I hadn’t been to Smartbar in twenty years. I arrived at 11:30pm on a Saturday, and the place was empty. By 12:30am, it was filling up. When I left at 1am, there was an entry line wrapped around the door! The message? Go earlier if you don’t want to stand in line! Sweet bartender. Still cool as ever!
Dance all night! Everyone is so friendly! Great place to dance like no one is looking! There is a $30 cover + your drinks, so budget ahead. Have fun!
I recently visited Smartbar and was thoroughly impressed by the energetic atmosphere and great music. The DJs played amazing underground hits. The clubs modern and stylish decor, ample seating areas, and great bar staff contributed to the overall fantastic experience. I would definitely recommend Smartbar to anyone looking for a fun and exciting night out.
Sound system was weak, bar tenders were nice, layout was odd, and staff was too muchalso no free water? whackvery underwhelming club tbh; they let a line build even w a ticketed event bc they allow cover entry but the staff will look for any “excuse” to throw u or ur friends out when not on the dance floor so they can get more ppl in
Decent haunt on a night out, lineup was somewhat unremarkable. Out of the three xbars this one is the most consistently good. No creepy people, just other strangers looking to dance.
We had the pleasure of participating in the Raw Artists Arise art show. The venue is amazing. The Metro is on the top and it has two stories and Smart Bar in the basement. Great bartenders, amazing techno and house music. It’s located right next door to Wrigley Field. We had such a great experience! Can’t wait to go back
Had lots of fun in the event downstairs, I also was in the event earlier at Metro (where Botch was performing) and really loved the after-party after that concert. Guys complaining that this music is too loud dont know anything about house music in Chicagoland. Service was excellent, and the music was out of this world. Cant recommend anything other than a double-check on the soap dispensers at the bathrooms. They sometimes run out (not today, but sometimes), but otherwise, this place is perfect.
They would not accept my apple pay to get a 3 dollar bottle of fing water; then would not pour me a glass of free water. cant even describe how scummy this policy is. and from a harm reduction perspective, not offering water to crowds of drunk/otherwise high people is insane.
Really nice location, they played some tech house that wasnt at all bad. People were friendly and the atmosphere was vibey. I liked that they were open until 5am, most places close at 2am and for Europeans that can be weird. Sound system was on point, really loud and banging hard. Staff was friendly too and really Profesional. I dont think I have any complaints, I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun night with electronic music.
I have never felt the need to leave a negative review before, but this is not a safe space for women AT ALL. My friend had one beer and was surrounded and harassed by security where she was forcefully taken out of the bar. While I understand cutting someone off when it appears that they have had too much to drink, they charge customers for water, and security did not let my friend grab her coat which had all of her personal belongings. There is absolutely no justification for this volatile and unnecessary conduct. How can you justify surrounding a young woman, denying them the right to grab their coat (that has their phone, keys, wallet), and kicking them out? This behavior is completely unacceptable for anyone in a similar situation, and I hope that upper management can reevaluate how these matters are handled in the future.
Vibe still as good as it was when I was last here, also maybe 15-20 years ago. I wish yall had more than one water source though, as many clubs started doing it. That is an accessibility request I would hope the owners can consider. Grateful for what yall have done to keep Chicago house and techno alive and making it more qt and bipoc friendly over the years. 💜🤗💜💜💜
So now I understand why this place even has 3 stars. They report any bad review as spam instead of doing better. But I will re-iterate what was stated in my previous review. I have never seen an establishment care less about their patrons in my life. From the screaming and yelling of the disrespectful staff to their complete disregard for their patrons belongings its disgusting. I have been here only a handful of times with my friends and every single time something about this businesses disregard for decent customer service and simple human respect reminds me of why I hate coming here and honestly dont understand how they are even a business. Maybe they treat certain crowds differently. I was here a few weeks ago and they lost not 1, not two, but 4 of our coats. The next day each of us came back multiple times with not a single one of the coats were found. Which tells me they essentially threw them out immediately that night after closing. Its the constant disrespect for us as patrons spending $400 at minimum a night to be yelled and screamed at by the staff. In addition to their complete and obvious disregard for even our belongings that has me baffled as to how this place is even operational. They do say that staff behavior is indicative of management. And seeing as my last review was reported as spam instead of reaching out to me. I see why the old saying holds true
Went there on a Sunday. 20$ at the entrance. The music was a bit inconsistent but good enough. Was having fun until they kicked me out. Altogether good.
Music was meh. No menu for the bar no nothing, no idea how much youre gonna pay for what you drink. Mehhhhhh all the way.
Bartenders always held my purse for $$$. Well worth it while I worked the fuck out of the dance floor. Spent time In the dj booth using album covers.
This is not really an inclusive and safe space for women, Im sure the boys have fun there though!
I came here for the first time on Friday from out of town and it was an awesome experience from start to finish. The head of security was outside directing things and gave us some tips about the place. The line moved quick. The place had such a cool vibe and this would definitely be a place I would regularly hang out if I lived in Chicago! Once I was inside I asked another security guard for some help and he was so nice. I hung out up on the balcony for the night with a great view and the AC was flowing. Cant wait to visit here again next time Im in Chicago!
Great Club. Best Club experience I had in the US, coming from Berlin..!
I have honestly never seen an establishment care less about their patrons in my life. From the screaming and yelling of the disrespectful staff to their complete disregard for their patrons belongings. Im not sure if its just certain crowds they do this to but its almost sub-human treatment. The amount of money people spend here and the treatment disservice they provide is astounding. If the simple lack of decent treatment of patrons wasnt enough. There complete disregard for their patrons belongings its disgusting. Not one but 4 of my friends coats were lost from this place. Which tells me they essentially threw them away and wasted no time in doing so. HOW IS THIS PLACE EVEN A BUSINESS? Its litterally insane to me that they even have 3 stars on here.
I have been here twice so far and am really shocked to see it currently only has a 3.9 star average. This place rocks. It feels safe, I would be comfortable going here as a woman alone! The bathrooms are super disgusting but thats going to be the case at all venues well into the show, would be a huge improvement to have someone actively cleaning the bathrooms during the show but tbh I do not know any venue that does that. The music has totally slapped. I went to Berlin style hard techno show and a old school house show and both were amazing, for both shows the second set was the best set of the three. World class artists. Excellent sound system, wear earplugs! Small venue, not too packed and not too empty! Bring cash for the coat check. If you buy a bottle of water you can refill it in the bathroom, kinda gross but does the trick, you wont get sick or anything. All of the patrons have really dope style!
I’ve been coming here for the better part of a decade, so this is way overdue. There is no other club in Chicago that obviously and sincerely cares about their patrons and their safety. I have never felt beleaguered by crazy pricing and the staff is always helpful and sweet. Not to mention they get the best music to come through! Keep doing your thing smartbar, you rock.
Just don’t even bother. Security guards are actually the worst people in chicago. Never going back. Soundsystem sucks. Just go to Podlasie or a DIY spot instead ! Smartbar is never the move. They involved the cops because they thought my friends real government id was fake …… hands down the worst club with the worst staff. i promise you’ll have a better time anywhere else in the city. 3 strikes you’re out smartbar!!
No free water. Should be illegal (but I think it is legal). Music was good but I will never be returning because of this dangerous and insidious practice.
It’s my first time in Chicago and Smartbar was my favourite club of all the ones I went to. Friendly vibes all round. I came on Friday and Sunday and the latter was even more poppin’! Great music, soundsystem is sick and the bass hits hard. Hope to come back someday
They reeeeaaalllyyyyy need to start putting genres on this stuff. It was a trippy cool time when I went. Jungle drum n bass. It was a little overwhelming for a minute, when the drums were all relentless and stuff, but once she reset the vibe and worked her way back up, it was a fun little adventure. They take their time with it, its very different from traditional club music. And Im only pretty sure that thats normal there, but yeah. The A/C is literally unmatched and I appreciate that so much. Ill probably have to go again but I really wish I had a clue of what to expect without having to spend 30 minutes digging into the artists history which might not even exist in my experience. Literally all they tell you is the DJs names lol Id guess theres a large audience that likes to go to clubs on a whim, and their event awareness program doesnt support that very well. Pretty sure it was also a little (little) louder than it needed to be. Seems legit tho. Would definitely recommend investigating if youre planning something
Tonight I’ve never felt safer , I already know the staff does what they need to and to the best of their ability but when your staff goes out their way to make sure a chick is ok when she “solo”.I appreciate all you! Plus Natalie the bartender is amazing!!!
My experience was very positive. security was friendly and allowed reentry. the club is intimate, the sound engineering is top notch. my only complaint is that water wasnt very accessible without paying a ton of money. I cant wait to go back, though. outstanding club.
Went out with my SO looking to dance our socks off on a Sunday. Met some regulars & had an absolute blast. Venue is neat & resident DJs played solid sets. Friendly security, bartenders & locals. 10/10 would go again.
Bad energy overall. staff is way over the top imo…i pay $25 for a tangible ticket and i can’t step out of the venue and get back in?metro isn’t doing enough either. you’re telling me all you’re gonna do for pride month is a sleepy DJ? where’s the life? the performance? it’s a mf theatre…
NEVER GO HERE! NOT SAFE FOR WOMEN, SECURITY THINK THEYRE POLICE Not safe for women, filled to the brim with creeps on fridays and saturdays and they WILL put their hands on you. So expensive to get in just for the crowd to be 85% creepo men that just stand and stare. Can’t emphasize enough how AWFUL the security is. Horrible people and NOT keeping anyone safe. I wish I could give 0 stars
If you enjoy House Music this is you’re venue. With an amazing sound system in a concrete basement world class sound engineers. Bartenders are awesome. Security can be a bit rough around the edges but that’s their duty.
Staff was rude and confrontational. Didn’t like what I had on and so I went and changed and came back and they still turned me away. Tried to talk to them and be reasonable and calm and they just kept saying they didn’t care. Once I was turned away it was for good. All my friends were inside and we tried to reason with the staff respectfully and they just continued to be rude. This place used to be a safe haven for expression and fun on Sunday nights for the community and it’s now turned into a biased joint.
SmartBar is my home away from home! Love Queen w/Derrick Carter!!
First time I tought it was a fluke. But,This is the second time the doorman on Fridays doesnt allow us to come in after speaking Spanish. I rarely go for the racism card, but two night i have gone there with Spanish people, two nights i have been refused for no reason. Every other night i have gone with American people I have had no issue. We where not drinking or being loud.Would not recommend if your are latinxs.
Nice to visit Smart bar after a long time away. Decent music and vibe, but unfortunately they were unable to take credit cards this evening. Bit of a bummer and hassle to have to use the ATM.
Smartbar is THE spot in Chicago for educated music fans and casuals looking for a fun and safe time. Ive never been in a club that was as inclusive and welcoming as Smartbar. Everyone actually cares about the music and patrons here it is such a breath of fresh air from the River North experience and a shining beacon in Wrigleyvilles utterly frat boy and slurred atmosphere. Most of the bad reviews are from newcomers I see who waited in line and got upset they paid a cover etc. I understand it can be unwelcome but theres a reason Smartbar is busy. Most of the DJs that come here are the best of the best and world class so a wait is to be expect most nights.
Sweetest staff of any venue I’ve been to. Resident DJs are insanely good and they consistently book great talent. Not just another club- its roots run deep as one of the oldest house music venues. You can really feel the magic and love inside
Overall I had a great time at Smartbar/Metro. they had a $25 cover charge on a Saturday night which I found to be a bit over average for Chicago. Then I learned that they had a coat check, which was a few dollars, so i decided to bring my jacket in with me and stashed it. Their doorperson was neither friendly nor rude. They were busy and it was my first visit. The sound system was good and the DJs were very good. The drink prices were average,(for Chicago), $12 for mixers, however, when I ordered a water, the bartender was very friendly and he didnt charge me for it, (I had previously asked another bartender the price for bottled water and found it was $7), and they did have water fountains as well. The crowd was friendly and I never felt unsafe or any bad vibes from anyone. It was a good mixed crowd of ages and ethnicities. Metro was a large ballroom with techno and Smartbar was a separate basement space with a closer, (packed) crowd, a very good sound system and solid house Djs. Even though it was packed wall to wall, I never felt crushed, although it was very hot, and the crowd once again felt safe. Once bar-time was upon us, the staff moved us outward without being rude or pushy. I realized that I had left my beloved down jacket upstairs in the Metro ballroom and I made my way up to the entry-level where I found that the access to the ballroom was closed. I had a moment of panic as I realized that my jacket was most likely gone forever! Then to my great relief, I saw that the staff had, (thankfully), brought peoples garments to the bottom of the stairs, so I didnt freeze to death on my walk! Thank you Smartbar/Metro staff for bringing my jacket down and for the great night! I will be back.
Was really excited to see this place because I had heard such great things. Unfortunately my experience was anything but. We waited in line to get inside around 11:00 and were asked to pay a $25 cover. It was only once we got inside the building that we were told that Smartbar was full and they would not let us wait in the short line they had designated. We had to wait over an hour in the smoking area until there was enough room in line, and then another 30 minutes to get into Smartbar itself. If we had know it would be that long of a wait we wouldve gone somewhere else. Very deceptive. Music was good.
One of the worst run venues Ive been to from a front of house standpoint. Even people with tickets spend an hour in line, either because their staff is useless or because having a line looks good. Once youre in, its actually not half bad. The sound is good but they fog the place to oblivion so you cant see where the DJ is unless you really look hard. Bartenders are generally friendly, too. Just the front of house staff is completely disinterested and mostly incompetent. Go if someone you HAVE to see is playing, but show up no later than when they say doors open or youre not getting in before 2am. (tickets are available pre-sale for most shows but its limited to 100 at most so people think the show is sold out)
6 hours of free music on some of the best speakers in the world free with a metro wristband
All I have to say is after paying $16 for the smallest drink ever, after already paying a $25 cover to get in, I asked for a cup of water and was told I would have to purchase a bottle for $5, BUT they would give me a cup of ice at no charge. I guess I was just supposed to wait for it to melt…EDIT: Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. My main issue was with the fact that a cup of water, in a hot, dance club where lots of people are drinking excessively and moving around a lot, was not free. My point was that its just not right to do that to your patrons (and goes to other reviewers complaints about a lack of regard for patrons safety), especially after them paying relatively high covers (online/at door) and paying for expensive drinks. Becoming dehydrated when drinking poses a serious health issue, and pretty much every other bar/club I know of in the city will give you a cup of water for free. If you want to charge for an actual bottle, fine. But not for a cup.
This was the worst night of my life. I had gone to see the Wallows perform there. The Metro is much to small for the crowd that was brought in. There was probably 1000+ people in a 300 person max venue. I was pushed, grabbed, had my hair pulled, alcohol spilled on me, etc. I passed out, my friends were sobbing and having panic attacks. The people around me were in pain and suffering from heat exhaustion. An extremely intoxicated adult kept pushing my friends and I to try and get to the front (we were at around the second row from the stage), and I told him to stop, politely and professionally. He apologized and to make up for it, he ask to buy us drinks. We are all 16 and I told him we are underage. He then started yelling at us, blaming US for going to the Metro in the first place because its only 18+ when this was an all ages show. I had to get security multiple times and he was eventually taken out. When the Wallows came on, everyone was so packed together, nobody was allowed any movement, and everyone who wasnt part of the pushing and harassment issue were in immense pain. I love the Wallows, the people around me love the Wallows, my friends love them. However, around half way into the show, we were forced to push our way past to leave the venue. Its now a day after and Im extremely sick, my body is more exhausted than it has been, and Im generally miserable. I cant believe that I wasnt able to enjoy my time because of rowdy, drunk, full grown ADULTS, over crowding, and just straight up abuse. We payed 120$ for these tickets, just to have to leave part way through. Extremely disappointed in everyone involved for not acting on what monstrosities occurred during the show. The Metro employees need to recognize these issues. This was not an underground punk rock show. My friends and I, young teenagers had a chance of a lifetime stripped from any chance of being remembered as positive.
Best dance club in chicago!
Do not come here. The bouncers are insanely rude, aggressive, and outright bad at their jobs. They called Chicago police to a space where queer people are, risking the lives of everyone there. They called the cops after accusing my friend of having a fake ID. After the cops proved it was real, none of my friends were let in. They lost well over 200 $ that night because of their incompetence. Please fire your bouncers so that people who are not white men can feel comfortable and safe at this bar.
The employees are way too comfortable, more drunk and high than any of the guests. Saul said he is the owner and was very disgusting and threatening towards my party and myself. This place needs a complete employee wipe. Start new.
Goofy little asain said its his property an my party and I must leave even though we all know that goofy asain dont own this. Maybe 5 stars if they did an employee sweep, fire everyone and start new. Such rude disgusting, threatening awful incompetent staff especially at the door.
Music was great, unfortunately is the only place where they charge you a ridiculous high cover and water is denied if you don’t pay for it. My wife went to the bartender with a cup asking for water and he just told her “you have to fill that in the bathroom”. Bathrooms are a total mess, all gender which means that men and women have to pee in the same bathroom with minimum privacy. Don’t come to me with the “all inclusive” bull**t .
It was Saturday night and I just found out that Smartbar was among the best Nightclubs in the City. But, It was beyond the level of expectation.MUSIC - The DJ was repeating the beats. No electronic and No proper beats.DANCE FLOOR - People were just standing on the dance floor waiting for a song to be played which never happened. Some young crowd just left the venue after paying $15!! on entry.SOUND QTY - Pretty Good but needs more BASS!!I think the Crowd needs a Good MUSIC not a repetitive sequence of INSTRUMENTS played on a console. If WE are spending one night of our week to ENJOY then there should be an ENERGY! MUSIC! And PARTY!People should Smile, dance and enjoy their time.Even the DJ playing at the Booth was not even enjoying the MUSIC he was playing. Thats how bad it WAS!
This place is so good and the music was amazing... just wish they kept going past 5 am
I had the most amazing experience on my 24th birthday at this bar. So I decided on my 29th birthday I would drive 10 hours to relive the experience. I was denied access because I didnt have my vaccination card. My state doesnt allow online verification because they are to country to get with the times. Absolutely pitiful. I wish I was from a big enough city to allow an online copy.
Kelly is the best bartender in the city.Queen! Is a lifestyle. House music every Sunday to dance and be freee!
Big shout out to security for doing their job and making women feel safe. I was out with my friends, and this guy wouldnt leave me alone all night. Despite me saying Im not interested, and furthermore am married. He went as far as trying to get information about me from my friends and following me into the bathroom, it was truly terrifying. Finally, I called security on him and they kicked him out no questions asked. Even though his group of bros tried to make it seem like I was too drunk and making it all up - that it couldnt possibly be him. I appreciate security believing me.
Its seems the employees are the problem based on reviews. Yet they are still employed there, making false police calls and pretending ownership, acting like depressed goons, and talking about buying and selling narcotics while there is a line at the entrance, atleast while I was there. Pathetic. $25 to see the employees more lit than anybody there.
Always a good time and the bouncers are amazing. One bouncer bought me a water and a hot dog n saved my life. I’ll never forget you if you’re reading this
Came to this place because it has amazing reviews but I dont know how. The unisex bathrooms are really uncomfortable. It was pitch black and music was trying to be EDM but was really slow and nobody could dance. Theres hardly any girls and being one of the few really attracts a lot of awful guys. We were harassed and stalked all night. Drinks are way overpriced. The security people were really nice though.
Great place to dance and feel free. Everyone is polite and having a great time. Safe for women! (Safe for everyone really!)
I dont normally go to clubs, but thought this place was great! I went to Smart Bar to see James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem who was performing a DJ set there. The cover was reasonable for such a big name. The dance floor was full but not packed, and we had a great view since its a smaller place. I saw someone else describe this place as a come as you are dance club, and that is exactly how I would also describe it. It wasnt pretentious or flashy. Really enjoyed it and would go back.
Management of this bar is nowhere near up to the talent of the dj. After being accused of doing something that I did not do, I was kicked out while waiting for my friends in the bathroom. After paying a hefty entrance fee, I would expect service of an establishment to be somewhat reasonable but they wouldnt even let me go find my friend before trying to rush me out of the club.
Where to start? This place used to be amazing but honestly has gone quite a bit downhill nowadays... The bouncers are absolute a**holes and are about as pretentious as it gets. I have been coming here for like 2 years prior and have never gotten turned away and now they are extremely selective about who they let in. Hey I am just trying to enjoy your overpriced drinks and look at the beautiful fake women at your establishment, let me in. The music is just ok and seriously has gone downhill as well as the last time I got in I was disappointed. Also, a couple of times I went last when there was a cover charge the guy at the door said it was super busy.. You walk in and there are like 10 people there; definitely going downhill I hope they change a lot of things about this place, and they get 2 stars because it used to be an awesome place.
This place is just staffed by racist bouncers who use excessive force to remove sober POC. Ridiculous what I saw these bouncers do to this girl even going as far as lying about being punched to have the white male bouncers tackle this POC girl and carry her out. Do better. Never coming back here again and if you’re a POC coming here, be careful or find somewhere safer to go to spend your money.
I am a born resident of chicago & even in this year 2022 i’ve never felt so discriminated against. i was dancing having a great time minding my own business until i used the bathroom & was greeted by bouncers to kick me out of the place for what??? i have tats on my face, if you’re going to have all gender bathrooms bc u feel u have to by law ,why throw out people who are genuine at heart? get your staff in check bc it’s bullshit👿
By far the worst venue in Chicago. I already disliked this venue but the Battles show this Friday was awful. They forced me to check my empty bag. I went out to lock up a friends bike and the guy threatens to kick me out if I come back in smelling like smoke. When I do try to get back in the bouncer seriously used an earpiece to relay the front desk. It was like a prison! Security harassed the pretty tame crowd throughout the show. They treat their customers like cattle and criminals. If I can help it Ill never go there again. Bands need to realize there are much better medium sized venues to play at that treat people with respect. Truly horrible.
Deep and dark music in the basement. Great Soundsystem, crowd normally has good vibes and always some kind of a cheap drink special to keep you going. Just know that all bathrooms are unisex so just suck it up and get used to it.
20dollars admission fee. And most of drinks are 7.There was NO dress code. But was cool and nice atmosphere. .. bartender was cool.. hmm...dance floor was so dark so i couldnt see anything and narrow..
I went to see speedy j first time me being to smartbar life time Chicagoen and techno house lover that use to go to warehouse raves back in the 90s ...smartbar you lived up to your reputation I had the best time in a long time you made this 40yr old feel young again all I needed was my glowsticks.. be back freaking best time in decades
The security was pompous and just completely rude. I will never go here again! They had no answers for me when they decided that I couldnt enter the venue because I attempted to toss an empty bottle OUTSIDE, before checking in and before I entered. There was a fat guy in particular who wanted to feel like he was doing some great security work but was just unreasonable. I shouldve known better than to allow this venue to take my money. Once again, do not go here if you dont want to be mistreated or scammed by a wannabe security team.
Great music, great DJs, great sound, but... they change the guy at doors. Now there is a completely unprofessional guy that spend his miserable life trying to impose the authority with his body. You will recognize him since he is the tallest one and the only guy that speak allowed. Usually the people that are at the smart are very relaxed and are there just to listen some good music. I have never seen an hubbub there. But this guy suffers of attention-seeking behavior. He is very irritating since you can see that he is excited to exercise his mania of grander.Im so disappointed since Smart Bar used to be a very nice place to go with relaxed people and good music..but I will never never go again until this guy is there. I want to have fun, not deal with the problems of the people.
Major disappointment to any house music fan. Wish they would embrace their roots instead of playing Jersey Club
Smart bar, dumb bouncers. While accompanying a friend for her uber to the exit, I was taken and brought out for literally no reason. After asking the two bouncers outside and receiving no answer, I insisted and they called other two bouncers, including the one who brought me out. Again I asked for an explanation, always trying to be the kindest possible even if they didn’t deserved it, but they had no better reason than “we decided so”. They perfectly understood that they’re were totally wrong, but not to admit that, they started inventing one excuse after another. First, my pupils were too large and I was “intoxicated”, then after I passed their “tests” with the torch they changed reason, over and over again.Log story short, 50 minutes of discussion, 4 bouncers, and they weren’t able to provide a reasonable answer.I’m so upset to give this place one star because it is my favorite place in Chicago. The music is the best and the ambience is great. Not to mention the sound system, amazing. So 5 star to the place. So sad how dumbness can ruin an evening.
My favorite night club in the city. Old school Chicago house music vibes. Amazing sound system and the crowd here is usually vibing.
My favorite club in the city. It lacks much of the pretentiousness and meat market feeling that many other clubs in the city have. Devoid of any bottle service foolishness and the crowd that brings, smartbar patrons seem to be there for the music. The funktion one sound system is unsurpassed and shakes the floor when used right. Drinks are not cheap but its a nightclub so no surprise there. The photo booth is a nice way to create a memorable moment.
I have been going to smartbar for years but it’s really gone downhill. There’s never coat check available and many of the staff are incredibly rude.
I can see how this place might be fun on a normal day, but their New Years Eve party was chaotic and frustrating. I got the impression it was their first time running that kind of event.Preordering tickets, we still waited an hour in zero degree weather to get in. The line divided into people who had tickets and people who didnt have tickets - the person in our group who didnt have a ticket got in faster AND cheaper. Thats right - the tickets preordered were $42.50 after fees. If you bought your ticket at the door it was $40.Coat check filled up instantly. If I had to estimate Id say 1/2 the people there were able to check their coats at the door. Normally not a huge deal, but again this was NYE and we were in zero degree weather, so theres no way we could have come without a coat. We ended up piling them on the floor and it added a certain amount of stress to the night to keep an eye on them when we were on the dance floor.Exiting the place, they were yelling at people for stepping over the rope at the door, but literally the only other option was to walk through the line of people getting in. It seems like something that should have been thought of ahead of timeWe had fun in spite of this, so 2 stars instead of 1 for that.
Best consistent Sunday night nightlife you can find! Cheap cover, cheap drinks, awesome eccentric crowd, respectful and smart security, and amazing Chicago house music on some of the best speakers in the city. Not to be missed!!!
Best club in chicago for House Music and DANCING. Not bottle service. If that’s your jam you’ll have to check elsewhere.
Had a great time dancing there, fun place and the DJs are always amazing, but I lost my card there and have had a helluva time trying to contact them through any medium. Living so far away makes getting back a hassle. Wish they were more attentive to messages or calls.
On a Friday night in Wrigley it was hard to find seats, but that goes without saying. Staff was definitely fast, professional, and the crowd was pretty decent. Not too loud. Late night food across the street
This club claims to have all gender washrooms, but they are 75% urinals. Get rid of all the urinals and put toilets in stalls in their place would make the washroom truly a gender..My girlfriend and I ended up sharing the only stall in the room of urinals in the washroom and then got kicked out for sharing.Speaking of which, staff need to be clearer in identifying themselves and not do things like demand the stall be opened while someone is peeing in there and then throw people out for not knowing who they are or complying with their unreasonable orders. My girlfriend felt violated, and as a transgender woman, I felt further marginalized. The staff laughed at my friend when she was in distress after we were escorted out without so much as a word about what alleged infraction occurred. This business needs to do more work in order to be a place of Pride. I was a visitor to this city, my friend is from here. Neither of us will return again.
This place has some sick shows most weekends- the bouncers are nice and the bathrooms are gender neutral. The drinks are priced regularly, the dance floor can get crowded but the space is large.
Lovely place, ive had zero issues getting in or with the bathrooms as others have suggested. go if you want to just be yourself, inclusive vibes all around. the only way i see it not being inclusive is if you yourself are the problem
Oh man the Hispanic possibly Native American guy that works there is Sooooo good at doing sound. My friend is a drummer that played in a local band there - (he has a terrible sounding kit). I dont know how he did it, but everything was so punchy and clear! Amazing work! Also, the monitor guy that works there is super nice! I met him at the Gman bar after the show and he really impressed my sister.
Non pretentious, different from the clubs with douchy vip bottle service type of vibe. The sound system is excellent. People go here to enjoy the music and to dance. Pretty simple.
One of my favorite places in Chicago. Home of house music on the Northside. Staff are great. Cant say enough good things.
Great place for good EDM and house music and one of the best places to go dancing in the city. Keep in mind: if you need water while there, for some reason they don’t offer cups of tap water, you have to buy bottled water.
You paid 15 dollars to listen to the same music during the whole night. THE WORST DJ EVER! Not to mention, the place was empty, drinks are expensive and the staff (especially the cashier) wasnt friendly. I went there yesterday (01/24/14), and I regret going there. Dont waste your time, go somewhere else.
Great venue, extremely rude security. Had to go out to put more money in the meter. I very politely asked if I could I could do so. A fat security guy, in a very rude way, barked there was no reentry but let us go anyway. When I came back he swore at me. If you like paying for overpriced drinks and being treated rudely this is the place for you.
The best dance venue in Chicago. The bass is booming, the crowd is active and into it. A sensory overload. A tad on the expensive side when it comes to drinks, but the ticket prices are inexpensive so it balances it out in the end.
The only club I go to in Chicago and I feel no need to go anywhere else. Consistently incredible music, people, and overall vibe. If you go to clubs for the music, look no further.
This is one of the better places to listen to electronic music in the city. The setting is more intimate than any super club, and usually the music is better, too. DJs here spin things meant for a more underground crowd, so youll hear minimal techno and deep house instead of club progressive and brostep. A lot of old warehouse party kids come here now that theyve grown up. Youre also much less likely to find Mac-tapper DJs here, which is a good thing.
Was a regular patron here for years, spent many weekends and dollars here, sadly things have gone in the wrong direction, much like the rest of Chicago. Definitely not inclusive to the non-superficial, also still requiring you to show your papers! Unbelievable.
My favorite place to go to for underground house and techno. Very chill atmosohere, no dress code. If you are looking to go clubbing, Id recommend trying a place like The Mid, Enclave, Board Room, etc.
The bouncer has a god complex and is a serious racist. we paid $31 for each ticket, and could not go back into the bar only because the bouncer said no. No refund, no apology, no explanation, but he rather threatened us to call the police. Why do i need to be treated like trash?
Gosh I love this place. The sound system THUMPS the night I was there the drinks were absurdly cheap.Go here for varieties of music. No pretentious vibes here. Just great music, Midwest friendliness, and a swirling light floor to have fun to.
Security falsely accused us of having done “hard drugs all night” despite us actually having just arrived there and then proceeded to kick us out. All of our attempts to reason with them failed as they continued to spout out lies and ignore our complaints. Don’t go here, the staff can’t be reasoned with.
I have been to more shows at Smart Bar/Metro than at all other music venues in Chicago combined. It is considered one of the top 10 nightclubs in the US for good reason. Funktion One soundsystem, great bookings, and a staff that is less douchey than any other legally legitimate nightclub in the city. They cover almost the full spectrum of electronic music, letting lots of local crews throw parties there. Weeknights are great because only the music heads come out, but you have to watch out for douchebaggery on weekends because it is in Wrigleyville.
Legendary Chicago bar and nightclub! Awesome venue for live music. Personally have seen too many bands and dj sets over the past 35 years, to count
Ive never made smart decision in Smartbar. With that said, its great. Like the Metro above it, its a great place to see up and coming DJs before they start selling out stadiums and areas and are headlining festivals. As well as staying true to its Chicago roots. Plenty of space to dance and people actually dance as well. Not just dry humping on the dancefloor but still some do, (its in Wrigleyville and open late after all those 2 am bars close) Staff are great. everybody is welcome. great vibe you wont find anywhere else. Where the focus is on the music and DJ and not on being scene or getting bottle service.
Nice place. As usual the guy/girl ratio is of balance as in most clubs. The music is repetitive yet danceable, and the better acts come out later into the night.
Went to see the KONGOS play there - it was such a great venue! The security staff was so nice and drinks were great. Definitely worth stopping by for some good music and entertainment!
If you like trance, electro, house or dubstep you should go to this place. you have to be aware of what is the cover, depends on the day you go. it is a very dark enviroment. the djs are awesome and you are going to see crazy people dancing alone.
Weird af experience. Dark and smoky atmosphere which was cool. Music was repetitive and it seemed like everyone was on something to enjoy it. Nobody was hyped they just stood and vibed
My body my choice! This is a fascist establishment! Never thought I would see music loving liberals be against bodily autonomy. What happened to house music being a unifying force?
QUEENS night on Sundays is the best with EDM and variety of creative humans in various ages and sizes (LOL...Queens can be super tall). Unisex Lounge is the place to hang out with plenty of seats, lights, and intelligent conversations. 😀 Say hello to the fabulous host and star (on posters), LADY JOJO.
Best place to go out dancing. Friendly security. Gender neutral washrooms. Zero tolerance for harrassment, homophobia, trans phobia and the best sound and music.
Metro is the classic, intimate music venue upstairs (proper stage, floor space with an upstairs balcony) and SmartBar is the underground bar/nightclub downstairs. Both local and big name bands come through Metro, while bar and dance nights go on downstairs, including the notable party Queen, on Sundays.
Smartbar is by far the best dance club in chicago. It has beena =round for thirty years for good reason. Handsdown the best sound system in the city, make the amazing djs booked sound like they never have before. The crowd is not douchey like most clubs in the loop.
They only host the best parties, especially Queen (LGBTQ party every Sunday Night) A must go if youre ever in the city!
Great sound and great music, but could seriously benefit from a stricter door policy to keep out the techno tourists and Wrigleyville bros. Make Smartbar gay again.
Very unorganized. We bought tickets in advance for an event, but the people who do not have tickets went ahead of the line. It does not make sense..
I went there to watch city and colour. The beer is over priced and it gets WAY too crowded. At least a 4th of the people there had no view! The way the inside is set up is designed poorly. Will avoid this place for shows in the future unless its just really cheap. Disappointed.
If youre not coming here to dance, you might as well go home. Im not sure that I was select it as a place to start the night, or even for the entirety of the night. But, after a few drinks and with you and your friends feeling good, this is a place to be.
Great dance spot with a medium sized dance floor and second room for bar chills. Derrick Carter and mark Farina often play here, and move your body so night long.
Shouts out to QUEEN for being the radiant beacon of light that Chicago needs. The barn rules, and every other club in boystown drools (in comparison, u do u).Lucy is a deity, the residents turn it out every week, staff is lovely. 10/10
Mind you I was standing right by the speaker so I may have just been deafened and dumb, but I really enjoyed the venue. If you come late you can still get close enough to the stage.
The security are rudeWaiting in line to get inside and when you get in there you have to wait again for more than 30min to get to smart barMusic sucksAfter 3 triesWill never go there again.
The kindest people work there. I have anxiety and was treated with the utmost respect of them understanding my conditions. Wish everyone was like this when Im able to get out. Highly recommend
Good space.Friendly vibes.Water only $3.
I saw the MC5 here. They have some great shows that no one else has and when they do you got to go. Ive also seen the Ramones and Pere Ubu that was a long time ago
The best club for Electronic music worldwide!
My absolute favorite place to go out in Chi. The music is always on point and the crowd is always good vibes. Goes late night too!
OMG this place is absolutely amazing! Everyone dances and the the music is so mesmerizing. I could dance there for every. And the cover it pretty decent!
Always great music. Fantastic sound system (Funktion One). No frills. Bar. Music. Space to dance. Just how I like it.
Its always an absolute pleasure to dance here. The people, the music, and the staff are THE BEST in Chicago!
Well where should i start if you want to have a good time with your with your friends and want to have a good birthday this is the place to go they play good music is good they play only hit songs check it out :-)
The club ambience was nice but somehow music was bad and it was not attracting us to dance. They spoiled our evening.
Requires me to “show my papers” to enter. I have a medical exemption from taking the experimental “vaccine” so apparently I can’t go to a show even though I have antibodies. PLEASE don’t give them your money!!
Best club music in chicago. not very expensive either. Come here on thursday for good deals on drinks.
Terrible experience, I was denied entrance (never experienced that before) and given no explanation. As I see in other reviews, the staff is horrible, skip this place
Soulless generic EDM that only people who are drunk or high out of their minds would dance to. unwelcoming staff. napoleon complex manlet doorman.
Crowded but for a reason.The sound...The music...The atmosphere...All amazing!
The sound system is unreal. When you realize those huge boxes, as tall as a person, are funktion one speakers, and Derrick Carter starts playing, you get lost in music.
Smells and feels like a basement. doorman was rude to other customers as well made me cringe...probably wont go back
Cool venue. The sound was pretty good except vocals are hard to hear if you are in the middle of the stage.
Always a pleasure to go to Smart Bar awesome sound system and there weekly Sunday Queen Night is great!
Such rude disgusting unprofessional staff its insane they have a job anywhere, low standards. Embarrassing staff.
Excellent sound system; Queen is one of my favorite queer dance partiesof All Time
The worst place you can go
Im not into techno music. Searched for best clubs in Chicago and this was one of the first ones apparently but not for me.
Great club for electronic music. A little expensive if you ask me. Wish the djs were a little better.
Very good concert i went to. Staff was friendly as well
Cool spot that attracts some amazing talent from all across the globe. Youll be happy to meet some interesting and chilled out people here!
Nice place, music could be better and yes they are open Sundays.
Nice small venue. Saw Chevy Metal here. Could see the band no matter where I was.
Great music, nice people, even nicer staff, cheap drinks, interesting layout
Came to chicago with my friend joel. had a fun time and caught uo a bit. he’s from seattle
Always has good drink specials, and always has good music. I recommened goin here at least once.
Every time I come here, the line is unnecessarily long as if they are doing it for the looks. The actual bar is pretty cool though.
Probably the sickest underground club in Chicago for 30+ yrs now... This is a legendary spot for 90s rave kids ...
Nice venue but bring cash. They dont accept cards. Other than that, very nice.
One of the best electronic dance music venues consistently for years.
Fun place great shows... ask before you go downstairs if anyone is there!
Funktion one sound system, great bar, great vibe and safe for all who are open minded.
Great place to hear a live DJ, and literally dance until you sweat.
Smartbar is one of the least pretentious clubs in Chicago. Good music leads to good dancing.
Not very lively and gave us so much trouble getting in. Bouncers were condescending and sexist.
This is a complete dive bar the bartenders dont know.how serving people within a 30mins time frame
I’ve never paid SO much cover for such TERRIBLE music
Worst bar I’ve ever been to in my life I wish I could give it negative stars I wouldn’t take my worst enemy there terrible service and aggressive environment
I’d give zero stars if I could. The security staff is very rude!
Always have a good time! best neighborhood late night spot by far
Avoid on holidays, to many old people but a great party any other time
Rae house/techno venue that goes way back
Sign on door says open until 2am. Staff turned us away and said they shut early. Manager was rude when I questioned staying open until 2am.
Decent music, a bit louder than necessary though, and very expensive drinks.
The most OG spot in Chicago house music other than the warehouse
Great music, love the queen party on sundays, househead!
Obscure for hard techno and Queen for queer house/disco
This is my favorite club in my favorite city. Long live Smartbar!
This place is not even open!!!! You go on google it says one thing, you go online on the website and it says another thing!!
Not classy, not posh, under-prepared staff, and a distaste for service dogs.
Man. Its been 20 minutes and theyre still playing this song....
God is good.
A bit up tight but pretty with good drinks
Great bar to come and wait for the show to start at Metro.
I went on a Thrusday and it was almost empty. $10 ticket wasted
Best dance club in the city hands down.
Great place to enjoy house music. Sundays QUEEN!
Classic Chicago nightlife spot. Checkout Metro club upstairs
This bar has stunning entertained value and socks with rhinos and chimp
Great place for drinks and live music.
The venue was fabulous. Staff was courteous.
I love smartbar! the music is legit! and good prices too!
Best bartenders in town!!!
Weird music, I guess I had bad luck yesterday :( I danced a lot, though...
Mostly gays inside and nowhere is saying that..
Best club in the world!
Great Drinks....fab staf...awesome place
Great dark diveish bar with great DJs
Great venue just get there early.
Dont go if you dont want to dance
