Of course, this is an iconic place to visit and a must for anyone visiting NYC internationally for the first time. The bar and wait staff were fantastic and super helpful, really chatty and fun and made us want to stay much longer than we had planned to! They let you get takeout pizza from nearby joints to have outside, and we had to leave with a T-shirt!
First time at Stonewall was this last December 2023, and it was a blast! The legendary bar was hosting their weekly drag show with Hibiscus, and we arrived just in time to see her.The drinks were great, and she was on fire as she charmed the crowd and ate it up on the dance floor! I got to ask her what her favoriteplant was (snakeplant). The atmosphere was 10/10, the music was 10/10, and Hibiscus a 10/10- 10’s across the board.I highly suggest visiting at least once to see Hibiscus, or any of the other performers and bartenders, DJ’s, regular patrons there. It’s an epicenter of queer culture, and continues to stand to be.I will definitely be back!
Stopped by The Stonewall Inn tonight a little early before the crowds. Kristy was awesome. She greeted us with a smile and took our drink order right away.I always love when I get to a popular place early, with time to make conversation about the venue. Kristy took the time to give me the history of the bar and the neighborhood - thank you so much. Its not very often that a NYC bartender makes such a personal connection.Mel soon joined Kristy for the evening crowd. Mel was just as attentive and made sure that we had our drinks filled.I really appreciate the personalized service that Kristy and Mel gave us. We left as it got pretty busy and they both took the time to say goodbye to us. We felt like part of the family. Thanks Sonewall Inn. It was a great experience, thanks to your staff. Im going to rate Stonewall with 5-stars, which was well earned.
We are a family of four and we all agree that the highlight of our six day trip to New York was a visit to The Stonewall Inn. The staff were super friendly, the cocktails were fantastic and the atmosphere was amazing. Our boys had a fabulous time playing pool and we made friends with numerous lovely people sat at the bar. The appearance of popcorn with M&Ms was delightful. When we were leaving, the owner came up to us to say goodbye, giving each of us a huge hug. What a beautiful place. Thank you for a wonderful evening, we will remember it forever x 😘
Always I have a good time at stonewall. Music is very good, the decor, drinks, the performance are super nice and its worth it to check it out.My only down is sometimes the bartenders give you some actitud with no reasons and just some times take so long just to realize that somebody is waiting for them at the service area.
This is really an iconic place and I recommend everyone to visit twice. Come the first time as a tourist, understand the history, visit the US National Monument across the street. Go inside and think back to what it must have been like at that time. You wont need to use a lot of imagination, I am not sure its changed that much on the inside. Then visit a second time - come visit just like you would go out to any fun neighborhood gay bar, and enjoy the drinks, the handsome bartenders, and the fact this is a local institution for the community, and have a great time. Drinks are strong like many local places, various beers on tap, pool tables downstairs and drag queens upstairs... Its hard to ask for anything more.
I can’t believe it took me over two years to get down here! I work too much. If you work too much too, and want a fun place to chill during what little downtime you have come down to Stonewall. The drinks and service are excellent and so is Kristy if you’re lucky enough to be here when she is. Best bartender ever! I think she just made me a regular 🙌💜
Coming here for the first time, I’ve never felt more welcomed. Kristy was so cool and so welcoming being absolutely SWAMPED especially during this holiday. Felt welcomed and felt well served on a holiday- got a good one in her being the only bartender in sight.
Visited from Australia recently and had an unbelievable night! Charles made us feel right at home and provided amazing friendly service. Such an iconic bar to visit in NYC, its a must! A+
Caring and inclusive bar. The vibes are immaculate. Chuck and the rest of the bar staff are wonderful and super accommodating. Had a wonderful time! No food menu besides popcorn but had a wonderful time regardless. Really enjoyed their Christopher Street drink. This historical landmark is a must-visit.
Lots of history and the bartenders were super cool. We stopped by mid-afternoon on Saturday and this was the perfect spot to cool off from the heatwave outside. They didnt have any beer on tap, but they had a pretty standard selection of cans and bottles, plus the Stonewall IPA from Brooklyn Brewery.
I guess it really is an iconic place, and it didn’t disappoint at all. The location is ideal, the place nicely decorated and feel very warm and friendly. The staff is kind and helpful and the drinks are good. I didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. Wish the place could offer some light food which would nicely go with the drinks. Prices are correct for the neighborhood and I actually expected to pay more than this, so I very positive surprise.I would recommend stopping by for one drink if you’re in the neighborhood.
This place is absolutely fantastic, and of course dripping in history. It was an absolute pleasure to come here, and it was a highlight of our trip to New York. The staff here were super friendly and the drinks were inexpensive. I also found that the music was amazing and the place is brilliantly decorated. This in an absolute must-go place for any LGBTQ+ people who are interested in the history of LGBTQ+ rights in the US.
First time there. Kristy was AMAZING! My friend and I stopped there after lunch. Of course we had to get t-shirts. My friend wanted one for his daughter and she helped him figure out her size. Wereally enjoyed meeting her. I went to dinner after, and had so much fun with Kristy I went back. Thank you thank you thank you Kristy for making my first stonewall experience amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
As cool as it is to be in one of NYCs most historical gay bars the atmosphere isnt as great as one would expect. The drinks are just ok and the music is not great which is usually what youd expect from a gay bar. Definitely come for the history and shows they put on if youre into that sort of thing.
Decided since we had travelled from Australia to make sure we had a drink at The Stonewall Inn. Worst service in an LBGTQ bar in years. Ignored by the one bar staff on who happily served the couple next to me twice. Was happily serving regulars and ignored us despite asking for a drink twice. Walked out after 15 mins of being ignored. It was not particularly busy maybe 30 people inside.
Iconic. Where it all began. The crowd is always friendly as if the bartenders. Anyone in the LGBT community should stop here for a drink.
Went for the history, but cold beer and friendly bartenders made it a fantastic rest stop when touring the city. Not sure of their food items, but they do sell souvenirs, I had to get a T-shirt.
This iconic gay bar must be visited and the good news is that they have many events going on all of the time. They have an amazing karaoke or sing along with a live pianist, burlesque nights and many things going on upstairs to check it out. I especially like the bartender Chucky who makes excellent drinks and some of the best service in the city. Still very friendly still very exciting and still has very strong drinks highly recommend.
Took family to NYC to see sights last Sunday. Went to Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village to see ground zero for the LBGTQ+ movement. Very energetic atmosphere and sat on huge sidewalk and had drinks. Definetly a do again.
First time here in a long time, and I have to say Christie is *smashing* it!! She’s the only one behind the bar, and you’d never know it! Definitely will be back to see her again soon.
I was so excited to see the historic stonewall for the first time as a lesbian myself. I brought my mom to learn some history about my community and I wanted to buy a tshirt for my wife. I was practically berated by the female presenting bartender and it completely caught me off guard. She was very clearly upset to be there and it really really ruined the vibe. I want to cling to the good memory of seeing everything for the first time but I will have a hard time forgetting her terrible service and attitude.
Came by Stonewall to celebrate the 4th with friends, and could not have had a lovelier afternoon. Bar was bustling and busy, one woman behind the bar doing it all—bartending, serving tables, and bussing—and she was on fire! I dont know how she manages to do it all, but she is so kind, professional, and lovely, and gave everyone an experience to remember!
Visited the historic bar during my recent trip to NYC. It was late afternoon so rather quieter. Only one lager on draught and it was pricey enough. Rather dark and looks more like a dive bar. The bar staff were having a whale of a time with their playlist of No Doubt. I think most come because of the significance of the place in the fight for equality and its worth it just for that.
Dis😡🤬gu😓🥵ing Google stupid blocked my comment! I dont understand why system blocked my review. This is a very bad bar with horrible bartenders! Came here with full of respect for history, but got the worst experience Ive ever had.The glass was dirty, white goo, like phlegm. Yes, like phlegm. Very disgusting. Crazy!I tried to question him several times but he ignored me, he was just obsessed with his phone. I think he did it on purpose. Maybe a 30% tip doesnt satisfy him.At my asked, the female bartender changed new one for me. She thought the white slime was a lime. I mix drinks a lot and this is definitely not lime. The male bartender was concentrating on his phone and not the customers, and he was digging his ear with his hand few times. When another customer asked for a glass of water, I saw that he was pick up the glass under the sink instead of the clean glass on the shelf behind him.
I love this place. Always a fun time and it’s great that a place like this with so much history is still open and thriving in NY. Ask for Charles at the bar. It’s great to see a friendly face.
Okay so a lot of people don’t know there’s a dance floor upstairs. Go upstairs and enjoy the music and DANCE.Had some good times here.
You can’t beat the home of gay pride. The bartenders were great… nice, funny, prompt and had a good conversation with our group. This is a must visit for those interested in queer history and looking for a fun, laid back gay bar.
Love to come here with friends because the everyone is always so nice. The staff is so sweet and I love that it’s a mix of people and they have different themes depending on the night.
Really cool to finally experience the Stonewall and it’s historical space. Staff was great. I love NYC and the gays.
Historic place, no doubt about it, yet with a warm and inviting environment. Here you will find a lot of interesting people to chat or a quiet place to chill if you are not in the mood, everybody will respect you the same. People from all around the Globe come and go and the spice of life is paying a visit to this old and still strong bar.
My wife and I went twice to Stonewall. First off, the entire area is awesome and rainbows everywhere. The first time we went was on Friday. They only had the ground floor open, so it was a bit crowded, as expected. All of the staff was soooo nice! We had a great time with Carlos and Pallo (sp?) and they were so informative and kind. The second time was a Saturday night and it was a totally different atmosphere. They had the second floor open, so there was a ton of music and dancing. We had a great time! The only other thing I can comment on is that the staff wasnt as inclined to speak to you this day.Its historical, so I would recommend going to appreciate the history for the LGBT community and enjoy yourself!People are giving bad reviews saying that they didnt accept their digital ID. Their website gives clear expectation to bring your physical ID.Would totally recommend this place!!
This is the mothership. Where fight for gay rights movement started. Behold the spirits of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. It was all there. So if you’re in town and part of the lgbtq+ community, you have a duty to go pay your respects…and have a gay cocktail ☝🏼🤣. I do everytime i’m in town. It actually feels like home. They have dragshows from Monday to Saturday starting at 8 or 9 PM. Sometimes surprise celebrity guest depending on the ocassion. (Still hurting about missing Madonna’s surprise appereance a couple of years ago and actually being in town and not going) Good stuff, they got some margarita specials you can check out, and a whole lotta love and gay cocktails💗🫡
Everyone should come and enjoy the spirit of where it all started. This charming pub is so important, yet so kind and Suttle. Its the perfect place to talk, be yourslef and befriend someone, just as it was in the beginning, and it still is today. A place where you an simply just BE. Freindly staff, and very tourist freindly, come to be a part of it, and respect it.
Stonewall Inn is a fantastic place to start a bar crawl in the west village. Its hard to believe we were standing in the same place where such violence occurred during the 1969 uprising. It was nice to see the various photos placed around the bar documenting that era. We went on a Monday and enjoyed a solid dirty martini upstairs. Theres a small stage for shows and dancing. Downstairs there were several dozen people hanging out playing drag bingo. The queen calling the numbers was a total hoot. She sprinkled in lots of trivia -- I wasnt sure how it affected the game but it made it a little more interesting nonetheless. She loved heckling the patrons as they entered and especially when they left. We played a few rounds of bingo but never won one of the many prizes which included vintage porn dvds and a selection of kitchy stuffed dolls. This old school bar with super friendly service is certainly worth a visit when youre in NYC -- to see this landmark is historic and its just one of several other bars in the area so be sure to stop in.
We had 4 small drinks in 4 lil plastic cups sitting on 4 lil plastic chairs on the street. 100$ ok then 👍🏽
Whether you are a party person or not... this place is a part of the LGBT+ history. So it’s a must go place either you are part of the community or an ally or just to expand your culture! As a bar it has 2 floors with different vibes. The first floor is where We usually hang it’s is a chill vibe. They have a pool table and bartenders are super friendly!
Come here for the history but stay here for the warm atmosphere, friendly service and good drinks. I always have a great time whenever I visit The Stonewall Inn. It’s a perfect spot in west village to hang out with friends. They often have shows/events in upstair section. Overall a must visit whether you are a local or a visitor.
A friendly venue for an afternoon cocktail in a friendly atmosphere. A fair number of customers are not locals but visitors from around our country.History is a shifting lens but the place of the Stonewall Inn in the annals of gay liberation are set in stone. The establishment has been designated a New York State Historic Site (bronze plaque at the entrance).
One of my favourite places to go! The drinks are not badly priced. There is outdoor sitting, however, if you buy a drink from inside you can’t sit in the outdoor sitting area and and if you order drinks from the outdoor sitting area you can’t take them inside till you close out your tab. The inside bar and the outside sitting area are two different tabs. The people that work here are wonderful as always. There’s always something going on, especially during pride month. A welcoming atmosphere for sure.
I finally was able to go to the place Ive always wanted to go being a transgender woman. Stonewall inn is like hallowed ground for me because The Stonewall riots were started by a transgender woman standing up for her rights. My bucket list on that has been completely checked. I strongly suggest anyone in the lgbtq go to the Inn. I am a transgender rights Advocate and activist.
Really cool bar, but I paid for 2 shirts (a separate transaction from the tab I was paying for drinks with) and obviously tipped $0 (I was and did tip on my drinks). I filled out the receipt, placed it at the bar, and somehow was charged a $12 tip (20%). I do not appreciate shady businesses at all.
The Stonewall was a must visit for my recent trip to NYC and it lived up to my expectations! We went on a Friday night for the RuPaul watch party and drag show, and again on Monday night for drag bingo! The shows were phenomenal and the vibe was perfect. We felt welcome immediately and the drinks were affordable and very good! Overall it was a great experience in and iconic location that our group of 4 very much enjoyed!
This place is nice for a photo opp. Pretty much ONLY for that. It was quite a downer when it came to stepping inside it. I was really excited to be at this historical place with a friend who was in town from London, whom I was meeting after 12+ years. I was visiting from out of state too, and it was my first ever visit to this bar. I thought it would be awesome for us to meet there. However, there was this really rude drag queen who was the MC for some Bingo thingy happening that night. It seems everyone there was simply trying to keep a half-hearted smile pasted on their faces as she kept trying to insult people in the name of humor. And for a place that is so historical for us queers, this drag queen just assumed that we were “lesbians” and addressed us so. News Flash – Using correct pronouns or qualifiers that connote one’s gender, is not just restricted to drag queens! Plus, we weren’t there to sit and play Bingo, for God’s sake! Could they just leave people alone and let them be? It was like being in school once again – being asked to fall in line by the class teacher. What made it even more pathetic was how everyone there kept sheepishly smiling through all the sad attempts this drag queen was making to sound funny, when she was actually being really nasty and insulting, most of the time. I’m not sure if we were getting a special dose for being the only brownies there. But, for me, an otherwise nice evening turned really ghastly, thanks to Bingo being force-fed to us, along with some really insulting comments. We, of course, walked out soon after we finished our drinks. As for the drinks, the bartender was friendly. I agree with most others who say that the drinks were pretty expensive. I would add that they were pretty watered down too. I don’t feel like going there ever again. I’m sure there are friendlier places in town. Ruined a perfectly nice evening really well. Full marks for that, for sure.
Great atmosphere and wonderful place. So lucky to have been able to stop by here and honor this historical site.
Omg. Mel is the best bartender ever. Go off queen! LGBQ for life. Sorry for my other review I was PMSing ❤️
We dropped in here while on our without children Vaca and Kristy was amazing. Everything about her vibe and personality made us feel like we were family! We had a blast and didnt want to leave! We actually asked for her to stay on the clock all Thursday night! Lol shes been amazing and deserves the best raise! Such an amazing and fun person! Kristy - thanks for the impromtu 90s trivia fun!
A great little bar to visit and worth going to, if not just to say that you’ve been there. Staff were quite friendly and some drinks were reasonably priced. I would have given it a full 5 stars however, I found it strange as to why the same drink I was ordering (large vodka with Diet Coke), had jumped from $10 on the bottom bar to $20 when I ordered on the upstairs bar. I did question this at the time but was told that the staff member who survived me upstairs most likely misheard me when taking my order 🤷♂️
Had a wonderful afternoon hanging out with such nice people, and Kristy and Peggy made our experience just fabulous. Can’t recommend it more highly.
Female bartender lovely, male wearing skeleton needs firing- rude, bad pourer and an embarrassing representation of such a landmark of activism. Had no interest, customer service or enthusiasm of how excitong it must be to be lgbtq+ and attend their bar. Such a place could turn a lot of money with decent bartenders like the lady.
A must see considering its historicalImportance. The drinks were inexpensive, but the overall feel was a tad lackluster. Granted, it was a Sunday afternoon, yet I expected a littlemore. It took a little while to get drinks, but I believe the bartender was by himself. Just as the other reviewer mentioned, buying a t-shirt was a little, eh, lets say problematic. My wife wanted to buy one as a souvenir, however the bartender was too busy to retrieve one. We waited an additional 30 minutes for his back-up to arrive, however it never happened.
A historically significant bar thats as welcoming as you would expect. We went for drinks with a group of friends while in New York and enjoyed our visit. Would definitely go back again
They have non alcoholic options including Brooklyn Special Effects NA beer. Felt amazing to walk in for the first time. As a queer person, I loved the vibe here and we made friends within 5 minutes of being here. So many friendly people.
Great place very friendly had a great time coming back this week from Florida looking forward to visiting with my Granddaughter.
I got off the Subway just to have one drink at the Stonewall Inn. The bartender was awesome. I felt both humbled and honored to occupy a barstool in this legendary establishment. Do not visit NYC without visiting the Stonewall Inn!
Currently a patron for over an hour. I don’t know if my appearance is good enough for the atmosphere or what. I have received one drink at 4:15-ish. No one had followed up with me. It’s 5:17Pm. Not even a refill
Stonewall is an institution and it lives up to its name. One of the friendliest and most inclusive spaces and the bar staff there is amazing. Love a good Thursday happy hour with Mel and Kristy!
Nice place, they were friendly and served me and my friends quite fast. Recommended (for some reason in the states yoi need your passport to get into a bar?, they took my foreign ID with no problem)
Kristys service was A+ holding down the bar and outside tables solo. Superstar behavior.
My wife and I visited this historic location and enjoyed it a lot as a living museum. Staff was very understanding of us wandering around and gawking. Loved the photos of ordinary lgbt couples at the protests sixty years ago. Awesome that its still a functioning bar, although we dont drink. Really felt meaningful visiting here and the park across the street.
RUDE! I went to celebrate my queer friend’s wedding on 9/25. I asked the bartender a beverage question. He yelled, “look at at the *ucking sign” and waived us off. It’s wrong that in a national historic landmark, where queers won civil rights, we were disrespected by a fellow queer person. We felt unsafe and went elsewhere. I will sadly never patronize Stonewall again
My friend and I have just returned back to the U.K. after the most fabulous holiday to New York and to top it all it was Pride too which was the icing on the cake. We visited Stonewall Inn nearly every evening of our holiday and we found the bar to not only be iconic and stand for so much but the staff were very nice particularly the ladies during the afternoon/early evening shift. The atmosphere was fun vibrant and friendly. We had excellent evenings here. Thank you to all of you at Stonewall Inn and we are hoping to come back for Pride 2023 and we will most definitely be back to this wonderful bar 😀😀👏👏
Good drinks and service is good. Upstairs is great.
Wish I could give it an additional star. This place has history. DJ Chauncey up on the second floor always has great beats going. Melissa is a great singer and always books great acts. Awesome drinks on tap too. Love coming here.
Nice little bar, good prices!Visiting so I had no idea what to expect and there was a Drag queen performing live, super fun!!
A solid but not superb choice for a night out in NYC. Drinks are reasonable and staff is usually nice. It can be eclectic crowd, and generally seems to draw tourists and students (sometimes straight). Music upstairs on the weekend often plays top 40. Actually prefer to go on weeknights with more locals and piano bar style upstairs.
One of the best times I’ve had in any gay bar, New York or otherwise. It’s a wonderful, relaxed vibe, which is unusual for a place of such historical significance. Special mention to the bartender CHARLES, not just because he’s handsome, but because he’s one of the best bartenders I’ve ever encountered. He’s quick and hard working and has no time for nonsense, but he’s also so considerate and helpful.
The woman who served us was friendly, kind and an all-round star. Excellent service thank you.
Went for a quick drink on a Sunday afternoon, amazing vibes and good music
I used to liked this place but the bartender with the beard and hat was so rude. He was impatient and literally rowed his eyes when I asked to close my card
I’ve frequented this bar often. I ordered a round of drinks and paid in cash. The bartender provided me the incorrect change. I turned my back for two seconds to count my change and allow the next person to order their drink. Realizing the bartender shorted me ten dollars. I brought it to their attention. We went back and forth, they were adamant that they made no mistakes and said “I don’t know what to tell you.”. I finished my beer and left, there was no point in speaking with anyone else because it was my word against theirs. Needless to say, that was the last time I spend money at this bar, which sucks because I’ve never had a bad experience before until now. Other than the historical association, it’s just another dive bar.
An iconic establishment that attracts people from around the world visiting the city or pay homage to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights that started here. Friendly service, interesting patrons, fun activities that change nightly on the weekdays, and great dancing on the weekends.
Pretty with eclectic vibe. As a National Park passport holder, be advised they are scrupulously about under age passport stamps, so I guess leave your kids outside. 🤷♀️I don’t blame them, the liquor licence would be at stake, just wish one of the barkeeps had been more polite about saying it.
I go there most almost every week. I love the atmosphere. Charles is the best bar tender there, always makes me feel welcome and at home. I specifically go there to see him.
I’ve been going to Stonewall for years and years. When I say it’s family vibes- I mean it. The bartenders are the kindest most open and friendly that I’ve ever met. Stonewall really is a little gay heaven where you feel cozy, safe, loved, and free. From the drag shows, hot DJs and bartenders, diverse crowd, and historical photos on the wall- Stonewall is the place to be.
My friend and I were harassed by the waitstaff as two trans masc people using the urinal. A bartender repeatedly shoved my friend who is a Black trans man with the door to the bathroom saying that we were not allowed when we were simply using the restroom. We had paid for drinks, tipped, and were minding our own business in the urinals. Our queer ancestors would spit on what this bar has become. For the people who work here to harass and chastise trans people for trying to use the bathroom is astonishing. Go ahead and focus on the cis white straight tourists who come here instead of the clientele who made this bar what it is. Let the straight tourists own and demolish this landmark because thats what you believe will make a profit. How disappointing.
We visited The Stonewall Inn on our first night in NYC and was welcomed with open arms. All staff were very friendly and attentive, in particular Kristy and Mel who were just great. We will definitely be going back and highly recommend a visit to this important and iconic venue. Thank you.
My favorite Gay bar in NYC. The bartenders are amazing. Especially the Thursday happy hour and night crew.
Place was amazing. The atmosphere was great and bartenders took great care of me. Honestly if youre LGBTQIA+ and visiting NYC you need to check this place out, for one its a historical landmark for us and two theyre just great people
I’m used to hearing gay slurs out in my day-to-day life, it’s part of the world we live in. But the LAST place I ever expected to hear that kind of thing was in a gay bar. Or rather, THE gay bar. And from a BARTENDER?? On Friday (3/10) a bartender called Mel was working at the upstairs bar and she was rude to both customers and other staff, seemed like she herself was drunk. I was absolutely disgusted. Being a rude employee is bad enough, and I wouldn’t normally go out of my way to single a staff member out, but homophobia anywhere is inexcusable, and at Stonewall it’s unimaginable.
Used to be a haven for the queer experience. Now just a washed up facade. Only tourists and older greyed out gays clinging to glory days. Literally playing words with friends. Asked for a glass water during a 95 degree day. I am in recovery and was waiting for a friend. The bartender was disgustingly rude. Then again the male bartenders are sweet as pie. Whatever reason she was there... It was a mistake. What a waste of gay space.
My husband and I end up here at least once or twice a month, usually on Sunday afternoons and stay through the evening. We always have a great time and its always wonderful to see and hang out with Charles and Michael. It can get a little crowded sometimes but, hey, its a landmark!
The bars atmosphere is great and the drinks are also amazing. I was being approached crewpily by a man at the bar which I admittedly didnt expect here but the staff took amazing care of me. By the end I wish I had more than the $5 left in my pocket as an extra tip because these staff members will really take care of you.
Had a fun time at Stonewall while visiting NYC! There was a drag show going on upstairs and a typical bar setting downstairs. It was laid back and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The employees were nice too!
Went out for an early birthday celebration and I must say from the moment we walked in, the staff was friendly and accommodating. Loved the look and the people there were fun. Definitely going back. 2 years Later and here we are once again, we went on a slow night and met this incredible bartender named Chuck. We had such a great time so we decided to go on Halloween to celebrate my birthday once again Chuck was AMAZING!!!
The bartender is not polite. The service and environnement are very cold
I love this place but the bartenders have nasty attitudes, especially the female one who rolls her eyes at people LOL. But usually this place has great music and great vibes.
We stopped by and went upstairs to check out the live pianist. Both bartenders were fantastic singers, and the pianist takes requests; you can also sing karaoke style if you wish. This place is really great, and you’ll portably end your night here if you stop in.
LOVED IT. so full of history and so vibrant. Outdoor seating was great. Felt at home! We spent 4 hours here drinking in the sun and had such a great time. Highly recommend!!! Service was just ok but the experience was so great it didn’t bother us at all.
Went here this past weekend with my friend after another bar we wanted to get into was fully packed. Bouncer was surprisingly very nice, as Ive never been anywhere in NYC with a pleasant bouncer. She was tough but fair, if that makes sense. Anyway, we werent expecting to get in because it was a Saturday night and this was the most famous/historic LGBTQ+ bar in NYC. We were able to get in anyway! We sat outside and the host was super kind and funny. Our waitress was very nice and patient with us not knowing right away exactly what we wanted to order for drinks. I loved the atmosphere and being in a place with other people like us, no judgement.5 stars, hell yeah!
Our first time at Stonewall was one we will never forget. Christy and Carlos were excellent bartenders who felt like friends and the atmosphere and music selection was perfect. Thank you for the fun. We will definitely be back!
The short lady bartender who normally tends to the first floor bar is something else. Very weird not very friendly and I would dare to say homophobic even though I think she’s a lesbian. I was very surprised by her behavior.
It was my first time here and the staff was nice except for the bartenders. The second floor was so much fun but on the first floor the bartender practically ignored us even when we called him. After we finally got his attention, he told us to wait to get our drink order. We waited for almost 30 minutes and then decided to leave because he didnt acknowledged us after that. He only attended one side of the bar.
I didn’t want to give this bar 1 star. A friend of mine for 20 years invited me out with a group of her friends for me to meet because they were having the piano singing session. The night was fine until we went upstairs for the piano session. I decided to sing a few songs but while I was singing, I had Caucasian males and a female disrupting my singing because I was wearing a Kanye West shirt. I ignored them and continued having fun with my friends (all of my friends were of different races and religions). As the night went on, the Caucasian males kept antagonizing me; I ignored them. From there, they wanted to start a fight with me because of my shirt. When I was defending myself, the female bartender made sure they left and asked me what happened. Long story short, all was fine and the night continued. About an hour or so later, we were deciding to leave. I was watching a video on my phone, when a Caucasian guy (The Manager) came up to me in an aggressive manner and asked me if the guys hit me. I was confused at first but informed him that no one hit me. He said they should have. I was taken back by his comment. He then asked me why am I wearing a Kanye West shirt. I told him it shouldn’t matter what I am wearing and this is a free country. He then told me to leave before he has security throw me out. I couldn’t believe what I was experiencing as an African American woman. This place was terrible and racist. I understand people may not like Kanye West, however, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but to be treated like I was treated because I was wearing a Kanye West sweatshirt is ridiculous. This place is a racist place and I am so disappointed. It made me be ashamed to be a African American Lesbian woman for half a second and then once I walked out, I was proud to have stood up for my rights. I walked out with the shirt still on!
EDIT: I went again for a drag show and the bartender (Christy) said they wouldnt give me tap water if I didnt buy anything. Shameful. At least the show was good.Worth a visit for the history, very expensive for the drinks. $10 for a rum and coke in a tiny cup and $20 for a double rum and coke in a standard cup size. The cocktails were tiny (like small cup of water from the water cooler at the dentist waiting room tiny) and all around $15. The waiter wasnt the nicest, either, which didnt help the vibe. We left shortly after because it wasnt worth the money. The stars are really just because we love a gay business and historical icon.
Kristy and Chuck were awesome! Came from Tennessee .We went two nights and had such a great time. Wonderful service and atmosphere. 20/10
Kristy is the best. Running the place by herself!!!!!! I love Stonewall
I lost my PASSPORT and wallet and the bartender Miles was so so so sweet and working so hard all night and found it for me at the end of the night. Not everyone in New York cares like that. I’m so grateful, give miles a 500$ bonus pls
I went by the bar on a recent trip to NYC. I always wanted to visit because it’s legendary. I am surprised how much of a dive the place is considering it’s historical importance. The interiors were really old and the bathrooms were not very clean. I think that the owner should consider updating the interiors (still keeping many of the original elements) and give the place a makeover and make it more upscale and modern. Maybe they should charge a cover in order to finance a renovation? It’s historically such an important bar that I think that it should be much grander than what it is currently. It really should be a must see destination for all gay tourists. Also, I would have loved to have bought a Stonewall T Shirt as a souvenir but the bartender was too busy. They should have a separate little area to purchase these items and please have them available for sale during the day.
Everything was good however they couldve offered sth to eat
We barely made it through the door and the place already made a bad impression. The waitress was not friendly at all, drinks are not really that great and they hold on to your credit card for the entire time you are in the bar. I’ve never seen something like this and it made me feel uncomfortable. On top of this, one other guest was charged for drinks he didn’t order. I’m never going back there !
Bartender was so fast and efficient, great DJ on Friday night. Coming here always makes me happy. Thank you for doing it so well at such an important place. ♥️
We (a gay couple with a baby) were disappointed to be refused service at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon with our 10-month old son. Popped by hoping for a quick drink to cool down and were told babies are a liability and they can’t allow them even to sit with parents outside. What!? Dogs, yes - children of gay couples, no? We hope management reconsiders otherwise they run the risk of becoming a historical gay monument stuck in the past.
Horrible horrible service. Very racist KAREN female bartender. Extremely unprofessional. Me and my friends were waiting for 30 minutes and she wouldn’t even look at us and would take orders from everyone around us. Then when she did take our order she bypassed us and asked our Hispanic friend what he would like. Then our drinks were extremely watered down. She had no customer service for PEOPLE OF COLOR. Very disgusting behavior for a historic place that history is based on inclusion. DISGUSTING!
Last night your bartender CHARLES threw a drink on me and had me thrown out when I took my card back because apparently ordering a double does not meet the “two drink minimum”. Mind you I hadn’t even touched the drink. It was like he was about to hold my card for ransom. Apparently I am not the only person he’s needlessly acted this way towards. It was absolutely uncalled for as my behavior did not warrant his actions; he even had to point me out several times to the security guard who was standing literally right beside me as I was not causing any real trouble.Almost every time I have been here it’s been a terrible customer experience. That’s why I stay away. The happenings at and surrounding Stonewall are important. The Stonewall Inn is terrible.
As a Gay Man I was Very Disappointed in the lack of qualified bartenders. I was there with cash in hand, and they proceeded to take 4 credit card orders of others that came in after without even the slightest polite word. Might as well have gone to a straight bar at least there I could have gotten a drink
I love just being there, it’s always a good time and it feels so good to be where herstory took place.
Historic place, was hoping to have a welcoming experience. As an establishment with so much history, isn’t it important for the staff to provide an inclusive feeling to the guests? Apparently they don’t care about that at all. Unfortunate, when you have people coming here from ALL OVER THE WORLD. If I come back ever, I hope there are bartenders that act like they want to be there.
A great place to brighten up gray everyday life, have coffee and relax. Recommend. On weekdays, a lot of people) fun)💓There is a little trick to get a free cocktail and a separate room for 2 hours, you need to register on site 909gay,com 😍 and give the bartender a profile number.
Love thos place! Had so much fun. Great loud music with karaoke. Good mixed crowd of people. If you like a lively loud place, this is for you. If you want a quiet drink ...maybe not. Its an iconic place!
Went there yesterday, the bartender was a blonde girl, and it was rude when we asked our drinks. We spent there about an hour, and when we paid he was rude again. We decided to not give her any tips, and she was ironic and rude when taking the ticket back. Its a pity because it could (and should be) a very friendly, inclusive and open bar, I went there excited to see hows the place where the fight for our rights began, and having this experience is very disappointing. Drinks are overpriced too, but you kind of expect that on a place like this.
Stars are mostly for the historical significance of the place. Nowadays, it may me a good bar to just chill and have a reaaaaally relaxed time, rather than enjoying and having fun.It could really use way more staff, bartenders look perpetually busy even when the bar isnt that much.
I have never had a bad experience at this bar. Its a great place to dance. There is a very diverse crowd. I personally love their karaoke and any special events they have. Its always a good time at stonewall
An iconic historical spot, the official start of the gay pride movement. Friendly bar. Good event room.
My partner and I had a wonderful time having drinks and conversation at this historic bar. The bartenders were so nice and friendly even during busy times. I hope to be able to visit again soon
The bar that started the gay rights movement! I cant not love this place. Awesome to visit and the people are nice as well. Only downside is that the drinks are definitely pricey. Theres a first level and upstairs. Glad to have been part of the historic crowd when gay marriage for New York was passed!!!
A classic. The birthplace of Gay rights and a do not miss when in the west village. Great beer selection and a varying nighttime entertainment venue. Great for the day and even better at night! Gays and lesbians mix at one of the homes to LGBTQ culture. Pay your respects, play pool or celebrate diversity. It’s the place!
This place is the ultimate tourist trap. I paid $25 for a vodka soda. Go because of the historic aspect but honestly, there are much better places to be and be seen
One on duty, and she is not efficient. Finally get to order. We don’t accept card by tapping. No cash on hand, so goodbyeDevelop country/places accept cards.Undeveloped country/places doesn’t accept cards
Its charm lies in its unassuming facade. It looks like an ordinary pub from the outside however, you will be treated to an assortment of vibes once you enter. The doors are manned by a security which requires you to present an ID for age verification. Drinks are priced between 7-10 dollars. Performances usually start around midnight or around 11 PM. It can get a bit crowded however the fun lies in the crowd it draws.
They talk a big talk about inclusion and safe spaces but they dont let you in with a New York City ID because they cant make money off of booze sales. What bullcrap. What if a low income queer person without any ID needed to get away and be amongst their people for a night? What about sober queers?I was visiting NYC from Canada and wanted to visit this iconic place, but my friend (a tax paying working individual with a NY city ID) was denied entry saying they dont accept this form of ID. In her 4 years of living in NYC shes never been denied entry for her NYC ID. And to have it denied at Stonewall of all places was messed up.
First time into the Inn and what a wonderful time warp into history! Its a darkened room with a great atmosphere with reasonable priced drinks. I went up to the room upstairs to watch my friend perform his music and comedy and paid $5 which was fine.. but the barman upstairs came up to me and my friend and said its a minmum of two drinks upstairs? I didnt buy another 2 drinks but thought that was pretty stupid.
If you are looking for the Stonewall National Monument NPS stamp, just ask the bartender. This historic gay bar was the site of a famous series of riots in 1969. For this reason, it is considered one of the most important places in LGBT history. The bar itself is dark and feels historic. I really enjoyed chatting with the bartender. All in all a wonderful experience.
This is the historic gay bar where it all started. It has a great atmosphere and is welcoming to all people, gays and straights alike. I regularly attend on Monday nights which are, apparently, drag queen bingo nights. I get read (gay speak) every single time I walk through the door by the queen mother, but its all in fun, and its hilarious. Love the place and the prices are great.-blasianFMA
Paolo is a sweetheart is the general consensus. He just got a nomination for GLAM Awards - Best Bartender. This iconic landmark is friendly & safe for friends of the family too. It is worth a visit to where the LGBT Pride & Rights Movement began.
For being a Historic place that I hold great value transcending gay rights and over passing hardships. It pains me to give this place a one star simply because they don’t accept ID NYC. As the only way of identification for people like me . I have no other way to validate my identify other than what the great people of this city are allowing me to have. I’ve been here before without a problem supporting my great peers like Honey Davenport and Novazcar. Unfortunately I can’t support gay places that won’t support me simply because of my legal status.
Not a typical gay bar. Its more like a touristic spot due do its history, where straight people likes to visit. The bartenders could be better. I dont think I have a reason to return.
Historic gay bar where the pride movement was born. I was told by a local that only tourists go there. But he told me that while he was sitting at the bar. I think maybe only tourists admit they go there. I had fun and the bartenders were friendly.
The feeling of stepping into this bar and getting a drink is like none other since the history here is so important. The vibe inside was great and everybody was so nice and helpful. Drinks were good and I had an amazing time.
Amazing bar. Not only is it an important part of history but its a fun bar for today too. Bartenders and friendly and drinks are relatively cheap. The upstairs is fun for dancing and they holding pretty fun weekly events.
We were there last Friday celebrating a friend’s birthday, one of the staff was offering jello shots and had a very disrespectful and hurtful tone with us such that we didn’t even finish our drinks and left the bar. Not generalizing one person’s attitude to the rest of their team but I think a remarkable place like this should make sure their staff treats people from all races equally
Such a great and memorable place! Good for drinks with friends after work. Love celebrating pride here too
A wonderful bar, the bar staff are adorable and the multinational clientele friendly. However, we received the most abhorrent welcome from the miserable fat bouncer who was rude, obnoxious and overtly threatening. Despite having a few good nights, our group choose not to return. Such a terrible shame, however, we should have felt welcome and safe at this venue.
This is a unique bar in NYC that if you’re part of the LGBTQ community you must make a visit to ( of course everyone is welcome ).Just said if you’re part of the LGBTQ community because of its history of our community that this bar have.It was where out community started coming together and fighting for our rights and it was where we could have a little of getting together with members of our community when it was “forbidden” to be ourselves. It seems crazy that this times existed in the past.Just love this place
Went to Stonewall today for a drink and the man that greeted us was pretty rude and unfriendly so we ended up leaving and going to a more welcoming bar around the corner. We were really looking forward to experiencing this piece of history so it was disappointing that there wasn’t someone more pleasant at the front door. We won’t be back.
Always a fun time here with some friends. Really casual crowd. I’ve been here a few times. There’s dj music or a drag show upstairs, depends on the night. Entertaining time when you come here. Really cheap drinks, but if you use a card there’s a two drink minimum. There’s two levels. Downstairs is pretty much a dive-y bar: pool table and juke box kind of thing. The upstairs has a dance floor. Mixed crowd. The drinks are pretty strong the last few times I’ve been there. One of the fun bars I’ve been to here in NYC.
I walked in and felt a wave of relief wash over me. It was such a warm environment, felt like home. Our server was friendly. Even outside of the history, it was a great bar to spend a few hours in.
This was our third trip to NYC and our 3rd trip to Stonewall. So disappointed to be declined entry as didn’t have physical copies of ID’s, both in our 40’s, so defo look old enough to drink! Never been asked for this before and have been in lots of bars across NY and Manhattan since arriving and haven’t been asked for ID once. So upset and frustrated - especially since making a special journey from downtown. Guys, come on, no one else is imposing such a stupid rule. When travelling to destinations overseas - always advised to lock ID in hotel safe and not travel with them.
Always a fun spot to dance. Drinks aren’t very expensive. Place is inclusive towards all genders
Ive never been to New York. I dont drink alcohol. I hate walls and bars. I am trans though, so I give gay bar 10/10 gay bar nice place. Nice gay people. I like. Yep.
I had a great day at Work and My friends and I decided to stop by stone wall and pay homages. However despite my great mood we were introduced to Peggy the bar tender. Talk about horrible service. FYI when stopping by here I hope you do not get the same treatment as I.Might I add. I believe In killing with kindness. I continue to be pleasant and sit at the bar while I wrote this review. #smiles make the world go wrong.
Honestly the worst place Ive ever been. I was there for 25min waiting for a drink and both my friend and I went up the this older Male bartender and he completely ignored us the whole time and served everyone around us. seems like he was more interested in serving guys that he thought were cute. never again will I go here and I suggest unless your a cute boy dont yo there either.
So wow. The long story short of it is I was absolutely appalled at the way we were treated by the bartenders on Thursday evening (early Friday morning). We walked in at 2:30 a.m., were carded by the door man and told to have a good time. This is my second trip to NYC and my first trip to the Stonewall Inn. As someone who identifies as gay/queer, it was important for me to pay my respects on such a monumental weekend. But the good intention and fun stops there. Once we reached the bar, a female with brown hair in a pony tail and tattoos refused to greet us. We stood there and waited and waited and waited - the other bartender, a slender gentleman with longer hair, made eye contact not once, not twice, but three times and he also refused to greet us. After waiting 18 minutes, and being skipped over for many others at the bar, I finally asked the brunette, tattooed bartender if we could be served. She LITERALLY scoffed in my face, rolled her eyes, and stated she was busy with other customers. (It honestly just got uncomfortable) She poured her drinks for this other patron and then proceeded to go to a gentleman (friend, they hugged at the end) at the side of the bar and lallygag, laugh and essentially complain about whatever it is she was upset by. It became super awkward. *Very awkward* To the point I stated to her, Im sorry, we are visiting and just want to get drinks, not sure what we did? (Which was absolutely nothing, her and the other guy were rude the minute we walked up, why am I apologizing so you can do your job?) She continued to ignore me and act like I wasnt even speaking to her. So we thought, lets give it a few minutes, maybe shes busy. (HUGE benefit of the doubt here, I bartended for ten years and have never exhibited or extended such rudeness in my life.) At almost the thirty minute mark she finally says what do you want? We tell her and she pours two paltry drinks for my friend and I and immediately wants to close our tab. We close it, and because we understand these are peoples livelihoods, we left a $10 tip. (She had no problem entering and keeping that though.) For one, I was completely unaware she owned the bar and could make judgement calls on when and why she wanted to or didnt want to serve drinks just because its late, shes miserable or just doesnt want to serve strangers. Two, oh wait, shes not the owner, and thankfully Im not either, because there is no way I would employ anyone like this on my staff. Read previous reviews here and on Facebook, you can be assured this isnt the first time and it certainly will not be the last. She was nasty and didnt deserve a dime and she knows it. Extending this behavior to other bar staff is also immature at best, I say this because the other bartender appeared newer. None the less, its just common courtesy and doing your job, which is customer service, and it should have just come to him naturally. Hopefully you can look forward to whatever excuse she may extend to you for her rude behavior but if you have cameras, video, etc, by all means please view the footage, her actions speak for themselves. (She finally made us those (terrible) drinks, right? Absolutely no reason for the epic and childish meltdown she exhibited at the bar, especially on this weekend)My review is for the bar staff only, not the inn itself, which had great patrons and good music, and polite door staff.
Stonewall is one of those places you need to check off of your list when youre in the area, and if its a part of your history. I love sneaking away to the little upstairs area that the bar has for a little more quiet time (quiet as a bar can really be, and when the party downstairs isnt big enough to spill upwards). So much history within these walls - and so many drunk gay people to vibe with. Not a bad time in the least.
