Visited from the Rocky Mountain west and traveled all of New England along the coast... Portsmouth Gas Light co. had the bar-none best warm lobster rolls I have ever had! Everything was amazing, the servers and other staff were professional and helpful. It was busy so at one point I wandered off to find silverware and was helped immediately. Food was 10/10 great, and I have to visit from Montana again sometime!
My (now) wife and I did our rehearsal dinner at Portsmouth Gas Light Co. and let me tell you it could not have been a better experience. I think I had more fun there than the actual wedding! We are both not great planners when it comes to these types of things and for that reason we are so lucky we decided to have our event here, but more importantly with the help of Michelle. When youre busy planning your actual wedding, sometimes the other things get pushed to the side like the Rehearsal Dinner details until last minute and you find yourself scrambling. Michelle could not have been more helpful holding our hands to make decisions for our night with food and bar options for our guests. We had about 60 people there by the end of the night and everyone was mingling throughout the room comfortably. We didnt want to do a sit down dinner type of event as we wanted it to be more social for friends and family that hadnt seen each other in a while and the room was perfect for it. Though we decided to not do a sit down dinner type, they gave us the option to if we wanted to do so. They really give you the option to set up the room how you want it.We did the pizza buffet as well as large trays of the antipasto, fruit & cheese as well as cookies and brownies. Everything was awesome and we received great comments from our guests.Michelle and her team are some of the most kind people Ive ever met and made sure we had everything we needed and all the important details squared away.If you are looking for a place to hold your event, look no further. You will not be disappointed.I cant wait to go back and visit.
The ambiance can’t be beat. The food may be a little pricey, but you certainly get what you pay for in terms of quality. The lobster roll featured generous heaps of meat, & the fish & chips were served “wicked” hot, & everything was delicious! Averie was welcoming, & took great care of us, as our Server.
Great space, and we got a fast seat at the bar. Bartender agreed with our choices and said the candied bacon was amazing. She was NOT wrong. Sandwich was amazing, literally. Drinks and service were great. The kitchen crew seemed great too, things were organized and cleaned and great. Butttt...I just didnt love seeing a cook spraying a cleaning solution that was splattering on the fridge doors and open trays with food around, then wiping everything down, and jumping right back into cooking and cutting meat without changing gloves. I watched closely, no changing. As someone who has years of kitchen experience, wasnt the best sight to see as chems and food dont mix. Minor mistakes may make or break. Hope they see this message and live and learn.
Never planned for a night like this. Went out to Portsmouth NH for a fun night out and exploring the place and ended up here after hearing the band outside playing music! Great atmosphere and amazing staff.I ended up going to the third floor club later that night, and my night got even better!🤠👍
We go here every time we visit or drive through Portsmouth. We love sitting downstairs at the pizza cafe and getting brick oven pizza and drinks. Not usually too busy if you go little earlier on the weekends
On vacation visiting places I used to hang out all the time. So we were early dinner and place wasnt busy, so want to start there. We had an excellent family time and eryones meals were perfect. Ill have to go back and look at everything we ordered and fill in the blanks, but without a doubt one of the best meals of the trip. The menue will fit everyones interest.
We ate downstairs in the Pizza Pub, and it was straight up 1980s from the decor to the tunes. We almost left but decided to let it ride, and Im glad we did. The service was great, and the pizza was amazing (we had the gaslight and a greek salad). I would definitely recommend it, and for those that want great pizza and a little 1982, you wont be disappointed!!
Better than I was expecting. Nice dog-friendly patio, decent beer list, and the buffalo chicken wrap I had was near-perfect. Kid-friendly with a good kids menu and tasty chicken tenders.
Went there fir the night club event, live band performance was great. DJ performed well. There was no cover change and drinks price was very reasonable. But drinks prep might need more attention. Brick oven Pizza downstairs at basement was really good. Overall nice place to spend your evening. Located right at middle of downtown.
Late lunch/ early dinner was excellent in every way. We had the Portsmouth salad as a burger side. Two different types of burger reminiscent of charcoal grills in the 70s. Our favorite salad and burger place. We had Kailey as our server— she not only didn’t miss a beat, she was able to juggle so many tables treating each group as thou they were her only customers!
We went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. We were seated right away and the server came over shortly thereafter. We ordered four beers, two side salads, and four entrees. My side salad was really fresh and delicious and pretty big for a side. That’s where the good ends. My lobster roll was not fresh. You would think that with Portsmouth being on the water and it still being summer, it would have been fine but it was not fine. It tasted and smelled fishy. It was also very red for some reason. The other people also had mixed reviews with their food: a chicken veggie wrap, a hamburger, and a chicken salad.
We chose to dine there because it was pet-friendly and had received positive reviews. The wings were delicious; however, the main course was a letdown. The ribs were stringy and tough, and the fish and lobster were under-seasoned. I regret that my friends experience was marred because we chose this place for my dogs sake.
Went to an event with my husband and he was served alcohol after ordering a plain coke. I am deeply troubled because it happened twice. To a person who has not drank in 15 years this is a big deal! Not a good experience and I hope they take this opportunity to better train their staff.
Outdoor Patio is an absolute favorite among all Seacoast & Portsmouth restaurants (not on the water, but definitely #1 off the water by just 100 steps 🧐)Menu & specials give great variety, creativity, and rotate throughout the year😋Atmosphere must be dialed in by knowing what you want, and timing it for a wide range of quiet garden conversation, or jamming live music with dancing & standing room only 😂😂😂. Always a good vibe if you fit the weather & event board 😉
The Pizza never disappoints, always the best around, with many interesting and delicious combinations, or build your own. Service in the pub when I was there was fast and friendly, kudos to Terry (Sp?) and Avery for a job well done. Cocktails were delicious (they have my favorite brand! LOL) and the bar service was on spot, as soon as my glass was empty I was offered a refill. Oh, and their Frequent Diner deals available through out the week cant be beat, a fantastic value. Cant wait for warmer weather to enjoy the outside venue, The Deck.
We arrived before the rush, but service was slow. The food was delicious , but slightly overpriced. We eat out a lot so we know what prices currently run and these prices were about 10% higher than average for the food choices. The hummus was clearly made in house and was a more chunky version than a typical hummus, but had great flavor $15. 2 out of 3 enjoyed it. Stuffed mushrooms were delicious and came with 6 for $15. (BTW pricing posted outside did not match pricing inside).Fish and chips plate came with 2 good size pieces of fish and a plate full of fries for $28. Bowl of butternut squash bisque was $7. Grilled haddock with a scoop of risotto topped with 6 asparagus stalks was $32. Sataki (sp?) Chicken had a large scoop of risotto and 6 stalks of asparagus at $28. Has a spicy kick. All of the dishes were very tasty.Of note: there are 3 floors with 3 different restaurants inside which we did not realize when we went inside. See menu picture for each floors restaurant.
Hi! so I downloaded this app just so I could review this place, I have never been so disrespectful in my entire life. He would not accept my philadelphia id, even though I went to a literal police officer down the street to scan my id and the police officer told me to tell the bouncer that I got it scanned with a police officer. The bouncer then began to pick a fight with me telling me I didnt listen to their directions and refused to let me in. I am baffled by how disgustingly disrespectful andmisogynistic these bouncers were. I am truly so sorry if any person has to experience what I experienced tonight I hope this place closes down.
Tried several non-meat pizzas. All very good perfect crust. Had a tasty ceasar salad self serve with a great tomatoes sUse and flat bread crusts to serve self at buffet.Great price. Tasty food. Friendly server.
I stopped in for a quick bite to eat Monday night. I ended up sitting at the pizza pub bar. There was a wait for a table. Angie (the bartender) was very nice. Great service she was up beat & fun. My order was put in quick & came out hot. I had a few drinks too. They were amazing. She asked what I wanted for a drink & I said surprise me. She DID NOT disappoint. So good i had a 2nd (not like me) I will be back again!
The restaurant has 3 entrances street side; 2 were blocked off and the 3rd wasnt identified. When looking at the available entrance it leads to a set of stairs leading up. After figuring out how to enter the restaurant, we were not greeted. We walked in, proceeded to the host/ess station or podium and a young lady came from behind us and stood at the podium. Several seconds past and she finally said Hi. We requested a party of 2 and a booth. She lead us to the booth and dropped 2 menus and walked away. The restaurant was NOT busy.Ten minutes later a young male waiter came to our booth and we were greeted with another Hi.While sitting, we noticed another couple being sat by the same hostess. She did the same with them as well: placed the menus on the table and walked away. They were greeted by a different waiter who also said Hi. Uncertain if they placed an order, but shortly after they were greeted, they left the restaurant.I ordered a Draft Beer and my wife a sparkling water. We ordered it, not asked can I start you off with a drink?. We were asked if you would like water also which we accepted. Our drink were brought to the table: the beer was cold and refreshing. My wife was served a bottle of sparkling water with the cap still on and a paper cup with a lime and lemon in it. No glass was accompanied with the bottle of water. A couple minutes went by and and I had to get the waiters attention. He approached and I asked for a glass for my wifes water. My wife asked for a bottle opener. The waiter responded Oh, its not a twist off?. Obviously not, but we would expect the bottle to be already opened and poured at the table. He took the bottle from the table and returned it open. He also brought the glass. No ice.We decided to place our order (not asked) and ordered a cup of chowder and our entress. He asked if we wanted the chowders to come out first and then he would bring out the entrees. We agreed and continued on. Our chowder came fairly quickly and was hot and tasted very good. We were close to 1/2 way done with the chowder and our entrees were surprisingly delivered. NOTE: When anything was served (drinks, apps, entrees and bread), it was placed at the front end/edge of the table. They were not served or placed in front of us.We finished our meals, sat with our empty plates for several minutes before the waiter returned to our booth. He asked if we were all set and we told him we were finished. He asked if we wanted to take anything home. The plates were fairly empty and we said no. He cleared our plates and things and my wife noticed the bill had already been placed on the table. Never asked if we wanted anythingelse. We paid, he collected the bill and payment, returned it for signature and told us something along the lines of take care.THE ENTIRE TIME WE WERE THERE WE FELT UNCOMFORTABLE. We immediately left the restaurant.NOTE: This is not a review to personaly target or attack the individuals that served us. It may have been there 1st day and we have all had our own 1st days. I also understand that waiting tables is NOT an easy job. THE ESTABLISHMENT needs to do a better job at selecting and/or training its staff. Especially for the prices you pay for the food.
The pizza at this classic joint has very tasty choices and offers a large amount of draft beers. The only issue I had with this place is that I had a piece plastic in my beer, that was definitely a cooking hazard. Luckily I noticed it in time after my second sip. But overall the service and the food was great!
First time eating here and with any takeout, I am always worried the food will not taste as good as if eating there. We did not feel like eating out because we had some stuff to do at home, so we took the chance! Glad we did because the food was definitely worth it! I particularly loved the pull-apart cheese sliders, it was a unique way of eating a cheese appetizer rather than just getting mozzarella sticks, and the haddock and risotto I had were also top-notch!
Fish and chips were tasty.Asked for medium well on the burger, got rare.Server was attentive. The smoke from the grill was a bit much.
Attended a work event at Portsmouth Gas Light Co. Great atmosphere, fun night, bar staff was awesome! We had a buffet of finger foods early in the evening and a pizza and salad bar later. All the treats were tasty! Fun night and I hope to visit again soon!
Recently attended while in town for a wedding with a large group and were readily accommodated, taking the bride and her party in without hesitation. Bar service was attentive and consistent. Later as our group ran into an issue with another party, the security staff intervened in an incredibly professional manner and deescalated the issue as both parties were separated. During all this, a manager had spoken with the bride of our intent on grabbing food from their kitchen and they escorted us safely down and were very patient with us all the whole time. I very much appreciate the professionalism and patience displayed by everyone we interacted with and thank you all for the great night. I work in the industry and understand how differently everything could have been handled so I sincerely appreciate the effort.
The food and service is always top notch. Frequent dinner deal on Monday’s is a bargain. The staff are not doing half the work so we always tip on the full price bill. The chowder is filled with large clams and potatoes and very tasty. Love the lobster rolls, salmon dish, salad, and oh the pizza downstairs is some of the best you will find. Cozy atmosphere with lots of locals.
93 bucks for 2 salads and a couple of beers. Not that great. Way over priced and past its prime. Food is just ok and our waitress was nice. Just not worth it in my mind
A nice quiet place to eat during the week. Friendly staff, and great tasting food. This was my second time eating here and both times were great!
We asked for allergens to be left off our food, nothing crazy especially considering all the customizations they offer.1st delivery only brought 1 of our 3 items. Second delivery came with a surprise extra pizza that we couldnt eat because it contained allergens. We ended up getting a partial refund for the 2 items containing allergens and are using that $$ to eat elsewhere.
We had the clam chowder soups!Good portion for its price.Service was great.Food was excellent!
Honestly one of the best hot honey sandwiches that Ive ever had. Teri at the bar was amazing. Great spot, definitely going back while Im in town for work.
Get ready to wait while unattentive hosts leave you standing at the door for 10 minutes before finally realizing you are waiting to be seated. Food is mediocre at best and every time I’ve ordered out from there, they get the order wrong even with certain allergies (gluten free or egg). Staff is unattentive and could care less about the service they provide. Bar tenders hide behind computer and wait for you to ask for a drink instead of asking if you would like a drink or to see a drink menu. This is a poorly run restaurant with dismissive and rude staff and I’m sure the Gaslight only survives off its ridiculous $25 cover charges and drinks at their night club to float the restaurant as the food is subpar and staff is terrible. Not to mention it’s loud and obnoxious drunk UNH students and rowdy, someone literally died in 2023 from a physical altercation at gaslight which ended up in a group of guys chasing another man up the nearby parking garage where he fell to his death. Seriously save yourself the experience, and walk down the street to Thirsty Moose. Great staff, great food, friendly atmosphere! Or any nearby restaurant or bar, you’ll be glad you did.
I stop by every year on my trip out, fantastic lobster rolls, tremendous service and a great atmosphere. Abby always takes great care of us. The gaslight always sets me straight after a long day on the water!
Great afternoon with some friends and a few drinks. Best part was Abby the bartender. Great personality and lots of laughs. She even recommended that we come back tonight for the DJ Coco.
Abby was our bartender and she was fantastic. She literally ran up and downstairs to get a Red Bull for one of the drinks! Very friendly and great smile!
Huge disappointment. Been eating here for 25 years, always outstanding until now. Got a takeout pizza, was told the site was “glitchy” and the order wasn’t placed, putting it in now. No problem with that. Hit the car ready to tear into a slice and it was ICE cold. Congealed cheese to boot. Had to park so far away it wasn’t worth going back to complain. There is no way they made a fresh pie when I arrived. I got an Uber eats pizza last year, all the way in Rye and it was still warm and tasty. This pizza must have sat FOREVER. Ewww.
We stopped in for the 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. happy hour half price beers and appetizers. When we asked the lady upstairs about it, she said oh thats only applies to frequent diners. So we went downstairs to the pizza Pub area and mentioned it to our waitress. She was absolutely awesome she said, Ill sign you right up for that. Gave us great recommendations and had a super personality. We tipped her out nicely! So all in all, we love the place, but the upstairs bartender/ hostess could have been a lot more helpful and been a much better representative of a nice place. Also, its worth noting that if you find parking on the street and theres no parking meters, make sure you pay online with your phone. Portsmouth has a sneaky way of handing out parking tickets. Love the town but beware theyre out to get your money.
Very good pizza and the staff was super accommodating to handle the four of us strolling in at 11PM, coming straight from a wedding. The live music in the downstairs lounge made me want to stay, but apparently we needed to bring a pizza back to the bride and groom. Apologies to anyone who wanted pizza that night; they sold the rest to us.
Cant rate the food aside from the calamari, but these were delicious and I tend to get calamari at different restaurants for personal rating. Went here for a bachelor party and as busy as it was we were greeted relatively quickly. The environment was enjoyable as there was an outside patio with live music. The entrance fee was affordable and I did not mind paying.Selection of beers was nice as one would expect for the area to meet the demand of other competitors. The downstairs was a nice surprise. The group grabbed pizza afterwards and we didnt leave any left! They also have an upstairs night club that was part of the entrance fee which was a plus.
In Portsmouth for a couples weekend. Abby our bartender was friendly, attentive and very helpful with suggestions for the area. Great food, great drinks. Would absolutely recommend!
I gave my husband a surprise Retirement Party in the third floor function room and it was extraordinary. When I say that - I am referring to not only the beautiful room and huge, gorgeous bar but also the incredible, well organized employees. The event coordinator, Kate, is super nice, responsive, and also well organized (as one can tell - I’m a little obsessive about organization). These guys exceeded my expectations. They made sure my video was set to go whenever I needed it to and then was right there to make sure it happened correctly. The sound system and three screens (one pull down and two Large Monitors) were PERFECT. The party/celebration “vibe” or atmosphere was everything a celebration should be. Oh yes, and the food received compliments throughout the entire event from everyone.Kate, the coordinator did a great job fooling my husband as she walked him to the third floor. Husband said “I didn’t think you had a dining room up here”. “It’s new...” she responded as she texted me telling me my husband was coming down the hall! He was shocked and It was such a great time. I totally recommend this place.
Fun times! Good food and great service.Stopped by as they are dog-friendly and I had my pupper with me. Chose to do the deck area. I whiffed and picked out three things that Kira (waitress) had to return to tell me that they ran out of it, ha. Finally settled for short rib and gnocchi, with mussels to start.Mussels were good. I love seafood though, so I may be a bit biased. Broth was very garlicky (which is GOOD) but the mussels at the Portsmouth Brewery had more flavor (probably because of the beer broth). It was still very good though. My doggo wasnt as impressed. Also... mussels were pretty small this time of year, or maybe just small in general... I remember saying the same thing to myself at the brewery. No big boyos here.Short rib and gnocchi were also good, pretty flavorful. At about the time I was getting into my meal, the sky decided to sprinkle and then dump on me. I was the only dummy sitting in the open. The staff got me another short rib and gnocchi because they saw how I was getting soaked and how my entree and beer were getting watered down. I thought that was SUPER AWESOME of them to offer. My doggo was pleased with the short rib. #FineDoggoDiningAnd of course the other deets: A bit cramped with outdoor seating, but its fine when you dont have a fur baby with you constantly trying to turn around and sniff everything. Outdoor bar looks pretty nifty and is protected by an overhang. Gazebo where people can just hang. No people watching because theres a wooden fence that closes you off from the street. Service was great; Kira checked on me almost every few minutes after I told her I needed a bit more time with the menu. (Had to take care of the doggo first.) $60 for mussels, pasta, and beer, with a tip.Definitely will go again. Hopefully theyll have the other choices when I do, ha.
We had the cobb salad and a pizza, both out of this world. Our waitress Avery was an absolute DELIGHT, and we are definitely planning on stopping in again!
Very nice afternoon! Good food, good service, great beer selection. Felipe was a very nice waiter and he treated us well. Thank you!
We attempted to have a drink at this place because the ambiance seemed nice. It was 5:30 on a Thursday and we were told that we were not aloud to have a seat without ordering food. I was with my handicapped mother in law. We were offered to stand in the corner after ordering at the bar. There were a minimum of 15 open tables on the patio at this time. I took these photos at peak time of 7pm to show how many seats were still available! We went down the street to the brewery where our service was welcomed and actually ended up ordering some food anyway. As I understand the concept of this policy there are other ways to prevent these issues without the business denying money from customers.
Had been a while coming into the gaslight. Werent sure what to do for lunch. So we came in, sat down stairs and got Abby W for a waitress. She was personable and had a great personality. Will be back sooner than later.
We sat at the bar for my brother in-law’s 50th birthday gathering and Abby was an amazing bartender, who was always smiling and gave great customer service. We will be back again soon!
Angie was great as always in the Pizza Pub! We enjoyed a steak & cheese and Buffalo chicken dip. Angie was always attentive and fun. 5 stars.
Had the wings and gas light pizza. The mozzarella was perfectly stringy. Abby W provided us with super friendly service.
Love this place, pizza and wings are the best, also Mike and Alexa were a absolute pleasure great attitudes and great service, will definitely return.
The pizza was very good. We were a little confused though. First we were given seats upstairs. We looked at the menu and though there was a picture of a pizza on the back we were told that they didnt serve pizza upstairs and then we had to move to a table downstairs in order to have pizza. Sort of confusing.
Truffwl fries and salads were awesome! Service was friendly and on their game. Would highly recommend and plan to come back again!
EDIT: Thank you for the response. The surf n’ turf was $29, I incorrectly thought it was $39. Still very overpriced for what was given to us.If I could give zero stars, I would. We got door dash, and I understand the food isn’t likely to be as good as if you’re actually there, but this was downright pathetic. I ordered a build your own pizza and instead got the “children’s museum” pizza with toppings missing. At $3 per topping that should absolutely never happen. The receipt showed I was still charged for them even though they weren’t there. My boyfriend got the surf n’ turf, which was LITERALLY FOUR shrimp and maybe 8 steak tips. RIDICULOUS. Charging $40 dollars for that?!? Not to mention everything was stone cold when it got here (we aren’t that far of a drive). The fries were the best part of the meal, and they were mediocre at best. We definitely won’t be eating or ordering from here ever again. Just pathetic. And don’t bother replying with your copy and paste response of an apology that I’m seeing on other negative reviews.
Wow! Really good food and drinks as well as atmosphere. There are 3 levels to the restaurant. Lower floor (where we went) is the pizza pub. Brick oven pizzas and drafts. We got spinach and artichoke dip and Buff-A-Que wings. Both were soooo good. Then we got a gas light pizza and my wife built her own calzone. Pizza was one of the best I’ve had. We debated between this and Flatbreads but we’re happy with our choice here. Second floor is chicken, steak, and seafood and third is a night club. Would definitely recommend you checking it out. Very cool atmosphere and such good food.
I completely understand the lack of staff these days. That being said, our server tonight gave up. I can only guess our table was forgotten considering the table that was sat right before us had drinks and their order taken before we were handed menus. We gave our drink and food order at the same time. 15 minutes later, our server confirmed one of the two things we ordered. One dish came out first, fried clams. No plates, no silverware. After 10 minutes of waiting, I went to the host station to request them. When the second dish arrived, pizza, it was brought by our server and put ON THE MENUS! Tilted and lopsided, we carefully took out slices of cold pizza off the wabbling tower. We were only offered the first drinks. Im usually good for two beers. This was a date night, so dessert was in the plan too. The rest is history, but you could tell she knew she failed. Biggest disappointment we have had in 10 years, easily.
Good food, good service, great atmosphere. Loved the live music on the outside patio.
The owner responded to my review. The portion size for the fish and chips on Friday for frequent dining has been dealt with. The portion size is back to normal and maybe a bit more. I love the Gaslight and Im highly impressed that the owner cared enough to respond to my review. Im going for steak tips vegetable stir fry tonight. Monday the 26th of Feb.I had dinner there on Fri the 19th of Jan 2024 as a frequent diner. Fish and chips can be had for $14.50. Normally $29. Thats what I had. Unfortunately nobody is watching the portion size for that entrée. The server told me that my 2 and half inch by 1 and 1/2 piece of fish weighed out at 8 onces so was standard according to the chef. I know for a fact that the portion Ive had on other Fridays was well in excess of the portion I got this last Friday. Probably only half of the standard amount. Its happened on other Fridays also. Just not every time. I dont know whether Ill try the fish and chips again or not. Quality control is a major issue. I had dinner here last night also 1-22-2024 Mon night and sat at the upstairs bar. The gentleman beside me had the fish and chips and the portion was generous. I can only conclude that this restaurant is trying to discourage frequent diners from having fish and chips on Friday when the prices are half off. Seems like bad business to me.
We brought our adult children in to celebrate a birthday. We were told we could still order from the upstairs menu if we went downstairs but that if anyone wanted pizza, we could only get it downstairs. We went down and ordered our drinks. We were then informed that we couldn’t order from the upstairs menu. We almost left but it was cold out and I didn’t feel like dragging our gang of five around. I wish I had. The food was abysmal. Pita chips with the artichoke dip were stale and hard. The dip was barely warmed. Starved, we risked broken teeth to consume the chips anyway, mostly using them as a spoon to pick up the dip. Then our entries came out. The kettle chips with my burger (I had really wanted ribs from the menu upstairs) were stale. The fettuccine Alfredo had no flavor. The Mac and cheese looked and tasted like something from a box. The wood fired pizza was nothing special. All of this and we paid over $200 for food we took home to feed to the dogs. We did tell the server about our concerns but he just kinda shrugged his shoulders and said “Sorry.” I didn’t think places like this existed in a foodie town like Portsmouth but now I know better.
So we tried gaslight for the 1st time sunday afrernoon. I and my husband moved here about 6 months ago. Havent gotten around to trying it because we heard mixed reviews from friends. My sister in law told us to try the grill part, so we did. Our servers name was angie. I remember cuz its my daughters name. She was very good. (Also was the bartender) Checked on us a few times to see if we needed anything (even though she was busy). I had to send my food back. Angie did it with a smile & apologized for the mix up. How was she supposed to know the mayo was sour in my lobster roll (kitchen mixup) her good nature & great drinks made up for it. She handled the situation perfectly (Im big big on service) because of her is why I would give this place another try.
Love coming to visit gaslight when I’m in town! Always an upbeat atmosphere and the food and drinks are really good. The bartender Alexis makes a really good espresso martini and I always get the chicken parm sandwich!
Emma in the pizza pub was so sweet and friendly! She was a great server and the pizza was amazing!
I came on to write this review and was absolutely shocked that they have a 4.1 stars on google. After years of working in restaurants and growing up in a family that owned a few in Portsmouth, I tend to be pretty understanding of long wait times or nights where the service isnt great, but I was actually speechless at how horrible our experience was at the Gas Light last night (7/5). It wasnt our first choice to begin with, but they were able to take our party of 3 with no wait time, so we went for it. It took a solid 15 minutes for our server, Lizzie B, to even greet us. When she did, she asked for our drink orders, which we werent ready for as we had no drink menu. She went to find one and disappeared for another 15 minutes, in the meantime another employee brought us one. We ordered drinks and got them, and then ordered food. I got the poutine, my boyfriend got the fish and chips, and our friend got a veggie wrap. We waited for our food for an hour. All the tables around us, even ones that had been seated well after us, all got their food within 15-20 minutes of ordering. Once we got our food, it was horrible as well. The fish and chips was definitely the best out of them all, but everything felt incredibly overpriced. My poutine was disgusting. Not only did it look like canned dog food, it tasted exactly how I imagine canned dog food tasting as well. Ive attached a photo below. I was very hungry, so I tried to eat the plain French fries out of it. The fireworks (which we had hoped to go see, but our food took too long) started going off and all of the staff stopped working to watch them. I understand taking a minute, but everyone stopped working for about 10 minutes. Our server started bussing a table next to our, so I asked her for our check, which she said Yes, of course and then continued to bus the full table, and return to wipe it down. There was no party waiting for the table, and she should have gotten our check in that time. Once she brought it over, I already had my card out, as I didnt want to wait any longer. She took it and disappeared for another 10 minutes. She walked us multiple times without giving my card back. She also stopped right next to our table with a photographer, to take pictures in front of the fireworks. You cant walk around with someones credit card like that. She went back inside after, and then returned with our check and my credit card 15 minutes after I gave it to her. I absolutely will not be returning, and I cant believe you even allow this type of service to happen in your restaurant.
I ordered The meatball sub which said it came with either coleslaw or french fries, but when I got it, it was served with stale potato chips. The sub roll was so soggy from the marinara that the bottom split open, and I couldn’t even pick it up to eat it.
This was easily the worst restaurant experience Ive ever had. The three of us went there for lunch the day after Christmas. The service was the slowest Ive ever had. It took 10 minutes to get the table, not a big deal. An hour went by after ordering, and the salads hadnt even been brought out. She brings the mains, and says the salads are on the way. At this point we tell her to just forget the salads. All of the food was cold, and most of it removed from the bill. While we were waiting for our food a couple behind us just left after not even getting a drink 20-30 minutes after sitting down. We shouldve done the same.
Did outside dining, was great, music, good service, and the Hamburgers are really good, and get the gas light bucket, 👍
Went here on a date night in Portsmouth. This was our second stop so we didn’t eat but we sat outside and the atmosphere was great. Live cover band, I think there was a group there for a 30 year high school reunion so they were playing all the oldies my dad listened to while I was growing up, and the group cleared a spot out for dancing lol. It was a good time, the people were easy going and the staff were helpful, I couldn’t decide which beer I wanted and they brought of samples of both. They use cute lighting on the trees and the heating lamps so you’re warm even though it was a cooler evening. Was a really nice night.
Stopped by and was served by a rude unfriendly bartenderess. Oh, but if you were a local or she knew you she was all smiles. IPA was the WORST of the trip from Colorado. Didn’t help that we had just come Earth Eagle Brewing where the IPA was great. Total tourist trap! Fail! Oh and a pint glass of water with Lipstick!
Our dining experience was wonderful. Our server Felipe was pleasant and attentive without being intrusive.
Ive heard about the gas light quite often but Ive never actually gone until a couple of weeks ago. We were looking for a pizza and were pleasantly surprised by the pizza bar downstairs. Very cozy atmosphere with an old tavern feel but very intimate. The pizza was excellent! The pizza dough is fresh and you can tell that it was handmade. The staff was great and Im really glad that we stumbled into this place. Definitely worth a look! Cheap pizza but it doesnt taste cheap
Felipe we had dinner tonight at Gaslight. Felipe was our server and he was perfection…he made our experience perfect!! Thank you Felipe!!! We will be back!!
Absolutely love this place. Join the frequent diner program for great deals especially on Mondays. Have been coming here for years. The prices are quite reasonable for downtown Portsmouth. We eat at the gaslight pub downstairs. Service is very good, they work hard. Love the pizza and salads. Good variety of draft beer. Wings were particularly good also!!!
Stopped in because of a suggestion from the night nightclub staff. Food was wonderful and the staff was great! We came in before closing time and everyone was hospitable!! The mussels were delicious, and the curry was a tad too sweet but I still enjoyed my meal. Deffinetly would come back here for an upscale dinner.
After my wedding, we headed over to Gaslight for a casual post-reception after party. I forgot my ID, so the bouncer needed the manager to make the call whether to let me in or not (I get you need to ID people, but I was literally in my wedding gown and I’m 30 years old). The manager came out, looked me up and down, and shook her head no before rudely walking away (didn’t even have the bare minimum decency to use her words). The bouncer who was checking IDs was the only somewhat nice staff member we came across, letting us cut the line and he offered to wave the cover for both me and my husband. However, he was very rude to my officiant which I found out later.Once I had my ID brought over, I finally joined my friends and family out on their patio. Other guests were so kind and congratulating us on our wedding. While we were chatting with lovely strangers, I had several friends approach me with different stories of how rude and disgusting the bartender was being to everyone. Nearly every guest out on the patio that was not apart of our group co-signed the appalling behavior and attitudes, and were also on their way out because of it.We left shortly after and had a much better time at a closer bar. I also think it’s important to include that I had called Gaslight a few times in preparation for my wedding after party, so they were not blindsided by us. Whoever I spoke with was more than generous and excited for us to spend the rest of our night there. I wanted to be respectful of how overwhelming it can be to have 50-60 people show up announced at one time. Not sure what changed but all in all, an absolutely terrible experience across the board.Highly recommend Legends!
Abby W. Was fantastic. She was very engaging, personable and made us feel like family. We will definitely return.
Very consistently good food with good diversity. Love the restaurant and also hosted our wedding reception here! You can book private event in the third floor nightclub space. It does not feel like a nightclub when setup for event and has the nice, historic brick walls with a full bar and dance floor with plenty of light effects that are normally used with the nightclub too. Buffet meal setup was perfect for us and so easy just pick a few things in advance!
Nothing shy of a terrible experience. Went here with a group of people after a wedding, and we immediately received nothing but a less than enthusiastic welcome. A crowd full of people who work in the industry, who would’ve done nothing but offered respectful business, and who were left with no choice but to leave. The bouncer was rude, and his version of “just doing his job” was not someone I’d want being the first person to greet my guests. Not one, but two other staff members commented on how he is rude and disrespectful as well. I had asked to speak to a manger several times in hopes of clarifying any concerns and explaining our intentions of having a fun night in their establishment, and was given the run around of “I don’t know who it is tonight” or “I don’t know where they are”. It was suggested I go “knock on the window” of a parked minivan as it was the owner inside….And don’t get me started on the bartender. She made not only our party, but several other patrons on the patio feel uncomfortable with her dismissive and confrontational attitude. So much so, that people who were not with our party gave the bride cash to buy a round of drinks elsewhere as they witnessed and experienced her behavior first hand.Didn’t even get to buy a drink and I’m appalled I gave them the business of even my cover charge ($15 is what I pay to get into a club in Boston, by the way)I wouldn’t usually care to review someone’s business poorly on a public forum, but their own staff’s only resolution on speaking to someone about our concern was “leave a review”, so here we are.Save your time, money, and stress. We went to Legends both nights in a row unexpectedly and it was 10/10.
We frequent the pizza pub in the basement. My wife and I used to go solo, and now we take our two kids. We love the pizza (sweet sauce is the way to go),and beer selection. The only more recent issue is staffing issues of either newer or inexperienced staff. We do understand given all buissness are suffering the same fate.
Pizza was undercooked, all toppings with the exception of pepperoni and sausage were raw. Pizza was cold. Salad was alright. But the pizza was extremely underwhelming.
Awesome place! Food was fantastic! Service was great! We had the 3rd floor event room which was plenty big, great setting and views. We got a little bit of everything from the menu and all of it was delicious. Highly recommend this place for anytime or anything you want. Great job guys, please keep up the good work. Next time I visit NH this is the first place I’m coming back to. Thank you, from Texas.
Food was delicious, restaurant was super accommodating about my allergy, waitress amanda was phenomenal! 10/10 will be dining here again on my next trip to portsmouth!
All around great experience! Angie was a great bartender/server. Food was delicious. Glad we stopped in!
Great pizza! Cool dining options. Charles was a wonderful waiter.
We came with a group of 8 adults, 2 little kids. There was plenty of space, told in order to sit together wed need to go to the downstairs pizza pub, which was a separate menu. Since we wanted the main menu, we decided to stay in the main restaurant. We had to split up into two tables. Ok.The atmosphere was great, as well as the wait staff.Food wasnt anything special, I dont think the menu lived up to the expectations. The fish and chips were good. The braised short rib was strangely like slices of pot roast, not very good. Not a short rib experience. The scallops were fishy, leading some in our party to think they were actually just eating circular cut fish.Poutine was ok, gravy delicious but lacking actual curds that a real poutine has, more like melted cheese. Not sure we will return even though the atmosphere was great, and probably a good spot for drinks.
Lunch was excellent fish tacos and burger, fries were Delicious and hot.!!Brownie Sunday was enormous. Cant say anything bad, service was good. I would definitely return
We stopped in for the pizza but realized after we ordered drinks and sat down that it was downstairs. We stayed anyway. It was pleasant. Our waitress was super sweet and attentive. The fried rice was delicious.
Stopped by for a nightcap- cocktail menu had something for everyone. Exposed brick and beam interior gave the place a cozy atmosphere. Next time were trying the food
I ate my dinner upstairs at the grill and Angela was superb . very knowledgeable and very pleasant to deal with. Probably, the best bartender at the gaslight.
Fries and chicken tender apps were very good. Burger was okay. The meat itself was good, but it did not seem seasoned/had no flavor, just lettuce tomato and onion made for a very boring burger. No option for cheese or anything else. Watermelon margs (2) just tasted like sugar, very weak in a small plastic cup for $13 each I believe. Total bill, with tip, was about $85. Not worth it at all. Super lackluster and overpriced experience. The patio was cool with live music, but would definitely choose one of the many other restaurant options in the area next time.
The fish tacos are mouth-watering, and the Buffalo cauliflower was delish. This beautiful restaurant is a must stop when in Portsmouth! We just happened upon it as we wanted an early lunch on a Friday of playing tourist and will go back any time were down in Portsmouth. I accidentally left a bag of purchases there, and they had set it aside for me, and I was able to grab it the next day. Friendly and attentive server and a great atmosphere.
Alexis was awesome!! She took care of me and my party in a timely manner and was hilarious. Quality employee!!
Our Server, Abby W. was absolutely amazing, and the wings and the Gas Light Pizza was amazing! Will definitely be back!
What I like about this restaurant: dog friendly patio dining. What we didnt like: 1. Too many mosquitoes 🦟 coming from the bushes, the restaurant could have done something to provide a better outdoor dining experience. No grand parasol above the tables, luckily as we stepped out of the restaurant, the rain started pouring again. Dishes are too salty. Boiled greens beans were not soft, they needed longer cooking time. Baked haddock is better off without thr salty cramps. Same salty comments for bacon and blue goat cheese in the salad and chowder soup.
(upstairs) Unfortunately the experience and quality arent aligned with the price. There are many other, higher quality options in the area..
Really great! Loved the lobster roll, and Ella did a great job!
The bartender downstairs was a very interesting experience, unkind, angry, cruel, completely unsympathetic, and undeniably homophobic. We left in complete and utter shock at the treatment we received from her. It was the fat one. The bouncer was lovely though.
Angie is the best bartender I have ever had here. She is friendly, helpful and funny
What a joke!! Got kicked out of the club after 2 drinks and they wouldn’t even let us back in to get our stuff or inform the rest of our party that we were being escorted out. Club security was very unprofessional and acted like “tuff guys”. I have truly never felt as unsafe especially as a young women, then in the room the security guard pulled us into, which may I say, consisted of 3-5 “security” guards. I witnessed multiple people who needed to actually be escorted out and brought safely home. Police had to be called for the security staff to even treat us decently. Gaslight definitely lost a handful of customers tonight. Bartenders are super unprofessional and un educated in TIPS which is a standard bartending/waitressing course required in the field. Unfortunately Gaslight co gave me and many others (as I am hearing we are not the only ones) the most embarrassing, most disgraceful experience. Both their bar staff and security need to be professionally trained! As someone who drove almost an hour to have an experience here, I am more then extremely let down. If I could press legal charges I would, that is how bad our experience was.
Always have a delicious pizza when we are there! * can only order their awesome pizzas when u are downstairs at the pub. We were outside seating and had to move to basement pub to get what we really wanted. I think that could be updated a bit but love their pizza none the less!*
Carly was our waitress tonight and she made the experience that more enjoyable! Food? Delicious. Drinks? Wonderfully tasty! Thank you for the good time and accepting my pup on the patio! She had an amazing time as well
We were there this past week with a group of friends. Great service and yummy appetizers. We had three different types wings, and humus and Syrian bread. All delicious! There was a low of variety of beers offered the evening we were there. We had a great time nonetheless and our waitress was great. We ate outside at the street tables - fun and enjoyable!
I come in very often and sit at either the grill or pub bar and if Angie is working I always make sure to sit with her. She has the best personality and she is so kind. I highly recommend gaslight and if you go ask for Angie!!
Abby made our experience in portsmouth wonderfull. Her smile was a total mood lifter.
Very unfriendly staff, have had other women/ friends of mine cut off and asked to leave by themselves (we are all 21 year old girls) when they hadnt even tried to get drinks or have even been our DD. Throwing another girl outside at midnight alone on a Saturday night downtown is just wrong-- and unless we actively begged bouncers to allow our friends to meet us before leaving the building without a trace via the sketchy backroom, who knows what couldve happened. Coincidentally, one young woman employee/ bouncer person ? has been involved every. single. time. and when my friend asked why she was being taken to a back room, and why these people (who you cant tell are bouncers in the dark upstairs bar) want to isolate a young girl from her friends-- the response we got from staff members -- specifically the girl I previously mentioned, was borderline violent. Screaming and pointing in our faces to just listen and follow directions. She is a shortish blonde with long hair the color of fried chicken, and very clearly has some internalized hate towards other women, given that in one of the incidents a random man put his hands on my friend in a way that was inappropriate and violating but instead of gaslight employees holding the grown male predator accountable, my 21 year old girl friend was further victimized, guilted, and shamed by fried chicken hair. This place is just bad vibes, needless to say we will never be going back.
I decided to give them a second chance thinking maybe an off day but nope. The rudest servers in town. Was a few minutes late in joining my family. Went to meet them downstairs and was carrying my four month old and giant diaper bag. My husband met me at the basement stairs to help show me to our table when a server reprimanded us very loudly in front of many other tables that “ you can’t just walk in here and seat yourself you have to check in upstairs”. I calmly told them I was just joining my family who was already seated. She huffed off without an apology. Needless to say we paid the check and left. Will not be returning as this is now the second time we have not been treated kindly. Not sure how this place stays in business.
We had a group of 10 people celebrating a 50th bday. We had to sit at 2 separate tables with 3 empty tables in between our 2 tables-this made absolutely no sense. It was not busy at the time we checked in, we decided to stay upstairs as the menu has more options. We were told that the manager/owner did not want 2 tables next to each other. I would not recommend this place if you want to celebrate anything with a large party.
FRUIT FLIES IN LIQUOR BOTTLESThis place may look nice at first glance but do not do not order and drinks here. Food was really bad for me. I’m not a picky eater at all and i could not eat there wings. My colleagues were disgusted with the food. This place went down hill. Avoid this bar/eatery at ALL COSTS. Have McDonalds instead and try many of the other bars in Portsmouth.
WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO..tried taking my lady to the bar/ “club” upstairs, were there a mere 45 minutes and both started our second drink. Immediately got escorted out and refused service being told we were “too drunk”. All after an hour drive there. Will never return and do not recommend.
We stopped in because we wanted pizza and wings. After we got seated, they told us they had no pizza. Dont understand. But i did notice when we left that that place was diwnstaires. We decided to stay and just have a sandwich and wings. The food was good but the service was a bit slow. The place wasnt busy so i didnt get it. And its a pet peeve of mine when i dont get offered a refill on my drink. Which i did not here. Good thing we were traveling through so i can say, Ill never be back.
Chicken parm sandwich was made with buffalo seasoning and very little cheese. Mediocre at best.
DO NOT GOT HERE AS A PERSON OF COLOR!!! extremely racist bouncers felt very unsafe. Disgusted by behavior.
Staff is always friendly and the food id delicious!
Walked in here for a quick drink… awful. The Paloma was straight sour mix, didn’t even taste like grapefruit. The vodka drink was basically just soda. Waitress seemed absolutely miserable lol I’m sure this place is fine for a beer but avoid for cocktails.
Got there very late. Elizabeth took great care of us even though they were about to close. Sat at the bar and watched everything being made. Very talented staff.Cheesesteak exactly what we wanted and calamari great.
Food was good. Bartender was very nice and polite. Only downside was they advertised happy hour from 2:30 to 6. 1/2 price drafts. I was charged FULL price because I wasn’t a member of their club. THIS WAS NOT advertised as so. Be CAREFUL not to into their trap like I did. I left unhappy and felt like a victim of their trap! I won’t be back due to this bad practice.
Went here with some friends and ordered some pizza to share and some drinks. The pizza was cooked perfectly and pomegranate martini I had was delicious. Abby our server was wonderful and attentive! 10/10 will come back.
Angie is the Best! She always remembers what I like to order & makes an awesome martini!
The club bartenders were so rude for no apparent reason. They should not be working there with the attitudes they have and should not be expected to be tipped well after awful service to customers. Everything else was great besides the service I received after ordering multiple drinks.
I had heard good things about The Gaslight...very disappointed. The chicken in my sandwich was overcooked as you can see. The others were not happy with their items either. Pricing was comparable for the area I guess .I didnt have any but others enjoyed the buffalo wings.Wont return.
Mike was awesome! Delicious cocktails and amazing service!👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
Had a great time sitting at the bar! Got a couple apps and drinks around dinner time. Our bartender Corey was on top of things very friendly and took care of all our needs! He even made sure we had enough extra sauce! Look forward to visiting again!
Mike was attentive and good balance of humor and helpful. Just what we were looking for tonight!
What an amazing place to have a get together! Easy to work with, fair prices, great food and amazing service. Highly recommend!
Pizza was cold and had to argue for a military discount after showing my credentials. I think I’ll cease my weekly visits after this unpleasant experience. Fire Haley and I’ll consider returning.I’ve been going there for over 2 decades, but I’ve finally had it. The place has really gone downhill in recent years.
So many amazing restaurants and bars permanently closed after the COVID lockdown. Unfortunately, this place survived. The staff is hostile, rude, dismissive, vile, nasty, aggressive, unprofessional, lazy, unpredictable, and terrible. The bouncers love going on power trips. The cover charges are absurd. Skip this spot if you are in this amazing city.
Sat out back. Really nice beer garden vibe. Lucked out to be there on a night with GREAT live music. Shrimp tacos were delish! Our server Carly was fabulous!
Averie was awesome! We came in late with a big party and she was able to seat us all quickly and kept us fed and watered. Great smile, great attitude and fast service. Thanks!
The food was decent, but the wait was longer than we were told. The staff was running interference for the kitchen since they were so busy. My burger was not what I ordered (medium-well instead of the medium-rare) and the wait staff were short handed, so we werent checked on often, but they were nice. It has a nice atmosphere.
This was the worst experience I have ever had at a bar/restaurant. The staff was rude, unprofessional, and straight up confrontational with us. I can appreciate and respect how tiresome and exhausting it is to work at a busy bar, especially with local college students back in town but this staff was aggressively rude and short with us. Also $15 cover? Get over yourselves.
We enjoyed lunch at Gas Light specially Felipes friendly, attentive and professional service
The food service area downstairs from the club is very good. The food is excellent especially when youre tipsy, drunk nor whatever. The actual club is a joke. Very limited good or current music on the playlist. Always crowded for no apparent reason. But if you are looking for a place to just here music and be among crowd of people you dont know/mostly college students, Gas Light is the place for you.
Great experience. They were able to seat our party of 8 easily. Food was delicious. The brownie sundae is big!
Ive been there three times and all three times were very underwhelming. The atmosphere is all that it has going for it. One time they served raw pizza. They brought it to the table and the entire middle was not cooked: the dough was still pliable. Another time they charged a $10 add on to my salad that equated to three small bites worth of steak that was very salty. Lastly, they never seem to have things that are on the menu.
Absolutely fuego. If you know me you know I love Peter. And Mr. Peter Za was in the building. Got a build your own sausage and red pepper(banger combo). Washed it all down with a beer or two. The lady had some fettuccini Alfredo and she loved it.PBR score : 6 out of 7there wasn’t any PBR but you’d forget based on how tasty the pizza was
Nice place. Great selection of beer, friendly staff. I enjoyed my visit but I wasnt blown away by the pizza.
Great lobster roll, Kayla was awesome and friendly
I love the gaslight. Hadnt been in a while but the pizza is a great as I remembered. Cant wait to get some more.
My wife and I stopped in the basement bar on Saturday night. They had live music and the pizza was excellent. Highly recommended. We were visiting Portsmouth from upstate New York for a weekend getaway. The pizza was so good we may have to drive back for another visit
Terrible food. The bruschetta bred was old and dry and out of a fridge cold. 16 bucks for that bye. The fries are soaked and soft. I remember this place hanging terrible food but gave the beer garden in the back another try a year later. Next to the district the worst place in town to have food.
My wife and I stopped there last night after driving back from up north. The place seemed busy outside and the outside deck was busy... inside didnt seem that busy at all we decided to sit inside. they seated us in a room over to the otherwise which was perfect . The Server came over told us her name and wanted to take our orders for drinks. We had to take a couple minutes which was no problem and she came back promptly and did so.. We placed our orders for meals when she brought the drinks back which were only 3 appetizers. After 40 minutes of waiting… she came over to explain to us that the kitchen was getting slammed and they were backed up and things would be out very quickly no real apology nothing about it. She was serving the people outside quickly with their drinks I noticed that it almost seems like we will forgotten in that room. Another couple came in 15 minutes after we did and proceed to get their food 10 minutes before we did . Just as I was ready to get up and say to my wife lets go the waitress brought our food over to us. I have to say I was very disappointed. The chicken tenders came out like golf teas very well overdone like theyve been forgotten inside the fryorlater or sitting underneath a heat lamp. My chicken wings were rather overdone. The only thing that was good was the vegetables they had on the plate and the cauliflower that I had ordered.. The Server came over at 1 point and asked us if everything was OK, my wife had needed another drink so we never got a chance to really tell her that the food wasnt that good .When she bought the 2nd drink over which was only a Shirley Temple my wife had to reminded her to bring a straw which she went back and just placed it on the table in front of my wife eagerly getting off to another table. My wife barely ate her food and when the server came over at the end to ask us if there was anything else we said no and my wife explained to the server that the food wasnt that good and it was very overdone… no apology no Hey let me take the sodas you had off the bill or anything like that she promptly brought the bill over and said have a good day unfortunately I dont think we will be going back again.. too bad! understand in the restaurant business nowadays people are shorthanded and dont get me wrong Im not trying to throw anyone under the bus but This just wasnt acceptable. I know people will say why didnt you bring it to their attention. We would of if we had a server that came over and checked on things.
The food was very good. The service was untrained... The poor girl came to the table Didnt remove things from the table... I ordered another iced tea. She went and got it, came back and then asked if my partner wanted another iced tea while clearly she should have asked at the same time and brought them both together at the same time... She will learn
My wife and I had a great dinner. The service and atmosphere of the restaurant are great. Thank you and keep up the good work.
This place is a gas lighter. We had the hostess on Sunday October 23, 2022 at 2pm. The place was moderately busy. No lines and some tables open. The hostess was rude, uncaring, and in the end lied multiple times to justify why she treated us poorly and by the end said that our request to wait for a more private table was that is your problem. This was after she seated another couple who arrived after us and request the same table. This couple was not on a wait list as she claimed and did not have reservations. We checked with the couple. Which I admit is extreme, but I really dont like being lied to multiple times when a simple apology and allowing us to wait for another table would have sufficed. We didnt get a chance to eat as we had another engagement. It was a real bummer that customer service from the hostess was so combative and rude.
Stopped into Gas Light for a quick bite to eat before checking into our hotel for the weekend. Wow, was it a bad way to start off our vacation. This restaurant has three separate eating areas and separate menus for each which made it very confusing at first. We chose to eat on the outdoor patio after visiting the cellar pizza area and deciding against it. The band music is so loud that you cant hear anyone at your table. The wait staff is horrible, some of the worst I have ever seen. Seems to be all very young and inexperienced staff who are constantly looking at their phones, not practicing proper hygiene, and no common courtesy. Watched a waitress who was clearly sick wipe her runny nose with her bare hand and then continue to work. Saw some guest walk into our area while the hostess(?) was leaning on the booth looking at her phone so much so that she didnt notice they were waiting to be seated until a while later. All have a RBF and act like customers are an inconvenience to them. Food is below average. Ordered the calamari which wasnt fresh and did not taste good. The chicken wings were decent. Drinks and food served on paper plates and cups. Extremely overpriced with horrible service and below average food. Will not be coming back and highly suggest to anyone considering going here to save your money and try someplace else like Lazy Jacks or Portsmouth Brewery.
Had a great meal. We had fish and chips ... their homemade tartar sauce was so good. One of the best weve ever had.
The food was delicious and came out quickly. Our bartender was friendly and kept up an open conversation with multiple customers while still keeping up with drinks and orders. Its smack in the middle of downtown Portsmouth so even when we had a little wait getting into the restaurant we had a great time seeing the historic buildings right there in the surroundings 😄
Was in town read had a good happy hour according to reviews when we got there the bartender stated oh no only for frequent diners u have to sign up then she said on Monday menu half price all day I said great was charged full when questioned again only for frequent diners first of all if u r out of town and its false advertising on line. by accident the waiter dropped our food on us not his fault. good business could have bought us a drink since food was on my drink she just replaced it
This was my second attempt dining here. The first time they refused our party of 8 because they didn’t want to push 2 tables together that were in different sections. This time we got a seat on the patio- which is so cute! I ordered a prime rib sandwich for 19$ they charged me 4 extra to substitute a salad over fries. When the sandwich arrived, I questioned the waitress if this was normal for the sandwich to be so small? It was served on a ciabatta role (small one) and had 2 small pieces of prime rib a little cheese with 3 mushroom slices and a few onions. While the two bites I had of this sandwich were satisfying- I think I could have been more fulfilled with a sandwich from arbys. I order prime rib/ French dip all the time and this was surely the saddest smallest one I’ve ever had. My friend ordered the lobster role and did not like it/ did not eat it. Drinks were good. The other two ladies ordered chicken tenders and a haddock sandwich and both were satisfied. I would return for drinks but not for food. Waitress left our plates on the table for a long time which made the flies flock to our table. I would return, but likely just for the drinks!
The food and drinks were incredible and our waitress was friendly, attentive, and clearly well trained. The only negative was (due to understandably short staff in the kitchen) we waited 50 minutes for our food. Ill definitely still be back, and Id still highly recommend the place to anyone visiting Portsmouth. If I could give 4.5 stars I would, but since I cant I guess Ill round up.
Oh man!!! Great options for ears for whatever youre in the mood for. But we chose to go to the basement for pizza. We were NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! The basement was cozy and very awesome as was the food. Great service and unbelievable pizzas!!!! Cant wait to go back!!!!!
We go on Mon eves- great deal. Thank you.
We had a family party there on the third floor and it was great. Food was good...a little harder to get the same quality for a large function then you receive just dining there, but it was still great. Service was mostly fantastic.
Small menu but decent variety. I also speculate this as a changing menu so that there will be more variety in the future. Seafood, beef, pork and poultry. Sandwiches, a full bar, wine, and beer. The usual. I went mac and cheese with lobster on board. Of course it was awesome. My server was fantastic, the order was taken quickly and served in a perfect amount of time. Typical of Portsmouth is the atmosphere. Historic with great updates inside. Brick, timbers, with a warm cozy feel. 4 stars only because of the menu. Should be 4 1/2 stars. I recommend this venue and Ill be back someday.
