Excellent safe place for folks in need of a queer positive bar with a friendly party atmosphere. My only complaint is they need more bathrooms but thats not their fault. The staff is super good about making sure everyone has fun and gets home safe
I went on a weekend during an event, it was pretty packed. The service was faster in the front than the other bar (they have two). They do have food. More rave vibes I would say. The drag show was alright but it all depends on when you go and who you with. I recommend going with a group of friends because people are pretty clicky.
A San Francisco icon of a bar. Great vibe, gay friendly (encouraged?), classic bar. They also host some great music and their backyard patio blowouts are a blast. Go.
This place has gone extremely downhill. Rude to borderline aggressive bartenders that ignore customers, bathroom line that never moves with people cutting left and right, overall just a meh experience. There are far better bars in San Francisco: skip this one.
El Rio is a queer classic known for its patio and chill vibes. Staff is generally friendly and the weekend parties are some of the best gay events the city has to offer. Come early, but dont plan on staying until the wee hours, more than a few times in the past few months theyve called last call hours before their posted closing time. Chalk it up to pandemic related not quite back to normal weirdness, but it sure would be nice to rely on this queer staple to honor their posted hours because when its open its truly one of the best spots in the city.
As good as youve heard and more. Cool bartenders, occasional free food. Always a fun scene.
The best kind of dive bar. Come as you are - great bartenders who know how to manage a busy bar top, and the best patrons in the Mission. We stumbled upon it on our trip to San Francisco, and it was the best accidental discovery of my week. Dont listen to the bad reviews, I cant say anything bad about the place and Id like to think I have an eye for good bars with good people. Bring in outside food, as they dont have a kitchen (but be kind and clean up after yourself), and oh, its one of the stalwart gay bars in town. Its the place where anyone can come in and be themself, regardless of how you roll. Ill be back.
Told me I looked 16 then refused to check my ID & refused me entry at the door (I’m 21 and a trans man) Worst experience I’ve ever had at a bar in SF. Don’t go here
Ive been a fan for a long time! Good music! Good drinks! Good vibes!
I cant believe how little its changed in the nearly 30 years Ive been going there. Service is slow. Drinks are strong. Shows start late. The clientele are beautiful! Bathrooms are broken. Backyard is one of the best in SF! Go while youre young and vivacious!!
Good place for karaoke and drinks with friends. Their music venue is terribly small and not much in-house support for performing musicians. However the entire package works.
Been to lots of events here, they never have enough bar tenders working. They do put on great events though. Worth signing up for their calendar.
Like the dude, El Rio abides even as fellow dive bars bite the dust. Maybe its the protective shrine in the back. The bar shuffleboard is great.
I went here on a Monday after work to meet friends. It wasnt very busy, which was nice. The drinks were a good price and the card minimum was $20. I liked this spot to meet up with friends. They have games available to play. Some of the advertised entertainment sounded fun, so I would like to come back on a busier night.
I enjoy coming to this bar on the weekends. The location is very spacious indoors, as there is the bar area, a huge outdoor space, and then a dance floor where the DJ is. The prices are more than fair for SF. The music is usually pretty good, too. There can be a $5-10 dollar cover, depending on the night, but there can also be no cover. If that is something that deters you, watch out. I would recommend coming here!
Best queer hangout and dance spot in the city. Chill dive bar venue with outdoor patio, variety of indoor/outdoor events from comedy, live shows, DJs, drag performances, community fundraisers, etc. Tons of wonderful memories with friends throughout the years.- Bartenders are quick and do great service, tip them!- 4 single bathrooms (2 in back, 2 in front with 1 a urinal) but expect long wait times and good conversations when theres a big packed party like Mango- outdoor patio with ramp and stairs to ground level. On normal day, theres lots of seating with tables and chairs. If theres a day event, theres less tables/chairs available. Heat lamps around.- Inside has a shuffle board/pool table
Hip popular bar with good staff, great patio area and local music. Goes out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, even if a bit in your face about it. Real crowded on weekend nights with cover charge, which makes it feel like it cant decide whether it wants to be a club.
Went here for an event and thought it was a great place. Th bartenders were great! Drinks tasted good and venue was perfect for our event. I will definitely be going back.
An old favorite of mine that now my daughter hangs out at. It was great, and i dont mind spending $25 for live entertainment but steep for a dj.
Particularly a great spot to visit on a nice day to take full advantage of the backyard patio. They have a great happy hour where beers are cheap and they offer free oysters (donation is recommended). They have a shuffle board (my personal favorite) and play great music. It can have a hipster vibe depending on the crowd, but its not too off putting yet. Dog friendly
The bartender ignored one end of the bar. Seriously bad service. Was at the bar for over 30 mins then left it was funny after a while since it was so ridiculous. The couple to the right of me stayed they are going to text me when they get served it is now 50 mins no text. It wasnt as if it was not clear as to who arrived at the bar 1st or that the ones who just walked in and got served were regulars. Just pure incompetence and laziness by bartender. Went across street got a beer in 30 seconds on this wonderful Friday evening.
Cute bar with fun decor and a guy on the keyboard when we arrived. The bartenders make great moderately priced drinks and poor a extremely heavy shot of tequila. I enjoyed hanging out on the back patio on a cool summer night. Cash bar and a steep ATM fee is my only complaint.
Love this bar! Definitely among a vaunted few favorites in the city for me. Shuffleboard, great pool table, live music venue, epic patio, and generally fun crowd...always worth the trip! The only thing wanting is a really great beer selection, but they still have plenty of stuff to get you drunk, and you can always go out back to enjoy other vices!
Quirky place with interesting types of people. Happy hours are decent with the $3 draft beers and free oysters. (That means one per person pretty much, but theyre fresh.) The outdoor patio is nice; people will be smoking up there. I feel like it has an old SF feel to it. You wont find the tech folks out here but an older crowd and more eclectic types.
A wonderful bar that has lots of outdoors space as well as indoor games such as pool and shuffleboard. Many times throughout the week there will be live music in a side room that they have setup as a concert venue. During busy days and special events there may be a small cover. Throughout the weekend and extra busy times they will open up a smaller bar outside and have food truck style food served outside. They are known for special $1 oysters on Fridays for a very limited time and also have $3 Tecates at all times.
What at first appears to be a small dive bar opens up into a huge establishment with a fantastic patio (equipped with heat lamps) and concert venue. There are no less than four places to order beers on a busy night and the crowd is always relaxed and friendly (unless theres a punk show). This place is a favorite and somewhere I dont regret having spent as much time and money as I have.
Great atmosphere! Always felt welcomed and the back patio is huge! So theres plenty of space to go around. One dollar tecate night was one of the best times Ive ever had at a bar.
First of all, the crowd is a mix of Mission residents and visitors from other parts of the city but it retains a Mission vibe. On a cold night you can be warm outside on the back patio, compliments of some awesome heating units placed conveniently for your use. Theres food usually served outside and never disappoints. All sorts of fun bands come and play here and its just in general a great place. Staff has always been kind to me and anyone I came with. To top it off, there are indoor games available to play such as a pool table and this other game which I dont know by name. 10/10.
Veronica is great. Super friendly staff. It wasnt very busy on a Saturday but Im cool with that. DJ Baysik is always amazing and definitely brings a good crowd when he is there. Good people!
One of the best dives in SF. They also have entertainment in a small room on the side. There is a really nice patio in back that has food sometimes I think you can reserve space for parties back there but it is never closed to the public as far as I can see so very communal and a good taste of the Mission in SF.
Amazing bar, its cheap, has a patio to relax on, shuffleboard, and a room for live bands. The staff was great, gave my friend a free shot for his birthday. We had a blast playing shuffle board and chilling outside in the patio underneath the heat lamps.
Day Time Realness at El Rio is one of my favorite monthly parties. Sunday afternoons here are always a blast!! Given the opportunity definitely check it out!
The bathroom is a disaster. Real health Hazard. Bartenders are average. Theyll treat you right if theyre in a good mood or if you overtip them.Woman at the door was rude and bossy. There are way better lgbt places to spend your money, for real.
Large Patio, Good Drinks, Live Music. This is a great place to spend an evening drinking with friends and they sometimes have a small food offering available as well. I like to go here on Summer evenings and enjoy catching up with friends here. If you arent going for music there is usually no cover charge. I think the bar is cash only.
FREE karaoke, fun crowd, good vibes, insanely large back area where there was also a doom metal band playing??
Awesome spot! Its been mostly the same for more than 20 years. Great vibe and nice beer garden in the back. Welcoming to all. Sometimes a wait for drinks when they are really busy.
I think I found one of my new favorite hangouts. Sure, this is probably more of a girl-leaning girls bar for girls, but truth be told, I like girls. As people. This bar really has it all. Beer, liquor, both pretty cheap. Outdoor heated patio. Laid back atmosphere. Food. Shuffleboard. Burlesque performances. Live bands. Dance party. Pool. Disgusting bathrooms. I could probably live here.
Cash only. Great fun with shuffleboard. Pours could be better. If youre a boy, wait for a boy bartender and youll get served a nice strong drink. They have an epic patio with tons of space heaters. Friendly crowd.
This was awful. A woman at the door named Kristin, was so unhappy to even be doing her job, she looked pissed off from the moment we walked up. We asked her if she took cards for the cover, she rolled her eyes at us an said it was a cash only bar, which is fine, but why be hateful?!. Then she pushed me out of the way with the swinging door PUSHED ME and I said why are you being so rude to us? And she said we werent getting in her bar tonight. When I asked her why, she said she didnt like my tone. I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the door manager and that there was no one I could talk to and told me to leave. We were 100% sober and it was just the start of our night. Ive never had someone be so unkind and unprofessional. Defiantly not the feeling you want when youre visiting a city or in the LGBT community. I would never recommend this place! Get friendlier staff Rio, or maybe just someone who doesnt hate their job! Kristin is RUDE.
The most Oakland bar in SF! Cool, diverse crowd, very queer-friendly, with cheap drinks and occasional live music in the delightful little courtyard. If they still do $1 Mondays then you have to check it out!
I love that they never got rid of the “Your dive” sign.Used to come here 30 yrs ago with my roommate Katie. Free oysters on Friday evenings. Pure joy.
Your typical bar with backward and music. Bathrooms have a weird setup tho.
I had a bad experience with El Rio and their staff. I will never go back . The place is not safe and I don’ t feel safe in there. They apply double standard to customers.I was assaulted in the bathroom by some black women and they totally ignored me, refused to provide help and instead went to support the criminals!! They will say that the camera is broken , that they don’ t support the police and that “ in USA we don’ t call the police on black people” . Really? They assault customers but they protect them !! I just read that someone was robbed on the bathroom and they were making fun of them !!! Be careful in that bar, is full of Di@k head who are only after money!!
This bar is a great asset to the gay community and has a wonderful vibe and patio. That being said, on busy nights the bathroom situation is so bad that were any public health department to see it would be shut down. A recent night I was there at least 100 people were in attendance (likely double or triple that) and the 1 mens and 1 womens rooms (both used by both) had lines at least 20 people long the entire evening. The mens room had no sit-down toilet, only urinal (2) on the floor, and an inch of standing urine with no toilet paper. The womens was no better. It was anticipated to be a very busy night, and apparently no one extra had been hired or no one there had been told to check the restrooms for servicing. Bars are meant for drinking, and drinking leads to pissing, and so though Id like to give this great place and community hub more stars I think the bathroom situation probably breaks many codes for a reason and its very irresponsible of owners to let get that way.
Cheap drinks, chill atmosphere, and lots and lots of hipsters. Ive been to this bar twice and both times I had a pretty good time. Like I said the drinks are cheap...really cheap ($3 rail drinks and beer) and they dont stiff you on the booze! Although the inside of the bar is pretty small, with an area in the back with one pool table and shuffle board, the outside is BALLER. I was not expecting that patio when I walked into Rio, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of hipsters, which I like in comparison to the gropey creeps on Polk. Seemed to be pretty 420 friendly cause I saw a lot of people smoking but there was a bouncer sniffing around (not sure if that was to join in orrrrrr not). Anyway, definitely a solid bar for a saturday night in the Mission.
Love the dive vibe with quality drinks, the variety of people who go, and the bartenders are efficient and friendly. Lots of bathrooms. Awesome outdoor space. One of my favorites.
El Rio reminds me of summer. Thats because the best thing about this dive bar is the huge outdoor space that is reminiscent of a friends backyard. There are picnic tables, a patio setup, and string lights. Whats more, imagine that this friend is generous and offers you free raw oysters and grilled sandwiches on Fridays! He even gives free salsa lessons on Sunday afternoons! Obviously we are best friends.Although the mixed drinks here are cheap (less than $5 per drink), they taste pretty bad, particularly the bloody marys. It might be smart to stick to beer. Youre in the Mission - embrace your inner hipster and, more importantly, that PBR!
I love the back patio! This is the perfect place to come on a sunny day and just chill with friends and a beer. The bartenders are attentive and they have great events and happy hours every night of the week!
Its got a back area which is fun to hang in, a pool table and shuffle board. Also has a small backroom stage if you want to hear some live music on occasion. Sometimes the cover fees are bs tho, like on pride
Cheap drinks in El Rio can be found as well as a nice outdoor patio thats open and lively. The space is a bit dingy and grungy, but the drinks and the company make up for that. Stick to the beers, thats the best advice I can give.
Bartender was very rude. We had a small missunderstanding that blew up into a big drama over nothing.Seemed like a nice place to hang out, but left with a bitter taste that really would have been solved easily by just talking
This is THE most fabulous bar in San Francisco. The vibes are chill and the drinks are affordable. They occasionally host awesome dance parties that are welcoming to everyone. 🏳️🌈
El Rio is a great bar with a friendly staff. They have a variety of events here weekly. It is also a bay that has a primarily lgbt clientele. They sell indian tacos as well. The drinks are pretty affordable and the atmosphere is very chill and friendly.
Walked my dog here to meet some friends after reading the website which proclaims how much they love dogs. The front door man let me in, but the power tripping woman taking money for the cover charge insisted it was going to be too rowdy to let her in. Basically a garbage place in an out of the way location with crappy staff.
Their patio is awesome to chill almost all year around. Also Monday is 1$ beer and 2$ well drinks. There is always an interesting story waiting to happen here.
One of the few bars that has a backyard area with lots of space and flora. El Rio is also the only bar that has a shuffle board game. Staff is friendly and they have lots of various events.
An employee was harassing me and calling me names because I told her to call someone she wanted the answers to a question too. I talked to the manager where he proceeded to state, “well you don’t live here so okay” which is not only wrong but rude aswell. Probably why they love employees like that.
You should definitely come here during their mango events. Its a daytime party that they have once a month. Chill vibe and plenty of eye candy. They also make fantastic margaritas and will have to come back for their $1 oysters on Friday nights.
I had a great time! My friend Lynnes band Homobiles was playing and rocked!Check them out! They are an amazing local band.
I dont know what to say about this place Ive been going to this place off and on for 35 40 years and its had its up to its downs but My recent visit there was just mediocre mainly because they had a DJ playing inside the bar that seemed to be driving away all the customers the music was so bad if it hadnt been for the act in the back on the patio I dont think they would have been anybody in that bar but times change so what can I say but that noise they were playing is not good for business
Great atmosphere!! Most of the bartenders are friendly and fun!! I went to a fundraiser event here and it was the perfect spot to have it!!
The best crew around. The best patio. The best parties. The best popup snack vendors. The best Bloody Mary bar. The best shows. Gayer the better. Keep it Queer.
As another reviewer said, cheap drinks and chill atmosphere. Sometimes they have food. Good place to go and make friends. They have or used to have free oysters on (fridays?)
If you are a cis male then you shouldn’t even worry about hanging out here.
Great local gay friendly bar. A beer on the patio after a long walk makes perfect for the afternoon. $4 dollars tap beer happy hour.
The backyard is so big and when the DJ crew Sazon Libre has dance parties here it feels like being at your friend house party, so much fun!
Cool vibe.Wine made 2 of our people sick so stick to the other beverages ☆Might go back for patio vibe.Area is sketchy so just stay inside.
Found a new favorite bar. Great in every way. Very clean, very respectful waitress. Very wonderful food and appetizers !! I highly recommend eating here!!
Every time I go to this bar I have a good time. They have a good bar, an outside patio, a second room for music and live performance, and the occasional karaoke. What more could you ask from in a bar?!
Just got mugged at gunpoint in the bathroom. Protip: If youre in the line at the bathroom and some guys in front of you start an argument with you, and then offer to let you go on in ahead of them, dont do it. When you unlock the door they will barge in and you will be completely trapped.
Cool venue, great outdoor hangout area, and live music. Cash only, which can be a bummer sometimes, but makes the stealth bail easier when your friends become insufferable.
Cool spot. Great outdoor seating, great bartenders and socially conscience, totally inclusive a throwback by todays standard of PC neutral SF bars. No frat bros bs tolerated here.
Low Brow for High Stakes, A Night Poachers delight, as this place has a great shuffle board as well as Patio. Think Zeitgeist minus the BROS and Clueless College Ditzez I recommend coming here to see a live show, you wont be disapointed!
Good vibes. DJ was lit.
Really enjoy coming here! Lots of people but very roomy. Good beer selection. Would definitely go back.
One of the few bars in SF that still has a buzzing, down to earth vibe. Fun, clean with empanadas to boot, and a nice alternative to the cascade of corporate feeling private equity bars.
Its a great bar with a dynamic and kind staff. However, I dont get the point about smocking. I mean Weed is allowed but not cigarette... Please, I need an explanation.
Love this institution and its outdoor casual patio. Drinks are just fine for a hipster dive bar.
I love El Rio!!! It’s a very hit spot for many to chill, relax, and have a drink. And of course their events are Ana but as well!!
Saw someone who had too much to drink and the staff genuinely looked out for this person. I only have the highest regards for this place because of that.
Read some truly horrifying reviews online about the safety of this placeYou had a patron robbed at gun point in your bathroom and your response was to kick them out instead of offering help and calling 911?You will NEVER get my business
Probably my favorite local dive. Karaoke Mondays, local bands weekly, cyber punk movies, and dance parties. Get a hamm job special. Best deal in town
It’s a big crowd and big space with terrible absolutely terrible music. Honestly if they just put on top hits from 2000-2010s, it would be much better.
Great prices, good service, good selection of drinks. Great patio sections. Looks like a little dive bar from the front but was a pretty good crowd.
Its fine. Its just a small local bar. Beer is good. Cash only but they have an ATM and there is a BofA down the street.
One of the best spaces in the city. Great patio. Great vibes. Great Drinks. Support El Rio!
If you love inclusive divebar weirdness, this is our place!
Great mission spot with a large backyard area and fun crowd! Typically do not have food, although there are occassional oysters.
The Best place in San Francisco!
Good to see the owners dealing with a robbery-at-gunpoint yesterday with all the seriousness you think that would entail. The robbery has a police report which I suggest you seriously check out.
One of the few bars Ive seen with shuffle board. great atmosphere i love the outdoor patio cheap beer:)
Diverse crowd and diverse music is what makes this place a stand out in the Castro, not to mention the huge chill patio in the back!
Great vibes, friendly people, the bar takes card, cant really ask for more 💖
So much fun staff is great, drinks are great, vibe is lovely.
Amazing bar filled with good energy, friendly staff, and great drinks.
Divey. The crowd varies a lot night to night. Spacious backyard area that can accommodate larger groups of people.
One of the best bars in the Mission. They have an outdoor patio as well as shuffle board!
I love El Rio! $2 Tecates and a big outdoor patio means I always have a good time.
Great bar with a super fun vibe and live music. No cash accepted, though they have an ATM
Probably the best patio among all SF bars. Lot of events, great crowd
Great bar with a nice outside area where there might be a dude giving away food - some sort of fry bread taco - for whatever price you feel like paying.
Fun place with a dance floor on the other side of the bar. Outside bar is a great addition as well!
Great neighborhood bar with large outdoor area and frequent events such as fundraisers, karaoke, pool and darts, etc.
The best day to go is Mondays because its $1 beer and thats a lot of nice people and music.
Great bartenders, doorperson is great, and i always have fun playing shows with my band there!
Fantastic place, awesome staff and great music
Great place if you enjoy being robbed at gunpoint and having the bartender mock you afterwards. Do avoid at all costs.
Nice atmosphere, very nice staff, delicious food and a wide variety of drinks and cocktails.
Went here for an event, R&B and Ribs!🔥🔥
Keep coming back to this place. Nice people and atmosphere. Recommend going on a Friday which is free oysters day.
Always fun, bar tenders friendly, love the street food.
Fun crowd and amazing backyard area. If you get in early enough you can snag a table under the tress.
One of the more diverse hangouts in the city. Generally a good hang when Im there.
Always, always, always good times! Musics on point, and backyard is peaceful AF!
What can you really say about El Rio? It hasn’t changed too much over the years. Not many places left in SF that feel like this.
This is an awesome bar! Great queer dancing, good people and nice layout.
This place is the 100% best with 100% of all the genuine positive vibes only baby + great lil venue for shows. #teamdog !!!
The beers were not that great. I couldn’t drink one of them (which is a first for me). Seems to be a tad overrated 🤷♂️
Fun bar with a beautiful back bar patio. Great diverse people full of live.
Lovely bar with a great outdoor patio and extra room for dancing or live music.
The atmosphere was electric, the people were great, music was wonderful, I wish it never ended!
Great patio. Friendly service. Proud to be open to everyone. This is cool!
The most inclusive bar in the city. Great margaritas, lemon trees in the backyard, awesome staff.
3$ tecates and an amazing patio. Good vibe. It gets crowded in the weekends
Great drinks, great atmosphere, and especially awesome outdoor patio area.
Obviously you go for a fun time. You see a show. You hang on the patio. You drink a bit. Enjoy your night.
Thenkyou
Nice environment for a live music event!!!
Great place to hangout and grab a drink with your squad. Tip to remember: CASH ONLY BAR!!!
Fun bar, hella queer, great minded souls.
The most fun I’ve had in a long time! Come for the day parties!
Real staff real vibes. Dont come if you got stank energy.
Cool vibe bar. Outback area chill. Has live music venue
Welcoming dive bar with great music. Love the back patio on a sunny afternoon.
I loved the place. The bartender with long blond hair has a bad attitude :/
Great atmosphere in this no-frills pub with a cozy and heated patio.
Great place to have a beer. I especially liked the back area.
Was there for a private event.Lovely outdoor patio for dancing
Amazing venue. Great staff.
I’ve been to the bar in 2008, i would recommend it
Drink prices are fair. Fun place. Highly recommend.
Hits all the marks for a dive. Cheap drinks, good music, warm people, and a sweet outside area.
Had a. Good time but the bouncer dumped our water on the way out
I love this bar so much!
The bouncer has a terrible attitude, the cocktails are really bad
It’s really good. The mango parties the best for lesbian!
Loved it! Lots of fun and the people were very nice.
Good bar with a pool table and a nice outdoors area.
Relaxed bar with patio, super queer, good DJs and music!
For dancing and entertainment and salsa Sundays a great place to go
Friendly fast workers, plenty of room outside in the back garden
Nah this place needs to invest in some bathrooms, we got drunk ppl from there peeing on the streets
Love this bar. Great outdoor patio.
Great outdoor bar.
Excellent for some good time and play shuffleboard and have fun!
Excellent vibes. Great drinks and great music!
The best place in the mission . salsa and love and respect el rio love of the people
Good Times
One bathroom and too many people. Dont go
Cant wait to come back with my folks! Such a great staff of people!
Dont go here! A bartender told me the owner is a TRUMP SUPPORTER! STAY AWAY SERIOUSLY
A very nice place to relax and have some fun with friends. ...
A great place to meet friends.
Id rather the world burn than San Francisco and its Mission, and Ill meet you at our sanctuary here soon.
Amazing outdoor space with energy. (And margaritas).
Classic spot, plenty of space and good music.
Careful! Heard you might get robbed at gunpoint in the restroom, might get kicked out for it.
Great local shows and outdoor seating.
Its a nice place but it can get real crowded.
Great dive bar that hosts Mango once a month
Awesome patio and a diverse crowd.
I drank here once or twice. Im thinking I would even drink here thrice!
Isnt this the place where people get robbed in the bathroom at gun point?
Fun queer bar with awesome live music
Went to Science Neat here. drinks and science?! Who could ask for more?
Some day Ill drink enough to do Karaoke, until then bottoms up
El rio the best Mission bar in the city ..
Okay, but the music was too loud for conversation which isnt really my vibe.
Horrible live music, but a great back yard.
I always have the best time at El Rio
Great vibe and good drinks.
Low key! Nice outdoor area.
Sunday day party is a hit. Packed
Mango! Love the music and the atmosphere.
