Do not come here. Your phone will be snatched, Polo G style, buddy! Is doing guys is there stealing telephones having a good time at your expenses. Dont go. Go = lose a phone! Uh oh! but the appetizers is good.
Maybe just an off night, but the dance floor was empty on a Friday. They seemed to only place disco music. Im probably just not the target audience.
Love this place so much! Such an awesome queer spot to check out. The bartenders were so friendly and welcoming. One of my favorite spots in LA!
Akbar in Silver Lake is a fantastic LGBT bar that embraces the power of rock and roll and a love for guitars. With a fun atmosphere, cold beers, and a welcoming spirit, its a great place to make new friends and enjoy a night out. Join the community at Akbar and experience a vibrant and inclusive spot to hang out and have a good time.
Went here for Madonna night for the first time since the pandemic last night. I love that they host this night! However, it was insanely packed and hot as a sauna on the dance floor. Its bad enough that theres no so AC so I dont understand why they cant but some fans in there at the very least. This is especially important in the post-COVID era to dilute viral aerosols. I hope they do something about this soon cuz I truly love everything else about this bar/club. It would be nice to dance the night away more comfortably and without fear of getting sick. Lastly, the DJ could have done a better job with song selection last night.
Went to Akbar for the first time yesterday and had the best time. The bar itself is very nice! The bartender Jennifer was AMAZING!! Super nice, very friendly and attentive! I will definitely be back more often!!!
This spot is so great and has always stayed true to itself : it’s not a dive tho : it’s fun and clean just with the best lighting and ambiance! Jennifer behind this bar is like none other : such great make up and phenomenal jewels & has always made us feel welcomed! I also won a Madonna contest here! They hosted an actual Madonna trivia night and I dominated it winning the grand prize! As if a daily AKBAR Happy Hour : 4-7 Daily, wasn’t enough!
Drink was $8, gave the bartender $10 ….and he never came back. I was going to tip, but clearly he decided to TIP HIMSELF. Finished my drink and left. Too sketchy for me. Found another bar where I wasn’t getting ripped off.
Absolutely the fun gay dance bar on the west coast!
Phone was stolen :( really thought this was a safe space
Everything was great until we have a rude bartender who felt obligated to get a tip, yes we were going to tip although in cash but he had something to say before we even finished.
This is a gay bar, not a “gay friendly” bar. If anything, it’s a straight-friendly bar, but sometimes I wish it wasn’t. Great drinks, great crowd, and the very best jukebox in LA.
The staffs were very accommodating, nice, and kind. Besides, their foods and drinks were good. The ambiance was clean, has air conditioning, and relaxing. Honestly, I had a great experience with this bar. The music was great and nice to hear. Thank you very much. Till the next free-time!
Ordered a vodka water for $8… Pricey compared to where I’m from, but boyyy was that a stiff drink! So totally worth it. The sweet bartender (wish I could remember her name…) gave me my second drink on the house as a welcoming gift to LA! Only took me two drinks before I had to dash out before I got too drunk. 😂 Will definitely be back soon! I’m going to make this spot my go-to. Didn’t explore too much as I was alone and scoping out my first queer bar in LA, but I’ll drag my new friends out here with me for sureee. :)
Had so much fun at the Eurovision viewing party yesterday. The bartenders are very welcoming. The drinks are nice and strong.
Great staff, great atmosphere, STIFF DRINKS, LOOSE PRICES. Friendly people, great music. There is always some little event or activity to keep you entertained. I love this place... my favorite intimate neighborhood bar.LGBTQ friendly.
This was my second time attending Planet Queer: Cosmic Cornucopia talent show at Akbar Silver Lake. I had such an unexpectedly outstanding time during my first visit, I couldnt wait to return this month for the last show until next Spring. The show was a Cornucopia of art forms: comedy, singing, acting, instrument playing, dancing, song writing, poetry, etc. Cant wait to put Akbar on my places to visit monthly in 2023 for art and entertainment.
Really friendly doorman and wonderful ambience, including a drag show (Sunday evening). Unfortunately, the bartender was really rude - I deferred to people who were waiting before me, and then he refused to serve me!
A small and unassuming place. We ordered two drinks with a friend and left good tips. A friend asked for another drink and the bartender told him he drank too much complained to the guard and we were taken out. What is there a bar for if not to drink in addition that is really nice and we left them lots of tips
Its a traaappp...lol jk
One of my favorite gay bars to visit, always chill and fun here!
This place is a great neighborhood bar and treasure. The night we went Jennifer, the beautiful, sweet and friendly blonde bartender, was behind the bar and kept the place humming. The drinks were great, the atmosphere really a throwback to a different, friendlier time, and the jukebox was pounding out really fantastic selections. The music was thankfully at a level that you could still have conversations with the other bar patrons. The clientele seem to be mostly people from the neighborhood, people stopping off for a drink after work before heading home, and many regulars from the surround communities. I stayed most of the night and discovered that after 10 pm the place expanded to include a dance floor hosted by a really amazing local dj. What a great surprise!! This is definitely a place to check out if you want a chill place to have a drink, dance, and perhaps even meet some new friends.
Wowee zowee. A gay club in LA. And it happens to be a neighborhood bar. Wow. When I used to look up best 80s dance nights in LA this would always be number one on yelp. They have theme nights like free comedy with real guest stars on Tuesdays with Bruce and a board game happy hour with Marcel on Mondays. Fun times USA!
Great bar to hang out and meet up with friends. The bartenders are extremely welcoming and sexy. Drinks are inexpensive and quite tasty. Occasionally, you might meet a celebrity or two. This place is definitely worth your while.
Just went to get vaccinated for monkeypox and waited since 2:15. They made us pay for entry first and then told half of us that there weren’t enough for everyone when they easily could have counted people outside and saved us 2+ hours of time. They literally cut off the line the person before me meanwhile people were jumping the line left and right. Completely disorganized. Horrible experience.
First time out on the West Coast in many years, Club Akbar is definitely a spot to try. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Very diversified crowd, great music, drinks well priced very cozy atmosphere.
The Mohawk bartender was rude for no reason lol. I asked for an adios, she gave me a face, and I asked what that’s supposed to mean. She said that’s not ordered here. Then the person next to me asked for help and she told him “sorry I’ll be right with you, these people are ordering complicated drinks.” Despite all this I kept an appreciative demeanor and tipped against my judgement. Wouldn’t recommend. First and last time. I get better service at Mickys. MICKYS! Godspeed.
Usually love this bar, but tonight my tab was 17 dollars, and when I just checked my bank account they charged me for 35. Super unhappy!
Happy pride!Gay women and men you know his placeClassic dive bar.Messy walls, messy floors, crowdedHot and sweaty, skin touching dance floor lolYes please lolEnough little tables and sitting areas around the place. Looks like there were two bars.Drink are reasonable $7 for a glass of wine, well vodka/soda $7Bartenders at quick and nice.Bouncers were very nice.Defiantly nothing fancy so dont expect awesomeness.Just have fun
I’ve been to many bars in California but the akbar bar top of the mall the DJ Tony Powell is the best I don’t know if he still there now but if he is he is the best I’ll give you 10 stars the community came together in and kept it together oh to lose a place like the egg park would’ve been devastating but we have it back now so let’s take care of the people.
My favorite bar in LA! Nice people, good drinks, great music. The crowd is usually a good mix of everyone so anyone who enters can feel comfortable.
Exceptionally bad music sometimes especially for a Saturday night like oh my god but otherwise it’s an okay space
Nice decor , ok ambience, it gets packed quickly nothing outbof the ordinarily. A good place to unwind , good music and just a dim relaxed set up .
Hi:) I came in here Saturday, December 9th 2017.First of all, I recently came out and I was just looking for a good “gay friendly” place to feel more comfortable. (I’ve been to San Francisco a few months ago and I loved it, thought I’d give it a try in LA)So, I walk in hoping to meet some new nice people.First thing I notice as I survey the room is that it’s mainly an older male crowd. It didn’t bother me.I figured I would get 2 drinks and I would go.(My friend was waiting outside for me)So, I sit down, as I am sitting I see that the Blond hair heavy set bartender notices me and I just ask for a water (I am not sure if I want to spend my money at this place because I am already a little uneasy alsoI was kind of nervous because this is new to me)So I’m just sitting there drinking my water and I see the same heavy set bartender notice that I’m just observing the room. She see’s me in her peripherals and it feels like I’m making her a little uncomfortable? Even though I am just keeping to myself? and I’m just trying not to come off as awkward.I guess I looked like a loner and I looked a little down (I had a rough day) but the older men seemed not to mind me. I mostly kept to myself. Finally a few women walk in and I make my decision to order one shot mixed with a fruity taste (My first drink of the day, I ordered whiskey but she made me something with Vodka for some reason)I go to put some songs on the jukebox. And I come back to order my second drink so I could get ready to go because my friend was still waiting outside (20-30 mintutes had passed) I wait there and no one seems to want to help me. I ask this thin gay guy if I could please get a whiskey and coke. He said he’s not the “bar back” that the heavy set blond haired women would help me. And she’s off to the side of the bar, I keep trying to catch her attention but it feels like she’s avoiding me (I don’t see how she doesn’t see me when I am making direct and obvious eye contact). Finally some guy tells me that if I’m not ordering a drink I need to move out of the way.I tell him, I’ve been waiting here for a drink for a few minutes and no one has served me.He told me she had just got off and that she would not be serving me and then he said that HE will also not be serving me. When I asked why, he said he doesn’t have to give me a reason. & he told me to move out of the way.I tried to explain to him that if I seemed a little off that I smoked a little earlier, that if my eyes looked a little red that’s the reason why.(Although I feel like that shouldn’t have been a factor because that’s my private personal information and I have a medical marijuana prescription for recreational use.And I’ve been smoking since I was 17. I am 26. Which = Very High Tolerance)So this leaves me to believe that this guy just doesn’t like me.I couldn’t understand why because the facts are that I only had 1 shot that whole day. I wasn’t acting disruptive, I wasn’t bothering the other patrons, I wasn’t all over the place, I wasn’t cussing or being rude to anyone, including the bartenders even after being discriminated against, I wasn’t acting erratic or slurring my speech or falling over.I only had one shot of vodka (when I asked for whiskey)I understand it’s rules, I get that. But the fact that all of the above was very apparent and this man still refused to acknowledge that is a little disturbing and questionable.I found out he was the owner and after I tried to explain everything to him he still blew me off. If I could have done a sobriety test, I would have and he would have been 100% wrong for what he did.He didn’t want the truth. He saw a loner “loser” who didn’t talk much and that sat there with a glass of water minding her own business. And that’s not right. Its not okay, that a grown women should be on guard and fear possible discrimination when going out alonejust because no one is there to stand up for them.I came to this “gay friendly bar” looking to feel comfortable and accepted. That is notat all what I felt here.
Fun bar ..great jukebox...
Akbar is alright. They sometimes have weird shows where you can see local performance artists. Not my favorite place, but I dont think Im their target patron anyway. Its a good place to go if youre a gay man looking for a laid back kind of bar.
They are based on nonsense, i thought it would be one of those casual bars that you can bar hope into, but they didn’t let me in because i couldn’t access my vaccine card on the spot. From the outside it looked wacky,
This place will throw a decent party for you. Ill give you that. Sad about how tired the Thursday night dance party has gotten. The last time I had a great time on the dance floor here, unfortunately was the wildly inventive PRINCE tribute...how long ago was that?
Akbar is one of the shining jewels of the gay bar scene in L.A. Aptly described to me as the gayest straight bar and straightest gay bar, Akbar attracts all kinds of people and a diverse crowd of gays and their friends. The clientele is admittedly more hipster than in the West Hollywood scene, but thats a given in the Silverlake neighborhood. The pours are generous and their prices wont make you woozy. They also have an amazing dance floor, and its separated from the bar in a way that makes it feel like a whole different venue - you can have a chatty night hanging at the bar, or go down the hall to the dance floor and rock out. I wish there were more gay bars like Akbar and less of vapid superficiality of West Hollywood.
The best gay bar on the Eastside, although thats not saying much. Its crowd can be hit or miss depending on the night. The front row is a chill bar vibe while the back bar and dance floor can get rowdier.
Very fun eastside gay bar. As a straight dude I always feel comfortable and have a good time. Staff is super friendly, prices are reasonable and music is usually danceable.
Awesome vibe, cheap drinks (for LA), super cool juke box, fun crowd, nice bartenders, and excellent dancing tunes. I had THE BEST time here.
Last night when my friend asked to have the DJ play a song, he called her an “f-ing c-nt” multiple times. Don’t play a song if you don’t want, most DJ’s are rude about the “flow” being interrupted and what not but this behavior is totally unacceptable. Especially in Los Angeles and in a supposed accepting atmosphere. When we spoke up to the staff about it they acted surprised and did nothing at all. If you are looking for a bar with an a-hole for a DJ, this is your place. And for the record it’s not ok to call a woman that ever, and certainly not because she asked the DJ to play Paula Abdul. Get a grip.
My adult children flew into LAX and after exploring LA for awhile we wanted to experience a bar in Silverlake and found Akbar. It is small, but cozy. Draft Beer was $3 (happy hour) and all the nibblies we could eat. The jukebox was free with a huge music selection. We will be back.
Forget West Hollywood-- this is the best queer bar in all of LA. Drinks are cheap and strong, and the jukebox has the best songs. I love coming for Craft Night on Wednesdays as well as bingo night and especially PLANET QUEER!
10/10– this bar feels like a movie
Great vibe here. Nice break from weho. Drinks are cheap and the people are way more friendly. Oh and you gotta check this place out in the summer! Well all year round really but you feel me.
The best gay bar in Silverlake still going. Its not leather or fetish type of bar like the other two. Its casual with shows and fun themed nights
Dont understand why they are checking vaccine cards. They dont even check the date when you had the last shot. Do they think the vaccine lasts forever in the body?? Lol. No wonder a guy that was there said he got covid 5 times.
This is one of my favorite bars in LA. Id call it gay friendly, without being explicitly a gay bar. Great drinks, low prices, nice neighborhood. Definitely stop in.
Super fun bar. I was visiting from NYC and didnt really know where to go but a friend recommended this place and Im glad we went. It gets super crowded but its a really fun bar.
Love this space, but they jacked up their prices and I swear they are still watering down their alcohol bottles (which theyve been caught doing in the past)
Fun bar in Los Angeles I go here with my friends all the time!!
Great place to hang with new friends and watch RPDR!
Great crowds and drinks reasonably priced and made well. The music could be better. Came here for disco night.
A friendly, local bar with a mixed queer crowd. A real Silverlake treasure that I hope never goes away. #1 on my list of LA gay bars.
Seriously such a fun time! The DJ played bangers the whole night. Danced for hours. Ended up closing out the bar!
Just so fun, so welcoming and such an important bar in LA’s queer nightlife
Pretty small, not much seating, no menu of drinks. Its alright, not the best but it has a good atmosphere
It was a good mix of people and had different places for dancing, drinking and talking with your friends. Very cool atmosphere.
Fun bar! Kind of divey but all the bartenders are awesome! The whole vibe is very positive and always feels comfortable.
Ive never found another watering hole in LA that I enjoy as much as Akbar. It can get a bit crowded sometimes but given how chill and friendly the patronage is, its not a thing.
Food is cheap! And its good! Their bean dip is so good with the chips. One of my go to spots for Mexican food!
Great 🏳️🌈 LA Dive Bar. No Fancy 🍹 No excessive prices either. Neighborhood look/feel/mood. If that’s what you are after ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely a fabulous place to have fun! Wonderful jukebox, dancing in the backroom and decently priced drinks.
Affordable drinks and wonderful atmosphere. The comedy was top notch. Definitely going back.
Great little hangout spot.Really good music (DJS) &drinks.
I mostly like Akbar alot, love the bartenders, been going for at least 15 years. New neighborhood patrons can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Akbar could be my favorite gay bar in Los Angeles. Great crowd, great event nights, great drinks, great prices, great staff. Really love this place.
My favorite gay bar in the area, DJs play consistently great music on the dance floor.
They require vaccine cards and mandate masks. I guess they dont believe in my body my choice 1/5 stars for them and anyone else who doesnt believe in freedom.
I like the crowd here, friendly and not pretentious. Drinks are strong lol
Very down to earth and neighborhoody, a wonderful change of pace from most nightlife in LA
Nobody asks proof of vaccination anymore…except you! Stupid! Loosing clients! Good luck!
Very local bar feel. Good drink specials on weeknights to get college locals out.
Fun-nish, but meh, this place mostly caters to gay MEN.
Great local dive. Perfect for non WeHo gays. Sometimes too many straight girls.
They have a jukebox
Incredible space, love the indoor and outdoor bars, fast bartenders, awesome DJs & music.
Horrible. Went for the monkey pox vaccine, they knew they didn’t have enough, but wanted their cover charge.
Its been mostly a hit (a miss when its really crowded like Eurovision). A neighborhood bar with lots of weekly events.
Great experience! Lovely crowd and fun music
Silver Lake staple. Long live Akbar.
Fun place, cheap drinks and live djs on Saturday nights.
Craft night in the back room on Wednesdays is more fun than thought itd be
Homophobic security at the door, callsHimself Carmichael
Beautiful upscaled bar, its a Different decor Indian!.. Very nice place for a Nightcap!..
I was my first time here. A special event and it was very good.
Cute spot. Kinda 70’s throwback decor. Cute crowd.
It is a wonderful place but does need some help with the handicapp bathroom.
The bartender last night was really rude.
Love
Confusingly dumb and racist
Bar is cool.. Clientele can be pretentious and unfriendly.
Nice small discobar with good music and mixed crowd
A good gay bar, just little narrow though
Friendly diverse crowd, and a Pokéstop. Lots of seating, too.
I went there early, very early. But I still had a great time.
Great informal place, pure fun, affordable prices
Small but just right 🌈
So happy theyre open again!
Cool place to have a drink
Great place, fun friendly crowd. 😝😋
