which was way too much, otherwise music and vibe wise it was fun :)
Holocene hosting Christian Kuria was an amazing show. The first night of his first headlining tour and he and his band nailed it. His guitar chops live go far beyond what can be appreciated on his recordings. I highly recommend seeing this budding master songwriter, singer, and lead guitarist live. You won’t be disappointed.
Been back 2 times since 2021 pride. Service and atmosphere were excellent. Whatever changes happened, keep it up. Staff night of 10.29.23 are phenomenal.Lol came here for pride and was let down. 12$ drink was taken by barback like two sips in. Set my drink down for a second and it disappeared with a bunch of empties that were a foot away. Was on list but still was made to pay full cover. The good DJs ended right at midnight when I arrived and the performances were so sleepy and quiet I almost passed out. What a rip.
New favorite place, staff is so friendly and the drinks are good. tons of fun event nights to look forward to! the quality of music depends on the dj lol but still fun to dance regardless. its even fun solo! im pretty shy and introverted, but ive already danced with and talked to so many people just by hanging out and having a good time.
I went for a Buffy the vampire slayer themed Halloween party and had just the best time. Great place, good drinks, had a coat check, and enough bathrooms. Will definitely go back.
This is a strange venue to see a band. The room with the stage is small and not protected well from noise in the general bar area. I saw Xiu Xiu there the other night and there were some people drinking and laughing in the bar area (loudly) and it really detracted from the show. I was standing very close to the speakers so it was even worse for those in the back.
Some awesome artists show up here! Venus is a bit tight, but this can honestly add to the experience. There is 21+ section in the back and a bar if you’re not trying to stand in the crowds.
Went for a 90s night... omg, blast from the past. I had to admit, at one point I got a little to excited and got up on a table to dance... security was so polite when they asked me to get down. I really appreciated the fact that they wanted to keep everyones vibe up. Drinks were great and price was more than reasonable for pdx.
Bar tenders were stellar. Wish I could have sat at the bar and just stayed right there. Who wouldnt? Beautiful people.I readily admit that your experience will be highly dependent on the music but treat the staff right and youll have a good time regardless.Sound is good, Ive generally had a great experience with crowds there. I only just experienced my first live music in the area behind the dance floor and it was cozy and nice.Cheers.
Best venue to see unsigned bands in pdx. Billie Eilish played there before she was famous!
After eons away from the world of live music, I saw both Xiu Xiu and The Lemon Twigs here in the span of a week. Existing feels a little different now. A wonderful, pretty intimate venue, definitely coming back.
Good artists but bad sound mixing. Drinks too weak for the cost. Bartenders are good but security is overly aggressive/ power tripping. While smoking I watched this British bouncer and his buttbuddy coworker harass multiple people. Probably not worth your time or money.
Its an interesting place. Not so thrilled with the setup, having half the space dedicated to the live show and the other sunken half unable to be utilized for viewing said show. But it did allow plenty of seating and the room was wired with sound. Main concert area is small with a platform in the back where you can get a view if youre short. The edge of the platform was intermittently illuminated making it hazardous. Mixed drinks were weak but served in glass barware. Best bet is the bottled beverages. Staff was friendly.
The music and atmosphere are great, just some of the employees -security, bouncers - take their job waaaay too serious
Went for the Club Blush event and despite it being advertised that theyd be playing particular artists they barely played even the same genre. Very odd and disappointing. If you go for free entry before 10, plan on arriving early so you actually make it through the line before 10.
Great night club with some really awesome theme nights. Just make sure you check out the theme of the night first. Ive had some really great times here. The lighting is pretty rad. Ive seen a show here too and its not a bad event space either.
Ive seen a couple of shows here! fun little place! I like how there are 2 levels and the artists are at a very personal level with the crowd! Lots of room to dance but can become very crowded! They have an extra room to expand for bigger shows! lights are always great!
Holocene itself is fine but we went on new years and the DJs were terrible. $45 cover for a 70s theme NYE party for them to play a handful of 70s songs. 90% of the time it was just a lame house beat. We went up to try to get them to play something good and they laughed at us.
I saw a great local band here once. The Erotic City Tribute Band. Please bring them back. :) If you want to get to talking with someone I suggest sitting at one of the bar stools. I had a brief chat with someone while I was there. I dont know why that person asked me about wine though. I was drinking water. And the dance floor gets packed pretty early. They have a few booth seats for those that want to listen and dont want to stand or dance. Watch out for the people who are drinking too much though. They might have been drinking a long time before they arrived. I would avoid staying late, unless you can call a cab or taxi. Rose City is a good one. As well as the Tesla cab. They cost about the same. Although, the Tesla is really quiet. Nearly drives itself, too.
Warehouse club. To be honest Music was decent to me(not so great but not so bad), drink was nice cause I could get whatever I want(Tequila sunrise was 8$), Coat check was generous(they accept card), People was great(queer-friendly and they really enjoyed). Was a lil asian girl alone, but I feel comfortable but I missed my friend so I can dance with them. Recommend going there with friends, maybe you can try Thai Champa before you go there.
Very very rude high and mighty bouncer at dance yourself clean Tonight. Event itself was terrible as well. Super low energy group. Would have been more fun listening to LCD Soundsystem in the park with a Modelo.Great place if you want to watch average Americans gyrate.
Sounds like people have had bad experiences here - but it likely depends on the night and who is working. The venue is decent but oddly set up in the sense that the little stage area definitely cannot fit 300 and some odd people. Needless to say, staff were incredibly friendly, provided water for both inside and outside use, and I even had a little conversation with the bouncer up front. They do a great job managing the place. Do note, however, my experience is based off the Against The Current concert that took place here. This was an all ages show which meant that the venue folks did have to take more care and not treat it like a regular night. Needless to say, I would come back for another show, its a very intimate venue, which i love, and the sound was excellent for all three artists that night (ATC, Chapel, Guccihighwaters) and blended well with all the genres of music shown off that night.
Update: Three stars instead of five because y’all need to get a ventilation system! Perspiration drips from the ceiling sometimes. I got Covid likely from here in June & some of my friends have also gotten sick there. Let’s have fun, but get some air up in there.Previous: I’ve been to three different events here, with very different vibes, over the past four years. Every one of those was great. Noche de Perreo was the most recent! The venue is a dynamic open space that can host an intimate concert, fun party scene, or total club-like night. Staff are friendly and chill, and drinks are good enough to get the job done. I’ll keep coming back!
Pretty good overall. Saw Roosevelt and Loyal here yesterday and it was a good experience. The interior is pretty industrial and low frills, thus the 4 stars. But, overall, its a cool intimate venue to see shows. Id go back.
Supposed to be a perreo night for $25 usd we got nothing but weird songs, super bad experience. I dont like holocene in general but today it was the worst
Really nice space with a decent system. Staff is friendly and helpful. Drinks are reasonably priced and the place is really comfortable and accommodating. I’ll definitely swing by next time I get the chance.
I love that Holocene is always hosting amazing and experimental shows during the week
Music was indie night and the DJ was ok. The lows where to low and to constant. The drinks where either so strong or couldn’t taste the Alcohol at all. I guess the bartenders where not consistent.
Great dance club. Good mix of spaces- crowded central dance floor but also a nearby floor with enough space to bring out the bigger moves and feel less claustrophobic. People (including guests) were nice and chill.
A portland classic, Holocene continues to book the best acts of emerging and exciting artists. Great staff and good solid drinks.
Fantastic place. Great vibe, good drinks, good prices. No complaints. Great place to have a live music experience.
I loved the space, was worried the acoustics might be overwhelming, but they werent. The live performances were great, the ambience, but definitely watch your step!
The atmosphere is fun and I find a lot of my friends here so thats nice. Some cool bands come through here too. BUT!!! As far as the drinks:The bar is too packed, no discernible line at all. I was standing at the bar and they actually helped people who arrived after me. So incredibly rude. And a double costs $10? Are you kidding me? This is Portland, and not downtown. I shouldnt have to pay more than $8 on a double well drink. Theres no reason to charge so much. If you do come and dont want to spend a fortune on getting tipsy, just be sure to get your drinks before you come here, bad service, high prices.
I really like the two stage and dancefloor setup they have at Holocene. The one drawback to the floor plan is the bottle neck to get from one stage to the other. The sound is also a bit spotty. If youre on the dancefloor, the sound is pretty good, but if you would rather be on the periphery, it wont be quite as good.
I saw Leith Ross and Searows here this summer. Lots of fun! Great intimate summer venue.
The bar service, drink quality and price are not good so perhaps prefunk and just buy one or two srinks to support the place.... The only dance club you dont have to drive downtown for. Great atmosphere for *DANCING*. People go there to DANCE. Relaxed atmosphere. Though I cant figure out why they dont use the other better, bigger side with the small stage.
Post covid Holocene is an absolute delight. I had so much fun there with my friends and cannot wait to go back. They have an eclectic variety of artists and DJs playing the space and a solid bar staff thats both capable and congenial. Definitely worth stopping in!
They had a great dance party called Dance Yourself Clean. Nice layout with multiple bars and dance floors. Place felt pretty clean even though it was at capacity for several hours. Drinks are op.
If you want to quietly stand and bob your head to your favorite acoustic artist, Holocene is okay.Clean venue with potential, but not somewhere to go if you want to have fun.
The lighting is really nice and downtempo here. it can get very crowded for some shows, making it hard to dance or carry your drink leaving only standing room. he downstairs area has plenty of room and couches to chill out on so you may want to plan on drinking outside the crowd. some of the more popular music comes to this location so show up early to ensure you get in.
Rude British Bouncer. Nice venue but could do with more seating. People go to ambient shows for peace. Bouncer doesnt need to be rude to those people.
Great little venue with a bunch of standup tables and seating! Reentry is allowed and the bartenders are super nice, tip them well.
Beautiful lighting, which creates a nice atmosphere. I couldnt pay the admission fee for the concert by card, but they have an ATM (near the restrooms) which only charged me 2,50 $ for a withdrawal (I have a European Visa card; all the other ATMs in the U.S. would charge me 3-5 $).
Went to see The Midnight and the concert was great. The acoustic equipment is done well and makes it all the more enjoyable! The place was clean and not sketchy feeling. Definitely recommend.
At this point, Holocene is a Portland institution. Hundreds of amazing live shows, and dance parties have been held under their roof. The place has been through many reformations, and the ambiance, sound system and bar just get better. Central SE location, not much parking so keep that in mind. You will love this place for drinks and dancing.
Good venue for 21 and up shows! Not so good for all age shows. Venue has some good artists come thru. The bartenders were awesome and holocene attracts a good-looking crowd. Sexy people everywhere.
I love this place. Very specious. Multiple dance rooms. Tasty drinks. Fun music and dancing atmosphere. They also hold a lot of events that support diversity in our community.
Great vibes. Can get kinda packed. I dont know if theres AC cuz It certainly didnt feel like it. Maybe I was just dancing to hard.
Been fun every time. Then again I love to dance.Update: Wow my review has been three 3 years old now? I have to add more, since then Ive come back again and again, nearly every friday, because I love it. What has me coming back for more than just dancing with or without friends is the staff. They recognize you and treat you very well compared to other places in PDX. I feel communal there now. Im sad Im moving to Austin, will miss the place. Also I should mention, I see the other recent reviews about security, and I have to push back on that hard, in fact, that they have been extremely measured and fair me on more than several occasions. This is an actual issue with me, being a bigger guy who sweats and so while dancing at other places, Ive been kicked out accusing me of being too drunk because Im all sweaty. I read these other reviews and I laugh because no, Ive only seen them remove people who are in soar need of it. Im sad to see any bad reviews. They talk to you, they let you know, they dont just kick you out for no reason. They are also big with having LGBTQ events there. I honestly havent remembered everyones name, but everyones been there for a long time and have had no issues. I will miss you guys!
Great venue for anything EDM. Saw Kasbo here and the vibe was great. Not too big of a venue, full bar (and water on tap which is huge), and the sound system is phenomenal. Would return in a second.
Well run night club. Reasonable cover charge, music is usually pretty good (lots of electronic DJs), and prices on drinks are fair. Nice that you dont have to pay for parking in the SE (if you happen to drive :)
Drove from canada to attend emo nite.Sister went for a drink. Was denied. Came back to our table and we were immediately kicked out. Bouncer girl held my sister down in Citizens arrest. I cannot believe what just happened? Debating on calling the media. Never coming back to Portland again because of this
Great spot. Clean and well kept. A few different areas so you can decide if you want to be in the middle of the crowd or lounging with friends. Tasty drinks and attentive staff.
Usually have a great time. Tonight I got accused of harassing people and kicked out. Absolutely ludicrous with no grounds towards the accusation. Will never go back after being treated the way I was. Just trying to dance and have a good time with my friends. Hopefully other patrons have better luck and more fun here than I did.
Went there for a couple of concerts and I really like the space and the installations are clean and the safe. The bar inside is pretty convenient. The people at the door are the best.
Cool urban vibe here. Great bar with snacks. Awesome acoustics and musician lineup.
Stinky and overcrowded. Way overpriced! $10 for a well vodka and sprite. Typical Portland venue: pay a lot, get jack. Jamison the security guard is laughably rude and seems to only love his job because he gets to kick paying customers out for unfounded reasons...I didnt personally get kicked out, but saw plenty of very sober folks getting kicked out for no reason at all (saw someone use the atm and Jamison kicked them out for taking too long and causing a line). Thinking now that they must do this on purpose so they can continue to oversell the venue space for more $$$. Very POOR-tland. Did I mention the stench of body odor? Very real.
The slowest most disorganized bar tenders I’ve ever seen. The Place isn’t worth the cover charge
This place would be in waaaay better shape without the door guy named J. He wears a hat and glasses. This dude has so many bad stories behind him. Please beware if you go to this club. Hes very likely to get overly active on checking girls and has the tendency to pretend to be the owner. Its amazing he still works here.
This is a pretty great venue because of its location and its variety of events. It can get fairly busy on some of the more popular dance nights but it also hosts live performances by a variety of local and touring bands.
Ridiculous requirement for Covid vaccination or negative test to attend events at Holocene. A policy that has nothing to do with health, now even going against the vast majority of the country and any reasonable thinking individual. It was wrong two years ago now it’s just a perverse policy to punish the non compliant.
We got kicked out for no reason. Jamison the security guard made the decision to kick us out based on a friend that drank to much. He had two drinks, he then proceeded to kick all three of us out. Ive gone the last 2 years, and definitely had more to drink on seperate occasions. He had an attitude with us when I tried to speak with him about the situation.
Some might call it a hipster wonderland but when you get right down to it, its a solid place to see some music, drink some drinks and shake it with the well, albeit quirky, dressed scenester folk. The have a unique set up with a DJ booth and dance floor in one room, lined with tables and couches in case a old breakdancing injury flares up, and a more intimate stage room above. I recommend looking for night that have both DJs and live bands playing as the time it pretty well so the music never stops. A full bar makes and an modern yet inviting industrial decor, complete with lights for the dance floor will make sure that you stay out past your bed time.
Didnt get to go in because they over sold tickets
Nice venue with horrible sound most shows. The sound girl desperately needs to outed be. Everytime I see shows here they sound sub-par and whats worse is that the musicians are constantly having to request sound changes, I went to a show tonight and two of the three bands made multiple requests to boost vocals on various members. A month ago I was at a show where the same sound girl was yelled at by the musician because she was so incompetent. REPLACE HER!
Great dance club, ever changing music themes is great! Good cocktails, it would be great if they added more exotic cocktails and higher end seating.
The music is not great in my experience. Drinks vary in quality based on the bartender. Clientele can be kind of rude. Main dance floor is kind of small.
Probably the most interesting club in Portland. Technically kinda a gay/lesbian club but really just an all around great club and great club experience. Very popular with people of all sorts of sexual orientations. Always great music, good decor and ambiance, interesting people.
Pretty much guaranteed a good time at Holocene. They host great events here- Ive been to SLAY, Emo Nite, Dance Yourself Clean, 90s nights, and multiple concerts at Holocene, and they do a great job. Cover can get steep (by Portland standards) later at night, and they do sell out events, so plan to arrive by ten pm if you dont already have tickets for a well-hyped event. Many of their larger weekend shows have a free photo booth, as well as the private photo booth thats permanently near the main bar, which prints your photo strips on the spot. Another pro-- Sassys (the dive bar version of a strip club, in the best way) is right across the street, and is a great way to end a night of dancing.
Hopefully the bar has good vibes still, Jason isn’t the best bartender I ran into. Not a nice person in his work space
Holocene is a great venue, but the performances can be hit or miss. The crowds can also be hit or miss. I have been to shows where the crowd and musician/s have been in sink and the place is hoping. On the other hand, there are nights were the crowd or the musician has sucked and it can throw off an otherwise good night.
Super cool interior and great drinks. This is a great place to go see a show or dance your booty off. Great booking agents since this place seems to have so many great shows regularly.
Its a pretty cool club! Different events/covers per night, loud music, lots of people, and lots of drinks. Ive had a pretty solid experience each night that Ive been.
They wrote an email with new covid policies and said to write back with questions. I wrote back and they did not respond after multiple follow ups. Their covid policies are rooted in fearmongering and are completely unscientific. I will not be attending any more shows here.
Showed up in town craving some heavy bass and dancing, found Holocene by chance and paid the $13 cover after vax card verification... decent drinks but somewhat underwhelming music.
Cool vibe. Friendly staff, and great acoustics! Quadeca had a great set!
Went for a global event and the staff was really nice. One of the bartenders warned me that a person I was talking to was a known predator, I will forever be grateful for that.
Super dope disco night
Holocene is where you go to dance. And for that it is good. Check their website or the Mercury, and make sure youre not so fashionably late that youre waiting forever in line to get in.Theres plenty of space to see or be seen, plenty of space to dance, and the crowd is far less douchy than the spots in Old Town.Drinks are crazy expensive for SE Portland/Buckman, and nothing special, so tie one on before or after.Parking is also weird in the area, but the #15 runs late into the night.
This place is usually pretty packed. They have a variety of different dance nights during the month. Its loaded with a lot of young people, so if youre on the prowl, make sure he/she is legal.
Pretty cool vibe, just wish there were more bartenders or a second bar
Very cool venue. The somewhat small upper room allows for an up-close and cozy experience.
Everytime iv been here its been for some crazy dance party and I always have a good time. Big large space with lots of room for people watching and dancing. They throw good parties.
Amazing venue with an amazing view very intimate and cheap drinks what more could you ask for
The venue is really cool and big, the bartenders always have a nice vibe, is nice to see they have access for Wheelchair 👌
The lights guy, Spencer, is an ANGEL. I told him I have strobe light sensitivity and he cooled it down with them so much for the rest of the time I was there. As a disabled person, things like that really make me feel human again. Ily Spencer thanks for being you
Great venue. I would come here for any show. Service great and reasonable prices. The place is spacious and well thought-out with great lighting, decorations and air quality.
Tried to go to the event 9/17 and they required vaccine card to get in. If thats their policy they should post that somewhere. Who is still carrying around proof of vaccine still at this point?
It was Amazing seeing Rare American there with the intro from Krooked Kings it was just awesome finally seeing the Bands, plus it was a very nice venue.
Portland seems to love their large, open lounge type music venues. Nice bar staff, a coat rack for when you need it, and two different stages provide all the entertainment you could want.
Very cool place with good vibes. I saw a poet, here but I hear its a great place for dance and music as well.
Pretty cool place - the night I went it was packed! The bar made great drinks, but the line was really long. Dj was ok, nothing special - id go back
Young. That is what I felt there. I thought that I was in a different place. I hipster place with a lot of hip young gay people! The DJ was horrible. Every song only lasted 45 seconds. Cut off in the middle of a line. It was odd.
Always a great time. Yummy drinks too! 🍸🍹
My friends and I cant stop talking about how much we miss this place! Emo nite happened here on a monthly basis pre-covid, as does candi pop and a few other really cool events. I just miss holocene so much and cant wait to go back.
I ordered a Gin Tonic, but got a Gin with tap water instead of tonic water. Afterwards I asked them why they gave me Gin with water and they said that this is their home brew tonic water but it was just normal tap water. Bad customer service of a bartender to lie and sell crappy drinks to your guests who are willing to spend money at your place.
BEST CLUB IN THE CITY!!!!
Great bar, food and Dance floor(s). Have a stage for live music and djs. One of my favorite venues.
We have our yearly Holidays party here and they are awesome
Books a lot of great music, but doesnt sound so great - is very cramped... and the idea of playing 2 sets of PAs opposing from one another is a terrible one.
Bands look cool at Holoscene, but they only sound meh. They seem to get bands with great video shows though, so maybe you dont need good sound? Right?
Had lots of fun! Good venue with affordable drinks
Fun vanue. The DJs are always playing something worth dancing to.Friendly bartenders. Stiff drinks. Prices are reasonable.Keep an eye out for the DJs playing 90s music.
If you like a big dance party with a slightly older crowd (older meaning over 25) this is the place. Good music. Cool spot.
Great venue. Warning: During shows there is nowhere you can talk without yelling
Its to load to talk to anyone and there was a line to get in even though I had a 🎟. The line to the bar was so long I didnt really want to wait to get a drink.
So much fun, good vibes and yummy drinks!
Slicked back hair bartender wouldnt serve me, Called my friend the N word and a f*****t. Couldnt believe the attitude of bartender. There is a white supremacists protest tonight, might play a factor.embarassed....
Attended a wedding reception.Lovely and well laid out facility.Only street parking.Clean restrooms.Friendly staff.
Easily the worst DJ Ive ever heard in a public space. Awful music, with no desire to be better. Not worth the cover charge.
You know that one club in that 90s show you watch thats somehow also a bar and concert venue? And is kind of inexplicably huge? Yeah, they made that a thing.
I regularly attend events at Holocene, good atmosphere and good bartenders, you can actually get a Moscow mule here! good place for dancing
The door security is unbelievably rude and irrational. Kicked out someone who was using the atm inside to get cash for the $5 cover and told them they were trying to get in without paying and made them leave
Holocene has always been one of my favorite spaces to go dancing at, still is but Im sad that they no longer serve their delicious tacos and hoping that someday they will bring them back post pandemic.
Well run venue with handy bar service and pretty good sound for a variety of musical styles.
The show was amazing! The venue was comfortable and the staff was very nice.
Fun energetic crown. Had a good DJ for their Latin night..think it was verano sin ti
Cozy intimate venue loved the puma blue concert
Love the fact based covid policies, friendly bouncers and bartenders, and the electronic shows. Face melting sound system.
Nice venue. Was really impressed with the setup. Will keep in mind for future events.
Great comfortable live concert venue for indie/pop/dance !! 🎶
Great small venue. Clean, well managed, prices are reasonable.
British bouncer called woman a c **t and a b **** for no reason and was grabbing her. This was in front of everyone too. Not okay.
Great vibes when the crowd is right sometimes gets a little too packed
They play their music super loud, and it keeps me and my one year old up at night. These people don’t know that their are apartments in the area and that they blast their music
This is a really cool venue with eclectic music offerings.
Great venue. Great drinks. Not super high priced.
Holocene is a class act. The atmosphere and the music is what makes it. Food is excellent, drinks are great but a little pricey - worth it though
They have great shows for the Latinx community and those that enjoy music in Spanish.
V*x proof in 2022 going on 23? Kyrie doesn’t approve and neither do WE! Archaic…
Fun venue that hosts a lot of local events. Ive never been disappointed- just wish they had AC in the summer.
Decent club. Little small. Good themes and artists coming through.
One of my favorite venues to catch a show. Very relaxed
Great night with 40 year celebration of Fleetwood Macs rumours album .. all great apart from over an hour q to get in...
Fun Halloweekend destination. Weird choice for DJ and graphics projected on the walls but overall a good time
Really cozy concert venue. All around great its clean and its got good acoustics.
Great venue with plenty of sound throughout the upper and lower stages. The only concern I have is the lack of trashcans.
Bartenders make good drinks but service is slow. Nice place for watching a dance band.
Great club with a fun atmosphere.
