This is hands down, pound for pound without a doubt my single most favorite place in KC.From the music, to the food, the staff, the various and diverse patrons... Just the whole vibe of this place is great.Ive met friends here, Ive met potential employers here, Ive met women here. Ive discovered great local talent here. The Phoenix Mac is easily one of my favorite dishes of all time here in the city. Pro tip: get the chicken fried and then tossed in the molten or jerk sauce.
We were there during Sunday brunch. The food was OK—no complaints. The service was excellent. There was live music while we were there—two vocalists and an electronic organ. The musicians were very good but the sound level for the instrument and the mics was excessively loud. This is a small space and this kind of decibel level way out of balance. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism—I’ve been here several times, and when there was live music, the volume was too loud.
Fun and lively place after 6-7 pm. Live music that definitely will fit whatever mood your in. Great cocktails and food is ok. Always have had a good experience here throughout a lot of years!
Came here for Saturday brunch 10am-2pm and listened to Alex Abramovitz and HisSwingn Kansas City Jazz Band. Amazing band which took request from a birthday Party and performed to perfection. My server Abby made a stiff awesome old fashion. Must come if you visit Kansas City! Support the infrastructure which at least pay musicians to perform live! Came back and enjoyed another round of hospitality, live music and drinks by lovely bartender Miranda. Easy transportation by free Kansas City Street car, stop at North Loop, then walk cross parking lots.
Brunch is in a rough patch. I used to love it here but there have routinely been problems the last 3 times I’ve been. Most recently we were served eggs Benedict with cold food and over cooked eggs. When we asked for new food, we were told it’d take a while as they’d have to treat it as a whole new order. We waited an additional 45 minutes and never got our food.Staff was quick to blame each other rather than work out how to actually get something done— frequent behind the bar gossiping in front of guests and doing shots with regulars instead of covering tables. Can not recommend spending your Sunday at the Phoenix in its current fashion. The only saving grace is the band is great and keep the atmosphere lively.
My 94 year old friend had been looking forward to listening to jazz music and having Sunday brunch at The Phoenix for months. Her heart was shattered when I pushed her wheelchair up to the front door and it was not wheelchair accessible. When we asked where the wheelchair entrance was the hostess pointed back at the steps leading up to the front door and said there is also a ramp in the basement but it also has steps. I thought all businesses had to be wheelchair accessible by law. You broke her heart.
The place is a great time but the parking is so bad! Is there a way you guys can have your own parking lot? You get a lot of traffic in here but lil parking. Cars getting towed because we parking in spots we didn’t know we couldn’t park. Would be better if yall had yall own parking
The live jazz band was wonderful! Her voice is beautiful 😍The food- We ordered the spinach artichoke dip, chicken strips and a Philly for the group. Chicken strips were okay theyre fried to almost be burnt looking but didnt taste bad. The spinach dip was nasty! No artichokes in it. It taste like they just melted a block of cream cheese and added spinach to it. Now the drinks total rip off. I ordered a margarita to the point I had to order my second drink with no ice because they basically fill your glass up with ice I had four sips in my glass literally sips! I would only go back for music I wouldnt order anything
Great food. Great music. Kinda small venue so the very good music is very loud. A problem for some. Not a problem for others.
Very cool jazz spot in downtown (8th and Central)! The bar is solid and they have outdoor patio seating with skyline views. The food is great too- went there for brunch one Sunday and everything was phenomenal. Try the hangover cure (fried pork tenderloin with biscuits and gravy - see pix)! The shredded corned beef was very tasty too. Bonus: they always have live jazz, and there is a lot of history there!
Great place for jazz. Had a good time. My only disappointment was I thought it was a stage type venue.Food and drinks were awesome.
It’s hard to rate just the food, because the live music is such an integral part of this place and adds so much to the dining experience! As far as jazz brunches that I have been to this takes the cake for being the best. The music wasn’t too loud through the open door to the patio where I was sitting and the food itself was stellar. The French toast was an unexpected winner, with the biscuits and gravy coming in so closely at second. Perfectly savory and wonderfully sweet. It was truly a great morning.
Excellent mushroom burger with onions, tomato, and hummus with feta cheese. Only $9. Substituted steamed veggies instead of fries for $2 more. Soup or salad is also an option. Many traditional meat choices also. Inviting old world bar and grill atmosphere and friendly staff. My meal was excellent. Good enough make it my regular lunch stop when in Kansas City.
A very good music club. Excellent service, good music and reasonable food. The pretzels are worth a visit.
Our egg skillet tasted like rust from the un-cleaned cast iron dish it was served in. Expensive prices for the quality of food. I’ve been here twice and had to throw away a dish each time.Last I heard, they were trying to sue the HOA, literally their neighbors and the community they exist in. Who the heck does that?
The Phoenix is a Kansas City institution! Unfortunately, it is not accessible. There are not unisex restaurants here. This is an excellent place to enjoy a slice of true Kansas City. Often times there is music here, sometimes scheduled, and sometimes jam sessions. The food is tasty, the drinks are poured well. And the services good. Seating is tight and the space is not very large but the experience is excellent!
So… where do I start? The music- Lee Langston was great! He’s quite the entertainer. But the establishment and the service was quite lacking. As you can see I don’t give bad reviews very often. I waited 30 minutes and asked 4 times for a Buffalo Trace- neat (bourbon). That should not be that hard. The food took forever. I may revisit this place but only for a drink (if I can get one) and the music. The chicken strip did look good but i got the chips and queso app. Not impressed at all. Maybe you will have a better experience. I will be waiting a bit before I go back.
We went there on Tuesday night which is “jam” night. It was great! Lots of really good people participated.
Loved everything about our evening here! Fantastic music, attentive bartenders, tasty food, wonderful atmosphere!!
The live singer on Friday evening was amazing and his setlist had amazing songs I loved on it. The drinks are a bit too pricey but I got a moscow mule and vodka cranberry and the bartender was heavy with the alcohol both times, which I love. My friend had to have some ginger beer added to her moscow mule though.☆If you find my review helpful please click the helpful button!☆
Very nice atmosphere and mature crowd. Amazing artisanal cocktails and good food.
I was served a “skillet” on a cast iron pan that tasted like rust and unwashed dishes. The crab cakes were literally inedible. Only good thing here is the beautiful location and the music.
Every time I come the environment is nice and welcoming food delicious only thing I will say is keep the water coming takes a little while to get refill but other then that music and food excellent
I went to the Phoenix a couple of times when i was a young Chef and its been over 20 years since i have been there. On 4-20-2019 my wife and I went for a get together there for my best friend and his wifes 29th year anniversary and we had one of the best times in a while because we work so much. We hung out with the singer Lori Tucker and she was super cool, the food was excellent. My wife had the jerk chicken tenders and i had the burger and both were killer, my wife and i danced and just had a great time and we cant wait to come back. Long time Phoenix legend Tim Whitmer was on point as usual, great time.
Great little spot for live music. Good food and outside seating as well. I especially love this as a happy hour spot. Expect to pay $5 cover if you’re there during the shows.
DEC 2023 Update---- Once again, what a hidden gem in KC! The live music and overall vibe is what really sets this place a part from all other similar locations. We enjoyed our time so much on the Tuesday we visited that we came back the next night, and had an even better time with the impromptu musicians just joining in with the current band. Highly recommend visiting if youre ever in the area!Review from DEC 2022 -- THIS is the place to go for LIVE MUSIC and GREAT FOOD on a weeknight! We visited on a Tuesday and were blessed with hearing the piano talents of Walt and the singing abilities of Talya, who can really belt it out with the best of them! What a great vibe, a welcoming atmosphere and even unexpected back up singers from the crowd! What an unexpected treat!
What a fantastic pre-Christmas evening. Thank you to the fine musicians and fabulous staff. If you have not been to the Phoenix, GO! Go hungry. Go thirsty. Go with friends. Go and make new friends.
Great place to vibe and chill with some live music, tasty food too!
The Phoenix is one of those places that has it all. Great food (try molten tenders or French dip), amazing cocktails (best Old Fashioned in KC) and some historic vibes. My favorite time to come is on Tuesdays when Talya is the singer. Fun times!
They had a $5 cover which I didn’t like but if it went to pay for the performer then I’d gladly pay for it. We were there for a going away party for a friend, our service was terrible. As soon as we said one thing to the server he ran away, I know it was busy there but he was just not really attentive or patient. This place also nickel and dimed me on my bill, I asked for extra Parmesan and Caesar dressing and they charged me .25 cent for Parmesan and .50 cent for Caesar lol. Is this place really that broke that they can’t afford an extra sprinkle of Parmesan and a 2 ounce ramekin of Caesar dressing? We also ordered a drink and asked for a double shot, they charged me $10 for this “shot” which was the smallest shot I’ve ever seen, it was definitely less than an ounce. The best part of my experience was the performer she was amazing and had so much pure and light energy. I don’t think I’m in a rush to come back to this place. The service left a bad taste in my mouth, and the warm expired lettuce they put in my wrap LITERALLY left a bad taste in my mouth. Who the hell puts lettuce in a Philly cheesesteak wrap???????????
Music was great! So small paid 5 bucks to get in so we could eat, but no table. Glad they gave me money back. Because of that I will go back to try the food that was highly rated by a friend!
Cool, intimate atmosphere with good live music.
The young lady that helped our table was excellent, we did arrive too late for food unfortunately. The band Friday night was fun and entertaining while we were having our drinks.
This place is really nice. It’s been around since the 80’s The entertainment is really good. They have an affordable happy hour. The food is good and Saturday brunch is good. Try it out and you’ll like it.
Amazing atmosphere. You really should get your table by 4pm as the live band starts at 430. They take requests and are great with walking around during their solos, giving the best personal experience. The food is awesome and well priced. Their happy hour is very fair and the servers work very quickly, thorough, and will not let you down. A+ service
Amazing food and drinks! I’ve never liked Bloody Mary’s, but the bartender Lauren made my husband’s Bloody Mary so good, that by default, it became mine. Our server Andy was all jokes and made us feel at home, super attentive and quick!Definitely come check out live jazz music here!
Saturday night, after midnight and everyone (including management) not pleased that the joint is not hoppin...your loss (if youre reading) my gain, crazy BMW 😜 playing and you missed it! Come every Saturday night, a superb vibe, Anataya is superb, probably all, come, youll miss it otherwise!
Great Place with excellent jazz band. We went Sat at noon, and were seated right away. The jazz band included a sax and trumpet, both were seasoned pros. The fried chicken with the Chicken and Waffle was some of the best we have ever had, and we are from NOLA! A classic KC spot!
I came here because i had a night planned for the symphony. I was blown away by the music, drinks and class of The Phoenix. The name is earned and owed: this place is immortal. Talya and The Boyfriends actually know jazz like the back of their hands. Get here, you need this place.
Went there Thurs night to go see Nikki playing. Got there it was myself ,wife and 5 month old.nikki like us and waitress did also. was good until around 9.another employee I think came over and told us we had to leave since did not allow younger in there after 9. So give us things so we could take are food to go.had to ask waitress for ticket since she was unaware. Would have been nice to know from get go.that way wouldnt have gotten to kozy being there and wouldnt have my meal interrupted. Would have avoid the whole place.hopefully it was the truth and not malarkey because of and individual try to go above and beyond. Which was weird since not much people were there. Was trying to support local yet will not go there for a while.will just have to catch Nikki playing at another location for now on
Food was REALLY good. Love the atmosphere. Drinks were a little pricey but it was still worth it. Waiters were really great and attentive. Even the brand new guy was super great. The live music was so fun and really good! That guy had some range. And they played all kinds of songs in a jazz way it was really cool. Im sorry for not remembering the name of the artists. Ill definitely be stopping back buy next time I come to Kansas.
We arrived at the restaurant and noticed that we were the only other table inside. I ordered a roast beef sandwich and my dinner companion had the Mac and cheese. Both selections were sub par. After taking a couple of bites, my friend told our server that he didnt care for it. She offered another selection, but by that time, we were ready to leave. Our bill was $38 for a dried out sandwich, inedible Mac and cheese and 2 glasses of water. Our server did not offer to comp our meal. Dont waste your time.
Very Popular, Modern Blues BarThey have a full bar with a menu featuring Whiskey and Bourbon focused drinks, about 10 locally brewed beers on tap, and a very capable bar staff. Their signature Old Fashion shows their bar-craft that pays attention to small details which have big payoffs. The menu is straightforward, well crafted American cuisine (burgers, sandwiches, appetizers and salads). Their breaded chicken is the best Ive ever had with an amazing crunchy crust. Their fries stayed crisp and delicious for a long time while we sat and listened to the live music. Prices range from $10-20 per dish and about $10 per drink. The music focus is more toward a upbeat, fun and modern blues (not so much the My Baby left me...). The venue is loud - the acoustics of the restored brick walls doesnt offer much sound dampening. The lights are very low - we had to use the flash on our phones to read the menu or to take a picture.Overall, it was a great experience.Oh, and call ahead to see if theres a cover charge.
Took my wife (recently married) out for a first date night as a married couple, we stayed at 21c Museum Hotel and decided to go to the Phoenix and it did not disappoint! The music was fantastic, the energy was pure, cozy welcoming. We had the cajun pasta, it was absolutely delicious, hands down the best i have had in Kansas City. My wife is a big foodie and she rated the pasta 10/10 as i wouldve rated it 11/10. We fell in love with this bar and will for sure, be back! Thank you for giving us a bar to remember. Also, no pictures taken of the food because it was soooo good i didnt even think to take a picture. Next time!
I was at The Phoenix with a big group of people and we had a great time. The live music was decent and the atmosphere was light and fun. It was a little too dark in my opinion. Our poor waitress was the only waitress serving most of the building and our table alone had her hopping. She did a fantastic job! The food was fantastic! Everyone who ordered a meal said it was delicious. I had the chicken fried chicken and it was absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were thick and the gravy was creamy and wonderful. It was a bit salty for me, but I eat 0 salt in my daily diet. All in all it was a nice place to eat and I will definitely go back!
Great place!! Happy hour 4-6. Live music. Very good food - upscale bar food, but excellent quality. Friendly and efficient staff. Very comfortable.
Love the jazz brunch here. It’s a whole vibe.
Incredible grill and bar!! I live a few blocks away so I make a point of going somewhat regularly. The mac & cheese is second to none!! Ive had great m & c but nothing compares! The staff is fantastic. Theyre very friendly and you never have to wait for service. The live music is yet ANOTHER reason to go! Its a fun jazz/blues thats relaxing and not overpowering. Not a huge place so you never have to yell to be heard. I highly recommend trying them out!
By far the best bar, music venue, and restaurant in the Kansas City area! The live music is fantastic! The wait staff is even better! The wait staff and bartenders have so much fun and enjoy their jobs while keeping up with their tables and that is rare to see! Then you taste the food and are amazed that they have real food also!
Wonderful evening sipping martinis at the bar and and listening to local jazz!
The food was amazing and so was the music
Party atmosphere and quality music with a mostly older crowd. I ordered on the happy hour menu. Expect a $5 cover to enter, and it gets very busy on Saturday; they barely fit me in (party of one).I was hoping to hear more straight-ahead jazz but what I got was a wide variety of classic popular music and great showmanship.
This is the place to go if you enjoy live music and great food. They have amazing bartenders who know what theyre doing a great atmosphere and some of the best bands youll ever see. The food is far superior to that of anything you will find and local bars. The cover is usually $5 on weekends so bring a little cash but if no not worried ATM inside. I love this place and its always on my list to stop by whenever Im town.
Updated Review:It is a shame to see how bad this place has gotten. I was taking some out of town friends for some jazz and drinks and the door guy basically had to sprint from where he was to block our entry to tell us there was a $5 cover, which is normal for this place, but we werent even sure he was actually the door guy or some random person, based on appearance and hygiene. I asked if they had a table for 6 inside and he gave a big eye roll and said we could look for ourselves after we paid the cover. We politely declined and started to walk off and he said to the people dining outside $5 is just too much for some people I guessRating dropped from 4 star to 1.
This place has a great atmosphere, food, and service. The service was quick and accurate with a friendly attitude. We went on a Saturday night and they were playing live music. It was such a good place to have a genuinely good time. There was a small cover, but its worth it. They have tables and countertop space, however, space is limited. If youre looking for a chill spot that is fun, has food, and you can still socialize with your group; this is it!
Had my daughters engagement going away party back to Australia on Sunday and had their brunch it was amazing! The service was outstanding the music was divine and the atmosphere was just energetic definitely have to try this place out
Very disappointed. The food is cafeteria grade. The atmosphere is nice for a drink and socializing but this is NOT a place you plan an evening dinner around. The crab cakes were prepackaged, deep fried, with a barely there flavor. The queso is generic cheese melt, at best. Had the southerwest salad... its just iceberg lettuce with stuff on it. The chicken fried chicken was hospital good. For $75 plus tip... hard pass.
The place is small but a very nice venue. Live music on some nights. Happy hour.It seemed to have a lot of regulars so continues to be popular. The food was good and pricing reasonable. In an older restored building near the P&L district. I dont go in to the city much but would be happy to return here.
The brunch was quite delicious. The two musicians were great. A nice cozy place to enjoy brunch. The wait staff was a little scatterbrained, possibly because they were busy. The waitress was very apologetic and we were in no hurry. I would highly recommend for a Sat or Sun brunch.
Food was ok. Bloody Marys were ok. Nothing to write home about. Server didnt seem interested in being there, we got one word answers with no explanation of what was available. It was so loud we almost didnt go in. Apparently there a jazz band on Saturday mornings too, not just the afternoons/evenings. Didnt see that on the website. Not a great place for a quiet brunch for friends to sit and chat.
Came with some friends one Saturday night on a whim for live blues. Had a great time and saw that they had brunch. So we came back the next morning and had - most of us agree - the best brunch we could remember. All I can speak for is the biscuits and gravy, which were the best Ive had. There was live jazz that morning which just made it better.
Tacos are fantastic!! Hit up taco Tuesday!!
Came here on a Thursday night. My friends and I had a great time sipping on some solid drinks, and chatting with the super friendly bartenders, and listening to some very talented musicians playing for us live. We didnt even have to pay a cover charge. It was awesome. We really liked this place and we will definitely be back next time we are in downtown KC.
Went there last night ,after being away for 4 years and coming back to visit family Gotta say still love it. The music. The atmosphere the service and yes Kimberly. Really help. Us pick up what she suggested and recommended and WOW!!Great lady next time I come visit might bring my sax
Nice spot for cocktails, a couple snacks, and music.
Great food, great service. I went for brunch and we had the the classic burger, country fried steak, downtown dip, and crab cake Florentine benny. All were well made and properly portioned. The live pianist was fantastic and the staff was very friendly. Will definitely be going again!
Great historic place with a fun vibe! One of few late night live jazz places that serves food! And, they have live music every night! Took family that was visiting from out of town on a Thursday and we had a great time! Drinks not cheap, but the quality makes up for it! Definitely recommend!
Its been a few years since Ive been. I really like the place. For a work lunch place I go regularly now. The chicken fingers have a homemade batter. The tenderloin is not humongous but you might have two meals out of it. The french fries are also very good.
I love this place. My boss takes us here for lunch as a reward/wind down from time to time, so Ive been many times. Weve had one or two not so great experiences, but for the most part the staff is very friendly and the food is EXCELLENT. Some of the tables are wobbly though so watch out for that. I havent ever been during the evening so I cant speak to the jazz scene.
Awesome! Saturday Brunch!! Fantastic! Jazz playing while You enjoy Outstanding Food! The Staff is amazing ! Friendly ! Smiling! Really a Great Hangout!! Cozy Atmosphere!! A must go to place! You will start Your day off Right!!
Easily one of the best places in KC to spend an evening. The space has a great energy, the live music sets a perfect mood, and the drinks are strong, delicious, and surprisingly affordable! There is a $5 cover per person (at least later in the night), but it is SO worth it!!
Music was outstanding blend. Staff worked hard and very conscientous. Interior design is grand urban cool. Brick, stained glass, black. Beautifully air conditioned. Comfotable variable seating. Simply great atmosphere. Simply wonderful food, unique and fresh.
Really cozy. The bands are practically sitting with the crowd while playing. But the bands are good, the staff are friendly and the clientele are generally good folks who will let strangers sit with them if there is an empty seat. My only complaint is that as a jazz club, the cocktail and did menu could be a little higher quality.
Always looking for places we can take our teen son out to hear live music and he can go to the Phoenix until 8 PM so had an early dinner dine with the young one and husband. Food was devoured quickly and said to be delicious. Great service and we were made to feel quite comfortable with our under-aged musician.
We visited this restaurant/bar today. The food and music was good. Was surprised we had to pay a $5.00 cover charge, which was okay BUT the nasty and non-bathing man at the door with a bun on top of his head was also picking and choosing who he let in for free. In addition, he does not represent the establishment very well. PLEASE TAKE A BATH AND WASH THAT NASTY HAIR! You could look and smell that he was void of freshness. I was not happy that some of us had to pay while others had free entry. This guy needs to be REPLACED/CANCELED.
They have a $5.00 cover charge that is not bad and the band was awesome it was a lady with a gentleman on the piano and the lady was playing the guitar and her voice was awesome we all had beers and our total came to about $13 which I thought was very reasonable and I heard that they have excellent Cod! Definitely will be back!
Fun place on a Friday night for out of towners to listen to some jazz and grab a few drinks! Sliders and fries were amazing.
Live music. Great drinks. Serves late night hot food. What more could you ask for? The service can be slow as they get busy but they make up for it with friendliness. The live entertainment is great. Small smoking patio to enjoy a stogie with your martini. Kansas City gem!
Twenty-two years ago a friend took me to The Phoenix and it immediately became my favorite place. I haven’t been here since those times, but I think fondly of it to this day. I never liked the typical dance clubs or bars. This place is special to me.
Alrighty! This review! Yay! We walked in it was very busy to start with. We got there about 1100a.m. we sat right next to the waitress booth. She forgot to my order in. Put my boyfriends order in but not mine?! I understand it was busy and loud but they had only been open for 30 minutes for her to be so disoriented! Our service was not good. She spoke to us only to take our order. I was excited to go here but will not go back unfortunately. Place is very small. Laura was the name on the reciept.. She never introduced herself. Anyways hope this helps.
Great music in a relaxed and great historic building. Get there by 11 for brunch and beat the crowd. Food was very tasty and fresh. Had the crabcakes florentine. And friendly service. Nothing not to like. Plan on making the Sat brunch a habit. Felt like I was in New Orleans
Great atmosphere & live blues music. Great tasting, strong cocktails. Service was fantastic and I noticed our server making a point of bringing people water as it approached closing time. Will definitely go back
Out of towners that wanted a chill scene with good atmosphere and food; boy, did we get it! Chile was a great server, and supplied us with chicken tenders and sweet potato fries. (Seriously the best tenders we’ve had in a very long time!) Go and ask for him!
Favorite spot for date night and music therapy with THE Lee Langston and Band!!
Very poor food quality. We had a kindly waitress. But the food was horrible.I ordered a Reuben sandwich and eight less than half of it. The fries that came with it, tasted like they were fried with fish. I ordered a an alcoholic drink I cant remember the name but it had the word blue in it. It had very little alcohol and mostly just juice. There was a mandatory cover charge as they had a live band playing. The drummer tried to riff. But rarely played with the rest of the band. we left within 15 minutes of getting there. Not very well spent money.
An excellent dining experience with live music and a delicious brunch. I had chicken fried steak with sausage gravy, fried diced potatoes and scrambled eggs.
Sunday brunch is the best thing on planet earth. Easily my go-to hangover cure after a night out. They have the best Chicken and Waffles in the metro! The staff is incredibly friendly and the music is good.
Ive gone in the place once a week for years. My son has ate there on multiple occasions with me during lunch and dinner. We were turned away during lunch time today; with only 3 people in there, because they changed their policy. Must be 21! Its lunchtime; Thats cool, we can find somewhere else to spend my money and eat. You serve food, which means you are a restaurant..Sucks you turn longtime customers away because of a bull**** new daytime policy. Its not like your even busy!
I wish they had a better menu. I am not thrilled with any of the appetizers they offer, since when does artichoke dip have mayonnaise in it? The food is just mediocre so I try to eat before I go. The music is fabulous! Wait staff have always been nice and prompt.
We loved the atmosphere and the music for Jazz Brunch. The service was acceptable, the food was quite delicious with a few minor issues that might have been a fluke. Overall we plan to be back for another go.
If you haven’t ever tasted the chicken tenders and various unique, incredible sauces at The Phoenix, I suggest wearing a diaper. The experience will be shocking and sensational, so it is best to be prepared. BEST CHICKEN TENDERS IN TOWN.Also, outstanding customer service. Great atmosphere.
Great atmosphere and musical talent! This is a very cozy spot to grab some drinks and have some chilled-out fun. Prices are not bad at all. It would make an excellent date spot!
Alright, youre in KC and need something perfect to do? You go here. Its the best decision of your life. You order some delicious food and all of a sudden the sound of a trumpet fills the room...tap dancing on a bar, and a voice that just fills the room. You made the best decision. Hands down. You will feel consumed by beautiful music, delicious food and wonderful drinks. You made a great decision choosing The Phoenix for your evening plans.
Drinks and entertainment were great. Unfortunately, when closing time came and I mean on the dot. I was stalked by the waitress while I was in the bathroom washing my hands. I was told that my friends were looking for me and when I saw my friends they told mea “ we weren’t looking for you the staff was.” I understand that there is a specific time that certain establishments close but no customer should feel like they were forced out. Just my two cents.
First of all, they charged my girlfriend $2 to put ice in her drink .... Secondly, was disappointed by the quality of the food. Sure, I was expecting bar food but this was disappointing. For an exponentially better burger, just walk a couple blocks to Johns Big Deck. Was also disappointed by the lack of precautions taken in the middle of a pandemic. Despite social distancing mandates by the city, no employees were wearing masks and we were sat within inches of another table.
Seriously, such a wonderful jazz club! The live music is always fire and the people who work there add to this great experience! Of all the jazz clubs Ive been to both in Kansas City and on my travels, this is the best jazz club Ive been to so far.
Place was great! Fantastic live music. Bartenders were amazing! Loved it
Live music, patio seating, cold beer, friendly staff that were dressed sharp.Go buy a beer sit and enjoy some KC nightlife. my date enjoyed her meal as well, we will return.
The food is great. And the jazz is even better. Last Saturday of the month A La Mode plays and the Kansas City Canaries dance on the bar. Its a really fun time. Highly recommend.
First time not my last time, excellent service and the live music 🎶 was top notch, Nikki white was so good
The food was delicious. Chicken strip basket, they made those chicken strips from scratch, they were hand breaded. Reasonably priced. It was very, very loud. Nothing to buffer the sound of the jazz band. Deafening. $5.00 cover charge.
Great live music! Close to river market with other restaurants and bars. Just a few blocks to catch the street car down to union station and Crown Center.
Me and my date was looking for a place to bring in the New Year. We pulled and asked a few people standing out, how much to get in. We were told $65.00. I think thats highway robbery, just because its New Years Eve. I normally go and its free or 5-10.00 per person to get in. 65.00 for hats and noise makers ??? Really??
You all time favourite bar in Kansas City. Music, drinks, and staff are always on point. I have been here for evening drinks and for their brunch. Every time Ive been here and sat at the bar either a staff member has held great conversations or another person enjoying the music had been highly entertaining.
I had an amazing Rueben with some WONDERFUL live jazz playing for my birthday. The drinks were great. The bathrooms were clean. The menu wasnt too wordy and had the perfect items to choose from. One thing you cant find anywhere else in KC is that beautiful atmosphere. Jazz playing in the background was just icing on the cake.
Were told by a friend that it was a must go for brunch (emphasis on the biscuits and gravy) when visiting KC. While it was fine, I didnt find it as amazing as it was presented to us. Atmosphere and service were fine. Its just an average place to visit.
This is the spot I go to if I wanna hear some live music. Ive taken a few dates to The Phoenix and they loved it. The drinks are on point. They have a area for smoking in the back. But most of all, the entertainment is beautiful. They always have a great band on deck.
I asked the new manager if she was disappointed that her personal special event operation didnt work out. There is live music here and may be a bit hard to hear....all I heard was the owner of Phoenix offered her a better deal than some country club. It appears that she is very detail oriented...more than one napkin rolled up, excellent variety of cocktails which have been expanded to the happy hour list, a food menu which does offer healthy choices next to tasty fried bar food choices for an affordable price...this is the only establishment I have ever been in where the entertainment (KCs finest) was just as excellent as the beverages and food.
Great spot for a little entertainment during happy hour while enjoying food and beverages. We love the performance of Lonnie McFadden since he sings, taps, and plays several instruments. Awesome experience!
Love the Phoenix. Historic and fantastic vibe - some of the best bartenders in KC and the chicken fingers are to die for. Great music every single night. I frequent the Phoenix multiple times a week and am so glad it’s a part of Kansas City. A significant part.
Wonderful spot to soak up Kansas City culture! They often feature local jazz musicians and dancers. The drinks were lovely and the staff quick. Great place to spend an evening
Its a great place to just relax and enjoy the music. The service is always really good and enjoyable to be around. Food and drink is pretty good. A bit on the pricey side however, but nothing crazy really.
First time visiting during a conference - great service and even better live music. One of the servers compd a weak drink without issue. A couple hours inside and then a couple more outside with cigars. I would visit quite often if I could.
I like this place very much. Kind of depends on if youre going out to a concert and want to drink this place is for you. If you are going to hear some background jazz music and have a conversation with the other people at your table youre going to find yourself screaming and saying what? A lot. I kind of would like a lighter, quieter -Not So In Your Face Place, but hey, Im only one person and they seem to pack the house. Great experience, love the opportunity to listen to Jazz anytime. Go see it for yourself and make your own decision.$5 cover charge and well drinks or five bucks.
Even though the venue is small, it was great! The live band was amazing! The food can be a little better. My ribeye was super thin. Other than that, it was a good experience.
My friends and I called ahead to come to the restaurant, they did not let us know that it became 21+ after 9:00. He also failed to tell us about the $20 that we would have to pay. This would not have been an issue if he had told us on the phone. When we were headed in, the guy was extremely rude. If he was polite, he could have saved the place from getting this bad review.... but that’s not the case. Triggered me very badly.
Enjoyed a wonderful breakfast this morning. We were a party of 10 and the service was great! The very talented pianist played a large variety of music and took several requests from our group. We highly recommend The Phoenix!
Great music vocally and instrumentally, Of course friendly host and servers! The Majestic people directed me here a few min ago.
Stumbled in for a wild night of soulful jazz and blues with JLove.Great peach gimlet on the cocktail menu. The smashed potatoes need gravy but the whole experience was awesome so Im not gonna hold it against ya. ;)
I love The Phoenix! Its a great place for live local music. The food is grest; especially the biscuits and gravy and mimosas at brunch! Plus the manager and the staff are outstanding, they go out of their way to make your experience great!
Refreshing! My wife wants to go every week. Taylas music was phenomenal. Food is notable. Bailey, our hostess, left us wanting to come again. Well be back - several times.
Love the atmosphere of the Phoenix - service is always friendly and memorable, food and drinks hit the spot and the music is amazing. There have been nights Ive been blown away by how phenomenal the artists are. Regardless if youre a local or stopping through for a night, the Phoenix is a must.
It was getting late and night and my spouse and I decided to take a walk before going to bed and then found the Phoenix Jazz Club. Just a small bar with hardly enough room for the 6 piece band but an amazing atmosphere. So we stayed til closing time and will always remember our late night walk in Kansas City
Great intimate setting with decent drink menu. Entertainment was engaging and very enjoyable. Small food availability, but thats not why you visit a place like this.
Most recently we visited the Phoenix for their jazz happy hour on a Friday. LONNIE McFadden performed and blew us away. He certainly puts the happy in happy hour! Overall the drinks were great and the atmosphere was perfect for relaxing.
If you havent visited The Phoenix, do yourself a favor & make this a regular KC hangout. Its a quaint live jazz club that feels classic and comfortable, with unique food and drinks to boot. Happy hour is relaxing and festive, and Sat and Sun morning jazz brunch is a great experience for the whole family.
This is one of my favorite places to hang out. Im not much for the bar scene, but jazz bars are a different story. The Phoenix is the perfect blend of classy casual for a night out with some good live music.
Great place to hang out, but terribly understaffed.
I only stayed for a quick drink but the bartender was incredible! I enjoyed the best mojito I ever had! The ambiance was perfect for this Jazz bar. My only complaint was the price.
Wonderful atmosphere. Very friendly staff . The steaks were great. The live music was fun! Very enjoyable evening! First time in Kansas City and what a great place to visit.
Eh, we bought a Groupon so we had to use it. There was a cover to go inside, but it was so nice outside we just had drinks and a meal on the side patio area. Staff was okay, they seemed chill. Wanted to check it out because I read it was haunted. Dont think it was my scene. But dont knock it until you had a chance to experience it yourself.
Oh Wow! This place is the bomb. The singer tap danced on the tables. The french fries are great! Atmosphere is all you could imagine. Get there early, it gets crowded!
One of our favorites in K.C. Great atmosphere. I have been going to The Phoenix for probably 20+ years. Great place to get the night started if you are going out on the town. Good drinks and some great music to get the evening started. Good food as well.
This place is wonderful. Great food, amazing live music. This is a great place to take your special someone, or to come with a group and have a wonderful brunch, boozy or otherwise!
If youre interested in listening to a top notch, live blues/jazz band, The Phoenix is the place to go. The band we watched had a string bass, lead guitar, drummer and a young lady dressed in a full length black gown perched on the grand piano, singing in a sultry voice! They have a full bar with good quality liquor and a restaurant with a broad variety of finger foods and sandwichs.Seating is at tables and at a bar next to the band, up a couple of steps next to the alcohol bar and outside in the front and a couple of tables on the porch at the back. There was a $5- cover charge for each of us. Ive been to The Phoenix many times and its always packed!
I came here with my husband and a couple friends, I loved the ambiance and the friendly staff. My husband and I really disliked our breakfast hash and breakfast burrito. Our friends got sweet breakfasts though, and they loved it.
This is a nice downtown bar that is home to some great Jazz musicians. Lonnie McFadden performs most Fridays during happy hour, and he is truly one of the best entertainers in town. Youll ne amazed what a 70 something guy can do with a trumpet and some tap shoes. If you like Jazz... this is a good spot.
Only been there for lunch. Food is great, although it is not always fast so you might need to call ahead if youre picking up to go, but its worth it! Cheaper to buy the full wrap than using the pick 2 deal.
We went for Saturday brunch, service was a little slow. Building your own bloody mary was neat and the food was good. The jazz was a little loud for our liking but overall it was a very good experience.
Good food and great music and atmosphere. We went for brunch on a Saturday, it wasn’t that crowded and service was pretty slow. Took at least a half hour for the waitress to come take our order.
You cannot go wrong with the drinks and live music here!
Saturday brunch was great and the band was awesome. Wouldve like to have known that my Bloody Mary was getting the $2 Titos up-charge when I didnt ask for it..
Come get your lifetime achievement award.
This is a fun venue! My wife and I went for date night. The music was amazing and the food/drink prices were reasonable. I hope we get to visit again!
Great atmosphere, staff, food, and music. If you want a place that is layed back, where you can relax and enjoy live music, The Phoenix is it!!! You need to get there early, seats fill up quickly.
We absolutely LOVE the Phoenix. Music is amazing, pretty good food and drinks. Wait staff is fabulous. A must do if youre looking for something great in the KC area.
Stopped in for a drink, too early for any jazz. Waitress was great, we each had a couple drinks. Really need to go back for the music.
We had a wonderful time there! The food was wonderful, wait staff was fun and attentive, and the band(CC and the Remedy) was amazing! We are new groupies! We will definitely return again and again!!
First time going & well be back! So cozy and the music was great! My sister and I split the Mac. So so so good! Drinks were tasty too.
We went on Saturday night to hear Talya Groves. What a great performer in a nicely intimate bar. Very remeniscent of the great lounge act days. Come and enjoy.
I love the atmosphere of this club. The staff, food and drinks were amazing. I went here for a girls night out and had a blast. I would so recommend this club to those who are wanting to have a great night with out a clubby feel!!
Omg! Spent over three hours here and LOVED the band. Trumpet player came and sat with us and our server Tuesday was PHENOMENAL! Wish me and her were friends!!! Will definitely be back!!
I came here alone one night, there was a rock concert, a great vibe and people were extremely nice and welcoming. I ended up staying there until closing time and had a great night. I definitely recommend this bar for the music and the people!
Great live jazz music is performed here in a very unique setting. If you can, sit at the front bar, right in front of the musicians. These are the last seats to be filled, but if you actually want to watch the musicians, these are the best seats in the house...especially when Lonnie McFadden plays.
Great little jazz club. I only gave it 4 stars because it can be difficult to have a conversation over the volume of the music, but its hard to be upset about live jazz. Definitely check it out if youre looking for a genuine Kansas City experience.
Cola was phenomenal! Hands down made our experience amazing! I would definitely recommend checking this place out. And the live music is awesome!
My morning was blessed with amazing food from Phoenix with ol Brian and band playing some great, energetic/cool jazz, to start the day. Fresh coffee that was good to boot, marched with fantastic food and live tunes, cant pass The Phoenix up.
Like live jazzy music from iconic KC musicians? Like gorgeous glazed wooden bars with anything you could want to drink? Oh, food is great too, and served late. The Phoenix is a KC must visit if you are looking for hidden gems.
Get there early if you think itll be a busy night. The place is relatively small, so we ended up on the back patio instead of inside with the music. Still, the food and drinks we had were very good, and it seemed like a great atmosphere inside, based on the few minutes we spent in there.
Great music, great service and food is delicious. Great fun I like the Ambience. The downside is the front step. Just be careful.
Fun Friday evening location. There are Happy Hour drink specials for $5 and some apps at same price. Cover charge of $5 gets you Lonnie McFadden. Be there before 3:45 to be sure of a seat.
This was awesome. Great music and wonderful food. We had a great time with our friends from KC.
Great place to enjoy some great jazz music with a few cocktails and food. The Phoenix always brings in phenomenal solo artist and small ensembles; the house band on open mic nights is absolutely fabulous!!! This is definitely a hidden treasure in the Quality Hill District of Kansas City.
I can not undersell this place! This is exactly what I picture when I think of KC jazz! Its in a beautiful old bar next to an history Broadway Street district. The website has a very in-depth schedule for performances if youre looking for a specific artist.
The food is good, not great. The atmosphere is what makes this place special. Live music, not too loud, with attentive but not overbearing service, makes for a nice intimate setting.
The sliders were really good! Excellent cocktails, but best to come for happy hour. Live music was pretty good, some covers of indie classics.
Had such a wonderful time listening to the featured artist Lee Langston. He clearly had a crowd following based on the crowd participation. The fried chicken breast was FIRE!
Great live music. Everyone seems to get into the groove of whoever is performing. Great atmosphere. Great staff. Glad I dont live that close because I would be there all the time.
Stole my money.Doorman took a cover charge for two, then when I came out 45 seconds later to declare that there were no seats available, he refused to give my money back. Easier solution is to never go there in the first place. Would give zero stars if I could
It was a 5 Star night! The ambience was amazing and hats off to the chef for the delicious ribeye steak and cajun seasoned salmon. The entertaining J. Love Band was a assume finish to a wonderful night of celebration.
This place is a gem!My girlfriend and I pop in every once in a while, mainly for the chicken tenders. Best in all the land. Original is our go to.That is all.
A nice date night place to go, I noticed a lot of regulars but still welcoming, there’s not a bad seat in the house!
It must be the lunch service or something because I’ve been here many times on lunch break and service is consistently shoddy. Even if you’re the only people in there- it takes forever for the servers to get to you. One time the server dropped our plates off and didn’t return for another 20 minutes. Well after we were done eating and needed to pay because we were already looking at returning late. Ordering and eating a soup and a salad should never take more than an hour. This last experience takes the cake though. I ordered a bowl of soup and a side salad. Soup was brought me to cold- however that’s forgiveable. I also asked for vinegar and oil and what was brought to me was…oil. It was supposed to be a vinaigrette but there was no vinegar to it. I sent the soup back and asked for vinegar and the server brought me easily 1/3rd less than the original amount of soup back and then another container of the same dressing aka oil. It looked like oil, tasted like oil, it was nothing but oil. I asked for vinegar and she said sure and instead brings me another house vinaigrette and this one tastes like lemon oil. She states that perhaps it’s just too oily for my preference. I asked about vinegar again and she admitted she had no idea where it was kept. I was getting frustrated and asked for a different dressing altogether. I’m not sure if their vinaigrettes are just *really* gross or if my server didn’t pay attention in science class and doesn’t know that vinegar and oil separate therefore you need to shake them up before serving…..Either way, I hope their dinner service is better because lunch is always bad.
Great place to hear live jazz. Super friendly, efficient servers. Wonderful ambiance. Highly recommend Sundays Jazz Brunch.
