I like coming here especially on Saturdays. I feel really safe and accepted here. Bartenders are great and security as well. Entertainment is also fun and exciting. Its like the rail I knew in 1991,1992
The absolute best for drinks and fun. Told them.what happened at the loft. We got quite an earful. Had a great time being around people who can have funTy . Brandon
A modern, airy bar. The bartenders are very friendly, and the bar seems to have several ongoing events. I typically go in the later afternoon so the vibe is a little more chill but I know it also gets very busy at night, more of a club. So there’s something for everyone.
Went with my friends from out of town. Arrived at 930. They had an event with a cover . Okay. The guys who said they were running the event were too busy touch feeling my friend. I mentioned it and was told its part of being gay Gurl friends. ???....The drinks were good and delicious. When we left we were greeted with a big thank you from a thin average security person ? In a black jacket.Drinks and friendly bar and security staff. But tell the event people that touching a person down there is disrespectful.
Came here on a Saturday night with a group from out of town for drinks and dancing. The staff were friendly, and the whole space/vibe felt welcoming.
The bartender Big Mike is such a wonderful kind person. He was welcoming and graciously gave me a new drink after I spilled mine. Good place, support the inclusive spaces
Super fantastic happy hour, Great bartender
Stopped by during the day time for some day drinking with friends. Place was ok. Theyve remodeled and you definitely notice it right away. The day we visited was a Saturday afternoon. They had a drink and draw event going on. Made the place feel livelier. Overall it was a good place to stop by to cool down, hang with friends, and drink.
You can enjoy brunch and come back at night for some dancing .
Nice venue, good music. The 2 stars rating pertains mainly to the DILF event. The DILF San Diego Mens Private Jock/Underwear Party is no longer a Mens Private party, which is what was stated online. Women were allowed to enter the 1/29/23 party. The staff stated that was because they sell tickets at the door.
This past Saturday night my best friend and I ended the night at The Rail. It was my first time at this bar, and unfortunately is the only experience in Hillcrest with having an exceptionally negative interaction with a bartender. My friend and I were interacting with one of the dancers and went to the bar with him to grab a shot. I paid for the first round and he agreed to get the second round, so my friend asked the bartender for the second round as told us to wait for him to change and he’d be back. She goes to the dance floor a few feet away, and I stay at the bar for a few minutes. After those few minutes I approach the area she is (still very close to the bar). Suddenly this same bartender storms onto the dance floor, literally grabs my friends shoulder and tells her “Don’t you ever order drinks at my bar and not be here to pay for them!!!” Completely shocking to both of us how aggressive he was about it, and we head towards the bar. I calmly try to explain to him we were literally right there waiting for the dancer, and he said “I don’t care!! SHE ordered it!!” As stated before, the order was for 3 shots and upon approaching the bar there was only 1 shot poured. So this bartender thought it made sense to aggressively approach us over ONE single shot, not even getting the order correct. After going back and fourth and trying to understand why he’s so hostile and combative, we just paid for the one single tequila shot that he apparently slaved to make, and went back to the dance floor. The only reason we didn’t immediately leave is because my co workers were also there having a good time, and we didn’t want the night ruined. Eventually we went to a different bartender whom was absolutely amazing. Came to find out the extremely rude bartender was the MANAGER. It really makes you question a business that has the worst bartender as their manager. After befriending a few regulars on the patio, apparently the manager Ziggy has a history of being rude. The other bartender Stevie saved the night for me. He was very sweet.
Stopped by during the day to get a drink with my boyfriend and his service dog. When we went inside they told us that dogs had to be on the patio which is fine but we explained she is a service dog and they then kept insisting that she would need to stay on the patio and we explained that is against the ADA to the bartender. We then sat down inside with our dog where security was very rude in telling us we need to keep our dog on the floor or leave which is not possible due to the service she provides. We explained that to security and he continued to be condescending and told us move the dog or leave which is actually a violation of federal law. The dog was very well behaved, and not disruptive and calm and is hypoallergenic on top of that. We felt we were unjustly harassed and discriminated against due to needing a service dog for my boyfriend’s disability and they did not make any effort to be pleasant or listen. Strongly debating filing an ADA complaint to the department of justice due to these employees conduct being flagrantly illegal.
Great little bar with awesome burlesque shows
The small security dude approached me and my friend and said we had to leave. We were in a big group so we all left. We werent being disruptive nor anything and there was not a lot of people in the bar. It just seemed that we got kicked out for no reason.

It’s a great venue. Usually come on the last Saturday of the month. My only complaint is the bar. If my total is $19.50 and I hand you $40 I expect change. Otherwise you’d get a .50 cent tip. 2nd and last drink was 9.75 handed him $20 and got NO change back.
$5 cover. Definitely isnt worth it. The bartender charged us for 4 drinks when we only ordered 3. And when i pointed out her mistake she got all rude. Just had a beautiful remodel and has a nice dance floor.
A much better place since the remodel. Large space with seating against the walls and in an open side room. Unfortunately the staffs personality is not pleasant. Dead on the Manic Monday with lack of available seating. Even if you arrive early you are removed from seating without any advance notice.
Avoid at all costs. Rail security staff exemplify whats wrong with the gay community. Favoritism and bias. There are way better bars in hillcrest that will treat you well. Rail staff dont treat their patrons equally. They play favorites and are unethical. Please dont spend your dollars at a place that employs staff that dont understand how to treat their patrons with dignity. If you need a detailed story, read below. The security guard at Rail is perhaps the worst human being I have ever met. I was first in the stand by line over pride weekend on Friday. I was standing in the stand by line for 30 minutes. The security guard came up to me and had the audacity to ask mewhat are you waiting for sir? I replied I am in the line. I was actually first in the line . The security guard gave me some BS that the group behind me were waiting since 8 pm alluding to the fact that I need to leave the line. How come I am first in the line then? I saw the group behind me arrive after me. Earlier I actually saw the security guard talking to the group behind me promising to pull some strings to let them in faster. I felt humiliated. The security guard obviously knew them and was playing favorites. Shame on the Rail for hiring an unethical security guard. He should be fired. I will never do business with them again. The whole experience was just awful. I went to Richs and had a great time. At least they know how to treat their customers right. Rail earned an F.
Awesome bar, great brunch (21+ only, sorry youngns). Its usually pretty quiet during the day, but its a great hang out spot so I dont know why. Ask the bartender for games during the day :)
It would be 5 stars but the chairs are horrible I could see making this place my new hangout but it’s not comfortable to grab a chair at the bar.
I HIGHLY Do not recommend this place. They discriminated against people with disabilities. The management or leadership hasnt even taken accountability to respond to any messages or emails. Sad to run a business like this. No wonder they have bad reviews on Facebook, Google and YELP!! Hope this business does not survive and goes down!
When the girls and I dont feel like gettin hit on, this is THE place to go for us! We always have soooo much fun lettin loose and dancin the night away. It gets fairly crowded but everyone is always polite, entertaining and fun which all equals a fantastic time.Drinks arent as expensive as most clubs youd find in downtown or PB and the dress code isnt strict so you can come casual or come dressy. The dancefloor isnt too big but they do have ledges (for short gals like me) to dance, oOoh SUki!Parking sucks but what do you expect, its Hillcrest! Definitely worth your time in choosing this place to let loose, especially when youre out with the gals. But then again, its just my opinion..
Drinks are okay…. The djs are just not on it… if they see that no one is enjoying the music they should try something else…. Sad…. The rail is not what it used to be anymore… bring new pppl In please…. Very disappointed.
I love this bar. They always have mixed crowd with great, fun music. All the bartenders and bouncers are so friendly and kind as well!( especially Jason!! Wink wink!!)
Ive been going here since ive turned 21 almost every saturday. And ive always had a blast but latley latin night at brass has been nothing but edm music. I came hear to dance to selena cumbias zapatiado and more of this kind of music. If i wanted edm i would go yo richs. If the dj. Could fix this maybe i would start going more often again.
Absolutely my favorite bar in all of San Diego. Mondays and Saturdays are the busiest. See Keoni for your drinks. If a stiff drink if what you ask for, a stiff drink is what youre gonna get. Always a good time to be had here.
Stopped by on Friday. A stand up Comic was featured around 7pm.I know its been a minute since Ive been to The Rail...but this is still an LGBTQ space Im assuming. The comic was telling transphobic and homophobic story to open his act. Needless to say we immediately left. We were all quite disturbed that this was acceptable or tolerated at all. I am posting this to spread the word and I wont be returning to The Rail or promoting any part of their business.
Very clean and excellently friendly service but for a gay bar in a major city its lacking. Just came from the midswest and this place has some catching up todo.
Club can use better music and not worth paying cover. The past two weekends have been empty 👎🏻
Strong pours, cheap drinks, and kind staff! Great place to start your night!
This place is amazing. The new owners are the best and are going to keep making this place THE true #1 spot to be in Hillcrest. 🙂 🕺
New owners and doing it right. Great drinks and good times
Really classed this place up with the remodel. The beers are good and the patio has umbrellas with built in solar USB chargers, which is pretty cool.
Enjoy trivia night and live band karaoke with a group of friends look forward to returning soon for a win.PS The cheese dip is delicious.
Fun place to dance! Everyone is very friendly.
Too expensive of a cover usually, bartenders play favorites, small pricey drinks.
Beautiful bar that plays the latest music. The crowd is always beautifully diverse in everyway and ready to have a great time!
$10 cover, and expensive, non-generous pours, when you can go just up the street to other bars with better pours and no cover, this is my first time here and I wont be back
Super nice staff. Very friendly. Not the cheapest drinks but strong.
Alex, the security guard, said I was too “intoxicated” to go in. I was completely sober.
Fun bar! Great drink specials and amazing dance floor!!
I love it here and the people there have been great and i consider them family.
Tuesday trivia was awesome! Star Wars themed menu and all!
Great music! Delicious drinks! And great aymosphere!
Super fun place! Great staff!
Went to Dilfparty there. It was really expensive and was over very early.
Great place to meet up with friends to start your night on the town, the place however can get cramped for space
Bar dead. Rude cover guy. Tried to charge $10 for a dead lame bar at 1:07am. No thanks!
Awesome latin music and staff every Saturday
Nice place, but some foods are not good for me
They need to really offer the menu that is on their website
The best VIP service like always!
Fun bar to dance at
I got in and I’m only 19
Very rude workers when your alone !
Ok, nothing remarkable
Is this place open?
Fun Diego!!!
Great time
Latin nights on Saturdays are amazing...I just want to inform the DJ that Latin music is not only cumbias and disgusting Regueton...Pop in Spanish also exists ehhh...
Good atmosphere to dance and drink
