From the moment you walk in you are greeted I cant think of her name but its either Lindsay or Lily but she is phenomenal what customer service and after you pay the cover she says come back up here if you need anything or if you need help. I have been on Friday nights and Saturday nights I feel like Saturday nights are busier than Friday nights. But the crowd on both nights was cool. We love going because you can dress up in 60 70s 80s attire and you fit right in.

Oh man, this place is incredible! Honesty, it has to be the best dance club I’ve ever been to. This is definitely a place for people that like to dance. If you don’t dance, you will not enjoy it. The music was awesome and the vibes are great. Everyone just dancing and enjoying the night. I haven’t danced that much in a long time. 70’s-80’s music mix but still plays some 90’s and up hits. Fun times!!!!

I love Funky Town but tonight was a different experience that really shows their character. The power went out shortly after they opened. They quickly announced that they would stay open an extra hour. They soon announced the power would not be on for a couple of hours. It was getting warm. They were trying to entertain everyone. When people started to leave they automatically gave refunds to everyone without question. This is a hard thing to do when you are only open two days a week. Thank you Funky Town for being a business who does the right thing when it is not easy!

Groovy Baby! Funky Town has great vibes and is an absolutely fun place to have a celebration! Birthdays, bachelorettes, anniversaries, etc. Great range of age groups on the dance floor. Fun colors and pictures opportunities. So many neon lights and signs. Definitely a lot cleaner and nicer than it has been in the past. So much fun to dress up and dance the night away. 🪩🕺🏽💃🏼

We absolutely love this place for once or twice a month dancing and hanging with friends. We are in our 50s and most of the people who come here are older. Great music from the 70s and 80s but it tends to get a little too loud later into the night, would be cool if the deejay would try to save what decent hearing we have left. The deco and atmosphere is black light paint and nostalgia posters and paintings from TV and movies, food is good and the drinks are awesome too.The bouncer is doing a much better job of keeping people from acting up and drinks off the dance floor and its greatly appreciated.Come here if you just like to dance and have fun without all the millennial age drama.Thank you Gary and staff for always providing opportunities for reserving tables if you have a large group coming.

The club is easy to find, almost everyone knows where it is. The parking lot is decent, not too dark or cramped. I am never a fan of a cover charge, especially a $10 one, especially if there isnt a live band. I was going as a part of a birthday party. The atmosphere is perfect if youre into the fun, blacklight type of thing. Unfortunately, during COVID they have to abide by some pretty bogus rules about dancing in little squares and masks... Nothing they can help. The other main thing I am not a fan of, is that it is a cash only bar that the waitress collects every time you order a drink and you cannot run a tab at all. $4 Bud Light bottles. The waitress and the show was great. The music is loud, as to be expected at a club. It could have been better, but overall it was fine!

This place has such potential. The vibe is great and the crowd is very into the 70s theme with many dressing to match the theme. The decor is good but the DJ has no clue. I grew up going to clubs in the 70s and 80s and while some of the song selections are good, they played a couple of 80s songs, some 50s music, Stevie Ray Vaughn and stairway to heaven. People come here to dance to 70s music and you could see the floor empty when the selection went sideways Replace the DJ and you would have a real winner.

For $24 a 6 pack and $8-$12 a mix drink...I should NOT have to pay a cover charge of $15 if I had to wait 20-30 minutes each time I wanted a drink! Two bar tenders most of the night...the bar by the bus says coming soon... Im pretty sure the bathrooms are the cleanest part of this place. Pool tables (one close, one open) couldnt fathom trying to play on the one that was open! Use our money to fix this place or itll crash and burn soon...

The fun atmosphere and concept almost makes up for everything else that is sketchy about this place. If it werent for that, Id give this place a 1 star. The owner does not care about safety. This place is a fire hazard for sure and I would NEVER step foot in there if it is really crowded. Luckily it was not when we went. There are also no exit signs anywhere. There are lots of exposed, very dirtty wiring in the ceiling. When the car wash spinner things came on, it kicked something in the air which made me cough. I saw others leaving the floor because it was also making them cough. The music was way too loud. I lost my voice trying to talk over the music. There were only 2 bartenders which made the drink line long sometimes. Towards the end of the night, we smelled something burning, like burning rubber, which was worrisome considering the former comments. The atmosphere is fun and I did enjoy the music. The owner must count on how fun and nostalgic this place is, and all the cool anesthetics to keep him in business so he doesnt have to fix all the sketchy things about this place. I would not pay $15 to go here again.

Overall, we feel let down. We are from Minneapolis. For us the cover of $15 nearly matches the busiest bars cover on its busiest night, on a mediocre weekend here. The drinks we were poured cost us $10 a drink, and literally you cannot taste any alcohol. We feel scammed. However, all the right music was played, and it looms fantastic inside. There is food available, but we didnt try any. If you come here, definitely pre-drink and have a designated driver. We spent $52 for 2 people: $30 for 2 covers, $20 for 2 drinks that had almost no alcohol, and $2 tip.

Not enough people working the bar/food lines. I would come back on a night that 5 party busses dont show up all at once, lol!Bathrooms were clean and well kept, space was clean.

Funky Town KC is far from the fun and exciting night club it was years ago. Went there for my 21st birthday in 2013 and it has been a yearly tradition for so many birthdays since. However, it is very much missing nearly ALL of its good points. They used to have staff that would dance and get people on the dance floor. Not anymore. They used to open the dance floor officially at 9PM on the dot with a performance of the song Funkytown. Now it plays by 10PM if youre lucky, and no performance aside from them playing it at top volume on their blown out speaker system. They used to have staff going table to table getting orders. Not anymore.Recently visited this last Saturday 7/22 and it was probably the worst experience we have ever had there. The price increases are ridiculous. It was an $8 cover charge for years, and it increased to $10 after COVID. They increased it again to $15 per person, which for the experience we had is honestly not worth it. We counted a total of 6 staff all night. One was the door checker checking IDs and coats. They had 2 DJs behind the DJ booth at all times, 2 bartenders and we saw one security personnel. We assume that is who they were as they told people to get off of the cage on the dance floor. Only 1 bar was open, as the second bar area behind the van (that used to be open years ago) has read coming soon for literally years as if they are renovating that area. Still have no idea what renovations they are doing there. Dust, grime and who knows what covered the ceilings so thickly we didnt know what we were looking at at first. Only 1 of the 2 pool tables were open. The one that was available, was so broken it was almost unplayable as the pool balls would lose all momentum after hitting a side wall. You could literally feel the pieces of the side walls underneath the felt and could feel how broken they were. It took almost 40 minutes of waiting in line to get drinks (we literally had a timer going). Drink prices also increase significantly. An AMF used to be $9 and it is now $12 and not nearly as strong as they usually are. Water is not free, nor do they offer ice water in a cup. Only bottle water is available for $2.50 and its a small bottle of spring water. No food is available either. They used to have a full menu with fun little dishes like Britney Pickle Spears and M.C. Hammer-burger etc. After COVID they were selling Jacks brand pizza (which you can get for $1.50 at your local Walmart) for $12 per pizza. Now they have NO food options, which blows my mind. The music was so loud and the speakers were so blown out that my ears are STILL ringing as I am typing this out days after my visit.Funky Town has a great group of patrons that regularly visit because of its uniqueness. However, all those unique qualities, aside from the decor inside and the setlist, are almost all gone. While I understand that COVID had a huge impact on local businesses, I cant help but feel that just isnt the case here. The lack of staff, the lack of up keep, the lack of care in this establishment is do diminished it is sad. Hopefully the owner is able to complete renovations, hire more staff, clean the place up and make some much needed repairs and maintenance in order to bring it back to its former glory. Sadly, I dont see that happening, and will probably have to just watch this used to be gem slowly die.

This place was super crowded. The Dancefloor is way smaller than what’s needed. I’m not sure what code capacity is for that building but they exceed it. I’m sure of it. When they put the soap on the floor, it is a danger to whoever is dancing. And they need to teach their DJ how to DJ. When he puts two songs together, it sounds like a train wreck. The food was mediocre at best. The drinks are over priced $10 for one cup. Being an all cash establishment is an inconvenience for all of its patrons.

Please for the love of god y’all have a self serve water station set up for free. People are downing their drinks to head out on the dance floor, sweating up a storm and then not properly hydrating. Charging 2.50 for water should be a crime; and if people pass out from dehydration I hope y’all are using all the money your getting from charging for water to cover their hospital visits.

This place is cash only. $15 cover charge to get in and then all drinks are $10. I thought it was illegal for a bar to charge for water? They are charging $2.50 for water and have signs posted saying “no free water”. So if you’re DDing, it’s going to be $17.50 just to hang out and make sure your friends are safe. The decorations and different areas are decorated really cool and the neon lights really make everything pop but I would not go back. It’s way too expensive and not worth the money for the very average atmosphere.

I love Funky Town, I love dressing up, and I love disco music with a passion! My only complaints are that its cash only and that its only open 2 nights a week. They have a dress code both on their website and outside their front door, as well as rules posted for you to read before coming inside- including the 2 person limit at the front counter at a time. If you get there after 930 you can usually expect to wait a few minutes in line since thats when a lot of people show up.Also, the doors open at 8 but the real party portion of the night doesnt start until closer to 10, and the restaurant-style seating is plenty far away from the dance floor if the music gets to be louder than you like.9/10 recommend going at least once if youre visiting the KCMO area, and going at least a few times a year if you live here. The music and atmosphere are unique and captivating!

We never do anything for New Years. So this year we decided it was time. We saw on funky towns website they were having nye. We called several times and the gentleman told us all back next Wednesday now call back next Friday. Then when we finally went in there to get tickets they were to be open and were not we got thirty minutes down the road and got a call. It was a lady named Mary. We turned around and bought the tickets. However she forgot to sign and stamp the ticket. We can just keep going back and forth so when B went to drill he stayed and went one night and got them signed and we were told everything is good now. We get to the club right at 8 pm to get a seat etc. we walk in and there are names on all the tables so now we have no we’re to sit . The waitress tried but is confused we get the manager iris. And this is when things go very wrong. We first have to prove to her that we bought tickets The day they going to sell that’s not my job as a customer secondly she’s screaming where everyone can hear it making it look like we are bad for her not doing her job then she blames a guy with a name I believe George or Greg says it was his job to do the seating chart again not my job as a customer to think about what some other guy was supposed to do then she screams at the waitress which again not her job .We didn’t make the best of it but we were planning on buying a lot of beverages that night we ended up buying zero drinks and just dancing the dancing was fun but if everybody would’ve try to get on the stage there would’ve been absolutely no way there were times that people were dancing on the sides or on where you’re supposed to walk because the stage was too small it would’ve been nice to be able to drink but we’re obviously not gonna pay for drinks when we don’t even have a table assigned to us. But it would’ve been nice to even be able to buy some water or some Coke but there’s no way you’re gonna stand there with people banging into each other trying to drink and I also don’t think you’re supposed to have drinks on the dance floor anyways.

I have been to funky town many times and have generally always had a good experience. The $10 cover charge is pretty unnecessary and the cash only bar is inconvenient but I can deal with it. The biggest problem is sitting at the front desk right when you walk in the door. I have on more than one occasion witnessed this woman berate and scream at people who are just trying to get into the door. Just rude and unnecessary. Also ladies, keep in mind if this woman decides she doesn’t like what you are wearing or if she thinks you’re showing too much skin or cleavage, she will not let you inside. Funky town has the potential to be a great dance spot and a fun time, but I really hope the front door staff doesn’t ruin it for everyone. Hope to see some positive changes soon.

First and foremost Im a 49 year old who grew up in the era of music they are trying to play. I went to funky town right before covid hit. And was really disappointed. The dance floor was a mess the sound system was a mess... Last night my friend wanted to celebrate her bachelorette party there. We didnt make a reservation but were able to luckily find a small booth for us to sit in. I was pleased to see that the sound system and the floors were both improved. However, I really feel like the DJs know zero about music from the 70s or 80s. The music they selected was like a top 20 for the whole decade. They might have played two 80 songs and a song from the backstreet boys... yuck. If youre going to play Disco era music theres so many other better artists to play. And I feel they only stick to a handful. So it just felt worn out and on repeat. Also whoevers DJing does not know how to transition from one song to another. And lastly playing music off of something you found where they were singing live and the audience is screaming in the background is not what you play in a club. Overall I feel the DJs need to work with older people from that generation to guide them to have a better sound experience for those of us that lived in that generation. As really when you walk away the experience is kind of tacky. And I think it could be better than that..I also think that the decor could improve as well but one thing at a time.

Had a wonderful time with friends for a birthday party. The women’s restroom was very clean, spacious, and has a couple chairs to sit in if you’re exhausted. People love to complain about the cash only bar, but when the drinks are twice the size of what I can get somewhere else, I will gladly wait. Unfortunately, they chose not to open the second bar until after 10:30, when we already had to wait almost 30 minutes in a line that wrapped around the check in and back into the seating area. They should definitely open the second bar by 10:00.My biggest critique is the lack of public awareness of the house rules. House rules aren’t posted anywhere (acceptable dress code, no drinks on the dance floor, etc.). If the patrons were more aware, then there wouldn’t be so many comments about the “rude staff”.

I had a great experience at Funky Town until our experience with Brandon. Everyone was dancing and it was packed. However, Brandon, the bouncer who must kick out those with drinks on the dance floor was unnecessarily rude. It was my first time at the venue and I did not know drinks were not allowed on the dance floor. He proceeded to take my full drink, spilling half of the $5 beer on my shirt. I would’ve gladly gone off the dance floor, as I was unaware of the rule. He was very rude and I will not go back because of him. The bar is cool but the staff is not something I want to experience again. I understand he has a difficult job but they need to understand that is a rule that is not common at other bars and make it more apparent or be nicer when it’s someone’s first warning.

Funky Town gets 5 stars for being unapologetically what it is. Its a drive from most of the greater KC area, which makes it a destination. And its worth it! I think the $10 cover is a little steep, but otherwise, Im totally down with Funky Town! Its definitely the place to go with a large group, but you dont have to. Its also fun to get dressed up to suit the theme, but you dont have to. The age range is wide and also the types of people is varied, which is another reason its great. For the inconvenience of a cash bar (credit cards were around in the 70s btw) that also has a cover charge, we expected more but as the old saying goes fool me twice shame on me. Thats fine but the way she said it made me think she was kidding (since Ive never been here before) and she just went off on me it was extremely unprofessional and made me want to leave but she let me in anyways. She definitely needs an attitude adjustment or a new job because she hit me with the Im really tired of people asking me why ripped jeans are against the dress code. And kept rolling her eyes. It was also insanely hot inside, which there was a lot of people in there so they cant help that. But other than that I had a really good time, my calves are actually sore from dancing the night away!

One of my absolute favorite places! The staff arent great with parties (whether you made a reservation or not) but the place itself makes up for that tenfold. I always have the best time. Dont be deceived by the location and the outside of the building, its a total blast, and they play the best music.

The good: The place is real weird. In a cool way. But also in a way, that like, you can imagine Bill Cosby might put on a wig and go here to find ladies for his needs. The drinks were a tad pricey but also boozey. The bad: They charge a cover and you have to pay cash. The bar is cash only. The staff was rude. Its a dance club and the place was very warm when I went there, and THEY CHARGE FOR WATER. FOR WATER. IN A WARM DANCE CLUB IN AMERICA. Is that even legal? Ugh.-LS

Funky Town is a lot of fun, its one of those places that everyone should visit at least once. That being said, i will probably only be visiting Funk Town the one time. The main reason i say this is because the drinks are outragously expensive, the water isnt free, they only accept cash, and theres a 10 dollar cover. A draft Bulevard is about 10 dollars and a friend of mine bought shots for the table which came out to 13 dollars per shot.

Five cars had their windows busted out November 18, 2017. There was a guy on staff standing outside the front door smoking all night and he “didn’t hear a thing.” The place is good novelty fun, but if you can’t count on your vehicle being in one piece when you leave...We WON’T be returning.

Apparently, this establishment is exempt from the laws of the ADA. Came tonight with our 83 year old grandmother... And was told there was nowhere for her to sit. We were then told by the lady at the front desk that reservations that did not show up by 9 p.m would be canceled. At 9:15 p.m., there was an unclaimed table, and we chose to sit in the chairs. At 9:20, management approached us and told us that the table is reserved, and we had to give it up. After three requests for a chair for her to sit in, she was still denied even a single chair to sit in. Thankfully, everyone around us all the situation, and helped us work with a group who had reserved the table who did not need all their chairs. This was an unbelievable experience for her, and with bad knees and hardly able to stand, an hour and 15 minutes seem like forever.

The door lady was VERY RUDE. I get out of my Uber and she proceeds to tell me that I can’t enter because my shorts are cuts offs. They are American eagle shorts by the way. Just kind of seems like she was upset because I was cute. There could have been a million different ways to handle that. I understand if I was breaking a dress code violation and I’m all about following the rules buttttttttt we came all the way to basically get disrespected on sight, pretty rude. ALSO as we waited for our ride she proceeds to smoke about 5 cigarettes which do you boo boo but that’s super unprofessional. I don’t think you should allow her to be the face of your business. I would give zero stars if I could.

Not only does it play my favorite dance music, but I have found that Funkytown is the safest club in the metro area to get my dance fix. The bouncers/management watch out for me in the parking lot as well as on the dance floor. It is nice to be able to relax and have fun.

Ch
Review №73

I enjoyed myself! It was on the expensive side, from the cover charge ($20) to the drinks. They have private security patrolling the parking lot throughout the night though which was an added comfort from the moment of arrival. I had a couple $9 long island iced teas, but they came in a large cup that I was pleasantly surprised to have received for the price I paid. They were pretty busy, so there was a wait at the bar to order drinks/food, but nothing that struck me as poor service. I did enjoy an order of fried mushrooms from the kitchen which were delicious! Plenty of places to sit off to the side and out of the way, a back patio for smokers, a couple pool tables and a small dining area. A fairly large dance floor exists and seems to be where the majority of the patrons hung out. They played music that spanned late 60s - late 80s disco dance tunes, with the occasional modern hit thrown in here and there. In my opinion, the interesting & unique thing about this nightclub was the art decor. You can catch a glimpse/preview of such in the parking lot (which can be seen as you arrive via 350 HWY and/or 63rd Street) but it gets much more intricate once inside. It definitely places you in a world all its own, and a very fun and active environment at that! By the time I left, I was convinced that Funkytown was the perfect name for this one of a kind dive bar. Id recommend to anyone who asked or is looking for something different and unique from the nightlife experience! Be prepared to spend at least $35-50 at a minimum. Theres also a QuikTrip less than a couple minutes down 63rd Street for those closing time munchies.

Had a blast and I dont even drink;) Only issue I have is that I couldnt bring my 17 and 20 year olds who love to dance and dont drink. Wish you could have a bring your kids night once a week. We would be there every week. Would open up a whole new market.. No place in Kc to bring kids or young adults to dance. Would be a great example to set that you can dance and have fun without drinking alcohol. You could have all kids of fun drinks that dont have alcohol. Bet youd make just as much money...

Can we go negative 10? The club itself is a blast. Once you get leave your vehicle in the parking lot you re SOL. Supposedly they have security cameras which didnt help us at all when they directed us to park in a back lot where our Ford F350 which supports our livelihood... was stolen. Ive gotten messages from people all day who have had their cars broken into and stolen. Even an X employee who said this was normal when they worked there and that the club doesnt care whatsoever. The treatment we got last night was to bad for ya from a person with a staff shirt on and the only other word was.. Id call the cops. No manager, no help. No care. Its crazy. Go have a blast in the club it is great but I certifiably wouldnt drive any vehicle there and park it. Take a cab,bus etc or dont go.
