Service was GREAT! I had an amazing time and met some really nice people here too. I ordered Mai tai, sex on the beach, strawberry margarita and lemon drop shots and they were all on point. So good.. it is a mix crowd. Also DJ played great songs and loved that it was from 80s to hip hop to pop to edm lol it was great tbh lol.. also only thing about the DJ he said yes he would play a song by an artist but didn’t. So that was not cool lol other than that, it was fun!$5 cover charge$10 drinks and shots each
We didn’t experience any negativity and the bar staff were friendly and fairly attentive. They offered beers to try when we weren’t sure also. However, we just didn’t feel the atmosphere was all it was hyped up to be.Everyone seemed happy and having fun in their own tables with friends and the singer was good, but it felt dead at times.Drinks were reasonably priced and we were served pretty much instantly. It’s only one floor up but there is a lift if you need it.
Hulas Gay Bar and Nightclub, came here on a Saturday and cover is only $5. Parking is terrible the lot across the street is open 24 hours for the zoo however you have to pay $1.50 per hour all night club closes at 2am you do the math. Consistent patrolling so you must pay don’t be too confident cuz they do check. There is street parking if you are lucky it’s free after 10pm otherwise $3.00 per hour.Saturday night is classic video play there is a dance floor if you feel like dancing just go for it who cares if people don’t dance this what you came here for. Lots of locals and groupies if you’re tourist be prepared to just do your own thing. Drinks are galore so get your drink on.In case you get thirsty for water they have water as gratuity. Servers are very nice do check up on you make sure you get your drink on lol. 😆
The bartender must be new. I waited at the bar for 20 minutes before he asked for my order. I had already ordered 2 drinks previously but he didn’t realize he already waited on me. While I’m waiting , another party comes in which was there when I came in, he waited on them before me.Then another guy comes up to the bar and he asks for his order before me. Graciously, he told the bartender I was there first.I think this bartender should find a new job. I think management might want to consider finding a new bartender.
Food was exactly what you expect from a bar. Prices will allow you order more to drink. Even their drink specials are great. Defo recommend for anyone who wants to kick back and relax. O! Get the Chicken Pesto! You won’t regret it!The view is amazing and the waiters (we had Drew and David- I went back twice haha ) are really friendly and very patient and accommodating! It is really COVID-19 safe- they do a temperature check and gently remind you in case you forget to put your mask back on if you leave your table (there very friendly about it!)Lastly- the music coupled with the music videos had me in good vibes all morning long. Can’t wait until I can dance on the floor again! Thank you again David and Drew for making my stay very welcome!
Lee is amazing. Be sure to try and get her as your server if you can. She is so friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. One of the best servers I have had. Hulas Bar & Lei Stand does a great job with dining and drinks during covid times. All food is served on single-use plates with single-use utensils for safety precautions. Nightly drink specials. Salads are good. Mezze plate was also good. My only piece of constructive criticism is the shrimp said they were mesquite and they were plain shrimp. Other than that, everything was good. Service was attentive and friendly. Fun music. Big open wall of windows for good air flow.
This place was a lot of fun. The local we were with said its the best drink deal around. All the bartenders were really nice -our server was great and had The. Best. Wig. We got a pitcher of mai tai and then we were on our way -- it was pretty good. The decor was nice. I liked that it was open air and that there was a view of the beach. The general atmosphere is great.
Great atmosphere! For locals and tourists! Pool table plenty areas for sitting like bar, open view, high tables and reg tables; team is very friendly. It is part of a hotel structure and it’s very safe. Funny bathroom… urinal for shy guy, open Minded and the for single… just a funny stuff if you think about the decals on the floor… will be back
We made reservations for this place because it’s always pack . We were at this place until it closed and Jonny was super patient with us . I’m a slow drinker and eater and I didn’t feel rushed . The place is taking precautions during COVID and I appreciate it . They also have me my first lei . The have daily specials . Towards the end of the night we were asked if we could move because a reservation was here for a certain time and the group wanted our specific stable . The person that asked was so nice but i feel like since they don’t have limitations in our times then why should be move for other people . She was very polite but the people that were tying to take our table could have offered to pay for our tab
The waitress(Lee) got our order wrong, ok it happens, we are restaurant owners and servers of MANY years . The bartender though, Justin , was so exceedingly rude and demeaning! When we said the mojito he made was not to our liking he -with an insulting tone- asked if we knew what a Mojito was!!! YES - we recited the correct ingredients for a mojito- he couldn’t say anything to that. So then, with the same rude disdainful tone rolled his eyes at me told us we had ordered the Reuben after which we said no we had had specifically ordered the beef sliders. Being in the restaurant business, you never should treat your customers like that. Then night before our bartender was Drew and he was lovely. But, Justin should not be dealing with the public. Then to add insult to injury refused to take the drink which we did not drink off the check say if you took one sip you have to pay for it!.
The previous review by Virginia Ever is totally wrong. I was sitting adjacent to her party. The waitress got their order correct but a member of her party went up to the service counter and took someone elses food order which was different food. Customers are supposed to wait for food to be brought to their table. The waitress then brought them the food they had ordered. They then complained that it was Tina which they had not ordered. The rkitchrn doesnt t even serve tuna. The waitress also brought them the mojito that was ordered. They said it wasnt a mojito which it was. Her party was very rude to staff.
Definitely a spot you want to check out when visiting Oahu. It’s labeled as a gay bar and while it is… it definitely has a mixed crowd. Probably due to the location and random heteros probably just coming in for a drink not knowing it’s a gay bar lol but besides that it has a chill vibe and good music. The drinks were strong but maybe a little on the sweet side. I ordered a blue Hawaiian. Limited but good selection of draft beers. Service was decent. Didn’t try any food.
Not so gay :(, i reckon a symptom of it being in a hotel? not sure it’s the best angle for them. overall alright though, however the host boy darren I believe had a bit of an attitude/ aloofness, kinda off putting, definitely not warm like people usually are in hawaii, overall wouldn’t go back, there are much better options around
Good place!! Wife and I️ had fun here. Not knowing it was a LGBTQ friendly (I️ haven’t found a place that wasn’t here in Hawai‘i!) obviously always get the occasional stares. BUT! Great atmosphere, we came on a Monday right before happy hour ended and it was open mike night.. for karaoke kind of thing? Food was ok.. more like microwaves nachos but drinks was good. Koa was our bartender and I️ didn’t like my mojito. He happily took it and made me a Bloody Mary. You have to walk inside a hotel and take the stairs up to the actual bar. Just follow the signs!!
Service is usually very great but one night the guy working the door decided he didnt want to let me in.
Lee was absolutely an awesome person. Lee took time out to tell us about top spots in the area, and really went above and beyond to make my group feel welcome to the island. The crowd on a Tuesday night wasn’t the largest, and the music was more gloomy than uplifting. Otherwise come here and definitely ask for Lee.
This is my go-to bar in Waikiki. The drinks are good. Prices reasonable. Bartenders great.Jonny and Drew daytime bartenders are great.Trevor deserves special recognition. I observe how people work in bats/restaurants. Trevor hustles—he probably poured 2 drinks for the amount the other two bartenders pour combined. This is a great place and I highly recommend it.
Filthy staff downgrading a bar that was once amazing and a place to be for everyone. You can tell from the reviews of previous months of rude staff… we used to come here all the time and even had our wedding after-parties. Now there is a cranky bouncer (1/27PM) that is discriminating, and exclusive and “doesn’t need to explain why” a person is not allowed and calls cops (who btw were very nice and recognized this bar has gone downhill).A private property has every right to refuse service, but I didn’t think Hula was a place to be exclusive, homophobic, racist and discriminating. Hope they train their staff or hire the right people.
We were staying at the very affordable Waikiki Grand and decided to have a cocktail there before returning to our rooms. Though there were empty seats at the bar, when we tried to sit there, the bartender quickly put a reserved sign out. The waitress who had directed us to the bar said we could sit for a short time at a nearby table (that had a reserved sign) but the bartender yelled at her. Rude bartender, dirty place, and obviously not inclusive.
Total queen bar! Not lesbian friendly at all! Never got any service the entire 45 min I was there! Only if u come with or are a male queen do you get service! Alex never bothered to greet me or say a thing to me when I left! Avoid this so called gay bar unless you are gay, women not respected! Their menu stinks too...
I love this place. I prefer it for lunch over dinner. The staff is super friendly and the views of the beach and zoo are marvelous. We went on a Friday night on this trip and enjoyed a couple beverages. We were very sad the DJ was terrible and played a random selection of genres. Im a professional dancer and couldnt really dance and enjoy the music. Aside from that its a great time !
Not family friendly. Our 11 month old was refused entry (we are a rainbow family and didn’t expect to be turned away from a gay establishment - at least not during the day at 5pm).
I normally love this place but recently something has changed. I love going because it’s relaxed and just a great place to be for some who is sober because they have great music and games to play. My girlfriends and I visit this place because like I said it’s great for a sober time.Unfortunately we were profiled by security. Followed by a security guard and randomly asked to check our bags because they had reason to believe we had liquor on them. A few of my girlfriends several months sober and we were going to the bathroom a lot because I was have a female issue. The security guard checked our bags and found NOTHING. I understand they have a job but don’t target females because they have to go to the bathroom a lot.We felt so uncomfortable because security continued to watch us.I’m just bummed because I use to feel safe and comfortable here.
Normally a chill hangout in Waikiki - I actually work at a bar pt and I think the staff was drunk or something, I’ve never experienced such hostility:Walked in mid-afternoon with water and the bartender shrieked across the room that they have a ‘no outside drink policy’. Which is fine, though multiple guests at the bar had personal yetis and water bottles out on the table already. I was asking if I could dump it and have him refill it with water and he maniacally shouted ‘Oh you want to come in here with an attitude too’. Absolutely Bizarre.
Great live music, Great Location, We visit once a week for drinks! Excellent Drinks…
During my recent visit to Hulas Bar, I was impressed by the lively atmosphere and the excellent drink selection. However, the experience was marred by an inconsistent door policy. My friend, who is straight, faced difficulties in gaining entry, which seemed contrary to the bars usually inclusive and welcoming spirit. This inconsistency in welcoming all guests, regardless of their background, is an area I hope Hulas will address to ensure a universally enjoyable experience for all patrons.
Having lived in the neighborhood for years and been here 100+ times, this pains me to write… this place has majorly gone downhill. The food has always been terrible and bathrooms nasty, but usually a great spot for pau hana with friends. Today, I walked in with a water bottle and got an extremely unfriendly welcome from the bartender who yelled at me for bringing in an “outside beverage” (again, it was a water bottle.. at 3pm on a hot day). Besides there being many better ways to handle this situation, many other patrons had their own water bottles with them but he seemed obsessed with ours. Not sure what’s happened here lately, but you’ll see MANY one star reviews if you sort to newest. This place is not what it once was, and it appears to be staff related. Where’s your Aloha?+1 extra star for all the good times I’ve had in the past
We visited on 9/23/2023. The waitress was sick and losing her voice, but still serving drinks. I watched her use bare hands to squeeze lime in drinks and then put the lime in the drink and prepare garnishes for drinks. Im assuming she put the straws in drinks too. We left immediately after that. Hoping we dont get sick after visiting. 🤢
Always have a great time at Hulas especially on Thursdays for VJ/DJ dancing and drink specials. Their pitchers are small but for the mixed drinks especially it’s a great deal. Love checking out the view of Diamondhead (Le’ahi) here. I am an LGBTQ+ ally so always happy to see inclusive spaces. The food isn’t my favorite bar food ever but the duck quesadilla is yummy!
Recently went here with a group of friend and had the worst experience I’ve had since living in Hawaii. 0/10 do not recommend this place whatsoever. Security guard profiled us the minute we walked in, standing behind us. Not to mention the whole atmosphere is kinda boring. Security guard should have retired 20 years ago!! So rude and aggressive for absolutely no reason. If they want to improve this place first step is to get rid of that guy👎 Please save your time and money and steer clear from this place
One of the bartenders rolled his eyes at me when I ordered a drink. And we got harassed by a naked drunk straight woman who clearly should have been cut off several drinks ago, showing that the staff is not on top of its operations.Nice physical atmosphere, I guess.
Very chill bar with a pool table. Mai Tai was awesome and not too expensive
I’ve personally only ever been to Hulas after 7pm, but none the less, it’s a fantastic atmosphere for inclusivity and partying. You can hang out at a table and chat, it’s quiet enough; or you can shoot pool with your friends; or you can get sloshed and dance until close. The bartenders are polite, handsome, and quick at mixing. Kama’aina and military ID’s get in free, otherwise it’s a 5$ cover. DJ is a master, always plays hits that everyone knows. There’s a small dance floor but nobody will judge you for your dance moves. Please keep in mind that this is a safe space and you should be mindful about whether you’re intruding. You’ll catch me and my friend group here every Saturday night.
I must say the bar tenders are absolutely amazing! My experience became terrible when I had an Encounter with the cook! Let me be clear we are very welled traveled people that have been to Hawaii numerous times and patronize this bar every time! We are always excited to patronize small business. We order a few cocktails and food the bill was $250. So you hope to be treated with a little respect. Now this bar is located on the second floor of a hotel that’s located two blocks from where we are staying. So we order a very large amount of food and the cook name( Bill) was extremely nasty to me because I asked for to go bags! His responds was people normally eat here so I don’t have any bags” I had never heard anything so foolish in my life! A restaurant that do not have to go bags. His demeanor was so nasty and dismissive that I didn’t understand Why? was it because I was black(because this is the treatment we normally encounter) or was it because he is just a nasty person and this is how he treats everyone. being a business owner. I know that customer service is everything the way you treat Your customers is very important. Hawaii is a very small island and it doesn’t have a lot of accommodations for the gay community so being a gay man you want to patronize a gay establishment! It is truly sad that we are living in times where a customer is not valued or appreciated at all. I hope this review helps someone to be aware of what they may encounter and make the owners aware of the staff that he or she employees.
This was the worst bar in Waikiki because of the security personnel. After our group had drinks there, we waited at the front steps for our uber. While waiting, the security personnel forced us to get away from the steps and he made us wait on the sidewalk and even said to just wait across the street. When we asked why he was doing that to our group even though we were just waiting for our uber, he said he doesnt care. Its pathetic service coming from a bar that should have showed hospitality to the guests.
This is nice place but the open mic nite just got weird and totally misogynistic. The owner should be more discriminating.
Im reviewing my earlier review, because calmer heads prevail & Aussies are hot headed and drinkers & shoot from the hip.I have been coming to Hawaii since 1992. Hulas was originally a tropical outdoor venue with an amazing fig tree. Aussies came, our dollar was good, we were treated decently.Over the years Hawaii has been increasingly local-centric. Tourists (who pay a premium) are treated with contempt & disdain. There is a local ethnotricity concentrated on the mix that is Hawaii...south pacific/ Japanese/blasian...as on the mainland in Democratic states white caucasians are disdained. As a white Australian with an older partner I found your establishment racist, ageist and homophobic to different cultural interpretations of gay.Over the 30 years Ive been supporting your tourist industry Im done. White caucasians should steer clear, especially Aussies. There are much better, service friendly establishments on the Island
Great atmosphere means everything. Very queer-friendly. Live entertainment was pretty amazing! Staff was lively, knew regulars, and never pestered. Prices are super reasonable, especially for Waikiki. I enjoyed several beers and a Mediterranean plate. Will return.
You are missing out if you dont stop here. Open till 2 am. Amazing bartenders and vibes.
Went here on a Saturday night with my husband and enjoyed the drinks and live music. Pretty chill and not too loud or crowded before 9, which my hard of hearing husband really appreciated. Got understandably busier after 9, but the waitstaff came by on a regular basis to check if we needed more drinks, and we still had a great time. I usually dont like bars, but Id come back to this one!
Slow Sunday afternoon - walked in and sat at bar. Only a few other people sitting around bar, neither of the bartenders acknowledged us upon sitting down. One bartender came to help the guy sitting next to us twice still without looking at us, then walked to the other side of the bar to chat with other guests and work on service well drinks. Sat another 5 minutes with no acknowledgement and finally walked out. As a bartender in a busy city, the lack of awareness and/or straight up ignoring guests is baffling.
Omg , it seems I’m not the only one here recently visiting Hulas from mainland who has had a horrible experience, they used to be much different, it appears that the staff are not LGBTQ friendly whatsoever now and are more of a mainstream club that wants to drive away that community. Lead bartender who feels uncomfortable because you’re sitting at bar , order 2 drinks in a span of couple hours will cut you off and hand you water and say you’re done . If you are too flamboyant or don’t perhaps fit their mainstream clientele they will refuse to serve you , and that’s after speaking politely to the general manager on duty. Not LGBTQ friendly at all, sorry 😢
Is there a zero star rating.. I’ve gone to Hula’s several times, its always been a fun vibe and atmosphere. But this last time I was there, I had ordered 1 drink, bartender was good. So after an hour I went to order another drink with a friend. It was not busy, so the bouncer would know when I arrived, how much I had to drink. I was immediately interrupted by the bouncer who said I was cut off, because I was “too drunk”. I’m clumsy for sure, they need to make sure their bouncers know the difference between clumsy and drunk.ALSO for Hula’s to hire a bouncer who is not LGBTQIA+ supportive. The guy called my friend ‘queer’ this is a place where the gay community should be able to be comfortable in. Not being called names and judged.I’m really appalled by the way the night unfolded with police and everything. Its shocking the lack of respect. I will never go back to Hula’s, its left a bad feel with me and my friends.
Been here twice so far, first night it was cute, but the 2nd night we went definitely changed my mood of the place. The older lady walking around was absolutely rude. We thought we lost our card and we asked one of the barbacks or what ever he was hey can you see if she still has it or not. She came out and accused us of saying she stole the card, which we never said only we lost it. The lady came up and started going off on us even though we said we are so sorry we found it. She said “Dont ever accuse a woman of stealing” or something like that and it was a shock to have this experience as we literally said to the guy, we lost it. Her approach and the way she came at us was very uncalled for and very disrespectful.. Im actually very turn off from this bar and probably wont go back.
Bartenders were amazing.Guy at the entrance was great.Security needs to get their priorities adjusted. There’s a serious issue if I’m getting blocked from re-entering because I’m, according to him, “too drunk,” when all I did was help a girl and her ACTUALLY drunk friend exit safely. There’s a serious issue when I can’t just talk to a bartender when a friend thinks he left his wallet and all I want to do is check to be sure because he can’t get into his hotel without it.I’m not sure what that guy had against me, but it was groundless. I literally did NOTHING to indicate I was a nuisance and could not function like a decent human being. All I did was try to help people and got punished for it.
Is Drew a new employee? Even if he is a new employee Ive never had an interaction like this before in all my life. It was odd. Ive been coming to this bar for a long time(vacation every 9 months.) Everyone is so nice, but Drew. My first interaction with him was like someone telling me I should sit at the back of the bus. Drew is a back server or water boy. He took my drink order around 12:30 a.m. and when I asked for iced water to back it he pointed towards the entrance and said iced water was over there. I dont know what Drews issue was, but he needs a sit down. We never had an argument or anything like that. He was just annoyed I asked for ice water with my drink. Noah, Matt, and the other inked up bartender were attentive, professional, and welcoming. I dont know what was going on with Drew and I dont need to know. Hes not a good fit.
Coming to this bar was literally the worst experience I have had in Hawaii.I went on a Monday night which was open mic night for karaoke and tonight they had people playing music and also people who were displaying comedian acts.Long story short there was an older white woman saying all type of racist jokes against Black people to the crowd for about 10 minutes I sat there and did nothing but eventually I walked up towards the bar and sat in front of her to see if she would continue with her racist jokesAnd she did?!! the employees told me I was being rude even though she was saying racist jokes and I was the only black person in the bar!!I spoke to the manager before I left and it seemed as if he enjoyed the show, he had a smirk on his face (short asian men with tattoos) as if he wanted to laugh as I expressed to him how disrespectful all of the woman jokes wereI was with a group of people (none of them were black) who noticed the disrespect of the comedian and we all left abruptly. The manager literally did nothing to stop her act and let her continue with her show!
Go elsewhere-rude staff and management. Worst bar experience I’ve had. Do yourself a favor and spend your money somewhere where service is prioritized. Bartenders are annoyed when taking orders and most drinks are overpriced. Guests are encouraged to use bathrooms downstairs as theirs aren’t in working order. Disgusting.
Cool and chilled club and drinks place but we had problems with the bar staff. They were quite rude when we ordered drinks and didnt seem happy we didnt put a tab on. They also told us not to stand at the bar. One night we put a tab on and got double charged for it. But overall the place is fun for a drink and boogie. Downside is just the bar staff.
Went twice in the week we were visiting and it happened to be open mic night each time. Same lame comedian both nights and the singing acts were terrible, an old straight couple and someone who always had just one more song. Drinks were prompt and ok. I just didnt get the whole vibe...I would say it was a gayless experience.
I enjoyed the view and drinks. The bartender never heard of the drink we ordered. We have him the ingredients and he made it even better than the original. We did notice it was a place closer for the LGBTQ ... but you dont have to be. I wanted so much to try their food s it looked very delicious. However... we just ate prior. I do recommend this place and call ahead to make reservations. If I ever return. Ill be back for sure!
The grossest nachos imaginable. Ewww. Slathered in process cheese sauce. And not even good taco chips. Don’t call it cheddar cheese cause it’s not! The comedians and singer were so bad I was embarrassed for them.
This was a very friendly and fun bar to go too. Amazing atmosphere with a great vibe. They have affordable drinks and play awesome music. The crowd really shows up around midnight and everyone seems to get along and talk to each other. We will definitely go back and recommend this spot to anyone!
It seems like Hulas Bar has taken the term local watering hole a bit too literally—instead of serving the locals, they seem to be watering down the sense of community with their preferential treatment. Maybe they should offer a stank face-free happy hour for a change! My recent visit to Hulas Bar left me feeling disappointed, primarily due to the subpar customer service and the apparent preference given to certain customers. What was once a lively local hangout seems to have transitioned into a tourist-oriented establishment, leaving little room for the community it used to serve. One of the most disheartening aspects of my visit was the attitude displayed by the bartenders. Their stank face expressions and lack of enthusiasm made it evident that they were not genuinely invested in providing a positive experience for their patrons. To make matters worse, it was quite noticeable that they seemed to prioritize serving white customers over others. This biased treatment creates an unwelcoming environment and contradicts the principles of inclusivity and equal service. This shift towards catering primarily to tourists has diminished the sense of community that once thrived at Hulas Bar. Locals, who were once regulars, now feel neglected and unwelcome. It is unfortunate to witness the erosion of a bar that was once a gathering place for the neighborhood, where people could connect and enjoy their time together.
LOVE IT!!Truly is a fun and friendly place cocktails, food, live performers, dragshows, and dancers.During the day meet cool locals and At night it becomes a Bar/Club the music can be a bit on the low side to respect noise violations. The pitcher specials are a good option as well as the double shots for like a Dollar or two more.
I like the vibe in here ! Music isnt deafening and you can actually hold a conversation. Good atmosphere, however I must agree with 80% of the other reviews, the staff members are pretty rude.. whats the reason for that?Theres one bar and it takes forever to get a drink. . perhaps open tubs?👁️👄👁️
One of the most gayest, racist places Ive been on this island. They copy black and brown music but the moment black or brown ppl start dancing without shoes, they kick you out. All those gringos are definitely on a power trip. Especially a white girl or boy and not even from here are so disrespectful. And forget the dj, he just play Repetitive music.
If you sing Jesus music at karaoke night, you should get kicked out. Not even capping. Back to back songs and I just walked out with 5 other people. People want to have fun, get entertained and sing along not listen to Joshua 69:420.
The hospitality at this place was wonderful! I met the infamous David from the harsh negative reviews and he was totally cool and welcoming. Dont believe his bad reviews. Hes a cool guy working in an alcohol fueled public service venue. He introduced me to a couple of people and we had an excellent conversation while he poured drinks.
The bar has a nice ambiance with different acts performing through out the night (bands, singers, comedians open mic) the only downside is the bar staff are quite rude so was quite off putting to return there while we were on the island!
Terrible experience. I went there with my girlfriend and friend and was verbally abused and threatened by a suspicious man. He was lingering and lurking by us after repeated attempts to avoid him. He was clearly not straight minded and at one point offered us drugs and demanded that we buy him a drink after sitting at “his table”.After alerting our server, he was able to bring security/cops to escort him 15 minutes later. He told us that since the man didn’t do anything illegal they couldn’t do anything about it. The manager was insensitive and approached our table with little empathy and said the best he could do was call us a cab if we left immediately even though we were in the middle of our drinks. Poor customer service and not a safe environment. Wouldn’t go again.
Place is great to relax, thats is carefree and also great to grab a drink. Nightlife wise the DJ plays weird music sometimes hints the not 5 star. Drinks are on point. Has a wide variety of drinks and people that come to the establishment. Overall great quality drinks. Has a view overlooking the street on the second floor.
The bald bartender is very rude and lazy walked by me multiple times without taking my order I finally asked for a third time for a drink and he banned me for the day. Not returning anytime soon.
The view is stunning with a good vibe, the video DJ is great, live music is bleh. The mix drinks however were awful. Will be going back soon to try top shelf and will edit this post.
Yummy drinks and great service. As someone of Native Hawaiian ancestry, I find the get leiʻd gimmick, the sexualization and reduction of an important cultural practice, off putting. Definitely tainted the experience a bit.
The drinks are great just what we wanted the bartenders very friendly the facilities very clean and tidy but the dj’s music is very old fashioned, I asked him for a song and he told me he couldnt play it if he didn’t have the actual video to the song .
Its ok.The clientele is all over 50. The live music is just ok. Theres a cover charge. The drink selection is limited. No drink specials or cocktails. Only three beers on tap. Basically what you would find at ABC but double the price. The food is ok.
Been coming to this place five nights in a row . Decided to finally order food. My only request was to sub salad for fries as I’m allergic to certain ingredients in the salad. Waiter SY refused to do that — didn’t even offer to ask the manager. FrlmHis attitude it seemed he could care less about the patrons experience. We were going to continue getting drinks and food bt since there was zero appreciation to our business at a place we picked as our primary hang out spot we closed out and left. Not very smart as we would’ve spent much more money and time there . Subbin a salad for chips / fries is such a small request any other place would have no problem accommodating. So much for customer appreciation
A nice atmosphere and pleasant staff. Drinks are reasonably priced and the music was all fun gay hits. The crowd was a little older but people were friendly for the most part. The only problem was that it was a little dead but I’d imagine that was just because I came on a Monday.
Service was great, atmosphere was great, the view was awesome, good drinks for a reasonable price. My husband and I will be back.
We came for the drag show and had a great time, everyone was friendly and the show was great! The drinks are crazy cheap, which is never a bad thing. Definitely check it out while bar hopping, a good place to start the night and get a good buzz on without spending too much $$
Bartenders could of cared less. Manager was rude. Disallowed us from entering on second day and used an excuse that someone in group had too much to drink. Not remotely correct, unacceptable, and will not return. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere.
Our bartender was Joey. He was very polite, and professional. I enjoy bringing my friends, and coworkers for industry shots! This is a good, fun vibe to relax in with no drama 😊
I went last night and nobody was at the entrance to receive guests so I came in to sit at the counter and one of the workers (I knew it because of his shirt) with a very bad attitude and tone (almost shouting on me) told me You can not sit down here several times I asked why and he kept only saying the same. It was very awkward and disrespectful, then the lady who was supposed to be at the entrance came back and told me that I needed like check in before but no I left. It was my first time going to a gay bar and had that very shady experience. That guy need to know how to treat customers his salary depends on that.
We arrived on a Sunday evening to discover two bartenders, whom were heavily inked on back and arms; one with a close and almost buzz cut (solely to identify them), whom presented as incredibly surly and passive aggressive staff members behind bar. The two bartenders, whom paraded up and down behind bar without serving customers; proceeding to ignore others at bar and only serve a woman, whom they appeared to be acquainted with already. They made my friend and I feel less than welcome, which goes against the grain of a supposedly LGBTQI+ venue in a community, where tolerance, acceptance and friendliness should abound. Moreover, the bartenders demanded I hand over cash or my bank card, after he placed my drinks down. I requested and proceeded to try and pay using my iPhone and Apple Pay, which then resulted in a petulant and unprofessional response from him, where he berated and lectured me for not having cash or having my bank card to surrender to him at bar. He said:“you should’ve told me this”.He then went and got the duty manager, whom kindly apologised and said they were getting used to dealing with Apple Pay, which is strange, as there is widespread use throughout the island. I thought the matter to be resolved, however on attempting to order again with the aforementioned problematic and hostile bartenders, I proceeded to pay and in passive-aggressive form, the two bartenders turned to each other and said:“I don’t know do we take Apple Pay, I don’t think so.”At this point, my friend and I left the bar feeling affronted and appalled at the manner, in which we had been treated in a bar, which is allegedly central to the LGBTQI bar offerings in Honolulu. It might have been a tough last few years with COVID-19; restrictions and lockdowns, however these bartenders continue to make life difficult unnecessarily so.
Horrible experience—will not return. Planned to go with a family group. One person was denied entry when she was not intoxicated. Would have been better if they had simply said they didn’t want women of a certain age visiting. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
A lot of unhappiness with my groups experience. We paid 60 to get in, as it was a NYE event. Upon getting in, got a tab and got our drinks, went around to the dance floor.Drinks were mediocre, but at this point we were too busy with the overcrowded and rowdy bunch of customers.Went for second rounds, bar guys seem to have pretty good service, but he decided to serve the queue cutter which was the literal last straw.Decided this isnt our zone, 45 minutes of queue, we got the hell out.
It’s truly sad that as a gay man that gay owners stack the bar with straight staff that treat the gays so poorly!! Never have I come to a place that ment to be about the community and treat the gays so bad!! Truly it’s not worth coming too if your gay and want a place to be part of!! Straight men wanting money not caring how bad they treat the people!!!!
Friendly, welcoming lgbt+ bar that is roomy and unpretentious. A great spot for after beach drinks and evening dancing. The music variety was great, we went back several times during our recent trip to Oahu.
This place was fun! Went for dinner and the food is more like bar food (what can you expect) and the music was good! Would probably be really fun after hours but didn’t have the time to stay and check it out
Went for a few drinks with friends but the bartender David was extremely rude. Ended up leaving after one because of his behaviour. Will not be going back. Is a shame as the other staff were lovely and the musicians playing were amazing.
Nice place and good activities and music. Bar staff is friendly but not as attentive as they should be - spend more time chatting and goofing off than anything.Still the best of the bars in Oahu but dont expect a strong gay culture here.
They’re always pleasant with me. I’ve gotten virgin piña colada’s before and asked for multiple coffees. They’ve never made a big stink about it, which I appreciate. Maybe I’ve been on nights not too crowded, but I’ve also been on the weekend. I’ve literally worn jeans and a tshirt and no one bothers you. 💕
You cant ask for a better bar on the beach. Great views. Strong drinks. Interesting entertainment. The staff is nice and the place is well maintained. Great for a quick drink or hunker down for the night and enjoy the festivities.
Great place to hang, revisit on each visit. Only complaint their double cocktail is only a 4 count which generally is a great single. Dont mind the extra $ but a double is a double. To note David is a great ambassador for the bar.
Hulas is such an awesome place. Very attentive bar tenders, especially Mr. Jonny. Will be back on our next trip to the island.
Staff here are awesome. They really care about everyone having a good time, they remember faces and names, and they treat everyone with respect. Great drink specials, fun video screens all around, variety of music, and an excellent mix of locals and visitors. Leave the pretense behind - This is the spot to hang out in Waikiki!
Bartender was friendly and accomodating! Drinks were delicious and inexpensive during happy hour. We got the pork and duck quesadillas abd they were delicious, never had anything like them. We will be back!
I had an amazing time Thursday night with my friends and boyfriend. I came back again tonight with more friends and as I was paying for me and my boyfriend, a security guy I’m assuming walked in the door and told my boyfriend he was unable to come in because he looked like he had too much to drink. My boyfriend told him that he had a couple beers but, was still denied to come in. My boyfriend wasn’t stumbling in or anything. He literally was holding the door open for other people as we were waiting to pay to come on. We had a lot of fun literally two days ago and tonight’s experience had us dumbfounded. They definitely lost business from us tonight and the future if we visit Oahu again.
Manager cuts off without reason... Bar staff didnt agree or understand why (neither did customers)Tried to send inquiry on website but errors out..Had two drinks, was not exhibiting any signs of intoxication and when I went to order another drink the manager ran out and informed me he would not allow bar staff to serve me. Multiple bartenders and regular patrons were confused at the situation, didnt know why this happened. If I did something inappropriate I would love to know.
Different my favorite bar Im Waikiki loved the vibe and seemed like the staff actually enjoyed working
The best bar in hawaii. Easy. Good vibes, good drinks, and a fantastic view out the open window. Whats there not to love?!
Nice view of the ocean and park area. If youre lucky, Lee will be your server. Shes no-nonsense and honest. Years can pass and shell still remember you and your favorite drink. She truly makes this place feel like .. home
Go somewhere else. Manager did not want to admit me and my mom. Said I was visibly intoxicated when I was not. Seemed more like they didn’t want to admit women over a certain age. First time this has happened. Ruined my family’s last night in Honolulu. Spend your money somewhere else.
Great place 2 BHappy Hour 3 to 6 on weekdays. Fair prizes for the drinks, super snacks.Life music with ‚open mike‘ andView on the beach & sea & zoo 😉
A good option to stop except cafe shop, 1 minutes away by walk from Waikiki beach.
Amazing place and the vibe is always wonderful. The staff have a wonderful attitude as well. If you want a little to eat then go early. Food ends at 9pm. The nachos are out of this world. Best in all of waikiki.
Great vibe. Good drink specials. The Cobb salad was very good.Service was aggressively mediocre thoOverall favourite bar in the area
David is so rude!! Came for a couple of drinks with friends but David was rude and condescending. When we enquired about the price of drinks he said ‘you order a drink and I will tell you the price!’. What kind of place does that. He was patronising throughout. It’s a shame cos the place is pretty good and the singers were awesome.
The service was good, good atmosphere and had no problem with security, maybe they fixed after the others reviews or it was just luck but everything was ok on my experience
They had good music going. Some people were on the dance floor but left early Im sure it was because it was a Tuesday and they had to work. The people who frequent the club are really really friendly and so is the staff
I gtta start reading descriptions before stopping at places 😵💫 good vibes and great music. nice people but uhh im a straight dude and my gaydar needs some recalibration cuz it took me waaaay too long to realize 😅
I came for the Sunday pitcher specials and I will be back for the Sunday pitcher specials! Felt very safe here with them following all covid protocol, and while small the food menu has delicious items.
Bartenders are super nice, fun dancy music, great open air seating... I was sitting wrong though once months ago and the security guard still uncomfortably follows me giving me the stinkeye.
Horrible experience. The bartender David seemed like he didn’t know what he was doing, spilled a drink on our whole table, and when told that we were ready to close out because our Lyft was arriving shortly he said “I know you all are in a rush but I’m the only one here and so am I”. Would not recommend!
A favorite by locals and visitors alike. The staff is friendly and everyone makes you feel a part of a family. Great view of Waikiki Beach while sitting at the bar or on the window. Drinks are great and reasonable affordable prices unlike most other bars or clubs in Waikiki.
Sandy didnt like my feedback and erased it? 😄To be clear, again: staff is terrible and lies to you. They charge you on your first fill of club soda - thats not ok. Food is awful, drinks too pricey. You get way better places than this!AVOID
Not usually my type of place but this was my favorite bar on Ohau. The view, staff, and food/drinks are winners. Jon our server was awesome, he really went the extra mile for us and made us feel welcomed big shout out to Jon and the rest of the team at hula bar and lei stand!
So much fun on a Sunday afternoon and our server Lee was incredible. Miss Candi Shell is a superstar! Hilarious and extremely talented! Well be back for sure!
LGBTQ crowd is mixed with a little bit of tourist and local of every preference having a good time enjoying drinks and music under the majestic Diamond Head landmark in east Waikiki. Sometimes you can expect a cover charge usually for special occasions.
Pretty cool place, very hard to find from the road. On the 2nd floor of the hotel.Mostly a gay bar, but also straight people there. Drinks werent expensive, food was good, friendly staff, and the DJs (KSM and Baby G) were awesome. Would definitely go again.
The bartender made terrible drinks. The server looked scared like it was his first day on the job and was very slow. I would NOT recommended this place to anyone. They fraudulently charged $52 to my card more than 5 hours AFTER I left the place. Thankfully my bank was able to stop the charge but who the he*! does that to their customers!?!
Long-time establishment in the Honolulu gay scene. Small video bar with open bay windows overlooking a quiet park on the backside (pun obviously intended) of the Honolulu Zoo and a bit of Waikiki beach. Perfect place for sunset drinks with friends. Friendly (hot!-but-probably-straight) bartenders.
Had the worst experience possible here. I asked one of the bartenders for a menu, and he walked away and proceeded to ignore me and serve someone else. I then complained to the manager who was also very unhelpful and I was made to feel like I was in the wrong. When the bartender was finally made to apologise to me he had no excuse for what he did. Rude and unhelpful staff. Avoid this place.
Sooo I was enjoying my Friday night first Friday I’ve had off in 6 months and I’m finishing up waiting for friends and the bartender says are you ordering and I said no I’m good and he’s asks the person beside me for there order at the same time as he pushes me across from the bar and I’m like don’t put your hands on me and he’s like I’m doing my job and I repeatedly said but you don’t put your hands on me! He shook the customers hand to try and ignore me and I said u don’t put your hands on me!!!! I’m absolutely done with hulas completely!!! I had 3 drinks leaving to go get food and my first Friday off in 6 months and I go to enjoy myself and you put your hands on me! Not me you are one of the most rudest individuals I’ve ever met on my life!
The bartenders are friendly, but Leonard the doorman ruins the atmosphere. He looms over your shoulder like some gargoyl, trying to be an intimidating presence. Youll enjoy Bacchus more. Hulas was my favorite Waikiki bar for 20 years, now my friends and I skip it. Ive worked in bars for 30 years.
Terrible, people complain about having fun here, it’s a bar it’s so white washed in the sense that if you’re having any type of fun they want you to be quiet
Enjoyed this place a couple of times but food will leave you wanting like most bar places. Drinks were good and they pour heavy. Liked it but wouldn’t say we loved it.
Jaime was an absolute blessing upon that place! Good music and good vibes, don’t get too messy there though, cause they will kick you out instantly
Service was good and drinks well-priced, but nothing really special. The cocktails and our food was okay, but nothing more.
The hostess was rude. Had I read the first few reviews on trip advisor and on open table I would have realized that this place is clearly below my standards and lacks couth. The peasant in the front as we approached was the first experience off the plane as we approached her stand she proceded to say 21 and over bye. Without a word coming out of our mouths without asking my name or carding me. I am however flattered that this neanderthal thought I was under 21, that must rub her the wrong way. Had she done her job I could have provided I dont know both my drivers license and military ID card that says I am 34 and my husband is 37. Perhaps my supple, smooth caramel skin bothers her. I hope she can have someone read her this review and perhaps reflect.
Fabulous old Hulas. Best gay bar in the islands. Fun cried. Good vibe. Live music. Great staff.
Drinks were great. Prices were tolerable considering the area. Servers were very cranky and I’m not a fan of them adding the tip automatically, even in small groups.
Employees (specifically David) are rude and talk down to the customers. They think covid doesn’t exist when you’re at your table but when you walk to the bathroom it exists and you better wear your mask.I wore my mask as asked, and still wasn’t good enough for sir David.David was very rude and condescending as he asked me to “wear my mask correctly” and taught me how to wear one while saying “masks are still a thing here” and walked away from me.But it’s okay for groups of over 10 to make out with each other.Knowing tourist come to this place and to talk to the customers that way is disgusting behavior.I do not suggest coming here and I have high hopes David can find a job at the CDC where he belongs because he knows the ins and outs of a “deadly virus”.
Patrick is a sweetheart of a bartender and our personal favorite, but everyone is friendly. Brunch was tasty and fun. Great view, get place to sit and watch Waikiki go by.
Well just on the back end of three weeks in glorious hawaii of which Hulas bar is a big part of the experience every year.Brian and the bar team are amazing. Lee of course is gorgeous and very much a part of what makes the bar so special to us.Its a unique gay bar which of course is changing with the times but oh so special to hawaii. The live music from 6 adds perfectly to that experience. May Hulas live in for many years to come we love the place. Bring on 2018 !
Drinks get me tipsy! Always have a good tine here with friends. Drinks arent over priced and are strong enough for their cost. I usually get the mai tai bucket. It gets me there. 2 of those and im good! I like the open air thing theyve got also. Food is not good in my opinion.Thats why 4 stars. Otherwise Id give 5.
Personally, good music, good drinks, good bar tenders. Would of rather stay here then Play Bar Night Club. Good vibes then the other club I went into. I regret going into PlayBar. It smells horrible like if all the people there pissed and s**t themselves. The minute you walk in to that other close club you wont be able to get rid of that horrible smell. Im someone from ATL and Ive been to raket clubs but this PlayBar kicks the bucket.
The bartender is very friendly alaho me got a great snack esperando with Hawaiian spicy and lime . He offer me a drink a ginger ale soda club.. He gave me a nice appetite made me happy vacation couple weeks and honor friendly native Hawaiian islands are liberty equal human. Honestly the bartenders are very cute personally honor to tour and guest come in Honolulu Gay commuinty .today I thinking want to make new friends here.. YaHoO yAhOo
Nice place. Bartender Matt was excellent. He was Busy. Rest of staff was great friendlyHad the Reuben Sandwich. Excellent. Fine Dining quality food.
Not a local friendly place. Geared towards tourist with overpriced drinks and non-friendly staff. Not recommended. Used to have better management and staff. Has gone down a lot. There are better options on island with true Aloha spirit. Recommend passing Hulas on your visit.
I went with my cousins.. my cousin who is a girl was extremely comfortable... eli the bartender was amazing.. one of my cousin was drunk and lit a cigarette.. we were very happy they didnt throw him out but cut his drinks... very professional and our night was complete
Live music was good. The food was a little over seasoned but wait staff was nice and attentative.
The racist and violent staff guy touched me very aggressive only because I was leaving with a glass of ice and he was yelling about the vape of my friend, we didn’t even know vaping was not allowed so when we were leaving he literally hit my hand so hard that the glass fell to the floor and scared me. I don’t recommend this place
Do not go here as a tourist. My boyfriend and I got our drinks spiked and unfortunately my money stolen.Speaking to locals and have now been told it’s a very common occurrence at this venue.
Perfect, open, 2nd floor view of diamond head and Kapiolani park with the zoo to the left, pacific ocean to the right. Pupus are well worth it and creative. Try a Mai Tai, its a happy hour special
Not mahalo when we went to join our group who was already inside. Our group entered and the bouncer immediately didnt let us in even though it was a minimal group of chill friends. Overly strict entrance was such a buzzkill for no reason.Definitely would NEVER come back for such blatant discrimination.Never.
Drinks are strong and the local charm and culture is always welcoming and energetic. Looking for a place to have a drink before heading out for the night...this is your place.Edit RemoveListed in: Best Happy Hour
Had a great time here. Drinks were on point and my server SY was amazing. Thanks for the advice on what I needed. I love this place whenever I visit.
Great Pau hana bar with breathtaking views of Diamond Head and the beach. Locals and visitors alike can find great drinks from Mai Tais to bloody Marys to lava flows. A must for anyone looking for fun after the sun.
A real vibe with cheap drink, they always have good specials and sunset views. Actually a gay bar but love to see it.
My BFF and I had been coming to Hulas for over 2 years, regularly. We deployed for 8 months. We came back tonight. The crown aged 20+ years, staff changed, Sy actually acknowledged me, and a certain bartender Brandon (he goes by another name) legit looked at me in the eyes and looked through me. I dont need to be cherished, I dont need to be paraded, but good lord, when I come into the bat I was go too, I dont expect a waitress asking if I know what I want.Yall are going downhill, I want you to turn this around.....I left tonights for scarlet.
The generous pours the great food and the fun atmosphere make this a great time out. The staff are excellent.
Hulas has good drinks and a friendly staff. The place during the day is just a decent place to eat but by night is a pretty hopping gay bar/club.
Love Hulas . We always come to Hulas when in town.for over 5+ years Never a bad time and always fun including the booze cruise . will be back in a few weeks and looking forward to seeing the friendly and sexy bar backs.
The bar staff was not welcoming and with complete attitude could not even both to ask what I want to drink he just raised his aregant ugly head. Which is a shame because to be treated like that in one of your bars is a complete shame.
I used to live right by the old location in Waikiki, that bar was just so unique. The former vibe is unfortunately a bit lost.( I know you had to move, I get it) . But sadly so did the fantastic groovy atmosphere.
Excellent staff, super engaging and attentive. Drinks reasonably priced. Loved the music and vibe.
Love this place. Just there for 1, but will be back! Great Maitai, fantastic view, cool bartenders. We left with big smiles!
I would like to alert the owners of this establishment, the official CHELSEA is extremely rude to meet customers. She was stupid to me. The other staff members are very nice, especially DAVID and JOE.
Good music. Good mix of people. Staff is plenty and helpful. Locals are free to get in. $5 cover otherwise.
The worst experience I have ever had. 25 minute wait and as the bartender was serving us drinks a server that goes by Ana yelled at us for standing in the wrong place. When it was time to sit, we asked not to be sat in her section. The Manager came and asked us to leave without even asking any questions. Unbelievable!
Came for the open mic on mondays! Was fun and was able to perform. GJ was great host and he even performed the looping beat and/or live guitar instrumental to back up the performer. It is located in a nice spot in waikiki
Don’t tell me I dont belong here because I find the music completely out of touch and inappropriate for the type of establishment I thought I was supporting
Imperial Court of San Francisco party for the new Emperor of Imperial Court of Hawaii - Carlos Hernandez. Come down - see the Show buy some raffle tickets to support a good cause! 5 - 10pm tonight 10/23/16. Staff is fun and music rocks!
Great staff, great view, and great Mai Tais! We had a blast here and was one of the very few places we went more than once on our visit!
Small place. Enough for a quiet crowd. Wasnt too busy . Great bar staff and decent dancers . Plays mainly rnb latin music.
Had fun at open mic night, and the Pina colada is amazing! The rest is pretty overpriced though and the ambience is kinda tacky without good views.
Terrible experience! We were turned away for no reason at all with a ton of empty tables. I guess they don’t like to have paying customers. Take your money and business elsewhere on the Waikiki strip!
First of all, 10.00 cover for drag show that was not done in drag. Was asked to leave 4 times, yes he followed me to the bathroom, because another customer and I accidentally switched wallets. I was asked, she was not. Over priced drinks. MY wallet and I will go somewhere else for now on.
Great place for tourist since it has a great view of Diamondhead. Seasoned staff are great. Local crowd is sort of the pretty and popular types who tend to be full of themselves.
Came here for their Mimosas and Marys event and absolutely loved it! I hope they continue to have it every month!
This Place has discriminated against locals.Since they have moved. Their attitude really stinks. When you go there ask yourself...Where are all the local boys? Honey we have left the party and moved to better pasture grounds. Hulas has lost us locals and well never return..
Favorite go-to stop for me in Honolulu!! Great staff!! Reasonably priced drinks!! Fun atmosphere!! And an awesome view!!
Must stop here every time I come back to town. Highly recommend just for the simplicity of it. Bound to meet good people. Just about everyone is friendly. And the staff is awesome!
Nice, friendly bar. Good drinks. Staff is a bit overextended when it gets crowded.
Matt the bartender was terrible. stood there for 15 minutes and he served everyone else. Won’t be back
Surprisingly good prices for location. The bartenders were very personable. They have very loyal patrons
They are requiring proof of covid vaccine or a negative test. We are doing inter island travel and have neither. Would not reccomend place was empty.
