This place has so much potential, but the ball was dropped, unfortunately. It is a young crowd as we went to the melanin brunch. The promoter was cool. The owner was nowhere to be found, and I was told they were at another club/bar. We were sat timely but, I ended up ordering from the bar because the waitress never came over. 20% gratuity is added to your bill, whether great service is given or not, and no matter how much your bill is. The food was so nasty. Dont order it! I ordered the red velvet waffles and chicken tenders. The waffles were so flimsy, and the chicken was cooked in old burnt grease. Yuck, you will get sick. The music was so loud, when yelling, you still couldnt hear anything. I will not be back. Im sure this establishment wont last because the owners are greedy. Please pay your staff appropriately, and we wont have to automatically pay 20% gratuity annnnnnnd we are able to tip what we want!

They have a Full RnB Live Band playing on Wednesdays !!Tried the Salmon with asparagus and mash potatoes and it was delicious!Im definitely coming back soon

My friends and I met here for a day out. Its a nice environment. The music was great. The lunch/dinner food tastes better than the brunch imo. Overall, its a nice place. The only issue was the A/C was blasting too much.

Like other people have stated, I was charged more than owed. They charge automatic 20% gratuity, but the server gave herself an extra tip on top of the 20%. Be sure to check your bill on the handheld devices they use if paying with credit card. The wings and red velvet Waffles were mediocre at best, and I was surprised that the champagne special was for Andre. Wouldnt have ordered it if I had known.

During my recent visit, I was fortunate enough to be served by Amber, an incredible waitress whose energy and politeness truly stood out. She has an exceptional way of making guests feel completely at home, creating a welcoming atmosphere thats hard to find. Her attentiveness and friendly demeanor significantly enhanced my experience, making it memorable. Because of Amber, Im already looking forward to my next visit. Shes a great asset to the club, and her service alone is a reason to come back. Highly recommend!

From like 2019: Good service and nice music. The fried chicken and waffles was good. The shrimp and grits...not so much. The shrimp were overcooked and the overall dish was unseasoned.

First I’ve been here plenty of times before but this time was different. I was charged $100 to park where typically I always pay about $20 to park on the premises. Then I get inside and I’m told I can’t get any hookah or food unless I purchase a section with the cheapest bottle being $300. Typically when I come we always sit in the section and order our drinks and hookahs and they always tell us that if someone purchases the section we would have to move, but many times we’ve done this and nobody ever purchases the section we’re in. This time was just different and the service behind it was just nasty. I will not be returning nor will I recommend anyone else to the establishment

Karaoke VS Trap night, no one would serve me drinks. I had to complain multiple times...so sad 😔 because the location is nice. I will not be back.

Had a great experience at the club a last year listening to spoken work and the music was on point. The worst part of it was my experience with one of the girls at the front taking payment. She was very rude when I asked for my money back for entry even though we had a section. Customer service goes a long way but the talent and music made for a great experience.

This place has good vibes and a great setup. The food and drinks are overpriced but we had a good server so no complaints service wise. The shrimp and grits was mediocre at best. No flavor and they added a slice of American cheese which wasn’t fully melted when brought to the table.

Come out for some great food and a great time

All of the bottle girls rude except Ebony and this other girl with a bun. $50 hookah you would think they would be pleasant but they are very stand-off”ish” I thought the personality type was a requirement for employment. Come around 2 for a seat. My server was late and seemed like she hated her job. The menu items were decent just horrible horrible service.

I had an amazing time last time I was there . This is my new spot moving forward , service from Jasmine was beyond incredible. She was very nice and makes all of us feel like home , it was just amazing, our drinks came on time less than 7mn and hookah as well . She came back more than 3 times to make sure we were okay . Definitely will be back this Sunday .. When you go there please ask about Jasmine !!!! She is the best ever !!

Great vibe, fun times playing games for grownups like giant Jenga and giant Connect Four with a tasty Moscow Mule (my personal fav) in hand. It looks like they post daily specials on a little whiteboard. The wings are pretty solid, but you really want to be there when Chef Lito comes through. If you go maybe well end up playing together!

It was a storm approaching the Sunday I went but management and staff was nice just wasnt much of a crowd. Bottle of champagne was $30 and came with 2 small juices of choice.Would like to go back next time I visit but for the 4-7 day party on Sundays

This place deserves a 0 star simply because they don’t have parking the prices are so high and they don’t live up to the price. Hookahs 50 dollars & they trash. I didn’t taste the food, so no comment. The DJ was super rude. No parking & the area ghetto. I wouldn’t lie to you or waste my time typing this. Don’t go here. Especially if you are celebrating a bday. You will not be pleased.

I was dissapointed there were only 3 real food trucks... That said I got a Strawberry Funnel cake. It was incredible... Scoop of ice cream in middle... Wow.... Also have other tents set up, like the Drizzle Balloons... What a cool idea...

This is a glorified hookah bar, food and drinks were awful unseasoned and overpriced. The grits were like soup. Also the DJ went from playing Gospel to Back dat azz up super weird transition! We left immediately after.

If I could give them zero stars, I would. First off, the guy stopped me at the door just to SEE if they had enough room after checking my ID. There weren’t that many people in there for him to do that. Then I sat at this booth for 20 minutes and not one server stopped by to even acknowledge me. I don’t know if it was because I was there by myself and was not with a group, but it was unacceptable!

Amber was a great a server. Very attentive and nice personality. We’ll definitely be back!

Good food and music. But the service and management were awful. The “bottle girl” argued back and forth with my mom because she had to wait 45 minutes for her food to be remade and apparently the girl forgot to ring it in. Then the manager (a tall lightskin lady) came and didn’t even speak to my mom first but instead asked the bottle girl what happened. They continued to go back and forth and finally she said “don’t worry about it” and walked off. We waited longer for a new check but it never came, so we assumed they took care of it? No apology or “It’s our fault so we’ll take care of your meal”. They just never came back. So now we’ll never come back.

This place is all about the ambience.We came for brunch and they had a live band with different singers coming up and performing. It was such a great vibe!We had a waiter who seemed to be serving most of the tables, yet she was quick, efficient, and friendly. We did not wait long for anything.The brunch menu is a little small, but the food is good. The chicken was very good.

I called this a trap music roach motel. People were all up on top of ea other no space to breathe. I like to dance this would have never worked. Glad i was able start my night at the Brooklyn Collective and bring my new year. Cuz this spot i immediately left.

I came on a Thursday night which is R&B night which I highly recommend the DJ played all the jams from Old school to new school nice atmosphere and bartenders and drinks were good and they have a parking lot free to park. Clean and nice atmosphereDefinitely coming back they also had the NBA playoffs on the TVs as well.

Cons: We booked a section for $300 and it was literally a couch that could only fit 2 people when were told the section could fit 8 people. When we got there they told us that everyone could stand around the couch. After enough complaining they finally moved us, we were a party of 6. Ordered food and the fries they brought me were old, but they did replace them. Also felt like their drinks weren’t strong.Pros: Aside from these things, me and my group add a good time. It was a theme night and they had a mechanical bull so that was fun. Chicken wings were good, and the music was cool. Would ultimately go back.

The male bartender on Sunday night was really nice! He let us know the best nights to come, so we’ll definitely be back!

Its an okay spot for social events but the waiter tried to change me $60 for hookah and I was like you gotta be out of your mind! Everything in there is overpriced for no more than what you get. Even charge $4 for weak Shasta gingerale.🙃

Worst experience ever !! Will not be going back .. never pay with a card here always have cash their girls like to give their self a pretty good tip when one is not deserved . 60$ hookahs . 15$ drinks . Section was small for 8 people not everybody could sit down . Awful .

The atmosphere was everything. It was very nice, the drinks and the server was great. The food was nasty. It was so horrible. The chicken was burnt and dry and all you can taste was charcoal. The mac n cheese was trash. But everything else was great. Will return for drinks and entertainment only.

We were charged $30 at the door by security for a table. I thought that was odd because I have never paid. When I asked the workers there about the fee, they skated around the question. I even emailed them about the charger and didnt receive an answer. We were there at 1pm on a Saturday.Otherwise the wings were great and the salmon and grits were on point.I didnt care for the mimosas (made with sparkling wine and juice).The DJ was doing his thing.

First time at Recess and I had the shrimp and grits. They were amazing. Great environment. I also had the most AMAZING server. Winnie made sure everything was correct and continuously checked on my table. Best service i’ve had in a VERY LONG TIME!! Will return on the strength of her!

I heard great things before I actually visited so I was excited to go. Once there, I wasnt impressed or maybe I just went on the wrong night. The crowd seemed to be 25 and younger, it was super packed and no room to move around or breathe. I guess for that age group thats ok. However, bartender and servers were really nice. And the guy in charge of the hookah kept it going. I probably wont return.

I live at the neighbor of this place and suffer from the loud and bad music every weekend until 2:00 am. This night club is not holding its sound properly. All of our pulte community suffer from it.

Sunday’s Brunches are super lit. The food is just ok, so you can skip the meal. but the mimosas, drinks, hookah,music, crowd, and everything else is amazing. This is for a younger crowd, I’d say 25-35. The music will be loud and the songs will be current. The energy in the place was great. Everyone dancing and interacting with each other. The bottle girls were ALL so beautiful and gave great service. There’s lots of security so you feel safe. Their checking bags and IDs before you even get in. It’s spaced out so covid procedures are being followed. The ratio of men to women was great. I didn’t feel like a piece of meat in a jungle. Overall, def check this place out. #BrownGirlswhoBrunch

Delays to get a drink. But they are good once you get them! 🍸 There is hookah (fyi if you like smoke) and the karaoke is lit. Have ya song picked out right when you come in.

Server was nice, food decent and limited, atmosphere a mess mainly because there is no dress code and someone was in there with pajamas and another in a towel. Also, they processed my final bill for more than what I signed.

Nice place. Drinks were a little expensive and there was cover (even though not advertised on the flyer). Cool environment on Fridays. Came at 12:30 and the DJ had left for the night. Still good music & fun games available. The place has a kickback environment. I wouldnt usually pay a cover to go to a kickback & play cards. Nevertheless, it is fun environment. Next time Ill come prepared with more money.

I am relocating to Charlotte, so this was my first time at Recess and it definitely wont be my last...I had an Amazing time...Food was great, drinks were great and the best thing of all was our waitress/superwoman, Codi. She was absolutely amazing. If you could clone her, Id take her with me. She went above and beyond and made us feel like family. She is by far, the best waitress I have ever had anywhere and Im not exaggerating either. She was awesome. Will definitely be coming back again and again!!!

Great place to unwind and relax for small to midsize gatherings, however if you are more on the introverted side, may not be the place for you for large gatherings. Seating is limited and the bar can get overwhelming to get a drink. The venue is nice with a decent patio area. Parking is very limited so more than likely you would use street parking. Venue offers food and hookah.

I get a table almost every year for my birthday. Great music, nice employees and awesome customer service. They show nothing but love here.The vibe here is amazing. 5/5

Im from New York l was in Charlotte visiting a friend and she took me here, I must say I was pleasingly happy that the spot was black-owned and it was a great atmosphere and the music was awesome, I had a great time and will be back again whenever Im in town.

Its a cramped space and its OK inside. Cant smoke tobacco on the patio outside either which makes no sense if youre allowed to smoke hookah outside. The bouncer guy on the patio was annoying AF out there and was similar to policing like a hall monitor. Will not be back

The drinks are strong and the vibe is cool. The food leaves a lot to be desired. The wings were basically flavorless, and the shrimp and grits were lumpy. If youre coming to drink and be sociable, Recess is a 4-star. If youre coming to eat, then its a 2-star.

The ambiance was absolutely electric. The pull pork cheese fries were uniquely flavored and the wings are some of the best in Charlotte. The games are a nice touch to an already awesome bar experience. Its definitely a place to put on the list as an every week watering hole...

I visited this establishment for Game Night. It is smaller than I expected and there is hardly anywhere to sit. They have couches, but they are reserved for people who are purchasing bottles of alcohol. The only good things were the rum punch, wings and fries. Only problem with that is you order food and there is no place to sit and eat. I was disappointed, and I would not recommend this place for a night out.

I came here with my friend after hearing about this place forever ! I’m sooo glad we made this choice. It’s a really chill spot and offers hookah and a Great DJ ! My favorite part of this the bartender Ashley !!!!!! Omg her personality she makes my drinks the way I like it!!! Will definitely put this on my favorite places to vibe out in the city! I attended a Sunday afternoon event at Recess to celebrate my nephews 21st Birthday. They offer a fun environment with life size Jenga and Connect 4 games, TVs, hookah service and an outside patio. The bartender definitely makes the drinks with love...meaning, they are not watered down.

In my opinion, Recess is the best place to be in the entire Queen City!! The people make the experience great each and every time. Awesome vibes and atmosphere for sure. Ashley is the best bartender in Charlotte! She’s personable and really takes care of her patrons! She makes awesome drinks and makes sure everyone is well taken care of! Her representation of Recess is always positive and top notch! 5 stars!!!!

Terrible experience overall. The staff was rude, disrespectful, unprofessional, and tasteless. They overcharged our group and when asked to speak to management, all of a sudden everyone was the manager or part owner but nobody could manage or own the situation. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone that has experienced a premium club experience because you will not get that here. The VIP sections are cheaply put together and crammed together in this small hot building. Everything was overpriced for the quality. Music was blah, if you are a professional that is 30+ this probably isn’t they place for you.

Limited seating, but very accommodating in general. Always a Grown and Sexy type of vibe. Wednesdays are My personal favorite, with a Live Band, Poets, Musicians and a host of other Creatives why wouldnt it be.

The concept behind Recess is solid, but the execution isn’t quite there yet. It’s a place with identity issues...is it an adult playground (there are lots of games, skee ball, pop a shot, etc)? Is it a club? Is it a restaurant? There’s a lot going on here. I’m not sure who the target clientele is either. All that being said, the staff/service is fantastic, and the place itself has a lot of potential. I’ll definitely return and encourage others to check it out. Belmont is a wonderful neighborhood, and the local businesses contribute to that. Advertising and promoting Recess through all the social media channels would certainly help. People simply don’t know this place exists right now.

There seemed to be limited items available, possibly due to their recent opening. The food and drinks available were good. We ordered lamb sliders, fried wontons and blackened salmon tacos. Still, I would have rated it a 4 if the server hadnt ignored me the entire visit. I think maybe she decided my boyfriend was paying so it was more efficient to just focus on him. They have a good sound system and a decent selection of games although the Ring and hook game didnt seem to be complete. Overall I think this will be a nice spot once they iron out the kinks.

So excited about the opening of this place. The food is amazing, huge fan of the wings and their chicken and waffle!!! A great atmosphere and a fantastic addition to catch a Panthers game with the new season rolling in.

Brunch is amazing! Brunch flyers said they opened at 1, but they were not ready for customers until 1:30 and closed promptly at 5. also they were out of many menu items (ex no waffles for chicken and waffles) and did not serve specialized cocktails that are on the online menu. However the quality of food made up for them being out of so many items. The shrimp basket, steak and eggs, and fries are 🔥🔥🔥

I went before it was very nice , the host was amazing both times, the only situation that was different was we had too pay $100 too sit near the stage or on the stage last time we came we found seating and was not charged .. but overall it was good

Recess is a great establishment to have an event! It provides a laid back vibe for those who do not like going to the club, but want to get out and have a few drinks with friends & enjoy some great arcade/interactive games. Its in a great up and coming area of Charlotte!

I was in town for a Panthers game and wanted to find a local spot to chill on a. Saturday. I pulled up my FB events section and The Recess had an open invite. The Recess reminds me a chill place in the DMV or the ATL. Overall nice vibe, music playlist was awesome and The Recess felt welcoming for out of towners. The reason for 4 stars... the floors were a sticky, the couch seating system works if you have a group who knows each other...but I doubt strangers want sit together on the larger 3 -4 person couches. The coffee tables were too low for comfortable food consumption. (Recommend little higher tables.) Lastly.... the drinks were a little pricey.... two mixed drinks $24 before the tip. I see so much potential and look forward to visiting again if the Panthers make the playoffs.

I came to Recess and was serviced by a waiter who I ordered a hookah and a drink for $25 when I received receipt I gave the waitress $40 as I’m waiting to receive my change ... she never came back. When I approached waitress on my change. She proceeded to tell me I only gave her $25. Spoke to manager and she acted as if she couldn’t do anything about it. Be careful when you come here. Bad customer service.

This is a bar & lounge. BE AWARE! Apparently this is a cash only or card with chip reader only bar. (NO SIGNS POSTED) The manager stated she was too lazy to read their register instructions to learn how to submit manual transactions. SO PLEASE BE AWARE: If your card does not have a chip reader they will point you to their atm where it is a 5.00 service charge. 😬Bartender: Throws away your receipt and demands the merchant copy with no offer to print it. Nasty attitude she was terrible.Food: AMAZING! The chicken was cooked to perfection and well seasoned.Servers & Floor Runners: Never see them. Oh wait...you see them when they come out with V.I.P bottles and thats it. I was in V.I.P. and rarely saw them.

I stopped by Recess yesterday on my way home, ordered (2) Tempura Shrimp Tacos, an order of chicken wings (8) and an order of Truffle fries. 20 minutes later when paying for the order I realized that they forgot the Tacos, no apology and no remorse. Very surprising when I paid $19 plus for (8) wings and a few fries! Asked for the wings to be as hot as possible, they were the opposite; very mild. Overpriced food and service that needs to be improved upon.

The bartender acted bothered by your presence, they told us food would be 15 minutes and it took over an hour, they ran out of chicken wings($12 for 4 wings btw) and mozzarella sticks which was all they had on the short menu, the couch was covered in ants, the waiters sat on their phones, the floor feels like its covered in grease, theres paint missing on the walls, theres outdoor furniture and cleaning supplies scattered all over the place and the bathrooms were disgusting. Avoid this place.

This probably a great place but tonight was awful. Our waitress was terrible in VIP like really. Ok had no cook and was told we could order some food since cook called in. A cook came by the time our food got here and they said we couldnt bring it in like wow!!!! That dj and Mc was EVERYTHING. You made my night a lot better thank you.

I would give them a half star if I could. Been there twice and both experiences were terrible. If you have any class and wanna have a great time do not go here!!!!

When we got there around 8:30pm we were told that the white section with the colorful walls were first come first serve. Later on in the night about 11pm we found out that another group purchased the two sections we were in. I wish the bar tender or whoever is in charge of the selling the sections would have approached us to let us know the details had been sold versus allowing the other patrons to approach us. The wings and fries were also overcooked. For those two reasons, I rated them a 2. The bar tender was friendly.

The website says they offer swings, 4square, tetherball and outdoor activities, but when my friends and I went to check it out we were beyond disappointed. There was 1 pool table and some couches. There may have been a few games but nothing that was listed on the website that made us excited was there or available. Absolutely not worth the trip. Over priced drinks & the staff looked bothered that we were there

One person was nice. The rest of the people who worked there were rude. Located in Bellmont neighborhood, not Plaza Midwood. Drinks were weak and overpriced. Was inside area where there were some couches to chill. The decore made me feel like I was picking up my 4 year old niece from daycare. It gave a creepy feel like where a pedophile might go to think about kids while at a bar. Gross! Came back to see if I had a one bad time. Same atmosphere and food trucks were okay. Lots of parents with strollers. One clipped me on the back of my ankle. To far from everything else. Not worth the money.

Wonderful customer service. Best Moscow Mule Ive had in a very long time. Plenty of fun interactive games to play. Food was great as well. Will be returning.

Nice but a little over priced in my opinion. They are proud. I do enjoy myself here but then once I leave think to myself, I couldve gone somewhere else and gotten more for my money. Overall though this is a nice place. And really nice people.

Although it was a private event, this place did not offer a good first impression, the one bartender they had was attentive and nice, but was eating a full on plate of food behind the bar; we all have to eat, which is why I blame management for it since she probably was stretched thin as breaks and ..(Ironically) recesses are often cut short or just not there as management does not seem / are not willing to account dor these breaks into capacity. This is specially true for waiters waitresses and bartenders .. Anyway, whatever the reason was, it just doesnt look good and it shows an overall lack of care for the staff.The place overall does not offer a noticeable identity or theme in my opinion.

Will definitely be back! Love the potential in this place --I can see so many additional opportunities for this space and format, including birthday parties and even coworking space during the day. Would love to see some free play space by making good use of the walls: dry erase paint and markers for pictionary, hangman, etc. Looking forward to the outdoor space renovation; foursquare space, please! Trivia, karaoke, you know. High hopes for Recess Charlotte-- check it out :)

I came here with my child yesterday because it was posted on Facebook that Santa would be ther with gifts for the kids only to find out by the manager that it hoax. I was genuinely disappointed and heartbroken for my 5 year old because we are having hard times right now and I just wanted to brighten her spirit. The staff was extremely friendly though...

Attended a black food truck Event here I must say IT WAS AMAZING. Pricing was great music and laughter. Everyone was Friendly. Then inside of the venue is very unique 😊

Where is Recess? Once I find it I can rate it 😅 the address for Recess has a different bar name on the building. Plus it was closed. Disappointing because it was posted on FB that there was a day party at Recess. However, no one was there when we arrived.

I went during a brunch party called I Still Love The 90s with a live DJ. Overall, this place has a good atmosphere with nice lounge sofas to relax on.

This place is amazing! I will definitely make this one of my favorite places to eat. Great Restaurant, friendly and welcoming. Chicken and waffle was delicious. Food was quick and staff was amazing.

Servers has nasty attitude and if you don’t have a table(buying a bottle) good luck getting any service. We even asked for a manager and she was Rude.

Recess is always fun any night of the week. It is a casual hang out spot for adults with games and good drinks. The music is always good and people go to have a good time.

Went on erotic poetry night last night for the first time (its every Wednesday btw), and was pleasantly surprised. Great personality from the bartender, themed drinks, pretty tasty barfood, and a great host and DJ. #goodvibes

They could decorate a little more. Simple concrete floors inside combined with the outside look of the building make for a kind of BLAND ambiance otherwise nothing spectacular but ok overall. Could pave their parking lot too gravel lot is so 20th century.

Great establishment for brunch or gatherings with family and friends. Lots of games, with bar and adequate indoor and outdoor seating. You can also book the venue for private events with full catering.

I’m familiar with all the black owned venues in the city and I make it my business to support when I step out. Unfortunately I step out to support my bro for his birthday and the female In charge of booking sections mishandled me and my circle. Very rude when we’re only here to spend money with y’all.

Friendly staff, clean, upbeat environment, very accommodating. As a avid MMA fan, they quickly put on UFC when I asked about it. Huge deal, especially during college football season!

Awesome new place in Charlotte with a unique vibe tailored to any crowd and age. Service was prompt, food was delicious and extremely fair in price (do not leave without trying the Korean Sliders), drinks were delectable and have their own personal touch to it (do not leave without trying the fishbowl) and last there is always fun in the air, shuffle board, jenga and other games to keep you occupied.

Very cute spot. Didn’t get a chance to eat there bcuz they stopped serving. But I’ll definitely be back again!

This is a great place to relax and enjoy some good food and drinks with friends. My Shrimp tacos were full of flavor and the size of the shrimp were impressive.

Terrible establishment ….. the location is terrible … barely any parking …. The food is okay could be better … everything kind of high price not really worth it and the owner put his hands on a civilian who told him he didn’t want to fight but the owner lost…..

Went with recess for the first time with a friend the places is in a very nice location inside is very nice went during the weekday the vibes was still good great selection in music my waitress winnie was on point was engaging check up on us when we needed anything refilled our drinks and it was fairly busy that day to Ill definitely be coming back to the place

Recess Charlotte has a great atmosphere with great food & drinks. I definitely recommend for any type of occasion. Sliders, flatbread pizza, quesadillas, tuna nachos are all amazing!

I had an excellent time at recess. I went there to an African festival. There were a lot of entertainers there and the people were very friendly and assisting you and getting around.

Hosted a birthday party here. Food and drinks were great and staff was very attentive and friendly. Loved the games!

Place is spacious. At the time I went they were still doing renovations. Somethongs were visibly being worked on. Would love to visit once everything is completed.

This place is dangerous. It attracts unsavory and unruly clientele. Police are regularly called to this place to break up fights. Trashy place.

Karaoke Tuesday! It was packed, real good crowd, especially for a Tuesday.

Pulled up for a drink seeing that it was around the corner from my job driving back to my shop to clock out....drink (especially mines) a bit pricey but they have a magic that was free...so it made up for the price...Caribbean breed
