Cool little Honkey Tonk bar near downtown Austin. Pool table, live music, lively crowd and lots of fun. The place gets packed pretty quickly. Good mix of ages. The taco truck outside is inexpensive and surprisingly good. Drink prices are reasonable and definitely a bar I plan on coming back to regularly.
I love this bar. Especially the dancing classes. Beth coffee is an Austin establishment and she makes learning the Texas two step so easy and fun. The environment is so welcoming. I’ve taken multiple friends to the classes and they both thought it was the highlight of the trip. It’s really easy to start the night here for a class and then party the rest of the night away!
We went last weekend to dance and listen to some live music. This place was a lot of fun. Beer is fairly cheap. No air conditioning, but they had a few fans. It was okay, even on a hot night. The music was great. Dancing was fun!! Wed go back for sure.
Great place to take first comers. Every time we have visitors that have never come to Austin we take them here. Very great Texan 2 step dancing place. They do charge cover on popular days
We came on a Tuesday night and were served by a guy that worked two jobs and he was genuinely amazing. However came back on our last night (Monday 10th June), and waited 20mins for any service whatsoever, they gave us the wrong drinks to which at this point I had to shout someone over because they’d ignored us the whole time- told them I wasn’t happy with the service, he said he didn’t know who was serving our section- the woman behind the bar kept staring and smirking and making us feel uncomfortable. It’s such a shame because we had such a fantastic time the first time. Goes to show the people you employ really make a difference.
An Austin institution. You can come here to drink, to eat but if you dont come here to dance and two-step, what are you doing with your life? Grab a Lone Star, grab a partner and dossey-do onto the dance floor.
Such an amazing place to go for live music and dancing. It has all the best parts of Texas wrapped up in a quaint lil bar. I love it!
Male AGGRESSION from server & manager was surreal. It was Halloween weekend when my girlfriend & I dressed up as a cop & drug smuggler. We had disposable walkie-talkie props that I could care less if we lost them. At entry the door man did point out that we can’t bring them in so we said that’s ok and turned them upside down to show that the containers were empty. So his response was it’s ok. We went in no big deal. After paying admission & getting second round of drinks and filling our props with water to mindfully hydrate we went outside to rest our feet. While chatting alone minding our own business a server comes along quickly to clear the table of empty drinks and without ever speaking to this person before in our lives he begins to grab our props and with anger he demands we throw them away. I understand he has to work quickly but the level of aggression in his demeanor was out of no where. I place the props closer to him and said-take it. My friend was upset at his delivery (so was I) and I didn’t feel necessary to stop her from defending us as she emphasized the drinks in our hand that she bought. So why would he be angry at us for having props on Halloween. The server did not take her response well so demanded we leave. I was shocked at how quickly and terribly he treated us. I told him that I want to speak to a manager because his approach is rude/uncalled for considering we were minding our own business and now he wants to kick us out for defending ourselves over a costume on Halloween night. He tried to delay getting a manger and he almost refused to do so until I asked for the third time.As we sat there waiting suddenly a bald man grabs one of the props and begins to tear it apart aggressively only to find that it’s a coconut water container with water inside. He was yelling as us and saying something to the point that we can’t bring containers inside and that it’s a violation of their rules. True, but I just could not believe what I was seeing and was at a lost for words. My friend, again, was defending us and started yelling at him for his destructive behavior over costumes. I asked him three times to allow me to explain our situation and he would yell over me “GTFO” more than once. He toned it down a bit when I turned on the camera. As we started to exit he got more enraged when he said-dont go that way-which was towards the dance floor and how we came in. He could have escorted us but instead kept yelling with spit and said get out of my bar! I recorded this separately. My friend was pulled by her arm to get redirected as I lost her while exiting and waited a while to see her exit. She definitely had a reason to defend herself and is always a nice and caring person there was a reason to be upset and for that reason I am writing this review.I tried to reach out to white horse with this video and brief explanation but have back. I don’t even care about the props it’s just the level of aggressive men who don’t have customer service skills and should not be in a bar where people are minding their own business to have a good time while paying for it. I know the service industry is struggling these days and that is why I hesitated to post this review and give them an opportunity to handle this situation with out a post. I also understand that props like open containers are not allowed but that is also why we proved they were empty and we also bought drinks. Also it was a halloween weekend where I wanted to show my girlfriend a good time as a welcome to Austin girls night out. However these two men completely dumbed on it. I had wanted to enjoy White Horse for what it is as a staple but this kind of treatment is uncalled for. See videos…
One of the few places that you can still get a little glimpse of what Austin used to be like when it was actually Austin.Great music, pretty girls, strong liquor.Theres nothing more than you could ask for in a dive bar.
This is one of the spots where the true Austin dancers go during the week (Tuesdays being a common night)—I’ve come here for years! The style is a fusion, non-traveling two-step with a twist of blues and swing. Dance to live music (or watch!) and make sure not to stand on the the floor or bring a drink out there while dancing (huge faux pax!). Let one of the regulars show you the basics and tip the band!(Also: whiskey on tap, food truck out back, and bring cash for cover)
I had the experience of White Horse as a tourist and it was Great! It was my first day in Austin The Staff was friendly, live band was playnig country music ,and there was a kind of lesson for two steps dance local texan music ! I danced with 4 different persons and really enjoy it! It s becoming rare a man to ask an unknown woman to dance! And that is exciting!
I had not been dancing in over 20 years. I needed to kill some time before heading to a family party for New Years Eve. I decided to stop in and just have a beer. I was nervous and apprehensive being alone, a woman, not to mention in my 50’s. I was very happy to discover there was a great mix of age. Young and old having a great time. A great range of race as well. Very Austin. I got asked to dance a couple of times. The men were complete gentlemen. They danced with me and then went on their way. They didn’t try to buy me a drink or invade my space. Just fun dancing. What a fantastic experience. I stayed so long I barely made it to my family party before midnight. Cash only at the door. ATM on-site was a Godsend. Great outdoor patio as well.
I love the place. Its an Austin jewl. In the ninetys, it used to be a Tejano club, and the same layout (unlike most places on thd EastSide) hasnt change on the legendary White Horse. I was on the hood on the summer of 2024 and I was asked to leave the premises, without any reasoning. I am just wondering, what did I do,? To be disrespected that way.
Went specifically to see Velvet saddles. Everyone working there including the bouncer, the bartenders.. super nice, friendly, and helpful. I hate going to Austin so I was expecting to experience the typical ATX BAR, and this place actually wasnt trash at all. People were genuinely happy and the music was great.
Our groups evening was ruined by a tall, skinny bearded busboy/barback who apparently was doing double duty as security. We were outside of the front doors leaving, looking through the wooden fence at some friends taking pictures. He proceeded to tell us to get away from the fence and said he was going to call the police. He continued to bow up, trying to intimidate us. The security guy checking IDs watching the whole thing, didnt move, wouldnt help. As we walked toward the street, busboy/wanna be security kept walking behind us, I guess, to ensure that we were complying with his request. In any event, an awful customer experience. We can take our business elsewhere and hope others do the same.
Switch up your going out routine & hang out at this longstanding honky tonk. stellar live music several nights a week, cold drinks & nommy Mex food truck out back. Check web for two step lessons & music line ups. Cash cover.
Everyone Rocks here!We got Gary the Gatekeeper, Mikey and Luke slinging drinks with excellent service and speed, Evan keeping the place spotless, the sound guys, the excellent nightly bands to include my personal favorite -Armadillo Road and the best little taco truck in the back. I love this place and every interaction Ive ever had there in the past 4 years of visiting (I drive an hour to specifically come here). People from all over the world come together in this little iconic honky tonk to dance, play pool & drink together. I honestly cant think of a better place to spend my time and money- the connection amongst people & atmosphere is quite magical 😉 Make sure to try at least one dance before you go- the regulars are wonderful at teaching the two-step, even if you think you have two left feet 😂I highly recommend checking out this bar, promise you wont regret it!
White Horse was so fun! We did a two stepping lesson and drank some beer, had a lovely time. It was a good atmosphere and everyone was very helpful.
The staff is great. The food is only out of food truck in the back patio. It does seem to be a hot spot for the locals and they are not very accepting of tourists. Also they do not allow line dancing. There is literally a sign prohibits line dancing despite a google search for line dancing in the Austin area. Great for the locals, would not recommend for tourists.
A quintessential Austin Honky Tonk with a dope, down to earth vibe. Went here during the whirlwind that is SXSW - for an early evening party and it still carried an authentic vibe. Two step lessons and all. See you soon
Met up with friends to see Jeff Hughes and Chaparral. Great show. I like the layout and dance floor. No bad seats in the place. Water station with easy access and plenty of cups. Staff is friendly and helpful- all of our orders were correct and taken care of quickly. Great experience!
If you find yourself in Austin looking for a REAL Texas honky tonk, the the White House is a must. Watching the dancing gives me faith in humanity, if not for a couple minutes. All races, classes, and cultures are dancing together, and the music is absolutely TOP NOTCH. However, it is relatively expensive.
Lost one more customer because of your mad bouncer at the entrance . He literally said bad words just because I was holding a beer. Don’t feel like going back ever. Will make sure my friends won’t go either. Management, good luck with that guy
The worst experience here.$10 cover for what?!Tried playing pool whileListening to music, was told by the bartender that I could just go play at the pool tableOutside, even though the one inside had just finished and the players were leaving.Later..Standing next to Someone selling jewelry inside waiting for my friend ordering a drink. Vendor told me to either buy something or stand somewhere else. Not sure if she thought I was trying to pull something on her, Fine whatever.Later that night I ordered an Uber and stood next to the jewelry vendor as that was the meeting spot for our friends.Vendor rudely and forcefully shoves me away and says I told you to move!Listen I havent done anything, Im just standing here minding my own business theres no need to shove meVendor told the bouncer to kick me out over being difficult. Security promptly kicked me out quoting listen shes here 5 days a week, so if she wants someone out, that persons getting kicked outHad I been drinking? 1, with the 2nd taken by the bouncer. Did I dress suspect? Had a blazer and dress shoes on. I have my suspicions on the true reason of being asked to leave but I’ll keep that off hereWaited outside in the rain for the UberI do not recommend this spot
This is one of the better dance halls Ive been to. Everyone wants to dance and people are very patient with new dancers on the dance floor. There is a cover which sucks but hopefully it goes to the musicians
We enjoyed our night at The White Horse! The band was fantastic and the dancing fun. I can see why it’s an Austin fixture.
A fun honky-tonk. Seemed like a popular spot for dancing. No seating inside but there is a patio with seating.
On a girls trip for the weekend and we were looking for live country music. We got to hear three bands in a very relaxed atmosphere, lots of folks dancing if you like that. Everyone was real friendly! Drinks were reasonable, the cover was reasonable, and there was a pool table and a great patio as well. Would absolutely return!
Texas Two Step Lesson with Beth are the best! Very fun and low pressure, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
Really fantastic two-step dance on a Saturday night. A must-see when visiting Austin if you want to participate in local culture. ($10 cover). And superb bar service, the bartender remembered our drinks from the first round. Will be back!
Remember to bring cash for the cover charge. Great place to hang out with friendly folks and enjoy quality live country bands. Be prepared for a tight crowd. Taco truck on the patio is one of my faves.
This was a great dive bar with a country band. We were hoping to find line dancing and it was highly recommended to go there. Its four stars because the bartender acted put out when I asked which beers are on tap on the side where I couldnt see the taps. He just pointed to the sign with an annoyed look. It was only 9:00, so it wasnt as busy as most bars can get. Usually in a happy atmosphere the bartenders are matching the vibe. I can tell its a really fun place for locals in their 20s to hang out and connect.
The bar itself is fine, the dancing is very cool. The on-site food truck is great. The staff though—Lord. The bartenders and bar backs hate their jobs, I guess? I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a less friendly staff. They were rude to pretty much every patron they encountered. I understand those jobs are stressful, but dang. My friends and I could have made a drinking game out of the glares the bartenders gave people looking to buy drinks. An encounter with an extremely disrespectful bar back really put a dent in mine and my girlfriend’s experience. We immediately left. I hope they put all the $10 cover fees towards therapy or hiring women. I feel like I need to shower the toxic masculinity off of me after being in there.
We had one of the best nights out ever at the White Horse. Planning for a girls trip with my mom to Austin, I heard the White Horse was a classic bar for live music and dancing. We walked by the venue in the the daytime and were not impressed (used tire store vibe). Still, we gave it shot since it was near our dinner restaurant.Being from Nashville, the bar is high for any honky tonk, but this one far exceeded. It was busy, but never too crowded and it was always easy to get a drink. Truly, the best part about it was the people. There were a couple of local ladies who befriended us in line and made sure we were settled in, and checked in with us throughout the evening to chat and dance. My mom is a legitimate dancer and she found lots of talented men (much her junior) to two step with. We met so many nice people to talk and dance with, and none of the men hit on either of us, but a number were kind enough to try to lead my clumsy self in a dance. The quote of the evening came when my mom asked what time it was. I responded “1:15” and her response was “Great! We still have 45 more minutes!!” And accordingly, we shut the place down…
Cheap beer, beautiful women, great dancing, good food. Amazing spot.
I love the White Horse. Always has fun live music. Not the best dance floor, but good enough to get the job done and have a blast doing it. Their outside also has a really neat atmosphere and great food truck. In my opinion, its a great first date place. This is where I met my lady and were coming up on our first year.
This is so much fun! They have two-step free lessons and then open dance with amazing live bands. The ambiance is great we loved it! A must go in Austin, an authentic country bar.
Great vibes, dance teacher was fun, though we didnt learn anything but the basic step. Beer selection is a little low by Austin standards, but doable. Bar was understaffed, but that happens. I would take a guest or a date here.
This was so much fun. At 5:30 pm its pretty low key but at 7 pm they have the two step lessons for free. Was so much fun! After that they had great band till 2 am which was so much fun to dance to. Highly recommend this place. Bartenders was quick and very helpful
Love it here. Please check it out, and dance you wont regret it!
Awesome music and dancing. This is a must see place in austin
Solid bar for dancing, listening to music, or just hanging out with friends. Perfect East Austin vibe. Went on a Wednesday night and the band was jamming and plenty of people on the dance floor. They have a nice fenced in beer garden too. Beers were a bit pricey for the place unfortunately.
Tons of fun and great atmosphere. A must when visiting austin.
Decent but small. Toilet and urinal are in the same stallin the Mens room.
Atmosphere was great but bartenders and bouncer were extremely rude and the drinks were extremely overpriced
Really cool bartender, good strong drinks, and great local music. Teddy Long played when we were there and was seriously awesome. One of the few great actual dive bars, not hipster bars, in our search.
The White Horse is a charming pub located in the heart of the city. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with cozy seating and a crackling fireplace. The staff is friendly and attentive, always eager to chat with guests and make sure they have a great experience. The drinks selection is excellent, with a range of beers, wines, and cocktails to choose from. Whether youre grabbing a quick drink with friends or settling in for a meal, The White Horse is a great choice. Highly recommended
If you are coming from out of town and want to line dance or two step dont go here. This bar should not be on the list when you search line dancing. This bars dance floor was super small. It was mixed with table and chairs that shouldnt be there and then the bar. I dont know how ppl were two stepping. The bartender was great. I walked in and ordered a drink and he got all the drinks for my party very quickly. The live band was really good i just wished they would of mixed a few newer songs in with the music they were playing. It was hard to get the in the groove to dance with sings i didnt know.
The doorman asked for our id. We gave it but he didn’t let us in even though we are 35. It felt like discrimination since I’m from Europe.
We were looking forward to our night at The White Horse, but it turned sour very fast. Not only were the staff dismissive & condescending, it became clear we were being targeted. The staff continuously told us we were dancing or standing in a location we shouldn’t be, which we’d respect had other groups not been doing the exact same thing without being approached. The staff appeared to relish in exerting authority over women, as if their positions granted them the right to belittle and diminish others. I strongly advise all women seeking an enjoyable night out to look elsewhere for an inclusive, respectful environment.
Amazing place to look real texas culture and dance contry
True old school Texas honky tonk. They always have great country and swing bands here. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced. Plus, they do free two step lessons. Very fun place!
Girl red red in her hair and pigtails was not super helpful and looked bother for no reason, margaritas were okay
Nice place to watch fake cowboys show off what 20k in dance lessons can buy. I love that there is always live music but dont expect it to always be good or to know any of the songs.
My girlfriend’s shoe fell off and while she was trying to get it back on she got yelled at by an “employee” who was extremely rude and condescending!
This used to be a fantastic bar for dancing in Austin however the vibe has changed severely.l and for the worst. Theres no true dancefoor which has led to issues with lack of flow, lack of drink-setting space, and broken toes. The prestige of this venue has attracted a lot of fantastic bands, but honestly I pity them because the crowd is such trash. The venue offers little to no support for creating a true dancing experience anymore and Im sad to finally say we wont be back again.
Wow, what a great experience. A highlight of our visit to Austin! The gals at our hotel said we had to come here and we are so glad we did! Felt very welcomed. Music was great. We even danced a little! Highly recommended!
It’s a bar. As they say, it’s for purists and tourists. It’s the real deal, and because it is there are lots of tourists there to see it.
Had a great time drinking and dancing, friendly people
It was great finding this country gem in our neighborhood. It was a perfect spot to do some two stepping and had a great band. The crowd was there for proper dancing. The only draw back was not enough A/C! I cant confirm if it even has any. That TX summer heat is no joke and dancing hand in hand gets really toasty! Otherwise, great spot.
It was so much fun! I loved having the food truck (delicious). Outside patio allowed me & my friend to get to visit, and then went inside where we enjoyed the three performers- we got a chance to two-step!
Great place to learn to two step!Great vibes. Came here 6 years ago and visited again on a road trip. My favorite bar in Austin
Most of the times I go here it’s fun and the folks who teach the lessons are super sweet as well as the bartenders.Have had a few negative run ins with folks who have been customers but that’s not on the business. Most people here just want to have a good time and 2 step. Would recommend checking out lessons on Thursdays and Friday’s if you’re new to it!
Yee Haw Two-Stepin Rootin (and Tootin) headquarters. Sometimes theres this short handsome hunk in there selling classy-ish bolo ties. But all the times theres amazing human beings (and Mikey) behind the bar.
We saw 2 bands between 10-ish and 2. They were both awesome; the 2nd was a little more rock and roll/twang/country, if that makes sense. Really eclectic crowd and age range. Was a fabulous night for the music and dancing. Drinks were fine. Bathrooms, as expected in a dive bar, at least for the women, were TINY and one was broken... $10 cover was more than worth the entertainment.
Favorite local hotspot. Decent dance instruction, and a crowd thats generally up for it no matter your style. People are not too judgy about the footsteps.Bathrooms are a bit tiny and dirty.
This place made my heart happy. Amazing honky-tonk music in classic old school setting, all types/genders/orientations/colors of skin dancing and smiling together
Fun and festive live music venue on Austins East Side. We saw two great bands here and had some tasty cold beers. It was a fun night.
Great bar, meh two-step lessons.I went on a Thursday and the teacher (Beth?) started class late, spent 30 minutes mostly demonstrating on stage, then went around asking for tips in her tip jar/love bucket.Usually when Ive taken pre-live music classes like these, they spend an hour teaching and giving lots of opportunities to do the steps. It may have been ok for tourists or people who maybe arent really looking to learn a few basic steps but it was disappointing.
My family really wanted country music in Austin numerous people told us snot this place but the night we were there was a huge let down. The band was talented but played really really old music a group of 13 country fans food not know one song. It is definitely a hole in the wall. The bartender was super nice! The dancing was fun too watch. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting! We stuck in there for 45 minutes. There are 3 bands we were only there for the first one, maybe it got better.
Went here for the first time for the free two step lesson. It was cool to see so many people there at 7pm to try it out! Friendly, fun atmosphere. My boyfriend and I love to dance, so we enjoyed it here. The live band was great, and theres a cute little outdoor space with a pool table. I didnt get any drinks, so I cant comment on that. But I saw some really cheap happy hour specials posted (like $2 wells).
I love this place! It is one of my favorite bars to hit in East Austin. Im not an accomplished two stepper or even a big country fan, but this bar seems to appeal to everyone. They get absolutely fantastic Country, rockabilly, two step bands and some of the people dancing are incredible. No need to be self-conscious, just hit the dance floor. Take your date or ask someone else to dance. Everyone is in the mood. The ambience is very simple and old school. Quite authentic old East Austin
Soooooo fun. Amazing place to feel the Texas culture and watch locals who can two step their bootys off. We took a two step lesson from Beth and came back later in the evening to give it a try. Felt like there was a good mix of locals and tourists. Lots of bachelorette party’s too. I can’t wait to go back.
Music was average, parking sucks, dont know if they even have food, its a smoke free bar but apparently wasnt smoke free before because it still reeks of smoke.
The band was good and we were charged a cash only $10 cover. But it was so hot inside that I was dripping in sweat and didn’t dance. I eventually left and went back to the AirBnB.It’s got alot of hipsters in there and staff were not friendly. They told my friend he couldn’t make a phone call inside the bar. They got after us for standing too close to the dance floor with a drink in our hand. They told us we couldn’t leave through the front door….etc. if I ever went back I would go in winter!
Always a fun place to go dancing. In the middle of hipster world this is a nice break.Update: 6/2022 - still great a little more of a tourist attraction than it used to be. But for good reason, its one of the only places that has traditional good country music and dancing opportunities. Basically, Wednesdays the new Friday
I love this bar!!!! I’ve been looking for a great place in Austin to go dancing and I found it! The bands are always amazing, and the crowd is even friendlier! A great place not too far from downtown to find a classic country dive bar! You can even catch dance lessons a few times a week
Being from Indiana and walking into White Horse (Austin Texas)was a whole new atmosphere (experience).Loved the band. Had an electric fiddle & a still guitar. I sat in awh while watching people interact & 2-step across the floor.Loved every minute❤️White Horse is a Must See!
OMG! Was so great to be dancing again! The cover price is doubled to $10. If you get in before 8:00 they wont charge you. But if you stay after 8:00 theyll come around to your table and charge you. The beers, whether its a light beer or a Corona or $6 each. There is no happy hour. The live music started around 9:00. There was no earlier band. The staff was friendly. You need to wear a mask while youre dancing and if youre not sitting at your table. If you dont have a place to sit they said they wont let you in. But this could change. This was only the second night there were open in October 2020.It was all worth being able to dance to a live band again. I just loved it.BTW, they took their popcorn machine out 😥
Nice bar but please make sure you only use cash there. After I opened a tab, I ended up with unauthorized transactions on my card. Nobody picks up the phone at White Horse so Im disputing it with AmEx.
Um guys... It The White Horse. How could you go wrong? Amazing music. Amazing people. Amazing tourist. Amazing bartenders. Amazing dancing.Just go and have fun! No one is judging.
Great venue and was very excited for the show, but the people in charge of parking (I am assuming) were beyond rude. I had parked behind a couple other people like others had, assuming it was fine and the person in charge of coverage into the show (was very kind) and let me in after paying the fee but when I went back to my car to drop something off, someone (who seemed random) asked me to move my car because it was parked behind others (despite others doing the same) so I did and despite that, they did not allow me to re-enter. The coverage person was going to let me re-enter after I moved my car and I had apologized for the way I had parked but said random person was not only incredibly rude and disrespectful to me for my prior parking, but so rude to their own coworker, the coverage man, for wanting to let me back in. I had to watch this man bully the coverage man into not allowing me re-entrydespite the (at this point unwarranted) apology for how I had parked before and moving of my car. And when my friend, who asked me to drive him home asked why I couldn’t come back in the venue, the same random person threatened to kick him out as well without any explanation. I hope whoever this person is, is taught how to treat their peers and customer or is fired because this was a terrible first experience to this venue.
Funtastic! We went for the friday two-step lessons! Had the best time we had had in a long time! The teacher was exceptional, and the dancing was fun. It does get a bit crowded on the dance floor, so if you lead, keep your eyes open. The drinks were tasty and the bands sounded like country gold!We will come back when we are in Austin again!
Caught a fantastic lil Cajun band here last night completely by surprise. Excellent music and friendly staff. Reasonable selection of a variety of beers. Before the band went on there was a Cajun dance lesson as well. Thought that was a cool thing.Just an overall excellent vibe and great little club.
What a dump. I would give it zero stars if I could. Crowded. Dirty. Bands are hit or miss. The idea of dancing is jumping around at random. Clientele is rude snotty cliques act like theyre too good to associate with you. Dance lessons are a joke. Dont waste your time or money. Stay home and drink.
Really cool little spot. I went to see Cowboy Dave and his band play which was awesome. The price of drinks was reasonable. The dance floor was a little too small but it might have been the way the tables were set up. I plan to go back and see what its like again. Maybe I can catch another cool band while visiting.
This place is probably great if youre a country dancer. My wife and I had a terrific time when we went during dance lessons. If youre like me and worried about making a fool of yourself, then once the early evening dance lesson is over, youll want to find another bar.Theres whiskey on tap! Otherwise, as far as bar service, its pretty standard.
Got to try line dancing for the first time, tacos were tasty, cover charge seemed like a stretch for the level of bar compared to dozens down on raney street without covers
Fun place to dance! Live music was great and cover was only $5. Drinks werent too expensive, but Id stick to beer or wine here. Outdoor seating area was nice and theres a food truck available.
Found this place after considering going to the Broken Spoke during my visit to Austin. Went on a Fri for the free (donation suggested) dance class and it was great. Not too crowded, easy to follow and pick up. Very fun over all. Happy Hour is going on during the class so thats a plus. Live music afterwards was great.
This place consistently has great live music with little or no cover charge ($5 sometimes on a Saturday with a big line-up). Theres also usually a decent crowd thats not afraid to dance, which gets the bands excited, and the energy in the room is awesome! Throw in a taco truck, a couple pool tables, and a piano out back, and you get great little honky-tonk. Five-star dive, no doubt.
Yee Haw! The best TX 2 step talent in Austin goes here, period. Former professionals, country folk, city steppers like me, and first time tourists. Go to people watch even if you cant/dont want to dance. This place was established 2011 and hasnt changed since. A sign on the wall says No f@c%ing Line Dancin! Take that Californians! The bar is named after a line in Johnny Cashs song The Man Comes Around. I can hold it down on the dance floor pretty well. Twice Ive gone steppin elsewhere and been told I bet you go to the White Horse. The place is decorated with 1970s and 1980s neon beer advertisements. Always a classic car parked out front. There are 2 pool tables and a photo booth. Its as eclectic and random as this review.Lively on Wednesdays through the weekend, small cash door charge is more than offset by the cheap drinks. The taco truck in back has some of the best campechano (interior Mexican style) tacos in town. Theyll even add it to the queso.
We walked in on a Saturday and the band was jamming and the dance floor was on fire. I highly recommend this place for some great southern rock and two stepping. The cover was really reasonable, especially since they had a live band!
Such a fun time! The live music was stellar and we enjoyed dancing and taking pics in the Photo Booth. Must go in Austin!
This place was so much fun watching every person dancing the two step. Everyone just wanted to dance, young, the in between, and the old. Great place we enjoyed it through the Crawl of Music.
A really fun dive bar/honky-tonk. Great live music. Even more entertaining is watching the very talented patrons dancing. There are some very good dancers here and it is great just watching them have such a great time. The place dies get very crowded though. But if you are in Austin, check this place out.
Great country live music and two step dancing! Everyone is super friendly! It would be nice if the accepted credit card cover. Currently, only cash covers are accepted.
Great dive bar in Austin and fantastic live band! Had so much fun learning how to do the Texas Two Step!
First off, the staff has always been amazing every time I have been there--fast, friendly, and helpful. The food is fantastic bar food--definitely not for those on low cal, low sodium, low grease diets. That is exactly why I go there! The Reuben sandwich is awesome! The Reuben burger is off the hook! I love the house fries, but there are other choices. Cold beer and plenty of options (mostly big brewery options, so no craft or specialty beers). This place rocks for watching sports too.
Divey no BS honky tonk with live music and dancing. Considering its location off of 6th it has remained particularly authentic. Fun time but the door man and bartenders come across as rude and completely uninterested with the influx of tourism. I would skip the taco truck in the back but its good to have as an option.
Loved it, on our honeymoon from England and this place was recommended by the bar tender in our hotel, a little apprehensive after reading some of the negative reviews on here but went along anyway and had the best night, staff were welcoming and friendly, music was great, even managed a little 2 step ourselves!! A real highlight of our holiday so far!!
They treated us in a very rude manner. When we arrived we saw a sign saying white horse parking and we assumed it was for the clients. As soon as we got out of the car the doorman started shouting at us, we asked where we could park and explained our mistake but he just kept yelling at us, clearly not wanting us to come in. It is important to note that there was no one else waiting to enter when we arrived so the doorman could have taken the time to explain in a polite manner and let us know where we could park. Actually, now that I am reading other reviews, it is clear that this was the parking lot for the bar and they just did not want us in. We were coming in with a brand new luxury car and dressed appropriately.
Cool vibe here. Very divey & old Austin. Coldest lonestars around (besides La Perla, of course). Highly reccomend finding some live music here & enjoying top notch people watching.
I went there with my bestfriend already pretty drunk and we had the best time just dancing and goofing during one of their live shows. Definitely will remember the great vibes this place has. Also I noticed a lot of kind people there just giving out compliments (could be the alcohol imagining stuff but hey)
An underrated Austin country bar where you can find great live music daily! Easy to grab someone and start dancing if your so inclined. There are some really experienced regulars here so dont be shy. Does not feel like a snoody place. Fair drink prices as well.
Not really my scene, I was disappointed by the restrooms, but the service was good. Not enough places to sit or room to dance, but people were still dancing which is nice to see. The featured taco truck was dang good. Plus they had a pool table which was neat, and a free-use out of tune piano.
This is not a good place for dancing. Way too small even for just hanging out. It’s hard to believe this gets such good ratings. Not worth the parking hassle, cover charge, long wait for drinks, no room for dancing place. Big bald bartender was rude & wouldn’t look me in the eye. I guess he believes size doesn’t matter cause I would whoop his a$$!!!!
Two step (shot of whiskey and a beer) for $6. Live music. Pool. Piano anyone can play on the patio. Food truck attached to the patio as well. Good music and plenty of room to cut a rug on the dancefloor...😎
Live music was fantastic. Lively dance floor was entertaining to people watch. If there were seating options, more space would be available for dancers. Drinks were cold. Overall, place is a little run down and dated but entertainment makes up for it.
Its alright. Seems very touristy and not a very big dance floor. They played old country in between the band sets, so kind of just a dark, dingy, sleepy bar. $10 cover charge felt like a rip too.
This review is based on a Sunday evening. But if you want to out on a Sunday, this is the place to go. There is a good amount of people, without being to many. The prices are low and there is a friendly atmosphere. You can either hang out at the bar, dance to the music or hang out at the patio so will say that most people could have a great evening here
Super fun dive bar. My friend brought me here to learn how to 2 step. They offer lessons for a voluntary donation. If you stick around, locals will just come up and ask you to dance. So fun and will definitely come back on my next visit.
Great little honky tonk just east of downtown Austin.
One of my favs in Austin. Amazing live music, free popcorn, and all around great atmosphere. Don’t stand on the dance floor if there is dancing going on. Love it when someone rides their horse there and ties it up outside on the post! This place is authentic Austin.
AWESOME bar with great music and an amazingly yummy Taco truck! We came on a Sunday from a recommendation from a friend. We thought it will be a low-key thing since its Sunday. Thank goodness we were wrong! Conjuntos Los Pinkys was playing and they were outta sight! So much fun dancing! Everyone was so nice. Not overly crowded. Drinks were inexpensive and poured well. One of the best bars in Austin!
Loved this place. was exactly what i was craving after a year away from bars and live music. cheap texas beers, good music, dancing, a photo booth, outside seating too… classic texas, classic austin, a truly amazing venue. it is very hard to not have a good time here - if you enjoy everything i have described above you should visit!
Best Honky Tonk! Excellent live music. The outside area with the pool table and the food truck are both fantastic.
I’m from NYC so getting to the white horse is everything I wanted to see, good drinks, great bands and lots of fun dancing. Many southern gentlemen who ask politely and just want to dance nothing more which is so refreshing! I suggest checking the band line up’s before coming because vibes can change from a honky tonk to something more jazzy :)
I think the term dive bar is a bit unfair for this place. Great live music (country) the night I went, there were people of all ages and capabilities dancing the night away. A cool bar with plenty on offer. A $5usd cover on the door for the band. Dont be shy, or be afraid to dance if your asked, a real friendly crowd frequents this place. Oh, and yes.... Some people still ride their horses to the bar!
I have to tell you about this place called the white horse, it seems like everybodys on the White Horse. Haha I say that because this place is full of energy, the crowd is amazing the people are amazing. This place Comes Alive once the band starts playing it doesnt matter who you are, what you got going on in the world, or what you do. It doesnt matter whether you can dance or not the people here are super friendly everyone associated with everyone it was an amazing crowd of people. Theres some people who were willing to teach you how to dance even though they all claimed not to be teachers everyone knows a little bit of Step and a very friendly . I have to tip my hat off to the people that created this atmosphere, whoevers in charge of this place is doing a good job bringing all the right people in who just want to have fun and dance. Ive never seen so many people interacting with strangers in a dance Hall, and I go dancing quite often. It seems like everyone knew each other even though they didnt just as I didnt know anyone. Everyone there was open to meet everyone else on the Dance Floor. With all the spinning and all the Turning from all the dance moves that everyone had, it was wonderful to see and to experience and to be a part of it. I was invited to go last night with a friend and if after last night experience, I will definitely return to this place and recommend, should you want to go dancing visit this place. This was a Wednesday night and the place was packed, one person told me who goes quite often, that place on Fridays and Saturdays is insane with the amount of people that go in to dance. The dance floor so full theres literally bodies everywhere and everyone is bumping into each other but I hear its a great time. I can tell you that if the weekend is 10 times more intense then Wednesday you will be sure to have an unforgettable night.
Dark, quaint. Perfect Southern vibes throughout. Complete space with live music nightly, pool table and a taco truck out back. Not sure why my bartender lied about not having ingredients to make a margarita. And the two tequila sours we asked for were both tequila sodas. Aversion to sweet/sour flavors? Maybe. Fantastic live music and dancing? Absolutely
I probably should have caught the vibe and just left before even visiting this bar. Bouncer was a rude control freak, he yelled at my girlfriend for looking thru the fence to see if our friends were there before we even walked in. The bar back was super rude to my brother and a handful of other patrons. I didnt have a single positive encounter with any of the bar staff. There wont be a return trip to this bar ever again from me. Broken Spoke is a much better use of your time, skip this one, they dont need your money, and theyll let you know that fact every step of the way.
This place is situated in a great location. It also seems to have a lot of fun games. I was disappointed in the long wait time at the bar for no reason. My friend and I stood there for 10 minutes while bartenders casually walked back and forth ignoring us. Oh well, no big loss. There are plenty of other bars in Austin to check out. I am just glad I didnt pay the cover charge.
Ive been raving about white horse to all my friends for years. i love walking in and seeing every kind of person dancing and having a good time. my boyfriend and his best friend got shots last night and linked arms while taking them. the bartender (man) was quick to comment, saying, were not that kind of bar.I have always loved white horse for its inclusivity, but if it being run by homophobic, insecure men, then i am confidently fine with never giving another dollar to this establishment.Godspeed to any LGBTQ+ member of our community who visit or frequent here.
Just ask anyone in Austin and theyll probably know about this grungy, inviting spot for music and dancing. It looks like its been there 50 years, but its happening right now. Dance classes if you get there early enough on most nights, and almost every night they have great music there. Stand inside and dance or enjoy the band. Step outside for a visit to the perennial taco truck, or just to get some fresh air and talk with friends.
This is about as authentic of a bar as I’ve seen in Austin. Good ok’ dive bar scene with live music and two-step dancing. Very cool bar but come prepared to two-step with locals! And if you want some free lessons come here at 7pm on Saturdays (or so I’m told)
Super fun. Iconic Austin. GREAT music - R&B on Sunday night, Swing on Wednesdays, 2 Step Country on Thursday and Saturday, plus my FAV, the Cajun lessons and Live music on Friday before 10. Whats not to love? Great people, GREAT staff the Live music Austin is known for AND drink specials.... i♡Whitehorse
White Horse always has some extraordinary blues band playing and you can enter without a cover. It also coincidentally gathers the most dance-loving people. Has a great space and floor for people to dance!
What a neat experience. This is def a spot to hit up for a quintessential Austin vibe. Drinks were strong and there were vendors there selling wares. Pretty cool. Def go back again
The White Horse is a great place to go for awesome music and lively bands. Whether its country music, bluegrass, rockabilly, brass bands, cajun, salsa or swing, youre going to have a fun time. The acoustics are good and theres a decent sized dance floor, plus several tables and seats at the long bar. On the interior porch is a piano you can play if the mood strikes you. Outside is a large outdoor patio which features delicious tacos from the Bomb Tacos food trailer.
Wonderful experience for locals and tourists. We regularly go to the White Horse on Thursday nights for dance lessons with our out of town visitors. BETH is a terrific dance teacher. She is one of the main reasons we keep returning. The bands that follow the dance lessons are always excellent.
Whether your hipster or not, this is your country music spot. They have this daily special there for $5 you get a 16 oz. Lonestar and a shot of Whiskey, you cant beat that. Its also a great mixture and tastes so good together. Live music and a nice outside patio with a really good food trailer inside the venue. I recommend you come to drink and dance at this place.
The White Horse is a place for all. A nice mix of old and new Austin under the same roof. You dance or kick back and watch. The two step lesson on the weekends is the best in the city. This is an East Side staple you gotta hit up if you’re on E 6th Street. And the taco truck (Bomb Taco) is awesome! This horse can trot, gallop, And two step.
This is hands down the best honky tonk in all of Central Texas. The bands showcase the most impressive talent and the bar staff will take care of you...no b.s. here! Just good ol fun!
The White Horse is a staple of Austins weird culture, but nonetheless its a fun country dive bar if you love to dance or people-watch. Theres pool, an outdoor beer garden section thats enjoyable weather permitting. They take away the tables and bar stools once the dancing starts later in the evening, but its a dark cozy place with reasonably priced drinks and guaranteed good time, or at the very least interesting.
Great vibe, looks like a movie set from a 1970s movie like Smokie and the Bandit. Cool old beer signs from the 70s. Unlike a 70s bar they have a great beer selection. Have a couple of pool tables inside and outside. Bartenders are great. Prices are better than what you might think for the neighborhood. Feels like a slice of old time Austin.
You would think with the connection of White Horse and Austin there’d be a little bit of inclusivity but unfortunately you me be wrong. I was the designated sober driver for the night and had no problem getting in. But the minute I hugged my partner inside security was on us in seconds claiming I was too f***ed up without reason. When my couple drinks in boyfriend tried to argue, the security had no response claiming me(sober) was too F****ed up to remain inside. Can’t believe this is still happening at a historic Austin establishment in 2022.
Overcrowded small dance floor. Got bumped into alot even at the edge of the room. The band was great though. Easy to hear the music through the whole venue. Taco truck out back smelled good.
Awesome place with mad character! Great to find real country music and great live performances. It would be hard to come here and *not* dance! Would’ve given five stars but for the bathroom.
