Uptown Tavern

We stopped by during the PRIDE Parade with 13 friends and they accommodated us, even with our very large group (originally was supposed to be 8 of us). PRIDE is the busiest day of the year and the staff was holding it down well with their friendly and quick service, even during all that chaos. My Moscow mule was so tasty but my chicken avocado salad I ordered was absolutely amazing! My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and let me tell you, Popeyes has nothing on Uptowns version (my terrible pic i attached does not do it any justice). Ill be trying that next time I come. Great job guys!

Had never been here in all of our visits to San Diego. It was a spur of the moment decision to stop in. Loved the vibe and our servers were amazing. We went back several times during our stay. Definitely recommend as a great place to start your night or spend a Sunday brunch morning.

Chad and Jessica run an awesome tavern with fresh, quality food and drinks. The Mac and cheese were superb and addicting as well as the chicken and waffles were to die for. Thanks for such a great meal and service!!!

Service can sometimes be a little slow but the servers are definitely keeping busy and giving their full attention to the table theyre working with. When its crowded it seems they just get a little bogged down with the sheer number of people and orders. Food is fantastic (definitely some of the best chicken strips in town) and the staff is wonderful.

Food is great, I would recommend the tavern sliders on Hawaiian bread, cooked and seasoned to perfection. Add maple syrup to your dip choices and thank me later. Service is ok, they love their regulars and pay extra attention to them. I came alone and bartender switched out without telling me, leading for me to fend for myself to closeout. Atmosphere nice outside by the fire.

Bottom line:Extensive cocktail menu, small bites to share, as well as a full dinner menu, and indoor-outdoor setting make a great happy hour spot. Dog-friendly patio. Brunch seems to be a major attraction, as well.Details:We missed lunch after a long day at the zoo, so popped in at Uptown Tavern for an early happy hour and bites to eat. We had the Sutter Smash (delicious), and the Xocoveza from Stone Brewing. Our food took a little while, but we had fun people watching and nursing our drinks. The veggie sliders (beet patties with goat cheese) and fries were excellent, and Id definitely order again. The 5-spice wings were a bit of a miss for me. I was hoping theyd be more spice-forward, but the Mister thought they were fine. Weirdly, they were served with pickled ginger, which didnt compliment the flavor, but it was easily picked off. Id stick to the traditional buffalo wings. The rest of the menu looked promising, but we didnt want to spoil our dinner reservations for later in the night. Note that street parking is very limited, so allow for time to circle around if youre meeting friends. Overall, worth a visit if youre in the neighborhood!

Uptown Tavern offers a fun environment with great drinks, friendly staff and tasty FRESH food! If you order an appetizer I recommend the hummus! It’s homemade and so good, but be sure you like Garlic! I’d also recommend the sliders because with the combination of the perfectly cooked charbroiled patty, cheddar and sweet bun, it’s really hits the spot! And I’m not one for heavy food, I generally eat healthy but the chicken and waffles are worth giving in for! I know it sounds strange... but give this a try! You won’t go wrong! If your less adventurous try the perfectly battered chicken tenders, you can tell they weren’t frozen!

Came in for brunch on a Saturday around noon. Was not super busy, so it was easy to get a seat at the bar. So glad we did! Mulan the bartender was warm and personable and full of great energy. She made us a few tasty cocktails and got our weekend started. Then the food came out! I had the fried chicken and biscuits. They were divine! The chicken was juicy and tender and the biscuits were great. The bacon scramble was also delicious. Thanks for a great meal!

I had the misfortune of visiting UpTown Tavern recently, and my experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The establishment prides itself on its ambiance and service, but my visit left a bitter taste in my mouth.First and foremost, the female bouncer that everyone complains about was not only rude but also physically aggressive. Her behavior was completely uncalled for and unacceptable. No customer should ever have to endure such treatment when simply trying to enter a bar.Overall, my experience at UpTown Tavern was nothing short of a disaster. I will never be returning, and I strongly advise others to steer clear of this establishment. Its clear that they have a long way to go in terms of improving their customer service and overall atmosphere. It seems as if the owner supports this type of behavior and doesnt understand the liability hes assuming due to the actions of his staff.

Love the food. Love the service. The waiting staff is always wonderful. Food is fresh and consistently good. Only complaint is the music is often too loud to have a conversation without yelling across the tables. It can be expected at 10 pm but not what I want for brunch on Sunday morning.

Loud and fun! Great drinks and some very good food.We got the chicken sandwich, the sliders and the taco fries. All of it was very well prepped and delivered promptly. Be nice to your servers will get your far in every kind of place, so dont be grumpy or mean.

Great beers, bartenders, food, and atmosphere. Love it here. My Wife goes wild for the parmesan fries, pretty good if i do say so. The wooden board presentation is fantastic. Bitter Bros hazy is so good!

I love it here! Uptown Tavern is one of my favorite restaurant bars in Hillcrest. The food and drinks are always spot on, and the servers/bartenders are all on top of their A-game when it comes to providing good, quality service. I highly recommend Uptown Tavern to any locals or visitors in the area.

Was invited to this bar for a birthday party and was having a great time, the service was good. However the bouncer became violent and grabbed two of our guests for taking pictures. Will NOT be coming back here ever again. The owner was extremely rude and does not know how to handle his staff.

Was physically assaulted by the female bouncer Ana. She did not have any grounds to put her hands on me, there was no violence needed. She aggressively handled me and I tried to get her off and she instead on kicking me out saying by law I can kick you out I asked her for what and no answer. She pushed me towards the fire pit and burned my hair. We were taking pictures with a light and she grabbed the drink I had just ordered (second drink) off my hand and grabbed my arm and told me Im done. I dont even get to finish my food. All this because she was nosy in our conversation and didnt like us taking pictures. Please review all the footage from this incident, no one was violent and we were just trying to have a good time at a birthday. The bouncer seems like she was on something. We will be taking our business elsewhere in the future. She was on a power trip , the moment we walked in she gave me and our group dirty looks making everyone uncomfortable. Ive never been to a bar where they dog you to get in. Was standing next to our group listening to our conversations instead of standing in her position. The owner then took her side, not listening to our side. They clearly have something together to defend her even in the wrong. She was laughing that she was getting away with her actions. Saying your ego When I stood up for myself. More than welcome to look at the footage you got so many witnesses who see the wrong in her actions. Let alone they still charged me for the drink and food I never consumed. Also broke my nail ( burned my hair ) . Thats how aggressive she was for no reason.

Worst experience ever. Theyre employees are not communicating with each other. One employee told us to sit at a table and then security came and kicked our group out. Most embarrassing thing ever. We have never experienced this before. First time at this place and last time.

Yummy food! Friendly staff. Delicious drinks. Good music. Right next to a nail salon. Fabulous place to eat before or after getting your nails done. Both dishes I ordered were amazing. Thank you!! Will be coming back!

Huuuuge portions. The chicken & waffles absolutely slaps. As does the Avocado toast, it has some elote on it that is divine. Did I mention the huge portions bc wow, it’s like I’m dining in Texas again. Definitely recommend!

Always fun! Drop in for easy brunch options, lunch and dinner fares. The drinks are wonderful and if you have any issues picking options, the staff knows what theyre doing and will go out of their way to help.

Love this place love the owners love the people that work there from security to host stands theyre all so nice this is definitely the place you want to go to the have fun be with your friends and enjoy your time. And my dog thinks theyre cool and the food is delicious thats all that matters

Uptown Tavern is a nice place located in Hillcrest. My favorite on their menu is the chicken and waffles. Marquis is their fry cook and he wont disappoint you when it comes to the chicken and waffles. Another fav is the breakfast bae burger. Randy, my waiter was pleasantly handsome and nice. Good food and handsome people to look at.

I came across their Instagram ad about bottomless pasta Tuesday and definitely had to go!The pastas were great, and the shrimp and steak as well.I do prepare this kind of meal often and would like to see less spices on the shrimp and steak. It kinda overpower the pasta sauce and takes away from the meat taste.

I really enjoyed the food here. They were very accommodating with our large party (18 people). Friendly service, great food, nice atmosphere.

This was a fantastic place to get food and drinks. I had the fries, sliders and short rib. Everything was delicious. The unicorn mule was a true delight of berry and light brisk flavors. Highly recommend if you like mules.

Tasty and pricey food, chicken strips took about an hour to get to us, drinks are more expensive than other local spots and seem to have half the booze.

I came with my two friends to Uptown Tavern and had an amazing experience! Brandon was our waiter, he made sure we always had full drinks and snacks/ was just the overall best server! The other servers were also making sure we had what we needed their staff is just so sweet and attentive. We also got the tavern sliders, they were so good and well seasoned with a perfect pink center. 10/10 would come back! Great music and fun atmosphere

We like stopping at this place when we roll thru Hillcrest. The food is great, especially the hummus and also the veggie sliders. The cocktails flavors mix well.

Absolutely DELICIOUS! The chefs cooking is immaculate. We recommend the tavern sliders and the tavern Mac and cheese 🧀 We showed up on a cold night and the fire outside is a nice vibe. Drinks, service, music, and vibe was great BUT the food was sub par. The eggs had no flavor, the gravy was sweet with too much flour, and the chicken and waffles was disappointing.The waffle was floppy and tasted old, and the chicken had 3x more batter than meat.I might be back for drinks and a hang, but definitely not for food.

Good food and drinks with lively, fun atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the outdoor dinning area is very flimsy and you feel every bump and wobble from people walking by or moving around. So maybe opt for a seat inside or at the bar. Other than that, we had a great time and enjoyed everything we ordered. It is usually less packed here than next door at Gossip Grill or down the street at Mos, which is definitely a plus. The prices are what you would expect for Hillcrest.

Cool place to hang out with friends. It’s okay to be loud or just kick back. The food was okay, but no appetizer menu, unless I missed something. The service was fine.

I joined a friends table during peak times on Saturday during festival time and was blown away how great the chicken fingers were . Brought my hometown friends the following day and we all had awesome service from the hostesses to the patio server . Food was on point . Cubano FTW! I only write reviews when I’m blown away …. So well done . I’ll be back.

Instead of reading this review, you need to be driving, walking or literally running to Uptown Tavern for brunch. We were in town visiting family, and went here on a recommendation. I am a very critical reviewer of restaurants, and this place completely blew me away. The food is simply amazing. Spicy southwestern chicken and biscuits could quite possibly be the best meal I have ever eaten. The second our food hit the table, my fiance and I took one bite, and then proceeded to stuff our faces silently. Aside from the food, the restaurant itself is upbeat, fun and fantastic for people watching on the patio. Yes, the service is a bit slow, but honestly there is no reason at all to rush out of this place. Considering the food tastes like home cooked southern soul food, it is well worth the wait. Have a couple mimosas, and enjoy the day. You wont be disappointed.

We love this place!! Every year we come for my husbands birthday. He loves their Buffalo Mac n Cheese. I love their Chicken n Waffles. Its comfort food but amped up a few notches. The service is always great. Never disappointed when we leave.

Walked in got to the bar sat down and about to order a drink. then the security came and told us to not reach in other peoples jackets. how rude. and I was the only Asian person at this bar. people go here for drinks why would anyone do that. the whole bar but you only walked up and told me 🧐

Loved this place! Our server was attentive and sweet. The food was good, they have delish (in house) hummus. The lighting gives the place a relaxed vibe and they have cafe seating so you can people watch. Well definitely return.

Awesome place! Came here to hang out and have brunch on the patio with a group of friends during the pride parade and we had a BLAST. The servers were amazing despite the huge crowd and everything going on, he kept a mimosa in my hand at all times as promised it was wonderful time. Later we hung out on the back patio with some new friends and had some quick bites to eat, food was pretty good, Ill def come back again.

I signed the receipt for the drinks as no tip. I wait until the last round to give a large cash tip but before I could, the receipt was laughed at, balled up and threw at me. Next drink had no alcohol. I explained with cash in hand and the bartender played it off. Female bartender.

I have been here a few times. And had an enjoyable ecpe experience each time. The food and drinks are very good. The brunch menu is great. Delicious food! Fun vibe and lively crowd. Great for brunch. Mimosa bar with lots of options. Be patient with service - they are friendly but you may wait for a few extra minutes or have to ask for silverware.

Customer service was excellent. The staff was very kind and generous. Servers was attentive to customer needs and accommodating as well. I have the sliders and the chicken wings I must say the sliders are the half the size of a hamburger. And the chicken wings are very flavorful

The staff was very friendly and the ambience was great! They were able to seat a 14 person party almost immediately which we really appreciated. I ordered the brunch option of waffles and fried chicken but the chicken did not meet my expectations. First off, the fried chicken was greasy, and they did not have anything added to level that. Also, the amount of maple syrup was not what I expected, it was lacking and felt more like a McDonalds portions than those I should of expected from a $17 dish. If we had more of it, that may have helped overcome the greasiness. I would still return, though. One dish does not make or break the experience for me. I also tried their Brussel sprout shareable plate and that definately was also a great option (may have used some help from parmessan cheese to overcome to slight oil overuse IMHO). Expect me to come again to try what looked like great drinks and other dining options!

Unpretentious gay bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Visited many times and staff are always friendly, including security on the door. Good array of drinks and really superb cocktails.

Bartenders were great, good beers on tap, food is pretty good bar food but I take it people dont go there just to eat. I guess they have specials and brunch and all that fun stuff. LGBT friendly.

Went for brunch with a group and maybe just at the wrong time. Staff is great but food and drinks were subpar. Batter on chicken is more along the lines of corndog batter and didnt pair well although the chicken itself was well seasoned, the flavor of the batter threw it. Four out of six had to send food back to the kitchen because it was cold. Three of us didnt finish just because of taste. Drinks were okay. Waitress was amazing though given her section.

The experience began with a long walk in brisk air, but became an adventure when we entered the dimly lit restaurant with tables of fire decorating. We tried everything on the happy hour menu as we were unable to decide between dishes. We tried multiple wines. The entire staff was friendly and concerned with our welfare, often checking if we needed another dish, or a dish removed, or a fresh drink. In finding the second set of bathrooms, I walked through an enchanting back room. I would love to return and spend time in that room!

Super good pricing of half off for cocktails during Happy Hour, genuine drinks with added enhancements like lavender, mint, and other fruits. The Sunday Brunch features a Champagne table to add any flavor or fruit imaginable! Jared gives amazing service and great bartender as well!

One of the best places in Hillcrest. Jessica (manager) and her staff are amazing. From the first time I went in there, I was never treated as a customer, but as a long lost friend. Jimmy is the head chef and he has to be the most talented chef in San Diego. Mondays all you can eat Pasta is a foodies paradise. You have to go! His Sunday brunches make me miss my mothers cooking. Even you arent a bar person; you need to check this place out! Even you want the best cocktails in town, have Josh make them. The man is a genius when it comes to drinks! And I cant forget the hostess with the mostest...Maddy. She is sheer entertainment!The only reason I didnt give them 5 stars was because of one of the managers. I wont name him, but, in my personal opinion and interactions with him has to be the rudest, most unfriendly and ageist person I have ever encountered.

Went there for the $1 burgers with beer. Why should a $1 be any good, how could it? Id rather pay full price and get the real deal. One beer was weird, 3 people at the table had it exchanged without a question.Good service, nice people

The bowl I had was tasty, but with mostly very chewy pieces of chicken it was mediocre. And I thought it was illegal for gay bars in Hillcrest to gouge us on well drinks! $10 or $11?! For call maybe, but not well. No thanks. And social distancing wasnt great, and no barriers between tables. Would rather support businesses that seem to try harder in these difficult times.

Bottomless tots? Yes please! Happy hour all day Tuesday? No way! I canNOT believe that I didnt know about this place before. I spent days looking into a venue for a small birthday party. Then I came across this gem! We had a party of 10 people sitting at the long table outside the patio. I made the reservation THE DAY OF. There were plenty of chairs and standing room. A few of us just mingled around and chatted. Neither my glass or my tots basket was ever empty at any given time. No loud music( I love it!) The service was superb! The food was delicious!! Get the wings! Get the flat bread! Get the tots! Get the salad! Get the brussel sprouts! Get the arugula salad! Get them all! Come here everyday! What are you waiting for???!!!!

This establishment is the reason gays have a bad reputation. My friend slipped out of the bar stool (not even drunk) and they kicked all of our party out. The manger is rude. I wouldn’t recommend eating or drinking here. Never coming back. Not worth my time.

Great wings and fun atmosphere

Food so good not a single thing was required to enhance it (salt, ketchup, dressing). Ordered the Chicken and Waffles (holy cow) the Mac n cheese (mind-blowing), and the Bread Pudding (dreamy), and the bill didn’t cripple my bank account.

QR code are so pandemic ! Please have papare menus for food and drinks. Also , it’d be nice trying to get to know your frequent customers .

Drinks are quite strong, definitely would recommend as the pricing is very affordable. The food portions are relatively large, would definitely recommend.Before COVID19, this restaurant did have a very good night life and a relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Amazing drinks, great atmosphere, friendly bartenders. I could keep going on but Im pretty sure I probably hooked you with amazing drinks. Ask for a Blueberry Basil mule, its not on the menu and its wonderful.

OMG Uptown Tavern is one of my favorite places in San Diego. I moved to SD this past January and I think I have gone there every week since I got here. The food and drinks are great and the service is awesome. FYI the Brussel Sprouts are to die for 😉

Great spot for either brunch, lunch, dinner, or anything in between. They have solid mimosa/champagne prices for brunch and great cocktails for dinner. You cant go with their fried chicken!

Favorite Hillcrest bar for me . Hip mixed crowd and great every night, but busy Friday and Saturday. I recommend if you want less of a scene , less drugs, less attitude, and possibility of conversation with new or old friends. Flicks is too young for me and Richs has become way too trashy .

Crazy crowded Saturday night. Fun diverse crowd dancing with headphones to their own music was fun to watch. A wedding reception in the back patio. Will have to plan to go again next Saturday.

First experience here, I had high hopes. Cocktails were virgins, tacos were very small.An IPA and a vodka water...couldnt taste the vodka...a single with a two dollar tip: $17.623 shrimp tacos very small with one shrimp each.... and a 1 dollar tip $13.93.The service was not great. Had to ask for napkins and Cholula.I do not recommend this place.I dont want to mention names, but down the road....the 4 dollar tacos are big big. And the 9 dollar cocktails are strong strong....Ok the place is Libertad. Same prices but portion are much larger here and definitely more tasty....Libertads whole charity angle is such a scam though....btw.

My favorite place for happy hour and after hours. Great staff from barbacks to mgrs.No I dont work here but been to enough places like this and Im a happy camper. Oh the food is decent also. Mixed crowd and no attitude. Try it. Youll like it.

Ordered the Drunken Shrimp.......Uhm......So wheres the shrimp? $14 for basically a fruit cocktail. 70% mango, 20% pomegranate, 10% shrimp. The shrimp was diced about the size of the pomegranate seeds. (No mention of pomegranate in the menu description - btw.)Good flavors overall and nice tortilla chips (though not enough of them) but this is chips and salsa. Should be $6 tops.

Taking up the entire sidewalk in front of your business is not legal the pandemic is over you’re taking up space your place is not licensed for your taking a public sidewalk space and the city should get involved and remove this offcourse you’re gonna use the pandemic as an excuse to abuse a solution that was made available to you temporarily

Try those 5 spice wings! I go solo and sit at the bar and have a beer and wings with fries. I like the design and theres always some good eye candy. Its centrally located. Funny, its located in Hillcrest a fair distance from Urban Mos and west of Inside Out. And honestly the vibe, design and food is exactly the same. Its closer to Inside Out than it is to Urban Mos. If you wished Mos was a bit more tasteful Uptown is your place. Enjoy! Its been there for a few years and that is saying something in San Diegos Hillcrest where we see too many restaurants pop up and fizzle out.

This used to be the absolute best place for a beverage and dinner in town on any night. Seriously. As of December 1st no more Curry Tots, Ghost Pepper Chicken Sandwich, or Buffalo Mac n Cheese.....what are you thinking? Seriously the best dishes you had going....

Great location, with an excellent range of beers and food. Friendly staff help a lot. If your from out of town this is a good place to start off your trip in the Hillcrest area.

Best service and the vegetarian sliders were AMAZING and so were the fancy french fries rosemary parmesan i think. Delish! Bonus they play great dance music.

Uptown at its best! Great food, even better drinks and hot bartenders! The green machine flatbread is amazing (add chicken though) and the mac and cheese du jour has never disappointed. There is a back patio area that is nice for bigger groups. Definitely a good happy hour spot

Lively place to meet with old friends or make new ones. Sometimes it can be a bit loud, other times its silent disco. Lol. Everytime I have been, its packed... so be patient when ordering a drink at the bar.

Great happy hour deals, and the brussels sprouts are fantastic :) We also came here to watch the HRC townhall and it was packed, but they handled it with class. Will definitely return :)

Totally get the chicken sandwich with tomato, and make sure you get some sort of sauce as well I recommend either Ranch, BBQ, hot sauce, or ask your waiter for something nice. Oh and make sure you try the vanilla coffee

The service is terrible,when I asked my waiter for the manager he said he was the manager. He left a bottle of champagne on my table after I ordered it then walked away without serving it into my glass. Never said hello never said his name or made my company and I feel welcome. Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Bacon tossed with roasted garlic vinaigrette, chili flakes, and topped with parmesan reggiano. This dish had a really strong aroma of garlic, Brussels sprouts, and bacon. Is there any thing better! The vinaigrette was perfect, added just enough liquid goodness while keeping the outer leaves of the Brussels sprouts crispy. The chili flakes added a touch of heat. A little more parmesan would have been nice as it got lost and would have added a great flavor addition. Thumbs up, way up!Pork Belly Sliders are topped with housemade BBQ sauce, house pickles and garlic aioli. These are absolutely fantastic! You’ll definitely have an OMG moment or two! The pork belly is super-tender and just melts in your mouth. The housemade pickles were fantastic as well! I am not a pickle person but I definitely gobbled these up and they added a nice flavor to the pork belly – similar flavor as a small Persian pickle. The garlic aioli and sweet bread helped round out the package. Thumbs up, way up!Grilled Salmon with rosemary & lemon-honey glaze served with market vegetables. Wow, the caramelized glaze added an Asian flavor profile to the fish, like a misoyaki glaze you would get at a Japanese restaurant. The fillet was grilled to perfection, succulent and buttery inside. The vegetables were sautéed perfectly with fresh green flavor still intact. Thumbs up, way up!Pistachio Bread Pudding is egg bread based with salted caramel and topped with vanilla ice cream. This is really good bread pudding, very custardy. The pistachios added a nice crunch texture, but the star of this dish is the salted caramel sauce. It wasn’t too salty; just right and will remind you of toffee, in liquid form. It had the perfect viscosity, not too thick and not too thin. Thumbs up, way up!

I love the road side seating that they have going on right now. It feels like you are sitting on an actual patio that is part of the restaurant not built over several parking spaces.

Drinks are slightly meh to alright but still overpriced. Service is amicable even when busy, but bar is not wiped down regularly. Sticky bar in a place thats not suppose to be a dive bar == gross.

Nice bar. Prices were a little high but a nice experience overall. Just be mindful on what part of town the bar is in and come with an open mind.

Staff is helpful and attentive. We rented out the back room for a reading and they were very accomodating with the sound system and lighting etc.
