3.33/5 Was this place beautiful and exciting at first glance? Absolutely. Would I ever dine here again? Absolutely not.The food was decent and came out fairly quick. However, the service and pricing dont justify a return. We were a table of 4, progressively ordering drinks throughout our time and based on the servers attitude, it felt like we were a nuisance. The only time the server seemed to smile was when we asked for the check. We all gained the sense that the place wanted to kick us out after an hour of being there. If youre going to force a gratuity, please hire people that actually deserve it. On the flip side, the bartenders were down to earth so youre better off sitting at the bar.The only record this place gets in my book is being the first to charge for ice (pictured). Seriously. I didnt even realize its legal to charge for frozen water, but here we are. Not to mention, $24 for a cocktail that barely has alcohol in it is a disgrace. Go elsewhere.
Was not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. Gabrielle was our server, and she was on point from the start.Appetizers were fire. The wagyu beef tacos were hands down the best appetizer. The bang bang shrimp was also amazing. The wagyu dumplings were ok, not bad, just not as good as the tacos.Chilean seabass was OUTSTANDING. Very simple flavors that popped. The lamb chops were PERFECT!!!Dessert was ok, just didnt stand out. This would be the only course I would work on improving.
This was my first time at PAO and overall it was a great experience. The food was wonderful, we had the lo mein noodles, waygu, filet, and shrimp appetizer. The atmosphere was upbeat and lively, although it did get loud around 9 pm and it made it difficult to hear the person next to me.Pros:-Good food-Fun atmosphere-Good serviceCons:-Expensive food and drinks (a 20% gratuity is applied to your bill)-Loud music after certain hours-Limited parking around the area (we had to pay $15 for valet)
I love PAO. The atmosphere is great. The drinks are strong but really good. I usually always get the lamb when I’m there but literally everything is delicious. I went with a group of 5 picky friends and they all loved it. Great for date/girls night out. Highly recommend you try the Japanese Caesar salad and pan asian butter cake.
Pao serves up some seriously delicious dishes, no doubt about it. The decor is nice, but it lacks that inviting feel youd hope for in a restaurant. And charging a 20% service fee for just two people at a small table? Not cool.In short, if youre all about the food, go for it. But dont expect stellar service or a cozy atmosphere.
I wasn’t too fond of the club vibe while I had dinner. Lighting was very dim but the little lamps provided at the table were helpful. The Drinks were great! Food, mostly appetizers were very tasty. My entree was dry though our friend had the lamb and OMG it was deelish!! If I come back I’m definitely ordering that! Staff is very friendly and helpful, meal delivery was fast.
I will start by saying this place has a lot of potential. Inside has beautiful decor and love the low lighting and the lamp they bring to the table. Not sure how I felt about after a certain time it’s almost a club feel with r&b and rap playing but I vibed with it up until a big party behind me got bottles brought to the table with the sign and sparklers thought that was a bit much and overboard it’s still a restaurant at the end of the day. However the server I didn’t catch her name she didn’t tell me and I forgot to grab the receipt. She’s white brown or black hair but she gives terrible and I mean terrible service. I have worked in the service industry for years serving tables in fine dining restaurants and just casual dining and wouldn’t expect this service at a coney. The server sat us at a table with menus however did not bring water for awhile or the light for the table so we’re stuck using our phone flashlight to read the menu. She comes back with glasses. no water just the glasses 8-10 min later then water another 5-8 min later almost 20 min no water no exaggeration. She then asks if we’ve ever dined here we say no and then says “well let me break down the menu.” She then says “the drinks are on the left and food is on the right” aww gee thanks only took me 20 min to figure that out thanks for the “breakdown of the menu” we ordered 3 drinks. The “Mandalay Bay” which was pretty good the “Dusk till dawn” decent and “the katana”(pictured below) best cocktail I’ve had in awhile I will say. However it took another 20 min to get the drinks. I also will say it was not to busy in there for this type of wait time. There was one large party of maybe 14 and 3 other tables but not overwhelmingly busy. Finally we place our order. Truffle fries were good a little to much truffle to the point where it’s like eating a powdered donut your hands table cloth etc are covered in white powder. The chive aioli is amazing. We got the octopus also very good the aioli for that is amazing as well and the dish looks elegant. Plated like a 5 star restaurant would. We then got the entrees the Mongolian beef and Szechuan salmon. Entrees took forever to come out salmon was mid. The salmon has like no sides just salmon on a plate with aiolis. Whatever glaze on it is not enough given and the orange aioli or whatever comes with it is garbage. The Mongolian beef sauce is amazing sweet but not to sweet with a little spice. The beef was over cooked. Black around the edges and tough because of it. I asked would she prefer the Mongolian beef or sweet and sour chicken she looked at the menu to see the price and said “beef” since it was more expensive and gratuity is already included which I don’t mind the gratuity being included I’ve worked in the restaurant industry it’s hard out here but cmon give me at least decent service to back up the 20%. I expected her to walk me thru each dish as to why it was better etc as I would or any “fine dining” establishment would. Dessert was a s’more brownie. It was amazing. Reservation was at 9 and we didn’t leave until almost midnight. Thank god I didn’t have anything planned because it was such a long service. Overall I would come back just tighten up on a few things and please coach that server. This was on Tuesday 2/6 I don’t want her in trouble because it could just be a bad night but please coach her it was absolutely terrible service worst I’ve ever had in my life especially when it’s so small upstairs so you can see her literally doing nothing. If she was truly busy I’d get it but it almost felt personal as to why the service was so bad.
Pao was absolutely amazing. This was my partner and Is first time ever here and the atmosphere, service, and food were phenomenal. The music and energy literally boosted our moods even more. I loved how our server Gabrielle was attentive and kept checking in on us even with the food and drinks and after. She was a really good server to us. The energy of this place makes you happy and instantly makes you just want to dance. The ambiance made everyones experience that much better. Please give our server a raise because she was so nice and helpful. The DJ is 🔥🔥🔥
PAO Detroit: where the ambiance is as extra as the bill. The atmosphere is stunning, but it can quickly morph into a deafening nightclub of the bottle-girls-and-sparklers variety if youre there too late, resulting in an awkward staring contest for unsuspecting diners. The top-hits-radio-esque music was loud enough to drown out any attempt at conversation, even for those seated on the first floor (aka us) (top floor diners might need to send PAO their hearing loss medical bills). I might have found the music more entertaining if I couldve snagged another drink. While its undeniably Instagram-worthy, and there were some good bites, the service left us tapping our fingers, our table sandwiched uncomfortably between another partys and a busy walkway. The food, unfortunately, fell short of the hype and the price tag.In all fairness, we visited close to NYE 23, and the place was packed – a possible explanation for my experience.Ultimately, PAO ended up being a one-and-done experience for us, and Im surprisingly okay with that.
This place is very nice and has a great atmosphere. The vibe is great and the music played by the dj were all good. The service from the waiters was very good and they were all nice and friendly, especially Gabby. The food was really good, from what all me and my friends got. We thought it was good, especially the shrimp and the truffle fries.
I went on Friday evening with one of my friends. I wasnt aware how fancy this place was and felt under dressed. We were lead to a table upstairs and it was pretty quiet up there. We both oredered cocktails and they were amazing. The food was excellent as well as the service. The owner/manager kept on checking on us to see if we were doing ok. They do add 20% tip to your tab. Crab Langoon and the scallops were my favorite.
The atmosphere was like a VIP, retro nightclub fitted with a disco ball and dj stand. We were there as soon as it opened, and the heat was a bit strong but began cooling off as the dinner went on. I ordered the Tiger Lily for my drink and was very satisfied, it was nice, fruity, and light. We decided to get a couple items and share with the table as it was the recommendation from the waiter. We ordered the brown butter Brussels, creamy Rock shrimp, szechaun salmon, miso Chilean seabass, The dd tacos, the 48 hour lamb lollipops, wagyu beef eggrolls and the Katsu chicken.Things to pass on, The katsu, I felt like it was a glorified fried chicken with little flavor. Another, would be the eggrolls, they were expensive cheeseburgers. Things to not pass on, the lamb lollipops, they were delectable with the right amount of char and served with dollops of sauce. I would also recommend ordering the Brussels, the confit garlic was an amazing addition. The remaining items were good but nothing that stood out as much as the lamb and Brussels. For dessert, we ordered the pan-asian buttercake and the toasted ginger s’mores. The butter cake was terrible, it was incredibly dry and had very little berry compote to make the cake salvageable. On the other hand, the smores was delightful. The chocolate mousse was very rich but was countered by the toasted marshmallow. Overall, this was a nice place to dine when near the fox but not sure if l would pick this over other places around.
This place is amazing set in a theater back in ancient times a lot of thought has got into the atmosphere and Stella the waitress/hostess was incredibly kind and patient - answered all our questions. The food was amazing - such creative choices. I would highly recommend this to any local or visitor alike
Really nice staff - customer service from everyone we encountered was A1. Food has unique flavors but was really good. Fresh, high-quality ingredients too. The person I was with is a picky eater and even they loved it. Will definitely return. The ambience is dark and moody- great for a date night or dinner with friends. they have valet but no parking lot, so be prepared to park on the street or in a nearby lot for $20. they have a lower dining room level with a bar and an upper level with more seating that overlooks the ground level. there’s also a DJ area for when they play music, which I believe is after 9 PM and on Thursdays and Sundays. The pricing is slightly expensive but not too bad. For just two people we ended up spending around $150. A 20% gratuity is automatically put on the bill.overall, it was a good experience. I would’ve given this place 5 stars if the food didn’t take so long to come out. definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch, dinner, or hanging out.
Outstanding service … Bella was incredible: very attentive and helpful navigating the menu. Very tasty cocktails, especially the fig old fashioned. I WILL be back for the Wagyu short ribs again… absolutely delicious!
PAO was a delightful experience for my Birthday dinner. The hostess made sure to accommodate our party and we were seated upstairs. The pork belly, truffle fries, mushrooms fried rice and sesame chicken dishes were all a HIT!! The restaurant itself is beautiful, the lighting and music really set the tone. I highly recommend this restaurant for a group dinner or a date night.
I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I visited on a random Tuesday after work, and guess what? They have an entire section dedicated to Tuesdays called “Luxe Tuesday”.I ordered the “Lobster Trio” which was at Market Price (Blackened, Fried and Lemon Herb Baked) – it was amazing!I felt like I was in a chic restaurant buried in Asian culture. The bartender himself came to our table and took our orders. He even made us something special based on what our taste buds wanted at the time.
Visited PAO for Valentines Day. Great new spot for date night. The ambiance was very nice. We did have them change our table because it was in a very tight spot. Maybe this was due to the increased crowd for the holiday. Food and drinks came out quick. Truffle fries and creamy shrimp were delicious. I did have one BIG issue with my meal. I ordered the waygu steak, which was $100. The steak itself was cooked to perfection. However, when youre serving prime steak like this, you should trim the excess fat. If i had 5 strips, I had one strip of fat. I was a little upset about that. That is the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars ✨️. Outside of that, I had a great time at PAO and I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for a good night out.
Went here for a birthday party valet is 40 to 50 we had like 15 people waitress and other bus personnel were great. The shrimp was awesome the tacos are really good. Peppers are solid. The fish was good and I dont like fish lamb chops are good a little overcooked but still pretty solid drinks are great. The bday Sunday thing is a bit of a mess ice cream macaroons and about a billion other things all thrown into a trough looking bowl with sparklers.over all service was great and food was fairly solid but not entirely worth the price in my opinion and music is so loud you cant hear the person next to you without yelling at each other.overall for sure more of a club than a restraunt but not a bad experience just different from what I was expecting but not bad for sure check it out
Great food! It was a fun place to have a late dinner on Saturday night. Cat was a great bartender and gave us the best suggestions for food. The surf and turf with pork and shrimp is worth a try if it’s still on the specials menu.
Much potential but lots of improvement opportunities. On the positives, the room had a cool vibe and the menu was interesting. Some of the dishes were well executed. Rice balls, tuna, octopus and quinoa were all good. But some of the dishes were really off. Champagne was totally flat and the shrimp in the spring rolls were cold. The complex flavour profiles were nice but execution and quality control need improvement
Came in a few weeks ago and it seemed very mediocre for its prices. The truffle fries were way over salted, to the point where we just left them. The shishito peppers were rather bland and it wasn’t until a few minute until we realized that the gochujang paste was at the very bottom. The crab rangoon was tasty. Cocktails were decent, however 30$ did seem a bit pricey when I just wanted a basic margarita with mezcal. I ordered the chicken katsu and that I do recommend as well it was absolutely delicious.Service was okay, but it did seem as though the server was doing the bare minimum for good service. She came to our table and would take our orders, but never once refilled the waters. We had to ask around every time we just wanted a refill. We were only one of two tables there so would have appreciated if she could have been a little more attentive instead of just talking to the host the entire time we were there.Ambiance of the restaurant was pretty.Overall, I recommend coming here as long as you don’t have the highest expectations and it’ll be a good time.
My brother and I went here a couples weeks ago for dinner before going to see The Lion King at the Detroit Opera House. The staff was friendly and helpful. I asked my waitress for a drink recommendation, something sweet and fruity, and she nailed it. I wish I remembered what the drink was called so I could recommend it.Food wise I was quite happy as well. The only thing I didnt particularly like was the mushroom dumplings, which is a shame because I usually love mushroom centric dishes. But in this case the mushroom filling was under seasoned, which brought down the whole dish. Another thing I want to note for people who are looking to try the charred octopus, the way the dish is cooked brings out a rather pungent smell and distinct favor in the octopus that wouldnt otherwise be present in say an octopus salad. Just something to take into consideration before ordering. My absolutely favorite dish of the evening was the Ahi Tuna Nachos, so definitely recommend those.All-in-all, I enjoyed my experience.
PAO Detroit is a top of the line dining experience. The service was amazing. The atmosphere gave off a really cool vibe. It felt like the entire restaurant was a VIP section of a swanky nightclub with electronic beats pulsating in the background. The food was very delicious. I ordered the 48 Hour Lamb chop lollipops. They were seasoned and grilled perfectly medium. They give you 3 double cut chops so its like you receive a generous portion of 6 lamp chops for a reasonable price. Ill definitely be coming back here for sure.
Service was awesome! They surprised us for my finances bday and the food was delicious! Crispy rice balls were surprisingly better than I thought they would be, and the Ora king salmon was fantastic. Definitely not my typical type of vibe, but a fun time for a large group on a weekend! Ali and the staff were all great and so accomodating!
Went in on a weekend night… as Detroit’s Dining scene can get pretty busy I checked online for a reservation, but they had every slot available so I didn’t bother with a reservation. When we got there the host tried to steer us to the bar, but when i mentioned all the available tables as well as reservations online she sat us at a 2top. The original ornate ceiling & overall architecture is gorgeous. I wish the owners accented on the history of the building rather than trying to make it modern. Lots of silver/blk, but I feel like they were leaning into the “Asian fusion”… I digress! Our Server Fiona was super friendly, attentive & informative. We Started with a purple vodka drink “From Dusk till Dawn” (love this movie) it was really nice & refreshing. Started with apps the Crab Rangoon & Paos version of Elote. The Rangoon’s were good & definitely filled to capacity. The Elote was bland & over all a huge miss. They use baby corn & fry them in tempora which was cute, but honestly the most disappointing out of everything. Just bland & the sauces on the side were also just bland. Elote needs some flavor! Lime, chili powder, something. The Wagu sliders were yummy. Truffle fry’s were basic Coney Island fries with a ton of truffle powder. Meh. We also had the chicken Katsu. Another pretty presentation, but lacked flavor. Didn’t finish this one. Also id recommend training your food runners to always explain what’s on the dish, Wether it’s a weird sauce or something that’s unique about the dish. It really gets people excited & they feel informed. With so many fantastic fusion restaurants in Detroit i.e. Takoi or Basan you have to set yourself apart & this restaurant just didn’t. Nothing seemed innovative or special & everything lacked flavor. Also they automatically gratuity 20% while I totally support this (as a ton of servers get ripped off) i’m just throwing this out here for the masses. Overall I won’t be returning as there’s plenty of other powerful flavors in the City.
Overpriced everything. Specialty drinks $24. Named vodka $16. You get the picture. Service was excellent, very attentive wait staff, however 3 of us were seated at a table for 2. No room for food dishes, and no, the restaurant was not crowded at 5:30 pm. Atmosphere was eclectic, industrial vibe. Too expensive
Bella was our server and she was so great and super attentitive! We went for my best friends birthday and she gave us such a great experience - sparklers and all!
Overall the food was good. Only small issue is the Chilean Sea Bass was a little dry and fishy. I know it is hard to get this right. Felt rushed, the waitress was polite but didn’t give us time to enjoy the meal. We had appetizers, drinks, meal and dessert in about an hour. We also had a horrible table in terms of location and they wouldn’t move us when we asked. It is disappointing to go to a nice restaurant expecting to be able to enjoy the company of your friends and instead feel like the restaurant wants you out.
This place used to be really good. This time, drinks were good food was not. Ordered the dumplings which came out burnt. Lo Mein was more like an Alfredo. We were told they are trying out a new menu... Staff were nice but very slow and for the very few amount of people in the restaurant came by very infrequently. Overall very disappointing.
Really good food. Service was great. Bit pricey but definitely worth going. Had a party of 4 and basically shared everything we ordered. Had the wagyu tacos, wagyu sliders, rock shrimp, wagyu egg rolls (amazing), filet mignon, chicken katsu and lamb chops (best thing on the menu - highly recommend). Also, all of their protein is certified halal - says it right on the bottom of the menu. Huge bonus for us, as it’s not often we can go to such a nice restaurant and be able to order/eat everything on the menu.
A New York style vibe. This place has levels, a DJ certain days, and a very personable manager! The food was amazing! My lambchops that the waitress stated had been marinating for 48 hrs, were just that tender, and as flavorful as could be. The crab Rangoon was not the greatest, but nonetheless still very good. The Chilean sea was not like any other Ive ever had. In a good way. There was this semi spicy BBQ coat that was on it, but not over powering. It was excellent!
Five-star experience! The restaurant hosted my daughters sweet 16 dinner, and it was absolutely perfect. From the warm welcome to the delicious food and impeccable service, every detail was thoughtfully executed. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our celebration was unforgettable. Thank you for making my daughters special day truly memorable!
Date night with my boyfriend! The place is stunning. They did a stellar job rehabbing it. Small plates. We ordered 4 dishes for the two of us to share. We probably could have ordered another and not been overly stuffed. The cucumber salad was the only thing that I wouldnt order again. The Carnival Cauliflower was delicious! I love purple cauliflower! The 48 Hour Lamb Lollipops were so delicious! I could have ate 3 orders myself. Let me tell you about the King Crab Truffle Gnocchi!!! Oh, my, goodness! Freaking fantastic! Super creamy and garlicky. Huge pieces of king crab!!! The gnocchi was cooked to perfection! Super impressed! Our server Marcus was fabulous. The rest of the staff was friendly as well. We will definitely be back.
We meandered into this fine establishment and were greeted by the stunning Cat behind the bar who welcomed us with open arms. She proceeded to suggest the finest cocktails and food options available to us and let me tell you, she didn’t not disappoint. infinity stars all around would do again. Can’t miss spot ing Detroit!
The vibes were amazing!! Our server Gabrielle was great!! She was super nice and friendly!! This was my first time here on Wednesday night but I definitely will be back
We went to PAO as a group of 2 families to celebrate end of school mid-June. The place was amazing! They were very friendly, and accommodated me with the last minute reservation (all other downtown places said they were booked and were not willing to work with me). The atmosphere of the place was very artistic and unique; we were seated on the balcony which used to be theaters balcony, and the view was very aesthetically pleasing. Waitresses were very attentive, friendly, and patient with the kids. And the food!!! I mean, wow! Exceeded all expectations. It was top-notch high end experience and totally made our day. And a bonus is that it’s a walking distance from all major hotels (we stayed at the Element by Marriott and it was 7 minutes walk, super convenient!!). We are definitely coming back!
Cool atmosphere with a great drink menu. But my steak was over cooked while being explicitly suggested by the server to at least order medium which is what I ordered. The manager offered to replace the meal but the dining experience was nice and slow already to begin with so I simply did not have time but they took care of it how they could. Disappointing for such a pricey spot. I would not have complained otherwise.
The food was great. We are planning to come back. The plates are kinda a la carte which is good for tasting a lot of different things. The cocktails were great too. We usually get 1 each but this was the rare occasion where we both got 2. We were here early on Saturday night, just as they opened so they were pretty empty. My hmm
I’m not even sure where to start. We were crammed in a corner back seat and the table was dirty. We ordered so much food ($306 bill) but left hungry. How much smaller could someone make a spring roll?!!! Dumplings were also so small and not worth the price. Sea bass was so salty and it seems like the only flavoring this place knows how to do is add furikake to everything. Just awful, it’s fine to price things high however it has to come with flavor and value. Neither was shown at Pao. You’re honestly better off eating anywhere else. Not sure how this place won for decor either.
I’ve been here several times. I’ve had a little bit of everything including the shishito peppers, octopus, creamy rock shrimp, edamame, and I swear they had salmon on their menu. I can’t find it now, but it was amazing as well. Service can be a little slow depending on how busy, and I hate that they only have one bathroom.
Gabriella was thee BEST! She was attentive, knowledgeable of the new menu that had so many tasty items (try the Lamb Chops). The drinks were strong and cold which is a recipe for success! I’d definitely come again!
My husband and I had the best experience at your restaurant. We don’t frequent Detroit very often but, with the amazing hospitality of Ali and Gabriella we definitely plan to return soon. Thank you so much for helping create an amazing evening on the town, Food was 100% fantastic. Highly recommend
First visit to Pao in a historic Art Deco building was amazing. Fantastic service at the bar from Cat and terrific appetizers as part of EAT Detroit event. Managers were around and very nice. Also saw sustainable practices use. We will be back!
Everything about PAO is simply amazing! the food, the atmosphere, and the service was phenomenal! Cat was the bartender and let me just say she made the best espresso martini i’ve ever had not only that but the service was off the charts 1000/10 will be back and will definitely be back to see Cat!
I was first a bit startled by the price of the food, but after tasting everything I was very satisfied. Gabby, our server, was very knowledgeable of the menu and made great recommendations. The seabass was absolutely delicious. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. Definitely would come again on date night.
The food was amazing!!! I have never been to a restaurant where i have cleaned my complete plate. The food was delicious & the drinks were also. The waitress was on point everything was outstanding
Had a great time! Food, service, atmosphere was spectacular! Was weary about the new menu, my weariness was put to rest, everything was delicious! Our server Giavanna recommended the crispy salmon, and lamb chops, and let’s just say she didn’t disappoint, girl knows her food! We also had the truffle fries and Pao Pao shrimp. We will definitely be back to see her, and to eat and drink
Very few vegetarian options. Had to eat truffle fries for dinner. The waiter was ok. Haven’t seen her in a while and I’m waiting for the bill. I feel like the bill should have came after she took our menus. We had menus on the table for the entire dining experience, so once she asked if it was ok to take the menus, I think that’s a good Q to bring the bill. That atmosphere, ambiance, and music is cool. Been waiting for the bill about 20 minutes at this point.
Everything was super delicious. The ambience was great server was great. Just took a very long time to eat. Other than that. It was a great evening.
I really enjoyed this place the atmosphere was nice the food was delicious the only reason why Im giving it four stars is because our service was mediocre. We ordered waygu sliders and they never came. When our waitress realized we hadnt received them, they gave us complimentary shots and told us thr kitchen had burnt them, but they are remaking them. We waited about 45 minutes and still hadnt received them. I told the waitress to not worry about them at this point We were ready to go. They brought them anyway and didnt charge them for us. The truffle fries were AMAZING. Overall, I liked the food and would definitely return. I just hope the service is a little more attentive next time.
We came in for a belated Mothers Day celebration and had the general sense that we were not valued as customers. To the staffs credit, we were very quickly accommodated when we asked for a quieter table and can see the appeal for a variety of diners no matter where we sat. It was a bit disappointing that the upstairs seating was unavailable, but it neither improved nor hurt our view of the restaurant. The main issue with the service was the dismissive responses we had to questions and requests, particularly when asking why components that were listed on the menu were not on the item in question. The small plate wagyu tacos were disappointing with a strong salty and sour flavor that competed with a very fatty texture that can only be described as coating my mouth. They looked great and, though I appreciate a good looking dish, Id prefer it taste good as well. All of our mains were great. The lamb, sea bass, short rib, and salmon met our expectations and we had nothing but praise for how much more thoughtful they felt as dishes. The vanilla bean panna cotta was a good finish to the meal. Overall, I struggle to find a compelling reason to eat here again, but there were some strong positives.
Excellent service & food with a sexy atmosphere. We were there for dinner & the music was a little loud for conversation; otherwise, it was a great atmosphere. Our group tried several things on the menu: chicken, fish, sea bass, sliders, salad, cauliflower wraps and everything was delicious. The food & drinks really nice presentations.
This is my second time here at PAO Detroit & the food is outstanding! The drinks are amazing! I had the pomegranate drink!! 5 stars across the board. It also helps that the staff is friendly!
Giavanna was fantastic! She was observant, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. Her warm demeanor enhanced our dining experience, and her menu recommendations were spot on. Highly recommend her service!
Daisy was our server. Super professional, super sweet and helped us with suggestions and directions to our next stop. Great food, great espresso martini amazing panacotta. Thank you Daisy!
Excellent food, service, drinks and music!! Ask for Gabrielle for your waitress! She’s amazing and will take GREAT care of you! 10/10 experience!! Highly recommend!
I have to say, we did the works, my boyfriend and I. From 4 appetizers to a main course and a beautiful dessert (which was given to me) for my 30th birthday. This was quite the treat. I will say that if you want a cold martini, make sure you mention it. But everything that we ate was immaculate. Giovanna was our server and she was so sweet and attentive. District manager Ali Fawaz was here and came to the table to check on our experience and was wonderful. I am a huge fan of all of his restaurants. He also brought me a LEGITIMATELY frozen martini to my table 20 minutes after I mentioned that mine was warm…was I shocked? No. Because they never disappoint at PAO! I have loved this restaurant since they opened and I hope that everyone has the experience I do every time I walk through the doors.
I recently visited a highly acclaimed 5-star restaurant, and while the dining experience was exceptional, the valet service was profoundly disappointing. Upon arrival, I was left waiting for over 20 minutes before anyone acknowledged my presence. When a valet finally appeared, they were dismissive and seemed more interested in chatting with colleagues than assisting guests. The real issue arose when it was time to leave. After waiting an additional 30 minutes for my car to be retrieved, it arrived with a noticeable scratch that wasnt there before. When I brought this to the valets attention, they were unapologetic and dismissive, refusing to take responsibility.Such poor valet service significantly marred an otherwise outstanding evening. Its a shame that a restaurant of this caliber would have such a subpar valet experience. I hope management addresses these issues promptly.
Pao is decent with room to grow. We went early on in their opening and the waiter wasnt super versed on the menu. The cocktails werent very good but a lot of the food was. In particular the Wagyu tomahawk, filet sliders, and crab gnocchi were pretty exceptional. The building is also super cool, one of the more unique Detroit restaurants.
Very cute place. A bit pricey but I guess its worth it. The alcoholic beverages were a little watered down but whatever. It is what it is. Good food, great ambiance. Our server was really nice as well. My biggest complaint would be their restroom situation. They have unisex bathrooms. I personally don’t wanna to go to the same public restroom as men. Also its only one stall so there was always a wait outside the bathroom. Also I noticed they have no paper towels inside the restroom. Only hand dryer’s. Once again I personally do not like hand dryers. I like to dry my hands with paper towel. Other than that, i would recommend. They had a dessert that was to die for. Some type of cake with fresh strawberries and like a strawberry preserve on top. It was delicious
Shelby our bartender was so accommodating and surprised us with drinks she thought we’d might like. And we did! She did amazing and I’ll definitely be back. Thank you!
I was seated on the main floor. There is an upstairs. I’m not sure if it’s just for parties. I like to see pictures of the food before ordering. I looked at photos from reviews. I decided to go with the shrimp. It look like they have went down on the portion size for the food. I’ll come back for a drink. This is not somewhere that I’ll come to if I’m really hungry.
The environment was great. The food was not worth the price (not even close). Staff was nice, but still felt inattentive. Sales-oriented environment. Other customers were enjoying and the lighting was nice so that made the atmosphere better but poor food quality and high prices make this place ignorable. You can find excellent food in Detroit, but this is not one of those.
Bella was an excellent waitress, and even gave my wife a great birthday dessert. Food was hot , fresh and delicious!!!!
I just want to say one thing about Giavanna is to keep her around for sure! I’m new to Pao and she is so welcoming and made me feel very comfortable on my first date and very funny and treats all her customers like family/friends I even see her with her other tables laughing and getting to know all her customers by name. She really is something. I will be back!
Trendy hot spot in the new Detroit that resembles a restaurant/bar in another city like Miami or Houston. The winner here is the ambiance and their ability to attract a very chic looking clientele. You ever go to a venue and its just full of really attractive people? This is that type of place. LolThe second floor had a DJ who was decent and it helped make the upstairs feel like a lounge that was something between a restaurant and a club. The drinks are good and imaginative, but rather expensive. One of the ladies in our party had a flaming drink made in a tiki looking glass that she said was really good, but it costed about 25 dollars. The food came out beautifully plated and looked amazing. Unfortunately, it looked better than it actually tasted. It wasnt bad, just not amazing. I had the Bulgogi, which is one of my favorite Korean dishes, and it had an overwhelming ginger flavor to it. My group all had pretty similar things to say about the food. Looks great, tastes pretty good.Overall for what you pay I give the food a 3, drinks a 4 and ambiance a 5 out of 5.I would go back but probably just for drinks and vibes.
I went here for a girls night on 2/17/24. Our waiter was extremely nice! However, when we sat down she let us know that the menu was limited due to them having a new kitchen staff but the flavors were amazing. You guys, there were only FOUR options for appetizers, FOUR options for dinner, and TWO options for dessert. Also, WARNING, if you have high blood pressure do not come here! All of our food was extremely salty! I couldn’t even eat it! It was overall very disappointing. I’m upset that we spent so much money here.
The food was excellent and the service was amazing.! Been there 4 times already and will definitely be back a 5th time. The Atmosphere was very classy and upscale with reasonable prices.
Giavanna was an outstanding waitress! She provided prompt service with a smile and truly went above and beyond. Highly recommend! She was attentive, quick, and had a great attitude. Definitely enhanced our dining experience!
Delicious lamb lollipop entree in pic around $40. And they were big with some sweet sauce drizzled on it, so good. That was salt on fire. The server was great and attentive. Cocktails were good and strong for at least $15 each. The hosts were attentive and positive as well. We sat at the bar and had a wonderful time. The bathroom was clean. They only have 2 bathrooms though that are unisex and lock. They have an upstairs but you need a reservation if you dont want to wait really long or sit at the bar. They preserved assume of the original architecture. TVs with sports on in the background. Great date night restaurant spot.
After fasting all day, we had a reservation at 8 pm. There is a free table to sit all 6 of us but they will not give it to us. They offer to order in the bar or while we are standing next to the door. The place looks nice, the food maybe is good ( is 8.25pm and we havent tried it yet , but the service organization is actually bad
Came here the first time the other weekend and Gabrielle was my bartender. I will be back because of the amazing food and great friendly service from my bartender! She made great suggestions for drinks and I’m normally really picky. Great experience!!
Excellent place to stop in for a drink before a game. A couple Katanas off the cocktail menu will treat you right before you head into the arena or ballpark. I ate here recently for the first time. The Chilean Seabass was AMAZING! And the service was exceptional as always. Shelby is the best!!
Great vibe and drinks. Service was top notch, no empty glasses and good speed of courses coming to the table. Food was just okay for the menu prices
Server Giavanna and gabby are very attentive and caring for their customers I love that they have two sisters working together. They made the environment very comfortable for me and my friends thank you guys! #pao4L
So thankful for Jill Holmes who has been my friend forever set us up with reservations and great service. Always follow her to the restaurants she works at. Was just at Prime 29 and Nara... best time ever with her and the staff!!
Wow where do I start. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Our reservation was at 830 and we were not seated until 9. We had a party of 8 who all ordered appetizers and entrees. 1-2 dishes came out every 20 minutes and we did not get to eat together. The servers ignored us and we had to send back a few meals to get heated up. The manger was snappy and had an attitude. They comped our bill which was the least that they could do. All together it’s overacted and I would not recommend.
Great food and great service. We had Jackie and she was the best. Knowledgeable and attentive.
Bella was awesome!Food also excellentProbably good put off heavy dj closer to 10 pm
I arrived for a birthday dinner & they gave us a separate menu that had only 5 items on it & 3 of them I was allergic 2. Half way through our meal they asked us if we could move 2 a downstairs table, once we got there it was not enough room for the guest & the space we did have was way 2 tight. Had a horrible experience & they charged me extra for the drink I had because of the party size. Do not recommend this place especially if youre having a large party dinner. Negative ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Paige and Shelby were my servers and they were SO amazing! Literally hot babes and so knowledgeable and made my experience so good! They suggested the Filet and Sea Bass. So good! Go there drink tequila, eat the steak and give those babes your money you won’t be disappointed!!!!!
I can’t say enough good things about Pao! The hospitality was exceptional, and I’m still thinking about the crispy rice and the salmon! Great spot for a fun night out!
Every bite of food was delicious and the vibe was such a fun night out! I highly recommend for a group or a date night! We had a large group so they even specialized the menus for us to help take out the stress of our guests deciding what to order. We had great service by our waitress Page who did a great job of keeping the drinks flowing!
Very sexy vibe as we celebrated my cousin 40th birthday! The food was excellent and savory. We enjoyed vegan and non vegan dishes. The BBQ short ribs taco and the dumplings were amazing! The staff were welcoming and friendly. We had a basket of food: the Ceasars salad, cauliflower wraps, dumplings, steak bites, salmon, truffle fries, edamame, BBQ short rib taco and wine.
Loved the service and atmosphere, the food was very mid!! Love the Pao Pao shrimp, we also had the miso Ceasar salad which was bland, the truffle fries were mid the truffle sauce was good, the fries didn’t match the sauce. The salmon was ok, would have liked some sort of side maybe a palet of rice, overall love love love the drinks, but would come here for drinks and an appetizer not a full meal. 💕
Extremely disappointed with my recent visit to Pao Detroit. Not only were we overcharged for bringing in a sign, but the service was also subpar. Will not be returning. I talked to the manager and asked him to waive the extra sign charge but acted as if it was the waitress’s fault. I talked to the waitress and she said all locals know that the sign is $150.I guess this place is for locals only. Very disappointed
Celebrated a private-dining, pre-fix dinner celebration for my fiancés surprise birthday party here. Their event coordinator, Kayla was so responsive and deliberate with every single detail she thought of in putting on such a display of elegance during the entire duration of the dining experience.Think high-end, modern, Miami! 10/10 you must go!!
Went in for Mother’s day yesterday, it was amazing! Food was un-real!! Service was awesome always someone around to make sure you dont need anything. They answered all questions we had!
The Food was very mediocre and the menu limited. I ordered the Chicken which was basically a small order of chicken strips with bbq sauce drizzled on top. Per the waitress it came with a cabbage vegetable sauce, so I said coleslaw? She said not really. It was coleslaw 100%. I asked for a side of potatoes and she said she cant do that but that I could order a side of French fries. I was a little confused about that but it is what it is. I will not go back, I do not recommend this place for dinner. Maybe a drink or 2 and a photo opp, but thats about it.
The food was great! The Wagyu tacos are a hit! Our server Giavanna was so attentive and pleasant! Nice vibe!
GiaVanna’s service was excellent!!! We really enjoyed her serving us and hope to get her on our next visit. The food was really GOOD 👍🏽
This place sucks! They only have two flavors of hookah lmao like what crowd are you trying to bring ? Mint is more popular than Irish peach! Also this place gives wanna be LA so bad! I feel bad for anyone that spends a dollar here! U can go to Dearborn have a better experience! The waitresses which I had more than 1 like do I tip u all or y’all splitting ? They were very kind but I’m shocked at the prices also 😂 should be a strip club but whatever go off Tao I mean Pao also the kitchen closes at 10pm like if u want bad hookah and no food come here
Cat at the bar was incredibly friendly and when I asked her, shared fascinating information about the unique history of the restaurant.
Jill Holmes is a fantastic manager, all the food was absolutely delicious and we were able to get a seat very quickly. Service was fantastic.
They have such a great menu, and the atmosphere is perfect for a girls night, date night or celebrations. Gabrielle is always my bartender and she makes the best martinis!
Such a rip off place. They overcharge for everything. Imagine bringing a sign to celebrate a birthday costs $150 (without mentioning anything) on top of a big bill. Ask before you order
The food and service was excellent. My wife and I will be dining here in the near future. Thank you Pao for making my wife’s Mother’s Day dinner a great experience.
Cat is amazing!! She was easy to talk to and super prompt. Will always ask for her for my bar tender
2 couple: Saturday night 6pm. Great food! Horrible service. Not slow they rushed us thru our entire meal.kept coming to clear off plates( still eating food). Never refilled our waters. Served our Caesar salads with her meals instead of first. At 7 our waitress presented us with the bill . We inquired about dessert she said it will take 30 minutes. ( we ordered the cake it was served in 7 minutes). Asked about coffee & cappuccino she said we don’t have either our machine is broken.Appetizers, 4 dinners , drinks we left at 7:15 didn’t feel welcome at all. I guess the waitress figured since her 20% gratuity was already included in the bill. What was the point in being a pleasant server and allowing us to have a relaxing meal?
Our food was delicious, but their prices are on the higher side. I enjoyed my experience & would go again.
The food was amazing, but the portions are too small in general and DEFINITELY too small for the price listed. While I dont mind paying for an experience, that felt like that was majority of the cost. Also the manager/owner came to my party at the 95th minute of our reservation to basically tell us to get up because he had another reservation (looks like 90 minutes is the max they allow a party). He was polite and put it nicer than that, but that is what he was communicating. Problem is, we were only over because the waitress hadnt came back to take our payment, so it left a bad taste in our mouth. He apologized but for a restaurant selling an experience, I dont think you should be saying something like that when the party is only a couple minutes over, independent of who is at fault.Overall, I dont think i got a good value but the food that I did get was absolutely delicious
We really enjoyed everything we got here. We had the spicy edamame, Wagyu Beef Sliders & Ahi Tuna Nachos. They were all delicious! We hit up happy hour for the Asian Pear-suasion cocktail and it was really good! Very pear forward but a nice balance of flavors. Loved that mine came with a flower too. We would definitely come back again.
Good food, great service, cool vibe. Fig Old Fashioned was nice
The ambiance of PAO is very trendy, a little club like with a live DG on the second floor but still with regular restaurant seating. The food is good but leaves something to be desired. The tacos had thicker than expected shells. The dumplings were delicious and are highly recommended. The chicken is similar to what you would get at any takeout place.
The food was good but I wasn’t blown away. The service is lovely, and the bathrooms are exceptionally clean.
Cat, our bartender made me the BEST espresso martini I’ve ever had!!! She is very sweet, knowledgeable and a great face of this beautiful bar!! 💖
Giavanna was my waitress. she was very formative about the menu, attentive and gave us the best service we could possibly ask for!
We were having a satisfactory dinner until we found a very obviously non black hair in our udon noodles. Thanks to the manager for volunteering to omit it from the check. For some reason this caused the waiter’s service level to drop from below average to poor. I mean the service was pretty trash. Wait staff is pivotal to the success of a restaurant. I hope that I can update this review upon my next visit.
Sea bass and lamb were fantastic! Excellent atmosphere with a very cosmopolitan crowd. Absolutely loved it.
I came here after work with a friend for happy hour, and it did not disappoint! Beautiful architecture, amazing vibe and excellent service all around. We tried the wagyu tacos, Brussel sprouts and truffle fries. Zero complaints! We will be back!
What a great experience! Beautiful atmosphere, kind staff, food and drinks were delicious. Cant wait to come back!
The new menu is amazing, food was delicious, Giavanna was my server she’s very friendly and efficient. I’d definitely recommend going there
I like to check out the newest spots....this one is an ok dig, tho I was ignored at 1st as I sat at the bar..... #azi made up for the oversite😅 they seem to cater more to big groups or ones thats been there before, its a sharing is caring kinda place so next time I visit I should be good, I wont come alone😉 prices arent outrageous for most of the items, great wine selects #detroitchik #kensen #pao #happyhour #sak #loveissharing #asianfusion
I have no words to describe how terrible this restaurant is. We had a reservation and didn’t get seated for 40 minutes after. Our food came out at different times and was cold, chewy, and flavorless. The manager was extremely rude and showed no hospitality even though we waited 2.5 hours for our food to all finally arrive. At restaurants, you are supposed to enjoy food together, not eat it separate, 30 minutes apart. DO NOT COME HERE!!!!!
It was my 🥳 Birthday Celebration and my first time at PAO! The service was ok I was a little disappointed when my food arrived the area I was seated at didn’t have much lighting…the waitress brought over the light after they realized I was using my phone light to see my food! It was very busy so I understood she is only one person. I loved the dessert I was given with the sparklers! However my overall experience was great 👍🏼 Food was excellent and I’m looking forward to returning for a date night!
The rosado aphrodisiac was amazing! Service was great as well. Highly recommend.
Giavanna was the best! I’ll definitely be coming back to visit because of her, she so personalable I love it ♥️
Bailey has been an amazing server! The food was also great.
Ask for Giovanna as your server she was so amazing and sweet, the food and vibes were 10/10
The atmosphere of PAO is beautiful, but a tad loud. We ordered the cauliflower lettuce wrap, they were delicious. Between us we had the Mongolian Beef, and the Lobster Udon. Both main meal items were just okay - swimming in sauce, and wayyyy overpriced for the taste. I will say the portions were good. Glad I went, probably won’t go back.
Love it first time , staff , food and everything else was amazing good bar staff great drinks. The ambiance is sexy well lit but not bright (lights with candles to supplement ) the food was high caliber and not pretentious the serving sizes was immaculate. While I don’t remember the bartenders name he was awesome even told us about the Gallic aoli fries while we wait they were awesome and when we we able to sit it ramped up and the rest of the night was cloud nine…that Chilean sea bass perfect BRAVO!!!
Unexpected tip charged 20 %. Who said i want to pay 20% tip and i add additional 8 $ because I didnt know they charge 20% until i saw the receipt at home. They didnt even show me the receipt before i give my credit card. Only appetizer was good food I dont recommend. The waiter said the beer is imported from Japan it was a lie, it was canada. Unbelievable restaurant i didnt like.
Had an amazing experience with our server Alana. She was quick & extremely knowledgeable with the menu items. Food was fabulous!
Had the best experience at PAO Detroit. Gabrielle was phenomenal and was very attentive. Service was great and the vibes were great as well! Recommend!
This restaurant exceeded my expectation. I don’t normally order lamb chops due to bad experiences at other restaurants. The lambs chops were “THE BEST LAMB CHOPS” I’ve ever had in my life! I’m a serious food critic because I like to cook. I even had the pleasure of meeting Chef Alex and manager Kirk. Very pleasant people. Shelby was an amazing, professional, and energetic waitress. Drinks are delicious.
Food was absolutely amazing. Gabby gave lots of recommendations for bars to go to. Great vibe, ans good drinks! Would come again.
Pao is amazing! My server Shelby was absolutely a doll, she made sure our experience was perfect! Will definitely be back!
Took almost 30 minutes for my drink to arrive... I got there at 617 they open at 5 I ordered lamb chops and they said they were out which was frustrating so I ordered the filet with lobster crab added it was very delicious and tender. The rocking shrimp was a good portion and flavor the Japanese ceaser tasted like peanut butter but otherwise pretty good I would not recommend this restaurant if you have a peanut allergy. Music and seating was awesome. We sat in the dead of the dark for 35 mins until the food runner realized that the light for our table was missing then he provided us one... otherwise experience was about a 6 out of 10... if the service and inventory were better I would definitely rate a 8.5 of 10. Oh yea no parking validation so you have to search for parking and pay a range of 15-30 dollars to park so with food and parking your paying at least 190.00 fo 2 people with 1 salad 1 appetizer, a shared meal and 1 drink
Fantastic drinks and food, their new menu launched today and everything was so good!!! the katana was amazing as well as the pao pao shrimp, the service was phenomenal!!! Will be back
This restaurant seems to still be deciding if they want to be a restaurant or a nightclub. Staff is very young and kept the nightclub music pumping all night. Not conducive to the dinner scene. Food was Ok but the service was poor and the timing was completely off. Dinks took 20 minutes to get then the appetizer came on the heals of the drinks and dinner came before we could even half way finish our appetizer. The waitress never even came back to find out if we wanted a second drink. We left and went down the street for another cocktail.
Hands down the best service I have experienced at a restaurant. The atmosphere is unbeatable, and I felt like this was a little taste of Miami. Alana was such a beautiful soul, and she recommended the lamb chops. They were delicious! Great hospitality! Would definitely request her again!
Bailey was very kind and gave a great drink recommendation.
We were downtown and hungry. Did a Google search for seafood and found Pao. They were open until 11:00 pm. Did not need a reservation. We were lucky to get in, get a table and have a nice romantic soiree on a Thursday night. Ordered a bunch of stuff and everything was delicious. Service top notch. Very clean, very safe, very Covid strict. Excellent spot for some very good food with a brilliant atmosphere
Cat was the best bartender i love her!!! will be back just for her
Elegant, lively, nice echo spaces. This place seems to have intimate corners as well as open atmosphere. We popped in for a lunch snack of carrot and ginger soup and ‘carnival’ cauliflower. The cauliflower had a great sesame and soy based dressing and the soup was just what we needed to incite us to drink down some water before a night on the town.
Booked a reservation for Sweetest Day. Upon arrival I was not seated in a booth as I stated in my preferences. I ordered the filet Oscar and portions were tinyyyyyyy. My bf ordered lamb chops they were cute but tiny and fatty. I was not pleased with the sauce of my meal so I requested a regular filet They returned my filet I had previously. (I knew because I cut a small piece of it) Assuming they rinsed it and gave it back as it had zero flavor at this point. I was very displeased and ended up grabbing takeout after spending a pretty penny. Wouldn’t recommend!!!
Nice quality food. Service was good. Atmosphere was good. No complaints.
Shelby is an incredible server & the food and drinks were amazing! Easily one of the best dining experiences.
Great place, amazing food & our server Gia is professional & so sweet!
I ordered the lobster roll. The bread was like a 5 year old was playing with flour and just add water to it. It was the worst bread I ever had. The lobster itself was good, but there was like one chunk in it. The rest was some kind of lobster salad ingredients. The waitress never even asked how the meal was and I had to get up and ask for the bill. Way over priced for below mediocre food at best and nonexistent service. But it is nice inside. Good atmosphere though. But dont order the food. Even though their food presentation is good, I wouldnt try anything else after my experience.
We split all 4 dishes, and it was absolutely phenomenal! Edona was the best waitress! We will be back as possible!
My bartender Cat was wonderful. She made me a lemon drop martini and it was awesome. I will be back!
This place has a lot of room for improvement. When the fries are the best items from a restaurant that is supposed to be high-end with Asian influence. it is just not it. Food needs to be overhauled massively. Basan is much much better if your are actually looking for Asian fusion flavors. Service was fine besides charging our card for extra items our table did not order. Atmosphere is okay, but not sure I would even come back for the night life for this Tao wannabe.
The atmosphere at PAO is upbeat and festive, classy and elegant all at once. It’s a see and be seen kind of place, perfect for celebrating special occasions and toasting success in style. Dress to impress. The cocktails are expertly mixed. The food is very well-executed and attractively plated. The service is attentive and smooth. The music is always on-point. I especially love the nights when there is a violinist playing live with the mix the DJ pumps out. If it’s your birthday, expect fireworks when they bring out your cake. No joke!
