I really wish I ate here as the food looked amazing. We stopped on a Sunday after traveling about 5 hours. We stopped in for some of their many beers on tap. Everything we tried was amazing! We were pleased to try many different beers with their 6 pours flights. We sat at the bar in the back watching all the food from the kitchen go by and everything smelled amazing. We decided to try out other places and regret leaving this amazing establishment as the service was better than other places we stopped at in Portsmouth. Great job all around!
Thirsty Moose, indeed! There is something for everyone on tap at the Thirsty Moose. There must be thirty or more taps lining the bar. There is both outdoor and indoor seating, and extensive beer menu, and many favorable apps, sandwiches, and more to choose from if you are a little more than thirsty. We ordered a flite of beers so we could sample the offerings from several local breweries. And we had a fish sandwich (fresh and delicious) and the Mediterranean wrap (hummus, carrots, veggies and more).Staff were friendly, happy to hold the onions on our orders, and helpful in choosing from the many beers.
Lively, sports watching-friendly spot in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Friendly, efficient staff, delicious pub food, and 5 pages of beer choices, almost all of which are local or regional. Our favorite appetizers were the loaded fries, nachos, Brussels sprouts, and pretzel (I loved the mustard, everyone else raved about the cheese). My tasty beer was from Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. in Waltham, Mass.
Very good experience overall. The service was slow, and it was extremely noisy, but that could be attributed to the fact that it was an overcrowded night. The crowd after the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and parade settled in there partially. We had a sampler of IPAs and liked them all. I also had 2 different stouts, and really enjoyed them.My streak tips were incredibly delicious and perfected to medium rare.We also had a burger with gorgonzola cheese, which was perfect.Or son had an impossible burger, pretty good
This place was great! My girl and I stopped in to have lunch and it was a great experience. She had the tips & tender meal, and I had the burger with egg, bacon and cheese and some special sauce. Both meals were perfectly cooked, well plated and presented. The value is great.... good amount of food for a good price, and Jordan our server was awesome. She was attentive but not intrusive. They also offer beer flights, which I was very happy to find. The 100 beers on tap really makes this place a real gem to visit. Really great atmosphere for a date.
This was a cool little place. Friendly and fast service, the sliders were the perfect not hungry with for lunch but need more than just a snack size, and while I ordered a diet coke, the tap selection is impressive, with multiple local and regional Breweries featured and so many different types of beers. If Im ever in Portsmouth for the night and not just passing through, Ill definitely check the tap selection out, and when if Im passing through, Ill still stop in for lunch again.
I am staying in Maine and wanted to watch Georgia play football on Saturday. I found this place online and it is huge! I sat at the bar, and it took forever to get served. They were busy and clearly did not have enough staff.I was disappointed that out of 50 tvs, there was only one small screen with the Georgia-Mizzou fame on. They had most on the Oklahoma-Penn State game for some reason.I had the North Country Fire Starter Cider and it was surprisingly good. I didnt eat, but those sitting next to me had apps and they looked good.
Came here with an 11-person bachelorette party and had an amazing experience! It was my first time here AND my first time in Portsmouth. Our server Ali/Allie (I forgot to ask how to spell her name, apologies!) was such a sweetheart dealing with all of us and our split bills! She was super friendly and asked all of the right questions to ensure that we all got exactly what we asked 😁 definitely will come back when Im in the area again! The atmosphere was great and the portions were large. Definitely get your moneys worth!
Fun place for a late night drink. Lots of local drafts to choose from! Decent amount of seating and huge screens for watching the games. Theres a speakeasy downstairs too, with a cover fee of $5 which is what the bouncer told us as we came in. We didnt check it out though since we only wanted a little drink and sit down. Would definitely come back since the atmosphere is fun and the staff are friendly.
It was our first time stopping by the thirsty moose in years, the renovations look really amazing theyve done a good job! I couldnt believe the kids meal prices it makes us definitely want to come back again. The pizza was cooked to perfection and attentive waitstaff. My loss of 1 star is because there isnt a veggie pizza on the menu, there is margarita but thats not really very exciting.
Came back, glad we did. Service was excellent. We were seated right away, party of 5. Our server gave us our drink order right away. However we waited a long time for our apps and then food. Our waitress didnt check in on use. Food was delivered by a runner. Our drinks were empty for quite awhile. Food was good. Great place to watch Celtics.
This was our first time trying this place even though weve lived in New Hampshire for some years and visited Portsmouth often-we were very impressed all-around. Super clean all throughout the bar, friendly staff, great selection of beers, and the food was very good. My husband tried the flight and loved everything he tried, and we got fish tacos and they were very delicious and well done (thats coming from former California natives okay). The music they were playing was a great mix of oldies and various genres, and the perfect level. They have specials wed love to come back for-BOGO pizzas on Mondays, $10 beer and burger Tuesdays, and trivia Wednesdays!
Foods great! Its atmosphere is perfect for sports and beers. Its what you wish buffalo wing wings was, and exceeds that.
Wow is all I can say. From the moment we walked in on a poppin Saturday night to when we left 5 hours later. We were greeted by a calm and friendly host even though there was about 20 people waiting for a table. We ended up waiting only 25 minutes to then be greeted with a wonderful waitress (we forget her name so sorry we were sitting right by the bar). She was so kind and after she learned we were out of town convinced us to check out the downstairs for an amazing cover artist band “Fighting Fridays”. We had the best night ever in Portsmouth thanks to the thirsty moose. 5 stars!!!! What a wonderful establishment oh and the food and drinks were incredible!!!!
Nice waitress, plenty of beer. The fried pickles and peppers were good. There was a lot. We also got a prime rib pizza it was pretty good, but there was hardly any meat on it. The pizza wasnt worth the price.
Excellent beer list. Very mediocre food. 2 of 4 dishes came out wrong but server was nowhere to be found and staff we asked came back 20 minutes later and by then we were past point of interested in fixing
We decided to visit the Thirsty Moose on Sunday, 07/28 since it was close by to what were were doing prior. Entered in and there was a line at the hostess stand. She seemed to be doing everything...seating/takeout/answer phones. We finally made it thru the line and got seated, the waitress came right up to us and got us settled w/ drinks. Ordered some food, and it was taking a while and she apologized and said the kitchen was backed up, and has been all night. Finally our food came out.....mediocre at best. We ordered sliders, fries, pizza and nachos. The sliders werent great, overcooked and bland, the pizza was just ok and the nachos were awful.....you can tell that the nachos were made first and then just left to sit there waiting for the other meals to be done cooking. The cheese was no longer melty and the chips were getting soggy. The star of the show was the french fries..... we also had to ask the waitress for numerous things, and only got the silverware we asked for. I wanted to like this place, and the other reviews seem great. We live pretty close by, IDK if it was just an off night for them, but I dont think I will be revisiting.
Great craft beer list and vast array of delicious comfort food. Homemade chicken fingers are the best that Ive had in a long time. Plenty of huge screens to watch the game with lots of seating
Great place to grab a beer and pizza at. The atmosphere was homey and relaxed but still felt like a professional establishment. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food and beer selection were vast but refined, definitely a good quality place to refuel for the walking around Portsmouth. 10/10 would recommend!
This place is trash. Kicked out our entire wedding party for no good reason. Claimed we were “creating a fire hazard” because we weren’t close enough to the walls. If there was a fire we would run. There was no problem. I’ve worked in the service industry my entire life and I have never seen an establishment throw out a massive group of well behaved adults spending money and treating their staff with respect. Absolute garbage.
We were looking for a good place to grab lunch and a beer. Happened to come across this place while walking through the center of Portsmouth and decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is fantastic (narrow space with exposed brick and mirrors) and the staff are great (lots of great energy, polite and efficient). I ended up getting a Rocky Burger with fries. Easily the best tasting burger Ive had in a very long time. The burger is made with a house dry rub which perfectly seasons it. It also has fantastic onion rings made with red onions, crispy bacon, cheese and a sweet BBQ sauce on a brioche bun. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned (not too salty). My friend opted for the pulled pork sandwich and she said it was fantastic! Our beers were perfectly poured and tasted great! The prices are reasonable and well gladly come back!
Food is mediocre at best, on top of that they’ll nickel and dime you for everything, want a burger? You will be charged extra for lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo. If I’m being honest, McDonald’s is probably a better value and tastes the same.
Visited the Thirsty Moose in mid Feb 2019. Its a stereotypical, low light bar with big TVs, tons of beers and no-nonsense bar food. It was trivia night when I visited. The service was excellent. Quickly seated and served my beverage. Ordered two different drafts which came cold and quickly. They had a Mexican theme that night: $2 Tacos, $1 Chips & Salsa and $2 Coronas. I avoided the Corona but had the tacos and chips.Chicken tacos were pretty good but the beef tacos were better. Smothered in some Cholula hot sauce, these tacos were great considering the price.Id definitely recommend visiting the Thirsty Moose.
Great spot for a burger and beer!!! Stopped here while in Portsmouth. Wife had a wrap and I had a burger. Too many beers on tap to count. Staff were all great and the beer was Cold!!
The night before a wedding when at least 40 people are bringing you in positive conversation and socialising with a range of their invitees, from the bride and groom to their aunts, uncles, cousins from Europe, to be treated with such appalling service and attitude from the staff and security! It really does make me question the kind of bar this place is trying to be! Get your act together - if you dont want people to gather or chat in a certain area on the floor, of which you have plenty, do not put a table there for people to gather around! How dare you take full drinks from your clientele and then refuse to serve anyone at the bar simply for standing in the wrong place or asking for table service. Never in my life have I experienced security asking customers if they have been asked to leave in such a passive aggressive way to try to intimidate you when you are drinking soda and talking to your mom and aunt! Get your service together Thirsty Moose, people do not visit Portsmouth from out of town to be met with such abysmal attitude from the service industry. Your beautiful town outshines you!
Decent selection of beer but tough to get a server to bring them. Eventually got a new server and he was much better.
I had the steak tip and chicken tenders with fries. The steak tips were marinated perfectly and very tender. The chicken tenders were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The fries were crisp and the meal came with a ranch dipping sauce. My boyfriend order a burger with waffles fries. He said it was juicy and flavorful...he ordered a leaf of beer, and they had over 100 beers on tap.
Stopped at the Thirsty Moose for a snack and a beverage. The menu has a nice assortment of foods ranging from snacks, burgers, nachos, steak tips and Prime rib on the weekend. There are about 85 beverages on tap. The menu lists the selections assorted by style; IPAS, Pilsners, Lagers, etc. A great place that we will visit again and try a few entrees which looked great!
Food is good. Prices are okay. Service is the worst! I’m not sure why our waitress was treating us like peasants but her attitude completely ruined our experience. It’s not okay to treat people like they don’t deserve your service. Such a strange way to act in the service industry… Never again!
Went here to watch the Arsenal Liverpool soccer game on a Saturday afternoon. I called ahead and they said they would put the game on. I was seated at the bar (separated by at least 3 stools from other patrons) and they let me pick whatever I wanted on the central TV (they had about 5 right above the bar). The tap list here is phenomenal. So much to choose from. I spent a decent amount of time looking up beers on UnTappd so I could have some of the best they have to offer. Great spot for sports and beer lovers alike.
The Thirsty Moose has a great seating area out front street side. First walking into the restaurant area it was a little dark and you could definitely smell the beer..... Which is expected since they have a CRAZY amout out beers on tap.The buffalo dip was really good. The chicken fingers were good.... Nice and crispy.Tried the pineapple mojito which was well balanced with flavor.Had the mango pineapple cider which was good.... Still think Ricker Hill cider from Maine is one of the best. The best thing we had was the friedJalapeno, pickle, cherry pepper slices .... DEFINITELY order a basket.... BIG fan !
Gigantic beer Selektion. Great food, especially the wings. Pleasant wait staff. Just on the very loud side with all the TVs blasting.
Truffle fries were great!! The cheeseburger sliders and wings were good, nothing out of this world. Cool atmosphere!
Wings are always outstanding, haven’t had a flavor I haven’t enjoyed! Favorites: mango habanero, firestarter, Caribbean jerk. Blue cheese on point. (For the vegetables, wing sauces are too good on their own to taint) Moose Mac pizza is a real treat when you’re crushing barley sodas with the fellas. Service is always solid!
Ive never seen such a hugh selection of beer on tap! 👍 The Nachos were ok .They needed some vegetables like lettuce ,tomato and onion with some sour cream and guacamole, would have made them out of this world , delicious!!!
Always amazing food and service! Fun atmosphere and friendly service! Great location!
I had been to Thirsty Moose a few times as I live locally. Attended a cousins wedding with family and friends and was met with such unfriendly and unpleasant service. Security guard on a complete power trip and talking to people like animals with no respect whatsoever. I will never return and left such a poor taste with all the visitors to Portsmouth
Excellent beer. It is a great menu with many options. Staff was very helpful, Lily was great and knowledgeable.
We loved our visit here. Our server, Lilly, was exceptionally helpful and attentive. The staff changed channels on two TVs for us so we could watch two different football games. The food was delicious and well portioned. The beer selection is mind-blowing.
Our waitress was super nice, and the food was delicious. Nice environment, large portion sizes, and fantastically cool in temperature. It was like a hundred degrees out when we decided to dine in and the air conditioning was very appreciated. They had a large variety of American dishes, we found something for everybody in the family including the children- pizza, mac n cheese, Buffalo wrap, grilled chicken BBQ cheddar bacon sandwich. All hits with the family. It was great to watch the various sporting events on TV while we waited for our food to arrive. Got a table right away, and went during the lunch hour on a Thursday. The decor was neat as well. Only downside was parking, which we had to a few blocks away, but thats very typical with downtown areas.
Great spot! The food is pub food but its good. The draft beer selection is huge! The atmosphere is nice, great live music in the basement, a haven for local bands. Service is good as well. This location recently got a much needed renovation, they added a lot of space upstairs and downstairs. Great spot to catch a game. Service is solid.
Fun place with great food. Our server was really friendly. Would definitely go back!
This is one of the nicest bars I’ve been to! You’d never think this place is as big as it is from the outside in downtown Portsmouth. Once inside, it goes deep and is lined with TVs for the sports lovers. A huge bar, but we didn’t sit there. Awesome wooden top tables. Excellent service. The food was AMAZING! Portions were huge and the prices were incredible! Our table tried burgers, Mac n cheese, and chicken fingers, along with fries and waffle fries. None of us could finish our food. It was absolutely delicious. We should have come with a larger appetite! One dessert…the fried dough balls…served or whole table. We also had a one-year-old and they had high chairs and special cups for little ones. If we lived closer, it would definitely be a favorite place!
Great place to watch games. 2 big bars. Love the renovations. Pizza and nachos were very good. Big selection of beers.
Our waitress was pleasant but not attentive. Not that we needed much attention. It was an hour and 15 minute wait for sliders and chicken fingers. I had to wait an additional 15 minutes for her to return our change that had to be handled by a manager because she couldnt handle $100 bill! I will never go back to this place. Its cool. Its a great atmosphere but I have a job to do and I cant wait that long for lunch!
The food was great with generous portions. The service was top notch. The reason for only 4 stars is that its a very popular place in the center of the Portsmouth waterfront and its quite busy. Although we didnt have to wait for a table, it was very loud in there and my party of 5 had a hard time holding a conversation without having to yell
Great watering hole, ton of beers on tap, plenty of good grub to choose from, two bars upstairs and one with live tunes downstairs. We stop here on our way up to our Maine cottage at least once a month. Lively bar, usually packed with college kids or tourists looking for a hopping spot. It’s a long narrow restaurant with plenty of bar room (fills up quick), high top tables (fill up quick), or standing room (also fills up quick). This place is the spot to be if your looking to turn up or pre gram. Tunes are always playing, ton of big TVs for the game, maybe 50 beers on draft, and the best smoked wings around. We started with a couple brews, I got a local IPA and switched over to heavy poured jack and coke, perfect. We got the wings (sauce on the side, saucing these is a true sin), added some moose rolls that were tasty, and really good buff chick dip. The grub was so good I forgot to snap pics.Service was great, bartenders are friendly and attentive but not bothersome.Only thing, parking can get rough cuz dtown Portsmouth can get craZy. But don’t let that stop you.
We stop up here a few times a year and its always consistently good. Great food very friendly and helpful wait staff.
Awesome memories made! Place is huge in size. Great drinks, great food and wonderful bar staff!
Excellent beer selection. Most places have soooooo many IPAs and like 2 stouts and maybe a porter. The Cuban was delicious. The pickles still had a very slight cucumber taste. Even the fried pickles did. My boyfriend and I always get Reubens everywhere we eat (if theyre on the menu) and this one was not a disappointment. Theres a place in Rhode Island that serves very original Reubens thats been our favorite for a while. The thirsty moose is better in my opinion. My boyfriend agrees. The prices are decent. Good mixture of people. Staff was nice but not all in your face every 5 minutes. Only complaint is that its so dark we had to use our phone flashlight to read the menu.
We held our work party in the downstairs area. Friendly wait staff, fun atmosphere, the moose took great care of us. They even let our drunken bosses ramble incoherently on their PA. Couldnt recommend the place enough. The only minor let down was the chicken wings, were a bit dry and chewy, and we shouldnt have ordered so much pasta salad.
They literally kicked our group out for just standing around. And then refused to serve us. No one was intoxicated... Just having fun hanging out with one another.
So much beer on tap!!! The Thirsty Moose has the most impressive beer selection around. The food is also really good; plenty of American pub style choices. And lets not forget to mention the incredible waitstaff! I highly recommend, and cant wait to go back!
Great place with a fun atmosphere. Gosh and chips were really good.
If you go to Portsmouth NH then this is a must visit. The burgers are absolutely fantastic and the pulled pork sliders were the bomb. The atmosphere is comfortable. Our server Jordan was one of the nicest young ladies we have met in a long time. She was always there but not overbearing and had a great sense of humor. She made our dining experience very entertaining and enjoyable. If your in the areas then check out the Thirsty Moose I guarantee you will not be disappointed
Very cool spot. The food was great, the drinks were good, and the service was fast and friendly
Very big inside. Great for sports and great craft beer selection. Food was delicious. Its a great stop if in the area. Younger crowd.
Lively, comfortable place to dine and drinkFood is excellent as is service. Large selection of beers and ciders
Food is very good. Service is great. Theyre wings are awesome. The only complaint is that the music is way too loud. The waitress completely agreed with us and asked them to turn it down which they did but barely. It was difficult to have a conversation without practically yelling and leaning half way across the table. We even saw a family leaving with their two kids plugging their ears with their fingers. I get lots music at a bar or later in the night but not for the earlier dinner crowd.
Food was very good. Would definitely come here again. Love the big screens to watch sports. The over music playing in the background was techno. It was loud and not very pleasant to listen to.
Awsome place. Great food. Staff are fantastic as well.
Great beer and food list. Lots of TVs for sport watching. Far too bright, need to dim the lights!
More focused on maximizing their revenues than hospitality.Good beer selection and decent food, but its all a formula for them.Too bad, used to be nice place. The Hammer is more friendly
Great diverse menu, oversized portions, sooo many draft beer options
Dropped in on a whim and was not disappointed. I only got a pretzel and some wings, but they were fantastic. Got the spicy garlic sauce if you were wondering. My server was great, and totally attentive. Ive been talking about it ever since my visit so I definitely know Ill be returning to really get into the menu.
Really good food and drinks. Our waiter wasnt as friendly as other staff weve had at this location but that will not deter us from coming back. We do love that they kept the outdoor dining so we get to enjoy the perks of downtown like live music being played by people on the streets.
Stopped in for a beer and they had a huge selection! Over 70 taps, and the menu describes each one well so its easy to choose. It has a very long bar with plenty of seating and a large restaurant also.
Great atmosphere and excellent beer selection on tap. Certainly more than Id be able to try in a weekend. The food was generally standard bar food but I was really impressed with the garlic tator tots. It was also the first time Id tried an impossible burger (bahn mi style) and it was good. My friends all had standard bar stuff.Noise was the perfect level for bar conversation among friends.
I’ve been 3 times now. First two times were amazing, but my last trip tonight wasn’t as great. I usually get a burger, but I branched out and tried the prime rib dip. Bread was amazing. The roast beef was very over cooked, the sauce on the bread was much too strong, and the juice was just grease with no flavor. I will definitely be back, but won’t be getting that sandwich. $20 for that was very low quality for the $16.99 burger that’s unmatched.
First time here, super fast service. Our waitress (red hair) was excellent. Very good bar food, burger pizza apps all the way around we were very happy. Gotta get back there for a football game asap!!
Great draught selection, knowledgeable bar tender, very good rueben. TV screens behind the bar are a bit overwhelming, but Ill bet its a great place to watch a game.
Feelin fine, great place to dine. Fish tacos are my weakness... and these did not disappoint! Fried pickles & peppers were outstanding as appetizers! 603 & Lunch were gtg as well ... all good food at our table, everyone happy :)
Just stopped in for a beer and boy is there beer! Excellent selection, great atmosphere and outstanding service.
Super draft selection.... Good was tasty. Tvs everywhere!
The food was great. I had a hamburger .But about 2 hours later, i was puking my guts out from it. Im not sure what was going on. I do not drink, so it wasnt that. But yeah, the burger was good
Ive always liked it here, and I like it even more now since the renovations. They pour a good Guinness
Amazing beer menu!! Food was very good, many sides to pick from, tater tots, waffle fries, side salad. Sweet potato fries, Brussel sprouts, good Size portions. Reasonable
Make sure you like hockey if you go into this establishment. Every TV had the Bruins/ Islanders game on, and I guess thats to be expected!Burgers were good, cooked to your specs, and portions were plentiful. Cool old school neighborhood bar vibe. But nice enough to take the wife and kids. If you like craft beers definitely the place. My coworker excitedly tried at least four different brews during our meal. Dont know what dessert was like but you dont go to a place like this for dessert!Easy to walk to from a few local hotels.Would definitely visit again when working in the area.
Too many beer choices lol never too many. Good food fast and friendly if you like beer its a must go.
If you graduate high school before 2005 this is a great Playlist for enjoyment while hanging out. Whether its dinner with the family or drinks with the friends, I recommend this spot!! So far the food I have tried has been really good. Many beers on tap as well. Really like the updated look inside as well!!
Recently had a beautiful remodel but went yesterday for the 1st Sunday of NFL, and they were only playing red zone on all of their thousand TVs! Asked the manager to set to one game and he refused because he would have to reboot the Direct TV system. Do it at Halftime you Dope! Total ball drop by the manager!
The girl with black hair and the tatooos is a terrible employee. We asked for her attention as she passed by and she gave the “one second” symbol (pointer finger) and then proceeded to walk straight by and never return. Terrible service, left a poor impression.
Was denied service due to my friends accent which was deemed him being wasted even though we were far from it! Will not be back in the future, poor management. Would’ve loved to get some food and drinks as this used to be a great a service but has gone down hill. Beware!!!
My fiancé and I went Saturday 3/18 at 4:45. We were interested to see the renovations. We have been 3-4 times previously and it was fair-good. This day it was packed. There was a 15 minute wait for a table but we were trying for seats at the bar. The bar was understaffed, which we get, lots of places are. We always bring our patience. However, so much was wrong aside from the number of staff. They were not ready for this re-opening and it showed in the service. We eventually got seats at the bar. We were lucky to get a beer. After an hour, that’s all we got. We couldn’t get anyone to take our food order. The four bartenders were all in the weeds. The couple next to us sat without being acknowledged for 20 minutes, but they were good about it also. We felt for the staff. Four managers appeared at different times and none cleared the dirty food dishes that had been sitting in front of people for ages or got anyone a drink. The stuff that would have really helped. Meanwhile at any given time we could see 3-4 hostesses standing at their station talking doing nothing. No manager thought to utilize one to bus the bar. Just incredibly poorly run. Eventually, we left to eat at Bugr-Bar, which was fantastic. The renovations look good, they have a good beer selection. I wouldn’t go back, at least not when it’s busy. The staff was working hard to get through, management hadn’t a clue.
We enjoy every meal we’ve had here. The beer, the pizza, the steak tips and tenders are all 5 stars. The service and the music are fantastic as well. Our kids loved the max and cheese.Lots tables and TVs, great atmosphere.
My first time here was FANTASTIC! Food was excellent and the server we had was wonderful! I went back and had a server w/no personality, never came back and asked how we were doing... we felt like we were bothering him... I should have called to complain and I did not. He still charged us for an Appetizer we did not get (I changed the appetizer choice and he seemed bothered that I asked him to do that-$12 Ill never see back). He sighed when my husband flagged him over to order another drink (we should not have to wait until our glasses are empty for a refill of beer, that is not free refills so maybe he should not work in customer service). I am a firm believer that if you have a bad day (fake it until you make it with customers or dont come to work) Ive worked in customer facing role for years and would never treat anyone the way he did. He also sighed when we asked for boxes and rolled his eyes several times. VERY UNIMPRESSED!However, since my first experience was so wonderful, I will be back! But if I see that guy, I will request another server. I also left him a note why he did not receive a tip. Im super nice when I go out because I know what it is like to work with people. Im nice and receive service like that... so sad.
Newly renovated, The Moose offers an unparalleled selection of draft beers, combined with an attentive staff and nice food menu. The quality of the pizza was surprisingly good. Vegetarian options are limited and a preview of the menu is suggested with attention to prices which are on the high side.
Used to be a good place. the bands they book are awesome. new crew of young bartenders are the worst i’ve ever seen. came in with a well dressed group of adults. Bartender kept serving college girls that came up to the bar over and over while we stood there waiting for almost 15 min. when. the last young girl showed up and he looked over us to take her order, I said “i’ve been waiting for you over 15 min and she just got here” he said “now youre getting nothing!” unreal that they give these punk kids so much power. we’ve been coming here for years, tonight was our last time.to be clear, this was the downstairs crew. short bartender with an attitude. upstairs crew was greatUpdate: Got a call from the manager. He communicated very well. I feel my complaint was heard and we will be back!
Did not eat but the band downstairs was awesome. Everyone was having a great time
Must try the pb&j burger, fantastic all around place
I brought my grandson there to celebrate. We stepped outside for a moment only for me to be denied entry back in. They would not give us a reason other than it was from management, the punks at the door found it quite amusing. Finally they let me back in to gather my belongings but by then my coat had been stolen with my cell phone, money etc.Evidently my coat was not the only one that was stolen that night. After spending a sufficient amount of money for a below par experience I would never recommend this place to anyone.Sketchy
There is a plethora of better bars & pizza places in the area. Dont waste your money here. The employees are inattentive, rude, and slower than snails. Nobody there seems happy or skilled in customer service. They are severely lacking in hospitality, speed, it accuracy ⛔👎
The redo was amazing. Opened the place up n felt more spacious. Caprese chix pizza was excellent. Poutine fries as well. Not a lot of pulled pork on nachos though. Staff was working there tails off but did not feel neglected. Will definitely go back soon
Food was phenomenal beer selection is huge with customizable beer flights. Bought an appetizer platter, buffalo chicken dip, and ribeye dip sandwich. Amazing! Caroline was a great server. Dirty plates and napkins disappeared without even noticing, help with food and beer selection was on point. 10 outa 10 by far. Thanks for food coma. I will be back!PS. The guy down there with the 1 star has no idea what he is talking about. Should of been patient, because great things are worth waiting for.
We have been to the Thirsty Moose three times, but just for drinks. The service, one on one at the table has been 50/50. The servers seemed to start out kinda sad or down and by the time they leave or we leave, they seem to perk up. The center service counter is awful. They barely greet or acknowledge you unless absolutely necessary and its usually with an eye roll and a snotty tone, but dont take it personally, they seem to hate everyone equally. The bar tenders are always super friendly and helpful and they have an excellent selection of beers and ciders.
Very large beer selection with good options. Excellent grass-fed beef burgers. Very juicy. Also the fries and tots were right on, and the fact that you can sub tots instead of fries for free was surprising in all the right ways.
Got seated at a table, never got any service, left. Very loud.
So many TVs. Food was good, our waitress was fantastic. I wish I could remember her name. Fun place, especially of you are any sort of sports fan.
Tons of beers on tap. Good selection of bar food. Plenty of TVs to watch all the games - BIG screens. Live bands downstairs. Great place.
Grabbed food thru grubhub while travelingThe Fish sandwich was incredibly well done and despite being delivered it was pleasantly warm and not overly soggy. The fries were excellent. Prices were fair, great side salad.Appreciated the various menu optionsAlready planning to keep this on my Go To llst for the duration of our stay in Portsmouth
I love the food and the environment. I have had missed service there.
Great beer, great drinks, great food! We had a great evening on the terrace, with our dog, and several other guests who also brought their dogs. The Pumpkin spice Martini was definitely worth it! Also tryied the Moose Juice! We had the Oignon soup and it was one of the best we ever had. The chicken wings were also On the level!Everything was A+!We will definitely come back.
Stopping in after a day trip. Our server was Meghan who was both polite and attentive. Food was filling and delicious. Upbeat and lively brewery restaurant. Would definitely return!
Thirsty Moose in Portsmouth NH is something to behold! 100 beers on tap, at least three different bars, place was massive and still had great food and great service!
A great choice with a good selection of food and drinks. Everything arrived quickly, to order and the table service was outstanding. The Moose Juice was my choice, with very summery tones in the strawberry puree and lemonade. Definitely give it a try.The Rocky Burger and Italian Meats pizza werr superb, but go hungry because youll have plenty of food. Will definitely return.
A ton of pedestrian beers mixed in with a few gems. The spot is family-friendly, and offers your typical fried pub foods. The Buffalo chicken dip is very tasty - upgrade it by ordering it with pita chips. If you just want a beer this is an okay place, but despite the many pages of offerings few are actual standouts.
Pretty friendly staff overall. We had a party of 17 with no reservation, so I understand that we were quite lucky that it was Sunday evening and we got right in. The hostess or maybe manager made very little effort to seat is together so we ended up at the bar hanging around and just grabbing seats as they opened. We had tried for outside, but were told there was not enough room (not true, but whatever maybe I dont know the whole story even tho there was visually enough space from the time were arrived until the time we left). Overall the place was clean (other than the bathrooms, which is a turn off.... Keep in mind this is not just a bar). The beer selection was the highlight, lots of great beer and local selections!!! Another highlight was the food. I would say its on par or above what you might expect in this rustic bar like environment. Overall Id recommend stopping in and deciding for yourself.
The food was decent, not great but decent (we usually love Thier food). Burgers werr a little over cooked but otherwise good. However the service was horrendous tonight. It was busy, but not so busy the service should be that bad. The waitress was so rude, took quite some time before she even came to ask about drinks(and appeared to be completely annoyed and inconvenienced to have to ask us), by the time we ordered food we had already been there 45 minutes. She came out once to ask if we needed anything, one person said water and she walked away quickly and without a word so I couldnt even request a beverage. She came back left the water without a word. Later comes over and asks about boxes we say 2 please she comes back leaves them on the table not a word. 10 minutes later, asks if we want our check. She didnt ask if we wanted to split the check or if we wanted dessert or anything else. She brings the check and says a half hearted have a good night, as she is walking away. My baby started to fuss a bit and she turned quickly giving her a dirty/annoyed look. Mind you my baby was so well behaved the 2.5 hours we were there. And the whole visit should not have taken that long. We had friends from out of town who had never gone to a Thirsty Moose and we wanted to take them as we have always had good food and service in Dover and the one time we went to the Portsmouth one a couple years ago. Very upset with this experience and will not be returning to this location for a bit, especially as it is a bit out of our way. I hope that waitress gets more practice and patience and that she was just having a rough night. Otherwise, she may want to seek a different type of job as her interpersonal skills, or customer service skills are quite lacking.
I ordered the hangover burger to go. The menu online says the burger is $13.99 at the Portsmouth location. When I went to order the man said that was the old menu now the same burger is $19.99. The burger was no better than it always had been. The burger was not worth $20 in my opinion I won’t be ordering food again maybe just drinks
The food was good, as always. Usually the service is pretty good or very good here, tonight not so much. We were seated at literally the only table for two, a high top, right in the middle of the floor. Its actually kind of odd and really in the way of everyone. You would think it would be hard to miss us, yet we wait 10 minutes to even see our waitress and it only got worse from there. We would see literally ever other waiter and waitress walk by us several times, but our waitress was no where to be found. This werent on the entire time we were there. The would have sold two more adult drinks if she had just stopped by once. This young lady could use some coaching as to what it means to be a waitress as she seemed way more preoccupied with something in the kitchen all night instead of her tables.
The bartenders feel that they are entitled to a certain percentage of a tip. Or they refused to serve you until you until you pay that percentage of a tip.
Nice pub with good food. Id recommend the tenders and steak tips. Large portions, trivia quiz on a Wednesday night
The Thirsty Moose is a trendy spot for nightlife, great beer, and good food. Any beer lover would find more than enough of a selection to keep them occupied. And the food is delicious. Its standard pub fare, but its done well, and the wings are some of the best in town. The only downside is going on a Friday or Saturday night. It gets packed, can be difficult to order, and can be noisy. Still, for a night out on the town, you should at least stop in, if for nothing else than to see the spectacle and grab a beer, before heading somewhere where you can actually talk to other people. For a 20 something, this should be a destination, a place you check out to see interesting people, in a friendly and fun party environment.During the week, you can usually find a table for yourself and friends, and its more low key. They offer trivia, karaoke, and a happy hour.
One of my favorite places to be. I dont think Ive ever had a bad experience here. Servers are always very attentive and super friendly. Good food that hits it out of the park every time. Beer selection is always varied enough to never get old and encourages trying new flavors. Even the kitchen staff are a super cool bunch of people. We went on my sons fifth birthday and they made him a special dessert! Above and beyond, I wish I could give more stars.
Perfectly good restaurant in person. Only giving this review because I put in a Grubhub order that Thirsty Moose accepted but never fulfilled.
We always stop on for lunch and trying one of their 70? Or so draft beers, cider etc. We shared the nachos this time and they were great.
Lets start off by setting the expectations right, this is a sports bar. They have a great selections of burgers, pizza, fried apps, and other good I love to eat once in a while. Certain nights have select breweries come in and you can try their beer for free and get pints at reduced price. They always have a good selection of beer and have never had a hard time getting a table with friends. All that being said, Ive never been that impressed with the food. The staff is generally very friendly and happy to serve. The restaurant though can sometimes be very busy, dont expect a quick bite.
Very popular, busy spot downtown. Saturday night we arrived with no wait, although the upstairs seating was full, so we sat downstairs. Personally feel like we didn’t get the full experience of Thirsty Moose being downstairs. Downstairs is cold and dingy. Our waitress was great and very friendly, she answered our questions and gave good recommendations for other bars to visit. Overall food is good and a large beer selection. Definitely will continue to visit, I know I do enjoy the food and hopefully we can sit upstairs one day and really enjoy the Thirsty Moose atmosphere.
Visiting from NY. Stopped for a quick bite... my husband had the Tuesday special a beer and a burger for $10 and I had the margarita pizza. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, the beer our server Nick recommended and the service. Price was also very reasonable!
Great pub food and larg beer selection
Food was awesome. Ordered a beer and a mixed drink. Best mixed drink Ive had in a long while Fighting Friday was playing downstairs and that was fantastic! I could follow that band anywhere, especially to the moose.
They have a very good range of beers and a good range of food at reasonable prices. This location is kind of long and narrow and very much set up as a sports bar. If you want to be able to read the menus then its best to ask for a table with some light. Id say this is more setup for drinking groups than for 2-4 people looking for something to eat in an environment where its easy to talk.
Fantastic beer selection with great food options. The sliders and burgers are hard to pass up. They have a lot of outdoor seating as well. Often a 20 minute+ wait to sit if you walk down during peak times.
We always look forward to our time in Portsmouth and at the Thirsty Moose. We sat down to the same friendly environment, great beer selection and food. Then the music switched from classic rock to some sort techno house music. The place started clearing out with many people complaining about the music. The explanation was that the new bar manager preferred that music, which did not seem to fit the cool New England pub feel the Thirsty Moose has always provided. It’s Portsmouth, its the Moose, the bar manager needs to read the room when people start leaving specifically because of the music. Disappointed...
Food was excellent. Service was fast. Atmosphere was nice. **side note if you are not familiar with downtown Portsmouth, where this tap house is located, be careful. The streets are a god damned nightmare. They bleed into each other, without lights. There is a crosswalk, every 6 feet and locals do not care if there is a car coming, they will just go, as on most crosswalks, there are not light indicators telling them when to go.
My wife and I had a date night in Portsmouth, decided to stop in for dinner. Server was solid and very kind. Dinner recommendations he made were spot on and appreciated. Food was brought out in perfect time and quite delicious. Will eat here again.
Great food and drinks. The memorabilia is over priced. I have been here many times with varied service. A few months ago, very slow table service. Last time we (me and the group I travel with for work) were there, we waited 14 minutes and couldnt get someone to seat us... or acknowledge we were even there. Like I said, good food, but I wont go back.
Great beer selection, obviously, though occasionally overwhelming. The bartenders are a great help. Downstairs dance bar music is odd but a good crowd. Service is great. American sports bar food. Reminds me of a better buf wild wings
Incredible staff, tasty apps, great beer selection! Came here on a whim looking for some beers and snacks. The fried pickles app is huge and delicious, and the waiter had great beer tips. Would come back if I was in the area again!
Excellent service. Yummy chicken tenders. Update : we went back today and the service continues to be great, Cooper is an amazing server. The hummus plate was awesome.
Great sports bar with plethora of local brews
We were from out of town. This place looked tiny from the outside but went inside to find this huge pub. It was trivia night so it was pretty loud but was a great environment. Service was great! Food was excellent! And prices were very reasonable! Will definitely return here if ever in Portsmouth again. Only trouble was trying to find a place for two vehicles to park. It seemed especially busy for a Tuesday night.
Just want in for drinks...so happy to belly up to the bar. Service was timely prices are fair. Lovely TVs to watch any sport on!! Thanks for the buzz
Chili... no thank you. May have been salvageable if it wasnt filled with something that smelled like dirty dish water.Wings... yes please!Vibe...10-4! Love it, very chill!Beverages... very good. Minus the fruit flies in every one. Water was crisp though!Staff... needs help. Was great until it was brought to their attention, discreetly, after a few cups with deceased fruit flies. After that we were ignored. 6 times server walked by while it was quite obvious he was being flagged down... barely 2 feet away...
The service was terrible! Always 3-4 servers at the host station that have no idea what they are doing. Line , line, line…but no one seems to be able to seat anyone even though there were plenty of open tables. Poor, poor excuse for a restaurant!
Came here after a severe disappointment up the road. So happy we stumbled on this location because it turned our night around. Service was excellent and a 5/5, beer selection was vast and high quality. The food overall was good but the meat used in the French dip sandwich could use some help. Would most definitely return in the future and recommend to others.
All the stars to this place!Waitress was great and helped me decide on a beer by giving me several samples. Decided on downeast cider house, such a good cider beer!Buffalo chicken dip AMAZING!Cuban sandwich INCREDIBLE!!!You can’t go wrong here.
This place has the largest tap bar I have seen. They have all the local beers you can think of. The food is all a reasonable price. And service is fast. The place is pretty big inside and features many tvs on the walls. They have different promotional nights during the week like ladies night and taco night.
Phenomenal tap selection and great appetizers. Our waitress was very attentive without hovering. They have an extensive tap menu that is great for beer novices making your beer selection a little less intimidating. I HIGHLY recommend this place.
Huge sports bar with an even bigger beer list. Efficient service. Food is quite good for a grill but not spectacular. The chili was the best of the 4 different items we ordered. Very loud and bustling.
Britanny was an amazing waitress and was so nice. checked up on all of us constantly. i was with some of my friends and we are all servers and made sure she was taken care of for her great job. the food was also great and good timing!!
The atmosphere was very good. The food and service were excellent. This would be the place to go to watch a game at the bar.
I went to the Thirsty Moose with one of my best friends, and had a great time. They had an amazing selection of beer. It was truly difficult to pick which amazing brews I wanted to try in my flight. The staff were all very kind and welcoming. It wasnt too loud or too quite inside and could comfortably talk to my friend, without having to yell over booming music, or having the feeling that if I didnt whisper Id disturb the people near us.
