The venue is small but really beautiful and atmospheric. You can have close interaction with the band and have great experience. Staff is friendly and helpful. Sound is good, even though it could be better, but I think some small issues I heard could be due to the sound balance. In general, I had a blast, and I will definitely come here again!

I guess my first time being here was when they still had some of the post COVID protocols for screening people.I attend my latest concert here and I was next in line in security. Then I saw security getting their hands all over the ladies bags in front of me. I really said here, What are you doing? As I asked the question, Security started throwing out items without consulting the person. Security straight up said, How do you expect me to look through your bag?Let you keep your empty water bottle, that was nice.Loved it when they, as a industry, didnt run through peoples items.

Update 6/8/24 : So, they for reasons that still aren’t very clear they don’t charge the taxes or a %5 SF health mandate to guests on cash purchases, which isn’t well advertised at the bar, effectively creating a surcharge or penalty for card transactions, even though they’re not calling it that. Bring cash if you don’t want to spend an extra 14% on your drinks.Do you guys charge a fee for using card at the bar? I had a weird experience last night where 3 cocktails at $16 each came out to $54.76 total. The bartender mentioned taxes and some other fees, and said if we paid cash it would be cheaper but wasn’t specific about why. There wasn’t any visible notice on the menu or at the bar about a processing fee for card. The tax felt a bit unusual since many bars in the city factor taxes into the price, even with card payment. But then a processing fee with no signage or verbal warning before processing feels pretty shady. Subtotal was $48 so we ended up paying 14% in taxes and fees? It doesn’t sound right.Other than that experience, I really do like this venue. Great sound, ambiance, beautiful design, friendly and professional staff, very clean compared to some other live entertainment venues in the city, convenient location near lots of transit, parking garage across the street. It’s a great place and I look forward to seeing more shows there! Guess I’ll just grab drinks before and after to avoid the venue gouging, or remember to bring cash? I didn’t notice an ATM on-site but if you offer an incentive for cash payments that would be cool to have.

The event I attended was great, but I have mixed feelings about the venue. They dont have a coat check and dont allow umbrellas. And when I say they dont allow them, they mean put it in your car, drop it off at your hotel, or if you took public transportation, throw it away. They are not allowed inside at all. It feels very unwelcoming. However, I appreciated that they seemed to have ample ADA seating, although its on the sides. It can be difficult to clearly see the performance.Drinks are overpriced. At least the bathrooms were in great shape.

Aw, so many memories ! I used to party here in the 2010s when it was called Ruby Skye (locals will remember that), and I like it as a concert venue and party space. However, since I worl in the Native Sons building, which is attached to August Hall, it gets a little crowded on the elevator when there is a concert, and that is annoying. However, the space is lovely, and the acoustics are beautiful.

Excellent sight lines in a grand old venue that began life as The Sons of The Golden West building built circa 1912. The August in the title was the first name of the architect August Goonie Headman who designed this beaux arts beauty just after studying at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris circa 1908. A brochure commemorating the opening of the building in 1912, described the interior of the new, high-rise parlor: The building contains one of the largest and best-appointed assembly halls for dances, concerts and entertainments in California... Over the main assembly hall is the largest steel truss ever built in California, and which supports the floors above. The venue is now booked by he corporation Live Nation who start shows quite promptly, oft with no opening acts. They have abundant security and zealous door staff who will wand, pat down and confiscate chewing gum, and cameras. If you need to check any items you will have to go downstairs to the faux bowling alley, pay $5 per item, and be rewarded with additional re-wanding and patting down upon reentry. Sound is pretty good, views of the stage from the floor are good, or in the balcony if you can get in the front of the railings early, otherwise you wont see much once crowds bunch up. There are two bars accessible within views of the concert performance, one downstairs and a second upstairs as well near where the sound and lighting crews are stationed. Near the restrooms is a secret back bar overlooking Mason St that has a live tv monitor feed from the live room.

Absolutely gorgeous old style venue with a really great bar and staff! Beautiful space. I wish it weren’t the case, but this place unfortunately has the worst acoustics of any venue I’ve been to anywhere in the Bay, no matter where you stand in the space. Be sure to bring earplugs (they don’t provide disposables unlike many venues) and expect the sounds of your favorite act’s music to be turned to mud. Impressive lighting setup, but it’s a bit blinding and overkill for the size of the space.

I just love this place. Just wish is wasnt so far from home. I cover many acts in the Bay Area in the music scene and this is a real gem. Great acts come through its back doors and a lot of happy fans come and go through the front. Bigger acts will open the balcony, maximizing its 1,000 person cap. The second floor includes a second bar and typically a VIP area near the stage.Tucked in within the borders of Union Square its centrally located in downtown, with plenty of restaurants, bars, shopping, and ample transportation solutions. A lot of wonderful acts come through this historical venue so dont hesitate when they do. And dont be afraid to try something new! Go see live music even when you dont know who they are. I had my wallet stolen from my bag during a concert, and the person who stole it charged $100 at the bar during the show. I reported this to August Hall, and when I reported my card stolen and the transaction as fraud, August Hall chose to fight with my credit card company to pass off the transaction as legitimate, even when the receipt they submitted as proof was clearly not even close to my signature which my bank also noted. Again, August Hall was aware that I was a victim of theft at their establishment and they still chose to pass off a fraudulent transaction they processed with my stolen card as a valid transaction. I will never see a show here again, I’d rather wait to enjoy my time at a venue that respects their customers and practices good business.

Wow, I’m shocked. A music venue that has no respect for music. First of all, we were seeing a legend of music, a fantastic guitarist people look up to. But the venue couldn’t even get the sound right, even when there was no opener. A staff member was talking during a quiet song and was asked to “shh” by the crowd but continued to talk to his colleague. After intermission, the sound was finally fixed but the bartender decided it was his time in the spotlight and talked HELLA loud for the rest of the set, ignoring all the side eyes from the crowd. The fact that the venue had such a talented artist and had no respect for them is mind blowing!Note to artist: you should book the Chapel, Swedish American Hall, Cafe du Nord, The Independent, or any other venue in the city - they all respect music and artists.Despite the terrible environment, the artists we saw truly killed it. We will continue to support these amazing artists, just not at this venue.✌️Peace August Hall.

The old Ruby Skye, semi renovated! It no longer smells like wet carpet upstairs anymore! The tables formerly at the bottom (underneath the balcony) has been converted to a bar! Theres a mini bar towards the front of the room. Theres spacious seating (where tables might go?) Near the mini bar. Layout just makes more sense! Still retains the old theater decor where it counts--the backlit faces that line the top of the theater is still there! When I went last weekend, 10/19, for Black Madonna and Honey Dijon, the coat check ($2) was located in the bowling alley downstairs--interesting! The DJ setup was located just below the stage, which felt strange, but allowed for people to dance on the stage behind the DJ--fun! All employees encountered were very pleasant and attentive. I think the bottom line is that both floors are totally flat and the stage too low. good luck seeing the artist unless:1. youre very tall2. youre in the front few rows on the floor3. youre at the railing on the balcony4. you view the show using a phone on a selfie stick while wishing you had stayed home cause you could have been in your pyjamas by nowgiven all the amazing venues in SF well be avoiding this one until they build a taller stage and/or post a no greedy sightline douchebags rule at the balcony railing.

I told the security guard I had a medical device and couldnt go through the metal detector, it was ignored and I was forced to go through it. The people there dont care...they just want to collect a paycheck and sit around doing nothing...they are worthless and probably would run if there actually was a security threat.

Saw White Lies here for an evening concert. The door staff was well informed and friendly, and they made waiting outside a breeze. As soon as you enter the venue you can tell this place is unlike anywhere else. The classic aesthetic they have clashed in a beautiful way with the modern synth rock show i was watching. The founders of this place did a good thing by coming together and forming August Hall. Will deffinately check out another show here!

This is the reincarnation of Ruby Skye minus the slide. We went to private event so if you had your ticket, east to get free on Eventbrite no waiting in line. Great full bar, lots of room to dance, even found a seat, decent catered food and open bar whats not to like, too loud of course!

Bomb! Saw conan gray and the space was super small so we got to be up close! I thought it was gonna be huge but it was perfect sizing! I loved the cool lighting and being able to touch conans hand without barricades in the way! There was water when we got in so i got to refill my water bottle. Ac was blasting so we were freezing but then during the performances it wasnt too bad. Small but roomy people were standing on the ground some on the balcony. Girl in red crowd surfed! Awesome space.

This is not a review, just a question. August Hall does not open until late April 2018. How can two people rate August Hall a one in February when August Hall will not even open for another two months. This seems mighty unfair. (Full disclosure - I wanted to post this comment & query without any stars until I had actually attended a music event at August Hall, but had to click on stars in order to post. My stars are based on how beautiful the rendered pictures are of the space and the hard work that has gone into transforming and preserving an historic building. I love the pictures and look forward to enjoying shows at August Hall in the near future. Will write or update a review in a few months.)late May update: Have since been to August Hall and the experience exceeded expectations. Beautiful space. Excellent sound. Great group. (Bomba Estereo --- so, so good). Eclectic and fun crowd. Amazing reboot of a classic San Francisco venue. Bravo to everyone involved.

Security was terrible they were rude and man handled me trying to push me out the door . The reason was being this venue does not let anyone under 21 out and renter. I asked someone if I could they said yes without telling me I needed to be 21 so it was the mistake of an employee ! And they wouldn’t let me back and and tried to shove me out the door and told them to stop for a minuet since my sister was still inside by herself they told me it wasn’t there problem and I needed to still leave or they would call the cops I will never return to this venue again ! I will say later I called the security company and they said all I needed to go was speak to the manager of the venue and he may be able to let me back in but the security people neglected to let me know this information . Running a business mean giving someone solutions not excuses ! P.S reason for going outside was because my feet hurt and needed to change my shoes

I purchased a VIP ticket for an event because there were no regular tickets left, but I really wanted to see the DJ. The VIP ticket promised special entrance line, but when I went there there was no line. I asked twice the staff manning the line where the VIP line was, and both times they said there was no VIP line and I have to wait in the regular line.Since they failed to deliver on any of the promised VIP benefits, I later kindly asked them to refund the difference between a regular & VIP ticket, since that seemed reasonable. They blamed me for any confusion and refused to refund the difference.

On the night I came here, the crowd was young and flashy, shouting to each other, taking videos of the performance and selfies of their friends. That particular night hosted two well-known house music DJs, but the venue is probably only appropriate for pop music, with bright lighting, a weak sound system, and overall highschool-ish vibe. To be honest, those features make it a poor venue for any music. Just avoid.
