Excellent food and friendly service. We ordered online for carry-out, as we live an hour away. We ordered a large variety of sides, meats, catfish, and appetizers. The order was ready on time and was brought out by a very friendly young woman who even offered to help me get everything to my car. The whole family enjoyed sampling all the tasty food. So delicious! Everything was so good but my favorite was the ribs! The fried green tomatoes and fried okra are a must. Do not skip the greens or the dressing as they are phenomenal. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying the cobbler next time.
I’m going to start this off by saying, I am not a fan of BBQ. I never crave it, I’m typically pretty reluctant to try new BBQ places... but this place is amazing. From the moment you walk in, your filled with smiling faces, and the aroma of the BBQ cooking. I feel like I walked into a family members house, the staff is super friendly, food is amazing, entertainment is top of the line and drinks are SUPER creative, beautiful presentation and taste terrific.Dee made us feel like we’re part of the family, as did our waiter and the live entertainment. The entertainment took time to learn our names and even remembered them. All around fantastic joint to bring to South Elgin! 10/10 recommended Dee’s Place 💕
Great food, culture, music was amazing, clean and very friendly. I absolutely love their customer service. I originally booked for the comedy show that I assume take place on Fridays. I took my mom for her birthday and she absolutely enjoyed herself. Its been hard finding fun things to do In a Pandemic but I honestly felt right at home. I traveled about one hour for this place and Ill do it again.Check out Seestandup.com for booking for comedy.
Dee’s Place in South Elgin is a beautiful, clean, and spacious environment. The young lady that took my order was very pleasant, patient and helpful. She explained the timeline and was right on target with the prep time. Food was good and worthy of praise. Can’t wait to dine in and catch the ambiance of the space and the music. Thanks for a great experience!!
Wow. a hidden gem on Randall rd. excellently executed decor. rustic farmhouse meets Chicago tavern. bar area is raised and overlooks the main dining area. small little alcove for music. staff were friendly and considerate from start to finish. menu could be arranged a little simpler, its slightly confusing for first timer. the prices are reasonable, especially considering the portion size. meats: fried chicken was good, pork ribs were legit. short beef ribs were just ok. sides: potatoes and gravy good, coleslaw excellent (apple cider style but creamy with white raisins... so good), Mac and cheese is a pass, yams were absolutely candy. overall, definitely recommend. we will be back
Talk about a hidden gem!!!! This place is an absolute find.....the owners were great, the place itself was great, with a great atmosphere, and the food my guy.....the food was so good that mid-way through the meal I was already planning the next trip in my head....lbvs The oxtails were outstanding with the red beans and rice. The beef ribs were also banging (my wife got those but of course I went in).....if you take my advice and go here, there will be plenty of time to thank me later!!!!!
My experience here with the live Sunday jazz band was an unexpected treat. The fresh fried chicken flavoring along with collard greens I chose were a classic combination that proved very satisfying. The chocolate cake is a must to complete the course even if your take the rest home. The friendly and professional staff were accommodating to my needs and made it easy for me to add on extra sides to my order. Overall, a wonderful place to eat southern American food when choosing from your foodie toolkit!
Found this location after coming out of town to visit family hours away from my home and loved the atmosphere and looking at all the black history on the wall. They even had a live band playing there and they were very cool and even interacted with the crowd. The band was really the highlight of the night. Price is a little high for what we had ordered. The beef ribs were not really meaty at all but full of fat for that price. The candied yams that were filled to the top of the bowl, were more or less just cinnamon and not candied at all. The jambalaya which was partially filled in the bowl, had no sausage just a spicy rice dish. The potato salad, which also was partially filled was just ok, and the greens that was filled to the top, were surprisingly decent. Just raised and eyebrow and felt a little off to feel like your in a black owned establishment but see no one black in the kitchen or serving, just the band. May try again.
Im happy to see a change in food selections, out in this grand ole land of Suburbia 😊 For someone that battles with Hypertension and Diabetes .....I for one am glad the food isnt over seasoned but proportionate to taste. Thank for considering opening out this way...otherwise Id be on the highway heading to Chicago as usual.
Just left Dee’s . We were literally there for an hour and a half at our table . At an hour and 20 min we were approached . The employee stated I bought you corn bread . Food coming soon. Quotes us 5-7 minutes for food . Apologizes says it’s his fault . 4 of us at the table 2 small squares of cornbread that he “ bought “ for us . Obviously the food never came at 10 minutes . It was a very awkward experience . They were not busy . The had plenty of help in the back Our husbands had time to go next door and gamble and come back . Still no food . Awkward … weird and not going back . I guess snackies at home it is
I had the fried chicken, yams, and macaroni. The best thing of it all was the fried chicken. My sides were barely warm when I received them so I asked for them to be warmed up. I was brought new sides, but the macaroni ended up being watery and the yams were not cooked all the way. I think they could improve on the side dishes to make it taste more like soul food. The establishment was clean and spacious. Our waitress was so nice and attentive, especially being the only one.
The food is awesome and the staff were very friendly. Beautiful bar and great music. The house wine made by a local brewery is amazing a must try. Definitely go check them out if your looking for some real home cooked soul food. Thanks for having us guys we will definitely be back.Stance down Low summer nights pre meet car show!
Finally had the chance to check Dee’s place out after hearing from multiple people about how delicious their food is. Folks, I ordered it two days in a row now. The fried chicken is absolutely delicious and fresh. So juicy without being completely drenched in coating and grease. The sides are made with absolute love and I recommend the greens and the jambalaya rice. Rib tips excellent as well as the fried catfish. Even from takeout the hostess was very pleasant and welcoming. Love to support local and Dee’s has my support.
When I say that we ate at Dees Place, I mean we felt like we were in Dees home, sitting at her table, chatting with her as we enjoyed incredible food right from her kitchen. Her place is warm and welcoming. Her staff, especially her manager Gabi, was more than attentive. Our server Raynard was inviting, knowledgeable about the menu, and efficient. The food, oh my, the food is everything you hope for in down-home cooking. We sampled the ribs, the fried chicken, and the jerk catfish along with 6 different sides. We were delighted at every turn. Everything was piping hot and seasoned deliciously. But the icing on the cake (the delectable, homemade, chocolate layered cake that we had for dessert) was Dees herself. She made us feel right at home. We will be stopping by on a regular basis to enjoy the live Jazz and Blues, to have a home-cooked meal, and to just hang out at Dees Place.
Went there last night and was totally blown away by everything! The live music was soulful, interactive, and amazing! The food was delicious and you felt the love in every bite! They also had homemade cake, made by the owner herself, Dee! The ambiance was soulful and I felt at home. The highlight of the night was when the owner, Dee, made it a point to talk to everyone to ensure we were having a good time! I really felt like I was at a family reunion and we enjoyed every bit. We made plans to go elsewhere afterwards but ended up staying here for hours! We are so happy to have found this place and will definitely be back again!
Incredible soul food. Ive gotten carry outs from Dees Place twice, and I had the fried chicken dinner on both occasions. Best fried chicken in the area hands down. The sides and desserts were delicious as well (mac n cheese, candied yams, cole slaw, banana pudding, and peach cobbler). Im excited to return and work my way through the menu!
Authentic soul food! Especially the beef short ribs, braised to perfection! Oh! Get the shrimp appetizer! Lightly breaded perfectly cooked and the dipping sauce w just enough of a bite not too hot. Great service. And... the live music was crazy good! Three guys who are extremely talented! If you’re looking for something comforting and down home don’t missed out! This area needs this place!
Our time spent at Dee’s Place yesterday was time well spent. A wonderful experience. The food was incredible and very clearly made with love. The restaurant itself was beautiful to look at and a wonderful ode to some of the world’s greatest entertainers (love to see Moms Mabley!) And the service was exceptional. Dee greeted us at the door and went out of her way to ensure we had the best experience. And we did. Thanks to her, Aileen, and all the brilliant chefs, we left with full bellies and happy hearts. We can’t wait to come back for more.
We went to Dee’s place last night. Food was excellent!! The fried chicken is amazing. The coleslaw was the best I’ve ever had. Absolutely fantastic fried shrimp!! The only issue we had is they didn’t have any beer on tap. We would have stayed longer had they had some good beer. That was unfortunate. But if you don’t mind that, you will love the place! We will definitely go again for the food! I would have given it 5 stars, however, because of the bar I couldn’t.
Had a wonderful experience at Dee’s Place. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had, great ribs, shrimp and grits. The owner personally came to our table and the entire staff was welcoming and attentive. Great food and atmosphere. I highly recommend. Can’t wait to go back for another meal!
I Loved this place!!!! Dees Place!! Love the live music, the food was great also!! I plan on coming back for Karaoke, Drag, and Comedy night...Our Server Vince was pretty awesome with our orders!! Come check it out for yourself!! I really enjoyed it and I believe you will too!!! My friend and I were looking for someplace different to just eat and chat!! We hit the jackpot coming here!!
Beautiful place with open floor plan. Wonderful service and food. The bartender makes great cocktails and the food is just yummy! I had a combo and shared with my bf. It was just perfect, especially with the weekly Sunday live jazz music from the best Dawi Williams and friends playing beautiful music. Its awesome for a date night or family outing. They also have outdoor seating.
I ama cook myself I was very disappointed with my whole meal my daughter said that it was the worst fried chicken she ever had I went just for the Oxtails the dressing is stuffing instead of dressing the jerk chicken was very dry the red beans and rice was very plain the rib tips taste like they were boiled instead of barbecued the catfish was good. And I enjoy the live band but other than that I will never go there again
Service was great and food was fresh. Fried chicken, hot links were good. Jerk chicken was dry. The sides were very bland. Macaroni and cheese, greens, mashed potatoes were all bland. Red beans and rice was soupy and watery. Dont forget the awful peach cobbler. $7 was another waste. Ordered to go. Warmed it later, its a bowl full of biscuits, wet down with peach juice it seems. No flavor, sugar, 2 dried up peaches. Save the cornbread...There wasnt much soul in the food. Waste of money and time.
Loved the food! Had jerk chicken, jambalaya rice and Cole slaw. Super tasty. My husband had the pork ribs and catfish. Tried everything and cannot wait to go back for the weekend jazz and blues music.
Went there with my wife Saturday for dinner. First off, My old fashioned was made perfectly. The food was delicious, especially the ribs and fried chicken! Staff was pleasant and blues band topped it off. Overall good experience and will be definitely going back!
I went in with a couple friends not knowing what to expect. Man, was I blown away. I was greeted with a warm welcome and seated right away. I ordered the ribs and jerk chicken. Let me tell you, some of the best Ive ever had! I will definitely go back to try the other mouth-watering options they have and for the at-home feel atmosphere!
I went to try this place out. The food was okay. The chicken is good, the hot wings were very good. The greens were ok. The alligator was ok, no real spice to it. Catfish nuggets very good. Jambalaya tasted fresh, but had a different taste than what I expected. I bought jerk chicken, I have not tried it yet. As with fried foods, it was oily . Their customer service was wonderful. I had a small issue that was handled right away and to my appreciation
What a gem in South Elgin. Found out about the restaurant via social media, and was not disappointed. Truly enjoyed the evening. We were entertained with great live music and presented with a fantastic food and drink menu. Our meals were delicious !!! The ownership and staff went out of their way to ensure every guest had a great experience. Would definitely recommend, and looking forward to another visit !!!
The owner and manager at Dee’s Place have regained my trust by making themselves available to immediately resolve a previous entree and service issue on the spot! All the food and drinks my family and I ordered were absolutely scrumptious. The meal portions were spot on!We have made Dee’s Place our friends and family members our number one place for dining and entertainment. From the receptionist, to the waitress, to bartender, to manager, and of course the chef makes for an awesome dinning experience. It’s reassuring to know that the owner is a chef and makes sure all his recipes are cooked to perfection! He is very personable and carefully monitors every detail of his restaurants food preparation, delicious entrees, wonderful cocktails, and personable servers. My family and I love Dee’s Place fabulous entertainment from Karaoke, talented featured vocal artists, live band playing jazz and blues, and comedians are a real treat weekly.Look no further for live concert entertainment included with Dee’s Place delicious soul food!
Staff was attentive, food was tasty and very generous portions. Seemed a tad pricey but considering we had free live entertainment, it was all worth it in the end. Be prepared to need a carryout. The Shrimp and Chicken (fried and jerk) was phenomenal!
Great bbq joint. Large portion sizes. Had back ribs but they were a bit cold. We had a large party so it seemed like it was waiting under heat lamps waiting for the rest of the food to be serve. Would be 5 stars if it wasn’t for the serving temp.
Opening night was not that impressive but they are just starting. We ordered ahead and were told 45 min. Our order wasnt not ready for about 1 hr and 7 minutes. Then forgot some desserts, side, and one of our dinners but hey we expected maybe a little mess up since they just opened. For the price we paid I think the food should have been way better. The food I feel was hit or miss. Greens could have cooked longer. Yams were good. Mac n cheese was good. Cornbread good. Spaghetti was too dry. Banana pudding yummy. Cobbler had 3 peaches and a lot of dough. That was gross. My mom didnt even like it and that stuff was like 7bucks a cup. We spent over $100 and I was very disappointed. Id rather drive all the way to the city and pay less for my food and have way better flavors and be satisfied.
(DONT WASTE YOUR TIME- DO NOT GO- sycamore has better chicken / BBQ) When Dees opened we were very excited as many were. We tried it the first weekend it had opened and they messed up our entire order and the food was very bland and dry. We figured it was because they were brand new and still finding there rhythm.Fast forward - we tried Dees again over the weekend again very excited! We ordered the famous chicken had corn bread Coleslaw and Mac & cheese. Not only did we wait almost an hour for our food. We were extremely disappointed after the first bite. The chicken was extremely dry and had no flavor - pop eyes and KFC sadly do chicken better (this is how low the chicken was. Not stating I prefer these places) the Mac & cheese looked amazing topped with melted cheese. Again super bland - Looked like it should have a ton of packed flavor but nothing just bleh. The coleslaw was okay probably the best thing we had considering not many options left but still I could run to jewel for better flavored slaw. The corn bread is unique (jalapeño and cheese) but ours was sadly very dry and tasted like it had been sitting out awhile or maybe had been reheated? No flavor of jalapeño just bland dry corn bread. Our server I truly felt bad for. She was running the floor herself it wasn’t extremely busy but you could tell she was pre occupied and kept forgetting items and drinks. When it came to the menu she didn’t have any preferences or thoughts about anything as if she had never tried anything.. as well as she wasn’t sure of items she had (hot sauce etc) we were extremely unsatisfied and after looking at the reviews it seems like many other people were as well. We will not be going back and sadly will not be talking up this business. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND DO NOT GO. you can find better chicken / BBQ in sycamore area! Sadly I am forced to give one star but would prefer 0.
Well the food was fresh , a bit salty for my taste. Its not your grandma cooking I had the shrimp, catfish nuggets. It was okay a bit salty. The candied yams was watery and the mac had no flavor or cheese consistency. The atmosphere was nice . Needs a better cook
First I will give praise where praise is due, the music was awesome a little loud for a date night scenario it was hard to hear my date for the night and we were at the same table. Food I believe is a hit and miss I guess it depends on what you expect from certain things, what I mean is this the fried green tomatoes were covered in a batter not a corn meal breaded which is very typical but Mayne they were trying a new recipe to keep up with the crowd dont know but like I said just not what was expected. I tried the black eye peas and rice the texture was great but just needed a little seasoning in my opinion I fixed it with a pack and half of salt and I was good to go. Now one of my biggest issues was with the whole catfish I dont do filets if a whole fish is an option but it wasnt cooked enough for this old soul. And Im not just nit picking it was just really mushy the outside was crispy but the inside was really mushy I even ate half my tail like I used to when I was a kid to again maybe just a hit and miss thing. Now I will say that that doggone potato salad I will definitely be back for a tub of that. That taste like grandma made that joint 1000 stars for that honestly. And my wife seemed to enjoy that fried chicken because outnofneverything on her plate it was the only thing she didnt offer me some of. Service was a hit and miss then I found out it was our servers 2nd night in any restaurant so I immediately forgave her for all the mistakes by not bringing them up in this post. But overall it is a good spot I would definitely hang out there listen to music oh and drink a bunch of those long Islands shout out to the bartender, but by the hustle I seen in her she was probably floor manager which if anybody who has worked in the industry would know you might need a bartender and you might need a manager but a bartender floor manager is always asking for problems in the long run. So with all this I would go back and eat hella potato salad and fried chicken, and drink a tub of long Island and listen to the band they were killing and maybe just ask for a table in the other room so it wont be so loud.
Absolutely amazing food! Food is delicious, a lot of variety on the menu! Food always comes out fresh and delicious. Each bite is full of flavor. So many different drink options, each one is crafty and creative. Dees place has live entertainment Thursday-Sunday! Something different everyday. So if youre looking for dinner and some entertainment this is defiantly the place to go!P.S. Dees Chocolate Cake is to die for!
Generous portions of very good food - how can you go wrong? If you get the chance, go on a Saturday night for the live music. And the fried chicken is as good as advertised. I will definitely be back to try more of their menu.
Was craving some soul food and found this establishment online so decided to try them out. Arrived at about 4:50pm on a Saturday. Only one other group was here at this time. At 5:20 we received menus and around 5:40 we had our order taken. We recieved our food at about 6:10pm only to be served semi warm not hot very dry ribs, tasteless mac and cheese dry hard cornbread and dry fried chicken. Im not one to leave reviews and I understood the wait, considering everything that is going on in the world currently. But the cold/ dry dishes were unacceptable.
The food is excellent! I did carryout and I did a platter with ribs, fried chicken and shrimp. They were all great! I had there mac and cheese as I side and I loved it. I also had the jambalaya rice, it was awesome!
This place is awesome!! Great barbecue 😋... takes a lot for me to write a review but if you want to try something different try this place. Everything I ate was 5 stars...BBQ Chicken, potato salad, spaghetti, peach cobbler. Wow!! You cant keep me away from here now I know what kind of food is here!! Thanks so much for the wonderful dinner!!
When I first heard of Dee’s place opening up nearby I was so excited. My husband and I ordered roughly $60 worth of food so we could try a variety. At first glance picking up, the employees seemed really hostile and not friendly at all. But we were still eager to try the food. We tried it, it wasn’t good. The only thing I somewhat liked was the peach cobbler but that was it, everything else tasted bland. Aside from the food, I will never give this place my business again after seeing how their owner is extremely unprofessional in replying to reviews. Good luck though, there’s much better places in the area.
Wow. Incredible. The Jerk Chicken and Smothered Fries are great. We also shared a fried Oreo. The service was great. We are headed to their South Elgin restaurant. We were eat at the Food Truck location that was parked at D&G Brewery. Definitely check them out.
Some may not understand what Im about to say but when I tell you someone put they foot in my food....whew!!! Best darn soul food Ive had in a very very very long time. The atmosphere of this place is AMAZING! There is no way that this is my first and last visit. This is on my list for places to treat myself. If you want something good that would just hit that spot that you didnt know needed to be hit. Stop on by and get a big plate of what ever you desire. I will warn you though if he has on the Eddie and Gerald Levert Pandora station youre going to be jamming so much that you might not eat. Lol
Yum!!! Run, dont walk to Dees. They make you feel like family when you walk in the door. We had fried chicken, ribs, greens, black eyed peas, cornbread, beef short ribs, and more!! We have plenty of food left for another meal and ordered our dessert to go! We sat outside and it was nice to hear the live music from inside.Seriously.....go to Dees! Thank you for a great night!
So disappointed.. scenery and the band was very nice.Restaurant was very clean. We waited two hours for our food. The food WAS NOT SOUL FOOD. There was nothing soul food about it. Mac and cheese was watery. The ribs were cold. The greens had no season to it. I dont think this place know what seasons is,the food was bland!! I would never come back to this place its a fraud of southern food! Come on the location is in South elgin!! Should of known!!
Came in for the first time today. Will be back often. Drinks were made well and the food reminded me of soul food from the south. One the the best old fashions Ive had in a long time. Cat fish was fried perfectly and you can tell their mac n cheese aint from a box!
A Caribbean Feast! Check this place out. We had outstanding jerk chicken and the most flavorful moist fried chicken with crunchy skin. The sides of jambalaya rice was bursting with flavor. If you closed your eyes and had a rum cocktail you will be convinced you are right on a Caribbean island beach. Totally yummy!
Advertised as a soul food restaurant. They have a decent variety of soul food menu items. We ordered the bone-in catfish, catfish nuggets, rib tips, fried green tomatoes, fried okra, & sweet potatoes. The food was well prepared & very tasty, however, some soul food lovers may need a few more familiar spices for that true soul food experience.
Very expensive for the quality of the food not to be up to part. Mac n cheese had too much sour cream in it. The greens taste like glory greens out the can. The cornbread had an awful twist. Not understanding how a soul food resteraunt messes up cornbread. Very disrespectful to the culture. Lastly was charged three dollars for a can of coke I never received. Ill stick to Priscillas.
I had smothered pork chops and it was ok. Meat was really tough. Corn on the cob looked like something out of freezer section of grocery store. Potato salad was very good. Young lady who waited on me was sweet and very attentive. Not what I expected from a place that served soul food. No greens at all...very strange.
The food was not as good as I thought it would be. I had the 1pc. fryed cat fish, it was fryed too heard and the Mac.& cheese was dry, Cornbread Too thick. I also had The black eye peas and rice that was ok. I dont think you get much for the price that you pay and the food was not that good.
Excellent southern style food. The gravy on the chicken wasnt quite what we expected for southern style. Ribs are awesome and so are all of the sides. Definitely come back again.
Called to make reservations for a birthday celebration. The call taker, Eileen was super nice. Got to the restaurant and was greeted by Eileen. We ordered many items from the menu: fried chicken, jerk catfish, ribs, fried catfish, gater bites, jambalaya rice, candied yams, mashed potatoes, greens, jalepeno cornbread, Salad, Mac and cheese, hot links, fried green tomatoes, shrimp, and stuffing. The waitress, guess who..... Eileen was very patient with us as we ordered. Eileen smiled throughout. Eileen even threw in a complimentary dessert for the birthday girl. The owner, Dee personally greeted us and ensured we were happy with everything. I am looking forward to returning on a night with live music. Dee, keep doing what youre doing! BTW, the rum punch was very good too!
Establishment was very nice, live blues music was also. But the service was not good and the food took way too long. Our kids got it long before we did so by the time we finally got ours they were ready to go. Food was okay, definitely not impressed nor did it feel like soul food. Way overpriced for what we got
Ive been dying to try this place waiting for good ribs hoping they were good praying to the good Lord and man I hit a grand slam home run.Rib tip sampler is a ton of ribs ask for extra sauce.Tender juicy great hint of smoke but not overdoneKudos I hope this place stays in business and everybody starts coming here interior looked awesome one of the cleanest nicest restaurants that opened on Randall Ive seen
Placed an order with an estimated hour delivery window. About 30 minutes later, it was delayed an additional 40 minutes. Was willing to wait a little more hoping may still not take too much longer and then was delayed again for another 20-30 minutes. What a waste of time trying to wait for this restaurant to make your food. Would have been nice if they called if they knew they were so backed up and not able to get true food to the customer on time. Instead wasted over an hour waiting for something that they kept delaying with no reason.
The place is beautifulBEAUTIFUL ppl environment is lovely its just soooo expensive. The drinks are totally over price n you cant taste the liquor.. The food is totally over price. I had fried okra thats 7.99 with 8 BIG piece of okra cook whole n wasnt done at all it was too hard.. The waitress over charge us for our drinks. He tried to argue with us when were totally knew how many drinks we had n he contradict himself as well. He kept saying we order 3 drinks but why you charge us 5 drinks. It didnt make since.. Dont get me wrong its a beautiful environment but a lil things have to be change.. Thanks again Dees Place. We need a spot out here like yours..
The beef ribs are a Symphony of flavors. The potatoes and mac and cheese. An orchestra of delights. And their banana pudding is by far one of my favorites in the area. All around a great meal with a solid atmosphere and a wonderful and polite staff
Food is amazing! And so is the service!!Smothered chicken has the best gravy. And this mac n cheese!!! TO DIE FOR!!But of course you cant go wrong with the ribs. You will not leave unhappy or hungry!Ps, enjoy yourself with a razzy jazzy mule!🍹😊
Absolutely incredible. The fried chicken melts in your mouth. The jambalaya rice I’d also a very great side. You can count the amount of flavors in each bite. Definitely would recommended
Went with a few friends to eat on a Friday afternoon. Man was I impressed with the warm greeting I recurved. I was also amazed at the live comedy show that was going on. If it couldn’t get any better the food was so delicious and fresh. I watched them make it fresh on their bbq pit. Will defiantly go back.
This place is truly unique. I came here with my girlfriend for the first time after being followed by them on Instagram. First word that comes to mind when walking in is “authentic”. Real people, real atmosphere, and real good food. Live entertainment too. Real funny comedians and the stylings of a “DJ Moe”. I had their BBQ ribs and the chocolate cake for dessert. Needless to say, they beat my expectations, so when I come back, I’m going for the fried chicken that was on everyone’s recommendation list.Thank you for a great night Dee!
UPDATE: Another example of poor customer service. Apparently the owner doesnt understand that this platform is for people to express their opinions about their experience. Look at the scathing reply they left me for voicing my opinion below. A professional restauranteur is intelligent enough to understand that some people will like their food and others will not. Most professional restaurant owners reply Im sorry you didnt enjoy your experience....hope that youll give us another try and accept a complimentary appetizer. However, this owner tells me 1. I think Im an expert 2. My family didnt prepare food the way their family did (this is NOT a family thing but rather a good soul food thing). 3. Tells me if you dont like it dont come back. 4. Were here to stay (Oooh how I wish I had the authority to shut your establishment down but since I dont why make this asinine statement).5. I talked s___t in my review. This is the poorest example I have ever seen of customer service from a restaurant. You nor your business will ever prosper, you super-sensative poor excuse of a restaurant owner!!!!FULL RESTAURANT REVIEW:It astounds me how so many individuals have rated this restaurant so highly. I actually feel sorry for these individuals because apparently they are captivated by the term soul food and delusional enough to think that as a result of visiting this restaurant and eating this food they are somehow transported to a southern town in which they are engaging in an authentic cultural experience. Some friends and I ordered various dishes today. As usual, we all sampled one anothers dishes. Here are my personal ratings:Fried green tomatoes, D (BLAND, apparently no salt was sprinkled on the tomatoes before coating them in the tempura batter in which they were fried. Tempura wasnt seasoned. Also, anyone who TRULY KNOWS soul food knows that FGTs should be coated in a cornmeal breading--I was thoroughly disappointed)Fried chicken, C- (looked pretty but flavor was mediocre and it was lacking the crunch we all crave when biting into fried chicken)Fried catfish filet, D (looked pretty but it appeared to be a frozen, not fresh, filet which left an unpleasant taste in my mouth)Jalapeno cornbread, B (tasty but dense in texture)Potato salad, D- (watery and warm--wondered how long it had been sitting, not a good flavor)Black eyed peas, C (would have given a B for the flavor except they placed a coating of the peas over a multitude of cooked white rice; the container consisted of 25% black eyed peas and 75% rice)Red beans and rice, D- (tasteless, 25% red beans and 75% white rice)Greens, F (NO flavor whatsoever)Peach cobbler, F (could see from the container that there were what appeared to be small cookie fragments in lieu of actual crust; opened the container and there was a gelatinous, inedible glob of something I wouldnt even serve an enemy--TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY)Now, lets talk customer service. Id ordered and picked up the food for everyone and paid $55, plus I left a $5 gratuity. I was called when my order was ready and informed the young lady who benefited from my $5 tip that I was right outside. She told me to come in. It was a bit rainy out, Id left a $5 tip for a carryout order, yet she couldnt walk my order out to my car for me???? Most restaurants now offer curbside pickup. Even if they dont offer curbside pickup, some restaurant employees have great customer service skills to the point that if they see you sitting in your car outside of the restaurant (or you tell them you are right outside) they will bring your food to your car--Ive actually experienced this.Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone I know since I feel that what I ordered was both a complete waste of money and calories.
I loved the vibe as soon as i walked in! Their drinks are on point and their food is out of this world! When you walk in youre greeted with such welcoming staff. It almost feels like family! I will definately recommend to all my friends and family! Music 10/10. Food 10/10. Drinks 10/10. Customer service 10/10.
The mash potatoes weren’t that good as well as the Mac n cheese. I was really excited to come and eat here and my first bites really disappointed me on all the hype. But... the chicken is good. The meats should only be bought from here. Go to Popeyes for some better Mac n cheese and potatoes
We ordered a wide array of things tonight. None of which were good. The ribs were tough, the catfish full of bones (my husband gave up after 2 bites), the candied yams were inedible, the mashed potatoes had no flavor and the wings were soggy. Really disappointing.
I ain’t gonna lie bro don’t come here. The food was awful for me and when I received my food the plate was painfully hot on the sides and some parts on the outside where way hotter than the middle usually meaning that the food was microwaved. I went there with 2 of my buddies and we all agreed it was the worst restaurant we have been in. Maybe we just came in on a bad day or something which is what I’m hoping for since the place looks really nice. But definitely would not be eating there anytime soon (now I wanna give a critique on all the food I ate there 1. Corn bread was dry and had little flavor couldn’t finish it. 2.mash potatoes was the best thing for me but could use a lot more stuff before it becomes a good mash potatoes 3. Pork chop with gravy was disgusting, it was basically just grease the “gravy” was horrible and genuinely just tasted like grease.the bbq tips where decent but nothing special and could use more seasoning on the meat. Alligator was okay but nothing special again. Everything was very disappointing would not recommend anyone to eat there
This is my second visit so Insteadoc the fib tips I tried the chicken w greens and yams. All was awesome except the thigh piece of chicken was a bit undercooked for chicken and the cornbread had too much jiffy mix. Prices are just right. I planonreturning on Friday and will check out the entertainment and another dish. Thumbs up
Awesome drinks and people! I had a blueberry mule and rum punch. We tried everything! Fried shrimp, fried chicken and ribs were kids favorite!
The food is great. But when we got home we saw that they had forgotten to give us everything we ordered. We live a half hour away so couldnt easily go back to get the rest of our food. So if you order it to go check it while you are there.
Gotta say it’s a good place to hang out and enjoy food. Good amtmosphere surrounding. Good jazz for those who like it. Good chicken as well and bbq ribs a great outstanding taste definitely recommend! Our special thanks to dee the restaurant owner 👌
Good appetizers we had three for $25 and it blows up fried okra fried green tomatoes and rib tips excellent couple of good margaritas and my friend had though sweet teas something with vodka and she liked it
Decided to try this restaurant on Saturday and Im glad I did, the food was outstanding and they give you a great amount of it at a good price, everyone was nice, place was clean, and Dee herself came to introduce herself. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!Shawnmarie
The food was great, the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I met the owner, she was very passionate about her product and stuck to her word. I highly recommend this restaurant. I wish this company the best of luck, i know they will do great in this area.
Got contact-free delivery during Coronavirus. Outstanding fried chicken, excellent ribs, delicious sides. Very friendly over the phone, too! Will be ordering from then again, soon!
Phone number is disconnected and there is no online menu or ordering. I tried to stop in..massive groups of people and no one is wearing a mask. No thank you.Update: clearly the owner is neither experienced or kind if they tell people to get a life for leaving an honest review instead of addressing the issues. Im sorry for your troubles Im sure its not easy starting a restaurant at the moment. Please, for the safety of our community, have your staff wear masks when interacting with customers. Best of luck.
Nice establishment but service was horrible, food was horrible as well as its presentation. Spent $30 in the restaurant and dont know why..feels like Ive been robbed. To advertise this food as soul food, the owner should be ashamed.Dear owner, throw the whole kitchen away..its trash. Come back to the south and get your taste buds together. D*** shame.
Went there to dine in, the food was great seasoned well and fresh. Ordered in, the same exact meal. The food was raw, uncooked , order was completely wrong, and nothing was fresh. Called to let them know and the blamed GRUBHUB for the uncooked food. Lol
Amazing food, huge portions, friendly staff, owner is sweet as pie, and loved listening to everyone sing. Was nice to feel carefree and normal for a night with home cooked food!! And the FRIED GREEN TOMATOES?! Amazing!!!!!!
OMG, Comedy nights on Fridays is very very fine they use adult language so keep that in mind the bartender makes excellent drinks and staff is friendly the fried catfish is amazing the fried crawfish is wonderful I really enjoyed the cornbread and we can’t wait to return
Listen up my peeps! If you want GREAT BBQ and Soul Food, AWESOME COCKTAILS AND DESSERTS. Make your way to Dees Place in South Elgin. The food and hospitality is AWESOME and you will not be disappointed!!!
We ordered catfish, fried chicken, jerk chicken and a whole bunch of sides. It was Good!! A great change of pace. We will definitely be back!
Food is amazing, fresh, juicy, finger licking, saliva dripping chicken. Excellent service and didn’t have to wait long for that delicious chicken. I’d highly recommend everyone stop by and check them out. Order the chicken
Such a cool vibe. Everyone was so friendly and made you feel like a big family. The drinks were so good and well thought out. The food was really good and tasted like home cooking. The cornbread was the only thing that could use some tweaking...but everything else was delicious!
Great food, entertainment and staff. Every time weve visited Dees place we have LOVED the experience. The soulfood is delicious and the staff always friendly and upbeat.
HOLY COW... This place is phenomenal. The fried catfish, fried chicken, Mac & cheese, yams, and banana putting was out of this world. I’m currently writing this as I’m eating, it was THAT GOOD.
The food was plentiful, cooked to perfection. The music was great, service was equally outstanding. We are so lucky to have this gem so close to home.
This place was my first introduction to soul food and let me tell you.... it doesn’t disappoint. Brandon has made done a great job with the place and definitely thankful it’s part of the neighborhood! Having weekly visits for my soul fix
Had a wonderful dinner. The Owner Dee talked to us. She is an awesome person. The beef ribs are excellent
Service is good, jerk chicken very tasty. The sides I give two thumbs down:Spaghetti, yams, Mac&cheese...yuck!The peach cobbler tasted old.
The Owener Dee along with her staff were very polite. The food was full of flavor, it has been awhile since I had good food and friendly service from a restaurant.
Everything i had was supper delicious and can’t wait for this place to fully open because i was told they’ll have live music too. Glad to have some good flavors in the neighborhood
I had a great time. My wife and I came for our anniversary. The fried green tomatoes were the best. The jerk Chicken was awesome
Casual upscale Black Owned Soul Food Restaurant. The food is Awesome and Ambiance is elegant. Jazz brunch on Sunday!
I ordered the beef ribs they were kind of tough the macaroni and cheese has good flavor to it but its not cheesy the candy yams come out of a can and theyre horrible and the peach cobbler it had a lot of crust to it but no peach cobbler flavor if you get what Im saying I give it a two stars thats as far as I can go with it but to each is on great staff nice looking establishment lot of history on the walls
Awesome time! Really enjoyed the food. Staff was friendly, specially our waitresses, Rachel. Would recommend to anyone looking for quality and quantity.
Fun evening. Had drinks, food, watched NBA playoffs and saw a great comedy show hosted by Aaron Foster. This was my first visit. 👍
Amazing food, comfortable decor, and the staff were all very friendly. Recommend to anyone looks for amazing fall of the bone ribs 😍
Atmosphere is open stagged and the service was kind, considerate and polite. Oh, and the food was well prepared in Southern style, delicious!!
Just tried Dees for the first time, excellent! Had the fried chicken which was cooked perfectly. Looking forward to dining in to try some of their other dishes.
It was our first time at this establishment. From the moment we walked in.. we were acknowledged and seated. The atmosphere, energy, and music was fabulous. I will definitely be there again soon
Made error in bill, said theyd correct it but didnt. During time of pandemic wont say anything more. Would hate to see any establishment close. Just check your takeout order before you leave.
Well, I tried. Had Dees a few times in the past, its been decent. Called tonight, got hung up on once. Second time, waited for 10 minutes and decided to hang up. Apparently if you want to order to-go, find somewhere else.
There isnt a lick of soul in none of the food!! Cornbread like a brick. The ambiance is really nice but thats about it!! Very expensive and not worth the money.
Get the fried chicken and Mac and cheese Thank me later. The drinks are also on point. They have comedy shows on Fridays
Food was not good...chicken was dry as sand...greens had a gang of pepper ..i chocked instantly..cornbread was stiff as a board...yams tasted like they was canned nd they was not fully cooked.mac n cheese was so dryyy..i had to come home nd add milk...butter..velveta cheese and season...it def was not worth 50 bucks..my stomach still hurt...i was very dissappointed...the food was wasnt cooked with love nor soul..
We had a good time. On Thursday nights, they have a great DJ there for karaoke. It was fun!
I really enjoyed the beef ribs and the jazz music ,nice atmosphere,Ill be back, just make sure no one takes them Brothers off the Wall 💯
Its so sad this is a black own business with no black staff! All they want to attract are white and Mexican people! My Family will never eat there again!
Nothing tasted home made. Cornbread was dry & not fresh. Tasted like leftover from the day before.
Great good, good drinks, marvelous hospitality! The candied yams were particularly yummy, and the chocolate cake was excellent!!
The price I paid for one piece of catfish was over priced....I paid 18.00...the cornbread was dry with no taste...the yams was burned with no taste....you couldnt taste no brown sugar...the food was old and cold....I will not eat at this so called soulfood restaurant ever again....dont waste your time coming to Hoffman Estates IL...I will not be eating there or either of my friends or family....it was super over priced for one piece of meat....its no good...do not come to the suburbs...you will lose your business asap....taste your food before you send it out!!!
This food is over priced and Ive ate at alot of soul food spots and it was tasty but the prices were way to high 2 entrees and 2 deserts were well over 50.00 that is crazy the food aint worth 50 bucks ill stick to Priscillas were you can afford to eat
It was a wonderful and classy experience. Love the food and the entertainment was phenomenal. The owner was very friendly and professional. Definitely going back. 😃
Beautiful place and atmosphere. Food was delicious. Friday night comedy shows are our new date night
DEES PLACE IS A JOKE. THE FOOD IS ALWAY DRY AND OLD. YOU HAVE TO ORDER WHEN THEY OPEN. DUE TO THE FACT THE FOOD IS NOT FRESH. I ORDERED THE RIB TIP TWICE SPEND OVER 29.00. I GET THE FOOD OMG, DRY BOTH TIMES. THE FOOD WASNT HOT. IN VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THIS PLACE. THE FOOD IS GROSSLY OVER CHARGED. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO MY WORST ENEMY. WE ALL SHOULD VOTE THEM OUT OUR TOWN. WE WORK HARD FOR OUR MONEY. AND FOR THIS PLACE TO BE OVER PRICED AND NASTY. THEY HAVE TO GO. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE
Yum yum yum, their chicken is to die for and their ribs, mashed potatoes andmac n cheese are incredible. Glad that they open here.

I wished I lived closer. Everything I had was simply amazing. Great staff and service also. Definitely going back next time I am in town.
Place was horrible my family didnt like it chicken was dry spaghetti had way to much sugar dressing was awful wasnt even dressing this place is not a soul food place at all they brought us our food after waiting 35 minutes the sides werent on the correct plates and were also missing two sides bill came out to 58 dollars with no sort of correction on our food or anything dont go bad place period none of my children or wife liked it
