Had a fantastic time here for a recent community event. I had the time of my life! This venue has a lot of smart enhancements. Spacious bathrooms, large dance floor, plenty of bars and sexy bartenders, and a fantastic patio area! I even saw pool tables!Music was loud, the crowd was energized, and I felt safe enough to dance the night away among the other members of my community. Im grateful for this space. Huge improvements since I was in college.Next time someone asks you to go to The Wave, say yes. You wont regret it.(Not a lot of pics from me on this because I was too busy having fun.)
Nice size place but definitely needs some improvements far as crowd goes. It was pretty dead for a Friday night. But good service, good vibes. Music was hip hop for sure. Definitely would go back overall. Chicken tenders are my go to for food
New to the area. Recommended to visit y a roommate. Amazing staff. Security presence is extremely comforting and respectful. Dj Bird was crushing it. Dance floor is top tier. Cant wait to visit the area and stop by again.
Its a nice cute gay bar. Door fee is ridiculous. Some bartenders make good drinks, while other not so much. Djs play a good variety but not enough latino house.
Let’s talk about the “blonde” security aka “mommy”. I had ZERO issues with her, even when she tossed my friend out the bar. Zero complaints for someone doing their job and ensuring the safety of everyone else.Secondly, overall the nightclub is MID.The alcohol selection is limited, but the bartenders have a heavy hand in their pours. The smoke pit could use some heaters or something for the smokers. I’m a non smoker, just to be clear.Age group definitely on the younger side minus the staff and maybe some regulars. No review on food, so can’t give my two cents.I would recommend just to see if it’s your type of atmosphere, but for me, I’m a one and done kind of guy. Additionally I prefer a bar scene.
Your bouncers are way to over bearing blond buch girl think shes a cop and way to into saying this is simple instructions and your a idiot I wouldnt recommend it she was talking to me about leaning on the building Im old but owner fully supports her so thats OK no sadly its not some the security staff carry weapons and she happens to be one so I dont recomend his establishment he also talked about earlier conversations I had with him about my divorce with his staff after. Highly childish and highly unprofessional in the bar industry.
I’ve been coming to this club for years and will continue to do so!! They foster an inclusive space that’s safe and welcoming to lgbtq+ community and I’m proud of the owners/staff/security for this!! The music is always fire, the drag queens are stellar, and the bartenders are incredible!! Thanks for being there and having a good vibe!!
Should have made this review sooner. Management read your review. Most are about the blonde security. I have to agree she is a NIGHTMARE!!! 2 drinks and youre escorted out the door. She excused my friend of saying racist slurs and I was there the whole time and he never said anything. 2 people from our group had 2 drinks the others had a shot and 1 drink and the blonde security said we were drunk and out of control and kicked us out. Shes on an ego trip.
Absolutely love this place!!! Especially the blonde security guard! they all hate but that’s because they have only been here once. she cares about everyone who walks in and never makes you feel any type of way except love. 100% would come here and trait that they will make sure you are protected and taken care of!
Do not come here if you like drinking and having a good time. They are very strict about how Inebriated you appear although it’s a bar and a nightclub…. Even if you aren’t unruly and causing a scene, they will still kick you out if you stumble/ trip on accident. Feels like club in prison by the amount of armed security following you around everywhere. Not to mention, they will garass you for sitting in the parking lot too long . I’ll just say straight up they aren’t welcoming to Black people or people of color. This is clear with the treatment, and with the music they play which sucks. MJ Tavern is up the street and is much a better atmosphere with NO cover charge.
Good gay club with good music and definitely good bartender making drinks. My only issue is I don’t get why there’s a cover on friday when is almost never crowded .pbr and banque have no cover and they get so crowded Fridays. Is also why a lot of the gays stay at mjs no cover
Bar tenders were amazing, drinks and food were amazing. Only reason I’m giving them 3 stars is because of the blond security guard. I was just about to leave so I decided to run to the bathroom I was not even in there for 2 minutes before she came in and accused me of smoking weed in the bathroom. She was extremely rude about it and I tried to explain it wasn’t me and that I had just gotten there. honestly I was terrified as it wasn’t me, it stank horribly when I went in there. Maybe they should keep a closer eye on the bathroom if they’re gonna be blaming people and just straight up being rude and yelling at people. I’m honestly so scared to go back now.
The blonde security guard targets random individuals. If you see her approaching you, make sure you have people around you to have your back. This isn’t the first review that references the blonde security guard. I have no problem with the establishment other than having to deal with her every time I’m there.
When you’re greeted outside with metal detecting security guards, ushered into a door with a guy taking cover with zero personality and then forced to deal with rude bartenders (especially the one that tells you repeatedly that his father started the club), you get a strong feeling you’ll never go back. And my friends and I haven’t.
The club itself was nice, but the issue I had was before I entered the building. A tall black man who was apart of security told me that I couldn’t wear my outfit and had to change. It was a summer night and my stomach was showing. He told me I had to cover up my stomach and then literally watched me fix my clothes so my stomach wasn’t showing. Once inside my friends and I told management and he said that I look beautiful, that I was fine, and the security guard was wrong. We payed and went to partying. Next thing we know the security guard approaches me again and tells me to cover up. We all tell him what the manager told us and he was very upset and told us that he was wrong. We ignored him and kept partying. The security guard kept watching me all night until we left.
I used to love this club when the previous older owners where there maybe they have moved on.There used to be a stage and the music was something everyone could enjoy Friday was techno and Saturday was hip hop. They don’t play good music and the scene has changed very few African Americans attend. We used to vouge and have a blast I miss the old waveNorfolk now is boring the culture has left sad. All in all not a bad club just not what it used to be
Had a terrible interaction with a blond security guard.. long story short, I was with friends. She and another security guard approach me and say I have to walk outside with them.. I comply and pull out my phone so I can start recording..they go on to say I was fighting or had a altercation with someone.. I tell her I’ve been with my friends and I haven’t had any bad interaction with anyone.. more security come I get annoyed. I had a few drinks so this situation was unsettling and not easy to handle ... I ask with who and when did this happen no one could tell me.. then the rest of security states “ we didn’t see anything” ( apprently they were there for back up, which is wild cause I walked out calmly glad I was recording).. I ask her, she then says “well I didn’t see anything”.. i ask well why am I here if no one saw anything?miss ma’am goes on to say a customer in the club reported it.. instantly I say were they drunk? She looks at me… I’m confused on why they are listening to a drunk patron.. secondly I ask did you check the cameras to see I’ve been with my friends the entire night? No answer.. then blondie tries to gaslight me as though I am wrong for pointing out how crazy this situation is… not to mention her story changed one of my friends was told it happened on the smoke patio, I never went outside.. TBH if she can’t tell the difference between patrons of the same demographic or doesn’t have enough common sense to look at the cameras before taking the word of a drunk person she doesn’t need to work there.. the situation was belittling and scary because many people have died or been injured off of false accusations… DO BETTER and at least check your cameras before causing a scene and accusing someone of serious offenses
Went with friends this past Friday and it was fun but a bit dead. They did charge us an $8 cover before 9pm which goes against their signs about cover charges?
My first time at a club ever was last saturday i had so much fun the bar tender by the main dance floor was super sweet super glad i made the wave was the club i chose to go to going back again saturday love it and even bringing some friends along :)
This review is solely based off of The Waves customer service. I lost my glasses there 3 months ago and initially they didn’t find them. Months later my glasses come up from nowhere and their staff was super thoughtful and messaged me about them after all that time had passed. I got them back and they were nicely bubble wrapped and everything, I truly appreciate their kindness, thank you!!
Apparently even tho this is a club, you shouldnt have more than one drink. My friend and I had 2 shots and spent about 30 mins sitting on the patio vibing, minding our own business. Got up to find the bathroom (it was our first time there) went to the bar for another shot after, and was greeted by the blonde security guard telling us we had to close out our tab because we were stumbling around everywhere and it was a safety issue. We werent causing issues at all, didnt fall, didnt drop drinks, werent loud, bumping into people and she told us to close our tab and leave. AND THEN SHE ESCORTED US OUT! It was like 38 dollars for us to even get in and we spent an hour there just to be embarrassingly escorted out for what?! Never again will I go back here.
While Im being accused of making a racial comment, they dont seem to be welcoming to everyone. They wont say it but they dont want us there and I hate to take it there but Ive been blocked on there social media after years of spending there and years of not being a problem when Ive so many be a problem. Because of one exchange, and me saying the Asian guy, Ive been banned and almost threatened if I come back. Dont call because they wont speak to you on the phone. And nothing I said was rude besides you considering me addressing the door attendant by his race. I wanted you to know who I was referring to, thats not derogatory. If you review the Facebook chat of the exchange, you will read an upset customer and not rude or aggressive as Im being characterized. There was occasion in 2021 and one in 2023 that I was wrong about being overcharged. This instance, I was not. Whoever handles your social media made it personal and was rude to me. Especially since Im not even being allowed to physically speak to a manager or owner.
It was cool the first few minutes. Then we got to the bartenders. Not all of them were bad it was just these two. My friend ordered a drink and didnt sip it yet and they ask for a tip. Nothing wrong with that but... Sis wait until they taste it. He was being rude. They didnt like the drink to much so they requested for more pineapple juice. He was being petty and wouldnt help them, so I went to the other guy for it and I tipped him, but all he did was put water instead of pineapple juice. Paid 25 dollars for a water down drink.
A huge shout out to my Wave family. Thank you for another great pride. Thank you for so much for all you have done and continue to do to show support and love for the community. Grateful to have a place to go where we are free to be ourselves with great food entertainment and the security and safety to enjoy it! I know there’s a lot of hard work that goes into making sure everything is perfect!
Good music, good food, and great people. Drinks are fairly priced. Also I liked the bars security team, they do not take the task of safety for granted. I like going home in good health. Sounds like Trey did something and couldnt get away with it. The Wave and its team are stellar in my book.
Wonderful atmosphere! Staff was very helpful and the DJ had me dancing all night! Such a great and necessary night out! Thanks for an amazing time!
Staff needs to make rules more clear. Blonde security lady needs to be trained better in dealing with people. Very rude don’t come unless you have nowhere else to go.
Great music, great vibe, security is tight but in a good way. Have never felt safer at a night club. Drinks are always strong and you get to meet great new people.
Although I love this club very much, I can tell that they are hiring novice DJs. The music is hit and miss and I honestly wish they invested in better DJs that can read the crowd and play their list accordingly. As far as I know, they are just playing on a repeated Playlist that isnt that great to begin with. Hopefully they have better DJs in the future. Other than that, food and drinks are awesome.
Everything was going great we were a party of four celebrating a birthday. We bought multiple drinks and tipped each time. We were getting our final drink when the bartender Tommy (if that’s even his real name) begin to hassle us for ANOTHER TIP‼️ I proceeded to tip him and he said to me if you can’t afford to tip do not come to the bar. He then grabbed the microphone and tried to humiliate me. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life. I’ve been trying to contact the establishment since Saturday morning to voice my concerns and no communication or action has been taken. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT THEY DONT VALUE THE CONSUMER ONLY THEIR TIPS‼️
Great place to come and party! The atmosphere is lively and fun! The staff is very friendly and welcoming! Cannot recommend The Wave enough for people to come on the weekend and have a fun time!
Place charged me almost $17 for a “happy hour” drink. Bill came out to $70 with 6 drinks. All being under “happy hour” prices. Desperate for money it seems. Will never come here again. Place thinks they are a hot club in New York City.
Had an awesome time last night at the drag show got to see my favorite drag queen Detox perform, and I was lucky enough to have detox plant a big ole kiss on me !!!!I’m a straight woman but I was still in heaven!!!!! Detox I love u!!!!!!
We waited through the whole line which was like 20min just to be told we couldn’t go in because we had our vape pen with us. I’ve brought with me every time I’ve gone and they even have a smoking area so what’s the point? The people in front of us also had a vape and they went in? They told me to throw away my pen or leave. I asked if I could put it in the car and they said no. So annoying.
Straight family owners, the male bartenders of the family ownership group aggressively accost queer people that aren’t interested in their cis white dude advances.I’m sadly astounded they’re still ripping off the LGBTQ community in Hampton Roads.
Staff was extremely rude to my wife and her friend last night. They are 18 and up on Fridays as of 2 months ago according to the owner. So my wife and her friend attempt to get clarification as to if its still 18+ and whoever the manager was started yelling at her for wanting questions answered as to why they were denied if its 18+
Had a blast here, security is tight but I appreciated feeling safe and the music and drinks were on point! Tommy is running the place and hes a dreamboat! Such a fun night out!!! 🥰
Everyone saying they racist and rude so i won’t visit i almost started to but 100 comments saying NO
Security here is soo Extra. You would think they are working at the Pentagon...They talk to partons so rude. They curse at you, yell, lie...Avoid this place if u want a good time at a venue who values your money...Trash.
Security extorting people for $50 to skip the line to still pay $16 to get in. Random guy trying to pawn beers to people on line for $5 and security didnt stop him. Dont trust this location. Go to a regular bar.
Dont expect them to play music you like because they dont take requests. Theres a guy that use to bartend in the back who would talk about you on the mic if he didnt like what you tipped.
Nice staff, it really smells like poop here really really bad. Please do something about it.
Good vibes, inclusive and fun. Been unwinding here for years and years.
Love the music, eye candy, and the flamboyant atmosphere. The security is for your protection, we dont want to be another target as the one from Orlando.
It’s a vibe but the music has to get better. It’s the same songs each week. Would love it if they played more r&b and reggae.
Staff was polite. Clientele not so much.
This place is outrageous and absolutely not worth it with a $15 cover and $14 drinks…
Always a great time coming here to unwind after the work week, I have made some really awesome long term friends here.
Amazing service, great place for a birthday party, lgbt events, huge dance floor great bat service, best drag in town!!
Security is definitely on people kept harassing my friends and I to keep my hands out of my pocket.
Was a good night out with the girls. They music could be better but we mad the best of it
Cover charge is excessive
Everyone was super friendly. There was a lot of security, which was a little weird.
Sounds like a place I wouldnt want to go to. Terrible reviews.
Treated my friends unfairly. Rude Staff
Thee music sucks to high heaven lol
New DJ!!!
