Laura H did such a wonderful job!! I’ve been to the Aveda Institute several times since moving to Lansing and never had a *bad* experience, but I have genuinely never been as impressed with a student stylist as I was with Laura!! She made my hair look better than I could have imagined. I have thick Asian hair which can be challenging for a majority of stylists and she did SUCH a good job. She was friendly but not overly chatty which was so nice for me, being at the end of a very long day. I will definitely be coming back to her!
Izabel did such a wonderful job getting what I wanted when I wasn’t sure how I wanted my hair to be cut. She was so kind and patient. My hair turned out perfectly, she got every layer I wanted :)
I was at this location getting my hair done for 5 1/2 hours! Constance was absolutely wonderful and did SUCH a good job, I went in to get my entire head dyed green and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Not to mention everyone there was super friendly and nice enough to stay late and help Constance with my hair. I love how it turned out 🤩
I have never been one to have a consistent hairdresser, so I love coming here and having a different student service me each time. I’ve yet to be disappointed by any service, and I’ve come for trims, drastic haircuts, colors, bleaching, etc. My most recent service was fantastic - I unfortunately do not remember the name of my hairdresser but she saw me at 12:30 on 6/20. She did a phenomenal job with my hair despite me cutting it myself (very poorly). I was hoping for just a fix of what I had done and some bleaching, but she asked what I was going for initially and recreated it perfectly. This is not so much a review of Douglas J., but a general shoutout to my hairdresser. I wish I could remember her name to give her proper credit. You rock, thanks for sitting with me for 6 hours, and congrats on your well-deserved upcoming graduation!
I had the hairstylist Gabriella S. Let me just say she did an absolutely amazing job! When we went in they weren’t even doing hair cuts, but she confidently said she could do my hair. She did amazing! She got every layer I wanted. She just did the absolute best job and I couldn’t imagine it looking better!

I was so excited to finally get my hair color. My appointment was at 5pm but I didn’t leave the place by 9:15pm and that’s without getting a blow dry, since I had to a family emergency and couldn’t wait another 40 minutes. I paid and left they scheduled me for tomorrow to add more toner to make it look darker. When I finally dry my hair at home, I couldn’t stop crying… it looks so bad I called to speak with a manager, she was rude and not acknowledging what I was trying to explain she said she can only have me come in tomorrow and have someone else try to fix it. I don’t want to damage my hair again! I’m so disappointed and sad about my experience because I been coming to Douglas j Aveda for the last 2 years and was very happy with the service and the people. I will never trust them with my hair ever again.
I needed a hair cut, went to Douglas J., and was randomly assigned Hayley Lea — and I will *definitely* request to have her next time I’m in town!She was incredibly patient, a careful listener, and very flexible. I usually hate getting my hair cut because I often feel like the person doing my hair has their own vision of what would look good and loses sight of my initial request. Hayley was a very good communicator and I never felt like I wasn’t in control :). I 100% recommend requesting her for your appointment!(In the picture below, she gave me a trim and short layer, along with a wavy/curly blowout)
Did 90 min aromatherapy massage and Amanda G did a very good job! I would definitely come back and sched another massage with her. The room ambiance , stars projector and music add to the perfect relaxation I was looking for!
Recently went in for my haircut with a student named Ariana, she was very nice, lovely to talk to, and the haircut looks awesome! It was exactly how I wanted it. I feel ready for my first day now 😁😁
I had a Balayage done yesterday with Cynthia and I absolutely love it! Cynthia did an amazing job matching my reference photo and listening to what I wanted it to look like. It turned out exactly how I wanted it! This place was also very nice and clean. I was offered tea and water and I got a student discount! Definitely recommend this place! I’m absolutely in love with my hair!
I have had many satisfactory haircuts and conditioning treatments in the past but after a recent color appointment I will not be back. I went in for low lights, bringing multiple reference photos of what I wanted, some of even my own hair after previous colorings. I even told them what I didn’t want. (I asked for more hidden low lights and less surface area color) I fully understand these are students - but the student working on my hair was clearly uncomfortable with the process. She asked the instructor to stay and show her what to do. The instructor did one foil and left her on her own. The student left multiple times to seek additional help but an instructor never came. At one point she asked other students for advice/ help. At my final check in the instructor that came was not even the original who did my check in. My hair turned out completely orange. Brassy, pumpkin orange. The color was spotty and the surface layer of my hair was 100% colored. Exactly what I did not want. They did offer a redo appointment but they were so booked that the earliest they could get me in (after 4 pm) was 6 days later. Cue the tears. At check out the receptionist said “ooh! pumpkin spice latte!” In reference to my hair color. She asked to run my card for the full $90 and I declined. I offered to pay for products used but I absolutely could not justify the $90 with this outcome and lack of understanding when trying to get it corrected in a timely fashion. After a lot of back and forth she finally offered me 20% off for the inconvenience. Never in my life have I left ANY service appointment with refusing to pay, but they did not care about the horrific result of my appointment. Ive never been more disappointed. I had to correct my hair ASAP as I could not go to work looking like the mad hatter. This is not a reflection of the institute as a whole, I have had positive experiences in the past but the instructors really need to step it up and support their students. She never should have been given a color appointment if she was not confident or comfortable preforming the task.
I would like to start with the understanding that this is a school, and that these men and women are learning. I am sure that depending on the stage in the program the student is at it may reflect in the quality of the cut: That said, Luis Jimenez at just 5 months into his program did an outstanding job. This is a fine young man with a good head on his shoulders.Aveda should be proud of this young man going through their program, and I hope to use his services again before he completes his program.Definitely worth trying out their services.
I really enjoyed a great experience both times I’ve visited this location. The staff and hair Stylists are incredibly helpful, kind and talented. Makayla and “Api” are tremendously talented and knew exactly how to give me that 90’s vibe haircut and style. I’m happy to say that I’ll be a return customer from here on out. 💇🏻♀️
I had a great experience here. I was warmly greeted upon arrival. My provider, Kora V., was so sweet and knowledgeable. I had a scalp massage, wash and blow out. Very relaxing! Highly recommend.
I been a customer for more than 20 years coming here and this was the first time I was actually very disappointed that my haircut today.Please don’t give me wrong wrong. I know there are students and they are learning and I’m very Aware of that but I showed a picture to her before she started cutting and she seems like she know what she was doing.But … Before I can say anything, she chopped it away, and I couldn’t see how much she was chopping because my chair was not facing the mirror.I explained I was not happy with my haircut ( I was in tears) and instructor came and said well I can’t put the hair back is already been cut !! Your hair just have to grow back again & she keep repeatedly saying it looks very cute seriously, it was not!!!The student felt bad she apologize, but the instructor did not make anything better about the situation like I said I’ve been coming here for 20 years and never received a service like this before. I was very disappointed.And making things worse this was my Mother’s Day treat myself haircut so happy Mother’s Day to me !!! 😡
I was apprehensive to get my hair done by students at first because like a lot of people, my hair is important to me and its a lot of my identity. I decided to take the plunge because Ive wanted this hair cut and style for a while.I got a mullet with red coloring around the perimeter.My stylist was Ryan Garbe and they did a fantastic job. They made sure to check in with the supervisor every crucial step of the way. Ryan was really confident in their abilities with cutting and coloring hair. I was especially nervous because black hair to red is a tumultuous process but Ryan handled it so well. They were super conversational, charming, and amazing at the job. I will 100% go back and ask for Ryan any time I need to get my hair done and Ive already referred some of my friends to them already!The price was so cheap compared to other places and the level of services was at the same level and even higher to be honest than other salons. Melody B. My daughter who resides in Ann Arbor, decided to treat me, her mother, who resides in Okemos, to a service at Douglas Js Institute in East Lansing. She chose the stress -massage package for us. I had Melody B. I was so very pleased and delighted with Melodys skill and professionalism. That said, I had forgotten she was a student. In need of the stress relief pkg., I came away relieved, relaxed, refreshed and my face felt wonderful weeks later. Thank you Melody! Youre doing great!
The place in general is nice, all employees very polite but the WASHING part of the service is absolutely poor. I’ve been there to trim my hair 4 times so far and all the times I wish they washed my hair better. I work out everyday, so I need a good wash in my hair always. The washing took less than 5 seconds and I’m not even exaggerating. She put the shampoo, scrubbed for 5 second and that was it. When did they stop teaching that you gotta wash the hair in section, specially in the lower part of the head? I was very disappointed because i knew when it was done my hair would still feel dirty and I was right, still feels like I haven’t washed it in 2 days. It’s upsetting cause the wash is part of the service and I got home and needed to wash it again.
I am a former student at Douglas J Aveda and I have to say I am very disappointed with the way they deal with their students. When we were students there we were expected to work so hard for them for free, and we did. After I graduated, people from the school are not responsive to emails or calls. On top of that when I try to find someone (seriously anyone) to give me an answer or at least tell me who to talk to, people are so condescending and unwilling to help. I can’t believe how unhelpful they are after they charge so much for their program and make students work so much. Very disappointed.
Got a haircut with Rachel K. recently, and absolutely loved the experience! They were a kind person and did thorough work, since this is a student salon, I loved that Rachel always made sure to ask questions before they continued to make sure they were going about it the right way. I got to be their first short hair cut, and I am so happy with how it turned out!
I believe I had Bri(anna), I’m bad with names I’m sorry. But she was so sweet and gave me THE haircut I wanted. While was her first time doing this style cut, she jumped in and killed it. Wasn’t afraid to ask me or her manager questions which I respect and I’m just really so pleased with the outcome. Thank you so much love, keep rocking it. I hope your travel dreams come true!!
Everything about my visit exceeded my expectations! I love that I was able to book my haircut online. When I arrived I was immediately greeted and checked in. Within a couple minutes my stylist (Maddie) introduced herself and walked me back to her chair. She was friendly, professional, and did a great job cutting my hair. Her instructor came over to give instructions for the long layers I requested and he made sure everything was perfect before I left! I just moved to the area and the Aveda Institute will definitely be my go-to salon!
Got my hair cut here and they did a terrible job. Basically was an uneven hack job. I know they are students, but the student didn’t even do my hair, the instructor did most of the cut for the student. It seemed like maybe the instructor had too many students to keep track of, too, because she didn’t even come back to do a final check on my hair. I’ve gone to the Aveda Institute in Grand Rapids many times and never had any issues there, but I’ll never go back to this place. I had to go to another salon the next day and have someone fix what they did to my hair.
I went to the school for a full head of highlights. I had the best experience with Destany S. She was professional, fun, and did an amazing job!! I love my hair and I have never loved my hair!! It’s beautiful. My daughter will be coming back this coming week and requesting an appointment with Destany specifically. I hope she stays close when she graduates because great stylists are hard to find!! 😍
Terrible experience! They had me wait 30 minutes after taking my coat before realizing nobody checked me in and they canceled my appointment. Then they apologized and got someone to cover the appointment just to be extremely rushed. The instructor spent little to no time with the student explaining what needed to be done. There was a lot of confusion between instructors and student. They turned my hair orange and did significant damage to it. I then went back to get it “fixed” and within a week it was orange again. They refused to actually fix their mess up and instead covered it up for less than a week before it was back to orange. Extremely disappointed in the service and the product.
I had a 90minute facial at Douglas J Aveda done By Emily C. and it was absolutely fantastic. The room was very clean and calming and had the perfect energy. Emily did a quick evaluation of my skin and focus points for the facial. She customized everything fitting perfectly for my sensitive skin. The whole process was so refreshing and calming and afterwards my skin was GLOWING. I don’t think my face has ever been so hydrated and soft before. She made sure to go over a good skin care routine i should follow and even helped with recommending products. I will definitely be back!!

Recently had my hair cut by Aubree. She seemed very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I really appreciated that she kept me informed on what she was happening the entire time, and was always checking in make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. The haircut was very affordable and turned out pretty good. Would definitely come here again!
A simple haircut (one inch off, no layers) took over an hour and at least 3 inches were taken off instead. Student didnt talk about products she was using and ended up using so much that I couldnt even run my fingers through my hair at the end and had to wash it again once I got home. The instructor checked it by glancing at it and walking off. Got home and realized it was very uneven.
I had a stress relieving treatment done by Skylar and she was very professional and had good pressure on the light massage. I was relaxed almost falling asleep. The room was clean and made me feel very comfortable. The warm towels topped the cake! Hope to follow her when she graduates and moves on. Thanks for the experience.
Ella did an amazing job on my hair! She cut over four inches off and did an excellent job incorporating my existing highlights into the new color that I was looking for. Her educator checked in multiple times throughout the process, and Ella made sure to ask her questions when she wasn’t sure what to do. This is one of my favorite highlights that I have ever gotten. I will definitely be back.
I have gone to Jordan P. Twice and I don’t ever want to go to someone else! My hair always looks exactly how I want it. I got referred to Douglas J by a good friend of mine. I didnt know what to expect walking in there. As soon as I walked in I was greeted. Was shown how to sign in and said a student would be right with me.Thats when I met Madalyn F. Such a young vibrant person. She comes up to me and introduces herself and sat me down in her chair. She proceeds to ask me what I would like done today, so I show her a picture. Long story short, Madalyn exceeded my expectations. She did such a brilliant and amazing job on my hair. She brought the picture to life and its just so stunning. Im so incredibly happy to have met Madalyn. She graduates in April. So if anyone needs to book an appointment. I HIGHLY recommend her!
I should have read the other reviews. I am now another unhappy customer with orange hair! I went in for partial highlights with a request for sun-kissed sections. After 4.5 hours in the chair, I have an orange top half. The educator and student offered to make it right and I made another appointment. However, the front desk staff was rude. They berated me for inquiring about the prices especially since I had hair that I didn’t like. They scolded me for “embarrassing” the student. How it is embarrassing when the student asked me if I liked it and then offered to fix it? In that moment, I was hangry, frustrated and overall disappointed. So I cancelled my future appointment and will not be returning. What a waste of time and money!! I now have to go elsewhere to get my hair fixed.
I’ve tried a few of their services that they offer. It’s been a hit or miss.Haircut 2/5. Was below average but that could be my hair type. Not many people can cut my hair properly. Took a very long time. Styling was nice. Friendly staff and they did try to get the cut I wanted even if it didn’t end up looking the best.Facials 5/5. I’ve gotten a facial which was my favorite experience. It was so relaxing that I almost fell asleep. They talked through every step they were doing and explained things about my skin. Gave tips about skin care.Pedicures 0/5. Honestly this was the worst pedicure I’ve gotten. The painting job was terrible (see attached pic). Filing was a mere graze over each nail. Cuticles were barely pushed back. The foot massage was just a gentle touch at best. Did not massage legs. Exfoliating cream was dabbed on but not rubbed to actually exfoliate. The girl almost forgot the lotion. Left with cotton between toes as cotton pads were used as toe separators (you can see cotton fibers in the pics). Top coat nail polish did not cover all the nail of each nail. Nothing was explained as to what she was using or doing. There were many awkward pauses and silences. No educator approached me for feedback like with the facial service.I know the services are done by students and they are still learning and practicing but the people lack professionalism. Sometimes the students were using inappropriate language and were on their phone at inappropriate times. I did not get to talk to an educator about the experience with each service. The atmosphere was comfortable and calming. Staff is generally really friendly and welcoming. And the price is lower than most salons. Overall, it’s a hit or miss. More misses than hits unfortunately.
Did my hair just now with a fantastic student. Colored, cut, gently massaged and detangled my hair with care that almost made me fall asleep (I did sleep a little bit not going to lie) and the best part is: the price! Everybody is super nice and if you are afraid of the hairstylist being a student (don’t be, they do an amazing job) there’s a supervisor/professional that oversees the work. Booked the appointment the same exact day and let’s just say I don’t regret it.
I didnt want to review from only one experience and wanted to give an overall feel after a series.The facial: definitely nice and never a let down. It does have its quirks to have a student, but nothing serious.Haircuts: The haircuts is where it gets dicey. Ive had both really good and bad experiences. And the thing is, once a student chops off more than you initially said, its too late. Theres no undoing the hair that was chopped. And this is mainly with my bangs which Ive had students bring their instructors when nervous, but the latest student just chopped away. To the point where my bangs are uneven and the two side lengths that I had to frame my face are just gone and looks funky. I tried to be forgiving that itll just settle after a few days, but my hair is just going in choppy looking.Truly a hit or miss when it comes to hair cuts.Special Occasion Styling: I had a pretty good student who was talkative and made sure to consult with her instructor when she became unsure. Truly had a beautiful outcome and wouldnt mind having her again.Stay tuned, the next service Im trying is the massage.
I was able to book a next-day appointment and was greeted with friendly service the moment I walked in! I was looking for a dramatic haircut from my typical long hair to short. I was paired with Lisa M, and my experience with Lisa was amazing. She was super friendly and walked me through every step she was taking with my hair. I will say, though, tell the educators what you want to be done. The educators definitely can get busy with all the clients and students. Once Lisa had finished my cut, an educator came over and chopped a bit more off my hair than I preferred, but still, overall, the service was terrific. Everyone is super welcoming and cares about the service you receive.
The main idea of this review is that the institute needs to make sure their students are comfortable cutting curly and/or textured hair. As a client I recommend speaking up as the cut goes on, having patience as it is a student, and if you are unsure or the student seems unsure, requesting an instructor.I came in knowing it is a school, but I only needed a trim and being new in town it seemed convenient. The front desk staff was incredibly friendly upon arrival and were diligent about asking for and receiving feedback upon checkout. My haircut ended up being satisfactory, but it was clear that the student got to a point with my curly hair that she was unsure how to treat it. I appreciated that she did not start hacking away and was careful enough to ask an instructor for help, but when trying to explain what I needed she said I dont want to leave you with too much volume. To which I replied, I have curly hair. I want volume. Thats kind of the point. I even pointed to a picture on the wall of a model with voluminous curly hair as an example. I will note that an instructor walked by early in the cut and gave my stylist a note on technique, which was nice to see. When it came to her attempt at styling it, it was clear she was not used to my style hair or hadnt dealt with it much before. The appointment begins with an instructor hearing what the client wants before the stylist takes over performing the service. I would have appreciated the instructor acknowledging the texture of my hair with the student before the cut because it is not the same as cutting untextured hair. I also would have liked to be asked questions about how I normally style it, i.e do I wear it curly, how do I like to part it, do I straighten it often, etc., as all these things effect the final product. The hair stylist was quiet, which is I dont mind, but I didnt feel like she made much of an effort to connect with me. I would go back, but will definitely be clear about my needs and ask the stylist and instructor about their method and comfort level for cutting hair like mine. I hope this review is helpful for others coming in for a haircut.
I always have a great experience getting my hair cut at Aveda, but I had exceptionally great service from Maribel yesterday. Maribel made me feel like a star! She was so sweet and went into detail with describing every product she was using and the method shed take for my haircut. When I just asked for a trim, she made sure I knew how much she would cut and what details I still wanted with my hair. She is so thoughtful and attentive - I cannot recommend her enough. She also made sure to remind the cashier that I was a student upon checkout, which made my haircut free. Aveda has been generous enough to continue offering free haircuts to MSU students in light of recent events, which is something I greatly appreciated. I love getting my hair cut here and will definitely return soon!!
Very soothing and calming facial I got from this Salon by sweet Megan. It was my first time and I almost fell asleep, it was that good. Very clean, great ambiance and friendly people. The price was super reasonable. Overall I loved it.The only cons is that I usually get deep cleanse of the open pores in my face during a facial, where they physically clear the pores with a tool, especially near the ala region of the nose. Unfortunately that step wasn’t there in the routine here. I could still see black spots near the ala of my nose after I came home. However they did use a scrub to exfoliate. Overall it was very soothing!! Felt very relaxed.
Today Dustin cut my hair and i absolutely love it! He did everything I asked for and is very good at making conversation! Thank you so much Dustin, I wish you well on your journey:)
I had the great privilege of having my hair cut and styled by Ms Sierra Pearson, a student at the Douglas J Aveda Institute. This was my first time having my haircut at this or any school and I was a bit hesitant. Ms Pearson, the Aveda staff, and her instructor immediately put me at ease. They explained the process completely and Ms Pearson and her instructor checked in with each other and me throughout the session. Ms Pearson is a brilliant conversationalist and was completely comfortable working with me (despite our differences in age and backgrounds). The haircut was perfect and the experience was amazing. While I don’t live in the area, I would gladly return if I was in the area for any service they offer. I know Sierra will be a success wherever she goes after graduation. This experience completely exceeded my expectations. Thank you!

It was very nicely done. all the staff, students involved very well behaved with safety concerns of all entering this place, also very courteous and professional. A great facility to visit and get pampered. Ands its Local , a + point for me. I really like this place and services it provides. Love it.My hairstylist was not sure about my request about my haircut, even though she was about graduate in 9 days , lacked confidence and has to seek help from her trainer several times. Walking in the door I felt welcome right away, was checked in and immediately asked if I would like some tea or water. I do feel that the drinks should be served in bottles rather than a coffee mug, but not a deal breaker. After a few moments my stylist, Marisa called my name. She was very sweet and understood exactly what I wanted. Friendly conversation which is huge for me! She was getting to know me and I her. Great relationship to key to for me! Marisa made sure I was completely satisfied with my cut and length. I most definitely will be back to see Marisa!

Lily Snyder did an amazing job on my hair. She was very sweet and personable. I ended up going lighter with my hair than I’ve had it before and I absolutely love it. She gave me great tips on how to keep my hair blonde for as long as possible. It was a very long process because I have very thick hair but the whole time she was so nice!

I went in for a bang trim yesterday and received service by Kaylee, she was super sweet, but she gave me pretty much a hack job. i liked them initially, but after looking at them more myself and getting other opinions, this is the worst haircut ive ever gotten. usually these trims are straightforward and easy, and she did a good job up until she asked me if i wanted “a little wisp” in my bangs. ive had wispy bangs before and enjoyed how they looked, so i agreed, but for some reason she then proceeded to take an extra inch off of my bangs without informing me they would be shorter. i wanted my bangs to rest at just above my eyebrows, they now rest halfway up my forehead, and they are uneven. they don’t cooperate when i try to style them how i like my bangs to be styled cuz they are too short and uneven. i usually give the benefit of the doubt because these people are students, but after this experience im not sure i will be returning again.
My first time visiting here. Mistakes happen but they give their MAXIMUM effort to correct it. I got my highlights done from a very sweet girl but I felt bad to tell I wasn’t satisfied with that as she put so much effort into it. However, I absolutely fell in love with the way how Cynthia re-did my highlights. She paid attention to small details of my hair and now I can’t stop looking at my hair 🫶🫶🫶! Called to make an appointment for a haircut. The woman on the phone was very short with me. Every answer was abrupt and monotone. I asked to speak to a manager and to my surprise she said she was the manager! I suggested she may be a little more friendly on the phone. She stated thats just the way I talk, Im not meaning to be rude . I decided to seek services elsewhere. Cant recall a time I have spoken to someone in the service industry that was so unwelcoming.
The experience I had was incredible! The building is very nice, its clean and well-kept, and all of the products they use work and smell so good! Ashlyn W did my hair, and I was incredibly happy with her! She was very nice and sweet, and she took the time to make sure the layers cut in my thick, long hair were absolutely perfect! 6/14/23. I have my first experience with Douglas J yesterday. Right from the start it was a great experience. The staff was friendly and I was offered water and tea before my session. The experience with the facial was quite nice. A little too much time out of the room gathering supplies. My friend and I both had the same service but hers took 30 minutes more and included hands and feet.Last comment, clean the ceilings above the spa beds.
I’ve gone to Douglas J a couple times, and both experiences have been great! I got an all over color from Morgan A, and the color was very even and natural. People are always surprised to hear it’s dyed! She was very patient and kind (especially as the appointment went on a little late). I just got a major chop of about 6-8 inches from Siah H. She was very professional, and did exactly as I asked. I’ve been super happy with it so far, it’s looking healthy!
I got a haircut here today and it came out absolutely amazing! Peyton did a wonderful job and Im so happy with the results. She made sure to check in with me all along the process and make sure I was happy with the length. Also the educators are there double checking everything and seem to be very supportive of the students. Overall it was a nice atmosphere. Also, its very affordable for the services offered! I will definitely return in the future.

I’m so grateful that I was assigned to Paedyn for a color touch up! She did an amazing job matching my color and covering my roots. This was not an easy task, as I have both highlights/lowlights. It honestly looks like my regular Aveda stylist did it! If you book an appointment, ask for Paedyn! Well , i have been going to Douglas j with my girls for almost a year . I have always had a very good experience ( Rachel , Kate. Etc.. ) but this last time I had a bad experience unfortunately:( I wanted a partial highlight with cut .I carefully selected a person with good reviews… ( she is graduated since) but unfortunately I think she left on the bleach too long on my hair and as of right now, It is just breaking up very rapidly:( , also almost my whole hair is blonde which I didn’t want either . First I wasn’t realizing what was happened and was ok with result .. but now I’m not sure if I would need to get my hair off because of this. :( very sad 😞
This place was amazing! Prices are so good and the students absolutely know what they are doing. Been getting my hair done for 8 years and this was my best experience. They are very welcoming and had some great conversations with me to make the time go by. Katie Davis did my hair and did an amazing job, even made a toner on the spot. Helena was fantastic!! I have had two appointments with her, and both times she was professional and took the time to listen to what I wanted. I asked for a slight ‘tweak’ for my color on my second visit and she nailed it! Very happy and will be scheduling with Helena again very soon!
I really love this salon and the tea service too. Kelsey is a very hard-working girl and leave no gray hairs nothing in my hair roots. I like her partial high lights too. The professors are very kind and compassionate and caring. 5/5 for this salon. I would highly recommend going ig here.

Arrived early for my 6:30pm haircut appointment (received text/email confirmation from them). By 7pm stylist still didn’t show so I went home. Maybe go somewhere else if you actually want service.
I very much enjoyed my experience at this salon. The atmosphere was so clean and professional you wouldnt realize it was a school. My stylist Allison Davis was very calm and professional. I got a facial from her and during my treatment, she explained everything she was doing in a calm voice that helped me relax and enjoy the experience. They set the mood with the dimming lights, soft instrumental music and the aromatherapy. The value of what I paid for what I got was very good. Definitely recommend them.

I went in for a haircut and an eyebrow wax. I had Austin and he was amazing! He did such a great job fixing up my curtain bangs and giving me round layers. Also a great job on my eyebrows. I have had some bad experiences in the past at salons, but Austin was so great! He made me feel very comfortable and also had great suggestions for me. In total with student discount I only paid $24! Amazing service and great price. I will definitely be coming back.
My stylist was Peyton and I just got a haircut.I have worn my hair in a pixie for about 4 years. I had a not so great cut about 3 months ago at a different salon. It seemed like the best option for me world be to let it grow out longer than usual and go somewhere nicer to get it fixed. The styles are students here and it took much longer than I expected. She called in help when she felt she needed it and I think I got a great cut. Im very happy with the results and Ill be back in a few months when I need a trim.

I really appreciated she made sure not to take off too much & offered suggestions on face framing/layers based what would look best on me! I love going here! In the past I have gone for hair treatments and have no complaints! The prenatal massage there was EXCELLENT and Friday I was lucky enough to schedule a last minute waxing appointment. My technician Kayla was amazing super nice and thorough. Her instructor was so professional helpful and sweet AND they were very accommodating! Keep in mind this is a school so plan to use up all your time and maybe even more, but they really are so nice there the extra time it takes is worth it!

I am still in awe of how well Nicole Brandemihl colored my hair. I actually prefer how she did it to how my old stylist I had for years colored it! Nicole was so patient and kind as I had trouble putting into words the outcome I was looking for. She asked the right questions and really LISTENED because I got exactly what I wanted. She knew that I came in with not a whole lot of time, but she still did not rush the process. She had the perfect mix of being professional and very easy and fun to talk to. I had to run out with wet hair due to my time constraint, and I thought it looked pretty good and I was happy about it, but when I got home and was able to dry it properly, I was truly amazed at how well it turned out! Sophia Brooks was absolutely phenomenal! I went in for a haircut and left feeling my best! Not only was she so sweet but she made me feel like I was in good hands and had the best conversation with her during my appointment! Additionally, the instructors I encountered were amazing as well!
My stylist was really nice and did an okay job, but the haircut took over 3 hours long for a basic trim, layering, and face framing pieces. If the instructors could help the students throughout the haircut and be readily available, that would have made the process a lot better and faster. The entire salon seemed to have many things going on at once with only 1 instructor to assist the many students that had questions. I understand there may not be a lot of staff to keep up with the appointments and students needs, but 3 hours was way too long to be sitting in a salon and not knowing when I would be able to finally leave.
I have always had amazing experiences at Aveda until most recently this past weekend. My hair stylist was amazing this past time, but there is a blonde manager at the front desk currently who is so rude and unwelcoming. Made my visit really unpleasant and was straight up mean to me when there was a miscommunication on THEIR part. They decided to change my appointment from a “color redo” (no payment required) to a normal appointment without explicitly telling me. Most frustrating is I went in the day before and confirmed with this blonde manager that it was in fact a color redo and didn’t require payment. The next day upon checkout she told me I was wrong and lied saying I had been notified of the change before my appointment. She was extremely rude during this conversation while I was asking questions to try and understand why they pulled the rug from under me. IF I return, I will actively request to not speak with her. Wish I got her name but if you’ve been recently, you’ll know who she is… never offers water or tea or to take your coat like all the other front desk team.
I dont get haircuts often and finally decided to try something new here. Got a haircut with Hannah M. and am loving how it is looking even a few weeks after the cut. The conversation was friendly but I am a relatively quiet person and that was respected, which I appreciate. Hannah was not afraid to ask her supervisors for advice and I admire that. The appointment was fairly quick and easy going. Id get another cut here and wish Hannah the best of luck in her studies.
I booked with Ashley A and she was amazing. We ran into a hiccup during the service and she spent ample time and effort into making sure I loved my results! 10/10 recommend!
Was blown away by how nice it was! All of the girls were extremely helpful and sweet, it was a very welcoming environment. I got a gorgeous cut, color, and style for under $70! These girls may be students, but the atmosphere and services are nothing short of professional.
I’ve loved all of my visits to Douglas J, but my last visit had me leaving very disappointed. My stylist was 15 minutes late which is normally not a big deal as we all run late, but stated since she was late could she skip the wash to save time. I agreed because I had never been asked before to skip a wash and felt as if she did not want to do it. She asked what I was in for. I let her know a trim to get rid of split ends and asked to add some more layers as they had grown out. She didn’t clarify or ask any questions for specifics or details. Upon leaving, there were many split ends still and no new layers. Ultimately, for hair that is past my shoulders, I was in the chair for no more than 15 minutes. A very disappointing experience after so many wonderful visits with other stylists.
I love getting services done here - they’re very affordable and the students who do your service are always very well trained! I’ve gotten haircuts, facials, and waxing done and it has been professional level and I’ve left happy every time! Save some money and yelp a student out by going to an Aveda training school for your beauty services!

I came in for a facial with Cristina F. today and it was AMAZING! The last facial I got in the past from a different place was not very memorable, but this was a great experience and I will definitely be returning in the future. Cristina made sure that each part of the facial was enjoyable. 11/10!
I have had a wonderful experience every time I visit! The environment is very clean and professional! The students work extremely hard to make sure the results are of great quality and perfect. Liliana Brown, a student, has done my hair multiple times and each time it turns out amazing, I wont see any other hair stylist now!! She is the only hair stylist I have ever been to that has been able to match my own hair to my dream images!! Liliana has great talent when it comes to color!! I have not been disappointed once! She took my naturally dark hair and worked it to a nice ashy blonde and then platinum!! The results are honestly breath-taking every single time! Her determination is evident within her dedication to her work, I will for sure continue to visit!!
I came here for a haircut and relaxing experience, and am happy with my cut and my stylist was great.However, it was very frustrating that my stylist kept getting interrupted by one of her peers, who appeared to be taking a quiz or test...and kept asking my stylist for help. It was distracting and became quite annoying after a while. It wasnt my stylists fault; her peer literally kept asking her for help with her studying and it became weird after a while.
Update 12/28/2022So happy to get a haricut from Rachel R.! She is patient, explains every step shes doing with my hair, and makes sure I am satisfied with the result. Beyond that, her welcoming attitude is the cherry on top. Would highly recommend getting a haircut from her!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I will either not go to this place again or never choose the same stylist.I had a haircut, and the “stress-relieving scalp and shoulder ritual” shown on the website when booking for a haircut service is such a huge lie. All I got was shampoo “wiped” on my hair (yes, not even massaged) then washed away. No shoulder ritual at all. Also, the stylist didn’t discuss my needs with me in details. She literally just cut my hair short, no layers or any techniques here. She didn’t explain what products were used until I asked her to do so. Thank God the result is acceptable is all I can say.
I had my hair cut and colored by a student stylist named Jasmine. She was EXCELLENT in every way!! I left the salon feeling beautiful, stylish, well taken care of and all well under my spending budget!! She did everything exactly as I had requested and then some!! I wish I couldve tipped her, she did such an outstanding job!I will definitely visit again soon! Thank you so, so much Jasmine for everything you did!❤
Took my daughter for a birthday spoil. Facial and a haircut make you feel like new.Went and had my hair done today, 5/13/23. Quinn Springsteen was my stylist. She did a fantastic job. She is only a couple months from graduation, so run, dont walk to see her.
This is literally the only place I will go to get my hair done. It’s so affordable and everyone there is so kind and talented. Today I got a cut and full head color with Allazae and she was awesome! Allazae was wonderful to talk to, she taught me things about my hair that I didn’t know, and she consistently checked in with me to make sure I was getting what I wanted. The color turned out perfect and she did a fantastic job cutting and styling my curly/wavy hair. If you go to this salon, definitely request Allazae. She’s hands down the best stylist I’ve ever had and you won’t regret it!
This was my first time visiting the Douglas J Institute and Im so glad I did! I went in for a big chop ~10-12 inches, and was hoping for someone who has worked on curly hair. My stylist, Asya P., knew what exactly my hair needed and was so professional and a pleasure to chat with the entire time. I have never had the level of care and attention given to my hair than it received today from Asya and her instructor. Im definitely going back again and feel even better having come out with a cute haircut and having helped someone learn and gain experience!

I had a fantastic experience getting my hair cut at Aveda! I had the lovely Ms.Tara Becker, and she did such a nice job. I have very thick, very curly hair that I dont usually trust just anyone to handle, but she did an awesome job trimming up my hair. She communicated everything she was doing and asked lots of questions to make sure that I got hair that I loved. As for the rest of the Aveda Institute, every person I encountered was so kind and provided wonderful service, from the front desk to the educators. Not to mention the amazing prices! I would highly recommend Douglas J Aveda, and I will definitely be going back!

I have never gone to a teaching school for a haircut before and wasnt sure what to expect. I had a great experience. The professionalism at the front desk and the smiles and kindness from all was awesome!Crystal was amazing! She took time to chat with me about what I wanted and the instructor made sure I knew the time and estimated cost and what was going to happen - so no surprises at the end. I loved my color and have gotten so many compliments. I have recommend Crystal to my friends and family already!
I moved to Lansing in May 2021 and didn’t have a anyone to cut my hair. After an annoying experience at a barbershop I decided to check out the Aveda school institute downtown. I was randomly assigned to Grace Shepherd and she was great! I loved my hair cut. It was also their annual open house so there was free tea, cookies, and a chair massage too. Grace is a delightful human being, I hope to have her cut my hair in the future, and I would recommend the Aveda school students to anyone. Better prices because they’re students. It also smells really nice here!

Katelyn Bontrager did amazing work with my hair! I came in with a reference photo, some modifications from that, and some concerns about wanting to get my hair cut just right. She pulled it all together. She offered options in technique and explained what effect they would have on the overall look. Because I asked, she took length off bit by bit, making sure I was happy with the direction before moving on to the next step. Overall, an amazing experience!
Aliya was awesome all the way around.I have very long white and silver hair that is a chore to keep up. Everything sticks to it. She gave me a great shampoo, clarifier and mask. A wonderful trim, only what was needed. With a dry and curl. My hair looks great and a lot less build up.Would definitely go back.Thank youKathleen
Best money and time Ive spent on myself in a long time. From the minute I walked in until the time I left I felt great. I experienced nothing but courtesy, professionalism and smiles all afternoon. I had a scalp massage with Dannielle and a full body massage with Angelo and was blown away by the experiences. The instructor was friendly and genuinely seemed interested in truthful feedback. If I hadnt known it was a teaching facility, I sure wouldnt have guessed it. I strongly recommend these services to anyone on the fence about it, and will be back myself, hopefully for a haircut, too.Update 2/8/20: Git a cut and thermal style with Sarah P. today. Had a wonderful cut, and left feeling great! She was very helpful, and we discussed ways to style my naturally curly hair. Looking forward to going back to see her to learn more techniques.

Got my hair done for a second time here and couldnt be happier. Ivan did a fantastic job with my ridiculously long hair, making sure he kept the length where I wanted and really taking his time. My hair looks and feels great. The staff are always friendly and they all love to touch my long hair, which is always funny to me. 😂 Will definitely keep coming back.
I most recently had my hair done by Ashley T and she did a fantastic job. She works fast but does high quality work. I got a partial balayage and she went above and beyond to make my 9 month pregnant self comfortable. She even brought me a stool to elevate my feet to help prevent the swelling I have been dealing with recently! I’ve never had a bad experience here - no matter if I got a cut, color, massage, etc.
Probably won’t be back. Went in for a Balayage today, after spending a hour waiting for the test strands to lift, was told my hair wouldn’t lighten and the instructor suggested a Malibu treatment. I agreed although my ends were pretty light to begin with and the Salon I went to a year ago had no issues bleaching my hair. After the Malibu I was left for about another 45 mins to a hour with no check in from the student or instructor. Just sat at station 8 with wet hair being completely ignored. Once the student does come back she suggests a botanical treatment in which I reply I would reschedule for tomorrow morning. Student takes me back to be rinsed as there is treatment of the Malibu still caked onto my scalp and around my hair line. Student says “ it slipped her mind rescheduling “ after the fact she adds a botanical treatment during my rinsing. She then offers a blow out when I ask her to blow dry my hair before leaving, since she did have to rinse it a second time and did end up applying botanical treatment without my knowledge. Sucks because I paid extra for a service that 1 I wanted scheduled for another day and 2. for having my hair blow dried after a treatment I didn’t want. I wish the experience could have been better.
I got a stress relieving treatment, which feels like a light full body massage. I had Jessica Campbell. She did an excellent job customizing my massage with the right amount of pressure and temperature of everything. I had the interesting idea to listen to my own relaxing music with my own headphones. She was receptive and we agreed to finish the hair and face portion of the massage before trying the headphones.I then had Beth for separate foot reflexology and scalp massage sessions. She did a wonderful job of walking me through her process and also customizing her touch and the temperature and pressure of everything.
I have gotten services at four different Aveda schools, and, being a new local, Im so happy to have this particular school pretty close by! All of the students I have had so far have done a great job and were professional but friendly. I just had a much needed aroma massage by Kelsey who will be graduating by middle of next month - highly recommend booking her if you are able! Hair services have been awesome as well!
My mom Angela went to visit Douglas J and had her hair done by a young lady named Sierra. Sierra was genuinely kind, patient and professional. Her hair was done perfectly. My mom thoroughly enjoyed Sierra doing her hair. My mom thanks Sierra for fixing her bun.
Bat did an AMAZING JOB on my hair. First time ever dying my hair, or doing anything other than a trim. I have dark brunette hair and was worried about the process. Bat was super sweet and easy going. I will definitely be back to see them in particular for any of my other hair needs. The other students and instructors I did interact with were all bubbly and positive. Such a fun atmosphere. But, Bat my girl, this purple just keeps getting better !!

Angie Jacquart has been cutting and coloring my hair for several months. The first time she colored it the color was perfect as the touch-ups have been since. I have had so many compliments on the color as well as the cut. I wear my hair short and have an awful cowlick, so we have worked with different cutting and styling strategies to control the cowlick. I determine if a cut is good not only by the way it looks at the salon appointment but, also, how it looks as it grows out and Ive always been able to style my own hair easily between appointments. So, that means to me, its a good cut. I will continue to make my appointments with her until she graduates and then, wherever she goes, I will continue to have her color and cut my hair. I had a great experience here. The head massage is awesome. My stylist did an amazing job with my haircut. I had a picture of what I wanted which was quite a big change. She displayed great confidence which made me feel good. She gave me the look I wanted and I am very happy! I will definitely be going back.
Lauren is AMAZING! She was so professional and her personality made me feel at ease like if I were having my hair done by a friend. We had a great conversation she did an amazing job on my hair! I have gotten my hair dyed twice at Douglas J, by Bree who is incredible! The last time I went in, we touched up the black and added highlights. This was back in April and I still get compliments everyday from people who say it looks like it was just done. She knows exactly what you’re looking for, even if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. I absolutely love everything she has done so far and do not have a single complaint about her. I will be scheduling another appointment at Douglas J in a couple weeks and will definitely be scheduling it with Bree and I recommend everyone doing the same!
I got a Botanical Hair Treatment because my hair was looking dry. The entire scheduling process was seamless. The student was very nice and knowledgable. However, I feel like my hair hasnt changed or improved. I did buy the damage hair remedy product she recommended so I will keep trying that, but as for the treatment, I dont recommend it.Aside from the treatment, the blow dry was not to my liking at all. It wasnt smooth and shiny instead my hair felt like I had a ton of hair product in it and was not bouncy. I would only go back for the nice staff and students.
Went in yesterday for a haircut with Nicole, and she did an amazing job!! Started with a cup of hot tea and a nice scalp massage with some Aveda oil. We had nice conversation and all the girls were super complimentary of my awesome haircut on the way out! Her instructor even complimented how nice of a haircut it was. She did a graduated bob which is not an easy style to do. I’ll definitely be back!
Extremely rude, kinda ruined my whole day. Not really into beauty stuff, but I wanted a relatively quality cut at a decent price. Scheduled a split ends trim and a bleach just for my bangs, but was on a time constraint. They were super aggressive about how all their quality stuff takes hours to pull off, but I usually bleach my bangs on my own-- its good enough for me, so I told them literally anything they could offer me in my time frame is good enough, asked if theres any option at all. The stylist then called over her manager, and both of them talked down to me and acted like I was dumb for not expecting an hour long process to trim my dead ends. They HAVE to wash hair before cutting it, so even a trim is too much. Rolled their eyes a lot. I really dont need all that to feel nice about my haircut, so I guess Im stuck with hit-or-miss great clips since Ill never be coming back here.
Dont come here if you want short hair, Mentor was very aggressive on my head and cutting in a harsh way. Seemed to be in a rush. Maybe one of the worst haircuts ive had in my life! Nothing like the picture I showed the stylist, my fade was not blended properly, Folliculitis left on my head (red streaks on scalp) due to dirty, plastic and cheap clippers, My stylist didnt even own her own pair of clippers and had to ask another person for their clippers, never comming here again.
Had such a great experience here. Andy is absolutely wonderful, kind and sweet and I am happy to have worked with her. She gave me a malibu treatment and my hair feels healthier and softer than ever before! Not to mention it removed some of the boxed color I was trying to get rid of. I am happy I took her advice, would work with her again in the future!
I always have a great visit here. As long as you communicate what you want, you will always get beautiful results. If you are looking to build a relationship with a hair dresser and make them your forever go to, this is the place to do it. 10/10 experience, I got a trim and blowout and my hairdresser was amazing! Allison Brooks was so nice and did such a good job on my hair, would definitely come here again! Only thing that I wish I could do is tip them for their amazing service!!
I had my first ever facial done with Hannah Farquharson and it was an amazing experience! Hannah did an outstanding job explaining all the products she used on me and gave me tips to try at home to keep me skin healthy. She left my face feeling more hydrated than ever and glowing! :) highly recommend.
First time in at least 10 years I let someone else touch my hair and the student (Devyn) did such an amazing job! Very thorough, did a great job explaining what they were doing, and was very confident. The teachers helping were also very nice and did a good job communicating with me and the student on the direction i wanted my hair. Will definitely be going back for future hair adventures
This was my first time at Douglas J Aveda Institute. What an awesome experience. I was welcomed right away from a gal at the front desk and it was a very friendly and professional environment. I met with Melissa Suess and had a facial. It was so relaxing and just what I needed. She is knowledgeable, friendly, gentle and made this experience wonderful. I was impressed and will be making appointments in the future.
Ive been going to the Douglas J East Lansing Institute for many years because I Iove the experience and today was no exception. The front desk attendants were warm and professional. My 1.5 hour facial with Erin was fantastic (which I got for half-off because of the products I chose to purchase at my last visit!). Austin cut and styled my curly hair with so much knowledge, passion & enthusiasm! It was a day well spent!
I just got my haircut today and my experience was THE BEST Ive ever had at a salon! I booked online and was immediately introduced to my stylist, Austin. They were so kind and knowledgable, they gave me a bunch of great tips and were exemplary at communicating with me to get my hair to BETTER than what I had in mind. Will definitely be booking another appointment with them in the future.
I recently went to Douglas J Aveda for the first time and got my haircut by Mary Hickok. Everyone was very polite and willing to help or answer questions. Mary did an amazing job on my hair and was so gentle and thoughtful the whole time. She was very easy to talk to and made sure my hair was cut and styled just the way I wanted. I will definitely be going back! High recommend!
I decided to try the Institute as I love the idea of students getting hands-on experience (plus al the great reviews!) My stylist was nice but not very talkative and after meeting with her and showing a reference pick of the coloring I wanted, she and her educator made a plan and she got to work. My color is much, much darker than what I wanted although they assured me it will fade. Okay, fine, learning experience all around. My biggest issue is that she apparently missed rinsing out some of the dye at the back hairline and I found out only after I got home and it had dyed the collar of my shirt. Upon touching the hairline, it was sticky with dye and leftover shampoo that didn’t get washed out. Three stars because I’ll likely give the Institute another try in the future, but definitely with a different stylist.
I was scheduled for an hour long facial which ended up actually being 90 minutes long. It was lovely but I kept worrying about the time because I was never made aware of the additional 30 minutes they provide for time used getting dressed, or the room set up, etc, which is nice but should be better communicated in case someone has somewhere to be afterwards. She did a lovely job though and had a fun personality that I easily clicked with. I would definitely go back but just would ensure the amount of time I need to plan on being there. My skin does look awesome today!!!
My experience today was almost perfect. My esthetician, Emily, was wonderful! My facial was fabulous and I am very happy with my service. No complaints only praise. Emily was kind, informative and thorough. She will do well after she graduates. Congratulations!My complaint is with guest services. In the past, and I have had many services there, the front desk was excellent. Not this time. I have two complaints. First, I had to cancel last week and called to do so. I had to leave a message. When I followed up to make sure my message was received, I was told don’t worry, you won’t be charged for your no show. That was not my concern. I rarely cancel and I wanted the student to know that. To know I wasn’t a no show. I called. The receptionist was clipped in her response. Impatient. Rude.Next, today the person who greeted me was arrogant and not at all interested in waiting on me. Then she made an error and was again impatient and even rude when I pointed it out.I am glad I won’t be returning for a while. When I do, you will most likely have a new and hopefully better trained group of receptionists.
Just had one of the most amazing facials from Alexis Allen, a Douglas J student! Ugh, it was heaven!!! She walked me through all the steps she was doing and was so knowledgeable. Answered all my questions and made me feel understood. It was a dream!
I have a wonderful experience every time I come here. I can always trust that the student doing my hair is knowledgable and talented. The staff is very kind and accommodating. The prices of services are so good - it feels like a steal! I always walk out of the institute satisfied and feeling great. This is my go-to salon.
The students are nice and do a good job, but the instructors have no respect for the students and go as far as to verbally assault them in front of the clients. All educators this day were in a bad mood and clearly taking it out on the students.
I had Haley Held cut my hair and i was more than impressed by the job she had done. She made it look the best it has been in years. She deserves more credit than she gets. She was engaged the whole time, had an intriguing conversation with me during the whole cut, overall she did an amazing job! I cant wait until she gets a salon spot somewhere. I will most likely make the commute to that spot. Its not just her but most of the people there do an amazing job, from what i have seen, keep up the good work!
Had a great experience here for a haircut with one of the many talented students & her supervisor. Super friendly and welcoming environment, fun to watch busy stylists with a wide variety of clientele. I walked out with a great cut that I am completely satisfied with and will love way through summer and beyond.
I had a specialized acne facial with Melissa E.- she did such a wonderful job. Her voice is so soothing and she has the most delicate touch, the entire experience was so relaxing and the fresh glow of my skin afterwards was the best. I really appreciated the time she took to get to know my skin prior to the service and give recommendations for future services and products!
AMAZING!! I was a little nervous before coming in because I knew I wanted to get a significant amount of my hair cut, but decided to try anyways because it was only $16 for shampoo,cut, and style!! Caroline did an amazing job on my hair and made sure to confirm before she cut anything. Not only was my haircut amazing, but she was also a kind person to talk to! Great conversation and very sweet. I always get wonderful services at Douglas J. I discovered the Relaxation Therapy about two years ago and it is amazing. The students and staff are very attentive. I’m always impressed at their enthusiasm and professionalism. Once, when I had to wait a bit longer than expected for my appointment, they offered a hand and arm massage while I waited and refused to charge for my appointment. I hadn’t even complained or asked for a discount, they just offered due to their incredible customer service. They definitely have a customer for life!
Made an appointment for a birthday facial with Ellie Pierman and had an amazing experience! Was greeted right away, Ellie had everything set up and had a big birthday greeting on her mirror! She took time to learn my skin type and got products that fit! Cannot wait to go again!
I have only had amazing experiences and interactions with Aveda Institutes staff and professional stylist students. They are concerned with your satisfaction and that your hair looks exactly like you want it. Even if I am not sure what I want, they give great suggestions. Instructors are always around making sure everything is working well and my expectations are met.
Craig is amazing. The laser hair removal process is painless (can feel warm at times) fast and affordable. Highly recommend!
This is the second time I have been to the Aveda Institute and I will definitely be making it my go to hair salon.Today Surrey Fox did my full highlight, cut and brow wax. I have long hair and asked for tiny highlights so it wasn’t an easy task but she did a phenomenal job, I absolutely love it. She was very professional, talented and sweet and has a bright future ahead of her. Highly recommend!
I had Katie D. as my stylist and i loved how she understood what i wanted to do with my hair. She gave me suggestions on what would look good and how i can style my hair in the future. They were really nice and hospitable and overall i loved my experience and will be back in the future.
I went in yesterday with the plan to donate my hair and get a malibu treatment. Kaylie T did an amazing job with such a huge transformation. My hair looks so cute and feels so soft. Kaylie was professional and easy to talk to. I would definitely recommend her.
Douglas J Aveda institute is my go-to for a great haircut (mens). They are all students, so there is always SOMEWHAT of a concern for some people that their hair wont be done just the way they like it, however, their instructors check every cut before theyre complete to make sure the customer is satisfied.And for $16 (no tipping allowed) its impossible to beat.After waiting more than 45 minutes at a different salon (for an appointment Id scheduled and they ignored) I walked out and decided to try a walk-in at Aveda Institute. Id been there many times for appointments, but this was my first walk-in. As always I was cordially greeted, offered tea or water while I waited and brought back in under 3 minutes. After waiting for a scheduled appointment elsewhere for 45 this was heaven. They were a godsend yesterday. AND I added a service to my bill and still paid less than I would have at the other place. And it was worth so much more to me.Thank you Douglas J Aveda Institute team!

Ive been coming to Douglas J for trims here and there for a while, but finally tried color and my stylist did an AMAZING job. Olivia Kippe was so professional, and really took the time to listen to what I wanted – she has a real passion for transformation and getting it just right. (I requested her after a recommendation for her specifically.) My hair looks, great, and Ill definitely be back!
I wanted to say thank you to Maisey, a student who worked with me on my wedding day. Due to a last minute change, I was assigned her the day before the wedding for a free trial, as my prior stylist had become unavailable. I was very nervous having to start again only 1 day before the wedding. Brittany the bridal consultant overseeing students was very apologetic and offered a free second practice hair day. Maisey was very sweet, and this was her first bridal hair experience. She did an amazing job! I had a difficult homemade headpiece to work with, and she worked it in perfectly. She was very professional and confidant. I got many compliments on my hair, and it stayed perfect all day. Thank you so much for making me and my small bridal party feel so welcome and important at your business. Five stars!
Really spoiled myself last night! Started the night with an amazing cut/scalp massage by Erinn B. She did a great job explaining what she was going to do with my cut (which is never easy esp for new students), she was pleasant and professional. She made my visit very enjoyable.Ended my evening with a very relaxing massage from Sheldon K. He made me feel very comfortable. He took great ease when doing my foot massage as I broke my foot earlier this summer. He was professional and pleasant and a good job explaining what he was going to do for me.All in all l left feeling amazing, will definitely be recommending these two.
Had an appointment with Jaden Trijo who did a wonderful job on my highlight! Jaden made sure to have our expectations on the same page by communicating. She was being so patient and professional the whole time. All other students & staffs I encountered were very friendly too:) 10/10 experience
Austin F is an amazing hair stylist. I’ve gotten a haircut and a full head color from him and both times it was absolutely amazing. Not only is he amazing with hair, he is very kind and has a great personality. Definitely will see him again!!!
I attend the institute every time I need my hair done and the students always do a wonderful job and the staff is beyond friendly. I have only had one instance where I didnt like how something turned out and the staff immediately fixed the dilemma. I highly recommend.
I have visited this institute several times in the past and the service and skill of the students has always been exemplary. However, my experience yesterday was far from that. I was introduced to my student, Alex and she escorted me to her chair. I was there for a color/root touch up and I had booked my appointment online. The student did not communicate with me the entire time was I there. Never offered a cup of tea even after I asked politely. She appeared unsure of herself when I talked about how they normally blend the color at the end of processing, but I thought everything was clarified when the instructor arrived and explained it to her. When I asked for my ends to trimmed and my layers to be refreshed after the color, she indicated it wasn’t on my ticket and she had to ask permission. She never put any product on my hair, such as Fomulent or Texture Tonic prior to blow dry and never used a round brush or any brush at all (just picked my hair with her fingers) to style my hair, even though I indicated they normally round brush my hair when blow drying which adds volume and the right amount of style. I thought perhaps, if she wasn’t going to round brush my hair perhaps she would of offered to straighten my hair to smooth things and give it a bit of style. It was flat and frizzy after it was thinned and layered dry by the instructor. When I asked for some sort of style to fix the frizz before I left, she indicated that was an extra charge and wasn’t on my ticket. I indicated to her, that when I have received service in the past, color or cut when it’s been blow dried the student has used a round brush to style my hair and it looked great. She then proceeded to blow dry my hair for 5 more minutes brushing my hair flat to my head. She then told me I was done and proceeded to walk up front, never said a word and walked away. Every other guest around me was engaged with their student during their service. I watched as they received their color, cut and style and a hand massage. That is the service I remember from an Aveda Institute and that is what sets it apart from the others. I was very happy with the color and the cut. However, I was very upset by the way I was treated by the student and her lack of communication or willingness provide a service. I did speak to a guest service associate and she did arrange for another student to help fix my hair before I left. I understand that everyone can an off day. I understand as a student you are developing your customer service skills along with your craft. However, I know Aveda has expectations for its students and the services they provide. Hopefully, with this review, it can serve as an opportunity for Alex to reeducate herself in those areas to which she needs to improve.
Yesterday was my first time at the Aveda Institute salon. I’m a new student at MSU and my friend recommended the salon to me. At first, I was hesitant to schedule an appointment because I knew students would be cutting my hair instead of licensed cosmetologists. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The salon was very professional and courteous. From the moment I checked in to the moment I payed I felt well taken care of. My stylist, Alanah, was very friendly and made sure we were on the same page about the style of the cut before beginning. Throughout my appoinment Alanah was upbeat and easy to talk to. The few times she was unsure of how to do something she received assistance from her educators (who were very knowledgeable and happy to help). Overall, my haircut was fairly inexpensive and it looks very good! I had a great first experience.
This is my first time at this facility and Im very happy with the results and experience! My hair stylist was Desaray and she made me feel at home and comfortable. She discussed with me ways to help my hair continue to stay healthy and made sure I was happy with my hair.Shes very knowledgeable with the hair products she used and answered all my questions that I had about the products. Would definitely recommend Desaray to anyone!
Tressa Plant gave me a facial. She made sure I was comfortable, created a welcoming environment and I left relaxed and happy. She was amazing!! I cant wait for my next treatment. 😁
This is my fourth time visiting Douglas J and I am absolutely heartsick about this experience. I came in wanting to take off quite a bit of length and with a photo of a medium length layered bob for wavy hair. I asked for layers and wispy bangs. I left with my hair at my earlobes, all the same length around and blunt short bangs (picture “Edna” from “The Incredibles”.) My hair kept getting shorter on one side and then shorter on the other. Now, after washing and trying to style on my own, one side is still longer. Before blow drying, she asked me if I would prefer to have my hair blown straight or left wavy, I asked for wavy. While blowing it, she told me, “It will have to be straight because I’m drying it.”. After finishing the haircut, she took me to the desk without the instructor looking at the haircut and signing off on the paperwork. I also had my eyebrows waxed and one is significantly thinner. I am so embarrassed by this haircut that when I drove to the salon the following day to touch base with someone, I couldn’t make myself go in. I will not be returning. I wish, if she had questions, she would have asked for help and the instructor would have been more present. She offered feedback in the beginning of the haircut and then disappeared. Shame on me for not speaking up; she was very friendly and nice but that doesn’t make this haircut and my eyebrows any less upsetting.
I know people are nervous to go to a school for massage. I was too. But wow did Alicia Nixon do an amazing job! The pressure was perfect; not too hard that I was hurting while she gave me a massage and not too light that I felt like a baby bird was jumping on my back. She was SUPER professional and made me feel comfortable. The only “complaint” I have is that it’s a little cold in the rooms but that’s not her fault. Go see Alicia for an amazing massage at a decent price. You’ll be very happy. :)
I got a manicure, and it was a really nice experience! The student was really shy and quiet, but she did a great job on my nails. I didnt have an appointment, but I went in the morning and they got me in right away. They also have a coat and bag check, which I appreciated, and I got some really nice orange pekoe tea and a heated neck pillow while I got my nails done.At $24 it may seem a bit pricey for a manicure, but they have really nice facilities AND you get to keep the nail polish! Plus said nail polish is vegan, which is a nice plus for people who are concerned about that.
Today I went to Douglas J Aveda on Grand River for a facial treatment from Jenna Roark. Douglas J is already an especially nice zone for salon and spa services. Jenna was super talented and made me feel totally comfortable during the treatment. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would recommend Douglas J and Jenna to anyone seeking pleasurable skin care. I was given a treatment customized for my specific skin type, and left the building with cleaner skin than Ive had in months. Jenna knew exactly what to treat my skin with, and applied the products with finesse. I will definitely be going back to see her again.
I wanted to get rid of my many shades of purple/pink hair and get as close as possible to my original blonde. My awesome stylist walked me through the process and cautioned me about how the color correction might affect my hair ( he did a test strand to be safe) . I came away from the appointment with all my hair intact, complete with beautiful blonde tones and with almost no purple or light pink in sight. It was a great experience.

I have visited Douglas J, on & off for years and always had good results. After returning from Fl in the spring I had a cut & color. The cut was great but the color was not. I have dark brown hair almost black. I was in the system from previous visits & I agreed we would go with that color on file. The color did not turn out well but I waited until my next appointment which was in 4 weeks & to make sure the formula was changed. I was there for color only on my last appointment on August 20th,2020. The color was great. Later that evening I noticed my nice top had black dye on the back. I called the salon & spoke to a gentleman & asked if they could do anything about the dye on my top. He said he didnt think so but would ask a higher up or if the salon didnt do anything he would do something for me. He said he would get back with me, Im still waiting.
Erinn B dyed my hair a brown and red ombré... and it looks amazing🥰 She did such an amazing job and she was so sweet and conversational the entire time, very enjoyable. My hair feels so much softer and healthier now and I couldn’t have asked for a better job. They were amazing 10/10 :)
