Hangar Bar

This place is closed down I was told as of 2 months ago. I hadn’t been here in 15 years and was in the area with some friends looking for an urban gay bar. The music, the clientele, the bartenders all of it was giving!! It’s unfortunate they closed down and left a void for patrons looking for an urban, cozy, welcoming and inclusive bar. Sad day on Christopher Street.However the gay dive bar across the street was a good alternative but lacked diversity. The bartenders there were absolutely amazing, they put together a shot concoction that was exactly what my female friends were looking for!

Very good place, focus in black gay people, I don’t visit it frequently but when I go I have good time. They have happy hour, today is Thursday until 10 pm, excellent

Dark urban gay bar. The DJ is pretty good, Friday cover includes one drink, but not a very crowded place. Unfortunately, the music is old soul and r&b classics. And pack your wallet...this is a CASH ONLY bar.

At first, I was really liking the place. But then last night 05/13/23 one of the security guys (tall, skinny, light skinned w/tattoos on his arm) accused myself and two of my friends of doing drugs in the bathroom (which we werent and he was watching us use the bathroom) and kicked us out and calling my friend all types of disrespectful names. I definitely wont be back, and its a shame cause I actually did like the environment.

I’m seeing a food stars review above here but idk about it because I go there to meet and drink. And for that it’s great.

Not a fan of the very narrow layout, but thats just personal. Its a niche spot for African-Americans and Latinos, so if you look Caucasian, dont expect people to be friendly with you there. Segregation at its peak.

The place is rather small and often overcrowded. Service can be slow. Some of the bartenders are unattentive. A place however where African-Americans can meet.Happy hour is a good time to visit if you like crowds.

Great music, great drinks, great atmosphere, and great trade! If you want to have a great time bring you and your friends over to hang R Bar. Open late till 4 a.m. Special nights on Fridays and Saturdays this is a staple for New York City nightlife in the lgbtq world expand your horizons and bring some straight Friends Along to you guys will definitely have a great time this place is awesome for anybody that enjoys some great beats drinks and atmosphere you will never have a dull moment here.

One of my favorite gay bars in NYC, very diverse great atmosphere and drink specials! Bartenders here are very friendly and pour a stiff drink! The service here has been very consistent every time Ive been here! 10/10

Not my.type of bar they need new d.j. the music is horrible..the strippers that were there that night looked strung out on coke...and what goes on in the bathrooms is beyond me the bathroom was more full then the bar was...drinks were good though. But the bartenders can be a bit rude and stuck up!

Great place.... cool staff great stiff drinks no pun intended. I have been coming here over 15 years.. also great male gogos 😉😉😉..lol great dive bar great place to start or end your weekend. Judgment free place... straight, bi, whatever friendly come as you are.

This is predominantly an African American gay hangout, I like the bar but do feel a bit unwelcome sometimes. I do feel like I get a bit of attitude from the bar staff sometimes because I am white and so I dont go often even though I think the bar itself is exactly what I usually like.

I was a regular here, more or less from the late 90s until I moved to San Francisco in 2004. I always had fun at the Hangar, especially because the guys are friendly, AND, the bathrooms super-cruise-y. Anyway, I always visit when I come into town for a visit, and although some things are different with the decor, its still a good place to have a hot and friendly low pressure experience. NOT like a lot of other places in the city. Chelsea for example, or even other places in the West Village. OR Castro for that matter, if we want to go bi-coastal about it :-)

Ive been a regular for many, many, many (you get my drift) years! The bar and bus staff are like family. Honorable mention to longtime bartenders Dino and Marke - who are no longer there but sorely missed!

The dj here tonight his name is amicus he is really moving the crowd. My people love him and my man Otto says that you need to be here Sunday night when he is spinning music. He has taken my mind off my problems. Otto finds his booty shaking to the stuff amicus be playing. Stuff from the 70s to today all mixed up covering tastes. The staff and bartenders is like family. We feel safe and at home here.

Ive been going to the hangers bar for over 20 years and have seen many staff changes and shifts in bartending and security. Unfortunately, it only takes one bad experience to shift my desire to want to come back when the new security staff, who is Latin, husky set guy at door on August 10th, which was my birthday to not want me to ever go back. Its a shame to see unnecessary aggressive behavior towards long term patrons. Ive had aggressive unfriendly demeanor from him before but last Friday was my last time I will return while he still works their.

Perfect and attentive bartenders (only two at the moment) who do an amazing job with such huge crowds. Very friendly patrons as well.

Its a cool place to hang out & make new friends. The drinks are excellent & theyre generous with the alcohol, lolAlways good music too.

As of 2016 one of the few remaining gay neighborhood bars.Nothing special, two bars with pool table and occasional entertainment.I do find it weird there is sometimes a cover charge.

Great place to have a couple of drinks and meet new people. Cannot wait to come back to NYC and have a drink there. Nice atmosphere and in a good location.

This is an African American and Latino gay hangout spots keep it that way theres so many gay bars that cater to the white gays every race has there own culture...

Definitely one of my favorite bars to go to. Especially during their happy hours. The specials are usually great.

Been going to this bar for a number of years...The atmosphere is comfortable; the bartenders are friendly and the drinks are inexpensive but VERY GOOD!

I miss Hangar a lot. One of the few inexpensive and relaxing places POC can go. Does anyone have any word on what’s going on? If they’re ever reopening ?

Very nice place to hang out for gay singles or gay couples. If your not into the rush. Great place for a game of billards. Very friendly atmosphere.

The bartending staff always treat patrons with respect. The drinks have gotten better. The specials offered have increased.

As a brown person , its nice to fall into a place thats colorblind! Strong drinks , nice mix .... Ages and race! #loveit

Always has great drink specials, good music, pool table and, a couple eye catchers each time I come.

Hated my last experience it used to be the place that I always wanted to go to on a Friday afternoon to have a drink but just hated the atmosphere and the snobbery that goes on inside there it needs to be a little bit more improved

Dont go there is not worth it is, I went in for the 1st time and they charged me $7.00 dollars for entrance and there was nothing interested they only had a muscular black gogo dancer which he was not attractive and the environment it was just weird and horrible dont go here you will wasted your money and your time drinks to expensive and the employee were rude 9/10/2016

Tv was the main attraction and every single person in there looked bored (sunday night) even though it was pretty full and the tv-music wasnt even that bad

Neighbohood watering hole... one of many along christopher street... and probably one of the most pleasant. however, i would not make it a destination... but if you happen to be in the area, drop by, you never know what you may find in there.
