I got the BEST service (partial highlight) from Megan U in cos. I didn’t even have to show her a reference picture and she worked magic on my hair. She got me to a level 10 with none/minimal damage and beautifully toned my hair to suit my skin tone. I hope to keep up with her throughout my hair journey after she graduates. Can’t wait to see her shine at her next job 💜

I have had a few haircuts from students here over the last 2-3years and I’m always happy! They have instructors there to help and approve so I always feel confident. Highly recommend! Hair cuts are only $18 and I have thick curly hair so getting a full head of color was only like $65-$70 and it always looks great.

I got my hair done by Lindsay M. She did wonderful! The color, haircut, and blowout was the best! I never felt so beautiful walking out. The amount of compliments I recieved was generous too. My favorite part of the service was the wash bowl, the way she messages my scalp can put me to sleep without an issue. She goes right at it to make sure youre fully clean and pays attention to the smallest details. Ill definitely be coming back to her just for the wash!

Very HORRIBLE customer service. Destine was extremely rude and Natalie was a bit sarcastic but tried to help with the misunderstanding, so that was nice of her. There wasn’t a warm welcome when we walked in. My experience was not great at all and I’m a bit reluctant on sharing anything further because it won’t be nice. Aveda products are wonderful and the first time I came in for a few months back and everything was great. Hopefully this was a one off. I’m going to try the other Aveda because I love their products but hopefully the service will be better. If not it will be my last time (I’m only returning because Natalie tried her best to make the experience better).

I had such a great experience getting my first ever lash lift/tint from Stephanie H.! She was so gentle and the results are beautiful. I’ll definitely be coming back to see her and to try other services. Treat yourself and go see her!

I had a facial with Lee along with a brow wax, and brow and lash tint. Lee was very knowledgeable and attentive. Not only was it the best facial I ever had but she paid attention to a lot of details to make the experience relaxing for me. She made great product recommendations. My skin looked amazing and my brows were so perfect. She is amazing and has a very calming and professional energy.

I loved my experience here! Myself, my younger sister, and her friend all went to get the 90 minute facials done and we were very pleased! All of the estitician students did amazing jobs and we felt very relaxed. I had student, Lee Munger, who is so good at what she does! She took time to carefully assess my skin, listen to what I was having issues with, and then made a very clear plan for the facial as well as upkeep at home. She was very warm, kind, and welcoming! I will be going back!

I had a plant peel facial, which was recommended after my skin assessment plus an eyebrow wax. What a great experience. Lee performed my facial and she was awesome. She was delicate and purposeful in her movements and also very informative. The atmosphere was relaxing and everyone I encountered was polite. Clean facility and very professional. Thanks Lee! Will be booking another appointment.

This is my second time here. I loved my first experience, so I came back . The salon is clean and well cared for.This time, I got Emma Delude. I love ❤️ my cut . Plus, the styling she took the time. She made it look like the style I asked for. She has a bright future in hair styling. She was friendly, eager to please, and really knows her stuff. I will be back to see her before she graduates. Rio Infante is an exceptional hairstylist and gave me an incredible look. I went in for a shampoo and hair styling today and she exceeded my expectations. She was very patient and I did not feel rushed at all during the experience. I’ve also had my hair cut by her and will definitely continue to go back to her for all of my hair needs! 5 STARS!!

I love my hair cut by Janell today! Not only did she listen to my wishes for my hair, but she styled it so nicely just with the blow drier and brush after. A stranger complemented me after saying, You look beautiful! I wish I had plans for a date night! Janell discussed with me different options to help with long term hair health. We also had good conversation about a variety of topics from reading to family and pets. I wish Janell the best after her graduation in 5 weeks and hope that she can get her own salon up and running in good time!I have been to Aveda Institute several times and keep coming back. Cant beat the price, but I also have not (yet) ended up with a haircut I dont like. The instructors check the work of the students before washing to make sure there is a solid plan and also check before blow drying to make sure everything is done well and the client is happy. Plan for more time because they are students and focus on quality over speed. I always see it as chance to sit and relax for a bit. Front desk staff was also friendly and helpful in answering my questions today.

The institute is really nice and the students and staff try to be very helpful. However, this is the last time I go. The instructor didn’t come around until the end and didn’t have anything to say about how I was leaving with my hair a mess. I got an all-over color and have to go home and try to wash all of the color from around my forehead and hands. I understand they are students, but paying attention to details should be a given. Then I was told they wouldn’t have time to blow-dry my hair. I told her I would do it myself because I had to go home and rinse out the remaining color on my hair. After calling and expressing my concern, the front desk offered me 25% off of my next color service ( as if I would go back). I should have just bought a box of hair color unfortunately.

I had my hair cut by Lucy tonight and she was an excellent stylist! My hair turned out exactly as I wanted it between the cut and the blow out. I always have a great experience getting my hair services here.My only concern was with the schools broken sink. The water randomly turned very hot during my shampoo and began to flood. Hopefully the school uses some of the money it makes to repair its facilities!

I’ve been coming here for many years and I’m always satisfied. Today I came in for a haircut with Kaeyla and she gave me probably the best haircut I’ve ever had. I’m 8 months pregnant and was feeling frumpy and she provided exactly what I was looking for. The wash and styling were also fab. Just what I needed today. Thank you!

I had a color and long layers done on my hair by Joey and was very nervous because I have naturally curly hair. I was beyond pleased with everything. Joey (love her) was extremely professional and made me feel very comfortable. I’m going to have to find out what salon she will be working at because I will definitely not go to anyone else. Joey is the way to go‼️‼️‼️

Today I had a facial appointment with Sara H. and I must say, it was absolutely amazing. She made me feel so relaxed and her product knowledge was spot on. I highly recommend you book her for your facials! My skin hasn’t felt this good in ages. Her massage techniques have helped ease my shoulder and neck pain (I’m a hairstylist) I will definitely be returning in the next few weeks!

I went in for a 90 minute facial with Ariella B, and oh.my.word it was incredible. Her should and back massage technique was incredible. My skin felt amazing after she was done, and it looked so healthy. I loved the product and regimen she chose for me. I would 1000x over see her again. My only regret is that I didn’t connect with her sooner as she is graduating next month. BOOK HER before she’s gone- you won’t be disappointed!

Joey R is a true hair artist! From the moment I walked in, her warm demeanor made me feel instantly comfortable. Ive been going to Douglas J for about 5 years for my haircuts. I feel its important to give students real life experience and support their careers in the making.My visit on March 28, 2024 was exceptional! , Sienna, my stylist, greeted me warmly. I showed my stylist photo of the style I was wanting. She took time to really look at the photo, asked appropriate questions about length, cut etc. Her professionalism, courtesy and confidence was outstanding!When Sienna has a question or felt she needed support she didnt hesitate to watch and learn from the instructor. She intently listened to the techniques and theory the instructor demonstrated.I wish the best for Sienna in her career!. She has what it takes to go far!

Great experiences every time I go here to get my haircut! Great prices, the students are friendly, and the haircuts are always double checked by the instructors before you leave in case there is anything that needs to be adjusted. If youre into tipping, there is no place for you to leave a tip. I was told the students may be able to accept gift cards if you so wish, but that would be up to you.

My first ever spa experience was amazing and the lovely Brooke made me feel so comfortable and seen! everyone at this salon is so welcoming and kind. i keep coming back! prices are super reasonable too. 100/10, i would (and do) recommend this place to my friends!

I recently had an hour facial done at Douglas J Royal Oak and I must say I enjoyed every minute! Haven, was very sweet, knowledgeable, and professional! None of what she did came as a surprise to me because with each process she gently spoke what was happening next( cool touch, warm touch, etc) which was really nice. She has a very gentle touch, not pulling roughly on your skin.The entire facial and interaction with Haven from start to finish was enjoyable. After the facial she gave pointers on ways to keep my skin in tip top shape. I’ve had facials at other places but this one by far was the BEST yet!Thank you Haven!

The young lady who did my hair cut and botanical treatment was SO sweet! She really listened to and tended to my specific hair needs, clearly demonstrating good skill and efficiency. Been coming here because of that for a very long time!

I had my very first facial and it was AMAZING! The service was done by student Steph H and she did a really great job. The environment was very calm and relaxing. Steph was very professional and made sure that I was comfortable throughout the entire treatment. She told me about the products she was using and explained all of the benefits for my skin. I will definitely be returning, and I plan to recommend Steph H to my family and friends who are wanting to receive really great skincare treatments/services! :)

I had a facial appointment with Jacqueline that was absolutely marvelous from start to finish. Jacqueline greeted me on arrival, and explained my facial experience along the way. She examined my face before starting the process, so that she would know the proper products that would be best to apply to my skin. Her knowledge and thoroughness made my facial outcome grand. I typically have dry skin, but by the end of my facial, Jacqueline had me glowing ✨️ 😍. I received multiple compliments throughout the day, and I feel like a new woman. Thank you Jacqueline again for this awesome facial expression. Cant wait until I see you at the next scheduled appointment. Until then, stay blessed.

Before I start this review, I understand that this is a school full of students who are learning and I do not blame the students for the outcome of my hair. I went in for a balayage and over all I loved the color. My initial visit is in the first two photos, but there are clearly some harsh lines to be fixed. Upon returning to get it fixed, I ended up coming home with what is pictured in the rest of the photos. Had I not already spent 7 hours on getting my hair done, I would have asked them to fix it. But it was past 10:00 pm at that point and everyone around me was rushing to get out of the door. I know that the student parted my hair so I wouldn’t notice these details, but I am curious as to why, in both of my experiences, the educators would not own up to these mistakes and use them as teaching moments. Shouldn’t these students be taught professionalism and how to get better at their practice? I’ve been to many schools to get my hair done and have had great experiences, but I’m pretty disappointed this time.

I am not one to say anything negative, and I have been to the J aveda institute multiple times, specifically the one in Lansing. I decided to get my hair done at a school again, because I’ve had nothing but positive experiences, until this time. First, I would like to say my stylist was very friendly, and I feel like part of the issue was communication. I showed them a picture of what I wanted, and their teacher came over and looked at it as well. I had mentioned I wanted exactly what was in the photo, and the stylist got to work. At first everything was okay, until they rinsed the bleach out of my hair, and said they thought I didn’t need toning. Which for most of my hair I would have agreed, except for where I had grow out, which was bright white in comparison to the rest of my hair that was a light golden color. I said something, and at this point the appointment was almost over. After they toned my roots, they dried my hair and styled me. Which, in my reference photo, I was hoping to get my whole head like the picture, not just the ends. But they had to leave as the night class was coming in, and they were really proud of what they did. As soon as I left I went to Sally’s and finished what I wanted to get done. When I got home, I realized they had gotten bleach all over my new jacket too, which they did offer to take off my coat before they started, but I was cold, and I’ve never had an issue before now. I would like to state this wasn’t the stylist fault completely, their teacher only stopped by twice, which in my previous experience they would stop by multiple times. I feel like the mentor should have been there, especially after I found out I was one of their first clients…. Between my jacket, and me having to finish the job, I feel like I wasted my money and my time.

I got my hair cut by Megan H. She was super nice and approachable. She made sure everything from the hair length to styling was just right. She did a great scalp massage and exemplifies outstanding customer service!

Annabelle gave me a hair cut with layers and a face frame. An instructor listened to plan before she began and checked the entire haircut afterward. Annabelle did a great job and I would recommend Aveda for all of your needs. It’s quite a bargain for $18 (woman’s haircut 6/2024)!

I wont say the stylists name, but from the start she wasn’t very personable- she didn’t say more than 4 words to me other than saying hi and introducing herself. she was not gentle when she was brushing my hair at all which caused many knots that she ended up just ripping out. when she washed my hair it seems like she left product in it which made my hair greasy. she cut my hair way shorter than i asked and then didn’t even fully blow dry it so i left with partly wet hair.

I had the best facial experience of my life. Breezy was not only knowledgeable and friendly but her energy was everything! She advised on the best products to use on my sensitive skin that did not disappoint. I left Aveda feeling great and my skin glowing booked for next week as well. Breezy is a keeper!!!

I had Chloe for a 60 minute facial! She was amazing. My face was so dry and I left with my face feeling hydrated and glowy. As she was massaging my shoulders I could feel all the tension release. It was the best facial. 10/10

I came in to Aveda’s School in Royal Oak to get some “natural” highlights to blend in with my gray. Gracie did a phenomenal job blending and brightening my hair. She is off to a wonderful start coloring hair. I learned a lot from her about curly hair as well. Thank you Gracie❣️

Zena was AMAZING. Best haircut I’ve had in years, she was professional, fun and easy to talk to. Her confidence and composure gave me confidence- I felt like I was in good hands right from the start. She communicated efficiently and effectively. I arrived late (something that I think is very rude and disruptive) and she was calm and gave me a beautiful haircut anyway in a shorter period of time - very impressive. Now I only want her to cut my hair !

Douglas J is one of my favorite places to go for facials and hair services.This past Saturday, I took a friend for a facial and stress treatment and it was absolutely incredible!! Ingrid performed my service and she was polite, considerate, friendly, adoring, and extremely professional & knowledgeable about skin. I received a balayage, root touch up, and hair cut by Monica Ferguson. I have attached a “before” picture, as well as two “after” pictures to show the difference. I am so pleased with her work! I haven’t done anything fun to my hair in years-just all over color, so it was exciting to get something different and more hip. Monica was extremely kind, and took great care to give me a great experience. I definitely plan on returning to her in the future.

I went to Jackie M. For a facial today & in one word it was AMAZING!! She has such a calming vibe, gentle hands and knows the products needed to make my skin feel like silk. She was so professional and knowledgeable. She advised on the products needed and I bought some good products. All day I’ve been complemented on my beautiful skin and it is thanks to her. The icing on the cake is the décolletage and décolleté massage. I scheduled my next appointment with her, already. She’s got a gift!!

Today I had my first ever facial with Jacqueline, and it was an amazing experience! She was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain each step of the facial to me. As a first-timer, this made me feel at ease and comfortable throughout the entire process. The results were fantastic, and my skin felt hydrated, refreshed and rejuvenated. She recommended a everyday at home routine for me, and helped me purchase my first cleanser. I highly recommend Jacqueline for anyone looking for a professional and educational facial experience.

I have never been happier with my hair! Ava Smigielski not only did an amazing job, she gave me a wonderful experience. I dont always enjoy going to have my hair done at salons, but I would go again :) I highly recommend scheduling with her, she is very talented!

I have had multiple facial’s done here at the royal oak institute but last week’s facial that was done by Colette was by far the absolute BEST facial I’ve ever received! Colette made sure I was comfortable and at ease throughout my entire experience. I would book with her for the rest of my life if I could lol

I had the most amazing facial with Haven C.! She tailored my experience to my skin needs and sensitivity perfectly, and I left feeling renewed and so taken care of. She explained what products she was using and how it would help my skin. This was my first ever facial and she made it so enjoyable. The process was very relaxing and I am already excited for the next one!

My friends went to get their hair and makeup done for her wedding. I opted out, but sat with them the day of the trial... It was awful. My friend decided to do her own makeup, and had to find somebody else to do her hair. They didnt even use heat protectant on her and you could smell the burning hair.The makeup was atrocious as well - they did super heavy contouring (which was VERY obvious), and used a foundation that was easily 2 shades too dark and very orangey. It was a very The Only Way is Essex look which is fine and all of thats what you want, but was not at all what she described. Shes naturally very beautiful and needs minimal makeup.The rest of the bridal party didnt fare too well either.

This was such an enjoyable experience! The gentleman who greeted me at the front desk was so polite and just made me feel so welcomed and even offered me a hot beverage while I waited. ☺️Hannah who waxed my face made me feel at ease from the first moment we met. Her skill and technique were on point and she even tinted my eyebrows as an extra perk for me!! Im so sad she is graduating next month, as I would have loved to book her in the future. She made me feel beautiful by the time I left!!💜💜💜

Marcela was absolutely amazing and had my skin glowing after my facial. I was very relaxed throughout the facial and my skin feels great. She gave great tips on skincare and recommended products that I cannot wait to add in!!

My stylist Zahraa was absolutely amazing! She was attentive, knowledgeable, very kind, and did a beautiful, amazing job. I will be returning just for her. I definitely recommend her! I had the best time getting spruced up by Delaney!! First time going to a school to get services done, naturally I was little nervy. But it came out SO GOOD. I got exactly what I asked for. Just a dark all over color and chop the dead ends. Very pumped and happy about my service. Also shout out for Delaney for not dying my skin or forehead! Got my hair done by Emmanuel & was so pleased. Not only did he explain everything he was doing while doing it, but he was the first stylist in a long time to get me as blonde as i wanted to be. Super personable & just makes you feel so comfortable. 10/10 recommend !!!

My experience with Jacqueline and Aveda was amazing, starting from when I first walked into the lobby and the friendly staff greeted me and let my esthetician Jaqueline know I was there. Very quickly after that Jacqueline took me through the very serene and state of the art building where I was offered hot tea and water. After having a few sips of tasty hot tea I was taken to my room where I was given the best facial of my life! Jacqueline was very knowledgeable and gentle during the entire process explaining to me how the different Aveda products work and how to use them myself at home. I will definitely be back to see Jacqueline and I recommend you book with her too! 10/10

It was an amazing experience! I’ve never gotten a facial before but after having Kassidy Nowik do my first one for me I love them! My skin was glowing and I got a ton of complements after. 10/10 would recommend!

First I would like to start by saying my hairstylist was very nice and sweet, therefore I don’t want to say her name. BUT I went in for a blow out and walked out looking like a poodle. Not sure how I was even allowed to pay for this but I was still charged. I was already late as it was for a party so getting it redone was not an option. Multiple people told me I looked like George Washington, Shirley Temple, Albert Einstein etc. I would not recommend booking a service here.

Leana did an amazing job working with my haircut and blonding. She got maximum lift while keeping my hair healthy and strong and seemed excited for the cut and style which always makes me feel good. I left her chair feeling happier about my hair than I ever have and haven’t second guessed the look once. Will 100% be going back to Leana in the future

I went to the Aveda Institute for a facial. Shelby J. was very friendly and professional. She listened to my concerns and offered a specific facial for my skin type. She was very careful to tell me what she was doing and asked often how I was doing. Her facial was very relaxing and enjoyable. My skin looked clean and fresh afterwards. Won’t be back. Asked for highlights. Had to go back bc they missed a spot. No biggie, I go back and their student made my hair ORANGE. while TWO instructors said it was good. Need much better instructors who actually know what they are doing. Unbelievable.

I am absolutely OBSESSED!! This is my second time seeing Mallory B and she never disappoints. Today I asked for a trim and a partial highlight so my hair would look fresh and bright for summer, but I didnt want to be too blonde. She cut my hair to the perfect length and the color is phenomenal! Mallory has only been a student for 9 months but she was able to color, cut, and blow dry my hair in 2 hours, and she gave me exactly what I wanted! I highly recommend Mallory to all of my friends :)

Wonderful! The student expertly took my hair to the desired length. Then when I said they could do a pattern and have fun if they wanted, they warned me they had never done it before but I said I didn’t care since no one would see. Then they come out here and try the hardest thing a freaking flower and absolutely make a lovely design 💛 lovely person Sarah W out here making a lovely design and being so kind and nice too!

Lisa S. was GREAT!!!! She did a great job, was very professional, and very fast without cutting any corners. Plus, I have a hair cut that is exactly what I wanted. It looks great and she styled it nicely. The teacher did a few check ins and that didnt take any longer than a normal hair cut. There was a special and so my hair cut was only 10$. Mind blown. I usually pay well over 50$ for less quality. Thank you! I will be back!

Went in for a hair cut and hair color yesterday. There was a student(don’t want to mention her name) who did my service. She was super slow and the process went on for so long. She constantly looked annoyed and went to her supervisor for everything, she would apply dye for 2-4 strands and then walk to her supervisor for some doubts, it was okay by me. The blow drying part came, she kept pulling my hair so bad that at one point I felt my scalp was gonna come off. By the end of the session I almost felt like running away from that table, my apparently blow dried hair was still wet, and had no hold, my hair looked lifeless. that student had dyed my forehead along with my hair, and didn’t bother to remove the stain. My grey hairs are still showing(idk what was the point in the service?!) And the over all service was so bad. I understand that you have students do the service, but I as a customer did not drive 45 mins and paid $45+18 to be treated like this. I felt so neglected throughout the service. It started at 5:30 and by 7:15 the stylist wasn’t even done with the hair color. I said it’s been 2 hrs almost, can we speed up, she says, this is how long it takes, And if you want me to rush, you will get the haircut but not the blowdry, but you will pay the full amount. I felt soo stupid for choosing to come all the way to get my haircut done here. If the student/ their supervisor is tired, they should ask someone else to attend the customer, not just ruin the customer’s face/ hair, because they are uninterested. The haircut didn’t look the way I wanted it to, as well. I asked for wispy bangs but I came back the same way I was before the haircut. Wouldn’t recommend this location for haircuts/hair color. Apart from all the ‘uninterested looking’ service, now I also have to deal with the dye on my face. I tried rubbing it using everything I can, it’s been a day now and just wouldn’t wash off from my face and behind my neck& ears. I have a big day coming up and regret going here for my service. If I had know it is not a salon, but a place where you let a student practice on my hair, I would have gone elsewhere. Now both my hair and face are ruined.Update-Day-3: my scalp hurts and feels like burning and hurts a lot in the areas she damaged my scalp during the blowdry on extremely high heat. Poor poor choice to come here!!! Extremely poor job done!

I got a Brazilian and an acne facial from Jo today and I am BLOWN away!!! I’ve been getting Brazilians for two plus years now and Jo did better than most professionals! My facial was so relaxing and was exactly what my skin has been needing. Couldn’t recommend Aveda or Jo more, best spa experience ever!

I had an amazing haircut and color treatment with Julia F. She took her time and her suggestions for layers, bangs, and a toner made my hair look amazing. Ive been going to Aveda for months now and Im always impressed with my experience.

I had the pleasure of letting Mercedes do my hair today and she made my hair look so amazing. She was super friendly and made sure that I had an amazing experience. I highly recommend her and will be going back to her.

Let me start by saying Jessica Davis gave me one of the best haircuts, I have literally ever had! My hair is usually touching my butt by the time I get my next cut, and I have major anxiety every time I get it cut. I saw a Groupon for the Douglas J Aveda School and was skeptical until I read some reviews. I decided to go for it, figured for the price if I didnt like it I could always go somewhere else after to have it fixed. Let me tell you they met all my expectations and some! My appointment started right on time. I got a choice between a moisturizing or repair botanical with my wash. Than we discussed what I wanted, and the instructor double checked prior to the cut that she understood exactly what I wanted. Than after the cut, he came over again with a comb and scissors to double check her work (which he never needed the scissors, my girl was flawless). After that she blew dried my hair with a slight style (I didnt pay extra for an actually blow out). The instructor came one last time to make sure I was satisfied with Jessicas work. I left feeling amazing, fresh and light. I asked for 5 inches cut with long layers, a face frame starting from my chin and to make sure I could put all my hair in a ponytail. She checked every box, and the next day I received high praises all day on my hair at work. Thanks Jessica if your still at here for my next cut, I will definitely be requesting you! If not the best of luck on your journey, you will be great!

I had an appointment with Janice tonight (13 Feb ‘24). She’s SO talented! I came there in need of major TLC for my hair, she worked a miracle with a simple wash and blow out; wow. Leann P. did an amazing job with my hair! I am not one that typically dyes my hair a lot but Leann helped give me the confidence to do it. I absolutely love it and she made me feel so welcomed. 10/10 would recommend booking with Leann.

This was the first time I had such an early appointment (9:30 am) and the lobby was filled with people waiting to be checked in, which was done quickly and efficiently. It was also my first time with Ella who was lovely, listened to my wishes, made some suggestions and gave me the cut I wanted.

To be clear, Im rating Bella specifically at Douglas J. Aveda Royal Oak. I definitely will return to visit her next time. She was by far one of the best colorists thats worked on my hair. Her knowledge of current styles /color techniques was evident in my initial consultation. She very obviously knew the products she worked with. But a huge important factor that so many pricey salons overlook or change was her genuine want to help me get what I wanted. Too many times Ive been talked out of my desired cut/color because a stylist thinks they know what I want. And this was not the case with Bella! She took the time to really listen, she was engaged and she never once made me feel rushed. For someone in beauty school, I can honestly say that I was thoroughly impressed if not almost surprised by how great she was and at such a great price point. In her chair, its clear that her professionalism and friendliness was better than that of an official licensed hairdresser any day. I will return and I consider myself lucky to have met Bella!!

Yesterday, I came out of the salon with my hair looking worse than I went in. The issue is that an instructor did as worse as the student. I have been here two dozen times. This is almost the worst. When they say I have to get an instructor, you are in trouble. I have fizzies and heading on vacation abroad and needed my straighten. I walked out of the salon and my curls were gone in 2 minutes. No bosy, not straight. Ugh!!

This evening I was given the opportunity to see Zoie for a 60 min facial. I was very pleased with the whole experience. Zoie listened to my concerns, did a thorough skin analysis, and helped me choose the correct products that best suited my skin type. Zoie is AMAZING at her craft and I already can’t wait for my next facial! 😁

Imani did my hair and makeup on 2/3/24 and it turned out absolutely stunning. She is professional and so talented - most certainly an excellent career ahead for her! Been coming here for a year, seeing different students each time for cuts and coloring. Ive always liked the results but none of them have used stying products on my hair correctly. Usually way too much and products intended for more damp hair being applied when almost dry. I always go home and rinse it out.

I came in for a balayage, not really picky about what color I wanted. Keira C and Madigan L did a lovely job with coloring my hair into such a pretty shade. I got a balayage done at a salon a couple years ago, and I honestly think they did a better job than my previous one. They were also both very sweet and nice during the whole appointment.

I am beyond pleased with the care and treatment I received when I booked a facial with Kelly L.She was inquisitive and informative throughout the process. I found her to be knowledgeable and comfortable executing the Aveda rituals. Thank you for a great experience.

Ive come here several times & my issue is always the scheduling/customer service never the actual stylists. Ive had appointments canceled or moved with sometimes less than a hours notice for myself/minor daughter. Today was the last straw. For the 3rd time both appointments couldnt be accommodated with the solution being to have 1 at 11am & the other 12:30 effectively making us be there 4-5 hours. When I couldnt do it & asked to cancel someone called back 20 minutes before the original appointment time to ask if I needed to cancel both appointments as if they didnt need to be canceled at all. When i explained how the situation looked the person hung up. I just cant do this anymore

Blake did an excellent job cutting my hair just how I wanted it! They were very good about checking in with me along the way to make sure I was getting the cut I wanted.

I left with wet hair and hair dye still on my hairline. After spending $32. I had to rewash my hair, condition and style it. $32 is not much money but I shouldn’t have paid anything for essentially doing my own hair.

I got a facial done here a few weeks ago.Faith was absolutely amazing! She was very gentle with the extractions. She explained all of the products and what they did throughout the entire facial. At the end, she recommended a few products to include in my daily routine at home. Overall, it was an amazing experience and she did fantastic! I would highly recommend Faith for any service!

Had a great experience with both Blake and Imani today! My son loves his haircut that Blake took the time to shape up just the way he wanted, and Im loving the long layered cut Imani gave me. Imani listened to everything that I wanted, and made sure she didnt take too much off. We will definitely be back.

I took both my daughters to get their haircut and the students Greg and Aurora did a fantastic job however I’m super disappointed with the instructor. My daughter has been begging to get her bangs cut like her American girl doll since she got her. I made her wait until today because we’re going to the American girl doll store this weekend and I didn’t want her bangs to grow out too fast. Greg, the student, had an obligation so the instructor took over. I told her twice what my daughter wanted, showed pictures and even had the doll with us. She cut what looked like a long layer and when I asked why it wasn’t shorter she said when I style it at home it will look smaller like the doll. I went home and there is no way to make this look like bangs at all. Very annoyed that she, especially as an instructor, decided what she wanted was better than what we asked for. I have a disappointed little girl and no time to fix it before we leave. The students were wonderful but maybe they should rethink who they have teaching.

I went here for their blonding services, haircut, and botanical treatment and left extremely happy! Before and after pictures provided for color. I had Brittany as my stylist and she got these results in ONE appointment. I had all my services done within 3 hours, that’s the fastest I’ve ever had these done anywhere!! The salon itself is professional and I’ve been going to this location for over a year now and will continue to go here, and choose Brittany as my stylist for as long as she is there! I’ve had blonding done before elsewhere, but these results are the best I’ve ever had. I always leave here feeling beautiful and happy I chose them! Carrie is one of the teachers, and she is is absolutely amazing, attentive, instructive, and supportive when working with the students. Even when the students graduate and new ones come, I know she will train them well!

LOVE MY HAIR! My hair was done by ava smigelski and she was amazing. i told her do anything you want as long as it’s blond. she talked me through the whole process and my hair lifted beautifully. she took her time and made sure everything was right and everyone was so nice and welcoming. she was very easy to talk to. i was so relaxed i almost fell asleep!! she was super gentle never once had a complaint about her! if you go here, get your hair done by ava!before and afters in the photos! you can def tell which ones are the afters!!

Had a wonderful experience with esthetician Jacqueline McCants. Had the Stress Relieving Treatment and left there feeling so refreshed. Jacqueline spoke in such a calming manner and used the perfect amount of pressure. I literally fell asleep from being so relaxed. I am so impressed with Douglas J, I highly recommend to everyone!

I recently received a facial from Haven Chapman and it was amazing! She was very gentle with my sensitive skin and knowledgeable on all of the products. She addressed the main concerns I had with my skin and I left with glowing skin. I would 100% recommend!

Today was my first time at Douglas J Aveda Institute in Royal Oak. I went in for highlights. I was very nervous about the color on my medium brown hair, because even though Ive been contemplating going lighter for a long time, my last couple times with highlights were not great. I read the reviews online and Briana Honor had a great review for doing color, so I scheduled my appointment with her. I was nervous going in because I didnt know what to expect, but the review I read did give me hope. I was not disappointed. From the moment she greeted me, Briana was very courteous and professional. She started with a consultation making sure she understood what I wanted and also taking into account what was possible with my hair color and the fact that I had previously colored it with box dye. She consulted with her educator Joe who was also very helpful and knowledgeable and we decided on baby highlights with a toner to get rid of the brass. Baby highlights as I learned are very fine highlights which create a more blended and natural look. Joe came over often to check on the progress and give tips, and Briana worked confidently and at a good pace. The result came out beautiful. It did in fact came out looking very natural and blended and I am extremely happy with the results. This is probably the best hair lightening experience Ive had at any salon and I will definitely be back!

I had my very first facial ever here today. I saw Jaime Goga. It was absolutely amazing! She explained everything, had the most wonderful, and calming presence. So relaxing and my skin feels so hydrated, soft and luminous.

I enjoyed my experience from the moment I entered for my appointment until I walked out. I had the awesome Ms. Bella who did an amazing job on my hair. I appreciated the instructors walking around and offering assistance and guidance to the students. More importantly, I loved how Bella asked for assistance when needed and handled feedback. I was in a pinch and couldnt get to my usual stylist and this was a great last minute decision. I made a same day appointment and they were open late. Great experience!

I went to Douglas J today for my first time and not sure what to expect. I walked out happy and satisfied. Rio gave me a shampoo and hair cut. Rio was very patient, offered suggestions because I was unsure what I wanted exactly, she was helpful, and very kind. I would absolutely go back to Rio for a hair cut in the future.

Today was my first time going and also my first time ever getting my hair colored. The student I had was Maria G. and she did a PHENOMENAL job on my hair and I am absolutely in love with it. She was very accommodating to my needs and was also super easy and fun to talk to. Rachel Mills gave me such a relaxing facial today, I highly recommend her. I went in with dry, tight winter skin, and came out smooth, soft, glowing skin. She knew exactly what my face needed. She listen to what I was concerned about, and I was very thankful and truly felt pampered.

I have not been to a salon in a very long time. I always felt I would be judged because taking care of my hair was never a major priority for me. My self care needed a reality check and I certainly got that today. I didnt make an appointment (a cardinal sin,I know now.) But they sweet receptionist at this location was able to squeeze me in.My stylist was Enrico E and he was a darling. Very clear and attentive, he styled my hair in a flipped out style. It didnt hold up an hour but I appreciated his customer service.What really sold this location and has me happy to return was how open and kind the students were. I ended up chatting with Whitney B about hair care and how best to achieve my hair goals. I will definitely be booking her next time.Overall I had a lovely experience and Im glad I stopped by.

Never cancel my appointments I came excited 30 minutes before 5 pm my appointment was at 5pm me and my daughterThe lady at the reception told me to wait since I came a lil early and 2 minutes before 5 pm they called me knowing I was in front of them telling me the student didn’t show up and I have to rescheduleI took a day off just to do my hair and took UBER I was so disappointed me and my daughter cause everyone else there was getting special treatment but usI will never forget what I been through todayI never cancels so don’t send me an email saying I canceled

Nyla Shepherd is AWESOME!!! She has been styling my hair on a weekly basis for 5 months!! I appreciate her skills and professionalism. She makes sure I am comfortable at the shampoo bowl as well as in her chair. She is knowledgeable about Aveda products, and chooses the ones that best meet my hairs needs, sometimes mixing them for a better result. She works wonders with the cowlicks in my bangs, which is no easy task. ; ) I will miss having her do my hair when she completes her coursework but Ill be happy for her, too. She will soon be joining the workforce as a licensed cosmetologist, where I know shell be sharing her awesomeness!!

I have been going to them for a few years and I love their services and costumer service. I usually stick to the one student and keep requesting her until they graduate. I had such a great experience with both Lia P and Kayla W! Kayla gave me a great hair cut and Lia gave me the best bayalage/highlight combo I’ve ever had! Both were extremely kind and professional and took the time to listen to what I wanted out of the experience. Cannot recommend both of them enough!

An egregiously inept front desk staff ruined my granddaughters three appointments today....and knew what they were about to do before they did it. But what was really breathtaking was the (clearly practiced) defensive posture the entire staff took upon my voicing my dissatisfaction. Everybody, I mean EVERYBODY, whipped out their phones to record the dispute and cover their own as$$es. I know this is a beauty school but NO ONE did anything to try and solve the problem. The receptionist even huddled up with the stylists before sending them over to us so they could help her cover her utter lack of experience. One must assume this happens a lot. Heres my advice: if you know you cant accommodate your client when she calls three weeks in advance to book the appointment, THEN DONT BOOK THE APPOINTMENT. The high level of drama does not mitigate the high level of incompetence. We will not return.

Cecilia Grassi was amazing! She cut both of my daughters hair, one of which was having their first haircut ever. She was gentle and kind towards them and took away any stresses they had going in. My 6 year old was nervous to get her haircut but Cecilia took her to the shampoos and let her smell all the scents and pick her favorite. It was the perfect way to make my daughter relax and enjoy the process. One of my daughters has very thick hair that is hard to brush and Cecilia gave her a subtle layered cut that has been a godsend! We can now brush it without tangles and tears. Cecilia was charming and thoughtful, we will absolutely be back!

Cheyenne was fantastic! I had a plant cell facial for the first time and everything was perfect. Her knowledge on skin types and skin care was great to listen to and will be used in my long-term skincare routine, I was walked through everything she did and why she was doing it. 10/10 will book again.

My first time there was really enjoyable. Everyone was really friendly. The student who worked with me was very nice and her instructor the guy with the beard was very friendly and nice and kinda cute too.Also Im grateful for the cost of the haircut because Im on disability and it was affordable. Mariah gave me the worst hair cut of my life. i asked for it to be collarbone length. It is so choppy and uneven. i’ve never felt so ugly, she shouldn’t have agreed to cut my hair when she wasn’t qualified

I had a great experience with a haircut with Megan Rush, she was sweet and thorough, and listened to what I wanted. It was nice to have her instructors there, because he was able to fine-tune the cut before styling. Afterward I had a facial with Kylee Labreck. She was charming and gentle with my skin. It was such a relaxing way to finish after the haircut, if you have the time. I am very delighted with both my services, and I will definitely be back.

I love coming here to get my hair done. It really doesnt take much longer than going to a salon and its probably, on average, at least 75 percent less in price. I have a new student every time (Ive gone at least 4 times now) and they have all been great. Very professional, easy to talk to, fun atmosphere. And an instructor always checks their work. Great value, great service. :) When I save up a bit more money, Im looking forward to trying one of their facials.

Update: Had my hair done for my daughters wedding by Lashand T. It was amazing! I arrived pressed for time and she was very accommodating throughout my visit. My hair turned out perfect. After I left and throughout my busy day (getting ready, the church ceremony, setting up at the reception, greeting guests, dancing) my hair looked the same at the end of the night as it did when I left the salon. I recieved so many compliments! Thank you so much, Lashand!!Decided last minute to get the 60 minute stress relief service. I was able to get an appointment the same day with Meghan S. What a great experience! It was so much more than I expected. Meghan was pleasant, friendly and very professional. Highly recommend ... I will definitely be back!

She had the patience and expert skill to diffuse my hair and use the right products to make it turn out silky smooth, manageable with springy ringlets. Kari does a fantastic job with my hair!!! I have been fortunate enough to be able to have her as my stylist on several occasions. I have very curly hair (definitely a challenge) and she had been super with handling all aspects of the process from washing, coloring to styling!!!! She have suggested me a good facial and confirmed with her instructor and there you go. I have taken a 60 minute facial with them and she took care of everything. Tonight, I just received the best facial I have ever gotten from my time coming to Aveda since I was a senior in high school (mid-2017). Lataizah F was amazing, and I never book services immediately afterward, but tonight as soon as I am done writing this review, I will be booking with her again. One of my biggest annoyances is that normally when I come to the school for facials, it feels rushed and not taking their time, but she took her time with it, which made it so much better. She also tried to get the most out of my facial by ensuring everything was done to the T and not brushing over certain actions. Im looking forward to my next service with her, and I think she will make it very far in this business!

My wife got a haircut from Manny. He did a great job and gave her tips on products for her hair. My wife was thrilled with his professionalism and how well he listed to what she wanted.

Recently in May and June of 2024 I had GREAT experiences with Rin and Natalie for Hair and Jenna for a Stress Relieving Treatment.2023:I had a great experience! Audrey gave my pixie the cutest blowout, and had a relaxing stress relieving treatment with Marley.This was a review from 4 years ago below.I have been coming here for a massage followed by a shampoo and style for more than five years. Yes, you heard that right. I have noticed a decline in management except for the male teacher for the hair students and one of the female teachers with red hair for the spa students. This is the second time they have botched my appointment. The scheduling people are mindless. The first time was in person and I was able to correct it. The second time I had no idea the person I spoke with booked my hair appointment first and my massage (you know with oils including scalp massage) after my shampoo and style. When I arrived tonight and the student discovered the problem, the front desk couldnt do anything about it. I have been coming to this location SINCE IT OPENED. They offered to comp my services but I couldnt have a hair appointment as planned. When I called to speak to the manager I was told I had spoken to the manager at the front desk. Oh, great! The woman who could have cared less that my appointment was botched and didnt bother to even try to go out of her way to make it right. So much for customer service

If I could give zero stars, I would.I made an appointment online, Jan. 24th for Friday, Feb. 2nd at 10 in morning to treat myself to a facial for my birthday and immediately got an email confirmation. I even got a text to confirm the day prior to my appointment. The salon is a 20 minute drive from my house, not including parking, which is a B in Royal Oak, but I found a spot in the parking garage, that thankfully was free for the first 2 hours. I arrived at the salon 3 minutes before my scheduled time (thanks to the parking situation) and went to check in. I was greeted and I told the girl I was there for my 10 am facial. She looks in the computer and says we dont have services on Fridays, asked what the services was and I told her. She just shakes her head and tells me that there are no services offered at this time. I responded why was I able to make an appointment then? and this guy jumps in and says that the system probably wasnt updated when I made the appointment. I then asked about the confirmation text I received and he said that was a different system too and they dont have anything to do with it. He told me that they called me, several times, to cancel but they probably had the wrong number however when he confirmed the number it was the correct number. He insisted that they called me several times and that there was probably something wrong with my phone. I was so taken aback by how rude and insistent they were that they did everything right and had an excuse for everything. Not one single apology, no accountability. I just stood there and finally just said, well I guess Ill just go then. And then the girl asked me if I wanted to schedule another appointment. I looked at her (probably like are you a total idiot) and just said no and left. At 10:03 am I got an email from J Douglass saying my request to cancel was successfully processed.Someone clearly did not do their job. I did not yell, I was not rude, I was just so gob smacked at how indignant both of them were. I mean what can I do? Demand that they find someone to give me a facial? I am just glad I didnt pay to park.In the future, I would hope that during this kind of mix up, the people at the reception desk would show sympathy, apologize and try to retain a customer, because rest assured, I will not be back and I will tell everyone about this experience. My regular salon messed up an appointment times due to a system error and they gave me free product to make up for it. Im so sorry that you came all this way, let me look into what happen, but in the meanwhile can we offer you a discount on your next appointment? I honestly have never been treated so poorly in a customer service situation. I should have asked for their names but a Karen, I am not. I can say it was the girl and guy working the front desk Friday morning, Feb 2 at 10 am. They both can use some training.

Updating March 2024:I went in for a haircut (trim) as usual but the student nicked my skin with the scissors while trimming my bangs. I felt the sting during but didnt realize my face above my eyelid was actually punctured until I got in my car and checked as it was still stinging. I remember flinching when I felt the scissors touch my skin but the student didnt stop and continued to cut my bangs the same way (scissors against my face and eyes) even though I was uncomfortable and the instructor had cut it differently (lifting the hair away from the face). Im very upset at the mark that was made and the fact that my response did not make the student check to see if anything was wrong.Secondly while drying my hair, the student was incredibly rough while finger combing my hair to the point where my head was jerking around. Ive never had an unpleasant experience before and am sad to have had my first one.~~~~Stef was absolutely Amazing! Super personable and friendly, she definitely made me feel energized and calm leaving the place. The ladies at the front desk were also incredible. All around awesome experience for a first haircut since the beginning of the pandemic!

Haircut and balayage-style highlights over two appointments, with two nearly-graduating students, and couldnt be happier. Anna gave me a great cut with long layers, and a couple of days later, Sam spiced it up with all over highlights and a tone to work out some underlying red I used a few months ago. I love my haircut from Sahiya! :) I came in with a rough idea of what I wanted, but I was clueless on any of the specific details. Sahiya spent so much time with me to figure that out, and I am so happy with the results!

Wow! Caitlin did a phenomenal job with my highlights. I’m working toward blending my natural grey into my hair color, and she was spot-on. Oh, and the wash was absolutely the best. THE BEST. It’s no secret their sinks are uncomfortable, but let Caitlin do your shampoo and you won’t notice the sinks. 😂She graduates soon, so hurry up and get in there because you will NOT be disappointed.

I have had several hair cuts at Douglas J Aveda but last night’s really stood out. Alexia T was my stylist and she listened to exactly what I wanted, confirmed my expectations and let me know what she would be doing every step of the way. I had a significant length of hair cut off and she was professional and friendly. Chatting with me the entire time. She is hands down the best stylist I’ve had since I started going to the school for hair cuts. She was confident and cut my hair with no assistance needed from her supervisor. If they could accept tips, I would have tipped her well for a fantastic job. I will be back to see her before her graduation.

Ive had many facial in my life, but the regular facial I had with SONIA was an event in supreme pampering and relaxation. Her technique is so wonderful - her hands are soft and tender, yet firm and supple when called for. I wish I could think of more superlatives to describe this experience!! I highly recommend that everyone go to Douglas J Aveda for a facial with Sonia. I already have my next one (plant based!) scheduled!!!Update: Well...I had the plant-based facial. And boy-oh-boy! Sonia did NOT disappoint! Her approach is just so exquisite! I felt so pampered and relaxed. This was truly the best facial Ive ever had. I do enjoy the Aveda products that are used, but it is the uniqueness and professionalism of the practitioner (SONIA) that takes this experience to the next level!

Just received a Stress Relieving Treatment from Devan H in AM Esti-Absolutely Amazing!!!She was super sweet and friendly, applied great pressure, and used fantastic form and techniques. It was totally what I needed. 12/10 :) thanks girl!

I just had a 90 minute facial with Marlee Leffler and I feel fantastic!! I never felt so relaxed and my skin is absolutely glowing!! She is gentle and friendly and makes you feel comfortable. Highly recommend!

I booked with STARR M.Pros: talented, highly professional, knowledge, gentle, considerate, kind, and did I say talented?Con: students can’t receive tips. It was a lot of work for nonzero compensation.My hair was a kinky mess when I got there -hadn’t been to a shop in over a year. Starr gave the best scalp massage and I CANNOT stress how gentle she was (with my hair & in Spirit!)! 🥹I told her she can didn’t have to be so grntle because I understand - my hair was a mess …( Said multiple times lol). But she refused to mistreat my delicate hair - and I appreciate that so much. I didn’t even realize that was an expectation based on past experiences. When she blew my hair out I was gagged- never knew it could look so healthy. But these braids! Baby! They’re precise, equally sized and long! The diligence!! Not to mention Starr was not informed of all that I needed done - but her colleagues gathered around and got it done. Truly thank all you beautiful souls!One thing I would do different is take picture the day of - but these baby’s still fresh!Secondly, not schedule both services in one day because it was a lot! But I highly recommend Starr M, and her colleagues 💯💯💯

I had my first facial done today with Madison Buerkle! It was the most relaxing experience. Throughout the whole experience of the facial I was comfortable and relaxed! She did such an amazing job and my skin has never felt more soft and smooth. Overall is was the perfect first facial experience. I highly recommend going to Madison!!

I received leg, underarm wax along with a stress reliever massage and eyebrow tint. Zakiyah had me leaving the spa like a whole new person. If I could afford it I would make this a weekly thing. Zakiyah was professional and kind. Wish her the best in her Career. I know she is going to do fantastic with her intensiveness to her clients.

My hairdresser and haircut were absolutely amazing, I was so impressed with the service! Why this salon will not allow for their students accept tips however is beyond me. I refuse to support such activity and will be returning to Paul Mitchel the School, where Ive been going for about 10 years, and where their girls are allowed to collect tips. Exceptional service though (on the evening of Sept 11), I felt very cared for by both the student and supervisor!

I have been coming there over 7-8 yrs. Only had one bad experience where the student cut my hair in the back too short and uneven. No big deal its only hair I said and it grows back. Up to now all the students have been great!!! Joe the instructor is also good at what he does. Worst haircut of my life. What I asked for vs what I got…. I just needed a bang trim. The bangs were already there! Just needed a TRIM. The student that cut my hair is only two months from graduation and I trusted she would be able to do a simple bang trim, as many at this salon have before.Wrong.Not a word from the manager or any apology from any of her “supervisors” when I was literally crying in the chair. Do not go to Allison for any complicated cut. Worst haircut of my life and I don’t know what I’m going to do for the next two months. I have a work holiday party in a week and I look ridiculous and any revision would just make them shorter. I’m beside myself. The fact that not a single supervisor or manager said a word to me about the horrible hack job I got has put me off of ever coming back. Completely unprofessional. Whatever manager worked Friday Nov 24 at 5 pm was absolutely negligent in supervising my cut. The woman who “approved” the cut could tell it was much shorter than I had wanted and said nothing to me—she was a Black gal with a blond pixie cut. Not a WORD about the state of my hair. She suggested taking even more length off the sides of the bangs as though that would help! (Not only was the cut way too short but it was clearly also crooked! Yay!) She and Allison both need training on how to cut BASIC BANGS. Absolutely awful.

Riley Z. is fantastic! My entire experience today was terrific. I wanted to chop a good few inches off my hair; Riley listened to what I wanted and we figured it out as we went, even toward the end when I wanted some more cut off. At just about each step, she asked her instructor to confirm her plan for my hair before going about with the trim. She put me at ease throughout the whole process, and I can count on one hand the salon experiences Ive had that made me feel as good as I did today. I am so ecstatic with how it turned out, and totally recommend Riley Z. for your next hair appointment!!

She confirmed and double checked with me about exactly what I wanted so there was no room for miscommunication. I really enjoyed her service and my hair looked gorg by the end of my appointment.
