The trapp is an amazing safe space for myself and my queer friends to relax, socialize, and dance. The security make sure we’re all enjoying ourselves, but don’t hesitate to take action and accountability when necessary. The bar staff are very friendly, and knowledgeable about mixing and making drinks not on the menu. The menu inside is accessible to all patrons, and easy to read. The bathrooms are clean, and easily accessible including a bathroom for ADA accommodations. The owner is an angel, as she walks around and talks to all patrons, welcoming them and making them feel safe and valuable. The drag queens are very friendly, and encourage inclusion and respect, especially to those who don’t consume alcohol, and also encourage people to never drink and drive. I look forward to the future of SunTrapp and can’t wait for the memories with my friends to come.
Very happy to see this fine, historical establishment is reopened.Pros• great vibe, indoors and out• same lovely people, same musk, same atmosphere•Better music!!! Honestly a relief from Milk and VersNeutral• Never had an AMF taste like that beforeCons•very slo bartenders (but they’re probably still new since it opened recently! The lines were very long, and I spent longer at the bar than necessary)• Bar menu very small and rotates out too fast to read!• never had a Tokyo Tea like that
Pleasantly surprised! I stopped in on Friday because I heard about the reopening and had low expectations—historically the staff has been somewhat unfriendly and the music was awful—that’s all changed! You can tell the new owner and staff have put a lot of love into making the Sun Trapp a safe and welcoming space. The line to get in was long but worth the wait. Thanks to Mary for bringing this iconic place back and making it better than ever! 🌈❤️
Cute queer bar! Me and my gf went here, was my first real bar, T-Daddy was really fun and helped me figure out what I wanted to drink because I’m still a alcohol virgin 😆
This is my favorite place to go out to on the weekends. Great environment, great dancing and some decent music. Just sad that it’s been closed since about January with no reason or reopen date. I know the Suntrapp regulars would appreciate some explanation or at least updates. Instead of the radio silence that we’ve been receiving, like disconnecting their phone line. Hoping that suntrapp will be opening back up eventually if not that would truly be tragic loss of a safe bar space for the lgbtq+ community.
Currently closed without a “reopen” date.Overall not a bad place. I’ve been here a few times and had a few rough encounters. The management is not great. There was a guy on the dance floor stroking himself while watching girls dance on the dance floor. When we talked with management about it they brought the guy over to us. Then the manager and the guy proceeded to argue with us and try to pressure us into backing down. They told us unless we have a video of him being inappropriate they won’t do anything because he was part of the security staff. Just make sure you are prepared to take care of yourself because staff will not. Be careful out there not everyone that says they are allies are actually allies.
Well I found out the real meeting of the name The Sun trap or should I say the sun entrapment! So they have signs up and tell you how to park and where you can park. And then they tow your car when you park the way they ask you to. Then they have their crack head friends charge you $300 to get you car back. No where does it say you cant park here, infact it actually tells you its OK to park here.
Best bar in salt lake. Every member of the staff are amazing!
I bought two tequilas with my credit card and a few minutes later my friend luckily realized that the guy serving at the bar passed my card to another person who was next to us who made a purchase in one drink. My friend reacts and takes the card from his hands. The boy only managed to apologize and the guy at the bar just looked at us and said absolutely nothing. I recommend not paying with a credit card!
Very queer friendly and enjoyable vibe if its not absolutely packed or dead empty.Would definitely come back!
Lots ofWomen but it was fun. Only 4 bar tenders. Took forever for drinks.
The Sun Trapp is so amazing again. The best queer dance club in Utah. Beautiful people on both side of the bar, great DJs and such a fun atmosphere. But if youre planning on going on a weekend get there before 11pm. By 11pm there is usually a line of over a hundred people waiting to get in. I think it is worth the wait but I would rather spend that time on the dance floor. The club has gone through some changes of ownership in the past few years. But the current owner is an amazing lady that also really knows how to party.
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE ONE STARS!Honestly, I used to love this club and the fellow employees and bartenders that Ive built friendships with, but I recently had an encounter with one of the alleged owners. I was trying to assist a woman drunk out of her mind and get her water but I guess my intentions were misconstrued. The manager was very rude, dismissive, and did nothing to help out that very drunk woman and assumed I was hitting on her at a gay club…. While trying to get this woman some water I was asked to exit the club. Despite explaining my intentions he had already caused a scene. He did nothing to help out that woman who had too much to drink. What a shame. Do better Sun Trap!
Went there this weekend and the bar was closed. Some of you suggest it’s been closed for a while. I really think this is a nice place and I hope it reopens soon. In the past it’s been a pretty fun, safe place to go.
I have love the SunTrapp and am so happy to see it open again. It’s much better now than it was with the previous management, but it could really use some simple improvements that would make the experience much better. The drinks are absurdly weak—i bought a cocktail this weekend and tasted zero alcohol in it and felt no effects. They really need to open the outside bar again—the line for drinks was about 20 mins long which was disappointing. Also, it was a Chappell Roan themed night last night, but hardly any chappell roan was played. You can’t advertise a themed night and then hardly stick with the theme. The inside desperately needs more air conditioning and fans—the dance floor felt like 120°. The outside could also use many more porta potties. Otherwise, vibes were good, music was pretty good, and the workers are nice. Looking forward to seeing some improvements :)
**UPDATED**The owner and manager care about making this a welcoming and safe bar. They went out of their way to meet with us and learn about the pup community and start hosting us! Im excited to see how the future of our community grows with The Sun Trap.
Best New Year’s Eve Party I’ve been to! It was super fun, DJ had a great music and connected well with the crowd. Looking forward to the next parties 💜💜
I enjoyed my time here. This place was actually my first LGBTQ bar. People are friendly. Especially the workers. Sadly I moved back home to Cali so won’t be able to come back 😭 but thank you.
I can’t even explain how I was treated this Saturday at sun-trap I thought this was a safe environment for lgbqt and color but by my surprise I am mistaken me and my friend were going to get a shot from the bartender “Travis” and he was extremely rude to us we order 4 shots and it was time to pay when we were paying the bartender “Travis” he then said do you not know what tip is ? We then said yes but why would we tip someone that is so rude he then said do you wanna get spread with soda we said do so you want us to call management he then sprayed us with soda and a security stepped up we explained to him he said he understood and that’s not right also to mention we have 7 witnesses beside the fact the manger didn’t even ask for our side of the story grabbed my friend by the back pinching him by the way the manger name is “Jodie” she is super aggressive and when we stepped outside she did say get out of here you “N” word we got it on video also so suntrap this is the way you treat your paying customers not to mention I bought 4shots asked for a refund and was told try in the morning ? I thought out of all places this was the safe place but just racism and discrimination is all that is here ? I will be taking further action at any cost
My friend and I waited in line for 30 minutes to get in and as we got super close to the front I accidentally knocked someone’s empty beer can off of the railing onto the floor and the alleged owner “Mr. smith” came over and started yelling at us asking who’s can it was and we all told him that it wasn’t ours. It was on the railing and it got knocked off. Mind you, there were already 3 other beer cans on the floor that had been discarded. We then get up to the front of the line and the ID checker told us we had to wait. “Mr smith” came and told me, my friend, and two other guys we barely knew that we weren’t allowed in. I tried to explain what happened, and tell them that the two other guys we were standing with weren’t even with us, but Mr smith wouldnt listen to a word we had to say. So not only was mine and my friends night ruined for no reason, but two guys who literally had nothing to do with me had their night ruined as well. I understand that bars get rowdy and management has to keep things orderly, but I am not the kind of person who would throw my trash on the floor. The fact that Mr Smith wouldn’t so much as have a conversation with me was so disrespectful and uncalled for. Had he decided to listen to me, or anyone else in the line about what actually happened, I would have offered to pick up the trash and throw it away. I have been to suntrapp many times, bought many drinks and tip very well, and have always enjoyed it but after this, I will never be going back.
Words getting around SLC fast that this is NOT the place to party anymore. From managers screaming racist profanities (on camera!!), to almost everyone having a story of being kicked out due to ego-driven older people (Mr Smith) operating this hole in the wall, this place will get no more of my money!! Wouldn’t be surprised if this place is shut down within the next year from other recent reviews
This has become more of a neighborhood bar where everyone is welcome. It doesnt feel especially gay or straight but just very welcoming. The bartenders are polite, friendly and respectful. The drinks are a solid value. My only caution from years past is that there have been some car break-ins, not so much at the bar, but in the area with parking so public transit or an Uber/Lyft may be better (and that does eliminate the driving under the influence concern).
Travis was such a rude bartender. Not a safe place for lgbtq or people of color. Manager called patrons the “N” word after kicking them out bc Travis sprayed them with the soda hose. There is absolutely video of her saying this don’t let them lie to you. Also this used to be a safe place as a gay bar and now there’s tons of unsafe people there. Do not come bere
Ive been to pretty much all of the gay bars in town. I always end up having more fun at Sun-Trapp. There are bigger, fancier bars; however, its here that is actually more fun and that fills up the most. I attribute that to the DJs, who actually pay attention when the crowd doesnt like a song and fix it. Fridays are packed, and Saturdays are super-packed. I dont feel judged if Im not wearing name brand.Ten or more years ago there was an older, sadder crowd here and it was more about a cowboy theme. But now, the vibe is college-aged, and I like it because everyone dances and there is just more energy. There are also some straight people in the mix, but I also like that because my straight friends will go.Other bars want a $10 cover and the drinks are more expensive. Ive left other bars that dont fill up and that hasnt happened here for a long time.
This is the first place I felt comfortable going out fem, when my transition started. I hope everything is okay. Please talk to the community, give us some sort of update!-Zion
Really feel off the past couple years 😭 i’m not sure why they got rid of weekend drag and hired a dj that censors everything like a stake dance. love the price but they need to step up the entertainment
This place is trash. The people are trash. The staff is trash. The staff will hit on you even via Grindr, then just stop talking to you. Yes, Im talking to you Mr. Deacon (real name is Josh I believe).Small dancefloor; long wait times. You can do better than this place. We all can.Im glad I was able to contribute to lowering your overall rating.I hope you close down.... Permanently.
Its honestly a great bar with great prices. With workers who see you more than a customer, but someone who desevers their respect. A little chessy, but they truly can see people that way compared to the other bars near there. And with great atmosphere and games, and relevant tv shows.
Cheers for queers! It always feels like home here! Unlike a lot of LGBTQ+ spaces, it doesn’t feel like a meat market for attractive gay men only. As a trans woman I feel like this is not just a space I’m welcome in, but a space I’m celebrated in. Cannot recommend more!
Love this place, always have a good time and the bartenders never disappoint!! They put up with me even in my drunkness! The love them and they love me!!🖤🖤
I love a good queer bar, but you better believe I keep going back because they have the best bartender, Natalie. She is the queen of The Sun Trapp.
So extremely sad and upset. My friends who are female got attacked by men at this bar and received little to no help from security at first. Then it escalated to the point that people got seriously injured. If security had helped when they first asked and called the police, things may not have been so bad. Very upset that security and the sun trapp didn’t protect those who are vulnerable. Seems like women are often ignored in their cries for help until it’s too late. I hope whoever was in charge of security last night loses their job and that the sun trapp takes steps to show accountability for what happened.
Whats up with these reviews? Im new to Utah and this is my first time here. The vibe here is good. People are super nice and its one of the cleanest LGBT+ bars Ive been to. Travis the bartender is super nice, professional, attentive, and seems to have a lot of empathy. Unique (yes I had to look at his name tag) was super fast and accurate. Ive been to 5 bars in Utah so far and this is the best bar team Ive seen. (Sorry Black Sheep and Rainbow Saloon... I heart yall, but found a bar to beat ya) Also... super comfortable vibe for all ya cis/straight folks.
Kyle, one of the bartenders constantly inserted himself into peoples conversations to give his worthless two cents. He was unfriendly, unkind, unprofessional and deserves to be unloved by anyone unfortunate enough to have ended up in his bar.I felt excessively uncomfortable and the bar is very discriminatory for a place meant to be a Queer Bar. It wasnt a safe space and I was accused of being trans by a patron in the bathroom when I used the girls (Im afab)I reported the transphobia to staff who shrugged and said that I should have used the bathroom for my assigned sex (IM ASSIGNED FEMALE)I would call the alcohol pisswater but its the only decent thing about the place. My table had drink droplets, there were sticky brown, pungent stains I assume were resin on the seat I was in and it felt like the employees were waiting to die.Perfect place to drink until you forget who you are because youre depressed. Nobody will approach in a friendly manner or genuinely care about your well being.
I used to come here many years ago, and maybe thats the problem. This place isnt very fond of its past and dont encourage the older crew to hang about. But this place has definitely changed and not for the better. The vibe is somewhere between weird and actually hostile. The clientele may be gay but I really wouldnt call this a gay bar anymore. I assume thats what so many previous posters mean about no longer a safe space. Theyre right.I cant say what sort of crowd this place is trying to attract, since no one seemed to be really happy there when I was there. But the bartender made it fairly clear she couldnt care less. And I certainly cant recommend it anymore. But, hey to the previous management: Know you are missed and thanks for the memories
This place is NOT an lgbtq safe space anymore. Travis was rude. I heard a worker call someone the “N “ word… I will not be coming back. This breaks my heart because this used to be such a great place.
Milk is honestly more fun. Sun trap is crowded, but everyone is very young and there’s a lot of straight men for a “gay bar”.Also, my friend who’s literally a bartender was told her ID wasn’t good enough and she wasn’t allowed in (I saw this happen to multiple people that night). So I suggest bringing two forms of ID just in case so this doesn’t happen to you.
This place is amazing. It houses some the best bit*** in town. The staff is amazing, and everyone who goes only make this place better. Definitely one of the most friendliest, fun and energetic places I’ve been to in a while. Micheal and Riley are awesome, and always manage to make my experience there the best. Overall great place to hang out on the weekends, create new memories, and meet some of the coolest, best people.
Thank you for giving me one of the best times Ive had in SLC! This bar was amazing, the drinks were great and affordable, the music was the best Ive heard in the past year Ive lived here (seriously DJ Bentley knew how to read the room and put all types of music including reggaeton) and the different environments were so much fun. I will definitely come back!!
This is an awesome amazing gay bar. With great friendly staff. Drink are cheap, no cover, and no proof of vaccination required to get in. The new manager whos a lesbian is amazing she and get girlfriend are so nice and talk to everyone. Mr. Smith is amazing hes such a sweetheart hes by far the most friendly gay guy Ive met. Kelby, is one of the bartenders at the Sun Trapp and he is also one of the nicest sweetheart of gay guys Ive met. The staff at the Sun Trapp is amazing and nice as well as super supportive of the lgtbq community. Dont belive all the bad things you hear about this club. Come find out and make up your own mind about the Sun Trapp Club.
Went there for Pride Weekend and it was amazing! I have had the pleasure of personally meeting one of the new co-owners, Mike Smith, and anyone who says the trapp is no longer safe for LGBT+ people due to management has no idea what they are talking about. The previous owners have led a smear campaign against them with no real evidence. If you read the bad reviews alleging transphobia/homophobia you will notice that no one provides actual examples of said behavior and they are basically copy-paste. Mike is a phenomenal person who engages in activism, particularly advocating for men’s mental health. The bar is even more electric, kind, and wonderful as it was before! Come see for yourself!
I literally watched one of the bartenders use the urinal then go behind the bar and start working without washing his hands. guy in the clown makeup and blue jump suit. gross.
Sun Trapp is hands down one of my favorite bars to go to. The staff are super professional and are awesome to deal with. Shout out to Mr. Smith, that guy goes above and beyond to make my friends and I feel welcome!
An lgbtq+ bar that actually has so many lgbtq+ people. I loved the diversity of people there and the counter-culture of SLC. It was super busy with a long line outside. There happened to be a drag show the night I went. The bar tender was nice and helpful. Might be weird to say but the bathroom situation was different than Ive ever experienced and totally chill. Its shared, any gender at any time all use the multiple stalls or urinals. I wish more bathrooms werent so segregated.
I love the atmosphere here, pool is always fun, drinks are incredible, dance floor gets wild on the weekends! The staff are very professional and make sure I am being treated professionally and fair. I will continue coming here and supporting this awesome spot in slc! By far my favorite bar downtown. Michael is a very professional guy, knows how to run a bar and a business. I’d give 10 stars if I could ❤️
I was a frequent goer here and can’t believe I never left a review! Oops! This was my favorite go to spot in Utah for a good cheap drink and inclusiveness. I love the long islands and they’re freaking MASSIVE 😂I miss this bar so much! I’ll be back in next year though. See y’all soon! ❤️
Great place to make great memories!! Took my friend here for a birthday celebration . Amazing dance music playlist, Ducky (the bartender) was so charming and good at remembering all the drinks, the atmosphere was perfect, the place was packed full with a beautiful blend of all kinds of people. Very fun, welcoming, and great place to let loose!!!
Shined a light in a bottle they served and bugs were floating around in it. Disgusting place. Counters are sticky, had to clean my shoes because of stickiness, and just dirty overall. I give this bar a zero and I do lots of visits around America and other countries.
Went on a Friday night. It was packed! Affordable drinks, friendly staff, and the music was great. DJ was giving all the pop girls. Will definitely be going again when visiting town.
This is a well known gay bar in Salt Lake. Though I am not gay I have stopped here a few times for a drink because it is close to where I work. They are super friendly and great prices on drinks. Super large patio that is nice and relaxing. The neighborhood is pretty sketchy though. During the week is lots of fun. It gets a little to wild for me on the weekends, but if you are looking for wild weekends this is the place for you.
We came across this place randomly are were SO glad we did! What a great find!!!! The bartender was wonderful, drinks were reasonably priced (cheap even), the front bar was fun and low key, the back bar wasnt open yet but we really enjoyed playing pool and darts and other games with large tvs everywhere. Theres a back patio thats gorgeous. When we were there, it was definitely a slower part of the day which was nice, but we could tell that place gets packed and i bet its a blast. We will be back!!!!
I absolutely love them! They are a great alternative lifestyles bar and are accepting of all factions. There is an agreement of gender neutral bathrooms, the drinks are great, and the staff is awesome. Definitely a bar fit to come back to over and over again.
Awesome place. There was an insanely long line to get into The Complex for the show we had tickets for. So instead of waiting, we decided to find a warm seat here for some libations. Every employee was kind and welcoming. Every patron was talkative and accepting. Very good experience. I learned that The Sun was the first gay bar in Salt Lake and that it merged a few years back with The Trapp Door, which is where this location currently is, and they renamed themselves The Sun Trap. Its not the cheapest place to drink, but because of its vicinity to The Complex, theres no other competition around to steal our business. Im sure anyone can come here and find warm and accepting hearts.
May seem to be LGBTQ+ friendly on the surface, but isnt any longer deep down in management. Its no longer a safe place. Management will also accuse you of stealing your own items. Be sure to have receipts for the items you take with you to prove they really are yours.
Great prices on drinks, bartenders are very friendly, lots of space and good music. They have a nice pool table and dart boards plus a really nice patio. The bartenders Randy and Tanner are great so if either are there youll be treated well 👍. Only complaint would be that the cocktails are really weak but thats because of state legislature, not them. Well worth the drive for me!
Went here a few months ago. The DJ started screaming at people who had their mask down even temporarily. I mean downright screaming and threatening. He then singled out a random guy and started threatening him. For some reason he thought he was “straight” and then went on about how horrible straight people were for about 5 minutes. It was so BIGOTED and disgusting we left (and I’m a lesbian). So much for “love and tolerance!”
As other reviewers pointed out, this place has definitely gotten more packed on the weekends over the past few years. However, given the pace of gentrification and development around North Temple (two blocks away), this really doesnt come as a surprise. Theres a DJ Friday and Saturday nights. No cover, and the beer prices are very reasonable. They have a pool table, darts and a huge patio. The crowd is very mixed with respect to both sexual orientation and ethnicity.
Service is great, the crowd is generally friendly despite the weirdos that want to talk to you about their problems. Drinks arent too expensive. However the bartender Trapper is very rude to customers and hes probably driving your tips down.
I stopped by here with some friends while stopping over on our way from Boise, Idaho to Las Vegas, Nevada. We stopped here after an amazing meal at Purgatory. This place has a good ambiance and is rather large if you include the patio area. Since it was a warm summer night, outside felt AMAZING. This is a predominately GAY bar-- so, if youre not okay with that-- you may want to avoid this establishment.I didnt buy anything because their chip reader was out, but my companions had some cash and bought some beer. There was an ATM if I really wanted some cash, but I was still super full from dinner. If I was a local, Id visit this establishment often because it looks as if a good time to hang with friends. It was a Wednesday when we went, so not a lot happening. There were lots of people there still-- laughing, and having a good social time.I will visit again the next time I am in SL,UT!
Update:July 24 2020I would give 0 if possible. Would not recommend to a friend! Tonight I decided to give trapp another try. To my dismay after explaining that I will not give over any forms of payments because I’ve had not 1 not 2 but 3 instances where things were totally wrong and some even fraudulent. With the same “bartender”. So I’m greeted by one of the owners. Not pleasantly. He asks me to describe the said bar tender and I do. Instantly he gets defensive and even angrier. The bartender in question is his husband the other owner. So he spouts out a rant about how he’s the most honest person. Pride stopped him from hearing that his business partner and lover isn’t quite as squeaky clean as he thought. I was accused of being a liar and a hater only trying to ruin their reputation on Yelp. No I’m warning anyone that still goes to keep an eye out and be careful. That’s the whole point of this isn’t it. To warn other customers. I’ve heard trapp is the greatest bar and I’ve heard it is the worst bar. Take my experience and decide for yourself. I will never be stepping foot here again. The most recent incident. we left no more then 10 minutes after arriving and are bill closed out for 34 dollars several hours later. So from my experience as a business student. They’re taking all your credit card information and starting a transaction regardless of wether or not you bought anything. They can give you your card back and still have it in the computer. It’s a shady way to do things right now. I’d give an alternative but I think they don’t need any help from a hater on Yelp. 🙄
Awesome place to be and have drink! Saturday and Sundays are the best. They care for safety and acceptance
Love the place, but the door lady is the absolute WORST.The place is super fun. But every time we get to the front of the line, the door lady does something rude to one of my friends. It is such a turn off every time. We’ve never had a problem at any other bar.
I came to the sun trap for a great night. But Jay, the female bouncer denied my friend from South Carolina. We called the police. They approved his ID as being not fake. But after confirmation to the bouncer, she denied access to us. The officer said we can go to a better place for a fun night. Do not come here if you are from out of town. This establishment lost our business.
They didn’t let me in because my covid-19 vaccination card said I was female but I am male. The girl in front of me got in with a QR code concert ticket so I tried to show him a concert ticket as well that I had to be vaccinated for and he got SUPER angry with me. I literally saw him accept a concert ticket of the girl in front of me as prof and then I tried and he wouldn’t let me in. So much for being vaccinated lol. Awful bouncer. The other bouncers were super friendly and typically I have a great time at trapp, this was not what I consider normal for the sun trapp. I hope I don’t have to see the bouncer again from 12/18/21 at midnight on Saturday night. He’s not up to par with trapp.
Fabulous drinks and a very large outdoor area. There are even tents outside to keep you warm in the cold months. The inside is run down, which would be fine normally. Sadly there are many different levels and slopes in the floor that make it difficult to navigate in the often dim lighting.
Decent Bar, more of a locals hang out. Not a good flow setup dance floor is in the middle of the bar. Strong drinks and a chill outside back patio make for a good time though. Check it out when you have time, and yes it is a Gay Bar all the time ; -)
It doesn’t feel like it used to. I previously gave it a 5-star review and I wanted to just delete it. Google won’t let you delete reviews, so I’m updating it to a 3. It’s not horrible, but it gives no reason to come back…
The sand trap on a Saturday night is one of the most fun places in Salt Lake City to go. DJ Naomi totally kills it on the dance floor with an interesting mix of pop music house trance dubstep trap Etc... The bartenders are quick and get you your drinks quickly. The clientele are super fun and friendly. The only downside is the number of straight people who have discovered what a fun bar this is. There is occasionally a wait to get in.
I wish I could give a higher rating because I do enjoy going there, but the biggest disappointment is their DJ, specifically DJ Wondercat. He used to spin on Friday nights mostly, but now I see his name all over their calendar, which I dont understand. I dont have anything against him, and hes actually cute even, but he just doesnt know how to DJ. He messes up transitions between songs and his music is really boring (mostly hip hop that keeps going at the same beat). Ive literally gone home because of his music several times because I couldnt stand it. I like to dance, so good music is a necessity for me. I truly hope that Sun Trapp will hire a better DJ in his place.
The best place of its kind in Salt Lake, though having areas without the loud music would be helpful. The guy at the door has always seemed happy to be there. Dartboards, pool, a small dance floor, and a front and back section that goes outside to a semi-wrap around patio area makes this one of the larger single floor gay bars.
Ok. I admit, I am a cis woman, queer, ally. I came here today because I needed to pass some time. The bartender Michael treated me like a queen. Let me tell you, there were some extremely fabulous Queens here on a Sat night. I could never compete in my wildest dreams. My friends and I felt so welcome, had so much fun. Also, the drinks were reasonably priced. Listen, there is no other place like this in slc. It has been years since I have been here, and I will be back soon. Best staff, best customers, fun welcoming dance floor. come early to avoid a long line.
My partner and I were just in town for the night, looking for a gay bar. We chose The Sun Trapp and could not have had a better time! The staff and patterns were so friendly and welcoming. It was like a giant house party. Those boozy mason jar cocktails were a perfect catalyst, too. Wed come back to SLC just for this bar alone.
The original owners Im assuming were forced out by a shareholder. The original staff thats as here all were fired. This is no longer a safe space for the queer community if salt lake city. Do I do not recommend nor support this business. Ive seen posts of the owner accusing a dj of theft of some dj gear that belonged to the DJ not the business.. shame on the new management at suntrapp! 👎👎👎
Great bartenders but its wrong and NOT INCLUSIVE to only allow in the vaccinated by requiring proof of vaccine. Huge disappointment that a community which claims to be open and welcoming clearly discriminates against so many of their own.... I wont be back for a long time because of this unnecessary and divisive move. Sad.
I think its the best bar with the best bartenders in Salt Lake. Bud light and all. Very chill. And best prices.
The place is outside of downtown. Very spacious. Staff was very nice. They have a pool table and outside area. We went on Wednesday night around 6pm. Not busy at all, maybe 10 people total at the bar.
So the trendiness of Trapp is here to stay and I guess I can deal. I love the dance floor and the cheap drinks but I want to call out the DJ for playing the same songs on his set list every single Friday. It’s been over a year and without fail we hear I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Me Too, Work It, just to name a few. Change it up 🙄🤦🏻♂️ He doesn’t even take requests.
I understand that things are a bit tense with COVID-19 restrictions right now, but I was just having a good time with my friends and I was told once by one server that I had to go back to my table when I was just casually dancing my way to the bathroom. Then later by another server it was my “final warning” when I was dancing from outside to my table. I was just moving from one place to another both times but apparently doing so while dancing was not acceptable. I ended up crying after being told twice that I couldn’t dance while just moving locations in here. This place was great before the pandemic but right now apparently being happy at the club isn’t ok. I hope things lighten up here soon.
Its a coin toss whether youre going to have the best night ever or wish you just stayed home.I vote you go and see for yourself.drinks are little more $ than other bars but nothing to break the bank. The crowd is hit or miss, they do TONS in the community so I always recommend supporting these guys!Live a little! buy that cute guy at the bar a drink.
I mean, describe my experience or...?I walked in, on a Wednesday - pre PRIDE weekend - and there was no one there but maybe two people. (Totally fine)No one on the Dance Floor... I asked, wheres the Dance Floor, jokingly, and the female bartender, the one with the braid, said its right there and no ones on it.... (Obviously) I said, cool, just like I like it!Then I ordered 3 shots, went to give her my card and she said its cash only. I pulled out all the cash I had ($5.25) and I said thats all I have, she grabbed my money, took back my shots, and said you can pay for the one your friend drank.I asked her wheres the sign that says cash only, only to notice that is right above her head.I then recommended she let her customers know before pouring the shots and she said, theres an ATM right there. If you cant pay for them, you shouldnt order them.Um.... Maybe next time you should tell your customers youre trying to rip the IRS off on PRIDE weekend by taking cash only (changing your usual business operation) PRIOR to them ordering and taking shots. Just saying, customer service. If you dont like it, get a new job!Usually my experience is great here. Ill assume she was having a tough day, but sheesh lady! CALM DOWN! My friend just lost his job and had a rough day, too and we just were looking for a good time. at a bar. weird.
I dont drink and have much fun at bars, but Sun Trapp is fun no matter if youre drunk, sober, gay, or straight. The people there make the bar experience what it is, and Sun Trapp has the best people around. Have fun!
My husband felt comfortable so, I tried to just blend in. Hahaha, likelihood of that at my local gay bar. All jokes aside, great mix of people with the atmosphere of love and acceptance, not to mention,..... we at the bar! Even though I feel out of place at times, thats my own head trip about being with a crossdresser. Dont worry yall, Ill get over me! No, now, seriously people, this bar has great clientele, music, video, pool, darts, cook-outs and cook--ins.
Through underhanded measures, this once gay bar has come under ownership by a straight, homophobic transphobe who is only interested in money and not the LGBTQ+ community. It is no longer a safe space.
This is one of my watering holes and I love it I spend a lot of time here the staff is amazing the drinks are delicious and on Monday nights they have karaoke so if youre looking for something to do I would definitely hit that up. Weekends can get crowded but thats okay if youre there before 10:30 11:00 the latest you should be able to get in with no problems
This is one of my favorite places. Tonight we came out to celebrate a birthday and now (even though it has not been required in th past) proof of vaccine is required. This requirement is NOT listed on your website or anywhere else I could find. Had we known this information, we would have been prepared. After looking forward to coming to Sun for weeks, we will now spend our money elsewhere. So disappointing
This place is so much fun! Everyone is pleasant and friendly. The staff is phenomenal and it’s very clean. Prices were very reasonable and there are 4 different bars with in this place. I would recommend this to everyone!
I pulled up and I thought this place is really small the minute I got through the door it was anything but small. Drinks were great. It was so much fun. Definitely recommend anyone and everyone to come here
Proof of vaccination is only an issue for irresponsible people. Get over yourself and get vaxxed. The real issue:Sun Trapp has always been the home of the lgbtq scene and now that is gone with the current owner. Dont support their discrimination/bias/bigotry.
A great place for all!The staff, owner, and all there treat everyone very well. Its always a comfortable and friendly experience. The outdoor space is huge! Plus, the billiards is a blast!
Absolutely love this place. Sun Trapp has such a welcoming and safe environment .
Visiting/Traveling. On my 1st night the bar tender was friendly and professional. The patrons were clique-ish and not so friendly. 2nd night the bar tender was rude and had a bad attitude. He got mad because I asked for a coffee drink and that he would have to make coffee, then when I tried to ask for a beer while the coffee brewed he mumbled something then walked away. Another bartender served me a beer which I didnt bother to finish. Ill take my patronage ($$$) down the road.
Thank you to Mike and the crew for quickly handling a dangerous situation involving a sexual perpetrator. The management of this club not only prioritize the experience of their inclusive space, but the safety of each club go-er as well. Im grateful for the affordable drinks, bumpin music, and friendly atmosphere. Thank you for always providing such authentic service!
I appreciate the merit of what I experienced this night. I know bar happening can be kinda crazy. This guy, God bless his soul, told me the only things I can control is my perspective and how I respond to situations, and his friend told me to go to the bus station to continue my journey which I made the bus just in time... this one guy bought a few shots and I want to thank him, I love you man.. Also Steve and the other guy.. I think his name tag has a g in it... very happy those place exists and Im even more thankful for the people. I love you guys and may God bless every one of your souls
The bartender should go to school to learn to make a margarita. She used the shaker and poured into 2 cups and then added MORE sweet and sour to top them off. They were horrible and gave us all heartburn..dont order margaritas from her! Shots were good though! LOL
This used to be my favorite bar, no cover, cheap drinks, dive bar feeling but now its just not the same. It feels more trendy and straight than it used to be. Recent changes have not been for the better. Whats next a cover? Try-Angles will have to do for now. (They have at least not forgotten who their customers are 🏳️🌈)
#naturalwine for us wino Fab Fags looking for an awesome time!! Been a regular for upwards of 20 yrs. The Jager Bombers & Mind Erasers!! Always something to eat it seems. The BBQs, & dancing, & socializing w/old & new friends. The owners/management are wonderful, and Im good friends w/almost all the staff, they have always treated me like Gold!!
Under new management with the original owners! The last owner was really awesome and he took safety very seriously. Thats all gone. Dont go to this bar. Its not friendly at all.
Had a blast, strong affordable drinks, great dance music, friendly hot crowd. Met the manager, Mike, super great guy and very professional. Definitely will be back soon.
First time Ive had to ask for a detailed receipt- bar tender didnt add in 3 drinks and instead added a $11 charge on gratuity to make up for it so it goes in her pocket - pretty shady to screw the owner like that but there shouldnt have been a mandatory gratuity for a party of 3.
The atmosphere is great but staff needs to really rethink what their procedures are. Its pretty sad how one girls definition of fun is acusing random goers of sexual harrasemt. The sadder part is that the staff doesnt even question her ,but those acused instead. Great way to let me know that my dollars are spent towards keeping unruly customers like her in and others out.
Really nice bar. Very friendly staff and customers, it was slow when we were there but still great. the layout is amazing and the porch out back is very nice and comfy. great job guys
Horrible experience the staff was extremely rude and inconsistent!! We ordered 4 drinks before last call we only received 3 of them and when we asked for the 4th the staff refused saying he already pored it when he didnt and then we had to fight to get the money back for the drink and he didnt give it back to us in full. I will not be partaking of their services again. I used to go all the time when it was just the trapp new management needs to get their f@:&ing s* together!
Went on a Monday night, they had a decent crowd and Karaoke. Drink prices were reasonable. More of a rustic saloon style decor.
Michael is the coolest he must be a god amongst men. He went way out of his way to find out about LP at the Metro Bar Next Door he didnt have to do that.... But he did and he called me back unexpectedly twice to fill me in.. Ohh baby it was good..Ive been around long enough to remember the Sun that got taken away bi a tornado. I guess Dorothy came home tapping those red shoes.
One of my favorite bars. They are very inclusive and the employees are always so nice and patient. I always have a blast when I go out to the Sun Trapp!
We went out on a Friday night. Had a blast wonderful time plenty of people to talk to and everyone was friendly. They do a auto gratuity after $50 on a tab. Just so you know.
Used to be cool until they became popular.I remember coming here for a lowkey evening after weeks of nonstop partying. It seems now they want to BE the party. In concept it works, in practice it’s a mess.1. Long wait to get in2. Long wait to buy a drink3. Top 40 musicI feel like they are trying to be a bar everybody likes, in the process being a bar nobody likes. These days I usually take one look at the line and book it to metro or art garden for better music.Considering they are in the heart of salt lakes nightlife corridor, they really need to find their niche, or risk being the next Jam/One80/Bricks in town.An example of a gay club that knows their niche would be SkyFall (EDM/Circuit Party) or Tryangles (Neighborhood Gay Bar). The Trapp wants to be everything but instead is attracting people who are insecure, naive, and dull. I don’t know how long they can keep this up. I miss the old suntrapp where boys were boys and men were men. You could drink all night and get some yay. Now it’s been ruined by the mainstreaming of Gay culture.
Worst bar I’ve ever been to in my life. I was profiled for the way I looked which was very uncomfortable considering it’s suppose to be an open-minded gay bar. Very disappointed in the staff and owner by how they handle their business. Disrespectful people who think they are superior.
There is a guy named Manny he is very rude with new customers, he feels like he owns that bar and it’s not polite at all, he kicked out my friends just for being dancing in the stairs
Awesome place with just the right amount of “hole in the wall” feel. Not pretentious at all. Super friendly crowd and staff!
This place is clearly being review-bombed. Note the new accounts all being made just to 1-star review this place. It’s weird, I don’t get why y’all are duking out this messiness in Google reviews. It makes your whole town look lame.
Its a fun place and insanely sexually charged. You have one too many drinks and you might wake up at an orgy the next morning. They have the best long Island tea so take one and coast through the night.
Omg I love coming here on a Friday or Saturday night. Okace is huge. Last time I went they had a dj with a dance floor two whole bars and one outside in a tent. Great place to have fun!
Favorite gay bar due to low or no cover fees, large drinks for a good price, and good music
Thank you for reopening this queer haven.
Super fun DJ. Great vibes. Bathroom line was pretty daunting, and it would be awesome if there was a coat check. But other than that its an awesome bar.
The DJ on Friday is on point... awesome layout btw... bar, dance floor, bar and then the outside arena... I say arena because of most gay bars, its what it bowels down to, lol .but totes two thumbs up... great bar for me as a newcomer to SLC GAY.
If you have legal medical marijuana, leave it at home. They will kick you out and ban you for 2 weeks. They dont care that its yours or that it was prescribed to you or that its a legal vape pen.
We had a great time stopping in, wonderful staff, nice atmosphere and very welcoming.
Service is horrible. Every time I try to give this bar another chance the bartenders remind me why I never like to go. Rude, and make drinks that are so weak I might as well be paying 8 dollars for a glass of juice.
The bartender Kyle upfront, is rude and unprofessional. Would recommend getting a drink from another. They are always nice and respectful.
Great little bar! Good vibe, great staff. Will definitely come back the next time I’m in SLC!
The bartender is nice but the guy at the door so NASTY. We were a group of 4 ppl and just cause my friend showed a Mexican ID he didn’t let him in and He looks like 40So bad for the owner
So excited for the reopening soon!!
Always a fun time and you can’t ask for better staff! - Update!!! Under new ownership this place just doesn’t feel the same, nothing against the new staff, but it’s not pre pandemic trapp. 🥹
Im literally at suntrap every Friday night - it’s lit the music is always so good the vibe is chill and the outside area is so much fun they have this unicorn that shoots out water and everyone is just dancing and having a lit time !
Wouldn’t accept my friends ID. we were in a group of 10 people all 22-25 and his wasn’t accepted for “multiple reasons”. They didn’t even scan it. Won’t be returning.
It kind of looks like a hut, and at six pm, it is a quite place with good music where you can sit and relax. There are a lot of bar games for people who are interested.
Great vibes and huge space to sprawl out over, the bathroom lines are always long but it makes sense when the drinks are so good.
The environment seemed nice of what I saw. Staff was nice. I was impressed by the way it looked, they did some updating and modernization to what I can imagine was there before. I definitely think it looks great.
Great crowd, lots of diversity in the patrons. I think they do a pretty good job on the weekends considering how many people come through there.
The suntrapp is indead a personable bar ! The perfect place to run into old freinds, but also to meet many new ones !I found the crowd to be versatile and freindly !if u get the chance, dont miss the oppertunity to visit !!!!!
I absolutely love this place! However, if youre a woman, dont plan on getting served before any man in line. We tip as well Suntrap!
The best and safest bar in salt lake. Everyone is always so nice and sweet. Drinks are awesome and the atmosphere is amazing.
Not a good time. Play more music from queer artists maybe? The bartenders are great tho! Love y’all!
I have had a lot of fun here. Unfortunately the staff are very racist, and very transphobic. Ive had four bad experiences with three separate staff.
Turned away at 1 am, okay?
Always a good time. The music is great and the vibe is upbeat. The bartenders are awesome and really sweet.
The place is small, but it is super fun. I love how friendly the staff are. Honestly met the nicest people here
The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. They have many activities to pass time
I love the vibe here! So much fun and the people that go here are so friendly and welcoming and you just feel like everyone is your best friend 💓
TEMPORARILY CLOSED I can’t believe they would do this the week after “yes, and?” released:(
Unfortunately 0 stars is not an option. But steer clear of this place. Under new management lacking the same values and ideals as the previous owners! Stay away.
Awesome local gay bar with friendly staff. Jabe makes the best drinks! Dart tournaments on Friday as well.
Great little bar! Cheap PBR and great LIT specials! Logan is an awesome bartender!
My second experience here I absolutely loved it I had a great time. Other than they need more bartenders because theres not enough
It was open during the holidays and the drinks were great! The music wasnt bad either. Great staff and convenient location
Great atmosphere! But submitting for the man on vaccinations? Not as free spirited of a place that was lead on. Disappointed.
Boring and loud. Never tried bars until here and it felt like a waste of time.
This place was once our go-to, however, in light of their recent success, they have made changes to some of the things that made it so great. The wait to get in just doesnt justify the experience.
Just got back from having a beer. Saw a lot of familiar faces. Talk to people I have not seen in a while do to closure. Great time.👬👍
Jane was very disrespectful and very passive aggressive with my friend before entering the bar. she was demanding an open tab before entrance as well. Wait time was 45mins before we got to the entrance. Very disappointed‼️
It used to be a great safe place to come for fun. But not the owners are just abhorrent and disgusting.
Wonderful bar! Super nice staff and wonderful DJ. Best place to go for dancing and forgetting you have problems at all 😍
The most welcoming spot. And the least amount of creepy dudes. 🙃
It is so much fun to be there the drinks are great the music is fun and the people are all nice and kind great environment
Got all the way up there and didnt know you needed proof of vaccination. The only club up there that is doing this though, so go elsewhere!!
Casual place to relax and enjoy friends. Right mix of indoors seating, music, outside patio, bar games, and great bartenders.
Come here for the dance floor and the DJs! Great patio, too.
Queer dive bar, huge space with pool and darts, gender inclusive restrooms
This place is awesome. The bartenders are great. The drinks have great prices. And Karaoke!!!
I had a great time and I appreciate the metal detector before being allowed in
Says they close at 2 but actually 1am. Staff is short with customers unless you are a regular. Not a friendly place for visitors. I will not be back to this place!
Oh Mr. Walton its not nice to hear you saying mother f.... To people coming here to spend money so you can get a salary. Being nice is not that hard, just try.
I love that this bar is so inclusive to everyone. Honestly has been one of my most favorite bars.
Love coming here. The socializing and dancing is a good time
Excellent service good music always friendly people
Fun place to dance and drinks are OK they taste like juice most of the time though
Love hanging out with the bartenders especially Randy he has always been the best taken great care of the females in this bar
Great place, love the environment, usually very crowded on Fridays and Saturdays, not so much on other weekdays.
Great bar , inexpensive drinks, my only complaint is that theres not enough a/c
This place is a joke!!! If you dont mind a shady place with unprofessional service this is the bar for you but if you want somewhere that has class and good employees go elsewhere!!!
The music was pretty good. We hade fun. The drinks were weak, but thats Ut.
Ever since the management switched, Trapp has some weird vibes! Doesn’t have the energy that it used to, unfortunately.
Ever since they’ve started their discrimination, I use a flask to bring in alcohol. They won’t be getting my money anymore ;)
The bestest and funnest bar. Oh ya it is a gay bar. Servers and bartenders are amazing. Go have fun.
Love the music, the staff, and the patrons. I always feel welcome and have a great time!
Sketchy bar, not safe at all. People are getting drugged here. Stay away.
Very nice people. Lots of games and the service is great. They make you feel right at home
Not enough chairs
Had a great time during ULP, great space and as another reviewer commented, many tasty men ;)
Really an awesome place!! As genuine and fun as a bar could possibly be!
Cleanest bathrooms in salt lake City thats a good thing..... Great vibe perfect place for anyone.
Always a good time! Its the ONLY spot to be! Jason is the cutest! Lil sexy hippie
Best bagel bites and jalapeño poppers in the state!! Trapper is awesome.
Best place to go with amazing people! Best vibe very! Come and meet amazing people and fell welcomed!
Decent bar for those of an alternative lifestyle. Offering shows and special events quite often.
The bartender was friendly and really friendly to me and my fellow gays. ^-^
Im straight and this bar is awesome! Such a different vibe and I love it.
The owner is super friendly, good prices, amazing vibrations. I had the coolest time.
