I got a haircut and a botanical treatment from Josephine M and she did an incredible job! She understood exactly what I wanted done to my hair, and she always double checked that she understood what I was asking for and I liked how it looked before she continued. I am always nervous to have other people cut my hair, so Ive been doing it by myself for years, and I felt safe and taken care of in her chair - she was very thoughtful and patient with my questions and concerns. If you are an at-home haircutter, and worried about other people cutting your hair, I highly recommend giving Josephine a chance - Ive never left a salon with a haircut I love so much!!
We will not be returning after giving them a second try. My mom scheduled our appointments for us to do mother daughter things together. Both times my moms’ stylist was late and we schedule as the first appointment of the day. The first time she had a bad experience with her hair stylist and this second time the bookings were so screwed up that until I advocated for her they weren’t going to complete her waxing (yes I was polite about it but made it clear we would find somewhere else to go get her waxing done). I was supposed to be scheduled for a waxing as well but chose not to even ask about mine. I just wanted my mom taken care of. Then when she went back to get her waxing I was told I couldn’t wait there and had to go back downstairs. I would have just stayed downstairs if I had been told this initially but then to be basically be escorted out of the area like I was doing something bad was incredibly uncomfortable. There seems to be a fundamental breakdown in training and communication at this particular location. We understand it’s a school. We’ve been going to another location for years but never had this poor of an experience multiple times in a row. In the future we will just make the longer drive either to a different location or somewhere else entirely.
Today I got my first ever facial. Jessica S was so welcoming and took me step by step and made sure I understood everything. She was amazing. I will definitely be booking with her again!!
I have never in my life left a bad review anywhere but this was so out of this world that it makes me question whether all the 5-star reviews here are made by bots or empty accounts. Usually I visit the Douglas J in Kerrytown but since I only wanted a blowout with a botanical treatment I decided to book it here.My name was called by my stylist who did not respond when I greeted her with hi how are you. During the washing process soapy water was sprayed all over my face and shampoo water dripped into my eyes when she moved her wet hands across my face. My stylist had acrylic nails on and my scalp was scrubbed so harshly with the TIPS OF HER NAILS instead of fingers that my scalp was burning when product was next put on it.I have fragile hair due to past bleaching and dyeing. During the drying process a thick brush was put through my hair so hard that I could literally hear strand after strand snapping, and after looking at my hair closely at home I can see so many broken ends. My hair was brushed so violently hard that my head would get pulled toward the brush and snap back when the last few strands gave way.In the description on the website with what I booked it said it included light iron work and I wanted a light wavy blowout which is why I booked the appointment in the first place. However at the very end I was told that such iron work was not included and that my stylist did not have time to do curls for me because she had already scheduled the next slot.I booked this place with an understanding that stylists are in training and still learning. As a student I can appreciate hands-on learning and I can understand if my stylist needed to consult her instructor from time to time or was not able to execute complicated cuts and colors, but this was a blowout - the simplest item on the menu. I am concerned about the stylists that come out of training here if there is no effort to even verbally greet customers or treat their hair with respect.In the end I paid close to $50 for no waves in my hair, a whole load of snapped hair, my makeup being basically washed off my face, and a burning scalp. I would recommend anyone considering booking treatments here to look elsewhere 😊
In all transparency I went twice here, the first appointment I wasn’t super happy with how my hair had turned out, but their policy’s allowed for me to go back and get it touched up.I saw Matthew for the second appointment and he was fantastic. I think I’ll be going to him for a long time after this. Listened very closely to what I was saying about my hair and took his time to ensure I was happy with everything. His instructors were also extremely kind and supportive.So, be patient, folks are learning. I had a pretty complicated request and my hair turned out great.

Had a lash tint with Devon Harding and she KILLED IT. It was so comfortable, she did such a precise job and did not irritate the skin around my eyes (which is no small feat). Every other time I’ve gotten this done my eyes are red after from the esthetician rubbing the dye off… but not this time! And they look the best they ever have. Got my hair cut by Jazmen last night and WOW!!! I took off several inches and went from hair down to my collar bone to a bob at my chin. I’ve been here several times and all the students do a great job, but the haircut I got from Jazmen was the best one to date. She nailed the length and it is so incredibly even. I will be booking specifically with her again! She is truly a gem and such a kind person. I highly recommend her!
Went in for a relaxing facial yesterday and absolutely loved everything about the service. Maria did an amazing job. More than a facial it was a journey of aromatherapy, sensory stimulation and gentle pampering. Maria does know her stuff. I am soo glad I chose to come here for a facial, my face looked super clear after the service. Not to forget, I felt super relaxed during and after the session too. Maria is great! Kallie J did a really great job with my haircut + custom conditioner (botanicals)! I had asked to cut off 4 inches with some layers and she delivered. She also recommended the nutri-plenish hair oil which she applied at the end of my haircut - it left my hair smelling good. Would recommend Kallie - I could tell she really cares about her work!
Lola Nicklin did an amazing job dying and styling my hair! She was so accommodating and matched my hair perfectly to the color I was wanting, giving me black that wasn’t jet black and didn’t wash me out. Through the process she was gentle, I felt so pampered, she provided a spa like experience I loved it.
Kourtney Williams tinted my eyelashes & it was amazing! Great results, so easy & she was a pro. Definitely would see her again. #estheticianLewis Chandler got all of my tight knots out during my 90’ massage. He’s close to graduating, so you may have to book him privately soon - worth it! I had professional sports massages as an athlete for years & he used new techniques to really get that shoulder and neck tension to disappear. Went here today for my first time, and I cant believe I hadnt heard about it before. I had my hair cut and colored by Brooklynn B. and well... I think the before and after photos speak for themselves! Ive had highlights at many salons in my time, but this was by FAR the best theyve ever turned out. Somehow, she made my hair effortlessly lighter without dyeing my entire head. She is the absolute loveliest person, and I genuinely wish she could cut and color my hair for the rest of my life. :)
Prior to my appointment, I receive 4 phone calls confirming what services I made reservations for. I arrived only to find the services I requested were not the ones I requested. Even when I checked, my request was changed from getting a color touch up, hair cut and wax to foils, no hair cut, no wax. Not the stylist’s fault but the staff needs to correct their mistakes and be more polite to waiting customers!
This was one of the best things I’ve done for myself in a long time! My facial with Rebecca R was amazing. She was very informative on skin care, products and best practices for healthy, hydrated skin. I felt like I was in good hands (pun intended) every step of the way. My skin feels fresh, revitalized, and looks glowy, I might even say dewy - and I’m 53 years old! Bonus points for the lovely neck and shoulder massage. If you’re reading this review, do yourself a favor and book an appointment!
Horrible customer service. They cancelled 2 appointments the day of because they didn’t have a stylist. Then, I had booked my daughter for a color confirmed at 1:30, and they called at 1:20 to cancel and said the appointment was at 1. They are very unorganized and the cheaper price is not worth the trouble.
Kaitlyn Hamblin, aka @k.rosecosmetology, was the BEST experience I’ve had a Douglas J and I’ve been going there for years. It’s always an enjoyable time at Douglas J Institute with the comfortable setting and cozy hot tea. But Kaitlyn turned my outgrown highlights and sun-damaged hair into a shiny head of perfectly blended honey blonde highlights. I couldn’t be more excited and more thankful for how it turned out.Also, a student Hannah was coloring someone’s hair next to me and it looked so good.Huge shout out to Douglas J and the PM crew they have right now!
I have never had a bad haircut at Aveda Institute. I have gone to both the East Lansing and, more recently, the Ann Arbor locations, and every time I leave, I have the haircut I want. The students are well-educated, and the top-notch instructors are quick to support their students when a learning opportunity presents itself. My last visit to the Ann Arbor location was May 22 and the instructor that assisted my student was absolutely amazing.
Courtney V was an amazing masseuse. I have a lot of back problems and she did fantastic work on those, and the foot reflexology was very intentional and felt great. Lovely person and relaxing massage.
Didn’t get a good haircut or service by a student. I saw some students did a good job with their customers, but not me. When I asked to do some adjustments after she done with my hair. She was inpatient. And too many people there. Teacher was also busy.I was not happy at all so I even didn’t tip them.Will not go back there and take the risks again.
So incredibly disappointed and frustrated with my experience. Ive been here for my hair 3 times. The first appointment the full head and balayage turned out beautifully. The second time I asked for the same thing, showed them a picture of my hair from the first appointment, and mentioned I really just want my grown out roots and some pieces darkened and maybe a touch up on my already created highlights. I left the appointment with all of my hair lighter than when I came in. She said to come back for a touch up, recognizing her mistake.I came in for my touch up, being incredibly clear that I want my hair 95-97% dark brown with money pieces and a couple highlights for dimensions. I had to repeat my self multiple times during the consultation to the student and instructor until I thought we were on the same page. No bleaching, just add dark color and leave a couple pieced light.After 3 hours my hair color is incredibly choppy, many different colors and tones. It looked obviously horrible.A new instructor cane over and asked if it turned out how I wanted, I kindly said no, and she said Feel free to rebook a redo, thanks for coming in.I understand this is a school, I absolutely understand. But the problem here isnt lack of talent, its not listening to or caring what the customer wants.I dont want a redo, as the trend is that I leave looking worse each time. I want my money back.
My stylist was amazing. She took great care to evenly apply the color and blend it. She washed my hair thoroughly and even gave me a blowout.
I had my first Chemical Peel by Charlize, an esthiology student at Douglas J. She was amazing! Made me feel so comfortable and she was so thorough to make sure the product mix was right for my skin type. The results were dramatic and I’ve already booked a follow up appointment with her!
I have been to Aveda for services several times so its a shame that Im having to write this review to get any type of recognition. I booked an appointment for a scalp treatment and massage on 2/13/24 for the appointment to be on 2/23/24. I live in Livonia, a 30 minute drive both ways.I get to my appointment and Im sitting in the chair waiting for my appointment to start when the worker comes up to me and says Im sorry, we have a worker on disability and cannot perform your massage Im sorry what? Im literally sitting here waiting for it right now, I just drove 30 minutes, you couldnt have canceled before?! She says theres a different treatment I can get, its a stress relieving facial and Im thinking okay, for my inconvenience, its on the house? Wrong. Its 20% off thats the best she can do. I ask, what about me driving 30 minutes to get here, paying for downtown parking, and your mistake for not canceling me, what do I get in compensation for ruining my Friday night? I get 20% off my next service and the manager will call the next day to hopefully make it better.Well, 2 days have gone by and no call from the manager. 20% is the best that you can do? How about paying me for the $15 in gas, $3 in parking, and another $10 for the inconvenience. Obviously joking, but 20% is ridiculous! What? Do you think $5 off my next service so this can happen again?! Ive come here at least half a dozen times and this is the most unprofessional Ive ever seen! You had 10 days to figure this out! You didnt even have the audacity to cancel the day of, better yet when Im there! And then a manager doesnt even call to make this right?! Unless this is straighten out I will never come here again.DONT COME HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET CANCELLED WHILE YOURE IN THE SALON!20% off.. what a JOKE
Beth Perry (@bethstylehair on Instagram) did my haircut with a botanical treatment, and I had a great experience! My hair feels so much softer after the treatment. I really needed it after so much bleaching in past months.I was a little nervous going to Aveda since I’ve heard mixed reviews from friends. But, I figured I just wanted a simple cut with no layers and a conditioning treatment, so not too risky. I was more than happy walking out.Beth was very professional and kind. I could tell she was very passionate about hair. This is a hair school, so they make it very clear that you are being serviced by a student. However, Beth’s supervisor came to check a few times to check on the progress of my service. I loved my cut, but my only complaint was that it was a bit blunt for my liking, but Beth’s supervisor was more than happy to help. I really wish I could have left a tip for her, but students are not allowed to receive tips.Definitely recommend Beth for your hair needs! If you have any issues with your hair, don’t be afraid to speak up bc they will do what they can to make you happy. Also, there’s a 10% discount for students on top of their already low prices.
Edit: Im disappointed to see that someone has responded to my review giving the impression that they followed through or were helpful in any way. I spoke with someone on Thursday who stated that she would be emailing the educator and myself before she left for the day. 6 days later I called again and still had it wait for several days for a return to call to tell me they couldn’t assist in any way, including my ask for a discounted service for anything non-hair related. I went here for over five years and was more disappointed in the customer service than anything.I asked for a trim that was just enough to cut off the dead ends but keep the length. The individual who cut my hair showed me how much she was going to cut which was about 3 inches. Attached is a photo of my hair a few days before I had cut it and the day I went to Aveda, which was closer to 5 or 6 inches. I called the institute and asked to speak with one of the educators who told me “unfortunately this is a school so this happens all the time” and was told that a manager would contact me the following day. I didn’t hear from anyone today and when I called requesting to speak with someone I was told they had left for the day and I’d have to try again tomorrow. I do respect and understand that going to Aveda does mean that you are working with students but in the several years I’ve gone to them for haircuts I’ve never had such a significant issue. I was surprised by how poor the customer service has been since the cut. I’m so sad to have lost so much of my hair.
I’ve been coming here for over 3 years and the only reason I still come in is because the massage services/students are great.The front desk customer service is unprofessional. My massages get rescheduled or cancelled regularly with little notice and no explanation. One of my massages was scheduled to today—hash bash in Ann Arbor. Because of traffic, I called to let them know I was running late and was told on the whole that it was no issue so long as I came in the 15 min grace period.I hurried and paid extra for parking to get a spot—only to be told when I entered, by Karen—no I mean Zoey, that she has already marked me as a no show since it was 3:14. I asked for extra understanding because I live out of town and didn’t know it would be so busy. She cited that it was against company policy. I feel as though she targeted me after seeing me, since there was a discrepancy on what was said over the phone and what was said in person. After some humming and hawing, Zoey relented that they could do a chair massage. When I got back to my masseuse she said she could give me the correct service, no problem. It’s a shame the front desk customer service is not so good.That said, the massages are so good that Zoey should try give them a try, they may be able to massage out her subliminal racism.
Been here lots of times for haircuts - great looks and a convenient location if you work downtown - but I recently tried the spa services and had a terrific relaxing evening. Highly recommend paying a little extra to get an extra half-hour of facial. I thought the instructor would be there more to check the student’s work and break the calm, but nope.Thank you, student Rebecca!
I got a facial with Kelsey and let me tell you it was AMAZING!! We started off by going over my skin concerns and my thoughts about my skin which I always assumed my skin was pretty oily, but with the skin analysis she performed we actually found out that I was pretty dry and just had a few spots of oiliness! Choosing the aromatherapy was so fun and made for a really calming experience. She also made sure to walk me through what she was doing and applying to keep me informed which I loved. She did such an amazing job at making me feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire experience! I highly recommend going to see Kelsey for an amazing facial and I will definitely be going back to see her!!!

Update: manager reached out and was very kind, offering to help meI went in for a haircut, botanical treatment, and shine treatment to improve the condition of my hair. I guess whoever used the bottle with shine treatment prior to my stylist did not clean it out, and it had blue dye in it. It was only in my hair for about two minutes total, and the student noticed pretty immediately. She and the instructor mixed up a detox solution to try to take it out of my hair. My hair is no longer blue, but I went in with a cool, blonde balayage I got a few months ago that was maintained nicely, and now my hair is somehow light brown without any appearance of highlights. The detox smelled like ammonia, which I just looked up and is pretty bad for structural integrity of hair. Im upset about this because I went in saying that I wanted to improve the condition of my hair. I guess it may have been necessary for all of the blue to come out, but its still upsetting because I try to take really good care of my hairs quality since I lighten it occasionally.The haircut is perfect and exactly what I wanted. I received all the services I asked for, and the student was not at fault and very apologetic. She was really great and deserves 5 stars for her performance. She wasnt afraid to ask her instructor questions which is commendable. But the general quality of my hair (besides removal of split ends during the cut) is noticeably poorer to touch because of somebody elses negligence. I thought that the darker appearance was lighting (it was sunny when I went in and it was raining and dark by the time we finished), but I saw several colleagues after my appointment and they all asked me if I dyed my hair from blonde to brown, as did my roommates.I attached photos in similar lighting of what my hair color looked like a few weeks ago (on the left) and what I came out with (on the right) for reference.
Rude instructors. First instructor described my haircut to myself and the trainee to use the #2 guard for the clippers. Then, when second instructor asked me to describe said haircut to be done, I was rudely told that I should not be describing my haircut that way because thats only used for barbers.
I had an amazing facial done by Monica. Beforehand we went over my concerns for my skin and what my goal was. My skin has been dry with the winter time & I had left my session absolutely hydrated and glowing, skin feels buttery smooth. The aromatherapy was great & she was very accommodating & made sure I was comfortable the whole way through. Definitely recommend booking her for future facials. (:

Wow!! Douglas J Aveda is fantastic! Ive gotten haircuts from here before and every time I walk in I am greeted by friendly people! Its a wonderful environment and everyone is so nice and friendly. All the students here are so talented and I can tell they have studied under the best teachers. I love this business and feel good every time I leave the store. All their products are so good and they really work! Thank you to Lola who styled my hair the last time, she was so talented and I love it! And thank you Douglas J Aveda for giving me a 5 star experience!
While I got the hair color I asked for (simple single process black) so did my face. Neither the student nor the instructor offered to clean up the dye that is all over me. Pics only show whats on my front and sides. The back is even worse. Guess I should of had my sister, an un-licensed hairdresser on the side do this instead of paying close to $50. Hope this comes off as I have work in a few days 🤦🏻♀️

She was nice and friendly and overall just a great personality that make you want to come back and the haircut she did gave me such a great and need confidence boost, any salon would be lucky to have. Already rebook to have her do highlights on me.
I had a facial and eyebrow wax and it was great. Check in and check out were seamless, the facility was spotless, and the aesthetician/student was excellent. Such a relaxing experience! Good value too.

I had an amazing experience here! This was the first time Ive ever dyed my hair, so I was nervous, but Sam C did an absolutely beautiful job with a neutral balayage! Sammy made sure to know EXACTLY what I wanted and continued checking with educators throughout the process to make sure everything was going smoothly.
I received a 90 minute massage from Kimberly. It was amazing! I’m a disabled veteran with lots of tension, aches & pains in my back/neck. Kimberly’s hands are made of magic. Best massage I’ve had my whole life. She asked how I wanted my energy to feel at the end. I said rejuvenated…. REJUVENATED is how I felt. I will be booking another one with her before she’s off crushing the industry.
I had a wonderful first visit to Aveda. My wife booked me for a Stress Relief Therapy session with a massage and some aroma therapy. I’m not big on booking these types of things, but it was very nice and relaxing.Karlen did an excellent job making me feel comfortable, explaining everything she was doing, and it was a very enjoyable experience.The stress relief included a quick foot exfoliation, neck and shoulder massage, scalp massage, hand and arm massage, then back massage, and finally a foot massage. Steamed towels, pleasant, subtle scents throughout, and some relaxing music.Everything felt very safe and masks are required, but they made it work, even still.I would definitely recommend a visit and if you get paired with Karlen, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.10/10 would do again.
I always have a great experience here and my last visit was especially wonderful. I had my hair cut and highlighted by Makenna and it was the best highlight Ive ever had. I was heading to Italy for two weeks and she made my hair look amazing. I used to lead small group travel in Italy and this was my first trip back since the pandemic. I felt so polished and professional and pretty! (BTW, I turned 54 while in Italy and I was glad that Makenna helped me to have such cute hair!) Thank you Makenna!!!
So giving 3 stars because this place was great when I was a broke college student and needed something simple but also warning others to not go here if you’ve already invested a lot of money in your hair. I spent close to a year and $600-ish dollars to get my hair back to blonde and loved my color and just asked for a couple highlights in the same beigy color but whatever they did seemed to completely undo it. After I washed my hair later on after my appointment here my roots were yellow, my hair had an orange tint to it and my bangs don’t match my roots. Going to another salon to hopefully have this mistake fixed. Including before and after pics. Before it’s the sandy blonde, after is the root shot
I’m not normally a person who writes reviews but I had to shout out Devin Richardson for taking the absolute dumpster fire that was my hair prior and making it look so dreamy. Photos don’t even do the transition justice. Also Devin was just chill as hell and lovely and kind to chat with but also didn’t seem to mind when I wanted to do some quiet reading. 15/10 couldn’t recommend higher.
All of the staff members that I met were super friendly and communicative, especially the instructor Traci, who was super outgoing and friendly and checked in multiple times throughout my appointment. I had scheduled a balayage, and given that I had used box dye in the last year, Hannah M., the student doing my hair and the instructors overseeing her did a strand test to make sure the color would lift well, which I really appreciated. The attentiveness of all the staff members was really evident and I liked this aspect of it. However, what I did not expect was that it would take almost 5 hours to get highlights that were barely noticeable. Hannah definitely did her best, and was super nice, but I do think more check ins to manage time, and having an instructor or another student assisting students with larger hair coloring projects is necessary. Hannah had to leave after placing all my foils, and an instructor, Nae, took over. I had told Hannah that I wanted my hair toned down fairly close to my natural color, and once it was toned, washed, and dried, I could barely see the highlights at all. Upon arriving home, I had to search for the highlights in my hair, and even after asking friends and family, no one could notice unless in a certain lighting. I was going for more of a subtle look with highlights, but not so subtle that they were barely noticeable. While the staff were really friendly, and I understand that these are students working on hair, I don’t think I’ll come to Douglas J. Aveda for hair coloring services again. I love getting haircuts here though, and hope this constructive feedback can be helpful! Thank you!Additionally, as many other reviews stated, I had my appointment booked prior to this, and the day before the appointment I received a text saying that it needed to be rescheduled, and all other students were booked. The only information I was given was to go on the website to check for availability for a later date. Fortunately, this wasnt an issue in my schedule, but if youre going to cancel appointments last minute, I think its important to get that canceled appointment in as soon as possible, and suggest or make other available times within a couple days of the original appointment. This system clearly needs to be improved as it appears to be an issue thats not unique to just me.
Allyson Floyd did a great job with my haircut! I have very curly hair and she made sure to listen to my preferences and did a great job. She asked if I would like to be cut dry or wet which I appreciated. She was also very friendly and easy to talk with!
My first time visiting to Douglas was extremely satisfying. Emma did a wonderful for my brows. As this being my first Time trying out waxing for brows and it was not really painful. She was very extremely careful as I have delicate skin which causes redness immediately though took care of it and did a very immense job.. :) Thank you Emma!!Adding another review today: 06th March I had an appointment for scalp massage. Anna W did a great job on my facial. I really appreciate that she made sure I was comfortable including putting a bolster under my knees. She was great at educating & select the right ingredients for my facial. The only thing that took away from this otherwise blissful experience was the upselling of products. I assume as a student you have no choice.

I had a once in a lifetime transformative hair experience with a student at Douglas J Institute in Ann Arbor named Brooklynn Butler. Brooklynn worked nothing less than a true miracle on what I thought was a complete lost cause after trying to grow out my silver/gray hair for quite sometime. She demonstrated such pure talent that appeared to come so instinctually and naturally and she executed that with such precision as well as grace and warmth. I got a facial with Rebecca R and it was so amazing, I almost fell asleep! I felt relaxed and at the end felt so rested and my skin feels great! She made sure to be aware of my sensitive skin and worked with it, not against it.
I came in a few days ago to get a haircut and I had a wonderful experience! Takara was timely, professional, and personable. She explained each step she was taking and made sure that I liked the length she was cutting to. My hair feels so much healthier and the products smelled amazing. Would definitely come back!
Overall it was a mostly relaxing experience, my stylist was friendly and professional. However, my highlights did NOT turn out well, they are barely blonde in front, very brassy and MUCH lighter blonde in back underneath,and my haircut is awkward and in need of fixing. The instructors should have stepped in to help.The cut/ style and color was not what was asked for, neither was the price. I understand sometimes services end up costing more than when scheduled, but the client should be consulted or informed before it is done. A+ atmosphere D- outcome
I had the pleasure of having Haylee do my hair last Wednesday and I can honestly say it was one of the best hair experiences Ive ever had! From the moment I walked in, I received a warm welcome and felt heard about my hair goals. This was my first time coming to the Aveda Institute and Id highly recommend their services. Autumn gave me my first facial and she did such a great job! She was very knowledgeable, answered any questions I had and anything she wasn’t sure about she asked the educator. They warned me of potential problems with meds and waxing and gave me opportunities to skip or continue. Loved how relaxing and just kind she was to chat with during. HAYLEE ROETHLISBERGER WAS AMAZING!!! I went in for simple blond highlights, expecting them to come out underwhelmingly, but Haylee surpassed all my expectations!!! She understood exactly what I wanted even better than I did!!! There was so much dimension and complexity, and it looked SO NATURAL. I left jumping with excitement because of how amazing they were!!! Last week, I had a phenomenal facial & wax service with Gabriella koester! she was professional, kind, and her passion for esthetics is evident! She was very attentive while I was explaining my concerns/ goals with my skin & took the time to give suggestions for products that would work well for my skin. I had the best experience! I made an appointment 4 weeks in advance took time off of work for my appointment and 15 minutes before was called and told they had to cancel because the student was running behind. Then I couldnt get an appointment made for another two weeks. I just find it interesting that customers have to let the salon know 24 in advance in the case of cancelling, but I can be told 15 minutes in advance after I had already gone through all the trouble of getting to the salon and thats fine.
I had my first ever facial done by Clara and she was absolutely amazing! Super thorough explaining all the products beforehand, gentle and made for a very relaxing experience. I will definitely be coming back and following Clara to where she goes next! Thanks so much Clara!
The student colored and cut my hair recently. The color was nicely done. However, the haircut was horrible. The right lower back is extremely short while the left side was left long. I just wanted a trim, but my hair was cut too short and it’s now uneven. The student is learning and I understand that. But, why the supervisor didn’t check my haircut and try to fix it? The student asked the supervisor to check on me so Leslie, the supervisor should’ve checked if the haircut was acceptable. To whom it concerns, I believe it’s the supervisor’s job to make sure the haircut is corrected if mistakes are done. Horrible experience! I will never ever get a haircut again at this place.
I was here for my first visit today and couldnt be more pleased with my experience! Alexis F did an amazing job with my waxing! She was very professional, very sweet, and very gentle! She also tinted my eyebrows and eyelashes. She was very helpful and knowledgeable about helping me choose a product from the store after the appointment also! I will definitely be back to see her soon for a facial and other services!

I did not have a great experience here. The girl cutting my hair was very sweet and did a great job, made a few mistakes here and there but I by no means expect the stylists to be perfect as they are learning and you get what you pay for, I am happy to be patient with them and allow them to learn on me. My real issue was with the instructor. When she came to check on my hair she barely acknowledged me yet seemed very high energy, she then went to check my hair after my trim was complete, took the comb and I know that experienced stylists are usually a little bit rough and I can handle that but literally ripped a huge chunk out of my hair with her comb after tugging on it for a few seconds. Quite honestly, more painful than uncomfortable. and very inconsiderate towards a guest, especially when making an impression on a future stylist. That didnt feel good. After blow dry, I just had a question about my hair because there was a huge difference in length when looking at it from the back. she comes over and I ask her to take a look -- being very vocal about the fact that it might be from the way Im looking at it or the way its styled and not something that my stylist did incorrectly. She comes up to me and immediately says: well your legs are crossed and just overall being very unkind towards my simple inquiry. She then takes the scissors and cuts a huge chunk out of my hair messily. Overall, this may be a trust thing, but I did not feel very taken care of and was treated poorly by the instructor who is supposed to be setting a good example for students. I understand that those of us getting our haircut dont understand all of the ins and outs but being treated that way left me feeling worse than how I felt coming in. I think this place is great, just when you have an instructor who cares around.
I recently had a wonderful full body massage with Melany Lacoban. I was having a really stressful day & Melanie helped me relax and be in the moment with my body which greatly helped me process and release the stress and overwhelming feelings I had been experiencing. She identified areas of tension and pain to focus on in the consultation and gave extra attention to areas that I tend to hold stress. She has a calm presence and she guided me through the experience with compassion and great care. I highly recommend Douglas J Aveda Institute & the student who worked with me. I went here on 11/10 for a haircut with Jordan. I was donating 20 inches for Wigs for Kids and was so happy to receieve an amazing haircut and service. Jordan was incredibly kind and made sure every part of my cut was the same length and style. She was just as excited as I was for such a big change. I wish her all the best as she furthers her education at the salon!
You cant beat $34 for a formal updo. Its as nice a style as Id get done anywhere else and makes me feel special and pretty at a variety of work and family parties. Ive recommended the salon to friends getting married as well. The student stylists are overseen by instructors, so multiple people ensure you leave feeling happy with your appearance.
I had never been here before and was assigned Zee to give me a haircut and blowout. She did an AWESOME job and made sure to know exactly what I wanted before making any cuts. Zee was easy to talk to but didn’t make me feel like I needed to. She did a perfect job layering and face framing. I should have taken a picture after but this is my hair a few hours later after a nap.
I had the best haircut of my life the first time I went here, so this is really sad for me.My stylist cut off more than I asked for. Cut it jagged/lopsided - kept trying to fix it but didnt know how to cut my hair texture, so she just ended up taking off even more and its still lopsided.I get the mistake but I asked for like half an inch off, like a month or so of length - just touching the eyebrows. It was supposed to be just maintenance I also said to keep bangs frame, that was ignored. Those will take a long time to come back. Some of its still there though, just by mistake. My hair just looks so awkward now.Even after wetting it and trying to flatten it down, this isnt even close. Come on. :( Ive never felt worse about my hair, and honestly as someone who is already self-conscious, its got me feeling so depressed.Heres a before pic and two afters.Please avoid Taylor (blonde, younger, glasses) if you dont have straight hair.

I got a full-head color by Hannah D. and she was just amazing! She really helped fine-tune my color formula to adjust my existing hair undertones with what I wanted the final result to look like. She was meticulous and gentle with the application, and the resulting color came out great because of it! She even managed to blow-dry my frizzy hair smooth and it looked so nice, which not many stylists can do. Thanks for another great experience here!

Such a great experience sending my 15 yr old (cut and highlights) and 12 year old (cut) to Douglas J Aveda Institute! They came home feeling like superstars...they both commented on how special they felt after other hairdressers complimented their hair. My oldest didnt mind that the highlighting took a long time since it was her first time getting highlights. Im so happy Douglas J Aveda makes things like this affordable for our big family. The hair dresser ended up dyeing my hair black with brown highlights, I asked for red and black highlights. I was crying for I hated it. Told her and she asked how could she fix it, and I said you cant. For I wasnt going to sit there any longer to watch her Fry my hair to make it right. Never AGAIN.
I got a men’s cut from Josee Mccloskey and it has been the best cut I have ever received. Every time I go to a barber shop I end up with a botched cut, but with Josee she listened and gave me the exact cut I wanted and was nothing but cheerful and helpful and I definitely will be coming back.

I had so much fun working with Ranya to do hair and makeup for one of my wedding related events! She was extremely professional and kind, and made me feel extremely comfortable right before a big event in my life! She ensured that the makeup that she did matched the shades of my dresses, and also took the time to edit and correct any shades that we wanted to tweak at the end. For my hair, she washed, blow dried, curled, and styled it. I really appreciate that she took the time to curl and pin sets of my hair, give it enough time to set, and also add the hair pieces I had brought with me. Overall, I’d absolutely recommend her and plan on keeping her in mind for future events!

My 60-minute aroma massage with Brianna A. was fantastic! Brianna she did a fantastic job! She first checked to see if I had any tension/areas that needed attention and then cleared my massage with her instructor. She always used just the right amount of pressure but also asked from time to time to make sure everything was all good. Her technique was instrumental in loosening up my neck/shoulders which were super tight. The oils and creams are all premium Aveda products and they were great. In the end, I felt energized but at the same time super relaxed. Great massage and what a deal!
I saw Emma S. for a cut and tone treatment. I was a bit indecisive but she took my description and inspiration and did a perfect job giving me a perfect fall refresh for my hair! Her skill level is better than some professionals I’ve seen- she definitely seemed more advanced than a student! Thanks Emma!

Leslie easily gave me the best facial I have received so far by an Aveda student. I arrived 15 minutes late due to hang-ups at work and traffic, so she absolutely could have turned me away - after the week Ive been having I wouldnt have been surprised if that was my luck & I wouldnt have blamed her one bit. Not only did she still take the appointment, but she took extra care to make sure my skin looked amazing when I walked out and that my mood had done a 180. She is clearly knowledgeableabout esthetics, and gave me great tips throughout. My facial with Leslie was the highlight of my week & the positive experience I needed to get back on track. Wherever she ends up next - they will be extremely lucky to have her.
My student was Colton and he was amazing! Very careful and concerned with getting it right. He asked his instructor (Rue) for assistance whenever he was unsure, rather than risking messing up my hair. It really is the best haircut I have gotten in years! Colton was also gentle and and attentive during my shampoo and Botanical treatment. Several different folks offered me coffee or water throughout my time there. Overall a great experience and I will be back!

I saw Danielle Livorsi today and her service was holistically incredible. Not only did she have excellent people skills, but her talent and savvy for client satisfaction was remarkable. I went in for a simple haircut and she exhibited a high attention to detail, made sure everything was to my liking, and went above and beyond to make me feel happy walking out of the salon. For example, she asked how I would like my hair styled and I said “whatever is easiest for you” anticipating receiving a simple blow dry, which I would have been perfectly happy with. She instead chose to beautifully curl my hair, investing more time in her client than was ever asked of her. I would recommend Danielle to anyone.

Ive had my hair cut twice with Julia D. and she has done a fantastic job both times. I recently had a 90 min. massage and a haircut. Brazil was my massage therapist and she was incredible! Honestly the best massage I’ve had in a long time. I am often very tight in my upper back/neck so I prefer deep tissue. Brazil checked with me several times that the pressure level was good. And she found all the tight spots and worked through them. I definitely will try to book another one with her before she graduates!McKenna R. did a great job on my haircut too! The staff was all friendly. Place was very clean. All around good experience and so affordable!

What a wonderful experience! I am VERY picky about my hair, and Emily cut and styled my hair perfectly! It had been about a year since I had my hair cut and needed one really badly. She was easy to talk to, efficient, and made me feel like I wasnt at a school, but at a salon.Just FYI, if you do go to Douglas J Aveda Institute, you are getting a hair treatment by students studying the trade. So, it might take longer than if you were at a formal salon. They make sure they take time to explain to their teachers what they plan on doing with their customers hair and have their teachers assess the final product. The time is a learning experience for the student, a hands-on assessment, and a chance for a teacher to make any adjustments. Im happy to say that Emily received high praise for her cut and style. When Emily finishes her studies, I plan on visiting her to get my hair done regularly... and I live an hour away.Take a chance on these students, they work hard. I am so happy I went to the institute and was able to have my hair cut by a past student of mine. It is always a wonderful experience seeing my past middle and high school students thrive.

I got a haircut and botanical treatment done on my curly hair with Ranya and she did AMAZING! She took her time to make sure every detail was correct and made me feel so comfortable. So sad I only got to find out about her when she graduated, but will definitely be following her to get my haircut in the future at wherever she goes next!

But today I got my hair cut by Mary Margaret and she was absolutely amazing! She gave me so many wavy/curly hair tips and my hair turned out exactly how I wanted.

She helped me think through exactly what style to go with that would mix my bleached ends from several months ago with the dark hair growing in. She was excited to have a conversation with me about different looks and we landed on something Ive been very happy with as its grown out.
I went to get a haircut/blowout from Ariel and had the best experience! I was nervous because I have very curly hair and needed someone to rescue my hair with a good haircut. Ariel did such a great job and I was so impressed how much attention to detail she paid. My haircut was honestly the most even haircut I’ve ever got. She took her time with my blowout and hair cut which made me feel like she genuinely wanted me to have a great haircut/healthy hair! She also was very patient, gentle and understanding of my needs. I had a great experience receiving a massage from Michael Rosales! It was my very first massage. In our short (hour-long) session, he made a point to connect with me, hone in on my areas of stress and tension, and work with me to relieve them. I loved his gentle energy and how easy that made it to be vulnerable and trusting. He was knowledgeable, communicative, and effective!
I had an amazing facial done today with Kassie !!!❤️ she was so thorough with my consult and making sure what I wanted out of my facial was what I received! My skin is soooo bright and glowing🤩 She has such an amazing touch and is so knowledgeable in all of the products and treatments! I am so incredibly happy with the facial I had! She was absolutely amazing!
I had a gift card to use from a friend and decided to treat myself to my first facial! I had a great experience in booking the appointment online (even though it was pretty last-minute) and received prompt, professional service. LaShonda took great care of me--in addition to being patient and thorough, she was clearly very knowledgeable and gave me some tips about what products to use (and what not to use) for my particular skin type. Allyson did a great job on my color retouch. She put pomade on my skin to prevent color staining. She put a towel around my neck to prevent water getting on my clothes. You would be surprised at how many stylists don’t do that. Also, she is fast. No sitting in the chair for hours. You are in and out. I highly recommend her.
Going to preface this by saying that I have gone to Aveda multiple times and enjoyed my experiences. I recently went for a balayage and although my service did not turn out as expected they got me in for a last minute redo and fixed it in time for my graduation pictures. Both of my students were lovely and super understanding, as was the instructor Ally. However, Im only leaving 3 stars because at my original appointment, I was left with a strand of hair that was obviously lighter than the rest--my student very politely pointed it out to me and offered to fix it in a future session. The reason for my review is due to the fact that before this, they notified their instructor, Shannon, who simply replied with she wanted to go lighter anyways and shrugged it off. I understand that this session did run a bit long and I did in fact ask for lighter hair given the service I requested, however any non-professional should know that I clearly didnt want one single lock sticking out like a sore thumb. This was just unprofessional and completely rude.
First time I have ever been here and my experience was AMAZING. I was able to book an appointment the same day online for a 90 minute facial with Mia T. Mia was absolutely fabulous and this was hands down the best facial I had ever received! She paid attention to every detail and was thorough throughout the entire 90 minutes. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a facial or any other beauty services to visit this place and ask for Mia T. One of my favorite things about this place is that they are open until 10pm so when I get off work I have plenty of time to schedule an appointment. Not to mention that because I had never gotten a facial before there was a special price and you get 10% off any service if you are a current student. My total bill came out to $44.10 for a 90 minute facial! The only critique I have about this place is they dont allow you to tip the students for the services they preform on you. Which, in my opinion, is unfair because at the end of the day even if they are students, they still should be eligible to receive tips for their hard work.
Emma was my stylist today! She did such a great job with my hair. I didn’t have any crazy requests, but the execution was perfect! I would highly recommend booking with Emma and I hope to return soon!
Ive gotten my hair cut there 6 times now and have never been disappointed. They even gave me a mohawk and it turned out great! Bang for your buck. And everyone is very nice. Students and teachers work together to make sure you are satisfied. Easy to make an appointment online or over the phone, and online you can actually pick which student does your hair if you have a preference. They can get you in really quickly too (24 hrs!). And they take walk-ins! (Edit: lately its been more like a week wait).It seems like a really good program. If I was someone interested in learning the hair styling field I think this would be a good one since you would get a lot of practice with all sorts of people. Its always busy and bustling when I go.
Matthew Foster was my stylist and he did absolutely amazing!! My hair was soft, and blown out perfectly. Definitely will be coming back! An amazing experience through and through!!
Joelle Dey gave me the best facial i’ve ever had, i loved all the aveda products as well, they didn’t make my sensitive skin react in any way and Joelle’s touch is amazing :)
I had the pleasure of getting a facial with a perfecting plant peel by Jennifer Marks today. I don’t know why it took me this long to book this service because it was AMAZING. I’ve had facials in the past, but it was nothing I would rush back to get; UNTIL NOW! Jennifer did an OUTSTANDING job. From start to finish it was flawless. She was very kind, informative and knowledgeable of what she was doing. I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I can’t wait to come back!I HIGHLY recommend the Douglas J Aveda Institute and will be back to see Jennifer before she graduates!!
This place is getting worse by every day. Their service is inconsistent since covid. Every single time there is some change and the facial’s actual time keeps decreasing. I don’t even know what I’m paying for. I paid extra for add on in a 90 minutes facial and all they did is an add on service pack for 10 minutes and then massage for 5 minutes that’s all. Rest is just time consuming activity. Ohh by the way in a 90 minute facial you get massage on your arms and feet while your face pack is getting dried. I got only one and also they soak your feet while doing consultations…I didn’t get that service either. They ask you about which oil aroma you feel like in the service…that didn’t happen either. I have been extremely unsatisfied with their service for sometime now but I keep giving them benefit of doubt but today I’m really done! Got daughter’s haircut done and her hair literally looks chopped. It looks like I chopped her hair with kitchen scissor and I’m not even exaggerating. It’s unprofessional and I’m so mad. Yes they did reschedule me for coming Saturday to redo her hair but she has a birthday party to attend tomorrow. Am I supposed to send her to party and school looking like that now! I might end up leveling up her hair because it looks unacceptable. What’s disappointing and shocking to me is that it was okayed by the instructor there. What are these people really doing! What a waste of time and money. I’m a woman with a kindergartener and a 8 months old baby. I don’t have time to keep driving for 45 minutes and go there to get their act together. It was as it is difficult for me to manage everyone’s timing and get things done. They totally ruined it for me.

My first experience at Douglas J. in Ann Arbor was very enjoyable and relaxing! My estititian Jacqueline went above and beyond my expectations. She took the time to go over my concerns and also recommended ways in which to help in my skin care routine. I also had an eyebrow tint which I was very happy with. I went for a 60 minute massage session (only $50) and by the end of the session I’ve decided I’m gonna return for massage every couple of weeks! My massage therapist was Brazil and she was amazing! Most of the times she guessed correctly the amount of pressure she needed to apply and she also was very good about asking for feedback. She’s really talented. The way the session is designed is very thorough - each group of my muscles received enough attention and I felt really relaxed and rejuvenated after the session!
Claire Cotter is extremely talented, professional, and super friendly! I had an AMAZING experience and the cut I received exceeded all of my expectations!! She listens to all of your hair concerns and preferences and works with you to achieve the look that you want! She keeps you in the loop with everything she does and Ive never felt more comfortable and trusting in a stylist like her! You can tell that she wants the best for the customer because of the amount of precision and detail she spends on the cut. Her peers and instructors definitely thought highly of her as well. If she werent a student and if I were allowed to, I would like to have tipped her and be a regular. Shes absolutely the best and Ive never loved my hair more!
I booked underarm waxing with Lainie and she did an amazing job. I felt comfortable with Lainie and she explained the process in great detail before moving forward with the waxing. I can’t wait to go back to have this service with her again
I’ve been coming to Aveda for my haircuts for 10+ years, both in Ann Arbor, MI and Knoxville, TN. I went in for a haircut today and the service was appalling. Unfriendly front desk staff, the student that cut my hair, Hannah, barely said a word to me. She did not get an instructor prior to starting the haircut, something I felt very uncomfortable with, as an instructor comes to check off on the service before the haircut begins, EVERY single time. I asked for the hair in the back to be slightly shorter than in front. By the end, the back was about an inch longer than the front, the exact opposite of what I asked for. Then an instructor came to check, and she was clearly annoyed at something (possibly my student due to how horrible my hair looked) and was extremely rough with the comb, it felt like she was scraping my head with a fork. She basically did my whole haircut because the student was incapable. At the end, there was no final evaluation with an instructor. Hannah did not ask how I wanted my hair styled and did not use any heat protectant before blow-drying. As I’ve been coming here for 10+ years, I’ve had many different experiences with different students and instructors. This was by and away the worst experience I’ve ever had with Aveda. I wish 0 stars was an option.
Absolutely horrible, my hair is ruined I can’t even sleep at night thinking about how I gust ruined my hair.
Went to get a bridal makeup trial and “was told well if you don’t like it you don’t have to come back” after being asked my opinion of my make up. As you can see in the picture this is not full coverage that she told me she did. My face is uneven and she forgot to fill in one of my brows. She also used lip stick and blush for my eye shadow?? Another student even told my stylist that I need more founds for full coverage.I will be taking my stylist advice and will not be returning.
I got a 60 minute facial by student Victoria T, and it was one of the best facials I’ve ever received, this was the first time I’ve ever fallen asleep during a facial. Her presence was so calming, she was very nice and respectful, she was very informative about what products she was using on my skin and she really listened to all of my concerns, she also gave great tips for home care. She made sure I was comfortable and she was very professional. I definitely recommend her for booking.Great job Victoria, I will see you again in 3 weeks!
Had my hair cut by Ranya- she was wonderful and cut it exactly like I was wanting! And, for all my fellow introverts, she let me set the pace of the conversation and was fine with quiet at times- love that!Highly recommend seeing her before she graduates soon!!
I have gotten 3 haircuts this semester from Ranya. The first time, I had long hair and needed a really big cut for a show I was in. She was so kind and while I was nervous about the chop, she made me feel beautiful and cared for. She was so kind and I loved my haircut. I went back 2 more times for trims because I fell in love with the first length. Every time I go to get my hair cut with Ranya, we have the most wonderful conversations and I always leave with a beautiful new haircut. She is the best and I would recommend her to every one.

We immediately clicked and talked, and she was fun yet professional, she gave me a great haircut, was able to listen to what i wanted, envision it, and bring it to life exactly how I wanted. She let me communicate with her how I wanted to give it a few changes, and I walked out poking and feeling beautiful. best experience i’ve had since beginning to come to this studio 3 years ago.

I reviewed a haircut I received here two weeks ago and am now reporting on my “spa day”! I had a facial with Aliyah and a massage with Brianna A. What a hidden gem this school is! Both women were professional and intuitive. They will, undoubtedly, go on to be masters in their craft. I love that I get to be part of their process. Their instructors were excellent. Knowledgeable and encouraging. It’s really a great place! I’ve already booked my next massage!
Always got my hair cut here since college even though its a 50 minute drive from me and today (after already confirming my appointment) when I showed up to the salon the front desk said they cant do my haircut because they have a demo day and forgot to call and told me to reschedule to next week. I had already shown up and now Ive got to drive all the way back, the least they could have done is given me a call. I never leave reviews but this was not a good experience at all.
Came here for a balayage last week and saw Mathew. I’ve never been so happy with my hair! He also gave me a great recommendation for shampoo and other products.
I just had Emma Racey with her awesome instructor Allie color my hair today! What a great experience! Emma is so talented & she’s just coming out of the blocks! She was warm and friendly & made sure that her work was moving along perfectly with Allie Checking in! I got hi & lowlights and as her instructor says “you nailed it”. She really did! All the students, instructors and staff are really friendly and you certainly can’t beat the price! They even provided me some education on slowly making my hair a little darker with each visit! I’ll be back!
