How did we not know this was here?! What a cool find! If you live in Brookside or Waldo or any of the surrounding areas give this place a shot! We enjoyed the gumbo and the burnt and sandwich. Don’t get the gumbo if you’re hungry though. Although delicious, it was a kinda chintzy. Tiny little bowl for the price…
BB’s Lawnside is an underrated KC BBQ restaurant.I enjoyed their pulled pork sandwich with skillet fries and cornbread. Great Sweet BBQ sauce. The cornbread was sweet. My only criticism is they don’t have their cornbread listed on their menu as a side item. I wouldn’t have know they served cornbread if I didn’t see it with the soups.Plenty of places to sit. I just prefer to go during lunch when they are not having bands playing.
I love listening to 101 The Fox on Sunday nights for their blues night. They often advertise for B.B.s Lawnside BBQ during that time, so we finally decided to go check it out. I dont know why it took us so long to do so, but were so glad we finally did!My entire family really liked it!! Even my children who are sensitive to loud places liked it!We sat on the deck, which was less stimulating for the kids. Its a great option for a special needs family to have. The food was simply AMAZING. When people talk about how great KC BBQ is, the same usual names get tossed around, but sadly, BBs doesnt get mentioned as much as it should. Im going to start bringing out of town friends here so they can spread the word, too.I highly, highly recommend this place! Its my new favorite! ❤️
Soooo...on Saturdays they have Jam Sessions where you can enjoy a live band. Came for the first time to see my friends perform and enjoy the food. Welllll, unfortunately the server, Victoria was EXTREMELY inattentive throughout the entire visit. I had to walk to the bar to get another drink as she continued to walk by to other tables. The bartender was kind and made sure she came by but she clearly had an attitude. This isnt a good thing for a first visit. Plus, my friends also said shes terrible when they got her before. Wow! Would have loved to enjoy more food but due to her lack of attentiveness, or concern, it wasnt possible. I did get to order some onion rings which were good, wanted to order something else but she never came back to check. I went on ahead and asked for my check when I was finally able to get her attention. Clearly, she wanted us to leave. I wrote her a note cause her service was awful! As Im leaving she FOLLOWS ME OUTSIDE! REALLY?! Asked if their was a problem with the service? For real?!? Girl!! I told her the deal she says no I didnt ignore you. Ummmm, sooo going to the bar to get your own drink is standard practice? Thought that was for people seated at the bar??? Aint no way Im ever, never going back here.
The BBQ was great, we however didnt care much for their sauces. We ordered a platter, cant remember the name, that feeds 2, and comes with 2 sides. Chicken wings and I added the burnt ends to the platter, OMG they were AMAZING!! Also if you prefer to sauce your own BBQ the platter came with sauce over the meat, just FYI. Overall great experience and will return!
Let me start off by saying they broke the unspoken cardinal bbq rule. *Never pre-sauce your product*. The meat should be able to stand on its own without sauce, makes you suspect when it comes pre-sauced… The ribs were poorly cooked (did NOT fall off the bone), brisket was thinly cut and bland. The burnt ends were not very ‘burnt’ and too chunky. I Recommend sides of beans and skillet fries. Table side BBQ sauces were really nothing special. Pricing to quality/quantity was average. Not the worst or best bbq I have had, just average. As always, Tell’em OuttaTownTony sent you via Google Reviews!
I have a customer close by whom likes it. I have an expense account so whatever. I had the brisket once and ribs once. Not terrible but I wouldnt spend my own money on it. If youre a KC history buff its a cool place. The boss of south KC owned the joint 70s / 80s when it was Austin City Limits. He had an office in back.
My only complaint is that I am unable to leave enough stars. I am actually writing this as I am sitting here still eating. I am enjoying what is probably the best BBQ of my life, and when I look around, I see happy faces, great service, and people head bobbing to the live music. The food alone is worth 5 stars. The service is 5 star as well. And the atmosphere is something that is nearly impossible to recreate. So the fact that I am only able to give them 5 stars is a shame. I live 4 hours away, but I will be back.
Forever grateful to the person who recommended this spot. If you like watching musicians who LOVE what they do and infectious energy, check out Mama Ray’s Jam Session on Saturdays from 2-5pm. The food is tasty, the drinks are good (not a giant selection but who needs it when you’re having so much fun, and the service is great once you catch one.
What a family, friendly atmosphere with fantastic food, people, and talented musicians! It was my first time and I cannot wait to go back! I enjoyed the burnt end Sammie with fries and Cole slaw and it was delish! I ate almost every bite 🤪 service was fantastic, wish I remembered her name! She had beautiful tattoos and was sooooo incredibly kind. 100 million percent recommended for an adventure time out with friends/ families /lovers!
It had been a while since I had been to B.B.s, so I was super excited to get out here again and bring my wife, who had never been. The place was exactly as I remembered it from 10 to 15 years ago, except the deck out front looked new and was enclosed with plastic walls and a roof for the winter. Greeted at the door by staff with a smile as it was held open for us. Open mic with a live band was playing, and the main room inside was packed, so we sat on the deck, which was warm and comfy thanks to the many heaters doing their job! Were quickly met by a waitress and a huge smile. Great service the entire time we were there. The BBQ also seemed to smell and taste just like I remembered and still very tasty! Brisket sliced thin, deli style for sandwiches was just fine on its own, and how I prefer to eat brisket. Sausage, ribs, and burnt ends were all good, with a few different sauces available if you wish. Baked beans are sweet and a little unique, and the huge potato wedge fries were hot, crispy and delicious. Tasty BBQ, beer and live blues with a crowd make for a fantastic time! Do yourself a favor and go visit B.B.s, one of Kansas Citys all-time classic BBQ joints.
My husband and I went on a Saturday evening. Multiple people were double parked in the lot, making several empty spaces unusable. The hostess at the door was impeccable- very friendly and informative. Seating in the patio was a bit awkward for a party of 2. There was a $7 cover charge per person, which seemed pricey. I had the mango margarita and the jalapeño infused tequila really kicked you right in the tonsils. I ordered the Big Walter sandwich, which is supposed to have multiple meats, but was just sausage and pulled pork with two small chunks of burnt ends and maybe a quarter sized amount of the sliced meat (turkey?). The meats were all cold when the food arrived. I got a side of green beans, which was $5 (sandwiches do not come with sides) and piping hot but, sadly, lacking salt. The BBQ sauces on table were watery and left to us to determine what they were. My husband got the burnt end dinner, which was bland. The pit beans were scorching hot and had an overpowering ginger taste. The huge breaded potato wedges were very starchy in the middle, like cold fries that have been reheated. The music wasnt too loud on the patio, which was nice. The waitress was professional and attentive.
Sat myself as instructed then waited for over 10 minutes to be acknowledged by staff while one stood idly scrolling on his phone and the other walked past me to go outside and smoke a cigarette and chat. Food was overpriced for quantity and quality. I ordered the burnt ends dinner. The meat was the only good thing and it was still mediocre. Skillet fries were flavorless and several of them burnt. Coleslaw also subpar and no flavor. Server sat in booth with me several times to share stories.
I got the BBQ nachos. Not pictured. 1 bowl of gumbo. They left my roll out. 1 burnt end meal. Bread pudding. Food was delicious. I loved the 3 different sauces they included. It was ready when I got there and they brought it out to me. All my life Ive grown up in KC and passed by this place. Even lived near here. Never tried it. I definitely will dine in for the experience.I love that they let me put my nachos together so they wouldnt be soggy. The bread pudding is the best in KC. That Bourbon sauce
Well start with the good. The BBQ sundae was amazing. I was a little disappointed it was served in a plastic cup instead of a mason jar (like advertised) and there wasnt a lot of pulled pork. The pulled pork sandwich was really good and so were the BBQ sauces. Kids chicken strips were huge and really good! As for the fries, they were dried out and barely warm by the time we got them...which was an hour to get our food. And ended up getting the wrong sides. Server was great and apologetic, but thats only half the experience. The musicians were amazing, but the music was WAY too loud. Side note. I wouldnt order a soda unless youre ready to pay FIVE dollars for one. 😳
A good local blues band was finishing their set when we arrived. We enjoyed the ribs and the brisket the best. The prices were good, and the food was amazing. If you love blues, barbecue, and/or Kansas City, this is the place to go.
Let’s start out by saying if I could give this place 100 stars I would! My friends and I came to Kansas City on a road trip and were blown away by the amazing food and hospitality of the staff here. Our waitress, Sheila, was incredibly kind and gave us recommendations on all of the food we needed to try at BB’s. We all split the king’s combo with the pulled pork, smoked sausage, and pork ribs that were all so tender and flavorful. Thanks to Sheila we discovered that the perfect combination was the mild BBQ sauce together with the peach habanero sauce. We found it really touching that the chef came out to talk with us while we ate. Sheila came to check on us often and when we were finished, she recommended us the fried bread pudding which is now easily one of my favorite desserts I’ve ever had. We packed all of the leftovers up because we didn’t want to waste a bite of any of the platter and even ate the leftovers again for dinner because we loved the food so much. I can’t thank the staff here enough for making us all feel at home and giving us the best Kansas City BBQ experience we could’ve asked for:)
This place has some of the best BBQ Kansas City has to offer. I was there during lunch which is before their live blues is playing, but I understand they have some of the best in the business.I had an off menu item, the grilled cheese and brisket sandwich. Loads of meat were falling out of this sandwich. The brisket was perfect, with great texture, moisture and flavor. Their sauce is made in house and is sweet and spicy without being too much of either.Portions are large, food is amazing, customer service was great and the price is nice.If you are in the area, make time for this restaurant, you wont be disappointed!
We had a large group, phoned ahead a few weeks earlier. There was a bit of a mixup with seating, but they eventually figured it all out and accommodated us all. Food was really good, and what you would expect from a place like this. Authentic, smoked deliciousness! The live music was great, but be warned- they play the blues LOUD and proud! Recommend sitting on the outside deck if you want to converse with your party at any length. Truly a unique local gem in Kansas City, I look forward to visiting again!
Ive been dying to go here for years and just never seemed to make it that far south. Finally, I was in the area and was able to pop in. I sampled a little bit of everything.Ribs - excellent, moist didnt need any sauce added to it.Sausage - great flavor and had a decent spicy kick to itTurkey - it had great flavor, but I wished it had been chunks of turkey rather than sliced.Burnt ends - these were huge and meaty, a little on the dry side. But they great flavor.Beans - hands down some of the best beans I have ever had, smokey, saucey, sweet, and a little kick of spice.Fries - these were so unique. They were like giant tater wedges that had a unique batter on them and fried.Onion rings - HUGE and crispyGumbo - out of all of that food, this was my absolute favorite (partly because Im allergic to shellfish, and this didnt have any in it 🥳)Highly recommend stopping in.
Is this the best BBQ in KC? Probably not. But, its still very good and the live blues/jazz are the best. Such a great atmosphere. Bring a date here gentleman. Shell love it. The people that give this place negative reviews are just unhappy people. The haters are just unhappy never satisfied people. If the girl says it sucks, then dump her
OK no judging but I had already eaten half my smoked Italian sausage sandwich & skillet fries by the time I realized I hadnt taken a pic of my food. Although the sandwich wasnt prepared the way I was expecting everything was still good. The hurricane that I ordered w/o a lot of liquor was a nice addition to my meal. But the fried bread pudding that I ordered to go was also amazing. My waitress was super nice & so were some of the other staff members that I encountered. Even ran into an old coworker there. Just an all around great evening there.
Ive been three times. The first was with friends as i has just moved to the area and I live nearby. Had the Bar-B-Q Sundae and had no complaints. The second time was with a business friend and we wanted to talk a bit, which we able to, until the band stated up.Kinda a hard to do when the band fires up, but hey its Blues and BBQ. Ordered the Brisket Chili and was impressed. What did not impress me was paying a cover fee that was unexpected for the 5 minutes we stayed after the band began and was unable to enjoy much music as we had to leave in order to talk. Again, Blues and BBQ so thats my fault. The server was the bartender an as it was very early afternoon, did a great job.On my recent experience, I ordered a pickup order and the service was great. The BBQ however was unacceptable. Ive never had tougher or drier brisket. The Turkey was not dry, but was a processed style of deli meat. Edible but not up to par with the competitors. Not even close.Unless having a cocktail while listening to the live music,Ill hit Q39, Meat Mitch or Jack Stack in the future.
We know the food is great from previous visits, but this time we couldnt get waited on. They were hosting a high-school reunion, so were super busy, but we sat for 30 minutes, asked multiple people, multiple times, if we could place our order. We were told that we were in the bartenders section, but the bartender wasnt there, there was no place else to sit. It was not a good way to treat anybody. We will probably go back again, next time were in town, but it was very disappointing. We left without ever getting to order, very disappointing.
Our first and last time here wish we would have gone somewhere else. Save yourself the time and headache i wish we would have. Sat down and atleast 3 servers passed us didnt even look our way or say hello. When we finally got service the bartender made my drink wrong and when she asked him to remake it he said no he would come talk to the table. The bald headed bartender decides to come over to our table and intimidate us and I say its fine no worries. Ive never had any issues like this before as normal people just remake the drink and move on. After seeing him yell at the girl I said you know what remake my drink. It was terrible with barley any alcohol and just tasted like mix. Fast forward to our meals. The burnt ends tasted like your grandmas pot roast. We asked the manager about it she said she would comp it but never did. We were just looking for some good blues and bbq but this place is terrible. Also dont try the wedges came out half done and tasted funny.
The food was great and the Saturday Open jam at 2:00 pm was fantastic. Really fun Blues music. Mama Ray(spelling?) was the best.
Found this place on our way through as a recommendation from some guys at Kissick Construction. We were greeted promptly by Liz. When we were ready to order her menu item advice was spot on with the BB Kings Combo. (Plenty of food for 2) All of the staff was friendly and the cooks definitely put in the effort and passion into the food. After the main meal Liz came by to offer dessert. Deep fried bread pudding. For those who have never had it, it is a must try. You will not be disappointed. Liz was very attentive and had a great attitude making for a great fun experience. Thank you Liz and cooks for a great first impression. Will definitely be back on our way through again.
I was here about 10 years ago or so and it was so good I had to bring my girlfriend back to try it. We drove from Minnesota for one night in KC to get bbq and those wings from BB’s Lawnside and it lived up to everything I remembered it being. My girlfriend still talks about the food especially the wings and the pit beans and we will be coming back every couple of years.
I parked and loved the dive look of this restaurant. I ran into the live band members on my way in, so I was excited for some live music with my BBQ. I told the bartender that it was my first time when I ordered my beer. He was fairly busy, but it take about 10 minutes for him to get my drink order. I was never offered water, not given even a chance to ask for it. I ordered jalapeño, cheddar sausage and pulled pork, with a side of pit beans and gumbo. Food came out in reasonable time. Portion size was generous, beer options were also plentiful and interesting. I found all of the food quite good, pulled pork was tender, sausage was tasty with a nice amount of heat. The gumbo was a drier style, but was very good, with a nice amount of meat. Beans were more sweet, but there was a good kick after the fact. Overall, the food was very good.Sadly, the bartender was inattentive and almost seemed like he didnt like me, for no apparent reason. I asked him about wifi and he said it would be a minute. That was understandable as he was still fairly busy. But after about 10 minutes, I asked another employee, who quickly got me what I asked for. When the food was dropped, the bartender again gave me no opportunity to ask for water and I had to get up and grab the BBQ sauces, instead of time bringing them to me. By the time he returned to check on how I was enjoying my food, I had had enough and asked for a to go box. I still had to ask for my check which took another 4, 5 minutes, even thiugh he was on his phone texting, at this point.Maybe he was just having a bad day, and with the very good food quality, I would still recommend this place. I would just say not to sit at the bar, so that you might get more attentive service!
Great food! Excellent service! Awesome atmosphere! Top shelf BBQ. Been all over KC and tried many. This spot is at the top of my list! Have the bloody mary!! Also some great gluten free options for my celiac son! Cant believe I havent come here sooner.
Amazing food. Live music and cold beer. What else do you need. Food is just amazing. I can only nit pick because I like skinny cut fries and they have thick, also I like fatty brisket and its lean here. 10/10 coming back. Double check the live music because there is a cover charge to eat when the band is here.
Great atmosphere and service. Got the brisket, burnt ends, ribs, and pulled pork. It was all quite dry. Wouldn’t splurge on the food again but would be back for the music and drinks! Pit beans were by far the best item on the menu
What amazing service! Very fast service, had my food within five minutes of ordering. Trevor is the best! They said the burnt ends were their best item on the menu, honestly though Ive had better burnt ends at a couple different local BBQ places. The beans were delicious and the fries were very good as well. But the bread pudding was the best bread pudding I have ever had in my life, the perfect combination of soft and chewy and melt in your mouth with raisins.
Had a blast on Saturday night. The band was amazing and the food was great. The pigs they got the ribs from must have been huge! They were amazing. I tried the Boudin balls which were excellent. My sides were the pit beans and potato salad. Rock solid potato salad. Just what you expect for potato salad. The beans were great. Firm and tasty. The ribs were great. They were tender but still stuck to the bone. Maybe a little too much pull for me, but they were filling.
The bread pudding was delicious, but pricey. My to-go order didnt take long to prepare, friendly service. Great atmosphere and I believe they have entertainment Friday night. The brisket was the best for me but I didnt care for the beans. Lots of parking and it looks like they can handle large groups. Sauce is sweet and tangy and a little thin/runny.
The real deal..deeelicious! Great folks! There during day so didnt get to hear any bands but am sure this would be the spot for barbecue and the Blues. Will be back next visit to KC!
We ordered chicken, 1 half datk 1 half white, ribs, and a pound of sliced brisket. Absolutely delicious! And prices were geeat! Especially when considering how everything has gone up, I would highly recommend doing taje out here!
Wonderful, finger licking good as always! We have been coming here a long time & cant get enough of the great food which you smell as soon as you arrive! We love the Cajun shack style building & vibe & the nightly live blues music is amazing! Perfect food & atmosphere to sit or dance a few hours & enjoy!
We are from out of town and had never been in before and I am glad we stopped. The Onion Rings and Louisiana Balls appetizers were fantastic. The burnt ends were some of the best BBQ I have ever had. I couldnt ask for anything better! The service was perfect. I would definitely come back here if we were ever around.
Loved the food and atmosphere. We were there Friday night. The only issue we had is we had to keep getting up and getting are own drinks the waitress was not great on checking on us
My wife and I were in town for the weekend and decided to try somewhere new. We were not disappointed!I tried The Big Walter sandwich which was various meats chopped up in a thin coating of sauce. Delicious. I had a side of potato salad and some chili (which was delicious when I tasted it, but was too full to eat it at that time). My wife had a pulled pork and brisket combo sandwich with a side of battered fries. Also tasty! We agreed this wasnt our favorite barbecue in the city, but it was really good and we will definitely be back.
Pulled pork sandwich was excellent. Nice beer selection. Saw live music on a Saturday and it was a wonderful time. Exactly what I love about BBQ - would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Pros:1) “Skillet Fries” were hot and tasty (mostly) and at a good price point ($2.75) for the quantity received2) The sliced brisket we were given was sliced super thin, which was interesting and a fun departure from normal. However, they might have just misunderstood what our request for “very lean meat” was3) Prices for mostly everything we’re about perfectCons:1) Barbeque sundae had somewhere between cold and room-temp meat - pretty much ruins the whole thing, and I recommend not getting it at all2) The building and parking lot were very run-down3) Service was a bit slow, though that’s probably due to the limited staff they seem to have4) Onion rings were tasty (especially the batter) but not worth the money (came out to over $1 per onion ring)
Took a visit to BBs today (6/20/23) and cannot understand how anyone does not rate this place 5 stars.First I will start with the service. Our waitress (for privacy I did not ask to disclose her name therefore I will not) greated us hello my people. She is a genuine southern gem. Makes you feel at home the moment you walk in. Because I was so enamored with the place a pit / kitchen tour was offered. Cant turn down a kitchen tour.Second the Food. We shared everything. We got a cup of gumbo, a cup of jambalaya, the ribs plate with burnt ends, pit beans, and battered fries. Let me tell you this place stacks up to any BBQ joint in America. That 60 year old pit puts out amazing flavors from the Burnt Ends Ribs, to the Pit Beans. Stop by and give them a try when youre in Kansas City to watch the Chiefs or Royals
Bringing great BBQ to hungry Kansas City blues music fans for over 30 years. Totally casual atmosphere and live music venue sure to please all the blues music fans within an ear shot! Easy to find with plenty of free parking. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my wife ordered the chips and cheese dip and our friends ordered the ribs and burnt ends. No complaints, really tasty bbq I belive has actually improved over the years. If you enjoy Blues and BBQ dont miss BBs Lawnside its a memorable place.
Have lived down the road a couple months but a Chicago visitor finally got us to stop in. We ordered the tacos, burnt ends, ribs, and the rib snack. It was ALL delicious. Especially loved the side of bbq beans. And it smelled so mindblowingly delectable my normally pristinely-behaved service dog kept popping up to see if he was ever going to get a taste. Bowie Approved! Thank you, Ashly!
I loves places with character. Even tho my family has lived in area since early 50s. Never been. It was like going back to the church you grew up in, a sense that things are the same, with people that give you a warm smile. And even had live music at 2p ! Waitress was a pro. You ordered what she wanted you to order. Not pushy, think Mom giving you medicine with a smile. This medicine was tasty for the soul. Ribs, sliced brisket, sausage, burnt ends. Like church there is always that uncomfortable moment- the sauce. I’m not a believer. Maybe its acquired taste, but KC is the sauce capital, ask my TX friends who think it’s blasphemy. Well this sauce boarders on back sliding with a weird spice. Anyone name it? Band was a added atmosphere and these players were KC blues tight. Great experience. Amen! Rib model pictured approved of ribs.
Fun Friday night for live music and barbecue! It was packed and loud (there were at least 3 birthday celebrations going on, plus KC Restaurant Week, so Im sure it was extra crazy) and had to squeeze in to find a seat, then wait on service because it was so busy — BUT everyone, from the staff at the door to the staff waiting tables to the fellow customers at our communal table were kind and welcoming.I was glad to have ear plugs to buffer the loud music and din of the crowd, but it was still hard to carry a conversation with folks at the table. It was a pretty full house, so I didnt venture from our table once we wedged into seats in the middle of the room. A few more daring souls managed to eek out dance floor space near the band. The BBs King Combo Platter for KCRW said it served 2-3, but I think we could have fed 4-5 after adding onion rings and bread pudding. We had pork ribs, smoked turkey, sliced sausage, burnt ends, green beans, skillet fries, and white bread—everything very tender and good with the sweet-spicy BBQ sauces. We boxed up leftovers for another meal!
My brother ate here a year ago and gave a positive review on the meatloaf. Its good. The spicy peach sauce is my favorite. The waitress says its jalepeno peach cuz haberneros got too expensive. Potato salad is very good!!! Slaw is very tasty vinegar and sugar and spice and everything nice! Love the atmosphere. Cool posters all over bathroom walls and good music. Cool covered patio deck area as well. Give it a try.
Good BBQ. Ordered the BBQ Sundae and Burnt end dinner. The Sunday was tasty, tender pulled pork with a lot of flavor. Creamy slaw and ok beans. The pickle was really good. The burnt ends had good flavor and enjoyed the crispy potatoes.Just not sure about the cleanliness? Looking around, chairs other items thrown in a corner. Men’s bathroom - not so clean. Makes me hesitant to eat here again. I realize the atmosphere is eclectic, nothing fancy, but feel surroundings, cleanliness are reflective of a kitchen.
Service very poor. Food not very good, and extremely expensive. We did not have drinks other than water. Bill for pork san dwich and half slab plus 2 small sides 40.00. Seven dollar cover charge for blues band so loud it hurt your ears. No way could you have a conversation or actually enjoy the band.
Had the fried shrimp w/an order of coated fries. For the price, the shrimp should have come w/fries. The shrimp was heavily coated and very greasy! The coated fries were just down right bad. Music Into the Gray, was good!
Great bbq spot. Service was great! I love the environment and mixture of bbq and blues/jazz! My only complaint is there was no music. I understand you can’t have live music all the time but even some good jazz/blues playing in the background would be better than silence:) just a friendly suggestion! Love the place and would recommend!
Not a bad location for some BBQ. They tend to have live music so that is either good or bad depending on what you are looking for. The portions are large so definitely bring your appetite. The different sauces that adorned the table were mild, spicy and a peach variety. The peach I didn’t care for but it seemed to be popular among other patrons. Overall a decent location that’s not your “chain” joints that are all over the city.
BbQ was excellent. Service had challenges but pulled it off (shift change caused). Hot day. The music venue was good.
My wife and I had lunch there yesterday. I dont know how this place gets such good reviews. First off, the sauce is God awful. It tastes like burnt tomato soup. Ive had barbecue all over the United States, and this is the worst sauce Ive ever had. The burnt ends were pre-sauced, should never pre-sauce your product. It should be delicious all on its own. The burn ends are not burnt ends, theyre chopped up roast. The brisket is sliced way for thin, so it dries out. The potatoes were okay. The baked beans tasted just like the sauce. Terrible. Better off going to Jack Stack. They have real burnt ends.
I ordered two sandwiches I I’m eating my sandwich my niece was eating hers and we found mold on her bread so I stop mid eating mine spit it out throw it I. The trash and called the place for the refund and said the can only refund the one with the mold on it even tho we both consumed the product they obviously don’t care about feeding customers molded food
Still terrific. New ownership (who worked for the previous owners for two decades) is keeping things tight and doing some really exciting new things. BIG new deck space with TVs and heaters. Garage style doors on the front that can roll up when the weathers nice. Sounds like theyll be bringing in some new music here and there. Food is still great - pulled pork and ribs are my faves, along with the gumbo and jambalaya. A Kansas City institution!
I finally ate here. It was delicious 🤤. I really enjoyed the food. I ordered a 1/2 chicken 1lb of turkey pit beans, green beans, deep fried potatoe wedges. Billy one of the owners helped me as soon as he saw me looking brand new. He answered all my questions and suggested I try all of the sauces. They have a band on Saturday afternoons and in the evenings. I’ve been living not too far but I’ve been wanting to try it. I was scared to. Being black and not really seeing very many black people didn’t know if I would be welcomed. I didn’t get racist vibes. I was going to stay after I got my food. But it always have to be that one bad apple. As I was getting my food I requested napkins and eating utensils. But the white girl with the perm and the glasses. Made me feel like she didn’t have to say thank you for the tip or for being a customer I asked for 2 packs of eating utensils. . So I said you are welcome and I asked why she didn’t say thank you, which she still never thanked me. She said I was going to give it to Billy. I said ok. I would have given more but her customer service really sucked. So I just gave the rest of the tip which was $5, to the band. So because of that I chose to leave. But one monkey doesn’t stop the show. Thanks Billy and I will be back and tell others about this great bbq of Kansas City. Thanks Candace. Secret Shopoer🥰
Food was outstanding and staff was amazing for our very large group! The only thing keeping me from 5 stars was the atmosphere of surrounding location...I couldve done without the strong diesel smells while eating.
I lived the smoked turkey this visit. Wedge fries are awesome. I tend to like a slightly sweeter BBQ sauce but BBs is delicious with lots of options and a fun atmosphere.
The atmosphere is awesome and reminds me of an old Juke joint in the south. Live music in a family environment is very cool. The food is questionable. I had the sausage platter on Sunday which looked like cut up hot dogs. On Monday I had a jalapeño griller hot dog from QT. IT WAS THE SAME FREAKING THING!!!! I think theyre serving already prepped out food and throwing it on the grill for smoke flavor. The pulled pork looked and tasted like Zarda from the grocery store. If youre looking for authentic BBQ this aint it. But if youre hungry, ready to get your drink on and get full, this place works just fine.
Great music...unique too, cant get at any other BBQ place. Loved outside porch. Food was great with many different selections.
Take out was fast. The ribs were a bit dry and not super tender. They come lightly sauced. The house hot sauce isnt super hot and has a good flavor. I would not recommend the BBQ sundae for take out because it doesnt travel well. Im sure its delightful in the mason jar, but the plastic container did not do it justice. The parking lot was rough.
Whenever we are in KC we try different BBQ restaurants; this makes the list as one we will definitely go back to. The hubs had the burnt ends (brisket) and I had rib tips. Two great dishes. Tender, flavorful, just the right amount of smoke. Small dine in area but did offer a covered outdoor space as well. We were there in a Saturday night around 5:30 pm. We didnt realize they were having live music that night. We were able to get seated fairly quickly before the crowd arrived for the show. The decor was interesting, several things to look at. Fun atmosphere.
The atmosphere is great. The right level of blues music playing. Very friendly staff. I definitely suggest the hickory smoked meat platter for first time visit because you can get a good sampling of the meats they provide and a couple of sides to boot. Battered fried and beans is good, but so are the skillet fries.
BBs Lawnside BBQ- Its OLD. lol They do have live music, but not sure how often. Maybe every night. A lot of blues memorabilia on the walls. Some tables along the wall but 2 long tables in the middle and you might have to sit next to someone what you dont know. Anyway. This is what we ordered. The BB King Combo With pulled pork and burnt ends. Best to last in order Burnt ends, pulled pork , Italian sausage then ribs. My son loved the sausage but he is a sausage person. I liked the pit beans. We also had the Irish nachos and the bread pudding. I really liked the skillet fries in the nachos. If i ate there again it would be burnt ends , pulled pork or the Irish Nachos. 3 sauces one was a peach or apricot and they other 2 were ok. PS Guy Fieri has been here. diners drive inns and dives. Its not a diner or drive inn.....Still debating if I would go back. Tough to say.BB’s King ComboFour Ribs, Italian Sausage and your choice of one meat – Brisket, Ham, Turkey, or Pulled Pork. Served with battered fries and Pit Beans. Add Burnt Ends for extra $$NEW: Irish BBQ NachosA generous platter of seasoned skillet fries layered with hickory smoked pulled pork, pit beans, chili cheese dip, sour cream and chives. Sub Brisket | Add jalapenosThe fried bread pudding was very good too.
My husband and I visited this spot after finding it online. It was amazing! It is hard to find a BBQ spot that not only has great flavor in their meats but the sides were just as good! I had the beef and brisket mixed meatloaf and the flavor was just awesome, not too overpowering with smoke and the seasoning was just right not too salty, the side were just as good. My husband had the burnt ends which were off the chain! Very juicy and again great flavor, the baked beans were oh my delish. The price was also fair, it was not an arm and a leg like some BBQ joints. I would definitely recommend this place and would return when we visit!!!
This place is a find!! A coworker and I were looking for a hole in the wall BBQ joint and this place seemed to fit the part. When we arrived we knew it was going to be good....This place is quaint and comfortable. Its not stuffy and polished like chain restaurants. And while the look is more relaxed than the big chains, that doesnt mean their food is..Their BBQ is spot on delicious. I ordered the Big Sweet. Lord have mercy that sandwich is good. Its pulled pork with sliced sausage and onion straws on top covered with their sweet heat peach BBQ sauce. The best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. I also chose the battered fries..... My coworker got the burnt tips sandwich with the baked beans and green beans. He said the burnt tips sandwich had the perfect amount of sauce and meat. He also raved about their green beans. There is a reason Guy Fieri liked this joint....trust me, you will love it.
This is a 5 star gem of Kansas City. Great bbq with multiple homemade sauces of varying spicy level. Although the spicy mango isn’t super spicy so try it. They have live music every night of the week. Some of the best local bands are regular contributors here. Always a good family friendly environment. Depending on the night and the band that is playing there can be a small cover to get in. Lots of KC history here. Jazz, blues and cover bands mostly.
BBs Lawnside catered an event I attended and the food was amazing! The dirty jambalaya was fantastic and the pulled pork and burnt ends were delicious. I highly recommend this place for any catering event!!
Best BBQ joint I have been to anywhere. Awesome place to hang out on a weekend night too. Awesome blues music, and excellent BBQ. When I get the chance to go back to the KC area again, I will for sure be stopping by. Had a blast, the staff was awesome and fun, and the atmosphere was the best. The pics were just a couple that I took. I had the burnt ends and ate some of my buddies ribs. They were all soooooo good!
I still love BBs Lawnside.HOWEVER, I sat down, perused the menu, and made my selection. No one came to take my order. I sat there, enjoying the loud music, andNO ONE CAME TO TAKE MY ORDER.I finally got up, went over to the waitress station, and inquired about ordering some food. A server told me she would have a waitress come to me in a minute.NO ONE CAME TO TAKE MY ORDER.Were they busy? Yes. The Saturday afternoon jam session was ending, and waitresses were watching to see who was ready to pay their bill.NO ONE CAME TO TAKE MY ORDER.After enough time passed, I left becauseNO ONE CAME TO TAKE MY ORDER.Regarding a different food establishment, my friend Kraig once said, Yknow, this would be a nice place to put a restaurant.
Got the Big Walters Mixed Meat sandwich to go. 6 meats smothered in sauce with some battered and deep fried potato wedges. The sandwich is physically incapable of being eaten without a fork, which is the only complaint I have about the sandwich.Being able to sample all the meats is such an excellent way to be introduced to a restaurant for the first time! Ill be getting the smoked sausage by itself sometime in the near future. Fries were a little starchy but very crispy on the outside. Hot BBQ sauce was used to dip them in, and I wish it was a little less thin, but flavor was overall good.Would love to stay and listen to some live music next time!
Wife and I ordered BBs King Combo. We took enough home for another two meals I think. We got brisket and added the burnt ends. The brisket was tender and moist. The burnt ends were, well, burnt with a nice bark. Really fatty though, which can be good or bad based on personal preference. Just eating one or two though it was perfect. The ribs were tender but not too tender to the point the meat fell off the bone. The sauce that came on it was...fruity. Thats what my wife said. She wasnt a fan of the peachy sweet sauce. I liked it though it was a little too sweet for me. Ask for some hot BBQ sauce on the side to spice things up. It packs the right amount of heat without burning afterwards. The atmosphere feels like youd expect for a joint with Lawnside in the name. It looks and feels like sitting in a closed deck set up for a big family picnic. Perfect.
The store is decorated very cute and has a rock a billy vibe. The waitress was very friendly, and she was on the ball about refilling drinks and checking in on us even with having several tables- I was very impressed by her. The menu has a great selection of bbq options to chose from and our food was out to the table fast! There wasn’t a band when I was there, but I saw a calendar in the bathroom that looks like there are bands most days which would only add to the experience!
Decent BBQ place. I had the burnt ends plate, it was pretty alright. Nothing special, meat was chunkier than i prefer and a little dry. Sides were alright, beans were a little Bushy for me, rather they have some smoke flavor. Prices competitive, but if youre going to spend it, there are much better burnt end places around. I heard their ribs were really good though, Ill try those next time. Just hard not to judge a KC BBQ place by their burnt ends.
Always great food, service & fun! Love all the live music! Especially Avey Grouws Band & Orphan Jon 😉🎶🎙🎸 See yall next time!
BBs is a KC legend.Staff is great. Food is fantastic. Music is perfect and fun and lovely.Gumbo yes!
My girlfriend and I ate here ~4 years ago on our road trip out west. We were surprised by the seat-yourself, picnic-style set up, but our servers were patient and helpful. Food was phenomenal, the blues music was a great vibe, our server was super cool, and the whole experience was incredibly memorable. Cleary since I am writing this review 4 years after that lunch haha.
The food was good, tasted how you would expect bbq to taste. The band was great and the atmosphere inside was nice. I would go back.
Ok food. Our server was terrible. Seemed annoyed to have to wait on us. Didnt write down our order (7 people in our party) and then had to come back and ask 3 of us exactly what we had ordered.
This is my favorite place to get BBQ in Kansas City. The atmosphere is great! The live music is great and lets not forget about the BBQ smoked in a 60+ year old smoker. And if you want to get your down south Louisiana fix they have great stuff on the menu for that too. If you dont try the catfish you are missing out.
Awesome little BBQ joint with a lot of history and character! It had been about 25 years since Id been there and it wont be that long again. Decided it was time for some good eats and when we stepped inside the KC blues staple Mama Ray was just getting ready to jam! What luck! 2PM every Saturday that happens, check it out! Just might see you there sometime 🎼😎🍻🔥🍖
Wanted to try a new BBQ joint. Its Louisiana style BBQ. This, apparently, means that its extra sweet. I enjoyed my ribs and potato wedges. Nothing really to complain about there. I did not like the beans, but this is a personal preference and not because they were made poorly. I do not like really sweet beans. If you like sweet, youll love them. I could tell that they were well prepared and seasoned.. Just not my style.I also had the Jalapeño margarita. It had a great flavor with a little smokiness, but I wish it had more of a spicy kick to it. I like spicy. They have live music in evenings, but did not get to be there for that. I think it would be a great time with good food. You should try the BBQ here, just know the style before you go. Im glad I had my experience with this style, but Im not necessarily keen to it. Again, its my preference and not a problem with the establishment.
Not sure of it was the time or the day but it was just ok bbq. I went there on a Friday lunch. The staff was nice and helpful but food was just ok and quantity wise smaller. I ordered Big Walters mix meat and it was not appealing nor taste as good as it sounds. Kansas City is known for its bbq so I guess things could be better. I will give it another try one of this days and update my review here.
I didnt like it at all. First of all, it was way too loud. I was excited for the bbq, but the jalapeno sausage and pulled pork were cold.Everyone was super nice, we just didnt care for the food.
Good music. Very loud. Casual dining. My food was terrible. I ordered the BBQ sundae and it was cold, mostly beans, and the meat was hard as jerky. My companions food orders came out good. Waitress couldn’t keep up with drink orders at our table but was friendly.
I was here for a graduation party. The live music was awesome. I had brisket, beans and coleslaw. The flavors are nice.
So I ordered the burnt end platter with beans. Not a fan of the burnt ends! Tough ,rubbery, fatty. Thats why I gave 2 stars. Maybe it would have been better in the establishment. But the beans 🫘 are a different story. Hands down best beans Ive ever eaten wow perfection ... ( 9) out of a 10 .
Always great, I come in every time I’m intown and am never disappointed! Even have to get sauce to bring back with me
Traveling cross country and stopped to eat here with family . The BBQ was delicious 😋 loads of flavor and various sauces . Staff was friendly good vibes and good eating .Your famous legends have visited B.Bs one and only B.B King , Elvis, Ike & Tina , Jame Brown and many more loved all the signatures and pictures on the wall I loved the food and the experience.
So much good music and history inside! If you love the blues and BBQ this is a must see!
The band was good. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The sausage was great!Thats where it ended. For a place featured on the food network, I expected more. The pulled pork, ham, beef, chicken, and potatoes were all a bit bland.Every place is entitled to a bad day. The service was great so i would be willing to give them another chance next time Im in the area.
Very disappointing. Had the BB’s King Combo. Brisket was awful. Dry, gray, tasted like it was a week old. Ribs and burnt ends were ok, definitely not worth the praise the other reviews gave. Only thing we enjoyed was the beans. Seemed like a cool place with good, friendly service. We were so excited to try it and left unsatisfied and disappointed.
Meat subpar sauce out of a bottle not great, coleslaw out of a 55-gallon drum from new york city bun soggy guy fieri dont know what bbq is so dont listen to him
I came here once several years ago and its still incredible! If youre in the KC area, make the drive! Its about 35-40 minutes away from KCI if youre staying in any of the hotels just outside the airport. The Louisiana Swampman Boudin Balls are essentially tiny arancini with a nice, spicy kick (not overwhelming if youre sensitive to spicy food!). The BBQ sundae is one of the dishes theyre known for, and its a mason jar bursting with beans, slaw, and pulled pork with a pickle slice. It looks terrible but tastes great and is one of their most popular items.Their burnt ends are out of this world. You get a heaping portion of perfectly-cooked brisket with their in-house baked beans and battered fries. If youve ever had wedge-style french fries, each fry is basically 1/8 of a potato thats been battered and deep-fried. They are heavenly.I honestly cant rave highly enough about the food here. I thought it was a well-known location but the staff at my hotel werent aware of it (granted, its 40 minutes away). You will absolutely not be disappointed, and if youre visiting the trip will bring you right through the heart of Kansas City, so you can walk off all those delicious calories you just inhaled.
Great food and music. If you want loud and music only, this is the place.
What a cool place! We came from out of town and happen to find this gem! Such delicious food
Been coming her her for 15+ years. Got to hear a lot of great musicians and my nephew for the first time. Great day!! Food and service was bomb as always 💕
Food was great wish I found this place in first day in town not the last day looks like cool place for music, food and drinksNext time
First I can not believe it took me so long to visit BBs this place is the real deal. The band we saw was first class and the food was very very good. This is Kansas City style BBQ so their sauce is on the sweet side and very good. Meat was not overly seasoned so get some extra sauce on the side, I had the Burnt Ends and my lady had the Smoked Catfish and it was AMAZING. The beans and coleslaw were really good the beans were sweet and had a unique spicy (not hot) flavor. I spent a lot of time just looking at all the concert posters on the walls. The owner is a long time booking agent for blues bands and has a Blues show on KCFX 101 FM. Its a busy place so get there early to get a seat on a weekend. Blues and BBQ, it doesnt get much better.
Made a stop on our way through town. The service was welcoming and made us feel like regulars. The food was great and affordable. The aspect that puts this restaurant over the top is the ambience and music. The posters and artwork all over walls are incredible. There was a live band playing while we were there, and they were incredibly talented.
Great let down. If you’re not from here they don’t want your business. We are visiting from Idaho. It just so happens we seen this place last night on the Triple D show. So we thought sure let’s check it out while we are here. They straight up ignored us. We sat down and waited for about 15 mins. Without so much as a hello. Watch 4 men come and sit at a table beside us. Got served beers instantly and orders taken. The server made eye contact with me and still walked away without even a “I will be right with you.” I wish I could say how the food was. But I’m guessing it would have been poor considering they didn’t want us there. Clearly they don’t want new business. And so I ask why be on the Triple D show if you don’t want to be put on the map. Don’t go here they don’t like newcomers. Seriously just such unnecessary rudeness.
They used to tell people that you had a choice to pay the cover charge for a band playing. Me and my girl just went in to eat real quick and left they charged me $20 extra for a band we didnt watch but 5 minutes. Then when I asked if I could get my money back they just straight-up said no. I used to love this place but it seems like the owner is doing shady stuff to pay for his upgrade. Not cool will never go back. And honestly the food is a hit or miss. Very disappointed.
Saturday afternoon at BBs what a pleasant surprise. My wife and I stopped by for some BBQ. We didnt know we would be in for a musical treat too.First things first, the food was delicious. We had a combo plate with breaded steak fries that tickled our tastebuds. Spicy Italian sausage, tender ribs, pulled pork, burnt ends, Cole slaw baked beans all washed down with some KCBier Dunkle. Way more than the sandwich we thought about when we started out! Then the band fired up. It turns out Saturday afternoon is jam session time. Audience participation is encouraged and appreciated. What started out as a quick bite to eat turned into an afternoon of music food and drink. What a fun time.
If you like no hostess and wondering where you should sit, not knowing who your waitress is and asking, mediocre, warm (not hot)BBQ, eating off of paper plates, then this joint is for you! One and done.
Okay, so theres BBQ galore in KC, and then theres spots like this... OG cult-like following spots, with phenomenal food, a quick and inexpensive bar, and consistently great music and atmosphere. In the spring/summer/fall in good weather, few places compete with sitting outside and soaking in the vibes.
Fun little BBQ joint on south side of KC. Met some friends here while traveling through Kansas City for BBQ and Blues. Very fun time sitting outside (bring your lawn chair) and enjoying the music. First time for us here and had a combo platter with Brisket and burnt ends. Everything was very delicious.
I love this place, the atmosphere and people are great. Really a Kansas City gem. However, they need to level up their food game, the food is poor, I had the sausage, brisket and beans and I swear the sausages were undercooked Johnsonvilles from the grocery store, the brisket was kinda just bland and not very good. Please upgrade the menu and ingredients as I really love this place.
We have come here on barbecue tours and they treat us wonderfully! Amazing food, some of the best staff and just a good time the three times we’ve been there. We are confident to bring our out of towners just bc of the consistent great food and service! Thanks BB’s! Miss Shawna is the best, we love her!
Server was extremely short with me but the food is good loved the beans and sliced beef also good music.
Great food, awesome live music, and excellent staff! Great place to stop for a show and BBQ!
Came here for my 22nd birthday and they carded me when my license was expired. Secondly they were packed full and they just didn’t have good customer service.
First time & had a great time! Two of our group had bbq: ribs, sausage, & brisket. Everything was very tasty, however they serve their brisket thinly sliced. Peach bbq sauce was great! Last member of our group had the Cajun sundae ( layers of gumbo, red bean & rice, & jambalaya) which was just blah. No spice or flavor…& missing shrimp. Sunday night music was very good & our server was excellent. Would come back!
Came from New York to see the Amanda Fish Band. BB’s is the coolest venue and the food was FANTASTIC!! Great friendly service too. Amanda Fish was AMAZING!!! Had a BLAST! I arrived early and they had live music from 2-5pm. Mama Ray, Tina and gang. They were all simply amazing!! It was a great time at a great place!!!!
Just didnt taste like real smoked BBQ, service was excellent atmosphere was good
The food was great, the beans are amazing. Hope to stay for music next time
I usually really love the food and music at this place. Unfortunately this trip was not the best. The ribs were fatty and the beans were playing. No wonderful tidbits of burnt brisket and meats in with the beans. I had been looking forward to the young ladies performance but the Acoustics were not working correctly. Then after changing to some different amps we couldnt hear her. I hope that they can fix all these problems because of course I will be back.
BBs Lawnside is one of the BEST BBQ restaurants in KC! Featured in Diners Drive INs and Dives, on Anthony Bourdain and many more Foodie TV shows for their excellent KC style barbecue and incredible Blues Bar atmosphere. Great menu and Great catering and great people. Many great nights and great memories with this place inside the restaurant, on the deck, and and at CHIEFS Games Tailgating at Arrowhead! Highly recommended this as a TOP SPOT on any KC BBQ tour. Get a BBQ Sundae!
Great food and service for lunch. The special was special.
I love the live music. The BBQ is good. Nice size servings, and tasty.
I’ve driven past this place atleast a thousand times and never stopped....well I finally stopped. This puts gates, Arthur Bryant’s and Joes KC to shame. Food was excellent and the server Tyler I think his name was, was cool as hell. Definitely recommend this to anyone who’s on the fence. Here’s a secret ask for their competition BBQ sauce...excellent
Delightful! We happened upon this place and boy were we lucky!! It appeared that many of the people were locals that frequented there regularly. Some of the best bread pudding Ive ever had! Great atmosphere, great food! Go there!!
One of my favorite places in KC. Great service, barbecue, and blues!
Food was good enough. But don’t be fooled. Walked in, told to take any seat, eat my food. And bill comes with a $5 cover charge for every person at the table. $25 total?!? NEVER was I told this would occur. We would have gotten our food to go. The “band” was taking a break 80% of the time we were there.Underhanded and not how good business is done.
This place was fantastic. After my brothers funeral we had a dinner there the hostess working door was absolutely amazing. There was a live band. All of our waitresses were outstanding. Every time they brought out food it was hot . We had about 50 people with us and then there other customers and let me tell you the wait time for our food was very short. I was so impressed with as full as this place was the service was fast hot and just amazing. I cannot say nothing bad. WAY TO GO!#
