The brothel bits were excellent! Im glad I got the buffalo sauce on the side for the Buffalo mac and cheese because its a bit spicy. My husband had the burger, which he said was really good, but they kept forgetting to bring the condiments that he had asked for to go with the burger. They did look like they were pretty busy, which was surprising for a Tuesday night. But when we wanted our drinks refilled or needed something from the waitress, she was hard to find. The only thing that could have made the experience at the restaurant better would have been for them to either have more staff or smaller sections that the staff has to oversee.
The place is bursting w excitement, plenty of table. Good ambience for family get-together, dates & friends. Friendly waitress. Brisket mac & cheese is awesome. Montana is a cattle state. Best to order bison or beef, truly all beef. Burgers on pretzel bun is satisfying for the men in my company. Parking is free after 5 pm. Nice location in walking mall.
Oh my goodness do you love Pretzels, then be sure to stop in and order the gigantic Pretzel. We had had adults that shared it. If you order without salt, be sure to ask to have them add more butter. The 2nd night we ordered it without salt and it wasn’t as butter as the 1st pretzel with the salt and was a lil more dried out.
First off, this place does not serve brunch. Thats what we were looking for and Im now seeing that the pictures of the brunch menu are old. Our mistake. The ambiance was nice but nothing terribly special. They had two breakfast special options. I opted for the corned beef hash, which was uninspired. The hash itself seemed like it was made to use up leftovers, and the egg on top was extremely overcooked. The French dip was tasty. We were one of a couple tables who had to go find our server to get our check. Not at all attentive. We were disappointed with this experience.
Upbeat restaurant and bar. The wait staff is observant and on top of things. The food was decent. The club sandwich was really big, and the brisket nachos were shareable. Ive been here a few times now, and food is not consistent, unfortunately. The wings were great a few weeks back , and this past week, they came out cold. Sent back to warm them up and still cold.
We tried to sit outside or at a table near the door. There were ample tables. The waitress at the entry wouldn’t seat us. She went into a lengthy explanation that she had been too busy and couldn’t give us any menu items for at least 10 minutes. She shooed us away. It was very confusing. I had to find another woman to ask about tables. Her directions were unclear. She handed us off to a man in the back, in a darker area of the restaurant. We waited at least 10 minutes for food. I believe the servers should involve a manager for direction rather than pass off paying customers. The food was good. We had salad, a dip sandwich, a Rueben sandwich and sweet potato fries. I didn’t receive the Montana bun with the salad but I decided not to ask for it. Seems like a lively place for a meal with family or friends.
This is a winner. This place is a lively and historic spot that’s perfect for a night out. With its rustic charm, great staff, and delicious menu, you’ll feel right at home. The burgers and beers are standout favorites, and the vibrant atmosphere makes it great for catching up with friends or enjoying live music being played throughout the downtown. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, the Windbag Saloon offers a memorable and fun experience in downtown Helena!
Great food, service and ambience. Went for lunch and had an awesome Mule with the Mac & Cheese special (my husband wanted the M&C, which was creamy, cheesy and wonderful). I ordered a Rueben which was so yummy with fries. All the food was hot and drinks were cold. Able to watch Wimbledon since we are on the road and don’t have access right now.Highly recommend. Would have given a 4.5 for the atmosphere and probably a 5 when it’s party time!Jesse was a great server and remembered everything! Go have some great food and fun!
We went here multiple times while in Helena. Each time we tried something new and enjoyed it. I recommend trying their daily specials and getting their wings and drinks. Their mules are fantastic and their draft local beers are great too. The wings-Jamison bbq was one we kept going back to.I really enjoyed this spot and I loved the vibes and staff. The bar is a great place to sit and watch a game, but the restaurant in a nice catch up with friends. We will be back!
This building has been through so many restaurant iterations, Id say the current one is by far the BEST.I had a delicious Brisket Salad and super yummy grapefruit cocktail on Saturday night and they were both fantastic. The location is open, and airy, and simply perfect for Montana summers. Looking forward to a winter visit.
This place is cool and has nice people but in the last six months they have changed the food items they sell and the quality has SIGNIFICANTLY declined. Our bill was high, but the quality and flavor were extremely low.My chicken tenders were the spongy frozen ones and the green power meal my MIL ordered was a joke. Plain “grilled chicken” that looked boiled w no seasonings, steamed broccoli w no seasoningsAt that point eat at home. Season your stuff and save money.
Other than the extremely obnoxious party of more than 12 drunk people, our waitress was fantastic. The hostess was very prompt and even brought us all water. Our made many rounds to our table to ensure the food was good and we didnt need anything else. 10/10 will becoming back. I just wish for the courtesy of other diners this large group could have been seated elsewhere a bit more private or possibly patio seating?
Just.......yeah.......Service.Would be good to start with serving the people who come in and sit down.Service can start with a simple hello or a drink order being taken.Sad because I used to really enjoy this place.I cant tell you how anything tasted because we did not end up ordering. After a 15- 20 minute wait and little hope in sight, we decided to leave and ate somewhere else.
Nothing very good to report. Service slow and appeared somewhat disgruntled. Food served was barely warm so had to send back to the kitchen. The fries were at least hot the second time around...the burger was so-so. Fun spot and nice crowd but it could be so much more than barely basic. They did take our beers of the final tab to compensate. That was a nice gesture. Sorry Helena....
Kori and Haley(sp?) went above and beyond simply serving our food, they warm, friendly - and Haley shared her knowledge of the history of the building that used to house Big Dorothys brothel. The fish tacos were huge, cooked to that perfect stage of yummy where with every bite the fish flakes apart. Cant wait to return to try more menu items and enjoy great conversation!
Location and service were great, but what was phenomenal was the food! I did a little research before coming here and I had to try their gigantic pretzel! It really was huge… and absolutely delicious! It comes with two types of mustard and their house beer cheese. It was the only thing I ate and it was absolutely worth it!
I went there for a girls night out with two of my very dear friends. We split an order of the queso cheese nachos also in order of the spicy dill pickle chips they were amazing! 😋 It was more than enough for the three of us ladies. I was lucky enough to be able to take the dill pickle chips home for my lunch today. It was a nice treat to have for lunch. I will definitely be back!! If nothing else I will go and get me an order of the dill pickle chips to take home for me to have at home to eat. . My hat is off to everybody there they did an amazing job.
The service was good. My burger was really good. French fries not so much. I ordered the garlic parmesan fries and asked that they be crispy. They brought me regular fries and then took them back and threw some parmesan on them. I couldnt taste any garlic and they were far from crispy.
This place is Inconsistent at best. The first time visiting the windbag the food was delicious. Our waitress however was in a terrible mood. It seemed like the last place on earth she wanted to be and she didn’t smile even once. The second time we visited the hostess was very friendly and had great customer service but the food was served COLD and missing items we never received. The kitchen seems to struggle with prep and the food is different each time in quality and quantity. It’s a hit or miss unfortunately.
Super cool spot for drinks and food! The staff are very attentive even when slammed. Drinks are well made and there is a decent selection of beers on hand too. Food is EXCELLENT! The hardest thing is deciding what exactly to eat! Everything we had was amazing! The Adult macaroni and cheese comes in several varieties and was a big hit at our table.
Great food and great service. Their beer menu is impressive, I had a raspberry lager and it was amazing. I had a brisket salad and it was great too. Located at a perfect location to take a walk after food. Will be back for sure.
Miners Gold beer was good per partner. Fries were not a salty as desired. Vegan burger was good. Would like to see more vegan options.
This place seems like it is busy any day of the week during dinner time. The outdoor seating is pleasant on temperate days. The staff were friendly and my waitress was attentive to my questions about their gluten free options. They have access to gluten free buns, noodles, and no croutons on the salad options.
40 minute wait, not handicapped accessible as we have a 4yr old in a wheelchair, good thing we can pick him up. Place is really cool and food was excellent as it shows by the wait in line. They ran out of fish so we tried the Havana to Helena a Cuban which was really good, the wife tried the Gyro which was really good as well. We dont drink so we didnt try any beer. Sports bar type setting kids are welcome.
Came in today for lunch, started out great! Seated immediately but then waited about 10 minutes for the server which is no mind when I realized she not only had a section inside and outside. It can be very overwhelming when youre split like that. I ordered the Montana Mac and Cheese with garlic Parm fries and my friend ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. When the food came out I could tell that mine had been sitting in the window for a bit, which I can only assume while his chicken was finishing cooking. The Fries were ice cold and the Mac was as well. The fries were very much the bottom bowl fries with just a sprinkle of Parm on them. I told the waitress and she just grabbed the Mac and fries without asking if I wanted something different and assumed that I would eat the same thing. I didnt say anything I was just like ok then. I did get her a moment to say no need for fries. She brought back the mack and it was very evident that they just took the Mac and either put it in a new pan and heated it up that way or microwaved it, only saying because the noodles were then heavily over cooked. Like mush with cheese, bacon and chicken on them and no seasoning. I was hungry so I ate about a quarter of it. The waitress came back finally and said let me get you a box. I told her a box was not needed as this was just not good. She didnt ask why or anything just came back and said I took your fries off. Ok well the whole meal was not good. We still tipped her 20% because it was not her fault that she had a huge section and the kitchen couldnt cook. Overall not a great experience.
Loved learning about the history of the building! We stopped in for an after dinner drinks at the bar, which were delicious, and had wonderful service. Its a bit loud in there for me, but the adjoining bar is nice and quiet for a little break. We didnt have any food, but the pretzels looked enormous and delicious!
The server seemed overwhelmed she didnt even get us plates for starters, we had to eat out of the main plate. Cheese cruds weren’t nice, several of them were just shells without cheese and extremely oily. The chicken burger I ordered was so badly put together that the moment I picked it up all the veggies fell out of it, it had a toothpick that wasn’t put well. Food was good, the burger, the Mac and cheese just not happy with the service and attention to detail towards the food.
We were able to seat ourselves rather quickly. Our waitress arrived with menus and took our drink order. Drinks arrived and placed out order. My salad arrived ask the gal that brought the salad for silverware; my wife asked her if they had sweet and low. She did not know but would ask. She never came back. Finally our waitress showed up. Got silverware, sweet and low. Food arrived from same gal as previous. Ask her if our daughter could get a refill. She said yes, but never returned. Waitress arrived and got refill.Recommendation is to have support staff take ownership or work with wait staff to address customer issues or assistance.Besides that the food was great. I had the Mac n cheese burger, my wife had the BLT and my daughter had the original Mac and cheese. She said it was very good. My burger was still hot after I ate my salad. I thought I may have waited too long. We also ordered the funnel fries. Nice sweet and tasty desert.
We wanted some appetizers and a couple beverages. Omg. We ordered the chicken enchilada appetizer. It was so good. Staff was excellent. Weve struggled on Sundays to find a place open that has good appetizers. We did and well be back.
The food is absolutely delicious.I should have called a manager about this when I saw it at the beginning of April but I decided I just wouldnt go back, but now I just want to give a warning. There is a bartender or waitress that gave themselves a tip from my pick up order. I did not tip due to me just picking it up for lunch.I checked my banking app days later and saw a $20 and some change charge, when the total was $16 and some change when i picked it up and paid for it. This is not ok. Please do not give yourself a tip, its unethical.
Really enjoyed both the service and atmosphere. I felt that prices here are a little lower than comparable Helena restaurants. Well done!
Thank you ELLA!!!!!This is the first time in Montana, debating where to go is always a big problem , but the best decision was to eat and drink here. Above all, ELLA is responsible for me writing this review, thus far she provided the best customer service ever!!! Trust me, if you ever go, ask for her to help you, will not regretted. The food is great, the bone in wings and the brisket sandwich are amazing!
They have the big pretzel back... Yay!!! Yum! Have never had a problem with the food, always a good meal! Service left something to be desired. Sat for a long time waiting to order drinks. When we got our drinks we ordered an appetizer, which took so long that our food came out very quickly after it. Been a while since the service has nailed it. Not ready to give up yet.
Food was blend, tasteless I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it was dry. Had no flavor to it and all you could taste was straight char my husband ordered mac & cheese burger, and the only thing good was the mac & cheese everything else had no flavor whatsoever, the fries were pretty good as well But the service was great food horrible
Visited this place on 13Sep2022 along with one of the friend.Bar tender doesn’t know how to mix the drinks. We came here because of the friend’s daughter birthday and he given party to me because of that.I took 4 drinks, they merely have alcohol in it and they all feel overly sweet. My stomach filled with full of these useless sweetened drinks .Fully disappointed. We have visited GOLD BAR few days back which Is 1000 times better than this.
We showed up with a party of 30 on a Saturday night, was seated in less than 30 minutes, our server came over, and said hello, my name is Lyndee (sp), I am going to be your server tonight, and we are going to have a good time and she was SPOT ON the entire night with every single one of us. My husband and I eat at the Windbag almost every week, and the food is always excellent. But this time, it was extra special!!
We were there with a large party on the seventh, in the Big Dorothy room, and we had awesome service. Dallas was very friendly and super fast getting us all drinks. Our waitress was awesome as well, but we didn’t catch her name! The food tasted great and came out quickly, overall we would highly recommend this place for its great staff and food!
Great place! We had the barbecue brisket nachos! Fabulous 👌 Great family atmosphere ☺️
Tables sat dirty and unattended for up to 50 minutes. FIFTY. While people were being told at the front door it was going to be a 45 minute wait to be seated. We waited an hour for Mac and cheese that came out cold. Drinks are expensive for half a cup of ginger beer in a Mule. This place did not live up to the hype at all...
Huge mistake ordering just the half sandwich. As soon as I took a bite, I knew I should have ordered the full version. Amazing food - don’t miss out!
Great atmosphere, but terrible service. We have frequented the Windbag several times with varying service results. We generally sit at the bar counter (personal preference). Initially, the service begins attentively and promptly. Unfortunately, after that, the service declines to the point where we have to initiate contact with the waitperson for service. The last time here, the waitperson walked by us several times without ever acknowledging we were there. We even pushed our empty beverage glasses to the edge of the counter, hoping to get her attention. That too failed. We can not speak to the service at the surrounding tables, but the counter service is horrible. Weve had multiple servers, so it seems like its a management problem.
What a lovely stop on our way across the country. Weve stopped in Helena for a hotsprings soak. Jayden, our server at Windbag saloon was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Great food and excellent service. 🇨🇦 Thank you!
Had the Philly, which was a little sweeter than I like but atmosphere great, waitress was excellent, fries excellent( fresh and crispy). Definitely go back and try something else
Great service, food was okay, however it was pretty salty. Our food came out quickly & our waiter was efficient & friendly.
Before I get to the negative stuff, the bartenders were very courtesy and hard working, great job.The food can be summed up as stadium quality. The menu described the chips and queso as house-made chips with our signature cheese sauce. The chips were something that could be bought in a bag from Safeway, and the cheese looked like it had been oozed out of a luke-warm sack from a 7-Eleven gas station. The chicken fingers were of the same quality.Very loud music inside, and they dont serve food to anyone sitting on the outdoor patio (you have to place a to-go order for some reason).
I wanted to try everything on the menu! We had the enchilada bites. Mmm! 10/10 highly recommend! The roasted salsa was so good we could drink it. We liked it so much we came back later and got the Friday fish and chips special! Mmm! AGAIN! Im kinda glad I dont live here. I would eat here way too often. Thanks for the great food and atmosphere!
Went here to watch the World Series, game 6. Only one TV had it on out of several tvs in the restaurant. I was told by 2 staff members they would turn on the audio to the game when it started, however the switched audio to Katie Perry music. No one here likes baseball? The Montana dip sandwich was good. Would’ve stayed and drank the entire game if they’d cooperated & kept their word.
Lunch 4/26... enchiladas cold tasteless no sauce..Fish & chips no chips. .fish fried to death need hatchet to break through batter. .clam chowder good...SKIP THIS PLACE
Good bar/resturant with some local history. Cost of meal was fairly decent. Was so hungry forgot to take photos
This time, I was here for brunch on Sunday, which included bottomless build your own bloody Marys!! (Bottomless mimosas were an option also. Also, on the bottomless menu was biscuits & gravy. All were tasty and they have numerous accoutrement for the Bloody Marys. May just go back this weekend since its my birthday on Monday 😁
First time trying for work lunch during the week but, been here a few times nowGreat food but service was slow/terrible in a weekday lunch.Went in around 1pm place was pretty empty. Lady greeted me as soon as i walked in and brought water. Waiter showed up about 10 minutes later(odd since they were almost empty), asked for iced tea, brought no issue, asked if I was ready to order said I could pick something quick (work lunch break), walked away saying hed give me more time. Reviewed menu and knew what I wanted within a minute or two of him leaving, tried to give all the visual cues(menu set back down, looking at tvs/decor, drinking iced tea, etc. ), another 10 minutes, ordered Reuben and the filibuster fries(which I love & have had before) food came out fast, like under 15 minutes but fries were different(last few times parmesean cheese was melted, today it was just poured on cold), sandwich was great. Lady setting up st. Pattys day menus asked if i needed anything asked for refill and check. Said shed get it handled. Waiter never came back till check. Dinner/weekend service has always been great yhe couple times before...guess Ill stick with that.
Me and oliver ate here really cool but one of the tvs was playing cat and dog things instead of sports, but I watched womens lacrosse and college baseball and the Stanley cup
Great food, drinks, prices and service. Although Im sad to see the funnel cake fries are gone! 😭
The food is great, I love the atmosphere, but I just waited an entire hour to get my food. Too bad because I love everything else about this place.
Now folks. I am bias when it comes to the windbag because my husband is a cook at this place. I am personally 86d from the restaurant so all my feed is takeout.. 😂 . I mean if u yell at me I yell back! My attitude depends on you! But it is a great place for good food and friendly atmosphere. I included a few pictures of the cooks on Halloween.
The best service Ive experienced in a long time the food was excellent too, great place Ill be back.
The fish tacos were nice and crispy. The hamburger patty needed seasoning. Nice atmosphere and prompt service.
Great place and great food. I had a good time here.
One of my favorite places to hang out & grab food at the end of a work evening. I just wish their kitchen was open past 10 PM when the orchestra is in town!
Beautiful location in the gulch. Solid brisket sandwich, very good local beers on tap, good service , no complaints!
The food was excellent, the service was spectacular, and the environment was better than I had been led to believe. This was a 10/10 experience.
We absolutely love the Windbag! Their food is pub- style and high quality. Lots of local beers and they use local MT spirits in lots of the cocktails (which are excellent). All of the food is good, but some personal favorites are the fried pickles, giant pretzel, fish and chips, burgers, mac and cheese, and the fantastic funnel cake dessert. The service is good (the servers are super friendly and knowledgeable), but it does get a little hectic during peak hours. To our family, The Windbag is an essential part of Helena.
I ordered the chicken breast off of the protein menu, it was dry, not the best. However, my husbands buffalo cauliflower was awesome..that is the reason I gave a 3 star for food. Our food took forever to come out but our waitress was great, that is the reason I gave service a 4 star. If it hadnt been for our waitress, service would have been a 1 star.
My husband and I went here on the way back home from Vegas, and it was fantastic! Everyone was very nice, the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing! We read reviews and decided to go with the Buffalo Mac and cheese and the giant pretzel. Neither disappointed. My husband said that was the best Mac and cheese he has had in a long time. In fact, he had given up on finding the best Mac and cheese after being disappointed so many times. A shout out to our server, I wish I could remember her name, but she was finishing her studies to be an RN (good luck!) and she was fantastic. Helena is a great place to visit, and I recommend Windbag!
Great restraunt! I loved the house salad and grilled chicken. Service was great!
Yummy! I love the food and drinks here for sure! I do definitely miss the old Windbag and the history it held, along with the historic decor..The modernization was nice, but I feel it went from being an nice upscale steak house; to a, sometime overpacked, and loud bar, trying to at the same time serve, yes good food, but the mix up is confusing on what thenvibe is. Is it college bar, for young adults to gather and have fun, which I am extremely supportive of, or is it a restaurant with upscale service and drinks, but bar food? On that note, the food is really good, drinks are really good, and the atmosphere, if you time it right can be really great aswell. My girlfriend and I went here for here 21st birthday lunch and the food, drinks and service were fantastic! Late afternoon was a good time to go.
The food was great and the looks of the place were good. Do go.
The service and atmosphere is excellent here. The food is good, regular pub fare.
Great atmosphere and a friendly staff. Drinks were good, and I had the largest pretzel Ive ever seen. Unlike most soft pretzels Ive had, this one had more of a bread texture. It was delicious, and they provide a generous bowl of beer cheese dip. Next time Im in Helena, youll be sure to find me at Windbag.
Great food and drinks. Friendly staff and quick service.
We really enjoyed the bar and the Manhattans were excellent. The bar tender was very attractive, charming and efficient. For pub food, the Mac & Cheese was very good. Though we ate at several restaurants in the area we mad sure to stop by the Windbag for drinks each evening of our trip.
The Buffalo Mac and cheese was the best I ever had (and I have tried a few varieties). Plenty of TVs so you can watch the game from wherever you’re sitting. Waiter was super friendly. And great drink selection! The only recommendation would be better communication between host and waiter. It appeared the host wouldn’t tell the waiter when the table set and, additionally, it took a while to get a menu because the host wasn’t paying attention. We were there to watch the game, so we didn’t mind waiting, but I could see where it would be frustrating if you were just there for food.
Would give more than 5 stars if I could. We have had a couple of long wait times but the food and service has always been top notch! The Brothel Bites are a must have!
The Windbag is one of my favourite places to eat in town. I love the Mac & Cheese but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. You’ll get five star service. Taylor is the sweetest and best waitress. Always has a smile on her face and is so attentive. Highly recommend!
First time here, the food was great. The staff and the in building was awesome.
It was busy!! First time there and the food was great!!! The server did a great job as well!!
We went on a Friday night and the place was pretty packed. Its a loud place in general so its tough to hear at times. Staff were accommodating and allowed us to sit at the bar to get drinks and appetizers which were all delicious. Highly recommend the Brothel Bites, I get them almost every time I go!
Very good food but terribly noisey. Could hardly have a good conversation.
This place was amazing. The drink were delicious, not overbearing on alcohol but not missing it either. I didnt get to try the food but the drinks were perfect. Staff was incredible as well.
Was a very busy night. Our server was incredible and the food was incredibly good. Probably the best clam chowder Ive ever had.
Ceasar salad was lacking dressing, quite dry, Wings, they were out of Buffalo Sauce, quite disappointed
Always a great place for food. Great atmosphere with historic Helena art.
The gigantic pretzel is AMAZING. Super friendly/cozy atmosphere and great service. I love the cocktail lounge across the wall, got to enjoy a delicious drink made by a very handsome bartender while waiting to be sat for dinner. Will be returning.
Nice place with friendly staff. Prices are decent. Food got 3 stars because the fish in the taco came out looking like charcoal... no exaggerating, literally charcoal. Now, that being said, the server IMMEDIATELY worked to get it replaced and the manager comped that meal without having to request it, so the service is very good
Had a great time sitting under Dorothys portrait, eating amazing food!
First time in, and I had a hard time choosing what I wanted to try first. Will definitely be heading back to sample additional menu items.
I wanted to love this place…they have an awesome menu and atmosphere unfortunately the food was disappointing. Brisket Mac n cheese could have been so much better with more brisket. I could only find a few morsels. Beef dip was disappointing with dried out thin slices of beef. Not made in house for sure. Parm fries were cold and not much parm or garlic.
A waitress took at least 15 if not 25 minutes to get to us and I had to go ask for help. Not sure why they didnt have a waitress in that specific section cuz we were in the busiest section. And the place wasnt busyIm a waitress and I know what it takes. The waitress we ended up getting was very nice and treated us great! Food was great too! If you ever go there try the chicken parmesan boneless and make sure its boneless because you get money off for it being that way.
Good food and atmosphere but it DOES NOT make up for the POOR service. Please take your least experienced and youngest servers off of the front desk. Their inability to figure out how to manage the wait at the front is getting SOOO old. Sooo many open table, uncleared tables, and a wait of 30+ minutes. This is how you lose customers!
Loved the Windbag. They were efficient at getting us on the waiting list and their wait times were spot on. Love that they have TVs you can watch while waiting. The food was great, enough that we had leftovers for lunch the next day. Happy with it all!
We got there had a party of 6 and a baby. The service was ok however really slow. Ordered our food and after an hour later some of our party asked how much longer she said I dont know. They said then we are done no excuse to wait this long for food Bring us our check. We had ordered drinks about 10 minutes before that, did ask about our drink order and she said are you staying I said yes only 2 people are leaving we are hungry. After another 30 minutes we finally got our food. 1 and a half hours to get food is a little long. If your in a hurry dont come here to eat.
While our burgers were delish, the service was abysmal. Went almost an hour waiting for our meals without being checked on by our waiter. He was working a LOT of tables and the cocktail bar next door so I think this was management’s fault in giving him too many. Be prepared to wait about an hour for your food when you come here, even when it’s not that busy.
Its good to be able to go back and have a delicious meal and get good service again. We did go after the brunch transition, just to be safe we werent forgotten again. They didnt have any soap in the mens room, though.
A co worker ordered some Mac n cheese recently and said it was good. Her plate was overflowing with Mac n cheese to the point where she couldnt even finish half of it, and took the rest home. I was very disappointed tonight when I ordered it tonight as a to go order. It maybe filled a third of the box.... Very disappointing for the price. Also, 5 different employees looked at me and made eye contact, but it felt like almost 10 minutes went by before any of them actually asked how they could help me. And yes, I was standing right at the bar where the sign says pick up orders here. I love to support local, but I love more when my dollar actually gets me something worthwhile.
Great place to eat. We had lunch here and everyones food was awesome. Our waitress was running around super busy but still made sure that our drinks were always refilled when we needed and kept checking on us.
The best fish and chips ever! Very large portion the batter for the fish was spot on. Also had a jalapeno and cucumber margarita. Not a fan of flavored alcohol, but I gotta admit, that was a nice drink. The jalapenos and cucumbers went well together. I definitely would visit this place.
This place had it all! Great food, great service, and great theming! I dont partake of the giggle juice but do enjoy the flavor of heavily caffeinated energy drinks, so I asked my waiter what he would recommend. After a moment of thought, he said that he had something in mind. A minute later he returned with a handcrafted drink that was positively divine. 7 out of 7, I would recommend it to all!!
Mainly writing this review to acknowledge the fantastic service we received from Grant. He was so lovely and very informative with details about food and beverages. He seemed to have wonderful knowledge about their product and was friendly and professional. He was very timely and attentive throughout our experience.
Was here out of town on business, came out to establishment with my coworkers and there was a 30 minute way however after my coworker gave the server a number to contact him when the table was ready she never contacted him. My coworkers and I had to go back inside after 40 minutes of waiting for the text message to ask what happened and why he was never contacted; didn’t get that question answered of course and then we were seated outside. The food was okay just slow service.
Friendly service, good food, fun music at dinner time. The restaurant has always been busy when Ive visited, but the wait staff is still patient and cheerful with slow orderers. Ive never had to walk more than a block even though parking is challenging. Also, the walking mall where it is located is adorable!
Stopped here for lunchon our way to Bozeman . Our waitress was great. Large menu to choose from. Loved the decor of the place, our waitress gave us the story of the owner which was interesting. I had the Bleu bacon burger and it was delicious.
Montana Mac n cheese was amazing. Chicken Enchiladas had great spices. Fish and Chips were top of the line. Our server Rebecca went ABOVE and BEYOND for us! The bartender made excellent drinks. Reasonable pricing and a neat location in Helena!
If you want to be talked back to, charged for the wrong meal, and are into getting your order messed up you’re in the right place. I loved the windbag for years but after tonight I’ll never go back again. Our waitress asked us to order in a certain way which we were fine with. Then she got confused with what we ordered we tried to correct her and she said “you need to not interrupt me. I’m trying to do this in a specific way so if you could stop talking that would help a lot.” After our appetizers came out she looked at my sister who has a serious gluten allergy (literally could be hospitalized if she has any) and said “awe, so sad YOU can’t have any.” After that we didn’t see her again for another hour. Our food was cold and half the table was done eating before everyone’s food was even out. My husband got the wrong order and we had to ask for our check 4 separate times. Then she charged us for the wrong table. IDA was THEE worst waitress I’ve ever had. Like damn, at least fake it.
We went in for dinner while staying nearby for a work conference. Our group went in and had a 16-top table that we rotated people through for 2 hours. We all had separate checks. The food was fantastic. To top it off, we had one assigned server, and the food and drinks came out mistake free. We did this 2 nights in a row, and had different servers each night. The staff we had, is what makes a good restaurant, an exceptional restaurant.
We arrived on Sunday of the Labour Day weekend in September, being Australians, we were not prepared for the Labour Day holiday and fact that practically nothing was open in Helena. We were pleased to find the Windbag Saloon and although the staff were rushed off their feet, being one of the few places open; the food was good, the staff were quick, efficient and friendly. I’d go there again for a meal when visiting Helena.
A wood panelled chic bar end tables on the right, dining room on the left. The service by well trained bar personnel does a world of good. Attentive but not cloying. There seems to be a bit of a surfeit of vegetarian items, which could be punched up, but that may be part of the charm for some. Big Dorothy would approve.
Jennifer M is a wonderful servant! She always welcomes me nicely when I come in with friends and family and always gives great service. We appreciate you Jen!
The service was great, the local IPA on tap was excellent but the food was just ok. Missed a few more exotic and vegetarian options on the menu. It is a Saloon and Grill, so I guess that’s what you can expect.
Definitely a favorite place of not only mine but my Kiddos. Eat there few times a month atleast! Kait Is absolutely the best bartender server. Very kind and attentive to the details. Definitely will go in again just for her service.
We had to wait a long time to be seated. Host was doing something else and nobody else took the reins. Food was average. Prices were a bit on the high side. Our server was friendly and courteous.
Great location with outdoor seating and fantastic people watching. 😀 They had a lot of different drink options, including a handful of mules, which are my favorite. The food was tasty, and the service was great.
10/10 recommend the Mac and cheese burger. Best burger Ive ever had hands down. My friend had the black Bleu burger but only rated it a 6/10 because he prefers medium rare. Also pretty decent atmosphere.
Bathroom were dirty and unsupplied during dinner. Fried pickles were good but dinners were under seasoned, fish was mushy. Even the tarter sauce was ick and looked like it had been sitting out.Plus side drinks were good, and the atmosphere was fun. Too bad we went home and cooked a frozen pizza.
This was my second visit. Im giving 4 stars in the event it was just an off night. The first time I went back in December it was amazing, the staff was wonderful and took their time enough to get the food correct and give good service. And the food was fantastic! This time was a bit more chaotic. I ordered the poutine and was surprised in not a good way of how it was served. There was about 1/4-1/2 inch thick crust of mozzarella cheese. When it should have been cheese curds. A small handful of fries lay beneath this crust and the gravy haphazardly dumped above the cheese never made it down to the fries. I had to peel the catastrophe that was cheese from the bowl and order another gravy for my 14.00 fries. No green onions just way over priced mozzarella fries. Not impressed. The staff was attempting to be attentive but it kinda came off as screaming and rushing around due to the crowd. Im going to visit once more, since Ive seen the kind of food and service this place is capable of. Hopefully this was an off night. We travel from Great Falls to eat here.
Great food & drinks in an historic building with an interesting past. Decor & menu almost seems like a chain (professional, well designed, etc) but I don’t think it is. The Montana Dip sandwich was amazing. Bartender made a legit old fashioned. We liked this place so much for lunch we came back for cocktails later the same day! (That and it seemed to be the only bar open past 8:30pm on a Monday)
We enjoyed it! My son, the wing expert rated the buffalo wings 5/5 stars. The fish and chips were excellent, and the Montana dip was good. My husband’s sweet potato fries were a bit underdone but overall food was very good. The service was very good as well, quick drinks and I appreciate knowing when someone is in training.
We loved this restaurant, such good vibes and great food . Our server was amazing , sorry cant remember his name but he was mid 30 s bald but had a beard . I wanted to make sure he got recognized for his service . We sat out front on patio and the nachos and margaritas were very good . He made us laugh . Thanks so much !!!
Absolutely no complaints. Food was great. Service was amazing. Drinks were good. Price was just a tad higher than what I would have expected but doable for night out on the town at a iconic spot like Windbag. Chicken sandwich was great! BLT was great! Decent whiskey selection. Watched a football game there on a Sunday night and the staff never rushed us or pushed us to order anything extra. The funnel fries are to die for!!! Seriously, those were amazing. Me, my wife and teen daughter loved this place. Will absolutely return again!
I saw at the bar. The bartenders were rude. Extremely unfriendly. My food order took forever and instead of proactively informing me why. I has to ask 45 min late. The female bartender was the worst. Bad miserable. Showed. Will NRVER go back. I an a tourist from NY. Wr dont tolerate this type of poor service Try to pretend you like your job. Food took 1 hr. Terrible. No more
The service was slow and spotty at best. I didn’t get what I ordered. The waitress argued with us about our bill. The food sat a while before coming out. The Nachos are soggy and my salad was warm,
I had the Black & Blue Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. That was great. My friend had Gyro (very good) and garlic Parmigiano Fries...pretty bland because there was only a little cheese and seasoning in the middle. Atmosphere is good and service was fast and friendly. Waited a little to be seated but there is a seated waiting area. Menu has a big variety and prices are very reasonable. Will be back soon!
Jennifer was our server and we had 6 people… she killed it! She was professional and fun! We always love the food here and the atmosphere is awesome.
Although there are limited vegan options (2) I enjoyed the Beyond Burger and waffle fries. The drink selection is also excellent. Very beautiful building on the historic walking mall.
We enjoy the food and environment... and it seems that the bar has declined in professionalism and sufficiency. We sat for 45 minutes waiting for our drink order from the bar... all the while watching the bartender sing and dance, seeming to have no idea why he was there. Drinks used to be good, fitting the order. The last two or three times we were there our mixed drinks did not taste like what we ordered but more like a creative libation of the bartenders creative imagination. Food has been good, though somewhat slow lately, due Im sure, to staffing issues.
Super amazing food, atmosphere, and service! They have new seasonal drinks every month and even a cocktail lounge next door. Windbag is a perfect choice for any meal of the day.
It was a very busy night. My friends and I were worried we would not get seated. Savannah greeted us and assured us we would be seated quickly, which we were. Cassie was our waitress. She was the perfect median of attentive, but not too much where we felt overwhelmed. The two made it an amazing service that I will recommend to my friends and family. The food was phenomenal and came out in a very reasonable time. The food was excellent and the service was even better!
Overrated. The fish n chips - just no. Smelled fishy and tasted bad. Our waitress was just all over the place. Had to chase her down at one point. Husbands waffle fries were cooked to the point they were almost black. Downtown is great but I would skip this place.Even though the fish made me sick the waitress tried to charge us for it. She said she offered me something else. That doesn’t make it ok. We waited 45 minutes for our food. I was ready to go. Then she made us wait to take it off. It took half hour to check out. My husband is easy going as they come. He was livid when he left there. Do not recommend.
The menu looked fantastic and prices were reasonable but the actual food was really disappointing. I had fish tacos. They were completely cold and dry. Very little flavor. Service was exceptionally slow, with more than an hour passing from the time we were seated until food arrived. Very loud environment.
Pretty good. Instant seating for 10 was a surprise. Burgers were pretty good. Huge menu and I saw the giant pretzel walk by on a tray and it looks amazing.
Great atmosphere, the food is amazing! You can get stuff here that is unique and taste fantastic! And staff is just as amazing!
Nice place, fun atmosphere, great service..I Loved the bottomless Bloody Mary Bar...However I would pass on the tuna steak. I had to send mine back as it was way overcooked, they tried to make it right by making me a new one, but the flavor was just off!! Id give the place another try, as Ive heard they have good food, just NOT the tuna!!! Id never order that again!!
Had a fantastic experience at the Windbag Saloon! Our waitress, Marley, was incredibly attentive, personable and quick even though it was super busy! Definitely will be back and recommending to friends and family!
Extremely busy. Can be overly loud. Cant make reservations at all. Food is good but overly expensive. Was an awesome place when it first opened. But has become more greedy since. I mean $13.00 for cheese curds....WOW
Never had a bad experience here food is always awesome
Brothel bites. Enough said! Gets pretty busy and wait times can be a bummer but the wait is totally worth it! Drinks are delicious! Patio seats in the summer are the best and you may even see the Tour Train come by. A lot of history downtown Helena so its a good pit stop if youre hungry, thirsty or just adding to your history lesson.
Food and atmosphere were amazing, the service was not the greatest. The bartenders did not know how to make their drinks and the waited disappeared for about an hour so we had to go to the bar to order drinks ourselves.
Good food but took forever. We sat down at 7:40pm and didnt leave until almost 10:00pm we never got asked if we wanted another drink. The waitress seemed to not want to deal with us. Not unlike the last time we came here. Great food but the service was lacking.
Food was okay but a bit disappointing. Fries came to the table barely warm and the upgrade to Parmesan fries not worth it - just sprinkled on top and didn’t stick to the fries. Caesar salad tasted like it had sat out for 20 minutes. Fried fish was okay. Service was slow but good otherwise.
Food was delicious, we had the Buffalo chicken and a cheeseburger. If you have a stroller you cant enter the restaurant easily as you have to have two people to lift the stroller over 3 to 4 steps. Because of this we asked to sit outside and were lied to that they were not doing outside seating on a beautiful 80° day. This seemed very odd to us and 15 minutes into our meal we noticed most of the tables outside were now taken and being served food. Food is expensive but good.
Great classy bar, food is amazing, staff is great
We frequent this place as locals! Im always a fan of the Buffalo Chicken Salad here. The Montana Pub Club is an easy lunch for two too! And the best part are the drinks any time of the day are always great!
Only reason for the 4/5 in atmosphere is because the place DEFINITELY has ghosts. Service was top notch and the food was worth the price. None of the ghosts are evil, but its crawling with them. I would highly recommend (ghosts or not).
Jennifer is by far the best server yet!! Not only was she knowledgeable but she brought a friendly environment to the room!! Thanks so much Jennifer!
