Fantastic time here. It has a luxurious speakeasy vibe. Drinks were great! There was a cover for their live band for the night, which ended up being awesome as well. They had tacos from Soul Fusion Twist Catering out back - which were amazingly delicious! Great first time here.
Not cheap, but unique and fun. The place has a vintage bar vibe. We have visited on two different Wednesdays for their karaoke with a live band. We have had a great time both times. The band is amazing at backing up random singers, and most of the singers are great/hyper-enthusiastic. The food is out back with a separate vendor, and it was really good, too. Bouncers/doorman are effective, but sweet. The drinks are light for their price IMO ($16 each), but the bartender is cool. Don’t show up early! It doesn’t get rolling until 9:30-10:00 p.m.. and don’t forget to tip the band, as well as all the other folk!
My first time at the Santa Monica location was Friday night March 1. OMG what a great experience. First off Damien who reserved two seats for me because of my back issues seemed to know me when I walked in. Impressive since I have never met him before. He made me and my guest feel so welcomed. Fixed some great drinks too. As I was leaving after the great night of music, Damien told me and my guest if there is a band we are coming there to see again contact him and hell hook us up. More music venues can learn from Damien on how to provide quality customer service to patrons. Our waitresss niceness and quality service matched her incredible beauty. More clubs waitresses can learn from her on how to provide excellent customer service. Loved the experience.
Went for the Miss Nasty show and it was a superhit. Once in a while go and sit and enjoy! The place is small but a good bar. Right in Santa Monica. One thing bad was that closer to the end of the show people from the road just walked in, felt bad for someone like me who paid for the show! The admin should be more judicious.
The only thing is karaoke is cool, but the band needs to learn new music. The taco man outside is amazing, great food . Karaoke on Wednesdays live old school band.
Manager/bar tender/loser is incredibly rude. Scammy vibe. Held card hostage. Unauthorized charges. My boyfriend left his credit card here a little over a week ago. We were traveling so it took him a few days to come back to retrieve it. The bar opens at 8, he went in around 9pm to get his card. The bartender/manager told him they were too busy to go in the back and grab it, so he would need to come back another night. This was odd, but he lives in the neighborhood so he agreed to come back in a day or so. Tonight he went in and was met with the same “we’re too busy I can’t go get it,” but this time more aggressive and rude. At this point they are refusing to give him back his property. We also checked his card and there were unauthorized charges. There is nothing cool about this place and the bartender/manager is a real piece of trash. Scum of the earth actually. Don’t go here.Sound is also garbage. If you’re in a band, don’t play here.
The band was off, not a good night. There is a food truck. Service is transactional. Atmosphere is great, but not trendy or snotty.
Had the best time here during our weekend in Santa Monica. Service was great and The Toledo Show killed it! Cant wait to return. Well definitely be back. Cheers from Michigan.
Visiting from Michigan. Great place. We experienced two different shows in consecutive nights. The Toledo Show and All Star Jam Session Benefit. Two very different shows but both were fantastic. The Toledo Show (photos, pre-show and mid sax solo) is an experience but the All Star Jam is a vibe with some crazy talented musicians who are equally as welcoming and personable.
I never imagined getting hit at a bar by a dancer. She hit my head with her knee, and no one came to ask if Im okay. I felt dizzy and left the bar, and went to the ER. It was a dangerous bar and business.
Been at the Monday jam session a few times, good vibe! Will try to be here every week. Not sure if food is still served here, never seen anyone eating...
The band was great, but the drinks were terrible. The old fashioned was watery and just wrong, the mai tai tasted like bubblegum, and common drink requests like a mojito they couldnt do at all. Get your drinks before you come
From the moment we got to the door things were not impressive. A $5 cover fee to get in on a monday?? We have to pay the bartender our cover if we dont carrry cash and show the receipt, despite the fact the bartender was dismissive and only cared about making money. 2 drink minimum on cards so I got 2 old fashioneds for me and my friend. Terrible, using a sugar packet that I would put in my coffee is not what I expected for an old fashioned, not even simple syrup! Tasted like all liquor no flavors of angostura or orange and cherry he muddled and did a single half-hearted shake to mix. Then when we drank our tasteless old fashioneds, if I wanted to get another drink if I closed out my original tab its another 2 drink minimum for a new one! So my original transaction meant nothing, just a policy to get you to spend more. The vibes dont balance the rules that want to take your money. Go somewhere else and save yourself the time and agony.
The coolest place I’ve ever been to, seriously. If you can catch I would assume any show here it would be worth it. The bouncer, Ron, was a highlight of the night. The almost blue drink was perfect and refreshing, try it! The rest of the staff and atmosphere were unmatched. If I can ever make it back I will. The bathrooms were even clean which is always the biggest plus to me.
From the doorman to the owner working the bar some nights, this place is total class and professionally run, with zero pretentiousness one might find in other LA establishments.Such great history and friendly crowds. I never go here without meeting someone new and interesting. Come by yourself and leave with new friends. And the live band karaoke is the best I’ve ever been to. So friendly and they always help you along the way when you are challenged at remembering the lyrics (even though they are right on screen in front of you! Lol).Damien, Mark, and the bouncer out front, keep up the great work. Amazing place and I always make sure to stop by when I’m town.
Harvelles feels like Santa Monica best kept secret. While it may seem like a dive bar outside, the small cozy vibe inside makes it the perfect place to include on any date night. The drinks are fairly cheap considering its Santa Monica location, but they are definitly worth every penny and then some. The Bartenders are nice and take their time to make the cocktails to your liking. However my favorite thing about this place was the live music. The band playing on tuesday sounded great, and gave quite a show. They danced on the bar top, engaged with patrons sitting at tables, and the music was loud enough to enjoy. But not so loud it you couldnt have a conversation. Final thought: add this place for the start or end to your night out on the town
Amazing place, music and atmosphere but the blond server that serve me was so rude the whole night and make a good night turn in a really bad ans stressful night but other than her amazing place
Harvelles hosts the most accomplished musicians - Artur Menezes for example. The dance floor is right in front of the band and we have such a great time every time we go. Theyve been around for decades and even with management changes, theyve not lost their commitment to live music and dancing at a reasonable price. Many thanks!
The waitress acted and maybe meant to be nice, but she was coming by every 2 minutes, ranging from “are you ok” to “can I bring you anything”. Not much diversity there. The place was also packed for Thursday night football. While it was slightly annoying, we enjoyed ourselves playing pool and making new friends. They have about 6-7 tables downstairs and some upstairs.
The sloth tastes like spicy/sweet red mexican candy ♥️ i also liked the mules
Eh. Was karaoke night on a Wednesday, maybe better on a different night. Overall nothing bad, nothing special.
The ambiance is one of a kind! Love the owner he is always super friendly! Loved this place...It definitely reminds me of a speakeasy! Burlesque shows are all the rage.
It was worth the pay. The music was good. The only thing I didnt care for was how its shaped. The stage is all the way in the front and if someone is taller than you you cant see. Brought tickets ahead of time then emailed for seats that went great.
Old school since 1931, cool dive bar that opens at 800pm. We saw Led Zepagain play on stage.
The bar itself is nice, good atmosphere and gold music. The drinks are watered down. You want whats is essentially a Old Fashioned flavored La Croix for $16 plus a tip for basic service, this is the place for you. With live music it can be fun, otherwise I regret spending money here.
Came here on Wednesday night for live band karaoke celebrating my birthday and my friends and I all had a blast! The band is really good with a fun stage with good lighting and effects. I’ve also been to Toledo Show on Sunday’s many times and that is also a must-see show on the west side. Always a good time at Harvelle’s!
This live blues lounge is a Santa Monica classic. It’s been here forever. Everybody loves it. The beer is a little bit expensive but it’s like music so what do you expect. The management here used to work at liquid kitty which was one of my favorite places. DJ Starr is there on Wednesdays for live band karaoke which is not to be missed.
Great place, smallish in size. Get there early to grab a seat at the bar or at a table. Drinks are expensive, but the staff are friendly and respectful. I came here to see two bands, but in between sets they had a little burlesque show of dancers to tease the crowd. The parking structure is right next door and that was a bonus for convenience and safety. Think it cost $4. Overall a fun night!
Wonderful open mic night. Friendly crowd and a lot of talent.
What a place, we went on Halloween night, had a blast, great music by No Chaser, things really got going around 10:30, we are from Vancouver Canada and can’t wait to get back, thanks for a great evening!!!
This place has such history !! Not only is it a vibe but it should be a historical landmark. Opening in 1931 and holding L.A.s oldest liquor license, this place is sure to capture your attention. I went there for the LIVE BAND KARAOKE of course !! ( Wednesday nites ) The band was great !! I felt like a Rockstar !! And serving the best drinks ever is Veronica tending bar. She has a friendly vibe and is super cool. The all red , sexy interior is perfect for lots of photo ops also !! They have shows there all weekend and jams on Monday nite. Hope to see you there !! Ill be the one singing loud !! And drawing a crowd !!
Would love to hear from owner. I was drinking here there other night. Set my coat down and mistook a jacket of an employee (the door man) . He looked through the transactions . Found my name , found my address, called me and threatened me , I had to file a report and call the police .i apologized profusely but he kept trying to get money out of me . I told him that I’ll look for his jacket and give it to the police since I don’t feel safe be around him because he threatened me. Bombarded me with messages. Harassed me with phone calls and put my family in danger by coming to their front door and scream and pounding on it. I have records , pictures and messages.Kept apologizing and letting him know that after he received back his jacket (an honest mistake) to file a civil suit but instead kept harassing me. Your employees are dangerous.
I went here to hear a band. The venue is long and skinny with a very small amount of seating. All of the tables near the band were reserved before we even arrived when the doors opened at 8:00. So we sat very far away and our view was blocked most of the time. The sound is plenty good so you can certainly hear. The people were very friendly and it was a mellow crowd.
It’s been awhile but when I haunted this place it had the best musicians blasting their talent with an inviting dance floor. Some of the best times ever!
EM and the gems were fantastic. Such a lively Christmas gig, so much energy. Very cool bar area and booths and friendly barkeep. Literally nothing else happening late-night on a Tuesday in Santa Monica, so finding this place was a treat.
Incredibly unfriendly and quickly combative / hostile owners kicked us out less than 10 minutes after serving us drinks. They cited closing time but it was still well before 2AM - and if they were so hot and bothered to close up, then why did they take our money and serve us drinks?
This place was pretty cool, the singer and dancers were good. Good drink menu but kind of expensive. You pay a cover charge but they give you a wrist band to re-enter. With that said, you might as well go next door for drinks that are cheaper. They didnt quite start on time and the intermission was much longer than they said. They have a dance floor during intermission. This place is small and gets crowded/no seats available
This is one of my favorite spots in Santa Monica. There is live music just about every night and its always good. The staff is like family and the vibe is always good. Especially since they remodeled everything, the whole place is so great. 10/10 would recommend.
Love the vibe of this place. It is really fun to go for live music. Cocktails not amazing but they have a lot of options for other drinks.
Love Singing here on Mondays All Star Pro Jam Live LA Top Session Players Benefit For Children that they may have and learn a instrument only 5 dollar Cover. best venue in LA for seeing top performer live. Go you will love it.
I loved the live performance inside. Hats off to the band! However, the bartender was extremely rude; he refused to make us virgin Margarita because “it tastes so bad”. I repeated my request thinking that it was a joke, he declined again. Unbelievable
You can buy a show ticket ahead of time and still not get a good table because nowhere does it say that you can reserve tables when you buy your ticket online. So locals reserved all the good spots and I couldnt see much. The bar is fine but for a show, if I cant see, then Id prefer it to be free. Or at the very least inform people that hey, even if you get here early, if you didnt call or email the bar then youre S-o-l. In any case - even though the dancers move around it is still very possible to miss a lot and spend inordinate amounts of time craning your neck. Not comfortable.
Amazing place for music in Santa Monica.I have spent many nights here at Harvelles.Seating is slightly limited but the venue is amazing.Great blues! Ive seen some really sweet shows here.I used to come for the Burlesque as well, that was always fun.I love popping in for a drink and to listen to their music.Sweet place
Awesome doorman, he had great recommendations. Dark lit and sexy atmosphere with solid live music. Great for couples.
This is a great spot in Santa Monica; a true classic. Went there for the first time to see Little Miss Nasty Burlesque. The ambiance, bar service, music, and of course the show were all great. I believe they have live music performances throughout the week. A highly recommended spot.
Didnt know what to expect going in. Friend brought me there without teling me anything. Loooved it! Amazing live music, great dancers, bar works fast. Highly recomended. Its a taste of fresh air. You cant compare it to anything. Its just Harvelles.
Jazz / blues was 150% dancers high kicking....please stop I just came for the music. At least higher professional dancers.Drinks were great. Was not into being told to move my drinks for poor performers that could not work a crowed.Jazz / blues are great - full bar!I had given them an honest review and then the bartender kicked me out...after saying he was the owner.. I had to give this a one star at that time..I was with a group paying ten each to come in. Was really looking forward to this location.I’d wait till your customer gives the total review to call the employees to kick customers out....Dont write a review while sitting at this location.... I dropped my 3 star to a one.*Reviews are not personal. They are strictly professional.
Great music and lively patrons
The Toledo show is amazing! The music and the dancers put on a wonderful performance. It gets pretty packed, especially on a 3-day weekend, so get there early if you want a seat.
The Toledo Show on Sunday nights is the best show in town.
I recently headed to harvelles to see some live music. It was close to the end of the night so not much on offer but was keen to head in and have a drink, after all was still 2 hours till closing. I was ignored and all the white people were served and then at 1 am was forced out the door while a white person remained at the bar. Racist, unwelcoming and rude place and I’d spent the previous week travelling through the Deep South. Deeply depressing and offensive. But that’s people for you I guess
Wanted to check out some live music while in Santa Monica, but the doorman wouldn’t let us in. Took our money, then decided to refund us and make us leave. Weird situation. Would not recommend Harvelle’s, unfortunately.
Hidden gem for live music. When im 8n Santa Monica, i go here almost every night. In a place where NOTHING is inexpensive, you can see first rate entertainment that wont break your wallet. Great taco stand out back on the weekends.
Last night my friend and I had the best night of our lives at Harvelle’s! I’m visiting from Seattle and normally don’t go out that often because I feel the music scene has gone downhill. So I can’t express enough gratitude to all the amazing performers that played and sang from their hearts Wednesday night. My mind was blown. I was so impressed by the awesome talent that showed up. It’s definitely renewed my interest in live music again. Thank you!!
This is a great bar with great shows
Passed by on a random monday, heard the music and decided to have a look in. Best decision ever, the all star jam was amazing, everything in a nice and cozy atmosphere. True La La Land vibes!
Returned to Harvelles recently to see the Delgado Bros. What can you say about a legendary joint? The kind of place that defines the term? Open for 91 years this is a classic lounge bar. Used to be a burlesque room. The list of legendary musicians whove played here?! Friendly staff, strong drinks. Restored interior, mood lighting, intimate music room...Youre there.
Performed here once, over five years ago.
Awesome little place. I found this establishment by accident and have been back many times now. The live music is out of this world and the drink come quick and are relatively inexpensive for this part of town.
I come to Harvelles for the music. The space is not perfect. If you dont arrive when the doors open at 8pm you might not get a table), but its fun and has very reasonable cover charge $12- $15. Drink service is slow, but there is no pressure to buy. Its been around for many decades. The blues rock music (Cafe R&B, Dennis Jones, etc.) is often excellent, though sometimes hampered by poor sound engineering. We usually buy food next door then eating at table in Harvelles, while the band sets up. Fun!!
I hate to give 1 star as this is my favorite go to for amazing live music but if you are a female dont expect to get service from the female bartender on Thursdays. She ignored every woman at the bar and only talked to men to serve them. My friend tried to get her attention and she snapped at her then kept ignoring the women only. She needs an attitude adjustment or needs to be fired. Ive never had such a bad experience here. Luckily the music is atleast great but hire better staff that dont discriminate :(
The Band is Popping but the Toledo singers voice is grating, irritating and off putting. Why he wears fly fishing pants I dont know. I left after an hour. No wonder he needs beautiful butt naked girls to distract the audience. I will come back for another artist. Cute club .
The band was great apparently they play every first Saturday there. The place seems like a classic LA cockail bar. Basic beers in bottles and cans, no taps. Its dark and red and pretty classic.
A super fun, neighbourhood blues club that always plays host to some incredibly interesting bands and shows.Fantastic selection of drinks, great sound and they have a rock and roll, burlesque-style residency once a month or so that is bomb!
Went for the Liquid Kitty Punk Rock BBQ (sans BBQ!). Clean and functional Mens Room. Fair (to weak) drinks. Good music, better than expected sound, can get real crowded...no bbq, hotdogs.
Went for NYEs and it was fun the frontman got a little snockered and didnt finish his final set but the bartender was great considering it was PACKED. The ONE waitress worked her tail off, and the prices were surprisingly good. Had a little taco stand in back...wed visit again if in the area.
Nice place. Good for people of all ages. Unpretentious and very welcoming this is the kind of place you can use to kick it up a notch. Great atmosphere and the staff is responsive. Go there for a fun night on the town
Very nice atmosphere, good music from the band, people were friendly and dancing.
I had heard of harvelles for years, but only finally went in to catch the sunday night toledo show this past weekend. the band just smoked. absolutely amazing. the dancers and the vibe just added to things, but hearing such a great music performance made me sad to have missed out on years of this. ill be back!
I am right here now. This place is amazing and great. The bartender so great and nice. keep it up!!
Had an issue with an order that was made and Ashley failed to provide good customer service. She was extremely rude and ultimately resulted in my group and I leaving to another bar. This is unfortunately the second time Ashley has ruined our experience at Harvelles. Stay away.
Outstanding music! Expensive drinks, but worth it because of the entertainment on Monday nights.
Fn awesome show. Madame dees bday party was everything AND some! Small quaint spot for down home blues great drinks awesome people with vibes outta this world! The Toledo show is something u dont wanna miss, hes here too!
Small and narrow but cozy and friendly. This is as good a rhythm and blues bar youre going to find in this area.....check out who the live performances are before going on their website....
Very entertaining, not a big place so it gets very packed. Drinks were good service was good, music was great!
Love the atmosphere and history of the place. Great place for music. We went when Juice and Drank played and it was a blast.
This place made my trip. Miss this place. Live entertainment was more than I expected. Made my visit to California incredible. The drinks werent very good.
Some friends and I came here last Saturday to see The Dennis Jones Band. As per usual, they were amazing and kept the place rockin all night. As much as I love seeing them play-- I dont think Ill ever be back here. The service was enough to make me cringe. We arrived earlier in the evening after having dinner on 3rd Street and claimed our booth. A friend of mine ordered a dirty martini that was sub-par to say at the least. It was disgusting and the olive juice tasted stale. She took two sips of it and didnt touch it again. The waitress that night- or at least I think she was a waitress- was rude and couldnt have been anymore unenthusiastic. After throwing a napkin in front of me and dryly saying What can I get you?, I decided to order a gin and tonic. Now, I myself am a bartender and I am also a mysophobe, also known as a germ-a-phobe. I was happily talking to my friends and watching the bartender make my drink. *Quick Tip-- Every bar, by law, has to have three separate containers to wash, rinse and sanitize any tool you use behind the bar, at a temperature that is to aid in killing bacteria. Its also known that you must have an ice scoop to put ice into your shaker when making chilled drinks.*To my horror, I watched the bartender make another customers drink, sit the drink on the bar, and sitting the metal shaker on the spill mat(Which is also highly contaminated with growing bacteria), take money from the customer, put it in his till, pick up his metal shaker and scoop the ice using the shaker, contaminating every ice cube he touched with the metal shaker as well as my entire drink. Not only did he do that-- I also received whatever else was left over in the shaker from the other customers drink. Now-- This isnt Harvelles complete fault. I do believe they should have stricter rules for the bartender and maybe hire a waitress that wants to be there. I couldnt tell you if the drink was good because I refused to drink it after watching possible E.Coli be thrown so carelessly into my drink. I understand this might seem a little overzealous about a few miniscule mistakes in someone elses eyes, and you might think Well, its a dive bar.. Regardless if its the Ritz or its a Dive Bar, laws are there for a reason and to prevent illness and possible death. Shame on you, Harvelles. If it wasnt for that, Id be here all the time. I had a great time but the poor service and the fear of drinking anything was enough to put a damper on the evening.
Great service and awesome prices for a show but too narrow a venue for sound quality and view from the back.
Great environment, great music, great bartender. 9/10 would recommend.05/19/22
Good place, good drinks and great live music. Only place in the area really hopping on a tuesday.
We went to see Maesyn last Wed night. A very talented and beautiful soul. Hope to see more of her performance in the future. She is an amaZing talent.
Small bar with great service. The bartenders are amazing! Quick, friendly service and strong drinks. Great spot for music and to hang with friends.
Very cool spot! It feels like you are stepping into the 70s when you walk into this bar. I saw the Westside Wisemen play a show and I will be back to see them for sure.
Awesome music and great fun. There was a jam session with great local musicians. The decor is a bit bland, but music makes up for it.
Not great for my first time here. The band that was supposed to play didnt show up. And the substitute band didnt start till 2 hours after starting time.
Great dive bar with great entertainment my absolute favorites are Cafe R&B a wonderful blues band lead singer is Roach and she is off-the-charts amazing she has great energy on stage and is a sweetheart along with her husband badass guitar player BYL Caruthers my other favorite is Toledo Dimond and the Toledo show great dancing an aerial performance along with musicians and singing cant be beat bartenders are always nice pricing is okay places small and gets packed so get ready to take a deep breath and have fun with people very close contact
Amazing Venue. CEVIN the bar owner is the sweetest man. Must check out Sunday night Toledo Diamond show!
SAW Madam D perform here live. THE BAND WAS FABULOUS. DRINKS FABULOUS, AND TACOS OUT BACK KEPT ME COMING BACK FOR MORE. Thanks Harvelles.....
Nice club, decent drinks good crowd a little on the older side when we went to see Delgado Brothers. The band was good though :-)
It’s a really fun place to enjoy live music.
Amazing bar and great live music. The owners are really great also.
I love this place. They have some great blues musicians that come through. Apparently the ownership changed, or at least some of them. So well see if they make changes.
Toledo Show. Nothing else to be said.
Nice place that rocks some goodBlues from time to time. Caught a nice gig Josh Smith band tonight. Usually a $10 cover.
Incredible atmosphere, incredible music and dancing!Harvells has Burlesque dancing!A young crowd of all kinds of great people!
Very cool and interesting live performances from everything like jazz to several types of burlesque and beyond. Its wonderful little gem
Great place great music great everything
On vacation from the Birdhouse in Golden BC. Was happy to find Harvelles and get to see Cabarat night. Incredible show, and a great atmosphere
Visited this place yesterday. Good fun.Bargain and got in for $5. Drinks are not costly. Great dancers. Safe place
Dropped into this little jazz bar for a few drinks. A cool vibe just sitting at the bar.
I dont wanna say that the bartenders are racist...but I stood there and they served everybody but me... once they heard that I wanted to buy drinks for 8 people then they were attentive....not cool.
An original Sunday night experience. This is definitely a vibe; that is for sure. We had a great time. Superb entertainment!
Great music on Monday nights. Musicians are welcome to jam
Tough place to find a seat, and you cant really stand around since they have shows going on. Also the price ($15) is a bit too much just to get in and attempt to buy a drink.
Popped in randomly and was very pleasently surprised. Great atmosphere and the live music was awesome. Enjoy
Excellent music venue close to Marina.
Great place! Loved the atmosphere and the live music :) Looking forward to going back.
Good music. But a little tight in space if you get there late
My wife and I had a GREAT time!! The burlesque dancers were amazing.
One of the better places to get a drink in Santa Monica, it has a dive bar feel with no pretentious vibe.
Good service, reasonable prices, but the band took a lot of time to start, very good though. We had a great time.
Cant say enough about this Historic place where Great musicians play every type of music and u can Dance!!!!
Always a great time! Great music! Great bartender! This place rocks.
This place is ok but doesn’t deserve their bouncer; he’s awesome and business minded.
Fun place if you like it loud. Great live music with a dance floor.
Sunday night the live show was amazing! Funky band and good dancers
Cool place! We really enjoyed it at our stay at LA. The jamming session on Monday was awesome.
Very nice place, kind of small but fun
What an awesome space. Great shows, great drinks, safe space and friendly people. And dancing!
