Every burger comes with a side of pride and history. Love this place. 🫶. So glad it’s been a slate-wart(hate that word). The drinks are good. Reasonably priced (all things relative) and they make a mean burger. If you go at prime time it will be packed so place ur food order early! And try and belly up at the bar. That is where you get to see all the action take place
They attend you quickly, it is an ancient gay bar, this bar has his history. The hamburguer and the chef was good, like really good, I take out the onion because it is not cooked, but the hamburguer and the natural fries are good. They charge you for the pickles 😅 take a note for that. The gay beer was refreshing and neat. I recommend it.You found locals from the area and pretty handsome people around.I would love to come back.
This place I guess is the oldest gay bar in New York City. Unfortunately, they are taking advantage of that and the drink prices are outrageous. My husband and I stopped in on vacation and ordered a Titos soda and a Captain/diet and it was $24 or 28 just for two drinks!! The food is actually pretty cheap and tastes really good and they hand cut all of their french fries so that part was great but the drink prices are ridiculous. We went to a couple other gay bars, including Gym bar and Ty’s bar and the drink prices were less than half what they were at Julius’.
A bit crowded - we had to wait a bit to be sitted - I guess its linked to their success. Because the place is great 👍 We had the best time, for our first time in a NY gay bar. The bartenders (both) were the Nicest!!! So friendly, funny and helpful (thanks again for that, guys!) Burgers and fries are delicious 😉
I can no longer recommend this place for burgers. It costs $22 for a bacon cheeseburger and fries — that’s ridiculous! It’s not even that good anymore like it used to be. The fries aren’t seasoned. Neither is the burger. The service isn’t great either. The only thing this place has going for it is the atmosphere.
I went here for a visit as I was told my a friend that they have the most under rated and in her opinion, the best burgers in New York. Naturally I had to give it a shot.I was served by an elderly gentleman, who was ok but perhaps needs to work on his customer service skills if hes going to be the face of the food at Julius.I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings. The thing I always look for in a burger is meat quality. In this case I wasnt asked how I wanted it cooked, so naturally I was weary. The came cooked well done with a thick enough patty. The meat quality wasnt bad but fairly average for something that has been labeled the best burger in town, which many of the reviews emphasize. But being completely honest I was let down because of my expectations, but still found it quite satisfying. It was just a simple mouthful. No frills, no thrills, just a good burger. Regular bun, no brioche, no pretzel. But at the same time the combination of the raw onion and lettice with the cheese, bacon and burger together was still great and difficult to get nowadays with places constantly trying to elevate burgers. The onion rings were really good but a bit greasy. They combined well with the array of sauces they had to offer, particularly the honey mustard.Perhaps 3 stars is harsh but Ive taken all into account. I can definitely see how they may be more appealing after a few beers but unfortunately I didnt have the assistance of alcohol behind my judgment on this occassion.
Great local gay bar with friendly service. The food is exceptional. Go there for a quick beer and burger.
My favorite gay bar in the city for a mellow vibe. The food is always great, the drinks are reasonably priced, and there’s always at least a few hotties. The music is usually a good sound, it’s a chill place I love it.
Hot take this is the weakest pour in the west village. Please charge $17 for a casamigos and soda and $9 for a Corona but also be cash only in 2024. You can do better.
Fabulous ,cool and Retro . Arrived with friends on vacation love the Cosmos and Alabama Slammers. Pride NYC
THE neighborhood gay bar in the village. An institution. Strong drinks, good food ($12 bacon cheeseburger? Yum for a bar burger!), and good crowd. Some of the bartenders need a little flagging down from their phones, but… eh. Go-to west village gay bar 👍
I didnt know about the historic significance when I visited and I wasnt there long however, I like the way it felt. It felt like a place with a lot of stories and quite a lot of character. I loved the fact that they have a little grill up in the front and it smells delicious 🤤😋 If I wasnt headed to dinner with the friends I met there I would have suggested we stay and have something to eat. The thing is it was very crowded especially for Wednesday night. Next time Id like to just sit relax and have a drink and soak it all in. This would be a perfect place for medium to visit. It was oozing with psychic energy
Fantastic local gay bar with so much history. Servers are really friendly and the drinks are averagely priced for the area. Has a small kitchen within the bar so sometimes it does smell of fried/grilled food! 🍔
Great atmosphere unbelievably friendly people.Food was delicious.Martinis are spectacular
Its the best bar burger in the city. The fries are fresh cut, the onion rings are crispy, and the service is nice. It sounds like Im reviewing a restaurant and not one of the oldest gay bars in the country, but I really do make the trip down to the West Village because I want a burger and cheap drinks with my friends.
Idk why my parents are disappointed in me to go here chat am i cooked
This is a great historic gay bar, unpretentious and friendly. They have a concession in the bar that makes fries and burgers which are good but also infuses the air and your clothes a bit with grease. But quite yummy fresh carbs when you’re drinking.
Best bar burger in the oldest NYC Gay bar...Cash only so dont be a problem about it bring cash or use their ATM
Ive been here before with my IDNYC. TWICE. But today they said that they are not gonna let me in with it, even though I have proof of my age on it. Who even takes a passport to get in? Employees were rude, and they didnt even listen. How is it possible that I used to be able to go inside with this document and now I cant?
1 St time visiting this bar, it was packed with very easy to talk to people. Fun crowd that was happy and not pretentious. The drinks were well priced. They have a kitchen that serves fried & grilled food, no reason to leave. They have a mini dance floor and plenty of back sitting area. Bathroom is clean. Would revisit again.
Pretty bad service, not polite bartenders.
The BEST neighborhood bar in all of NYC.A destination for sure. You won’t find friendlier people, great drinks at incredible prices, and THE BEST BURGER and Fries anywhere. This place is NY at its best and has been for decades. Regulars and visitors are all made to feel like family.JUST GO....NOW!!!!
POSSIBLY HAS BED BUGS!! I found a bed bug here last night. I gave it to our server and they said they’d “clean”. We tried to bring it up again, and all the staff and manager were extremely rude to me and my friend, whose birthday it was. They gaslit me, saying “there are no bugs here” when I literally found one and put it on a napkin. I don’t know if there are bed bugs there or the bug came from somewhere else, but definitely very concerning for all the staff to have such a knee-jerk defensive reaction to discredit me and act like what I saw wasn’t there. I had previously had very positive experiences at this bar. I am a queer woman, not a gay man, but I had seen Julius as a safe space for all queer identities and felt that. Now I feel differently. Emotional manipulation is not okay with me, and I feel that I was treated differently as a queer woman, that the staff saw it as easier to patronize me since I’m not their main clientele and also was relatively quiet and not making a scene over finding the bug. it’s extremely upsetting to have had this experience in a place I used to think highly of. Also, they seriously might have bed bugs so watch out.
Came in from Denver and staff let me know they were not open for 15 minutes at 3:45 (open now on Friday at 4:00pm on 4/1/22) and thanked me to leave the premises while it started raining/windy. So glad i contributed during the pandemic to keep this establishment open to a staff that can’t even host visitors for 15 minutes during bad weather. I guess the business is doing so well it’s not worth just welcoming patrons in and ask them to wait a few minutes while they get ready .. at least they were polite.
Great place. Takes me back to the early 70s. I will never forget Happy the bartender. Peace my old friend. Those where the days. The bar is wonderful as it was back in the day. Thank you Lutz Family & Helen for keep the bar a warm and welcoming place. We need more folks like you.
My favorite dive that happens to also serve one of the best burgers in all of NYC.
I was really happy to go to a historic gay bar in nyc. This place was talked up and I was let down. The burgers arent that good. And they nickel and dime you on every single topping. Theres no menu so you have no actual idea of how much youre spending when you order anything. Not worth the money. Go to stonewall instead.
Delicious and affordable bar food! Legacies of queer resistance! Kind bar staff! This place has it all!
Bartender was super friendly yesterday at about 530pm. Happy hour was on, had a Gay beer and went on my way of exploring. This was my favorite bar out of the 4 I went to. :) atmosphere, friendliness, pricing all on point.
Slightly divey in style, friendly bartenders that remember me and always greet me. Grill serving burgers, fries, etc.: wonderful for a snack or cheap meal. Drinks are well prepared and least expensive in the city. And the crowd is usually friendly to strangers. Go there and meet new people
With $6 drinks during happy hour I have no complaints! Great food, friendly staff and quite the interesting crowd.Plus the bar scenes from Pose on FX was shot there but I promise you they aren’t that cruel in real life. Everyone is welcomed.
Ive been coming here since I first visited NY, and first came out, and I dont think Ill stop til they drag me out. Had my first date with my boyfriend there, and then many more after that. Secretly the best cheeseburger for the money in town. You will smell like fried food, and thats wonderful.
Never been to this place. Its a cute place to hang the crowd is inviting and the service is amazing. My friends said I had to get the wings. And let me tell you they are so AMAZING. Wow. So we ordered more and then other items and to my surprise again all wr ordered was GREAT. Do they do take out??? Yummmm
First time Ive been there was with a friend who told the the story of this amazing landmark. So, I was in love with it and so far thats my piece of ground in NYC , along with three more bars. The nicest bartenders in West Village, the best hamburger and the smartest guys in town , in case you are about to engaging in a healthy conversation .
Great place and great food, and beautiful t shirts
That security guard old man with dark skin who ask customers for their I.D at the front entrance door rudely & aggressively put his fingers on my arm & my sweater before telling me that I need to show my I.D. It almost like hes holding me back or pushing me back from entering. Before that, I was standing & walk slowly! Then the guy rudely & aggressively put his fingers on me. I was about to show him my I.D at first but I quickly change my mind & leave without saying anything because of his attitude! I was also hurt too. That is so disrespectful from him & I felt disgusted by him. Terrible customer service! Not only that but also his attitude too! He should get fired for aggressively putting his fingers on me before letting me know that I need to show my I.D! Unacceptable! Definitely not coming back!
Extremely friendly. Every visit we ended up meeting people. And one of only two gay bars in NY, of about 8 we visited, that has any sort of decent beer on tap. Whats up with that? (The other was 9th Ave Saloon.)
4 stars for the dj on Saturday day, he was great and commented.Drinks are so weak. Didn’t try the food.Decor is cute, people are friendly.P.S. It is FULL of bigger older white man.
It may be one of the oldest places but it’s the worst place in town when it comes to customer service. One bartender is clueless & the other one has such a bad attitude as if he doesn’t want any customers there.
7 years in manhattan and STILL this place constantly nails it. Im bartender myself, and I know what Im looking for when I visit a dive, and Nick treated me well and the chef on hand I think his name was Josh? Made the best burger. Thanks for brightening me day. JULIUS RAWKS
Excellent cheeseburgers and fries at reasonable prices. Happy hour at 4:00 and most of the bartenders have a generous hand. Juliuss is billed as the oldest gay bar in NYC and I have no problem hanging out there. However, if you are the least bit homophobic, go get your burgers at McDonalds
My favorite NYC bar since late 60s. Bartenders can be great or attitudes...pending on the gossip they accept or their busy day...but you overlook it for the mingling relaxation. History, yes. Winter is a bit stiff ling inside with the fry grease as the kitchen is in the midst of the bar. But that is part of its charm Cheap eats to go with drinks. A favorite if a friend wants to meet up. For mingling...it is a tight tunnel..hard to negotiate. It is the place to go !
Historic speak easy where Kinsey would set up table to interview the gays. One of the best bar burgers in NYC and now owned by a Greek woman! 4* out of 5* because you will smell like food if grill is on.
Great bar and historic, bartenders are cool and I love Thursday when they have special events... Plus! Those Burgers!! Delicious and affordable and the fries!!! You have to get the experience of this historical place in the West Village!
Went on Halloween night and it was PACKED! We were hesitant to go in but glad we pushed our way through. This place did not disappoint. Drinks were average priced but the company and conversation is what made us stay. Bartender was attentive.
No cozy bar. Hispanic bartender although I ordered my drink in Spanish, answered me in English ( speaks up in Spanish with his bar partner) arrogant!
Been here many times. Lots of locals and full of characters! Happy hour, jukebox, food available and tables on the front and back. History on the walls as well as older patrons telling stories. Fun place!
I do love this place. Excellent quality drinks and great DTE clientele. The old timers coming to this dive bar can give great conversation, so make sure you sit up front and be open to random chit-chat. Very entertaining indeed!
Oldest continuously open gay bar in town? Inexpensive drinks, friendly crowd with a wide age range. Afternoon bar tender remembers me every time even if I have not been there in a while.
My husband and I had our reception here. If you know what it is from the start, a perfect dive bar rich in history for the LGBTQ community, you get exactly that. Pub food, photos and flyers all over depicting the history of the space, and tons of regulars, many of whom experienced much of the oppression the establishment experienced.
Lively gay bar with a friendly vibe. The clientele skews mature but always a nice mix of people. Great happy hour specials and a grill for all your drunken food cravings.
Rarely have I been to a bar where the team spreads such a friendly atmosphere. And an extra praise to the supercute chef who made us happy with his yummy food. Well be back.
Like home. Been going here since latec 0s..yes underaged! As a long tunnel style bar..hard to circulate. Historic. Good drinks. Inexpensive food cooked in front of you. A top choice always.
Cheap drinks in an otherwise expensive neighborhood. Its an older crowd gay bar, but very friendly. Non-scene, kind of divey. Thats what I like, plus the LGBT history. They serve bar food too!
One of the great old gay bars. There is every type of person here and its very low key. Everyone always seems nice. Make sure you get a hot dog if you are drinking as they are amazing.
Great burgers & longest HH ever. 4-10. Sweet bartender. Was there w my husband. Enjoyed learning the history. Had a great time here for our first time in New York
Fun, cozy, historic gay bar with a fun, bustling vibe. It closes earlier than wed like or expect on weeknights, but its worth visiting while its open.
Julius bar is a jewel. A hark back to a gay world that has disappeared otherwise. Hole in the wall, lacking in any pretense to chic, and friendliest bar in town. The bargain basement burgers are perfect for the environment. Not a first date bar, unless youre in your 50s, or youre a twenty-something couple with a feel for nostalgia. If you dont know the password for the Monsters cover-charge night, Julius is the next best bet, and even possibly a primary go-to.
One must go to Julius once in their life. It’s quintessential of NYC past and you will meet the most interesting characters. They have a great party once a month that attract a diverse and artsy crowd, including celebrities
Diversified neighborhood crowd along with out-of-towners of all ages. Great bar menu with exceptional burgers. Good jukebox. The staff is exceptional.
One of the best gay bars in NYC; its also one is the oldest continually operating bars. Hang with a drink, or take advantage of the fry kitchen if you need some grease to soak up the booze.
Quirky neighborhood bar. Historic in its nature, an important point in the history of the gay rights movement in New York. Its comfortable, casual, the bartenders are friendly and they have great drinks and bar food.
There on a Friday thick and thin bartenders. Thin guy never stopped movingtook care of the whole bar. Thick guy just stood behind the bar back against the wall watching. Thanks to thin guys hustle drinks were plentiful.
One of the greatest gay bars in New York City happens to also be the longest running one. One could lyric poetry about the stories and fun nights had here. The sense of history is only magnified by the fact that it features heavily in Melissa McCarthys latest movie Will you ever forgive me where she is seen having a rather believable tete-a-tete with Richard E. Grant in the window. The E one can only presume is for extraordinary. This bar is a stalwart champion of rebellious and lively homosexuality. Thanks to encounters in this bar, when Im ancient and gray.. I know Ill look back on my life and fondly smile - knowing that I lived a corruscating and full life.
I organized a queer networking happy hour with about 20 people in attendance, and Helen took great care of us. Thank you!
Julius is one of the those fantastic time-travelling places. Not only will you enter a piece of history, but you will feel cosy and welcomed. Try the burger while ordering your gin and tonic.
Oldest official Gay Bar in the West Village of New York. Low key & very friendly West Village crowd. Bar is maintained in its original 1973 look. Friendly
Best burgers & jukebox in town! And the man behind the grill is Stellar!! :D We go once a month in a gang of at least a dozen just for him!! ;) Hope 2 cu there! :)
I loved this place. Nice atmosphere. Food is good. Waiters were awesome and fast. No complains AT ALL! ♥️
There is a reason they are still in business. No attitude, grab a delicious burger, something great is always on the TV, and jukebox full of delights. If only they would accept a credit card!!!
Foreigners allowed in with a driving license on one night but not the other, guy on the door the second night was pretty rude. Who carries their passport on a night out?
One of my favorite bar in NYC :)Very strict with ID. (Take it with you)
Terrific bar. Is a typical newyorker for having a drink or a shot. Reasonable prices an generous glasses.Ideal for everyone, and special if you are looking for ambient
History? Check. Customer service? Nope. One should not be forced to pay an ATM fee to order food in your establishment. Its 2018 and youre using an iPad-based payment system- drink and food orders can be combined. Figure it out.
Visited this bar a week ago with a friend, and it was a cool experience. A little packed, food was ok. Great pricing on drinks. Nice chill spot
Level of music was perfect for talking. Drinks were affordable. Cozy, divey, but not sticky. Overall a really fun experience.
Fun neighborhood bar with really good hamburgers. I have only been there a few times but the bartender was extremely friendly.
Amazing bar. Fantastic herstory. Such a range of people young to old. Laid back atmosphere. Cash only! A part of nyc gay history. A must for first timers!
Great, bar great hype. The oldest LGBT bar in the village, it was a lot of fun. And the open kitchen is great when you get hungry in the late hours.
Old and quaint historic bar! With flg great burgers! I live for this historic LGBTQ establishment! The bartenders are great! The aura of the place is fantastic!
Great, historic, NYC bar that has not been messed with. Great burgers and fries. Very reasonable drink prices.
Good vibes. Not pretentious. Friendly staff. Killer burger & fries. 👌🏻🏳️🌈
Living for Disco-very nights! Kyle is the king. His is the only music that makes me dance.
Great historical gay bar in Manhattan. You can feel the history there. Also, delicious pub food from the tiny kitchen.
Live this place. The oldest gay bar in the village. Lots of history. Good diner food. Gets busy early usually. Only cash.
This historic gay bar is definitely worth it if youre, ya know, 💁 When we went, it was a little crowded and our drinks werent the best, but overall it was a good experience
An old standby that has weathered the years. It was a crazy place when i first went in the 1960s. More subdued now, but still a welcoming place.
A legendary place. Drinks are inexpensive compared to whats around. Some interesting older guys - and they remember. The though times. When nothing was right. So - go.
I went to Julius for a friends birthday, and its a tiny and awesome bar. A classic with the Village gay bar scene. Has a bit of a Cheers vibe.
An extremely welcoming place, with rich drinks, great food and the friendliest bartenders! Thank you for the great vibe!
Just stopped in tonight 2/2 for a burger and a beer...still fun...still a good burger...just go to a corner to eat your food since some patrons wil grab what they can from your plate rather than get their own given that its an older crowd on limited income in many cases it seems.
Great gay bar! This place has history and greasy, delicious burgers. Meet a friend here in the West Village for some drinks and food.
Wonderful! The prices are phenomenal very cheap and the food is great and the people are nice and the staff are great. I have stepped in to history and be part of gay history.
While the burgers are not as great as they used to be the prices for food and drinks keeps me coming back. Some of the chefs could use attitude adjustments.
Great bar nice people..Also they make a excellent burger and fries...Rainbow
Pretty cool gay bar with old photos from decades ago. The beer is pricey at $7 a bottle and the bar tender was slightly rude, but he may have been busy.
Great, historic place with nice people and cold beer. Old school gay. Not fancy, but durable...much like myself.
Historic NYC bar used to be a quiet working class drinkers paradise where you could talk to old friends and meet new ones, although, these days infiltrated by a younger crowd and the problems and benefits that brings.
It was a Christmas celebration. Julius had a great dinner for the holiday. Hard to tell if the meal or desserts were best.
An amazing and very relaxed place with super friendly staff! Also had really good snacks.
Cash only bar. One of the oldest gay bars in the city. Everyone is nice and ready to help.
Very comfortable come as you are gay bar. A Greenwich Village mainstay since the time before Gay. Please mark this helpful if you found it to be so.
Always nice and friendly crowd, musicSelection was great and bartenders were fast and nice. Love this place
This is Mia one of the employees wife..which my husband has passed on..he worked there for almost 3 years..I will say this is a great place.well respected and they treat u with respect..Im So glad they allowed us to be a part of their family..I love you all..Helen you are the best..and I thank you for everything.
Super chill, fun, no-attitude place for a drink. Young and older gay/gay-friendly NYers mingling for a nice time.
Burgers r great n u get to chill. If u r homophobic stay far away. My go to place to relax n have a beer.
Possibly the oldest bar in the city, DEFINITLEY the oldest gay bar in the city, and undeniably THE best burgers in the state at one-third the price of all the other best burgers in NYC
Nice place to kick off a night out or for a burger and fries and drinks on a Sunday afternoon. Quite a mixed crowd of young and old.
I guess inflation is here - I couldn’t believe it - I ordered a Dewars rusty nail in the smallest tumbler I have ever seen filled with ice - $14 - that’s ridiculous
Bloody Mary mornings with a burger on the side... pull up a barstool and meet some amazing people - a NASA engineer, legendary artists, et al.
Great local bar. GREAT HAMBURGERS. Friendly employees and locals. Happy hour is 2 for 1.
Great bar for cheap happy hour drinks and good bar food. $4 well drinks during happy hour, with a strong pour.
The classic NYC dive bar meets friendly gay bar. Welcoming crowd with a happy hour to keep them fueled.
Best Burger in NYC! The atmosphere is chill, great place to take a break from NYCs frenetic energy.
Really great bar with fun people, a historic location in the west village. Famous for its hamburger
No waspy snobs, cheap and delicious bar food, great seating for relaxing with friends. My favourite gay bar.
Awesome dive bar in the city with a lot of history. Great burgers and fries and always fun.
I love Julius. The music is always quiet enough for conversation, people are very friendly, and the staff are great.
I know its one of the oldest gay bars ever, but its just not my scene. Its very old school, local dive bar.
There is something about this bar that I find rather charming and while I haven’t quite met many guys here, perhaps I might see myself coming on rarer occasions in the future as the other patrons were kind.
Cool place. Great atmosphere. Highly recommend. Will def be returning!
An amazing place to hang out in the village. The food is cheap and very yummy. Very friendly place.
Just a nice neighborhood spot with a great staff fair prices and by far a great burger.... thanks Matt
Great food, nice people and you cant beat happy hour.

Wonderful staff, most relaxing and enjoyable bar experience I have ever had in NYC!
Good food, fabulous people. Always a friendly atmosphere.
My go to bar when I was in my 20s Loved the clientele, the drinks and the food. There is nothing like a Julius burgerBob
Great people and historic place. I felt welcomed and the staff was kind
Great burgers and onion rings...awesome service and pour. Good people and fun establishment.
Im too young to go here and will be for a loooooong time but the drinks are super cheap and it has history.
Warm. Inviting. Clean. A museum. Friendly. Locals. Young from surrounding universities. Delicious ! Yum 😋 @carlos bronx
Great bar with good food. Servers are also very friendly
Great bar, great customers, great ambiance, great location
Great no frills dive bar with cheap hot dogs, grilled cheeses, and chicken tenders.
Chilled bar with a mix of ages and people - contrary to write-ups. Cheap bar snack and good happy hour until 9pm!
Nice mature crowd, great staff, great food too! Highly recommended
This place is a classic that maintains its sense of history in the community while also being accessible to anyone who comes for a drink.
It’s in waverly place but has ZERO WIZARDS!!! Not at all like the tv show! I do not recommend!!!
Historical gay bar -- great drinks! Theres even a grill inside
The new bartender Danny is great with his customer service and his drink making skills are just as good
Classic old timey gay bar that played a role in history (look it up). Cheap drinks, gets really fun late.
Cool bar, great for meeting hot gay men; aging from 21 to 40+
Great ambience, friendly bartenders, great barfood, great chief.Good place to hang out with friends.

Best gay bar in the city for all folks cheap strong drinks
Long standing and friendly bar with good, daily happy hour drinks
The person who prepare the food was not friendly at all. but the place is perfect for gay people.
The sliders are good for bar food and the cooks are the sweetest men ever.
Love this place. Good drinks and good food and great people
Fun gay bar, with great music! Have such a fun time here
Always friendly and usually busy. Great neighborhood bar
Historic bar that deserves to continue being visited

Went for a quick lunch and enjoyed my sandwich and beer.
Hey, it may not be the oldest but it feels like it! Good drinks, nice place, historic!
People are friendly...love the bartenders...very engaging!
Traditional gay bar in the heart of the Stonewall area. Friendly staff, prices are very moderate...
Mature and fun atmosphere, good food and drinks. Ray is everything!
Great local bar with friendly staff and patrons!
Oldest gay bar , amazing drinks and nice peeps
Unreasonably good burger and great staff
