During the week of our sons UA graduation we met with a group of his friends for a happy hour. They had reserved a table outside and had plenty of space for everyone who attended. The atmosphere is lively and casual, with a sports bar feel, but also family friendly. The food is a HUGE step ABOVE bar food. I ordered a roasted beet salad with chicken and absolutely LOVED IT!!! The chips with salsa and beer battered fries were also ordered for the table to share, and they came in quantities large enough to feed the crowd with some leftover. The staff members were attentive and efficient, keeping drinks filled and food supplied. They kept up with additional guests as new ones arrived, being sure that those guests had the opportunity to place drink and food orders shortly after arrival. There is indoor and outdoor seating available, but how can you pass up the opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining in Tucson. Fans and misters are available during the hot hours of the day. This is one of my favorite places to eat near the UA campus.
Loved how clean this place was. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The food here was spectacular, the adult drinks are also very tasty. The burgers are fresh, big and full of veggies, cheese and sauce. The fries were seasoned perfectly and perfectly crisp. Loved the atmosphere as well as the helpful servers. Great stop for dinner to start your night on the strips.
Very good restaurant and best location right in middle of UA campus restaurant/bar area. Service is attentive and friendly. Food is really good many many items to choose from. Beer is great. If you want to sit outside you can feel part of campus life while you eat/drink or else sit inside in the AC.
Below average, disappointed that even the fries came out stale and as if they were cooked two days ago. Burger tasted fine but nothing special, Buffalo sandwich lacked sauce and the chicken barely had any meat z it. I wouldn’t go there again unfortunately.
We were there on February 28. 3024. Our waitress was Jenna. She was great. Our table had the Philly cheese steak, grilled chicken salad, and Baja tacos 🌮Not your cozy type restaurant, but more of an open air type. We were inside as it was too cold outside. Restaurant, nothing special, but food was good
I have been to Gentle Ben’s many times and have usually had a great time (eg 5 stars), but today for lunch, it was a 4. Nothing that bad, but a “medium” burger should not be 100% brown and a bit dry. I would have sent it back, but we were a group of 6 and everyone else seemed ok, so I really did not want to sit there with no food as the others ate, nor see them try to politely wait while I waited for my “re-do”.Service was good at least!VictorB
Maddy is always absolutely amazing and attentive. So glad to see her work recognized with the move to the bar! You can’t go wrong with Gentle Ben’s. Food, drinks and atmosphere always on point! My favorites are the desert sky cocktail, potato skins and Caesar Salad. They have never let me down, and if service doesn’t meet your expectations(which is not normal), ask for Troy, one of the managers, and he will always take care of you. He’s been so good to me during my visits! You can tell it’s a great place to work by all the long term staff and smiles!
This casual bar surprised us as the food was great! Place is simple but seemed to always have people; especially younger groups. We ordered chicken wings to share which were nice and then I got the western burger which was delicious; the quality of the meat was great!!! They had all kinds of local beer brands which was nice. I recommend for a casual friend get together. Prices are average.
I come here all the time and I just wanted to mention how great the staff and the managers are. They helped me get exactly what I need and made sure everything I needed was attended for at all times. Great service and definitely one of the better restaurants to dine in at on University Boulevard.
The food was very good. The service was good not great. I was very unhappy when Bill was brought to be paid via visa card the wait staff automatically added 20% tip. First NO customer decides. Secondly is rude to presume you have the privilege to demand how much. The management should pay you more if your unhappy.
Came in for brunch and I ordered breakfast which was delightful. My wife ordered the grilled chicken Ceasar salad and there was a quite a bit of gristle in there so she did not enjoy it so much. The peach Bellini was very good though. Great location and the outdoor patio area is very nice with the misters.
The burgers were some of the best. Very attentive staff and leadership very managers like Rylie. Leaders set the pace and Rylie greeted the customers and treated us like we were regulars even though it was our first time.
We had the Nachos, Ahi Tostada, and Carnitas Quesadilla - all delicious. Good selection of beer and specialty drinks the girls loved. Im a whisky drinker, typically an Old Fashioned or neat. I tried both with Makers Mark which is my go to whisky. 99% sure someone is watering it down. I dont think Id order whisky there again.
Stopped into Gentle Ben’s for a couple of beers and a bike to eat after we dropped off bicycles at Sonoran Cycles Tucson just down the block. We had spent the day riding the loop so were ready to kick back and relax for a bit. The beer list is strong (brews from Barrio Brewing) and the food was excellent. Nicely prepared and well presented. Capped off a great day in Tucson.
Great find for supper after the bowl game! The service was quick but our food took some time to get out. It was about 20-30 minutes, but the pretzel sticks and quesadilla I ordered were delicious. Plus its a microbrewery and looked like it had a pretty wide selection. Would recommend for anyone who is near the university and willing to pay $10-$15 for a meal!
The food is mid, the drinks are mid but the atmosphere is lively!EDIT:changed my review from 3 stars to 2 stars, originally I wrote my review because there was nothing phenomenal about this place but the atmosphere was great! I came back today to give it another go since I know places have bad days sometimes, sat at the bar because I know the wait staff are busy and sitting at the bar is hassle free, my food came no joke 35mins after I ordered it. When my soup came it was COLD! I asked a manager walking by whether or not my soup was supposed to be cold and he laughed and said no it definitely is not. He switched it out which is great but this is twice in a row now where something has gone wrong with my order. I don’t even be looking for things to go wrong but twice in a row?? Get it together guys!My friends and I love coming here for the atmosphere, but they’ve proven time & time again that the service of food or sometimes just service in general is abysmal. It’s honestly just better to go somewhere else on University Blvd or even 4th.Pictured is the second soup that had the avo in it.Also they brought the second soup back with avocado when I specifically asked for no avo because I have an allergy. So my time was wasted and I was given cold food. Yikes guys!Giving it two stars because the waitress was really nice this time and tbh not her fault my soup was cold. It’s such a shame because they have one of the best vibes!
Breakfast burrito was okay. Tortilla was a little thick and sticky. Eggs were just okay. Bloody Mary was also a little thin but alright. Service also okay, not terribly engaging.
Food is mediocre and overpriced, staff is friendly, and the drinks arent bad. Definitely a good place if youre in greek life and want to be in a very college aged crowd, but thats not for everyone.
Great service, good food, right in the heart of the strip just outside of U of Ariz, great place to have lunch or dinner.
We are partners with them on the facilities management end of things, and everyone at Gentle Bens has always been kind and helpful. Great work everyone!
If you are looking for a WOW place to host your private event, contact Katie M. to coordinate the Upper Bar Patio or Upper Bar Club! We held our daughters Sweet 16th here on the entire Upper level & it was AMAZING! No one could believe we had gotten such a cool space in the awesome U of A area! The staff and managers were incredible - Eric & Katie made everything top notch! Every guest raved about the catering spread! Delicious! We are fans for life! Every age group absolutely loved the event! You will not be disappointed!
Ive dropped in here perhaps a half dozen times in the last year when Im in the area and want to catch a game. The bartenders, supervisors, and door greeters are all friendly, seemingly conscientious, polite, and attentive - without being solicitous.Theres a nice selection of bottled beer, drafts, and seasonal selections. Its a full bar, of course, and Ive noticed designer cocktails on their bar menu.Seating is indoor/outdoor with a ringed bar that serves both, and the outdoor bar area is expansive - perhaps larger than the indoor seating. A good portion overlooks University Ave for the amateur ethologists and cable car enthusiasts. A separate indoor dining room is available, as well as an upstairs bar area.Huge televisions are everywhere, and the staff is polite and helpful in accommodating requests for various channels and CC.I dont believe I have ever sampled the food, nor the upstairs bar area. The mens room is clean and well-kept!*This is a large, clean super sports bar within steps of a very large university. The clientele is what youd expect, and the folks are fun-living, but Ive never seen any unruliness, nor minor children! This operation is clearly run by experienced restauranteurs who hire, train, and supervise the best young workers, wholl then go on to become our future professionals.Nice work to all of you!_____________*Wonder if a restaurants kitchen is clean? Look at the bathroom.
Just tried GBBs. Underwhelmed. Massively underwhelmed. Ambiance: 1.5. There is NO AMBIANCE. It is just a space with chairs. No personality. At all.Service: Our waiterperson Jenna was excellent. She was personable, attentive, sweet and she got us. We ordered a burger well done. It came out barely medium....blood and hamburger juice puddled on the plate. Yes, puddled. It was gross. Out awesome waiterperson Jenna was as grossed out as we were. Sent it back and the replacement was perfect. We were not compd anything...we felt a comp of a beer, a burger, something compd was warranted. Now the good, OK, the great....the Citrazona IPA was off the chart perfection. Well balanced hop and citrus, not too strong, so you could plow through a couple and still function. An amazing beer in a ho hum local. I guess college kids dont notice the other stuff. We will NOT BE BACK. I hope management will respond with some kind of outreach, something.
I stopped here once a couple years ago and I loved their mocha stout so much. I came again today, and the stout is still delicious, lighter than I remember it. I tried the raspberry ale and it was also delicious.More importantly, I tried the food this time and found some really yummy things. The brussel sprouts appetizer was to die for. I will get that every time I go there - so good! The wings were ok, but not something Id get again. I saw the artichoke dip go by and was instantly jealous, it comes in a giant bread bowl and looks amazing. Also saw the nachos go by and they looked like a nice big pile.Service was speedy and kind despite the full house.10/10 would recommend.
Most of the time this place is excellent. Tequila cilantro wings are amazing. I do think they over price them but they are very good. Beers are pretty good as well
My daughter and I go here a lot. It’s always a good time and the food is pretty much always good.
Had dinner with a friend. This was the second time I had visited. Located in close proximity to the University of Arizona. Casual atmosphere. Very nice porch for when temperatures are more moderate. Service this time was outstanding - friendly, attentive. The waitress was engaging. The menu was more interesting than I had remembered. Food quality was excellent. Very enjoyable.
I havent been here in years. We stopped by for some drinks and appetizers before a show. The place was pretty full. Service was spot on, see got a couple of cocktails which were delicious, and the hipsterville hazy IPA I got was great as well. We only ordered beer battered fries, they came in piping hot. Actually, my friend got a burger they looked delicious. I would definitely try Gentle Bens again.
Not sure about the story of this brewery but the name says Brewing and the beers they offer are from Barrio Brewing Company and Moto Sonora Brewing Company, I was expecting beers from this place as they are called a brewery.Ordered a flight, despite the place being almost empty, they said they didnt have enough glasses for the flight so instead gave us double shot glasses which are 3 oz instead of the normal 4 oz beer flight glasses.
The food was good but our server, Grace, was better.Edit: I very very rarely give 5 stars.
Andy was very accommodating to our group of adults and kids. The food was great and service was too!
I spent a lot of time here during my college days but had only ever eaten some late night bar food. When for a real meal a few months ago and didnt have the best experience. However, the manager really stepped up and fixed the situation. I was impressed with the customer service he offered. So, for that reason, we decided to give it another try. Had a great time. The service was good. The food was good. Huge portions! If you are near the UA, its a good stop.
Fun place just outside the UA campus. The service was great and our server was very attentive. Everyone in our group enjoyed the food, although they were out of pulled pork, so had to go with a backup choice. Thanks!
Fun place to eat. Popular with the University students but us Seniors can enjoy the food and atmosphere.
I was recently in Tucson for a work event, and I actually ended up eating here twice while in town since it was close to the hotel. I went once for lunch and once for dinner. The food was great, and the servers were very attentive both times.
Staff was great! Drinks were delicious- I loved my Bloody Mary. Food was good, but the tacos had too much sauce. Id order sauce on the side next time. Burger was good, a bit more done cooked than expected, but good. Fries were really good and those that ordered a quesadilla at our table enjoyed them- a carnittas and another with just cheese. The tortilla soup was very well liked. We had a table for 6 and sat outside. It was really nice. Hostess was great, and our server was also. Gave 4 stars because of the excessive sauce on our tacos. Otherwise all was really good.
. Been stopping by here when we visit Tucson( every year for the last 20 years and it’s other family member Barrio ) the food this year and last was sub par and the kicker this year was the 7.50 local pint from their own company (prices not posted on the paper menu that had for the weekend). Always used to enjoy our stops at Bens and Barrios ( food was great but it’s not worth the cost for what you get .Thought they had a off day last year when the food was bad but I guess all good things come to an end. Adios Barrio .
Hands down the best place in town. We had Jo as a bartender and server and she was amazing.
Ive been here before and come to accept that service is mediocre, typically slow but oh well. Our last visit was disappointing on a few levels. First, our food was served at a decent time but lacked seasoning, and the tables didnt have salt/pepper (which isnt a huge deal) but it would have been nice to have something to spruce up my Diane burger. While we were enjoying our meal in the outdoor area pigeons flew in and one landed above us on a ledge in the patio corner. It kicked up a bunch of feathers and bird droppings that landed in my wifes beverage, plate and who knows where else. I informed the server of what happened and asked for new fries because of the droppings. He did bring new fries but were burnt and really unenjoyable so she didnt eat then. I reluctantly finished the last few bites of my meal but was grossed out by what could have been on my plate. The third and most disappointing experience was while we were out in the patio, someone on the rooftop was dropping metal or heavy items onto the metal roof making loud slam noises. I wonder why they couldnt have built the stage( or whatever it was) up there before operation hours.Overall the experience was very disappointing and leaves me wondering if I should even try to visit again.
Ella was awesome, her knowledge of the beverages truly aided my decision-making when choosing a cocktail.
This was my first time eating at this establishment. I wasnt at all wowed by my experience. I ordered the California burger. Initially it looked nice. As I cut into my burger the bottom bun was so charred that I had to saw through it. Why didnt I send it back? Im not that person. And on top of that our waitress didnt ask how our meal was. Besides that the cook already knew they burned my food. It was very obvious. So that alone told me that it wouldnt be worth it to complain. We sat on the patio and were attacked by flies. I was under the impression that if they had outside seating they might have some sort of pest deterant system. I was wrong. So in light of this experience I dont feel that it would be worth a second visit or a good review. Over priced for no good reason.
Arrived for lunch shortly after opening. About five other tables were occupied. Our sandwich order seemed to take a longtime for so few customers. Server was pleasant but never came back after serving our food to check-in. Sandwich quality was good. The cooling misters werent really needed and the spray wasnt evaporating fast enough, making the table, our phones and glasses wet.
Great food and great atmosphere. Jo provided a great service and will be coming back.
Classic college bar/restaurant. Servers are the best. Ahi Tacos are awesome. The burgers are awesome, especially the specialty ones, try the Jalapeno one. The spicy chicken wings are spicy AF but the sauce is so savory and delicious. Get the wings that are bright watermelon color. What else. Its all good. Just eat and enjoyEDIT: might knock a star off if they start replying to reviews with AI generated replies, smh
Place has a good sports bar vibe. We got there mid evening and luckily there were still tables available. Service was prompt and friendly. Skews very student, of course, being next to campus
Your basic burgers, sandwiches, beers, on University Avenue steps from the campus. Mostly a student hang out, but theres a big outdoor/street side patio, usually with a mixed crowd (including older people like me!). Good, friendly service. Recommended as a chill place for a drink at the end of the day...
Okay so the new club upstairs is lit and popping. We love this bar because it’s always adorable and woodland themed. That’s great. Who doesn’t love giant bear statues greeting you? Everyone likes it.
Nice place for a bite and great location to U of A. Basic place with college bar vibe. Has been remodeled so now much brighter and cleaner. Service was good and food is great and the Cheeseburger was amazing!
Hannah was on her “A” game and service was TOP NOTCH! Give that girl a raise!
Solid beers, great atmosphere, and saw Lil Texas upstairs. 10/10 would rage again.
The bouncer stated I was too intoxicated to come in. What’s funny is I only had 3 drinks before I came there (over a span of 5 hours). He stated I was swerving walking up. Surly was not! Out of a group of 6 of us that was drinking much more than me, he denied me. The manager was right there and saw everything had no backbone and never tried to resolve any situation. You would think if I’m not “swerving” the whole 5 minute conversation with the manager and bouncer, they would admit that they were wrong. They literally made 6 customers walk to another bar and bring their money too. Unfortunate.
College hangout, very busy & loud. Pulled pork sandwich, not as I remembered it (some pieces were burned & hard. Usually, this sandwich is very yummy. Was too loud to hear others at my table so couldnt really enjoy their company as I would have liked. Worth a try though.
Ella was the best server. Food great and knows the beverage and suggestions.
We visited Gentle Bens.for lunch and was very happy with the service. We sat on the patio and it was nice with the heater. Our waitress was really nice! The food was great! Kids meals were good and reasonably priced. The Philly Cheese Steak was awesome! Bens House Salad with Chicken is a huge salad! The Mimosas are a definite must to get 2! Just perfect!😁
Avery was a great waitress! Good place for good vibes & good food!
Great food, fun atmosphere and AWESOME service!!! Our server, Gabby (Gahbby) made great recommendations and she has an awesome personality!! Do yourself a favor and put them on your bucket list as you will not be disappointed.
Great food. It can be a very busy place. A lot of college students eat there. It can get very loud. My wife and I go there about once a month or more. They always have something relevant on the TVs and you can also ask them to tune to a specific sport, but most of the time they have what you want to watch on already. The staff has always been nice and pleasant. Occasionally, when they get slammed they get behind. That is totally normal for any restaurant though and the food has always been worth it!
Great for a bite with a couple of friends! Ive had their nachos and a couple of their burgers and have not been disappointed. A bit pricier in comparison to other spots around here, but not too bad overall.
We had a good time it was so full that we had to sit outside. Food was good and so was the service.
Cool place really close to the UofA campus and so many other spots. Service was great and the drink selection was good. Gets a bit crowded with college folk but what can u expect. If you wanna avoid the crowds, get there early.
What a great find today for lunch! My parents live in Green Valley and after walking around the University of Arizona, we walked around the main entrance looking for a place to eat. Once I looked at the menu, I knew it would suit everyone in our party. We had a great server in Yasmin and she was very good at refilling drinks without being asked to do so and was on top of anything we requested. Great food! My God the pulled pork sandwich was amazing! Loved the atmosphere and the cost was very manageable, which just added to the great experience we had today. When at the university for a visit or just looking for a great place to eat, go to Gentle Ben’s! P.S. - I am kicking myself because I wanted to inquire about purchasing a shirt before I left. Well, there is always next time!Bryan P. McNamaraRoseto, PA
Exceptional service for a bar in a College Zone, food can be hit or miss, basic bar menu. Staff are amazing, security very professional and on top of it!
Nice spot, friendly staff. Ordered tortilla soup which was very tasty but unfortunately served just below lukewarm.
Came here for TNF Sat for probably last 6 minutes of second quarter - went completely unaddressed by the bartender or the bar back Staff just small talks amongst themselves and I was completely avoided with a bar at 60% capacity Bar staff and management should be overhauled with people who have customer service skills
Very slow and low quality food for a high price. Place looks good. We gör take out so service excludes the servers.
We visited in May & ended up here twice. They are conveniently located around the corner from the University Marriott. Our bartender was fantastic, so were the drinks & appetizer. This place has a laid back vibe and at night you can head upstairs to dance to a DJ. Fun place! The cookie dessert is delish for when that sweet tooth kicks in..hits the spot & great for sharing. I didnt get any pics of Gentle Ben the bear but hes waiting for you to stop by and say hi :)
Hannah was my server this time and she was good!
Even tho extremely busy before U/A basketball game, service was great!A party of 6, we each ordered a different entree & no complsint from anyonePart of mine was tortia soup & it was the best I have ever had ... loaded with chicken, avocado, & spices! Will be back soon!!!
Very unconventional brewery location and atmosphere, seems like it should be a cheap drink college bar based on the location. Beer choices were ok, the pale I had was alright.
Ella was a great server and very tentative as the drinks got low
Man I was disappointed being here my first time!I got the burger and fries and the fries were pretty stale and the burger bun was a bit dry and stale.Husband got French Dip sandwich and found a blonde hair in it.Service was prompt but not very personable.I shouldn’t have passed up No Anchovies 😩Two UofA Alum
Ordered carry out and the was delicious! It was so good I forget to take photos. I had the French dip and husband had a pork sandwich. We will definitely be going back for a dime in meal next time!
Burgers have stale buns and I know this because I sent back my first burger because it was under cooked. Both burgers had stale buns. Additionally if I was the owner I’d replace the manager. People were told to sit outside when 25% of the inside tables were open the entire time we were there. (And this was an evening that was windy and cold)
Tonights visit was simply for the dessert! Three of us shared the ice cream, brownie, cookie dessert - I think it was called the grizzly ($11). It was HUGE! Weve been before and always like the food and the beer selection is good. Great atmosphere - they recently remodeled the interior. Not sure I love the new look though.
One of a kind Tucson gem. Burger was excellent. Only complaint is, at night the upstairs becomes a dance club. Thats fine, but the music was sooo loud I couldnt hear the people I was sitting with. And we were downstairs.
Food was delicious, staff was excellent and honestly for as busy as it was, the food was served quickly!I wish I remembered my servers name. She was sweet, attentive and had just made honor roll again. Great kid!
Did not like food on a weekday afternoon. (per request from the owner for details: ordered a chicken taco where the chicken in it were too salty to taste, and my colleague ordered a burger which apparently had some hard rubbery piece in it. We also had to wait for about 10 min at the front desk for some one to guide us to a table to sit. Over all did not like the experience. It was my first time, but I appreciate the owner writing back here and so, hope to have a better experience/ food next time. Thanks!)
We live this place when we are on the AZ Campus. Young people servers/staff are always friendly and accomodating; food is consistently good, although the cooks make minor mess more frequently than they should; however, servers always handle it professionally. Highly recommend but be prepared for the crowds and noise level.
My wife and I traveled to Tucson to visit my daughter for a weekend. We ended up here both nights. What a blast. Loud music upstairs, however not for the young adults. Bens Bomb is a must have. What a drink! Food was great. Server was attentive and very kind. Lots of TVs for the sports fans. Overall, the best University Restaurant.
Tasty food. Busy place. Really made an effort to get my order out quickly as we as a group were on a time limit. No problem for separate checks. Helpful and friendly staff. College environment. Lots of bustle. Night life is lively and fun, especially weekends. It is right by the light rail. Clean bathrooms. Worth a visit!
Meh. Food was edible but not great. Served luke warm. We had three people in our party, all three had different meals with same result. Location is good. Right next to the University of Arizona. Service was good.
Clean place with a decent number of TVs for watching the game. Food is just ok and drinks are expensive for a college bar (not Old Town Scottsdale bad but not far off).
Ive been coming here since 1972, in the old house; it remains great. My son & I carried on the tradition today. The jalapeno, bacon cheeseburger was huge plump and delicious; the 3 large chicken tenders were cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside juicy on the inside. Fries are better than average. Waiter was quick and efficient.; food order arrived promptly. Now that school is out, I plan to visit more often. Still delicious, quick, friendly service.
Recent visit food was great The Manager and waitress great service, chicken alittle on the done side.Beer Ice cold
Great place next to the University with fair prices on most of the menu items. Of course, being right next to campus, the crowd is often students and later at night it gets very noisy, but the food is great. Their Ruben sandwich is the best Ive had, and you cant go wrong with a pazookie for dessert!
Great atmosphere and good food. Love the front patio looking out over the University area and people. I had the pulled pork sandwich... it was a specialty... excellent! Ive had plenty of pulled pork, and I must say this was high standard. I added the optional grilled jalapenos for a kick and some provaolone cheese... great additions... give them a try! The Pale Ale was an excellent pairing. They had about 10 on tap to choose. They were remodeling the inside bar... no effect on us outside. The service WAS a bit slow... it wasnt a big UofA night, so I assume it would be even slower on a big college night. I was there with my Freshman and we both enjoyed!
I had to make a delivery here. Since i was there I ordered a pulled pork sandwich. Meat is the best tasting. Will definitely be going back when not working.
Thank you Joan for great service. #worldtraveller. Food amazing. From some Cannucks.
The Brussels sprouts were excellent, this ice cream came without the toppings as it was ordered, but otherwise great with lots of serious people watching from the patio!
Thank you for your extraordinary service. And delicious food! 💗💗💗
First time in Tucson and my fiance and I stopped at this place for an early dinner. The food was alright, the service was poor though. Our server was very slow and acted like he was high. While the food was nice and hot when we got it, it took a long time to get it. We received no utensils or napkins, even after asking, so it was hard to eat and very messy. Wed go back if someone else paid but we wouldnt spend our own money here again.
I had something different and I really enjoyed it. Everybody needs to eat there. Im a pot skins guy but I found a new dish Artichoke dip in a bread bowl. So good!!!
Great place if your looking for a burger and watch sports.
The food is really delicious and the atmosphere is super cool. located right on university with an upstairs that overlooks the popular street makes it a great destination for u of a students and hungry locals. also home to a great dj scene and fun bar. highly recommend
Great place to hang on Game Day. Food is decent for a brew pub, staff is attentive, management is friendly even though they deal with crowds of (sometimes rowdy) college students. Mixed drinks, beer, wine- Margs not made from mix- a huge plus in my book!
I cant really say much about the food, only eaten there a few times with a big group of people and had no real issues, the food was food nothing that really stood out to me.The only reason I go is on the weekends for the bar upstairs. The beer they make themselves is actually pretty good but by no means great, its also relatively cheap when the 2 for 1 deals are going on but if they arent it can be an expensive outing. Overall the service at the bar is OK, theres A LOT OF ROOM (sitting or standing) and they have awesome heaters when it gets cold in the winter to still be outside and be comfortable. Its got a DJ most times and a dance floor but I would go somewhere else if thats what you are looking for. People need to remember this is a college bar and a good place to meet up with friends to have a few drinks.
I’ve only been to Bens twice, but both times were awesome. I’m only now writing this review because of the server I had, Haley, was fantastic. She was quick about checking on us, made sure we were taken care of, and never left us wondering how we were supposed to find service. I will always recommend this restaurant to friends and family.
Was hanging out with coworkers this past Friday and sat at the bar where Steph and Brenden were working. They were both awesome and good company as always! Beer and drinks are great and so is the food, staff, and service. The management is always friendly and helpful. This is the kind of place where people remember you and, in some cases, what you like to order. This is a regular spot for us for a reason!
Not a brewery, more of a highly obnoxious nightclub vibe.
Have been coming here for a while but lately the service has gotten worst. We waited over an hour for our food which never arrived. Our drinks were never refilled and we sat at a table that was drenched by the misters the entire time. I went to a manager and he was absolutely unprofessional and discourteous. He rolled his eyes at me when I told him we have been waiting over an hour and still havent gotten our food and we wanted to leave and not worry about the food, he told me to show him what table, I did and all he said was ill take care of it and that was it. We got up and left. Disgusted😤
Loved it! Waitress was super nice and attentive. Music was a perfect volume and I really love how the owner handles noise complaints from customers 🤣🤣 those are the vibes I love and will definitely be returning.
I ordered delivery and the food was embarrassingly disappointing. 2 stars because the person who answered the phone was nice. Not only was the food cold (despite me living only a few blocks away), but every dish was a surprisingly poor version of basic common appetizers. The beer sponges are two pretzels with pretty gross dip (maybe its better when not cold?) sold at premium stadium pricing although they are barely cheap stadium quality. This dish is nowhere near the level of pretzels with beer cheese from Union Public House, Firebirds Grill, or any number of other Tucson restaurants (all of whose pretzel dishes are slightly lower priced).I had spent (what to me) was a lot of money purchasing a few small items on delivery to cheer myself up from what has been objectively the worst day of my life so far (really terrible medical news). The only thing this order was good for was helping me finally get the tears out. I was just incredibly disappointed, but it was a fitting meal for a terrible day.
Super busy. Per usual. But got 6 of us us in and out in timely manner to make our show. Shared nachos and spinach artichoke dip. I enjoyed a taste mojito. Light and refreshing.Good staff.
You have got to be kidding me with this place. From out of town and was recommended. My party of only 3 were greeted and seated but no one came to our table for 20 minutes. We at this point just made a decision to just leave. Not even a hello or we will be right with you. I get when establishments get busy but you MUST acknowledge every guest. Poor customer and will never go back!
I went with a large group from a conference. The food was good but service wasnt so good. When food ran out from buffet table they werent ready to put out the next dish and many people had to wait in line to get food. About 5 or more minutes. By the time they ate it was time to go back to conference.
This is a fun place w good food and its super close to campus! The outdoor seating is nice (even tho its a million degrees out) since they have misters and shade. Would definitely recommend. They also offer carry out, and mine was ready pretty much exactly when they said it would be! (I recommend the carne asada quesadilla)
2 days of rain, outdoor patio is all flies and pigeons. Music is pretty loud, hard to visit with your table. Burger buns were black and burned on 2-3 of the orders. Well give it 1 more visit, but not impressed on first impressions.
Great happy hour!!! And wonderful food!! Especially if you like appetizers and great mixed drinks! The atmosphere if also wonderful and the servers are quick and friendly! And its in the heart of the college area, so if you are in to that scene this is the place to go!!!
All there food is great but can work a little more on service. Last time we were there is took the waiter 25minutes to take our order. Then after we got our meals I asked for more water and guacamole, he forgot about it and I asked him again. I didnt get me water or guacamole until I finished my food. Bi the food was delicious either way
Gentle Bens is becoming a must stop place for me when I visit Tucson, especially being so close to the University. The menu is constantly evolving and improving and the ingredients are always fresh. Most recently I tried the Firestarter burger and I have to say it was tasty as hell with just the right amount of heat. They didnt skimp on the jalapeno bacon and the patty was thick and juicy which kept me craving each bite. I also tried the Gentle Bens IPA which was a solid beer that exceeded my expectations and paired nicely with the burger. The ambiance is nice and the outdoor patio is a great place to kick back and enjoy the great Tucson weather. The service staff was friendly and attentive and the management was most accommodating.
If I could give this 0 stars I would. Arrived with a friend near 1 pm today. We were promptly seated after asking to sit outside. It wasnt very busy at all. Servers walked by and smiled but never spoke. After well over 5 minutes one of the servers asked if we had been waited on. I said no and she left, then returned in another couple minutes and said a server, male, would be there in a couple of minutes. We waited 3 more then left. There are plenty other restaurants there that would gladly take our money, and we found one, seated and waited on quickly. This is poor training on management. Zero stars!
Great variety of tasty food should make it easy for everyone to find something they like and very friendly service! Cocktails are delicious, nice selection of beer, and you must try the beer battered fries!
Always reliably good food and service. They do outstanding at accommodating our 15+ Meetup group on Mondays or Tuesdays when we come here some months. My favorites are any burger or the Rueben. Often I can eat just the appetizers as they are all great.
Really good place to sit out on the patio, even in the summer. Awesome menu! Food was tasty and they have a good selection. I didnt have one of their beers but Ive been told that they are fantastic.
I like this restaurant. We have eaten here a few times. Great bar crowd. Perfect if you are interested in local college sports.
If I can give this place a negative stars, I would certainly give them. The food is absolutely terrible, service was bad, the manager in particularly argued with me regarding their policy and she kept on insisting that she and this entity treat everyone with respect and doesn’t discriminate with anyone even before me implying that I was being discriminated. I felt like I was being singled out and discriminated after that encounter. Clearly their staff are practicing this prejudice behavior. It felt as if they were discriminating against my skin color. Hence I would give negative stars to this place if I can give them and I would advise caution if you were to decide to go there.
Nice patio, large place with plenty of seating, but everything feels very generic. There is no real vibe here. Not sure what happened, but over the years Gentle Bens had lost its identity. It isnt terrible but there are so many other breweries and bars that have a much better vibe that I would avoid this one.
We just went to this place, my husband had the specialty burger, the patty wasnt a quality meat, the fries out of the bag, I did ask for mahi mahi tacos, I couldnt see the fish, Brandon the waiter was the best aspect of this rather below average eatery. I understand that the principal business is beer, however if you are going to be proud of your menu you should sell better quality of food.Been there done that not coming back!
Good Atmosphere.. they have an indoor and outdoor area. There is also a second story for events. What stood out was the staff. Every single person there, from the security to the bartenders, even staff that was off duty and grabbing a bite/ drink was friendly.
Came on a Sunday night. It was a very empty restaurant and it was only two of us. Waited for about 5 minutes for someone to seat us and when they did, no one came back to the table for about 20 minutes. And by 20 minutes, I really do mean 20 minutes. As a server myself, I know customers can exaggerate a bit but seriously that was ridiculous. Finally the guy comes back to take our order. Ordered at 7:25pm and didnt receive the food until 8:08 pm. Once we got the food, my burger had completely fallen apart. The server only came back to the table once, which was because I asked him for the check. Very awful customer service. I work as a server at IHOP and let me tell you, we know a lot more about what good customer service is, ironically. And we still can manage to get to all of our tables and make sure the customer has a good experience. Thought Gentle Bens would be better than IHOP.
They had a good local beer selection, the staff was very attentive and friendly and the food came out quickly. The Carne Asada Steak was very flavorful and very tender, cooked exactly as I ordered it! The rice and beans were overcooked and crispy but they had such a good flavor that I ate them anyway! If it were not for the overcooked rice and beans theyd get the fifth star.
Gentle Bens is the best place on University to sit and enjoy the night life, with their huge, two-story patio! The food is always great, you wont be disappointed in the Caesar Salad or the Spinach and Artichoke dip, and the drinks are just as good. On my last trip there, our server, Shawn, was attentive and always had a smile for us!
Good Irish coffee. good tortilla soup. Nice on the first day of cool weather. Nice service. GB has been a fixture for three 40 years that I was an undergrad and its still a place for me to go. Hooray for tradition.
The plus side was that the patio had a great view of the lively college community walking past. And a generous, fresh, and attractive beets and feta and candied walnut salad. But neither of us could eat the tough and dry fish in the tasteless mahi mahi taco. And there was a really long, long wait for the food.
It’s a great college sports restaurant right next to campus. The environment is typically filled with sports fans in game nights, and it’s very social and fun to be around. The food itself is simply bar food, nothing too special. It’s a good place to go with friends and cheer in your team
Went to see Bear Grillz and the venue did an amazing job accommodating the show! Drinks came quick and hassle free.
Im speaking only on behalf of the nightclub upstairs, experience has always been great and they pull some big name DJs for the tiny size of the venue. Drinks are always good and staff is respectful/mindful.
Hard-working servers although there was a bit of a wait I think cuz they were short staffed. But good friendly service. Lots of outdoor seating adjacent to the university so caters to the young party crowd.
Had lunch with some co-workers yesterday. The chicken quesadilla was ridiculously delicious, the service was great, and gelato was a nice add-on for dessert. Weve spent happy hours there as well, and sampled many of the specialty cocktails. Its nice that theyre using fresh ingredients for those! Super cool and refreshing.
Best reuben sandwich in Tucson, hands down. The rest of the menu is pretty tasty, too. The restaurant can be a little on the noisy and under-lit side, but is overall comfortable and welcoming. This is one of my favorite places to take visiting friends and family from out of town.
Didnt eat or drink here but looks like a cool place to hangout, especially during game nights.
Stood around in a nearly empty restaurant waiting for several minutes to be seated. I had to walk around to find someone. Burger was EXCEPTIONALLY overcooked and had an odd taste. My son said his grilled cheese tasted funny. I tasted it and found it had an odd kind of Windex smell and flavor. Waiter was quiet and awkward, acted like he didnt want to be working. Disappointing experience.
Awesome food, responsive helpful staff, and the patio was killin me softly with its marble counters and moody lighting! Loved the buffalo sauce. Wasnt fond of the avocado tacos, wayyy too little flavor and too much fried grease, Id recommend getting that without the fried batter, just fresh avo. But everything else was bomb and we cant wait to go back! Parking is a little tricky but so worth it!
Great brewpub right by the University of Arizona campus!
Ordered the ceviche and nachos with chicken and it was all delicious. The staff was very helpful especially after my husband dropped our ceviche that we were taking home. Two young men helped pick up the food and actually filled up another container with fresh cerviche at no cost. My husband and I will definitely be going back.
Waitress wasnt attentive. Didnt even show us the bill and asked us to pay it. When I asked her for printed receipt to see the bill and make sure I was charged property, she gave attitude. The Western Burger was not good. Although, my chicken tacos were great.
Nice location. It was hot though, misters blowing too high above my head!! Food was typical bar food. Buffalo chicken tenders were over cooked and too much breading. But its close to campus so the college crowd probably doesnt know the difference! Prob wont be back.
Amazing as always. I come here often and really enjoy the food and the beer selection. Service has always been great, and the amount of seating and tables is impressive. If youre in Main Gate Square, I would highly recommend a visit to Gentle Bens.
Decent food and friendly staff, though service was a little slow. Check out was confusing as they automatically added a 20% tip but it wasnt obvious. Would help to have a clearer check out screen.
If you are looking for a decent hamburger Gentle Bens is a decent option. Prices are competitive with other brewery style hamburger places in Tucson. The portion sizes are filling without being heaping. While not the best hamburger Ive ever had, a hamburger here is probably in the top 25% of hamburgers.
Cant say anything about the brews as I didnt have any, but the chicken quesadilla was delicious. It had a nice subtle flavor, not overpowering, just tasty. U of A is not in session, so it was pretty dead. But the people who were there were very pleasant and easy going.
I dunno, man. My mom went to school at the U of A and she had some great stories about this bar. We visited, and it’s become SO bougie that it’s hard to imagine it’s the same place. The food was expensive, and we weren’t that impressed with it.
This was my favorite spot during undergrad. As of right now, I would suggest not buying food from Bens until COVID is over. I’m not sure if the stress of the virus is leading for the employees to not pay attention or what the issue is. Last week, I ordered carne tacos and first, I went to pick up my meal and as I opened the box at home, it was not tacos. After, i decided to call and explain the mix up and when the server offered to have the right order sent to me, I agreed. However, the tacos were extremely gross. For some reason there was way too much sauce on them. The rice and beans were extremely salty. Nothing about my experience was right besides the offer to send the right order after the first mistake.
Dont be duped! We came for dinner the other night after having been to an awful brewery earlier in the afternoon... theyre related! This place exclusively serves Barrio Brewing brews and they are awful! We ordered the Barrio Rojo because it was the only one we tried at the brewery worth stomaching and it was awful here; tasted like the beer lines needed a good cleaning *cough cough*.The only reason for the two stars is because the avocado tacos were pretty decent, although they took 30+ minutes, and the service was fast/friendly.Ambience is awful - loud, loud, and more loud. Theyre called sound-absorbing panels.Do not recommend.
Great beers, awesome patio views the busy little district full of people enjoying down time at restaurants and shops. Spinach artichoke dip comes in a bread bowl that if I wasnt sharing, would eat the whole thing. Washed it down with the tasty Copperhead Ale. Bring friends, there is plenty of room and the service is great!
Total Me vs Them mentality from the early 20s staff feeling a need to exert power. Ordered 5 meals while 4 of us were sitting inside, and our 5th person was trying to come in and the unapologetic frat star staff crew wouldnt let her come in without paying $20 even though we were eating and not going upstairs to thrash it down. There were so many empty tables in the dining area. Avoid especially during busy times! The only silver lining was our waitress was nice enough to spend about 10 minutes arguing with the staff to finally get our 5th person in.
Havent eaten downstairs only sttended events upstairs but i love it here! Vibes are always great. Drinks are alittle pricey heads up.
Gentle Bens has always been a favorite spot of mine in the U of A area. They have awesome burgers and fantastic chicken tenders. I love that Bens turns into a club on weekends nights. So much fun!
Delicious! Stopped by here between classes when they opened. Delicious Hefeweizen and French Dip. Food was hot and the fries had some sort of spice that made them tasty. Staff was friendly as well, will probably stop by in the future.
I have known Richard and his staff for quite sometime. They are very prompt and professional and the food is great. My dad and Uncle love coming here when they come to town! Bens is the place to be for great food and beers! Highly recommended!
The people that work there are very rude, I waited 50 minutes for a quesadilla and it was takeout and nobody was even there
If you like large portions at a fair price?... This is your place. Craft beers. Juicy burgers, friendly staff. Right on university. Great dining experience!
Gentle Bens has been a mainstay in my life for the last twelve years, so I thought it only right that I sing its praises.First and foremost, the beer selection and quality is top notch. Bens is the only brewing company on University Blvd. that offers a great selection of homemade beers to enjoy while watching televised sports events, pre- or post-gaming for U of A athletics (Bear Down!) and campus events, or just good old happy hour with great friends. If you are an IPA fan, youd be hard pressed to find a better one anywhere. The food menu provides a nice selection of tasty appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and entrees that are highlighted with a southwest flair. I particularly enjoy a number of their apps; the spinach artichoke dip is literally the best Ive ever had (amazing!), their southwest egg rolls are unique and delicious and their nachos are top notch. Finally, their staff has always been upbeat, courteous and generally engaging. If you are looking for great beer, food and service, youd be hard pressed to find a better spot directly near the U of A.
Drinks are expensive but it is a convenient location. Usually get a salad but they’re almost always overdressed and soggy. Trivia is a fun perk on Wednesday nights and the desserts are usually pretty good for the price.
Food was unremarkable, but the server was outstanding. Cody anticipated our needs, in a very professional and appropriate manner. I will return just because of him!We will be there next week for the lecture series, our 8th year.
