I am deeply disappointed with the experience I had at this bar recently. The waiter with a mustache was incredibly rude and disrespectful. I needed to take an important medication and was forced to leave the premises because I wasn’t allowed to do so inside. It is unacceptable for an establishment to treat its customers with such little respect and understanding, especially when it comes to health matters. I would not recommend this bar to anyone and definitely do not plan to return.
This attendant was extremely clogged with me, my husband and my friend. He was rude and didn’t even know how to make a simple drink. First I asked if he had any drinks with GIN and he asked me which one I wanted!! What do you mean? You are selling and need to present me with a menu. Then I said I didn’t accept a card, then just put gin in my glass with ice and charged me for a drink. A thick one, avoid him.
I see reviews but i figure it’s younger gays guys. Just remember these men took a lot of abuse to make it easy for us fledglings to enjoy the freedom we have. It’s a great bar!! just learn to read a crowd and you’ll have a great life.
Having read some of the reviews it really seems hit or miss on the welcome you receive.. I definitely got the miss.. Bar staff not welcoming or friendly.. Grunted that they dont take cards. Drinks were mediocre at best, more ice than anything else. Worth seeing for its part in history but could just take a pic and skip the attitude..
Been going to San Francisco for years and never walked in to this bar . This week past i finally got to experience this amazing happy and welcoming establishment. Felt very welcome and the drinks were absolutely amazing . The staff welcoming and engaging as well. I had champagne and a Espresso martini yummy and made with love .Thanks for being a great part of the community and I’ll definitely be back next month .Also one more note the collection of Nut crackers is absolutely Impressive it’s add such unique atmosphere to this already amazing bar
Bartender was incredibly rude, we felt very unwelcome. My partner and I asked about nonalcoholic drinks before we showed our IDs because we were trying to decide if there were enough options (we are both obviously over 21 but we don’t drink and just wanted to spend time at a historic queer venue). He just told us to leave because we didn’t show ID even though I was literally handing mine to him at this point. It felt completely unreasonable. Never had an issue asking for nonalcoholic options at a bar before, and definitely never been asked to leave for waiting like 15 seconds to show my ID.
Some of the rudest bar staff I’ve ever encountered. Judging from the comments, this is not a novel experience.I cannot imagine being so crass and unfriendly that so many people write such negative things about me on Google reviews… how tragic.
Nice place in my neighbourhood, that I have visited many times. Sad about the unreasonable bartender, wouldn’t let us in without US ID, we are Irish and don’t have that, even my 55 year old Dad that was clearly over 21.
Great service, prices, and ambience. Felt very welcomed by locals over our 2 week vacation period. Great views, comfortable setting, and friendly bar service x
Walking into this place, I immediately thought to look around for the Golden Girls to see if they were in. This bar is definitely very warm with a mix of vibrant and eclectic decor, a heavily carpeted and comfortable locals hangout. The only thing I see missing here is the wooden chairs with floral or patterned upholstery.Although Its not a large bar, its quaint, very full and requires a bit of maneuvering to get around. Although if youre lucky you may be able to score a table in the limited number of cheap seats in the 2nd floor loft. Its bar service here only, so plan your drinks accordingly. They do make a decent old fashioned! Cheers!!
This adorable neighborhood bar is cute and clean and smells like cookies (Hot Cookie is next door) and has a super friendly staff with a very LGBT friendly vibe. Not fussy, the cocktails, beer, and wine are reasonably priced but bring cash! The bartenders voted I looked like a cross between Julia Roberts and Posh Spice soooo of course I love them for life 🏳️🌈❤️
Came in with a cute white tunic and layered it with a leather jacket and got a complaint about not having pants on I felt slighted and uncomfortable and will be going to the lookout where Im called darling and people know the difference between a shirt and and a tunic.
Great bar where you can do people watching. Be aware that it’s a bit smelly inside because of the old carpet.
Fantastically fab bar. Bartenders and clientele are friendly and fun to chat with. Cash bar, they have an ATM so don’t fret. Love the Halloween decor and the overall vibe. Make sure to see this historic bar in the heart of Castro. Super friendly to all LGBTQ and allies.
What makes them so trashy and rude here? Do you only get treated like a human being if you’re middle-aged? How sad that such an iconic, historic institution has such disrespectful bartenders.
Very good - Shirley temple is about 4/10 though due to lack of cherry
Was excited to visit, but the mustached bartender quickly addressed that with his most unwelcoming demeanour.
Undoubtedly the worst service I’ve ever experienced. While visiting the amazing city of San Fran, two friends and I stopped in for cocktails on a Tuesday evening. We approached the bar where there were only a handful of other patrons and encountered the most rude bartender I’ve ever met. He just stared at us not a hello not a smile not a “what can I get you” I had to ask him how he was an for our drinks. At which he again just glared at us. Mind you we are three professional men, two of which worked behind a bar earlier in life and we are always courteous, patient, kind and tip well knowing tending bar can be thankless at times. Anyway, we left after one drink and I’ll never go back. Worst experience at a bar ever.
Twin Peaks is the go-to meeting place for most of my friends or myself. The staff are friendly and the drinks are well-made. The large glass windows make it fun to watch people as you wait. This pub is one of the few in the Castro that doesnt play music so obnoxiously loud that you cant even carry on a conversation.
Always welcoming and friendly faces. Spiros makes a perfect martini.
Cool bar to hang out with friends and try a few drinks in Castro. The bar is old, and it has historical value! Definitely, a place to stop when visiting the area, along with so many other gay bars in this tourist region of the city. It’s right across the street after the BART station!
The waiter was very rude, and we felt very uncomfortable. The way he spoke to us and explain that he was the only one in charge of serving all tables is not our problem. We went there to relax and have fun but as soon as we could we just walked away.
We were clearly not welcome here from the snarky look on the barmans face when we walked in to his then refusal to serve us.He wouldnt accept my Australian licence or serve us without my passport.I am 37. While flattered, my face isnt youthful enough to disguise that I remember Y2K and Nikki Webster. That didnt matter, he said. But at what point would it not matter?
The reason to go here is for the history and strong drinks. It’s not the fanciest, or even the cleanest, bar ever, and the bartenders vary between fun and indifferent. It’s mostly populated by tourists and older neighborhood holdouts who cling to this remaining faded wedge of old Castro.
The vibe of this bar is much more laid back and casual than a lot of the other Castro bars. It tends to be quieter (the music isnt as loud), which is helpful if youre just trying to catch up with people. Its also a great place to people watch. The large windows make it easy to see people coming and going near the main intersection. The bartenders are nice, the drinks are strong. Recommended.
I love this place! Friendly staff and always good cocktails. Especially their Irish coffee drinks. The perfect anecdote for a breezy, chilly San Francisco day. Its also a historical landmark! No food served, or table service , but that doesnt detract from the wonderful atmosphere. A home away from home! ❤❤❤
What can I say? It is a charming place. I already liked it from the neon sign outside. The bartenders are always friendly, the drinks are not too pricey and strong, and the atmosphere is perfect. PLUS I misplaced an African scarf there, and they saved it for me. Lovely people!
I went to have drinks with my husband a random weekday and we had a blast. Service is very friendly and the tables set on the street are nice and great to enjoy seen and be seen. It is a great spots to enjoy all the great craziness of the Castro and to spontaneously meet your friends.
Amazing! Love this place, awesome & fun energy. Super friendly people and bartenders. The drinks are pretty cheap, and the seating is great. Theres a small upstairs which is super cozy (great if you want to read a book or people watch from above). Theres also a row of window seats on the floor level which provides more amazing people watching outwards to the streets of Castro. The bartenders have always been so friendly and helpful.Everyone Ive ever met in here has been so friendly, energetic, and kind. I like the vibe in here, a lot, and the location is great.
A popular destination for a lot of my friends, including straight men. The place is super-comfortable, with private tables upstairs and a great patio. There’s no blaring recorded music, so people get to talk with each other and become acquainted.
Walked in for a quick drink. Very historical and stylish place. Great crowd. The drinks here are very…innovatively named, like the 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die. Also a full menu of coffee liquors. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in town or the neighborhood!
The least pleasant experience I’ve had in a bar or pub in decades. The bartender was aggressively uninterested in the customers. Twin Peaks is a profoundly disappointing gateway to a historically significant neighborhood.
This was the first bar I have been to since being 21, and the bartender was very helpful in finding something for me to drink, and very skilled. The atmosphere is nice and it is a gorgeous building.
Just a great late night bar in the Castro. Easy to get a comfortable seat. The waitress was quick and responsive. And the drinks are actually affordable. Will definitely go back to enjoy another drink or three.
Years ago we used to walk past the glass coffin making fun of the old people that would go there. 25 years later, Now Im one of those old people and I still call it the glass coffin. Good Irish coffees, great bloody Marys and especially the great view of City Life walking by. Cheers! Thank you for still being here.
I tried to visit twin peaks bar yesterday with a friend. When I should order the man in the bar said I had to show my passport to order. I was very surprised. I have been in San Francisco for many weeks without having to show my passport. I had an Eu id card and driver licence with me, but that was not enough for him. Is Twin Peaks only for American citizens? If so make a sign showing it! We went to anorther bar showing Id to enter. They treated us friendly without discriminating us😀
We spent Wed and thursday this week at Twin Peaks tavern very friendly staff especially Michael making us feel so relaxed and happy to be there. I want to thank him also for directing us to cafe Mystique a great place with top quality food. We shall be back next year for a definite. Thanks again John & Ian
First time coming here, the space could use a little upgrade, however the bartender serving us was super friendly, we felt instantly welcomed. Drinks were not at all pricey, and the crowds here are interesting mixture of old and young. Definitely coming back here again.
Definitely one of the best views of the city. So good that its getting a lot more tourist and/or visitor traffic. I remember when I used to come here years ago and people didnt quite know how to get here and/or you could still park easily in the lot. But went here late on a cold and windy Tuesday night and I had to park down the street. Will always be one of my favorite places to enjoy the city lights.
Heavens Little Waiting Room! The Glass Coffin doesnt seem to have the silver/blue haired patrons it once did. Great service and nice mix of people. Nice place to sit with friends for a conversation - you can actually hear each other over the music.
This is a wonderful bar, with a very important history in Queer Sociopolitical praxis in the United States. It was the first gay bar to have fully open5glass windows so that people could see who is inside. I used to meet a dear friend here weekly over chardonnay to visit. I highly recommend this establishment as a local meeting spot.
This is very much a local bar, however we had a couple of beers and enjoyed watching the world pass by as it is situated on a busy corner in Castro district. Price of drinks are very cheap compare with central San Francisco which we considered to be a rip off price. Worth popping in and get involved with the locals.
An historical SF landmark. Casual, comfortable gay bar with store front windows offering great views of the Castro street scene. Friendly, if rather slow, bartenders. During happy hour this is basically a club for the mature locals.
Great day-drinking opportunity on the corner with 2-direction views of the Castro. Best smelling bathrooms in San Francisco - seriously, they are next to a bakery and you cant not be impressed. Danny was an awesome bartender mixing us awesome Bloody Marys, pouring us beers, and even a virgin fruit drink for our very pregnant lady friend.
One of the oldest gay bars in the Castro with a very relaxed vibe. It’s a great place for conversation over an Irish coffee while watching the gayborhood pass by. I’ve met many interesting people there on a lonely Sunday afternoon.
Locals call Twin Peaks Tavern The Glass Coffin as 98% of the patrons are over 60 years old. Personally, i think its great. Lots of seating, table service, and friendly bar tenders. Its okay to bring grandma here.
Located in the heart of San Franciscos historic Castro district, this pub should have everything one could ask for. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The interior is dark, dingy, and very dated in the sane way your grandmothers avocado green sofa and orange shag carpet are dated. The liquor selection is limited and leans heavily to low - end choices. Prices for this bottom shelf well liquor are inexplicably comparable to a premium craft establishment.I opted for the best of many bad choices, Knob Creek rye. I asked Steve, the surly bartender for it near with a splash of water. He served it to me on the rocks with half a glass of water. The crowd matched the decor and the lousy selection.
One of my favorite places in the whole world! Great drinks good friends and family! You can look out and see the walking traffic and be very very entertained! A must visit when you are in San Francisco and the Castro.
Nice place, old baby boomer gay crowd.. Bartender is friendly. The usual Castro overpriced drinks though. I did notice that during the pandemic they were begging for donations to stay afloat. Funny, they have never bought me a cocktail, EVER and now they want a handout in the name of nastalgia. Funny I dont remember any one donating to keep the Gay bars open on Polk Street during the AIDS PANDEMIC. IT Decimated San Franciscos original gay neighborhood.
VACCINATION REQUIRED! They check your vaccine card and have hand sanitizer at the bar. LOVE IT!! We felt very comfortable here. Great location. Nice atmosphere. Great bar. Very good pricing. Friendly staff.
Cool place! Interesting interior with lots to look at and wonder about haha. Nothing crazy just a cool place. I’d say drinks are a little cheaper here- more towards $9 instead of $15
Twin Peaks was crowded but definitely has a good queer vibe to it. Do take your ID and vaccine cards and not just online copies as they wont accept that. They only accepts cash and no cards. They do have an ATM machine but it would cost you upwards of 3USD in transaction fees.Drinks were not the best and a bit watered down. The first floor washroom has no latch, climb up to the second floor to use one with a latch.
This bar is practically a landmark. Drinks are made well here and they even have a mall staircase to an upstairs balcony so you can watch all the action below. Classy conversation with chairs and tables that people can actually sit at make this bar a bit different than the likes of the rest in the Stro. Youll also hear people refer to this as The Glass Coffin. Youll understand why when you walk in. Go grab a drink and feel like youre setting foot into a piece of California history.
Eclectic historic Tavern in the Castro. Popular with the older crowd , but also patronized by a younger set. Do not expect fancy, just, camaraderie and Good Vibes, the kind of place where strangers share tables when the bar is packed.
Best bar view, tender is nice and Knowledgeable about drinks. I actually love this place to take a tourists who are visiting from out of town. Great bar and you don’t get that usual snobbery.
The barman needs to seriously have a word with himself…. Rude beyond belief and the drinks were terrible and overpriced. “The tip isn’t included” yeah got it, you didn’t get one for a reason.
Great decor and atmosphere. Unfortunately it was so loud we could barely hear the conversation across our small table. And waiting in line at the bar took forever, even though there were only 2 people in front of me. And that was on a Tuesday early evening.
Go. If it helps you to decide, I was only in the city for three days and I went twice. I instantly felt like I was at home, 100% due to the bartender Paul. The second night, even though I am sure he served hundreds of people after my first visit, he remembered my name and continued to be a flawless host, both genuine and personable, offering help to navigate the bars in the district. Twin Peaks quickly became a comfort zone for me. I was slightly heartbroken to have to shake Pauls hand upon departing and say that it was unlikely that Id be passing this way again. Oh, and, its cash only - I only say this so that he wont have to.
Spoke to a bartender at another bar close by, told him that we didnt have much time in the area but really wanted to check out one more place before leaving. He recommended us to go here and also told us to use the restroom while here. Go there yourself to find out why 😃
Best part of the Castro. No loud thumpa thumpa music here; you can actually hear the the conversation and enjoy the atmosphere. In 6+ years of coming here, Ive never had a bad drink and the staff had always been approachable and upbeat.
Support Castro businesses. The drinks are strong, the service is wonderful, and youre in a piece of gay history. Also, three best Irish Coffees in San Francisco.
Great place. If you like Greek and Trojans ( the people not the prophylactic) history. . Lot of knowledgeable people.Entertaining and fun people go there. . Bring your wit and sense of humor and youll enjoy the place.
Came here after I took a Detour (audio guided tour app) to meet Cleve Jones (!!!!), who worked closely with Harvey Milk. The place has a lot of character as it has been around a long time. The bartenders were super friendly and fun, but the place is pretty small. Twin Peaks is a really good spot for a drink in the Castro aaaaand did i mention theres a place called Hot Cookies next door AKA fresh baked warm cookies? mmmm I couldnt resist. Whats better than a bloody mary and a warm chocolate chip cookie on a Saturday afternoon? Not much.
Cash only in 2024 is simply ridiculous.
Friendly staff and quiet atmosphere. One of the few places in the Castro that has a jukebox. Cash only bar, ATM is upstairs.
Is very interesting here because when you first walk in you would not think that they serve hard liquor but I know I passed by there for years and never stopped in there because I never saw any liquor bottles only wine but when you go inside and you stand at the bar then you can see the liquor bottles its a great sit down and enjoy your cocktail type place that has a upstairs area or if you feel like being Queen for the day and wave at your subjects you can and drink are very good surprised me
A different crowd than it used to be- this place is a lot younger now. The drinks are decently priced- I had a madras and my boyfriend had an Irish coffee for $12 total.
Love the setup. You can hang out upstairs and overlook the lower sit down area. Digital juke box, cool bartenders, fast service. Sierra on tap yeah!
Also known as the glass coffin.A national landmark bar in the Catro. Know for the elderly patrons who frequent there.Good drinks, good company.
The Glass Coffin its a LARK people!! Old school watering hole, great people great bartenders ( especially Jose) friendly people , no nonsense place too have a good drink any time of the day..ENJOY
Steven was a really great guy waited in us with the Best ServiceAnd really made us feel welcome
Bartender was very friendly. Drinks were tasty. Atmosphere was calm and relaxing.
Cash only in San Fran?!!! Why?! Also they don’t know how to make a Aperol Spritz. The history of this place matters and it’s super cosy
Requested a Bloody Mary in a large glass. Although other bars within close proximity serve them in large glasses, this place wouldnt.
This place is great! The bartender was funny, and the regulars are sweet. You get a great view of the streets too
Much older crowd which is either great for stories and learning queer history or very awkward if people get lechy. Strong, cheap drinks and a great place to wait for the bus.
A chill place to talk and have a drink. Not too loud music unlike other bars in the area (not that theres anything bad with that, I just have sensitive ears haha)
The crowd was a very particular type of older gay white gentleman. Not super diverse and not my scene. If youre that clientele and only want to hang out with other people like you, this is the scene.
Certainly a classic with a storied history. We made a quick stop for one after dinner drink then continued our adventures.
And iconic bar with a diverse clientele. Be respectful of the regulars who have visited here for decades and you will be with fascinating stories.
A must see stop in the Castro, for a good drink at reasonable prices, friendly bartenders and awesome people watching out of the picture windows. A Castro historical mainstay!
As a tribute to the old quirky San Francisco🌉 I wanted to be there at least once now that Im older. It was a joyful time and Im happy that I visit the glass coffin.😂
Iconic nightclub in the Castro. Bar service is exemplary. And the people watching first class.
They have good drinks but I am mad at them because they would not accept my friends ID.
Also known as the Glass Coffin ⚰️ as typically, much much older men occupy all of the areas where glass is, Thus, from the outside, youre looking into a glass coffin of old people haha..FACT**
My fave SF gay bar. Good service, drinks and friendly chats and those big windows through which to watch life.
Bar owner is a gentleman, great conversation! If we werent on holiday it would be our local, well priced.
Nice bar if you are looking for a relaxing drink where you can have a conversation without yelling because the music is so loud. Also expect a good stiff one (drink that is).
Купились на рекламу в меню, что здесь лучшая Кровавая Мэри на улице. Страшно представить какая она в остальных местах, потому что эта даже не была нормально смешана.(Translated by Google)We bought into the advertising on the menu that this was the best Bloody Mary on the street. It’s scary to imagine what it’s like in other places, because this one wasn’t even mixed properly.
Great spot for ppl watching. Laid back older crowd. So nice to sit upstairs all cozy with your hunny!
Great cocktails while watching the passerbyers. The smell of cookies from Hot cookies next door is always a bonus!
It is a relic of the past. It is an older gentlemens club and is often referred as the glass coffin! It does have large glass windows to view the passing public
Excellent drinks and people watching at the hub of the Castro. Locals meet here but theyre friendly to tourists.
The ambience, the people and the drinks is what one needs to unravel on a Friday night and it lives up to that. Maybe a little more spaces to sit around would be good.
Great coffee cocktails! Cozy seating and a perfect place to sit back and soak it in.
You can always count on great drinks, meet great people from all walks of life, $ , good vibes , it really is the center of the world.
Rude staff. Avoid
Brilliant little bar good atmosphere and a great choice of drinks .we had a great time there.
Cozy vibe and great prices! Loved the holiday decor. Cash only though! (Theres an ATM upstairs)
Great location, very friendly barkeepers, great drinks and very friendly people
Very cozy and friendly place. When the sun is out you can have a drink with the sun on your back against the window.
Best historic gay dive bar in the world.
Cute little bar with nice ambience. Gets pretty crowded on weekends!
Its a nice, old school bar with reasonably priced cocktails. Cash only.
Bryant was amazing! Loved the drinks he poured and the knowledge he shared!
.Friendly staff. Great location. Reasonably priced adult beverages
Good drinks. And you can talk here. No Loud tunes. Like a.pub in that way.
They had some amazing Halloween decorations and great beer on tap.
Fun place to people watch!! Happy hour drafts are quite reasonable!! Thx
Throw back gay bar. Lots of space. Fun atmosphere. Definitely an older crowd.
Reasonably-priced cocktails in a central location in the castro.. unpretentious, comfortable joint!
I enjoy the general hospitality that is given by the bar. I tend to go here more than the other places in the Castro
Always fun, great service and festive. Great place to people watch and make new friends!
Lots of people = lots of fun. It’s cash only btw.
An institution that survived the AIDS pandemic and is resiliently staying a community anchor during this Covid pandemic. Cheers!
Its called the glass coffee due to the average age of its drinkers I like it because they are long time Castro residence
We love this bar...its been in the Castro area for ages!!!
Strong drinks. Great bartenders and a great place to people watch.
Great location great bartenders and it smells like cookies from the bakery next door.
Great cocktails, the staff are knowledgeable and can make anything you can describe.
Great little sociable local bar. Attentive bartender, friendly clientele.
Very Nice Place! Fantastic music :) Perfect to drink a beer!
Very comfortable place with a great view of people passing down the street.
One of the first gay bars in SF and the first “glass” gay bar also known as the Glass Coffin.
Nice place, but more hanging on to its reputation than actually good.
Excellent service stiff drinks.Lots of castro history
Great place to grab a drink with a friend in a quieter calmer bar in the Castro.
Old classic. This place holds a lot of castro history and houses friendly clientele.
Good street views. Good drink prices. Comfortable.
Its great. You can cat-call from the up stairs windows
So fun and friendly! I highly recommend this place! Paul was amazing!
Iconic place that is nice to relax and have a drink with friends.
Just a perfect spot to chat and people watch. And the drinks are good medicine!
Perfect gay neighborhood bar for sitting with friends, having a conversation, and watching the street life.
Comfortable bar in the Castro. Nice spot to watch the world go by
Legendary watering hole at Americas gayest intersection. And the smell of cookies in the bathroom...
Fun bar, but they need Aperol to make a Spritz.
Okay bar. Great corner location but crowd is different.
Friendly, comfortable atmosphere with great views of the Castro St scene
Nice neighborhood bar. Small and often too crowded.
Cool interior, lackluster service, doesnt take credit cards.
Very friendly bar! Excellent service.
Fun location, interesting people and good drinks!
The crowd is older, but I had a great time.
A nice quiet place to get an Irish coffee and ppl watch
Historical bar with actual real life cocktails. Not over-done, just made right.
A gay institution that values all customers, gay or otherwise! Cash only and fair prices.
Wonderful vibe, friendly service, stiff drinks
It is an important gay icon and a very friendly place.
People are very sympathic. Lovely place To relax and chill
Friendly bar with great views and people watching!
Cash Only, fancy little bar in the heart of Castro, stop in for a drink after work.
Interesting small local bar to start your stroll down the Castro.
Staff is very friendly. Great location for people watching.
Mellow place to catch up amidst otherwise festive Castro bars.
Classy and classic. Ask any patron for the story of the windows.
Bartenders are hot, fun and extremely knowledgeable!
Super fun, great service and drinks
Cute little spot, great for even a date night!
Cash only, reasonably priced drinks for SF.
Very cheap, good place to have a drink with friends.
Big windows to watch the world go by, and lovely bartenders!
Fast service, friendly ppl, cheap drinks!
You will always feel welcome and full of youth at this classic.
Awesome server. Told jokes. Loved this place
Such a pleasant place to chill
A San Francisco institution. Friendly neighbourhood lounge that. has been there for many yea4
Quaint place to stop in for a drink or 2 at Sanfranscisco prices
We love this place. Great staff, great customers
Classic neighborhood bar with a lively street view.
Love this place for a jump in drink or an afternoon hang out.
Best part of SF and met our new BF!
Good place to get your stool pushed in.
