This place is a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community. The bartenders are all wonderful, the owner is really nice also. Love love love the community!!!
New owner has made some nice upgrades to the back patio, however the drink prices went way up. Also the Happy Hour is literally only an hour, 5:30pm-630pm. Just up the block is Splash with a 4 hour Happy Hour and drinks 1/4 price of Macs.A dive gay bar shouldnt have Fairmont Hotel lobby bar drink prices.Macs used to be a fun stop, but not anymore. Bummer.
This was my neighborhood gay bar. Pains me to rate em down. They were an excellent dive bar. They have just jacked up their prices to ultra lounge prices. Hoped the change of ownership would bring positive changes or at least status quo. Budlight tap beer is pushing $10... Two thumbs down. Splash next door, although its a club, they are way more reasonable, they have buy one get one for a $1 during happy hour. Good thing theres a mix over at Caravan, realistic prices at a legit dive bar. Not a gay bar, but everyone is welcome there.
Aj was our bartender, never had to ask for a drink and food came super fast. The couple next to me spoke very highly of aj and Hannah. Will definitely be back!
I think this place is gross. The guys are rude. I feel bad enough being gay. Now I just feel even worse. Thanks for treating me like garbage. I also dont think its a transgender safe space. I was treated poorly by the patrons and staff while in makeup etc. They called me names like big bertha and made me feel bad. I feel 100% unwelcome here. Its a shame bar not a pride bar. Update...looks like she destroyed Don Pedros. She always gets the last laugh. Eye for an eye and castles made of sand fall in the sea eventually.
I came here to kill some time before an appointment I had in the area. This is a small and efficient gay-themed (but I felt totally comfortable just being myself) bar that plays great music. Of course, since its on Post Street in downtown San Jose, the parking is nil to nonexistent. The patrons are nice and the drinks are cold. I will return again in the future, Im sure of that.
They had a random guy that was drinking at the bar check IDs. And the whole group of people/ friends that were their all looked while I was asking since when do they check IDs. Because even during covid they werent checking for no IDs or vaccination card or a 72 hour rapids test. It was very unpleasant going their and having two out of three bartenders their request ID again at the bar?! Super confused I asked a regular who goes there and he stated that their all friends and not to let them know that he told me their checking IDs and double charging the drink to non locals.
My personal opinion of loving this place. Its definitely its unique own little kick back bar. They open at 12pm and go all the way till 2am. The staff has been the same for as long as Ive been going. Which has been just about 2 years almost every day. The people that come in are great and if you end up getting intoxicated and getting the drunchies they have a taco stand and hot dog stand just right outside. (not part of Macs astablishment)
Its unfortunate, because we do like this place. Place is the key word. There is one bartender who is ALWAYS rude to us. I dont think he likes women coming in. Today I came in with my (real, certified) service dog, and he wouldnt even let me in the door. He claimed the city of San Jose wont allow him to have service dogs. I let him know that its illegal to turn someone away for having a service dog and went on my way. The folks nextdoor at Labrinth are more than nice and immediately welcomed us in.
I do not recommend this place at all. I was here for work from Denver and figured I’d check this place out. The customer service from the bartender was a joke. He was so disorganized and kept serving people as they walked up to the bar while others had been standing there waiting a long time. Everyone was getting upset and he had no clue what was going on. My friends and I finally left without even getting a drink. I’m disappointed in the service and will absolutely not come back when I’m in town again. Unbelievably disappointed.
Fun and relaxed place to unwind. I visited here after a long night downtown, and just wanted be somewhere chill where I can sit back and enjoy my beer. This place was exactly that!
Its a small step above a dive. If youre not into the club scene, this is quite a bit slower. Come here if you want to unwind. The drinks are reasonably priced but selection is smallish. If youre a liquer connoisseur, this place wont cut it,.The clientele is generally not pretentious, not too young, not too old, not too aggressive.
We tried to go into Macs during the #SanJoseJazz festival on Saturday at 4:00pm with our friends with a small service dog and were verbally abused. Not a friendly place at all. The bartender threw the note my friend has re disability into the trash and refused to serve us. Her small service dog is well trained and is hardly an issue. Macs doesnt like people who need a service dog.
RUDE RUDE RUDE. I will NEVER go back. The bartender wouldnt let me use the bathroom and I had just been stuck in traffic until i gave him money. I HATE leaving my drinks unattended. So incredibly weird/rude/not the warm hospitality i have gotten from every other gay bar Ive been to. SPLASH you are awesome!
I came here on a Saturday and I waited in line for 15 minutes to use the bathroom, then manager Matteo cut in front of everyone and threatened everyone if they questioned the cut. Great business model spider man, I’ll never come back to this horribly-ran business. I hope this establishment fails relatively quickly.
Great place to socialize, meet men, and have hookups
Was asked to leave at 145 pm even before i was able to grab a stool. Sorry i had a 90% empty water bottle and i didnt know your policy about outside fluid containers. Didnt even get a chance to form a good opinion about here, too bad that this bartender was so rude, he could have gotten a good tip!
Nothing really struck me as impressed to the max. But the service was great as is the music . I never felt rushed to order theres a great atmosphere and even on the slow day I was there it still retained that comfort. Definitely returning will be my mindset about Macs
People seemed nice Couldn’t get a second drink as bartender didn’t ever come back my way Didn’t seem busy, just seemed more interested in playing musicWas there 5-12, about 9pm
The bartender was polite & professional this afternoon. What a difference a few months make.. Cant wait to go back! Hope the bathroom gets fixed by then 😘
Normally a great stop when enjoying Downtown SJ street life, but not when a particular, rotund, bartender is on watch, in which case his disdain for women and any possible issue he can use to shoo them off is in plain view like when my friends, with their service dogs (and all necessary documentation) were dismissed with a youll never win declaration. What a fat tool! (Heres to the inevitable Type 2 diabetes diagnosis in your future Mr Hospitality 👍)
Maxs Bar or should I say Matts Bar is wonderful bar the drinks are really expensive for the amount you receive in your glass the bartender is outrageous a nice relaxed crowd. I suggest you stop him during happy hour.
Macs is fun, I be been going here for years, even when it was located on 1st street. Bartenders come and go but the club itself is almost a dive ( the fun kind!) Currently the bartender line up are awesome!
I come here every time I visit San Jose. Its right next to splash. The bartenders are funny. And the back patios convenient. Will definitly return.
Only had one cider but the bartender was super chill and the place had a good vibe.
I heard great things but they flat out turn away service dogs. Back to looking for a gay welcoming refuge that is also fitting for folks with certain disabilities.
Totally disrespectful to the older crowd! I’m one of the originals from the 70’s and the way they treated me tonight because all I wanted was the the Address to call a Uber and they were to to busy to help me me was so very unprofessional and disrespectful the way they treated me! Very upset on the the way they treated me
My new hangout place!!! I like going here during the week nights when its not too crowded. I just hangout in the patio drink my favorite AMF and play my favorite music through touch tunes.
My first time back in years, wow has this place changed. It used to be a sad dive bar but now is filled with all types of folks. Only negative is that its cash only.
Older crowd, but super friendly patrons and staff. Great place to grab a beer and relax. Cash only
I ordered a modelo especial beer and a bald bartender did not attend me. terrible service.
On Monday is happy hour the price of beer is good ( that it .
I never went inside there. I would not be able to tell you anything.
They have a nice cozy back patio.
Awesome place with REAL local crowd.. no flash necessary
Small and quaint... somewhere to go if youre just tryna chill
Worst service ever. Whos dick do I gotta suck to get a beer? Seriously!
Sassy bartender with mostly ice for drinks
Best Bar in Downtown San Jose!!!
Great atmosphere 😇
Dive bar chic!
Awesome place!
Love this place
