Drinks are not really diverse, drink prices are very high compared to the general level. The DJ plays good music, the music is very suitable for the 8x and 9x generations. The security guard inside is also quite polite, but the security guard outside is somewhat uncomfortable with foreign guests and can be said to be impolite when he pushes a foreign male guest after checking everything procedure. This is extremely disrespectful to customers.
Our friends and I decided to check out this place since the music seemed to bop. IDs checked, then walked over to the security guard. She does the wand thing, then says something (I didn’t understand what she said bc she was sucking on a lollipop). She says ‘no’, and I said ‘I didn’t hear you’ and she proceeds to say to open my bag. She starts searching my bag and says ‘you can’t come in with the excedrin bottle.’ Mind you the bottle in question holds about 24 caplets of excedrin. So yeah I was denied entry for a little bottle of excedrin. Thanks brass monkey, we won’t be back. Picture included for reference.
Didnt even make it in the door without the security guards being extremely rude. Then we make it in the door and I was yelled at 5 different times to move out of the way and stand somewhere else by bouncers. Then the bartender was extremely rude as well. Felt very very rushed while trying to buy a round of drinks. And then while ordering the bartender stops paying attention and is trying to get other people to come get drinks. Not one staff member was nice or had a good attitude, and I work customer service for a living, so I dont see an excuse. Have been coming to Brass for years and after this experience will never come back again. Its sad to see how downhill its gotten over the years. Very bad experience. Keep the attitudes at home.
Went to Brass Monkey for the first time yesterday, after hearing good things from my mom. But it sadly disappointed. Security guards inside and outside are extremely rude and disrespectful. They will even try to prod at you to move. Over priced drinks. Got crowded fast so barely any room to dance and still the security guards try to push you out of the way. Bar tenders make good drinks but some were rude. But overall would not return! Don’t come! There are so many other good bars out there too!
I would go to Brass Monkey all the time. Been going there for a good while now and never had issues. Suddenly, I wasnt allowed in for my neck tattoo..Ive always had it. When I tried to explain my self, they cut me off and told me I wasnt allowed in. Before you say you cant have a neck tattoo and go in on a Friday Ive been there on Fridays and Saturdays before. No issues
Nearly broke my ankle walking off the dance floor. The foam machine suds had saturated the floor at the edge of the walkway to the bar/patio next to the DJ booth. If youre reading this fake an injury there and sue them, its what I shouldve done now that I think of it. Seriously this place needs to get that fixed has anyone else experienced this I know I cant be the only one.
Never thought I would write a review on this place up until this past experience. I come with 3 friends and we wait in a VERY long line, ok that’s fine. We finally get there and the security tells our first friend he can’t come in “because his boss thinks he is under the influence” which is like. What? So we check out some other places and he ends up leaving, so me and my other friend decide to go back into the line and wait AGAIN since our friend that was “the problem” decided to go home. We finally get to the front of the line and the security now tells ME that his boss says I am under the influence and then denies ME entry. But we came here to drink??! So now are ALL of us all of a sudden under the influence??? How Incredibly stupid! I’ve read the reviews of this place and it’s without a doubt true. I just ignored it. But this was very annoying with no explanation, nothing just plain a WASTE OF TIME and absolutely stupid.
This bar is an absolute gem for anyone looking to dance the night away while sipping on fantastic drinks. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the pulsating beats and vibrant atmosphere that sets the stage for a memorable night out.
Atmosphere is Great! Its the security that stands by the bar inside and YELLS at you to take a step back .00001 second after you are handed your drink, RUDELY, multiple times in the span of 1 second. When you say anything back they threaten to kick you out. youre guarding a bar sir, chill.
Yess gurl you definitely wanna come here 💋❤️Definitely enjoyed my bday celebration here. Their bartenders are hella fine. Especially Robert/Jordan that smile of theirs. Great atmosphere, drinks are amazing, bartenders taking care of myself and my guest. Yess gurl 10/10
I’m an architecture student, and habitually carry MANY markers/pens on me for when the creative energy hits. I made it to the point when security checks my purse and she very rudely exclaims, “what are these?!” - we both look at each other dead in the eye, my realization hitting that the security believes I’ll graffiti the stalls. Her compromise was that I throw away my expensive art supplies, place them by the wall for public grabs, or go. I choose to go, very embarrassed. I’m in my mid 20’s, this gave middle school mixer energy. I might’ve returned if the confrontation wasn’t so hostile, I understand they deal with a lot of shenanigans.
I love going for emo night :) I wish security was a lot nicer; they tend to send my social anxiety into orbit but it’s usually chill once we get inside.
Absolutely love the atmosphere at Brass Monkey! Everyone was super friendly and the bartenders are awesome. Music is great and everyone looks like they’re enjoying themselves on the dance floor.
This place is always very welcoming, the staff and security are like no other. My drinks are made fast and the people are amazing. Definitely going to be seeing me more often.
What a fun spot! Not only were the bar tenders super awesome & without all the attitude even on a busy night! Drinks were cold & food was delish, definitely going back for the next emo nite!
One of the bestest bars my boyfriend and besties have been to ever!!!Music is awesome no matter which night or theme you go on, youll dance the night away. Drinks are so tasty, and affordable! No matter your style of drinking, they have something for you to enjoy with friends. Abner and Si are one of the friendliest bestest bartenders weve ever met! They sure do make you feel like family, HIGHLY recommend visiting this place, youll have no regrets!!!
Most amazing place to have a party, celebration , after work get away to hang out. Bartenders are some of the best in SA! Best place on the strip to get your Emo merch!! And can’t forgot the best music every night !!!!
Went out to Brass Monkey for a friends birthday and my jacket was stolen and my friend lost the key to her apartment. It was about 45 degrees and raining outside and they wouldn’t let me back in to see if my jacket was there while my friends and I waited for my Uber. When we called about our lost items we got no answer. I sent a email and message on instagram and still got nothing (this was weeks ago btw). The staff were rude and unhelpful, the drinks were insanely overpriced, even for a bar/club.
One of my favorite places to hangout and catch a vybe. Bartenders are all super awesome staff is always professional. And the atmosphere is always chill. If your looking for a dope spot dwf hit the emo nights!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
DONT WASTE YOURE TIMECame here before on emo night ..:no problem but came a few months later was told tattoos only on certain days …came back on the certain days was told the same thing . This place sucks
I love brass monkey! It’s such a fun atmosphere and the bartenders are so great!! This is the place I prefer going to on the St. Mary’s strip!! Always a good time!!
This bar would not let me in because I had my birth control. I told him I could even show proof that it was medicine prescribed to me. He still would not let me in. Ridiculous that you can’t have your birth control in the bar!!!!!
I love the vibes and the theme nights here. Shoutout to Dwayne for always keeping me and my cousin and friends safe whenever we come out!!!
Loved this place ! The vibe was everything the music! I didn’t sit down at all. Danced all night. Drinks were nice n cold and service was fast.
I love this place ! The atmosphere is great and its fun. They also have good music. All the staff is so friendly .
Great experience there. Love all the different theme nights they offer. Friendly staff and good drinks. Good atmosphere.
Such a great place! I like how they put the safety of others and their team first by providing security inside and outside.Great music!
We had a friends birthday party here and it was a blast. The DJ was great and so was the atmosphere. Good times, great memories!
Fun awesome place to meet new people and have a some drinks. The manager very sweet and helpful, good music and staff....
Always have a great time at Brass...Drinks are good, DJ is very exceptional, and location is excellent!! Proper spot for some fun on the strip!
Rob! That’s my boy!!!!! Stop suspending the man for nothing. So you want. Customers or not haha good times I love you guys
Six drink minimum??? I ordered 4 white claws, that somehow wasnt enough, the bartender basically forced me to buy two more drinks for random people to give me ID and card back. This place is a scam, theyre desperate for money and resorting to illegal tactics to extort it from patrons.
No food at the place, none that I could see. Pure drinks. Service is fast. Great music
Went to check out emo night was denied entry for wearing a black leather vest….. no colors no patches just a plane leather vest…. If you are so afraid of this and try to force me to leave it outside where it can get stolen maybe you shouldn’t be in this business….
Hands down, best club ever! The people, drinks, music everything! This place is a guaranteed blast, i have read the reviews before going here and kinda scared me… but absolutely false!!!! Oh and the barback inside was such a cutie and sweetheart!
People at the door discriminate they don’t let people in with professional ink tattoos on there neck . even if the bar plays rock and classic rock
Kyle(Gizmo)was a great bartender! Went there for Halloween night, he kept us hydrated and entertained! The place is great, lots of room and the entry is open so you can smoke. Great location and lots of room to dance. Cheers! -the dude dressed as Jiraiya
Bartenders are awesome and fast! Always such a good vibe no matter what night I go.
Decent downtown night club! Good events on weekdays and cheap drinks what more can you want?
Brass Monkey has to be one of the best places in San Antonio to dance and drink! Inexpensive drink prices and friendly bartenders and super clean bathrooms!!! To top it off they have the best theme nights! Definitely something for everyone!
Great time overall, just be mindful of your tab. Hate for the bartender to overcharge you.
I had a great experience at this club, just a great place to unwind at. Looking forward to go back again.
THe drinks are great - the atmosphere is to die for - and definitely a place to be - a must go!!
Tribute nights are a scam, go for 15 minutes of 3 songs stretched out by a remix every hour. 🚮
This was quite literally the worst bar I have ever been to. First of all they have extremely invasive security where male workers were giving a pat down to only certain people in line. Very uncomfortable, then the security proceeded to throw away several items out of our bags including labeled advil. When we finally made it in we were continually harassed by staff for simple things including waiting in line for the bar. Extremely overcrowded with bad music- not worth your time.
I don’t usually write reviews but here I am. I’ve been twice. First time was cool and by that I mean, no hassle or anything that made you second guess. Second time, on a Saturday night I was forced to wear a bandaid over my neck tattoo (an acronym) to get in. Asked the guy what the reason was. “It’s policy” was all he said. He wasn’t necessarily rude but wasn’t being any sort of helpful with a thorough explanation. Don’t think it won’t keep me from going, but definitely deserves a one star for such an outlandish rule and lack of clarity. Can only imagine what they’d tell someone with a fully tatted neck
I agree with what the other reviewer posted on here. Security guy (who’s obviously a failed cop) acts like Gestapo, throwing away, legal vapes and coming up with arbitrary reasons as to why you are not allowed in. Once inside, you’re not allowed to stand anywhere near the bar, even if it’s practically empty. Drinks aren’t that expensive however, you’re required to buy a certain amount if you’re using a debit or credit card. The music inside is typically top 40s, so nothing spectacular. My experience here is almost a polar opposite, compared to bars in Houston, which are far more inclusive, and relaxed on rules and policies. The venue is actually nice, it’s just the owners/management that has to go.
I normally go to brass monkey to have a good time but last night I had an incident that will greatly affect if I go back. My friends and I bought drinks at the same time (two beers two shots). I was charged $20 and he made her open a tab, and kept her card and ID which is weird that they do that to begin with but it was because she had charges less than $10 so they have to keep your card if your charge is that low. When she closed at the end of the night she was charged for $50 worth of drinks and most of them were incorrect. I understand that it’s crazy so I go to the bartender to correct it. First off he was really rude and told me I had an attitude when I asked for him to refund me or her for the drinks we paid for because it’s clear he double charged us. He refused to do that. Management got involved and led me to believe they were resolving the issue when they were standing in a corner “discussing” what to do next. No one asked me questions. The lady manager said she was checking cameras and the guy later confirmed that wasn’t happening. and I got told that they’ll count drawers in the morning and that I’m not getting helped for it now because they have “a business to run” I’m sorry but as someone who works in service it was really terrible how myself and my friends were treated. If someone does something incorrect you fix that. Simple as that. Hope others are not treated this was.
Drinks are awesome and reasonable priced. Atmosphere is great and staff are polite.
If I could give them a 0 I would. I had the worse time here. A fight started in line and the sercuity pepper sprayed him and it got on everyone’s face. I started crying so hard and begged them to let me in to go to the restroom to watch my face or give me a paper towel. The owner refused and told me I wasn’t allowed to go in for the rest of the night because I was “causing a problem”. He even put his hands on me and started pushing me claiming he was “old school” and could hit a women.
Awesome drink specials and great atmosphere!! The bartenders are fast and awesome
SUPER FUN!! Always has amazing themed days! They go above and beyond for their customers!!! 10/10!!!
Never in my life have I felt more discriminated against. I moved to San Antonio a few months ago and have loved going to Brass monkey. I had a friend come visit and I told her we had to go check it out. After paying for an Uber, we arrived and went through security. I was stopped by security because I have one small tattoo of a sailboat behind my ear, no other visible tattoos. I was told I was not allowed in the bar, by an employee covered in full neck tattoos. I’ve always had fun at this bar, but I promise I will NEVER return after the most ridiculous policy I have ever heard. Do not go to this bar if you are any type of alternative (not that I would even consider myself that) and looking to be accepted. They are living in the same backwards policies as much of Texas. Very disappointed.
You will likely run into someone you dont want to run into here, but youre also likely to meet someone that you wished youd meet again. Ive been coming here since 2012 and Friday nights never disappoint; back then I thought the crowd was a bit older as they played lots of 80s music and freestyle but now that I have matured over the decade, they play 2000s and 2010s music and I have realized that I am now one of those old people; I embrace this full circle moment however. Enough of the philosophy though, the bar is decent and prices are right. The packed dance floor is always lots of fun!
The $10 card minimum is absurd. Do you know how unbelievably miniscule debit/credit card merchant fees are these days? The rates have gotten so trivial that most places have even done away with $5 card minimums. In reality there are incentives for merchants to encourage card swipes, as customers will spend more to get their cards cashback/rewards bonuses. Anyways I did not tip the bar staff, and until they do away with that $10 minimum, I will continue to not tip the bar staff, seeing as how the place is making more than enough profit to pay their staff a livable salary by charging $10 for one beer. If thats the only way you guys can pull a profit with hundreds of customers every Friday night, your owners financially inept.
Awesome place, definitely a place to go! If you havent been you are missing out!
The management here is run like the gestapo . I had to give the bartender my id to keep an opened tab, even with a credit card. I decided to pay with cash because of the inconvenience. I was asked to step away from the bar while taking shots even tho it was dead at 9:30 on a Saturday . There is constant surveillance and body guards everywhere. I’m not sure if this place is safe. Place is cheap but it’s not worth the hassle. They made my friend throw away her LEGAL vape.also they will not give you tap water they will force you to buy a bottle
Bartender forced me buy 1 more drink. until that didn’t give me back my ID and credit card.
Great music, the drinks are amazing, will be returning back🤍
Very rude front door security. Save your time and hit up somewhere else.
A well established bar with great service. There is no other bar like brass monkey, it’s one of a kind from security to maintaining a great atmosphere to the bartenders with speed my service and a great smile.
New look is nice. But when the bartenders says, want a double then pour me 4 count..then charge me more than the river walk..plus yalls alcohol seems diluted...your 1800 anejo didnt look like anejo.i wonder with all yalls clear alcohol.
Went yesterday was turned away for having a vape. In 2023. At an outdoor bar. The time before I was bait and switched by the scammy bartender. I had a ranch water that was $4. Went for another the bartender waved a bottle of patron when I asked for another ranch water. I said sure thinking it would be the same, he then proceeded to charge $44 for 2 tequila ranch waters smh. If you like cocktail bar prices at a place that smells like urine and has a bunch of police academy flunkies at the door then this is your place.
One of the best bars on the strip, awesome theme nights!!
Way to overcrowded no control security is a coward. They take the cheap way out instead of trying to resolve issues. Y’all are a bar that used to be the greatest bar now y’all just are . no good quit trying to overpack to make up for money you’ll get it in time
Celebrated my sisters birthday and had a great time. It does get pretty crowded, so we appreciated the separate space with the tables. Jordan, the bartender, is amazing! He helps us everytime and is always working hard!
. I waited about 10 or 15 minutes to get to the club and once we reached the entrance the security guard told my fiancé he would have to put Band-Aids all his face or we wouldn’t be allowed to come in to the club because he has tattoos on his arms, neck, and face which was pretty odd because we had just visited the night before and everything was fine not quite sure what shifted, but it seems like they definitely discriminate. Lol and surprisingly such strict rules for a club with no dress code and serves drinks from a plastic cup LOL.
Bras monkey the biggest nerds on the blockThey have 5 body guards outside and have like 6 inside lol and are so touchy if you step on the white line, can’t stand by the restroom for 5 seconds until a body guard starts pushing you out the wayI’ve been to multiple clubs from different states and I’ve never been in a club with body guards that are so touchy like brass monkeyLet me tell you, it’s not always pretty for body guards to be so handsy with drunk people who are literally being pushed and forced to be mushed into a crowd when they are just trying to stand around and drink and chat with their friends/familyI was standing by the restroom with my boyfriend for a few second to hang him my jacket and wallet so I can go to the restroom and a body guard was already there to tell us to moveIt’s impossible to actually enjoy your time without a body guard touching you to step out their wayProbably the most uncomfortable club I’ve ever been in
Very cool spot in San Antonio! Great atmosphere and staff is friendly!
So on 1/14/22 i tried using my paper id and they didn’t accept it but they let my little sis (20 years old) get in. The bouncer wouldn’t let me get in 25 years old cause I had a paper ID but my sis using a fake id (only 20 years old ) got in. That’s the real tea they’re not ready for haha. Btw airports and police officers will accept paper IDs. The bouncer was very aggressive when I wanted an explanation, it looked like he had some anger issues and wanted to throw a punch. I have not gone back since then, there are many more classy and friendlier places :)
Amazing bar and amazing food I would highly recommend this place
Best theme nights and always a great time here!
They have drink specials and a very lively crowd. There is a lot of room to mingle. You can sit outside and order from bar there or go inside and hit the dance floor. Went on 80s night and they played great music. Very much enjoyed the whole experience and afterwards, within walking distance, there are food trucks to finish off the night right. Definitely coming back again
Siiiick bar/club. The place isn’t too big to be overwhelming & also not too small or crowded to make you uncomfortable. Depending on the night you go, it will definitely be a different vibe. There’s a full bar/bar staff so there’s never a long wait for drinks. It also recently got a remodel (cleanup) which makes it more appealing inside/outsideSome music can be obscure or mixes may be off sometimes but not too bad. Beware of creepy locals or strange randos that try to dance with you/get your info. Like any spot around here, parking is a biggie if you’re driving.Overall, a nice place if you want a regular spot to frequent
50/50 of me being able to get in sometimes they have a tattoo policy and sometimes they don’t. I have lots of tattoos (mostly horror movie based) NOT a single gang related tattoo or prison tattoo (don’t even have a speeding ticket to my name) but even still sometimes they won’t let me in because of my neck tattoo and sometimes they will. I always dress in jeans and a horror tee or music tee. It’s disappointing because I like Brass but they’re the only bar on the strip that has a problem with my tattoos 🤷🏻♂️ I thought we were passed all the judging a book by its cover..
HORRIBLE!They treated my friend horribly, They denied her entry because she had a Puerto Rican ID! The bouncer showed little to no respect to my group and shoved us out of the way. I was appalled by the treatment and the act of blatant discrimination. There were 2 other bouncers and they didn’t even try to help her by looking at her ID! This is the third time that something like this has happened to someone I know here!
I stumbled upon 80s night on a Friday and had a blast. The music was great and the crowd was fun. They have great drink specials too (that night it was $2 Lone Star). I didnt have any problems with rude staff or bouncers. I was also very impressed with how clean the restroom was, even at the end of the night.
Great place to grab a beer with friends. I mainly stuck to the patio area as it was quieter and warmer than inside the night I went. The bathrooms were pretty clean, but the stalls are really shallow, so youre practically against the door while you do your business, which is not the greatest. In terms of alcohol, the drink selection seemed to be good. There is a stage for bands inside and the area feels very intimate--you should be able to easily see the performance from anywhere. I would definitely return here with friends.
I wish I could put 0... zero stars!!! I was having the time of my life with friends and family, as one family member was headed to the restroom they escorted him out, I asked what he had done wrong to be escorted out as I had been behind them the whole way . The security would not answer. I felt it was very intentional and discriminate. I was sad. I cant believe not only we live in this time, but we spent well over what we had ordered... we were over charged... do not open a tab, pay cash. They definitely take advantage... nice music horrible staff...
I really enjoy this bar but the music needs to be better. Its always the same songs every weekend, it needs to be mixed up. Also maybe we should get some new LGBTQ+ DJs to spice up the dance floor on Thursgayz.
Dwayne is awesome and is always super nice and helpful
I love this place Thursdays are super cheap drinks, its usually pretty good music, sometimes they have an off night and its just straight trash music. But either way go with people and have some fun. Theres a taco truck like a min away walking distance get that after. But I always have fun even if the music is just alright. 80s night is fun.
It was our first time there. But it was pretty nice. The bartenders, along with all the other staff, were very friendly and attentive. Big shout out to Fernando who took care of us tonight and made us feel at home. The music was just as promised. The drinks were on point and reasonable. Would highly recommend.
Love this place!!! Good prices on drinks. The only thing I dont like is, how crowded it gets. They need to invest in a top floor or expand on the dance floor. I have been sexually assaulted; with my butt being slapped by people. I cant pinpoint individuals due to the crowdedness. I have left the bar due to this issue. I deem the dance floor unsafe, once the place gets crowded.
Positive vibe good music and great atmosphere.
I’ve been a regular at Brass for the past few years (even before covid), and I always have had a great time. After reading some of the recent reviews it definitely sounds like someone is purposely targeting Brass. As a frequent patron, I wanted to share that I’ve never had a bad experience at Brass. I am a female and this is the go to bar for all my girlfriends and myself. I’ve never experienced being drugged or treated poorly here. We actually always feel safe here because the security/staff seem to be on top of any unruly behavior and any one who’s to intoxicated. Also I’ve never had issues with any of the bartenders overcharging me or being unprofessional in any manner, I think the people who say they are overcharged just don’t realize how drinks can add up, especially after a few. Brass will forever be my regular hangout, I love Emo night and I will always recommend coming here for a good and safe time!
Not a bad club of youre looking for a casual night out. It is a step above a dive bar with a small dance club. The DJ was great. Drink prices were good and there were enough bar tenders working that you didnt wait too long to get service. Drink selection while wide in flavor selection is actually limited as to kinds of alcohol served. Crowd tended to be really to mid-twenties. parking wad non existent on site. You had to find parking on the street or pay for parking in another lot. If you are looking for something nicer and classier this is not the place for you.
Went there a few times, it was okay. Last time I went with my nursing school friends, and the bartender asked for my ID and debit card and then they both magically disappeared. Went the next day, and they still couldnt find them. This happened right before I had an international trip. Guess that was a sign to avoid this place.
If you love retro, youll love this place! Great music and they show the videos. You can reserve a table for free for parties and Fernando is great when you call to book. Drinks are cheap even on Sat nights. No complaints and always enjoy coming here.
Great place, Great atmosphere, Great music, love the videos. They may have to get a bigger place its gotten so Popular it can be over crowded at times. But keep it on the Strip. Give a shot guarantee you will have a great time.
I go to brass a lot which I used to love but I’m gonna be honest I hate the DJ, everytime I’ve went it was always the same music and the same playlist of course people request songs or ask the DJ for new songs but it’s the same thing over and over again, I’ve had one of my best friend who is a regular finally understand where I came from and he would go every weekend but now all of my friends got tired of brass please please change up the music and not only on sundays or any special events please do this on Friday’s or Saturday SWITCH IT UP PLEASE I HATE HEARING THE SAME PLAY LIST EVERY WEEKEND!!
So this is a pretty standard establishment but with a few perks. Firstly they do have security body check at the entrance to prevent any undesirables from entering. Inside, there are two main areas: an open air patio with picnic like benches to chill and have your drink from the two bars right there. One accepts card, the other just cash. When you enter the main building, youre met with a selection of bars then leading in and to the right, they have a sizable square dancefloor with high stools and tables to the side. When I visited on a Saturday, they typically have 80s night, so retro music will be playing once the crowd starts to fill up after 10pm. And they display 80s movies and commercials on some of their flat screens to set the nostalgic atmosphere.Overall, the music was not bad if you can groove to the oldies, the crowd tends to be about middle aged, chill, usually there for drinks, good company, some flirtation and a bit of dancing if youre feeling confident. Its a simple set up, good for a while of entertainment with some friends but perhaps not so stimulating for the younger crowd.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE.This place felt like a chaperoned YMCA dance that happened to serve alcohol. You like getting patted down by cops before entering places? You like being harassed by bouncers who wish they were cops? This is the place for you.I think they are catering to the younger crowd that doesnt know any better. There are much better bars in very close proximity. Go there instead.
I used to go here on Sundays. 2$ anythings. The only bar that has a very friendly social atmosphere. you can literally go up to anyone and talk without them giving you that look like who the hell are you. Good vibes. most of the people here dont know how to dance so if you want to dance and dont know how you can definitely come here and just let loose and have fun. :)
Fun music, lots of space to dance and opportunities for pictures (if that’s your vibe). It was a little too hot inside.
Go to the bars next door to the left of the entrance of this bar. Those bars had much friendlier staff.I got grabbed my staff here after I told them I just needed to get my IDIt took waiting 2hrs just to get my ID.1st impression was terrible.Never going back again. This 1 star review is deserved.
The drinks were way over priced for what we were getting. Iced down drinks, ridiculous. Definitely not the same brass that I used to go to 5 years ago.
Great music and atmosphere. Clean bathrooms.
I had a lot of fun once inside but outside the security guard at the door was very rude. It was early, hardly anyone inside yet so there was no reason to be rude about me forgetting I had a tiny bottle of contact solution in my bag that I had to throw away. Didnt even know it was not allowed. I got to the first bar outside and the total was some dollars with .25 cents. I decided to pay with a $5 dollar bill and .25 cents so that I can give the bartender some dollars for tip. I paid with 2 dimes and a nickel. The bartender told me they only accept quarters!!!! I have never been so shocked to see someone turn away U.S. Currency!!!! Once inside later in the night it got full so I went to the bar to get another drink, it got spilled going back to my table due to no area free to walk to the bar and back. Once it fills up, and youre not sitting near the bar, theres no away for you to go out there and get a drink without being stuck or pushed around by the crowd. Please talk to your employees about being more friendly towards customers.
If you are a young woman and wish to be drugged unwillingly and end up at the ER after the bouncer throws you out the back door alone with no water or help , this is the place for you. Classy joint.
I love this freaking place, what more can i say. I am going to die here one day. Love the bartenders, the music is great! Love love love the 80s night, love seeing everyone have fun. From the younger people to the older people, its always a good place to be. Great ambience!
I went here last night and it was quite the experience. To start, it seemed that security was extremely over the top. I agree that safety is important and liabilities are a concern, however, it was over the top. Checking every little thing. The bouncer barked at me too, that I needed to get in line. When it wasnt clear there was one. Make it more clear whos in charge of IDing. When theres 3 people in the same outfit standing near the door, along with other people walking through the sidewalk, its hard to tell. When we finally made it inside I was almost overwhelmed by the smell of vomit that lingered in the air. When I saw the cheap liquor and beer they serve, that made sense. The drinks were good but as another reviewer put it, they kept herding customers away from the bar. You couldnt even stand around 2 seconds before they start moving you. Even if you were standing within 4 or 5 feet. Keeping the bar clear is important for the bartender to serve other guests but if theres no one ordering, why does it matter? The staff could afford to be more pleasant. At the end of the day, this is a bar. People come here to drink, dance and have a good time. Theres a way to regulate safety without micromanaging. How do I know? Because so many other fantastic bars do it. This is still a customer service type business and treating paying customers like that is never ok. Its unfortunate because I see they serve food there as well and it looks like it tastes amazing. Too bad Ill never find out because I wont be going again.
Denied me at the door with a 99 degree temp after standing outside for an hour.Had some great times here but all the good bartenders are gone now and left this place a shell of what it once was.I dont recommend it anymore. Any other place serves cheaper, better drinks with better service.
Came on emo night. Don’t go to the emo looking girl, light complexion, Hispanic, dyed blonde hair, emo like make up. She was the only female bartender the night I went. She charged me extra on the card and even through away the receipt when I asked for it. Go here often but this was the first bad experience that this happened so I’m assuming it was just her.
Terrible place. My friend had her anti anxiety and chemo medication and they wouldn’t let her in. That’s a HIPPA violation and they were very rude and mean about it. When we asked to speak to a manger or owner they said “we don’t know”. DO NOT GO HERE
The bartenders trained to waive you down at the bar, it’s so awkward and desperate. Service is chaotic and employees are rude. Thumbs down to who ever is training the staff and hiring.
Its actually not a bad place, but the rating for me is service staff, price, and venue. Price and venue A+...Staff are completely out of line, particularly the bouncers. Their attitude and expression toward guests makes being there more like a job than a small getaway.
Excellent experience...no doubt best in San antonio
Ive been going for maybe 3 years now, the quality of the experience has gone down exponentially. Still the best place to go on a Sunday night. I DONT RECOMMEND USING YOUR CARD TO PAY HERE. Theyve put a hold on my card for $50 before when my tab was 12. Their Twitter account is fast at replying which is nice.
Could not get a higher recommendation. Had friends in town from all over the world and we had the best time ever! Must see Christian when you do, great bartender. Although door staff could be friendlier(just an observation), this coming from an old Doorman/Dj/Manager. Seriously, thank you for a great time!
Fun club but tow company picks you up the minute your parking expires.
The vibe and music are usually good here, but the security is extremely rude. On the night in question, my friend and I werent even going inside the bar when the security rudely said hey, back of the line is over there. We were literally just passing by and this rude security having a bad attitude tried to take it out on us. We werent going in and we will keep it that way from now on. Please check ur securitys attitude towards women. Not okay!!!
This bar treated me as if I had a disease. Upon searching my bag at the door they confiscated my ibuprofen bottle. I went in and was happily served by the bartender. Less than 5 minutes later an extremely overweight bouncer was tapping me on the shoulder saying I had to leave because I was too intoxicated Even though I had just been admitted and served a drink. After asking many many time why I was asked to leave I was never given a clear answer and the overweight bouncer RIPPED the michelob ultra from my hands and pushed me out the door with no explanation. I have never been treated so poorly anywhere in my life. I wouldn’t go back to this bar if my life depended on it. Seriously the worst place I have ever been in my life.
Every Thursdays they have wells specials. But make sure you say the words wells specials and your choice of liqour. I walked up and asked for a whiskey sprite and got charged for Top shelf when it should have been a wells whiskey sprite. If I wanted a top shelf whiskey I would have specified but I didnt and thats how they get you.
Such a great diversity in music and great drinks
Absolutely horrible. I show up and they pat the men down but not the ladies. I ask then why segregate men and women and they tell me “know the laws” when I proceeded to ask them about the laws they mentioned they didn’t have anything to say. Everyone is rude and I will never go back. If this was a college bar in my college town they wouldn’t be in business. Sad that a couple rotten apples will ruin a good place.
My friends and I use to go to this bar a lot, but lately Ive had a really bad experience. This wasnt the first time it has happened but I felt alienated by management and that is a problem for me. On Wednesday night my group of friends were there and let me tell you we were the largest group spending lots of $$. The Assistant manager whos significant other has history with myself, was making it obvious he was talking about us and staring and pointing. I have no beef with anyone especially him because I barely know him, but he made it so uncomfortable that we left. It sucks because that place was dead and we wanted to have a good time but because of this I will never go there again AND I will be sure to tell everyone I know how the staff treats customers. You can expect my review to be more lengthy on Yelp as well and Facebook!
This placed used to be great but the ghetto crowd found it. Unless you’re willing to get in a fight while trying to enjoy the great music. Stay far far away. Never again.
I didnt have any drinks and the bouncer said I was too intoxicated to come in. I am unsure how he came to that conclusion however I left and wrote this review. I was wearing an express button up long sleeve shirt, a pair of express jeans, and black loafer so I was well within dress code
I wish I give this place zero stars, this bartender gave me the worst experience my friends and I were simply enjoying my birthday, this man was not being patient with us whatsoever we had only had just walked in to order drinks not even five minutes passed. My friend was trying to order bartender said he couldnt hear him, then he serves other people, I can get we didnt know exactly what we wanted yet, then we caught his attention again, a few of us have not been here before. My friend was trying to speak louder over the music and then he snaps why do you have to talk me like that? Suddenly he can hear us just fine now then orders security to escort my friend. I wish I could get his name obviously didnt have time we had just walked in. Awful experience.
Good music and cheap drinks but the staff is very rude and the bouncers are pushy. They will threaten to kick you out over stupid things such as talking too loud, or even kicking off your shoes to have a good time. Oh and get ready to be frisked...
Ive been going to the Brass Monkey for several years now. This is my go to place. I love Saturday nights, 80s New Wave. Made many new forever friends at Brass. Its a casual, lay back forget about your troubles kinda place.I dont have to get dressed up in heels, wear make up, or get drunk even though their coconut margaritas are good. I can don on my jeans, my favorite Depeche mode t-shirt and my converse and dance to the best 80s music thanks to DJDC. Yes Im over 45 but I can still dance the night away and believe me I do!!!!
The themes need to get better in my opinion, you ain’t going to get a lot of money making little kids themes. From a business perspective, bring girl bartenders , and stop being a little kid!
An expansive, heavy alternative bar/club with many events and a wild set of interesting characters who attend regularly. It can be a bit hectic, so if you are a reserved person, it may not be your scene. Otherwise, its a welcoming and trendy environment. I was the D/D, so I cant say much about the drinks.
Had a good time...theme was 80s night, it was very crowded on the dance floor but everyone was cool and had fun. Every song had the video on screens around the dance floor, that was fun. Outside seating area with bar and inside bar as well. 💚😎✌️
Jonathan peña and Akeem were great they made sure we were taken care of and felt safe. They were quick and very polite to help when we needed them. Great drink specials and music plus very clean restrooms. Will definitely be going back.
Door staff is rude and uneducated on laws regarding id for age verification. Security guard is a joke. He couldnt take down a fly.
Security is super strict they will kick you out for tripping on your shoe lace. They dont care if your drunk or not. Other then that good place, good vibes, nice people just be careful around the sercuity guards they will kick you out for little to no reason.
Drink specials almsot every day of the week, usually special nights have young people, weekends is a mix of older and younger but mostly older so if youre not in to that, might wanna go somewhere else. Bartenders are nice and hook it up. Music isnt to bad, mostly ga anthems and 80s 90s pop and dance music.
I’ve never had a bar confiscate my small bottle of Excedrine or the ball point pen out of my purse before. Completely ridiculous! Hated this place even more when we got inside. So smokey/foggy indoors that I couldn’t see or breathe. They have hired muscle to literally herd you away from the bar after you’ve ordered your drink, or even if you’re standing in the nearby vicinity. Won’t be going back. Won’t be going back here.
Great place to do dancing! They have different themes every weekend and they have big dance floors. Security is always on point and there is no cover fee.
All around fun place good atmosphere
I went to the David Bowie Bash with my friend. We were the first in line in order to get the pins. I was told that we couldnt come in because of my vital medication to my life was in my purse. We were told to throw it in the trash. I am very ill, and tonight was the first night in a long time that I have felt well enough to go out and not look like I am actively dying (I am). I was told that maybe if youre so sick that you shouldnt go out by the bouncer.I offered to show that the medication is mine with my name on my ID and name on prescription bottles. I offered to leave my medication behind the bar. My option was to toss them.I just wanted to feel normal again for one night before I have to take an increase in medication that will make me lose my hair and become sicker. Thank you to that incredibly insensitive bouncer who made me feel worthless for having an illness I neither wanted nor can control.
Not really my thing, way too crowded and loud for my taste. Much rather go to one of the more laid back bars nearby. The music was good though, mostly 90s hits. And despite other peoples bad experiences with bouncers I had no such troubles. I have a taser thats disguised as a flashlight and a swiss army knife in my purse and I forgot I had them on me. Bouncer was very observant about it which made me feel better about saftey. He politely told me I couldnt take it in and held on to it till we left. We told a different bouncer about a girl inside who was being made uncomfortable by some guy following her around and he went inside to look into it. So overall not my type of place, but the bouncers we interacted with did their jobs.
I had went and I was feeling good but wasn’t drunk the short skinny securityDidn’t allow me in saying I’m drunk but right after let’s 4 drunk people in 🤦🏽♂️ and when I asked the security he told me to walk away or he’s calling the cops. Really unprofessional
I used to like going here but they are against people wearing cross jewelry?? You literally have to hide it. Thats ridiculous and satanic. They always have something to say about clothing. I get the gang related stuff but come on. So annoying. I personally don’t wear crosses on me but my friends do and that’s disrespectful.
Definitely a hipster vibe but not in a bad way. Theyre a little rude though if you stand in the wrong spot. There are certain areas of the floor near the bar that youre not allowed to stand and if you are new and dont realize that, they will be rude about it. I understand theyre annoyed having to tell people all the time but someone whos knew there would be know any better.
I dont go inside, but as Rideshare driver, I pickup/ dropoff all the time. Its only open certain days but thats normal. Its a bar/ dance club, so come ready to move. When its busy, its a great place to go
First time Ive been kicked out of a bar or club and for nothing. We were a large group standing by the bar/dj area. Since the group was so large some were standing near the bar. Were told to stay clear of the bar. Tha place was packed, what do you expect people to climb on top of each other? The attitude given by the bouncer was returned in favor and we got kicked out. Bouncers are complete DBs... dont recommend and will never visit again... bit ghetto may I add
Great music! Decent dance floor! 1st Friday of the month means disco versus 80s music; Saturdays is 80s music. Reasonable price on drinks! Love this place!
Ive only been here once. I usually dont trust places that have security pat downs and rude bouncers. I understand the necessity of security but I just felt uncomfortable. Its ok if youre REALLY into 80s music.
TIP: if the doorman says he’ll hold something for you, do not believe them. They keep it and don’t give it back. I can’t believe i spent my money at an establishment that isn’t true to their word and didn’t give something back AFTER they said they would. Otherwise we would’ve just gone somewhere else. I’m repulsed and will not be returning due to terrible management and dishonest workers. This was outrageous.
Cheap drinks good music i have a love hate relationship with the bartenders though. Half are amazing and half are rude and slow AF. Overall this is one of my main spots and ive grown a lot of relationships with a lot of people that work there. No cover either which is awesome
Been coming to Brass Monkey for over 2 years now, and I always have a fun time. Their music has me on the dance floor from the moment I arrive until closing time. Their drink specials are the cheapest on the St. Marys strip and the best part (besides the music), is that theres NEVER a cover.
The security guards here think there guarding the white house & like to harass you for any little thing. They make you feel uncomfortable & watch you like a hawk. The one tall Mexican with a beard must be super insecure about himself because he definitely abuses the position given to him. Although the bartenders are super awesome but will not be going back because of the guards.
If you want to get crunky, head to the monkey!Brass Monkey has everything you want in a bar. A dance floor, cheap drinks, and the best 80s music around! Great for an adult crowd, or anyone looking for a fun time. Highly recommended!
I wish I could leave - stars, this place is not it if you’re trying to have a good time. They need to hire a new security staff if they plan on having any new revenue, the bouncers work at the will of their friends not the will of the bar or the owners. Absolutely thumbs down 👎
Had fun and all….. but security was rude and unprofessional. I get it if they hate their job and deal with unruly people, but that’s no excuse to make everyone their punching bag….
Great drink specials and music! No cover! Friendly staff. Dress code is not strict at all. Can get crowded sometimes. Love this place on the weekends!
Today was Christmas I showed up at your door I havent even had one drink. The black bald security officer was extremely rude to me. Apparently he thinks that everybody inside your bar is sober even after midnight. This idiot looked at me and told me extremely rudely or youre not going to be able to come in here and I asked him why is that very kindly? He sneered at me and answered with a condescending tone of voice telling me youre intoxicated. Im pretty sure TABC were to walk into your bar at 12:30 midnight they would find a lot of intoxicated people. I hadnt even have one drink tell that idiot I said I would never attempt to go there again and I will always detour my friends from going there as well.
This place is always packed which is a great thing and also a bad thing. But if you are looking for cheap drinks, a badass soundtrack, and to make no friends than look no further. Brass Monkey has a badass 80s and emo night. Their bartenders are very good as well.
The customer service was beyond rude, one they have the associates herding everyone like cattle and two, the bartenders were not attentive to those that were in line. The manager i believe was Ron was clueless when reporting my issues. They need to retrain their staff and have management consultation.
During my visit last night to brass monkey for there 75¢ well special they have on Thursdays , I got frisked by an officer very roughly. While patting me down the officer forced my hands up in a very aggressive manner. On top of that the officer started to dig in my pockets rather than just asking me what object was in my pocket ( my keys). I get safety is the main priority before entering this bar. What I don’t understand is how a LGBTQ bar would allow an officer like this to forcefully push my arms up like I am an in mate , then tell me to move aggressively afterwards. I will never come back to this bar after this.
I got FREE DRINKS considering the malnourished looking bartender stole my debit card and ID. Never had to tip or pay! Love it!
Service from bartender was terrible he was at the middle register. When another patron complained the manager came and asked why he was harassing his bartender and that it was $2 you call it [then implied not to expect good service] it was the worst. Management and that one bartender were killed an otherwise great night.
Poor customer service. When I was getting my ID checked by the bouncer he became very hostile towards me for no reason, like he wanted to fight me. Then used the excuse that he thought I was drunk to deny me entry. It was very strange, and overall Id just reccomend going somewhere with friendlier staff. If I could give less than one star I would.
Had a decent night last night other than the bartender overcharging for drinks. Felt pretty ripped off. We got drinks from the bartender to the far right. It seemed weird the other lines had tons of people yet he was struggling to waive people over. Seemed weird, but I thought hey why not. I ordered 2 brass monkeys which my fiance prompted them to be doubles. They ended up only being singles even though they were charged for doubles, but we were already buzzed and just wanted to go dance. We come back about 45 minutes later for our last drinks of the night. I dont know why we went to the same guy, but we were just wrapped up in the moment. To keep from opening a tab I ordered 2 triple cherry vodkas as are their normal 2 dollar special I figured 6 bucks a piece no problem. realizing later he charged the full 3.50 per shot making it 20 bucks. Its not much, but it certainly left a negative impression even after enjoying the music. Its more of the principal of respecting the trust of your drunk customers. There are some good bartenders, but I see clearly now you cant put equal trust in the staff at this location...
Great place to hang out and listen and have a couple of drinks and have party at and dance to 80’s music. Sometimes there is a line to get in. So I suggest to get there early. Parking is a big issue. Be prepared to pay for parking or find free parking on the street.
How could this place state no one can enter with a neck tattoo and then have employees working there with neck tattoos and face tattoos...ever heard the expression practice what you preach I guess not!
Security and pretty much staff in general got small pp energy
Always a blast & an amazing time!!!❤️
Great place, lots of fun, awesome prices on the drinks. Go there and most likely youll dance the whole. Mens restroom suck, the worse Ive ever seen at a night club.
Very chill place to be. The bartenders and staff are awesome and very friendly. If you like different variety of music, this is the place to be. Outside patio is a plus. Highly recommend.
Great music 🎶 Great vibes love it!
Everytime Ive been its something else thats not allowed in. Latest time was my pen. That I use to write with. Their reason was theres too much graffiti. Done with this place. The only bar Ive been to and have to be patted down more than the airport and I never know what I cant bring in. Better places I can go to on St. Marys street and feel less like Ive done something wrong.
Yo they kicked me out for LOOkING AT MY PHONE, as I stepped outside while I waited for my girl in the bathroom. Didnt slip, stumble or act drunk in any way, Security took my ID and started berating me and belittling me, had me wait outside the club for my girl for 20 mins while it rained and wouldnt allow me to be closer to the entrance where there was a cover from the rain. I had my girls phone so there was no way to contact her. A-HOLES working the door Threatened to arrest me because I wanted my ID back, which is my property so Im not sure why they would keep it from me other than to exercise his menial power over me and hold my property hostage. Security blows, go spend your money elsewhere. This place is a dump
They recently started REALLY watering the drinks down. I thought it was just the one bartender so I went to another bartender and same issue. The music is the only good thing about this place and that’s only if you’re into 80s electrónica.
This place is awesome! The obly thing i dont like about this place are the partender. Hit and miss drinks. Stole my money. And watched them steal others too. When confronted. Said idk what youre talking about. But the music and the people are what I came for. Loved their theme nights?
$28 for two drinks :(
Nothing fancy. A complete dive. Cheap drink specials. Great music themes. Always a good time as long as you dont expect anything beyond good music and reasonable drink prices in a dive bar setting.
This review is based on the employee on the right of my attached photo. He had me move from waiting near the restrooms for my husband to come out of the restroom. He said the area needed to be clear. Not even 30 seconds later I see him laughing with people in the same spot I was standing in and he didnt ask them to move. I asked him why he didnt tell them to move and he said its just his decision. I hate to think homophobia exists in this place but I guess so. So sad that an employee exhibits hate so blatantly and this place is ok with it.
Not only was I refused entry for having a neck/face tattoo, the bouncer was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional to mostly anyone trying to get inside.
I love brass. I usually only go on Sundays. Does get pretty packed so I usually show up as it opens. $2 you call it? The best. I always have fun dancing.
Saw that stupid girl got butt hurt because a manager stuck up for his bartender. it was 2 dollar you call its................ I LOVE THIS PLACE ! Anyone who complains about service on 2 dollar drinks needs to be tossed into traffic.I am old school as it gets, and when I bartended, drunky the clown was never ever listened to, just booted. We all know who they are, and we are all sick to death of them. I got out of the business because somehow, the customer was always right.............at a bar.................drunk....................sure they are. HA HA HARock on !
Good place to party, security guards will grope you though but try to play it off. Also bartenders will give you top shelf liquor without you asking for it but its almost never empty so....
Only played rap music, after being told they played all kind of music. They had the same beat for ten songs in a row. Only able to till it was a different song by looking at the singer. Would not send my enemy there
This is my happy place! Drinks are cheap, crowd is friendly and awesome, but most importantly the MUSIC makes you feel like you stepped back in time!! Soooo fun!!
Bartending staff was very friendly and professional. For as busy as they get, service is quick. Thank you management for having a great team.
Dwayne was the best he was the best bouncer. He made sure everybody acted right.
Drinks and music were freakin awesome tonight, but it was super crowded and hot! It looks like their fans need some cleaning. Love dancing here. Wish it had a bigger dance floor.
Good music and crowd is pretty laid back. The beer could be colder and the parking on St. Marys is and always has been horrendous. But I will definitely go back.
I always feel safe and the music is AMAZING!!!! This place is my music therapy!!! Drink specials are great. Bar staff and security are very respectful. Love this place!!! 🍻😀
Cant say I really hate a business but holly cow this place comes close. Rude staff and cheap over served clientele just makes this a spot to avoid. Looking just to get plastered for Pennys on the dollar while getting sub par service then this spot wins the award. This place is just a recipe for something horrible to happen.
Great place to hang out with friends specially on a Thursday or Sunday night, drinks are less then 2dollars. You do have to be there before 11:30 if you want to avoid the long line. Which is why I give it 4 stars
I just got back from the Alamo Bowl and this place was directly right behind the property I was staying so I decided to grab a beer, got inside and the bartender took my order for a beer and then said he was refusing to serve me because he said I was struggling with my cash, I was just counting out four ones for the beer, either he had a problem with me being 50 or me wearing an OU shirt, but I was far from being impared, bar across the street had no problems with serving me.
Fun spot with nice dance floor inside. My favorite area is the patio outside though. Comfortable picnic table seating and large enough area it never feels crowded.
Drinks and atmosphere were great music was great and the staff were friendly. Only 2 small cons were the size of dance floor and bathrooms were a bit small and there was a little bit of a wait to order drinks but overall great place!
There was alot of people but this place was very fun. I enjoyed my self service was very fast got our drinks very fast and the crowd was very cool i love it here and i recommended this place for a great night out and to get oit of the house no cover and great drink specials so the only thing the parking is limited so come early lol thanks for your time
Great place good music fun place
A bunch of people were harassing our group, throwing drinks and pushing us. The bar decided to kick us out and let them stay. Will never go back they are resist and sexist.
Great strip of bars here. BM had a young/fun crowd, 9 shots were under $30, good music and dance floor inside with a laid back patio.
The 80s Night DJs are the best! It does sometimes get uncomfortably crowded, especially on holiday weekends, but the staff are helpful and keep the drunks, fighters and creeps on lockdown.
If you are patient and Genoese and not acting as a baligerant fool, you will be giving the same courtesy back, always a fun time here and you can not beat the free cover and the mixed crowed this place brings in!!! I would say this is a definite college, military, and business spot!!! That is how welcoming this place is!!!
Its alright, the bartender was in such a rush and glass was so full of ice that when he was pouring the alcohol it was splashing out of the cup or completely missing the cup. Good thing it was $0.75 drink night
Great club with a great atmosphere. Use their social media to find out what theme night they have going on when you come by. Always a good crowd, but can get crowded at times.
