When visiting, its a myst stop. Great music, friendly crowd on a Tuesday afternoon. The mimosa was perfect for this summer afternoon.

Our 1st stop in San Francisco. The bartender, Andy, is brilliant. He answers our inane touristy questions ad nauseum. Patient, kind, and sweet. He gave us tips on who, where, what to see/do while were here.

What an amazing bar. Monday night $5.00 margaritas are awesome. Great staff!

Nice Bar , friendly staff and customers. Had a great lunch time drink session here. May not be everyones kind of bar but we liked it.Fair prices and good service.

Love this place. Vacationing in SF and while visiting Castro district decided to take advantage of happy hour. Love love love it. I feel like at home aka NYC. Bartender is amazing, friendly and sexy. The crowd is cool and relaxed. Ame during the day. Maybe at night this place gets wild. Might stay to see the action. Haha. #thumbsup

Great place to drink and have fun at Castro. We went with a group of friends, the place was crowded but the service was good and the price for the beer also fare! There are some chairs to sit at the bar but mostly you just have to stay stand up.

I went here last week with some friends because of their awesome Happy Hour. The drinks were good and there was plenty of seating for everyone, but one of the bartenders (a short, older man with glasses) was incredibly rude to my friends and I. He had an awful attitude toward us and treated us terribly. We will definitely not be going back here again because no one should be treated badly like the bartender at 440 Castro treated us. There are plenty of other bars in the Castro that have friendly and welcoming bartenders unlike the short, older bartender here with glasses. If you are looking for a spot with friendly bartenders, this is not the place.

It seems there are less bars in The Castro then in the past. Thats unfortunate. This one, in the heart of The Castro is a smallish, narrow, crowded party with two bars filled with bar stools, dark corners for whispering secrets, an extremely handsome, somewhat older but active and friendly clientele, good drinks and on the nights I was there, fun retro vids and music without feeling dated. Youre sure to have a pleasant conversation with someone there in a short time. The bartenders are nice and helpful. Good lighting, fun environment. Great place to start your evening.

Ive known this bar under a few names, great atmosphere for a total dive bar, if this is your thing its a great time.

They have the best vibes. Went there for a night cap and loved the bartenders energy. Hi Tony! The Christmas lights were on point and the energy was flowing.

Great drinks. Strong. Very welcoming and accommodating. Had luggage with me and it was not an issue. Granted it was a slow time. Just a great bar. Go.

Underwear night is so much fun! Attended my first one and while it was overwhelming and hectic at times, everyone was generally pretty friendly and respectful enough to not grab or touch without consent.When its not underwear night, its still a fun, divey daddy bar to come into. Good music, very friendly staff who look out for the patrons and reasonably priced drinks! I cant say that Ive ever had a bad experience here and this is a reason why I choose to return to this Bar in particular.

Great vibe and cheap drinks, but after being there for only an hour or so we went back to coat check and the guy “couldn’t find” one of my favorite shirts. In retrospect and after reading other reviews I’m sure he stole it. Great bar and I will be back, but beware of coat check.

440 is the best and my local. The staff there are friendly, remember your drink and great you with a smile. Underwear night is Monday, Two Dollar Tuesday for beer is the best, 2 for 1 Wednesdays and drink specials every day. Low key, no attitude bar.

Nice and convenient bar, friendly staff. A bit loud sometimes but, well, this is when many people are within a tiny place.Outside sitting under a roof, so youll stay dry when it rains.

The best overall bar in the Castro for mature men. Great bartenders and strong drinks for those who prefer cocktails. Great beers on tap. Owner Gordie is often in house and is very friendly. Two for one cocktails Happy Hours Wednesday and Fridays after work. Bartenders Tony, Steve, Junior, Andrew and Heath are super friendly. Steve loves to show his chest all year long. Shane the Manager also super friendly.

A very mediocre bar with sad drunks and obnoxious straight bridal party types, and overall average drinks at best. It’s like a bad theme park for what the Castro used to be.

Great venue for those who want to drink, watch and interact with people. 440 has a DJ who manages the volume of the music very well. The entire time I was there, my friends and I were able to hold a conversation at a normal level. 440s staff is very friendly, but also very busy.

Ive been coming here for years and have never had a bad experience. Yesterday, I went in after few, (pre-Covid), years and being around people, made my day so much better. Thank you, 440 Castro, these days, I take my happy moments, where I can get them.

Great place to start out Saturday night. Quick service and friendly staff. Leans a little older but there was a fairly diverse mix of people out front on the patio.

I liked this place. I didnt stay too long because my boyfriend didnt like how much I was getting hit on... after all its more of a BEAR bar than a gay bar and when you got it... you got it.. (jk... or am I?) :)~The music was hot and there was lots of cool conversation. The drinks were nice and strong and the place was packed. Certainly looks like the place to be on the Castro! I look forward to going back to this bar the next time I am in town.Go over to Orphan Andys after a night of drinking and get your grub on!

Great gayborhood bar for the older make crowd and their admirers. Fairly popular any night of the week with drink specials most week days.

Usually a fun little bar is n the heart of the Castro that still caters to the gay crowd and isnt chasing revenue from a hip younger foreign crowd like some neighboring clubs. Always enjoy Monday nights here and have gone pretty regularly. Most of the staff is great and drinks are straightforward and fairly inexpensive for San Francisco. It can get packed on the occasional evening but sometimes thats what youre in the mood for, for the most part though it is reasonably happening and not suffocating. O e of the better bars in the area.

The atmosphere is great, beautiful and fun people, whats not good is the music, they have bad taste in electronic music.

I was not disappointed with the staff or the drinks. All of that was GREAT! I was very disappointed with the underwear theme. It seemed as though all the old Chicken Hawks of the Castro went there expecting the young guys to show up because it was unaware night. It didnt happen! If some young guy WAS to show up Im certain he wouldnt have to pay for drinks (IF he was willing to be mauled by old men all night)!

My favorite bar on Castro. Kind of a dive bar with friendly staff and clientele and cheap booze. I kept going back every night during my stay in SF and spent most of the time sitting outside. I made a lot friends there.

If your tried of boy and you are looking for men then you love this place. its a guys bar low key Friendly guys I had a lot of fun here on Halloween. and also During the day it a great place for a easy date. BTW the bartender are really hot !!!

Cute bartenders, cozy and small. Nice enough people and old fashion. More for the older types. Though I did notice being younger I felt more ostracized from the crowd.(loved or hated for being young) Than having a warm welcome altogether.

I consider 440 to be the unofficial bear bar in the Castro, but everyone is welcome. With an extra bar tucked in the back corner, drinks are easy to get even in the busiest of happy hours. It can get hot and stuffy in the back area, but the front corner gets plenty of air with the windows open. Stop in on a Monday for Underwear night, and Tuesdays feature $2 beers of any kind.

Remember when Dorothy skiped down the yellow brick road and there was a lion, a tin-man, a scare-scow, and todo the friendly dog? Well this bar is nothing like that. There are bears everywhere! Which can be kind of amazing depending on the crowd of men you like. This place has cheap pints and decent music for being a non-dance club. The bartenders are always half-naked... as well as the patrons and the bar in the back is a little less crowded so head that direction.It gets a little warm in there so be sure to breathe deep before entering. have fun!

Favorite place to grab a cheap beer. There are always good beer deals here. Good music and a friendly crowd too. Only downside is it gets so crowded sometimes its hard to move but its an old bar and I cant really fault it for that.

Been many years since i was there. had a great time with down to earth patrons and staff . one of the bartenders, Claudio, made my night especially fun. i wont be letting as many years oass vefire i go back again. infact i think it will become a san francisco regular for me when lm in town

Love this place. Great drinks and very friendly bartenders. Low keyed place with down to earth people. The DJ (Jim) is fantastic. Mixes music and videos flawlessly.

A gay safe space primary for locals. I am glad this place is keeping to the Castro roots and not changing into another gay disneyland site for tourist.

This bar is ok. Mostly older men come here but its quiet clean prices are ok. Doesnt smell like a bar with beer on The floor. Its near other bars and places to eat. Very viable from the street. I always see alot of guys in here. Not a hip place to go, but its quiet chill place to go with buddies

I adore this little bar. As a tourist I was made to feel very welcome by the super friendly and very cute staff. Some great offers on the drinks throughout the week. I highly recommend!

Same bartender last 3 times very rude guy was short dont know his name but dont go to him if you have a choice. Just asked for vaccine cert. Just to sit outside. And just was so rude. I said sure and showed but he again was just ryde.

Its a nice place to go have a drink, its not really my scene me being trans and all but if you are looking for a daddy or a bear 440 is definitely for you.

This is a cool bar with very chill crowd and environment. The people who here tend to be on a little on the older spectrum. First time here and had a good time. Definitely worth checking out.

Soooo good. Juicy meat. Real guacamole. The food was delicious. The little corn on the cob was sweet and the salsa was hot just how I like it.

Fun spot with occasionally great music but they let in sketchy people sometimes, I’ve had multiple friends have something stolen while here unfortunately. The videos of dudes from the 90s are also pretty lame.

I was hanging out with friends that work on a cruise,the guy at the door let the girls go in. But he left out the guy saying that he didnt carry a valid id. This was only discrimination. I try to convince the person at the door but he was completely rude. This was a horrible experience

Great staff. Very friendly. You can always meet new people here. Only complaint is it is too loud to have a good group conversation. You have to yell at times to be heard

The 440 just just denied me entrance because the African American was upset that I came out of Uber on underwear night. I have a photo to share if you would like to know who? I feel disrespected and will take my business elsewhere. Please get rid of him. He had no reason to be sooo disrespectful.

Trash, basic , unacceptable. My 3 friends and I were talking and hit the sign outside talking, and the guy at the door told us we couldnt get in cuz we hit the sign. I didnt travel from Fresno for this trash.

Just witnessed a man with autism get discriminated on and not let in because he came with his (SMALL) support dog... He wasnt given a chance to speak but was immediately discriminated and told to keep moving.

A bit older crowd however busy for the early afternoon. However this is my option for a monday on my vacation. Please make your own option on your visit.

I guess when they describe the Qbar as younger crowd they should specify that YOUNGER THAN YOUR GRANDPARENTS. But still nice atmosphere and I like the DJs mixes
