-Atmosphere-The atmosphere is nice, plenty of room for seating and has a nice low-lit, club type ambience with good music and good times all around. Problem for me was my table was shaky as hell but I put a napkin under it and kept up the good vibes. They had a DJ and a dance floor and everyone was having a great time. Definitely for the grown and sexy crowd and if you like to do the hustle, this is where it’s at.-Service-The service was good, the server was nice but I think she may have been a little busy and overwhelmed so it could have been a little better but all in all it was good solid service.-Food-I honestly think I had the best what soup that I ever had here. The food was hot, tasty, and fresh to order. The prices were reasonable for the style of food and the portions were nice that I had leftovers. The drinks were good and reasonable. Definitely a must try.4/5 🔥 for me, would definitely recommend and will return again.
In fairness, the moi moi was okay. The stew and rice, the white rice was good. The jollof rice and stew was sub par. The amount of protein is very limited in portion size. Its $18 for stew and rice. The chicken was a thigh and drumstick with a small ladle of stew. The fish was less than a 1/2 of whole fish. I will say maybe even 1/4 of a whole fish. The stew was salty with bay leaf. The flavors are similar to a Nigerian stew but not close enough. The stew had a taste of pepper heat.
Updated: since I’ve been consistently coming to support my daughter, the food is never the same. Seems like the cooks aren’t following a recipe so the food varies every single time. The stew is either just right or too salty. The curry goat is hit or miss. One time it came out like soup. The inconsistency in the serving sizes are an issue too. The fufu is sometimes super sticky like mashed potatoes. Is not firm. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be like as I’ve only had it here. But again the inconsistency with all the food is enough to make you not order. It once took 2 hours for food to come out.Service - the young lady was nice but had to remind her about our order. Waited a half hour for the second drink. The edikang Ikong was pretty tasty. The fufu was good with the stew. The goat could have been much better. Very chewy and the membrane wasn’t taken off. Rum punch was eh…Was there for poetry night. Not too bad. There were some amazing artists.
The food was fabulous. There were so many things to choose from. I wanted a little bit everything. I was lucky other people came and ordered stuff and I got to taste a little bit of almost everything. Next time when I go back, and there will be a next time. I will have to order something new. I was Inspired by the poetry reading. When I say inspired, I want to go back and read some poetry.
Love, love, love this place! I visited this place about two weeks ago on a Friday with a friend during happy hour. This was my second visit here and I havent been here since 2016. The food and the vibes were just as good as it was the first time of my visit. The staff were amazing! Everyone was super friendly. The servers were everything! Very hospitable, friendly, nice, super cool and made my friend and I feel comfortable. They also have a live DJ that plays both Caribbean and todays R&B/Rap hits. The DJ also takes requests. This I will be back again soon.
First time visitors. I had moi moi, oxtails and plantains; while my husband had the meat pie, egusi, and pounded yam. I was more than satisfied with the food. Tender, fall off the bone meat, and I really liked the sauce. Food was well seasoned, with a kick of heat! My husband is Yoruba, and wasnt too pleased with his soup, barely touched it.Being the only persons in the spot (5pm), I think we could have gotten more attention. Felt like we had been forgotten about a couple of times. Our water came out in plastic cups. Dont know if thats normal, but its tacky. Maybe 10-15 min later, another couple came in and were given glasses with a pitcher of water 😧 But we will go back and give it another try
The overall experience was good. Our server Cousin was very friendly and accommodating. She provided service with a smile and great attitude. The food (oxtails and jollof rice) was tasty and flavorful, although a little too spicy for me. It was a nice surprise that Kola had live entertainment. We had a great time on a Wednesday evening.
Nice place, okay food with small portions and over priced. 4 piece of beef and lots of rice .1leg quarter and lots of rice. $17 per dish with mostly rice. Happy hour prices are good for drinks. Waitress was new on the job I think, but nice and fast. DeeJay played nice music. Cigar smoking made me leave. I would go again for drinks and music. Outside is ♿ and sort of in a strip mall off main road, not bad. I did not try the inside.
Being new to the area and Nigerian, I really wanted to like this place and call it home but theres no chance Ill be coming back. The cashier seemed annoyed about even taking our order, the food was nothing close to authentic, was bland and came out cold, and it was all way overpriced. $5 for one medium meatpie? $16 for some rice? Huh???If youre Nigerian, you might want to try to find an alternative because this definitely aint it. One extra star for the drinks though. Only reason Id come here tbh.
Kola is always a vibe. I love that Kola remains committed to its vision and has not assimilated into the cookie-cutter club atmosphere. The cocktails are delicious, and the music is on point!
My first time there it was okay I just feel that the waitress needed a little bit more service experience but we were there with a group and it could have been a lot for her to maintain the overall I had the kola rum punch My first one it was okay it needed just a tad bit more liquor and when I told her that when she brought my second one my second one sent me straight it was very good.. I watch my friends tear the food up looking fingers and everything. The music got us up and dancing all over the dance floor I had just missed the live band but next week I will return and enjoy myself again. If it wasnt for my girlfriends birthday gathering here I would not never knew anything about it I got a place where I can have good drinks good food and somewhere to dance Ill be back 😍😊🥰
Great place to visit with my lady when I am missing my authentic African cuisine. Great music and beautiful atmosphere.
Dominique and the staff are friendly and courteous. Good food and plenty of adult beverages. BJ always plays the right music to keep the vibe flowing and hes a talented dance instructor for Bop, Chicago Stepping, Ballroom & Hustles (Line Dancing). My favorite spot for Saturday evening.
I ordered food for a school program showcasing other cultures food and this place has really good food. I never had African cuisine and I must say they didn’t disappoint. They were so kind to give me samples before I made my purchase and everything was good and it was hard to choose. They received good reviews from the children and parents. Will definitely return. The vibes in the restaurant were good as well. Clean inside.
I love this place! I hosted a few events here. The food is always great, along with the energy.Shout out to Danielle, whos always friendly!
KOLA JAMAICAN RESTAURANT FARMINGTON HILLS 👍👍 👍 👍 👍Good Jamaican restaurant in Farmington hills. They have music events frequently and its greatAMBIENCE & CLEANLINESS 👍 - Food Jamaican ambience and decently cleanedLOCATION 👍 Middle of Farmington hillsQUALITY OF THE FOOD- 👍 we ordered jerk wings , curry chicken and spicy potatoes. All goodSERVICE👍 Very friendly service and servers are awesome.VALUE for MONEY👍 reasonably priced and worth to try.
I ordered from here because its close to my house. The food was nasty and not seasoned one bit. Ive had Fork in Nigeria plus others and this was horrible. The oxtail was tough, the egusi not seasoned. Jollof rice was horrible. The amount of money I spent on this food and it be this horrible was heartbreaking. Never again. I called twice before making this review and no one answered.
Everything very nice/good. Looking forward to next time Ill travel to Michigan. Its a very good place to enjoy idicaikon vegetable soup ( Nigeria cuisine)
I have been going to Kola for 4+ years. Great food! I am Nigerian and can confirm their food is authentic Nigerian food. Jollof rice is great, Ayamashe with rice ks King and everything else I have bought there I found to be very good. I also like that they bring Nigerian artiste to perform from time to time. There was Falz and Sean Tizzle. Overall, glad to have Kola in the Metro Detroit area.
I think this is one of those places where you have to manage your expectations when it comes to service, so Im rating it with that in mind. The service was VERY SLOW. VERY SLOW. If you can get over that, youll be good. The food was great. The beef suya and egusi were real standouts. At first I thought it was a little pricey, but the portions are so large that its worth it. The drinks were a bit overpriced, but not too bad at $9 per. I was there on a Friday night, and they had live music for maybe an hour or two. Then, they switched to a DJ. Both were good. Im not sure what the crowd is usually like on a Friday night, but there werent many people there. Im planning to go back to try more of the menu.
My niece is loving the fufu and egusi stew. I also come occasionally with family to dance in the evening atmosphere. Nice vibes
Decided to give them another try. Ordered the jollof rice with jerk chicken. The food was old and it didnt taste fresh. The jollof rice was refried and taste old. The jerk chicken was very dry and taste like it had been frozen and had jerk sauce added. A waste of money because I cant even it the food I bought. Also, a waste of gas, I drove 25 miles just to have traditional Nigerian food and couldnt even eat it.
We arrived upon opening; the floor wasnt clean but the service afterwards was great, the music & staff was great and so was the DJ...very enjoyable birthday celebration for our friends.🙂
$30 for 1 piece of oxtail and thinly sliced plantains on an early Saturday night. …30$ …. Let that sink in … cause if they have to nerve to send a plate like that out what else they doing behind that kitchen that is morally just wrong. At LEAST, if it’s just 1 boney piece of oxtail with mostly fat , let it have some flavor ooo what a disgrace, in gods name may he forgive you cause I can not.I do not have the energy in me to go and argue with the lady, I just hope karma get the people who allow this
The worst egusi soup I’ve ever had. I’ve tried it a couple of times now and always end up disappointed. I was craving egusi soup today and with kola being the closest location that has it I decided to give it another chance, and I’m beyond disappointed. From the moment I opened it I could smell that it was burnt.I tried adding the sauce from the chicken so that I can atleast eat it but that didn’t even help. The burnt taste was too overpowering.
So disappointed. I convinced my wife to try this restaurant because it was close instead of driving to fork in Nigeria. I was thinking it would be the same sense they were both nigerian restaurants. Boy was I wrong! Jellof rice was terrible! Egusi stew was awful! Goat was disgusting! Also the food had a old taste to it. Definitely wasnt fresh.
We enjoyed ourselves and Kayla our waitress. Thank you for an authentic and amazing experience.
IMO, they serve one of the best beef and chicken suya I have ever had. A little pricy but I liked the food.
The layout is set up nicely. The womens room is clean. The atmosphere is pleasant and inviting. The food is not the best authentic food Ive eaten, but its good, and besides, that is only 1 of the many dishes that I have not tasted but intend to. The DJ? Tobias is 1 of the best. A mixture of Raggae, Soca, African, and YES! Amapiano! Not overburdened by R&B. Just enough to keep the flow moving. I had a wonderful time! Ill definitely go again. Thank you for a spectacular evening!
Maybe it was this specific night, but the crowd was way too young for my liking! Tables are first come, first serve. The table we sat at was not stable at all and my friend dropped her drink because of that. I paid $34 for (8) jerk wings, fries and one rum punch. They put the jerk sauce on the side in a small container and I wish they put it on the wings because that was not enough. I highly doubt that Ill return unless my friends drag me there again.
Kolas is a great space. Very nice staff. Smells amazing when you walk in.I ordered the egusi regular, okra stew, oxtail,& fufu..also jollof rice. Rice =spicy & delicious. Okra stew = spicy &very flavorful. Oxtail= I need it way more tender than what I got. I dont leave oxtails but I had to leave those. Fufu= great! Egusi=I will say is an acquired taste for every different palette. I think if Id have got it with a protein, I may have enjoyed the flavors better. Im not sure if its the egusi seed that has a deep toasted flavor, or is it the palm oil with the deep toasted flavor. Im not giving up on it, Im going to try it with a protein next time. It was a great experience dining at Kolas, and I look forward to going back!
I ordered the grilled red snapper with fried plantains and Jollof rice. The red snapper is very good. The fried plantains were good but did not need to be made spicy. The jollof rice was too spicy. The white yams that came with the red snapper doesnt seem edible. Its like soft cardboard. The texture is weird and the taste is absent. Im not sure how its to be eaten but imagine steak French fries being left out for two nights and then trying to eat them as is. Its really bad. I dont think they should put it in the dinners unless requested. Im sure no one is eating it. Waste of food. Also, the cashier girl was not personable at all and had an unwelcoming attitude as I asked questions about the menu items. It was as if I was bothering her. Girl thats what your job is though right? Pick a job where you dont have to deal with ppl because youre not nice.
Saturday nights with BJ & Co. are fire! Always a good time. Good music, good dancing? Good food and good people
I attended a special event so the place was hopping. Great music, lots of people. My bar drinks were very good. I was disappointed with the dining experience. It took over an hour to get my food, then my waitress informed me they were out of what I ordered, beans and rice.🤷🏻♀️ So they substituted with just fried rice. Mediocre to me. No price adjustment. I had goat meat. It was very fatty and gristle. I only had a few bites and threw the rest away. I spent a lot of money that I feel was wasted. The people I spoke to that night spoke about great Fri. Nights there, so I was eager to return. I went back on a Friday night and was so disappointed. Hardly anyone was there. No dancing. The live band was just two guys and they looked miserable to be there. I looked up at dj box..no dj.Not sure if this will be one of my spots.
Very nice restaurant and lounge. I went in to pick up my order that I had called in, but when I walked in there was a live band playing some beautiful oldies I decided to just have dinner there. I had their whole grilled fish with plantain and fried yam and it was delicious, I dug into it before I remembered to take a picture. The customer service was also A+, the owner offered and gave me a free drink because there was a mix up with my order( I wasnt even upset about the mix up, but I didnt decline his offer😀).The only reason I gave them a 4 star is because although their goat meat peppersoup is tasty but it has little or no broth,, peppersoup is soup you cannot enjoy peppersoup without the broth and the meat was not goat it was just beef.
Kola was amazing the service was great. The bar manager baby doll was the absolute best!
The restaurant is amazing. They have amazing waitresses. They have a security. They have great music great app is fair. I love it there. I would go there every chance i can time then I have to go there. and on top of it, they have amazing people that host there. Sometimes they have live bands performance famous African singers, who performs there at times in tines events and parties are all going down at kola The owner is really doing amazing job and I can’t wait to meet her one of these days and I know I will meet him one of these days. God bless this restaurant with unity peace love and more.
I was really excited to patron an African owned establishment. I ordered wings at 11pm, they accidentally gave my wings to someone else. I didnt receive my wings till midnight. The waitress told me she would discount them for me. The discount was $2.35 on a $11.75 meeal (see pic below). I told her forget it and that they could keep it. Then she gave them to me for free. I didnt want them and they werent that good. I was walking out the door and saw my friend sitting down and it took us to flag a waitress down after 45 minutes of waiting to get service. In general the service was slow and apathetic. A cover charge of $10 for a poor turnout and it smelled like a sweaty hotbox that has not been cleaned up in forever. Not a good experience at all. I do wish it to improve.
Kola Restaurant has authentic West African cusine ! Light soup with goat, spicy beef stew, and the fried plantains were my favorite items. They also have decent FuFu, warm and soft, that goes well with either light soup or the beef stew. Finally, Saturday nights, Kola transforms into a lovely Afrobeats venue like no other in this side of Michigan. They play all the best hits, and attracts a really diverse crowd from East, West and South African disapora and play those hits.Highly recommended!!✌🏾✊🏾 🇬🇭
This is one of those places where you have to know what they do best. In a party of 9 only 1 person enjoyed their food. We waited over an hour for the food and it was not worth the wait...at all! All of the food did not have any flavor, the oxtails were extremely small(the smallest I have ever seen), the rice and peas were crunchy, beef in the stew was overcooked, flavorless wings and the list goes on.The coco bread and jollof rice was good.Lastly, they do have happy hour, however, the time is not correct on the menu and this was not communicated until after the bill came. I do not recommend.
This is where I go, sometimes to eat and have fun 👍 😁 💃
I truly love Kolas, i have been coming here for the past few years. The food is beyond amazing and so are the staff. Only thing that bothers me is you’re getting less and less food at a higher price. Don’t get me wrong i understand ingredients have gone up but the food is a little too high and for the portion you’re getting. Pretty please add a little more to your soup bowls please 🙏🏾. I love ❤️ you guys and see you soon.
Good food, great service and live music.
I pass by this place EVERY day going to work and never knew it was there until my sister came to town yesterday. The food was INCREDIBLE; the atmosphere as like CHEERS; and the DJs were off-the-chain! I had an absolute blast... I will be going back to get more beef patties and Jollof rice TO-DAY! :-)
The price was extremely high and food was very dry also the service was not good she bought the sauce after we were done eating. I would not recommend the food to anyone. Please do better also we did not get the coconut rice that she said came with the meal. 🙁
I had the opportunity to attend yesterday’s AfroBeat Paint and Sip at the Kola Restaurant & Ultra Lounge, and hosted by Be A Part of Me Consulting, LLC. It was an amazing experience filled with great music, great food and great people! I even had the opportunity to express my artistic talent, which promoted self-care through painting and relaxation. Until next time, thank you Kola!!
It supposed to be a club night with treggae slash mixed media music in a clublike setting, but it sucked. No reggae it was like someone dropped me in a bar in Ghana I did not get a mixed culture vibes and felt completely out the element. The chicken seem fine at best.If your African it might vibed for you but everyone else you will feel left out. I suggest they lean towards diversity and train the Dj or find one that understands the music culture of America and Reggae.Otherwise they will be having lots of problems trying to keep the doors open soon.
The food is delicious, but this place could be way more nicer if they had couches instead of tables. It needs to be more of a lounge type of place. It feels cold and not inviting. The owner really should invest in the inside of this building as far as making it more of a lounge comfortable environment. Adding hookah would be a plus too.
Omg!!! I love this place !!! I will be back to sing and dance !!! Great service ! Very clean and superb customer service!!!
I definitely did not care for my curry chicken I probably should have took a picture for $19 and got a drumstick and a half a chicken breast and a bowl of rice. Had it good and flavorful I dont mind paying.
The food was good but it wasnt completely what I ordered. They gave me chicken ( that I did not est) instead of fish, the order was not ready at 5:30. The driver got there to pick it up and they did not have my order prepared, she had to wait an extra 30 minutes while they were going back and forth about giving me some plantains. They really need to work on there customer service skills. Good food should have good service.Complaint/ Comment / ComplimentI appreciate and want to thank you for taking time out to let me know that you all are working on correcting the concerns from the customers with your staff. I am willing to give the restaurant another chance because there is always room for growth and improvement. Thanks again to the management and their staff.
I would give five stars however food quality has dropped since coming here 3 years ago. Could be that this place is now popular for African Food ......Otherwise this place is really chilled, clean, with great vibes....live bands
My wife and I went for Reggae night, and it was some of the best music weve heard in a while. The crowd is pretty diverse. The owner greeted us, the staff was attentive and we had a great time. The food is pretty good, too... I love the hint of sweet (sweet potato, maybe???) in the jerk chicken.
Food: 7/10. The jollof was really good and the jerk chicken as well. What lowers the score is the meat pie. It was either old or came from the frozen section. It did not taste fresh at all and was very bland.Atmosphere: 5/10: There was some jams that was played but it was blaring loud! I could barely have a conversation with the people I came with. We basically had to yell at each other. The lighting was weird and also the set up of the restaurant. It was kind of confusing when we walked in because there was no host.Customer Service: 3/10. The waitress made very rude comments. Please understand that not every enjoys “sarcasm.” She was rude and made us feel uncomfortable. No bill was provided which I thought was odd. I’ve never been to a restaurant that did not provide a bill. When someone from my party went to the register to request it, no one was there. Also the waitress kept sniffling and I saw her coughing multiple times. Please stay at home if you’re sick. I think we should know that by now after dealing with a pandemic!
This place has the best food 👌 👌 I cant wait to go back and everybody was so friendly🥰❤ the atmosphere was very lovely and upbeat!! I Highly recommend Kola😁
I enjoy the environment although it is extremely pricey. At $20 to enter I went for the night life experience not the food. Seating is highly limited so get there early. DJ was good playing Afrobeats and a little Caribbean.
Where do i start, we waitlisted forever to order, get food, not to mention it was ice cold when we got it. Food was pricey, not worth it, the local Jamaican restaurants in the neighborhood are way better, after spending over $400 combined on food and drinks, the manager has the nerve to ask our party will we be here all night because seats we were sitting in were reserved . You heard me seats not booth, no reserve signs on the table. The place wasn’t even packed. The security guards at the door are sorry, so busy trying to flirt on the way out instead of watching women to their cars, smh , never again
Cousin really made our time here very special. Her customer service is top notch!! Wonderful food and superb service overall. If you want real African cuisine, this is the place to go!!
I have a very good time. Food was good.
I went to this venue for an event. The bar and wait staff were poorly equipped for an event that was planned in advance. It took anywhere from 20-30 minutes (at least) to get a drink (which was quicker than waiting for a server).I ordered chicken wings and fries and was waiting for approximately an hour for a simple meal. I followed up with the bartenders and they had zero sense of urgency (while making drinks either) nor opted to try and accommodate me.I then requested a refund. Of course the food comes out as I’m requesting the refund. After waiting that long for food, most establishments would have comped the bill or offered a discount. But of course, I was asked if I still wanted it and when I refused they just said okay so I proceeded with the refund. Some time later, my friend received his food after at least an hour wait as well. The owner (or manager) told him his food was on the house though for his wait. Of course that didn’t sit well with me because no one tried to accommodate me for my wait.I do not plan on patronizing this establishment again.
We were looking for something different and had a very nice taste experience. The curry chicken was a big winner with the kids. The stew with fish was spicy and great. Friendly service.
I drove all the way to this restaurant to get Authentic African meat pie. I got home, opened my order and found beef patties that they sell at K &F on 9 mile rd for $1. People come to the restaurant for authentic food. If you don’t want to make authentic meat pies then don’t sell those beef patties for $5. I called and spoke with the manager who said “ oh those are jamaican meat pies.” Why would you sell Jamaican meat pie as African meat pies? Who does that? What a terrible experience. I have those beef patties from K&F African market on 9 mile and coolidge in my freezer . I won’t be coming back. I do not recommend. It’s a rip off.
The food, beans, and rice smelled like it came straight out of a barn. Combine that with the mystery meat and you have god knows what sitting on your plate. The wait time was a bit out there as well; we waited an hour for food. Although the goat was okay, customer service was lacking. I ordered a meat pie and it took the time I was there for them (hour and a half) to tell me they had none, even after I had the waitress check on it twice for me. The atmosphere was nice though, and the music was lively - it made me want to dance.
I went to this during open mic poetry night. I did not taste the food but the atmosphere was very nice and the people were very friendly. The wait staff was attentive and I noticed that everybody else was eating something. I can only guess how good the food was. Id go again at least to taste the food.
It was a pretty chill spot! Calm environment, great music! Ill be sure to go a bit earlier than i did this go round, so im able to try the food!
The music was great and atmosphere was nice. The waitress forgot about our table many times and always had to proactively ask for what we needed or find her. My rice was cold and spicy the jerk chicken dry and unappealing. The only thing I liked was the music. Food too pricey for what was offered even the fries were bland. Will come back for the music and maybe drinks.
I usually never write bad reviews unless its true. I drop 40 minutes to the restaurant the drive is not the issue. The food tastes all burned I couldnt eat it at all threw it all the garbage. Im so disappointed I just spend $60 just to throw it all away. During this hard time I try to help business out but its a shame with all the good reviews that the food was not edible at all. My hands still smell like burned food. Definitely not trying again. Hopefully more reviews will help others or maybe not you can judge yourself.
This place was highly recommended and I was highly disappointed. My friends and I drove an hour to experience the food here. I ordered the smothered turkey wings with coconut rice and peas. My rice was burnt and the turkey wings needed more salt. I informed the waitress, she did ask if I wanted another side I declined because my friend had the fried chicken wings and they lacked seasoned salt. The music was good other than that Issa no for me.
The vibe was nice at Kolas! The team was kind, attentive, and fun. The food came out hot and fresh. The drinks were to our liking. This wasn’t our first time and we will be back. Music by Mello is always a treat.
Kola is one of the best experiences. The food is great and the staff are even better. The waitress Jenny’s vibe is one of a kind. If you haven’t been here you’re missing out. The DJs on Thursday nights are jamming and the crowd is popping. This place is truly a great time
We were at a special event at the restaurant and it was extremely crowded. With everyone there, the service and bartending was amazing. We did not have to wait any excessive time for our food are drinks which was great.
First time trying this restaurant! The communication was professional and quick when responding. I placed an order through email and was able to pick up next day. The staff was so friendly and made sure the order was correct. My friends and I had the fufu and some of the traditional soups. It was such a fun and great experience!! Definitely give them a try!
Always a good experience. The food and drinks are great and the customer services have a welcoming, with a west African vibe.
Would’ve gave more stars, but I live 30 minutes away and my order was bagged wrong. I should’ve checked before I left. They didn’t have rice and beans so I had to get jollof rice and didn’t receive it. Instead I received two orders of plantains. So disappointing.
I have gone out for a fun evening on the weekends for the last 4+ years since Kola opened. I can honestly say that my friends and I always have a great time. The live band on Friday nights are awesome!! The DJ’s on Saturdays keep you on the dance floor all night! My favorite food to eat is the fried Tilapia and fried plantain, goes great with the recommended wine by the owner!!
We went to Kola yesterday and were not disappointed. In the past weve gone to see local acts like Nikki Giovanni and their fire DJs in the eveningYesterday was all about the food. Oxtails, jerk chicken, fried plantain, and of course jollof rice. It was so nice to get a taste of some authentic savory dishes. The drinks were as always great as well. Definitely put this on your list of to dos.Because they are primarily a lounge, check the open times on line. Kitchen often closes several hours before the lounge, so keep that in mind.
They made my 40th Birthday the most memorable experience! Best customer service! Food, staff, drinks, music, cleanliness, and decor ALWAYS ON POINT! Liz, the manager, was VERY PROFESSIONAL! She helped me plan every detail before the party and everything we discussed was there when I arrived! Its my favorite hang out spot, go there all the time and cant wait to go back!
I had a birthday party here last night, and I have to say it was nothing less than amazing. The manager (forgot her name) made sure my guest and I was taken care of. She was very very nice and thoughtful and I will be back. ALL my guest enjoyed themselves as well and the food was delicious oh my God. Oh I dont want to forget the DJ he did an outstanding job!
When I say the food was amazing!!!! The vibes was even better, my cousin invited me this restaurant and at the time a guy was giving my cousin and her fiancé ballroom lessons. The service was even better!!!! If you want good food & good music Kola is definitely the place to be!
The food is normally great. I normally get egusi, fish, and pounded yam. However, the egusi I got this Sunday night was scorched. Hopefully theyll make this right when they open back up on Wednesday.Someone else left a review with the same complaint a day ago. All of that batch needs to be dumped expeditiously. 😒The waitress was nice. I ordered ahead of time so there was no wait.
The price for drinks is wayyyyy overpriced. Whats furthermore insulting is the wait staff undermining the customers to be tipped twice. 18% gratuity is added onto you bill.....then if paying with credit card, they ask if you want to leave a tip. This could potentially be problematic. Why would I want to leave a damn near 40% tip and the wait staff knows exactly what they are doing. Make sure to read your bill as they are out to play you.
Absolute fire establishment! The food is insanely delicious, high quality, and well prepared.I have been there for 2 Concerts. This was my first time trying African food..Nigerian to be exact..the chicken suya and joleiff rice were incredible! Hurts it took me so long to go here?, but I will be going Back as long as they are open. 😍
Wow! My first time ordering from Kola Restaurant and Lounge was nothing short of amazing. The taste/quality of the food, customer service and attention to detail are top notch. I will definitely return and highly recommend this establishment to all who value authentic African/Caribbean cuisine at an affordable price.
I was invited to a birthday party, First and foremost the atmosphere was a vibe, The wings I had were horrible I could still see the feathers they were still a little soft , especially for the price they were, Im not willing to try anything else now, The drinks were ok the bartender was attentive

Man, I’ve been wanting to try African food for quite some time. So for my birthday my sister gifted me money for a African meal. So I did my research and found this restaurant. It was only three minutes away, I was so excited .I didn’t read the reviews which was a huge mistake. However, I ordered my food came home to what I thought would be a birthday treat. The food was old reheated and cold.I was so DISAPPOINTED..
I have been to Kola once for my sisters birthday! I enjoyed every moment of it! The drinks were great and the vibe and music were on point. I can not wait to come again!
I am not satisfied with the service order the kols wings and waited 20 still no order by the time I got my order they gave me the kola jerk wings and disappointment and couldnt my original order because kitchen was close. I told the server that I had the wrong order so she told me that my order was free but I still didnt like the joke chicken because it was too spicy bags or was it spicy she said no I like I said it was too spicy I only ate eat two wings I didnt want the order. I will not be coming here again.
Add this to your places to visit. Good African/Caribbean food, happy hour prices on adult beverages even on Saturdays and friendly waitstaff. Perfect place to vibe on Saturdays. Dance Instructor BJ spins the sounds from 5 - 9 with Chicago Stepping, Ballroom and Hustle/Line dancing music. Hell even teach some too. 🎶💃🏾🕺🏾
Amazing atmosphere! Great food. Love it here.UPDATE (01/21) - AWESOME. I was selected to participated in the shipping program where they ship menu items to you. They apply some form of coolant (like dry ice) and cold packs and ship to you via UPS. I got it shortly after shipping and it was still nearly ice cold. Wonderfully packed. Food was vacuum sealed and labeled. Just as good as in the restaurant! Thanks, Kola!
Greetings,Very rare that I go to places like this for parties. Overall it was clean with beautiful decor. The art and pieces around the room, the wall paintings, very cultural rich atmosphere outside of the party club feeling. The building is in three parts. The first is the outdoor seating when you first walk up. On this particular day, the group that rented the outdoor seating were older sports guys who all seemed to be smoking hash. I could barely breathe as I tried to enter the building. You have to go past them because the shape of the building, it’s like an L and the door is in the crook. The second part is the foyer, where all of the art and food is. It’s a wonderful area with not much seating though. It seems to be more of a roaming area with high tables. I didn’t try the food, the line was really long, which is a good sign. The third area is the main room, there’s a dance floor and band area. The people DJ’ing this day had it cranked up to 10. During Covid, I did not want to get that close to someone just to hear them speak. I was vaccinated, but I kept my mask on (unlike most of the party goers). The music was so loud you had to lean to hear even in the foyer. Mind you, they didn’t close the door, but there may have also been speakers in the foyer. The furniture in the main room was pretty nice, but insufficient for the number of people present. That meant a lot of standing around. I don’t know how much of this was administrative and how much was planned by the party host, but I was not thrilling on the loudness or the lack of seating.Overall, it was clean and the furniture was nice. The food was most likely good and the foyer decor was amazing. The people partying… well. It’s a party.
Ive only been here at night to dance. Some times its popping and sometimes its just older people sitting and watching the 5 people on the dance floor. You never know which crowd youre going to get there. Never had any of the food. Music is always legit though.
No consistency. The first time I bought their food it was good but after it’s always worse. This last order didn’t make me happy. I wish they stayed the way they were the first time.
This was a nice surprise. The waitress was pleasant and friendly. The food portions were generous. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful. It didnt become crowded until the poetry recital...really nice!
I love Kola. Food never disappoints and my family favorite is the Pepper soup. You can also rent out a room for your event and just had my brothers graduation dinner here. Staff were very welcoming and attentive.
Never a disappointing night. I’ve been a few times. Good drinks, Good music, and Good food!! The Egusi is my favorite. The outdoor dining made me feel especially comfortable during my last visit.
The foods interesting! But you need to show up on the first Wednesday of every month for the open mic poetry! It all goes down at 8pm!! I do NOT suggest you arrive late. Bad idea. Very.
The food is not good. The service is even worse. I had the beef suja because they were out of chicken. The beef suja was very fatty. I ended up getting the beef without the stew and it was very dry but at least it wasnt fatty. Jenny was the worst waitress every. She only checked on us twice in the 2.5 hours that we were there her service was not worth the 18% that was charged or the $28 that I spent for beef and a drink.
Ive been a fan for years, but no more. The food was horrible! The coconut rice was dry. The jollof rice was nasty. The food was not fresh and had a horrible taste like freezer burn. I cant believe the quality has diminished so much. If I could give zero stars I would. For the money youll spend, go anywhere else.
This was one of the worst experiences Ive had at this place. The waitress was not attentive, and it was a slow night. There were about 7 of us but we all ordered chicken wings & fries, however it took so long for each of us to get our food. Lets just say we didnt all eat together. I bragged about this restaurant but I was embarrassed I picked it. I usually love this place but alot of things have changed. I dont know if Ill be back. Maybe takeout...🤷🏾♀️
I had a great time during the Jamaican Event that took place on December 30th. Did a LOT of dancing lol. I would recommend going here if you are trying to get out of your element and try something different. Give it a try!
This is hands down the best spot for African cuisine in Detroit! Great staff, great music, great atmosphere! I never visit without making a stop here. My fav is the Suya followed by the Egusi soup. I even tried ordering it through the mail and got it in 3 days. Still fresh and tastes just as good 👍
Service was sub par. I ordered a drink with my Neal and never received it. Eventually I had to go to the bar and ask for my drink. At that time the waitress had no idea that she had received an order from the kitchen which made no sense. At that point I had to show my receipt for proof of purchase and even then, it still took 15 minutes to be served. All in all the food was good but the service was terrible and they aren’t even understaffed. They need to be retrained in customer service.
This place is absolutely amazing. I love the Jerk Chicken, the drinks are always, and I have never had anything I didnt like there. The waitresses are absolutely beautiful and so very nice the music is banging its just a great place ran by amazing people who make you feel welcome so welcome you never wanna leave. And dont get me started on the seasoning amazing
Great food. Waitress was awesome. Jerk wings were 🔥. Will be returning soon to try some other items definitely.
Picked up carry out from this gem on a whim. A friendly voice on the other side of the phone gave me recommendations since it was my first time ordering. The jerk chicken wings and fried rice were simply amazing. If you haven’t gone yet, you should definitely visit!
Really great food! Liz was our server and she did an awesome job explaining the menu and what we might like. She was very attentive and helpful! The food was awesome I was able to try two of the rice dishes (one with jerk chicken and the other with beef) both were very tasty and authentic. I recommend adding on the plaintain side dish(sp?). Very good addition to the meal to sweeten things up. I will definitely be back and look forward to seeing some live music next time (we came really early so they werent playing yet).
Throw back Thursday is hot and great banging. The Djs continue to make the atmosphere even better. THEY JUST CLOSE early.
What an awesome experience! The food was delicious, and it was really nice to try authentic African cuisine. Our whole family loved it. I will definitely be ordering Kola in our future!
I ordered the coconut rice with jerk chicken and it came with enough rice for the entire table (about 2 cups) and a small piece of chicken. Food was overpriced for what it was (my entree was mainly rice for $16). Didn’t taste authentic either. Not sure what to say about their “ambiance” bc it was really run down with bad lighting. The food arrived in styrofoam plates and they gave plastic utensils and styrofoam cups. Also, just from observation, I believe Saturday nights are their seniors night.
Drink was alright, a bit pricey. Parking was decent, music was good and enjoyed being taught a few moves from the instructor, and food was decent. Small venue but youll have major fun while youre there..
I received my order via mail the very next day. Everything was still intact. Im very impressed with the packaging. Its top notch. Yall did an amazing job! My suya even came with fresh onions, tomatoes and It was scrumptious. My family and I enjoyed every single bite. Liz is amazing! Her customer service deserves some accolades. Thank you Kola restaurant. I shall be back!
It was okay, the goat meat meat was dry, plantain was dry and the egusi soup was fishing tasting it made me burp all night and today . I asked for egusi soup with goat meat but they didnt mix the two together. This is my 3rd time eating Nigerian food. The first two times the food was very good, the right texture, goat meat was very tender and plaintain was moist and sweet but I bought it from a restaurant on Schoolcraft and Inkster Road I cant remember the name of the place. The reason why Im doing a review its because I drove all the way from Wayne Michigan to Farmington Hills because the young lady on the phone said the food is very good and I wont be disappointed.
The food’s amazing, the service is warm, this place feels like home! My son really enjoyed his food, and Sarita was super nice to us!! I’d recommend this place to anyone looking for a West African flavor punch in the mouth! Also, nightlife is cool here, too!
Im from out of state and my boyfriend is from Nigeria we were on a mini bae cay we Google looking for African places and this was the first one to come up and I tell you I loved it.Anytime we are in Michigan for sure stop by this place every single time the food was great the atmosphere was a vibe and everyone was so friendly the only one complaint I had is I wish the food was a bit spicier
The atmosphere is very ire/laid back. I was there on a Saturday night and they have ballroom and hustle lessons. Very nice!. Now food and drink- awefull! The food was terribly dry. I had coconut rice with black eye peas?! It was dry. Plantain normally has the texture of candy yams, these were roasted, not in the skin. Dry. The chicken had jerk sauce on the top, oven baked, could not taste jerk seasonings it was also dry. I notice that several people ordered wings and fries, must be the best thing to order. The planters rum punch, the juice mixture was good, could not taste any rum. My bill $28.90. Not worth it! Ill stick with The Jamaican Pot to eat and go to Kola to dance.
Being new in town I googled live music locations in the Detroit metropolitan area and found this business establishment. After doing my research, (reviews & social media) I decided to give it a try. It was worth patronizing and I will definitely go back for happy hour, live music and the African food.
The music is nice. I went here for a friends birthday/going away party. I did try the food it was okay. The rice is really spicy amd the plaintains are meduim sweet. The dj was super nice. There is a cover charge for women after 11 so i suggest getting there before hand. They have a nice sized dance floor and a decent amount of seating. Its kind of a homey place with lots of artwork on the walls. I would go again. The crowd was chill for a Saturday night but it got hyper the later it got.
I worked with Kola since before the Grand Opening Dec. 7th 2013 as a Bartender. The short time I was there I absolutely love the place and my co-workers. The Positive: Great Food, Service, Music, Atmosphere & Staff. The Negative: Lack of Professionalism from the Managing Staff. There was a meeting in which we where able to discuss problems and how to make a solution. I was told, Its all about teamwork end of conversation. Teamwork was presented and that was the end of my employment. They have a habit in terminating those that express their feelings w/o notice. Instead of informing you of your discharge, they play with folks lively hood. I had great customers and even promoted this place. But I wish I never put as much effort as I did and furthermore never been as loyal. I do encourage you to visit Kola, but if you have a favorite server/bartender, Im sure you wont see them again.
I ordered Ayamase, but I got bell pepper stew. I was expecting spicy and there was none. In their defense, it tasted nice, but it need that hotness, that spice that makes it ayamase. The portions are also kinda small for the price.
Kola is a huge yes !! This place is off the chain. It has a comfortable setting , great live music , sports on the t.v. , a bar , amazing service and the food was fantastic!! I arrived during the night time and there was nothing but good Caribbean island style music all night . I would love to visit this place once again!! Its also a really good place to take a date and have a intimate time on the dance floor
Ive only gone for the house music on Thursdays, & its the best Ive heard in years. I love it.
I’m giving this restaurant a 3 because the Rum punch and Red Snapper was delicious. ( Red Snapper was cooked when we ordered it)But everything else seemed to be prepared earlier/ and or the day before. Every thing else curry goat, jerk chicken, curry chicken, oxtails and meat pies all warm on the outside and cold in the middle. Sorry but I will not spend $200 again on leftovers
This is my second time at Kola and the staff is friendly and attentive, the ambiance is just right and the food is amazing! It exceeded all my expectations. I would highly recommend checking the one and only Afro Caribbean restaurant in the Detroit Metro Area....
I love Kolas Restaurant and Ultra lounge. I go there when I can. I love Friday nights because of the reggae music and the food is excellent. Its always fun to see and experience the Bollywood nights and the watch the different diversity of groups who patronize the place. The owner is always well dressed, well mannered and always greets you at the door or your table, listens, and solves any issue which (in my opinion are none) quickly and efficiently. I take my friends from out of town to Kolas and they love the place. Its the best place for fun, good music,(some times) dance classes, workshops, and great atmosphere ;)
The atmosphere is nice, the drinks and the food was good, not to mention that happy hour is until 8 ...and they have one of the best dance instructors in the world. My family and friends had a blast!
Very refreshing to have a place to get traditional Nigerian and Caribbean food. The atmosphere is great as they usually have a DJ (that plays all the current jams). It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat or to have a few drinks. The jerk chicken wings are EXCELLENT!
I just have to say how impressed I am, not only by the food, but by the generosity of the owner! Recently the owner provided meals to the entire staff, where I work, All 3 shifts. For us, considered essential personel, acts like this are extremely rare. I will definitely be frequenting this establishment , as soon as possible.!
Love the atmosphere and the waitresses were very friendly and attentive. Also the DJ(Lisa Sol) is great at spinning the 1, 2s. Drinks were very good not watered down.
Servers need to make Rounds! You will make more money & more tips that way! No one came to me after my food was served! I had to go to the back to check out!
My ex brought me here and they have some really good food its spicy but it is delicious. But I know that I will never go again because that was a special place to me that me and her would go to well one of the special places. Dang, I miss her this place puts good memories of me and her in my heart and mind Patricia Ann Boshelle Lewis thanks for sharing this good place with me.
Tell you the truth, they are rip off and food is not as good as it seems . They charge me $42.99 for two orders. And they never give me my change back, and they never apologize for over charging me. Food suck.(P.S. my mother in law is Ghanaian and she makes the best goat stew and jollof rice)
I ordered Kola fries, rice, oxtails, and a meat pie. Kola fries are plain old fries, no special seasoning or sauce. The jaloff rice was very spicy, the oxtails were quite fatty but tender, the meat pie had been warmed in the microwave too long because the edges were so hard that I could not chew them. But the music and the vibe was nice.
Went to this godforsaken place and sat down for 20 minutes but no one even cared to say anything to us. We drove an hour from Toledo. They attend only to their regular customers. If there was 0 star I would give it. The waitress shows up and had the audacity to tell us they were closing at midnight. We sat down for about 20 minutes but no one acknowledged us.We had called to let them know that we were on our way. I would not recommend that restaurant to the devil, thats how terrible they were.
Food and drinks were really good! The waitress kept us updated on the progress of our orders and her recommendations were perfect. Will definitely be back.
This place was a very interesting place. Parking was hard but once you get inside the music was good and the server for awesome. They make your drinks right and dont hold back. Also the food was good but a bit pricey
Love Kola! Whether its the weekday or weekend! Always a great time especially when serviced by our favorite Bartender/Server Cousin She ensures youre attended to and have a great time. Love her! Cousln makes you feel like family!
Food was good. Music was GREAT!!...Service was a little slow but the bartender was nice. Will definitely come back and I hope they have more help at the bar!
At Kolas Lounge, the foods are prepared to perfection. The Ayamase stew is my all-time favorite and then there is their mouth-watering Egusi and Goat Meat soup. Their delicious Jollof rice and Moi-Moi, their snail stew and yummy Meat Pie snack. Every meal is just soooo tasty and very well prepared.I also take advantage of their excellent catering services and the convenience of having delicious meals, delivered to my home!!!Seriously, I encourage everyone to visit Kola’s lounge and when you do, make sure you ask for Dominique. She’s super friendly, very smart, extremely knowledgeable about their West African Cuisine - she’ll make sure you feel really welcome. They treat you like family at Kolas Lounge. Trust me, you’ll have a great time.Remember, ask for Dominique...she’ll hook you up!They get a 10 star rating from me!!
Lotta fat chix...but thats Michigan for you. The drinks are way overpriced, but thats clubs. The staff is mostly nice, sweet ladies, lackluster coordinating though. I dont know. I could see how others would like it, but the theme here is subcommon. Not trash, not necessarily bad, but not that great either. If youre an underaverage Joe, then you might find some love here. A whole lotta love. 😂
The jollof rice is great but everything else did not taste like anything Nigerian. Not sure if this more of an American restaurant with Nigerian fusions of flavors or what but it wasn’t what I expected at all. I drove quite a distance. I got a side of jollof rice paid $9 for it. The smallest rice I ever received, the container wasn’t even full. Looked like a spoon full of rice very disappointed in the portion. The Suya was just not flavorful, tasted like grilled beef with no seasoning even the seasoning they add on the side didn’t do justice. My husband asked for Egusi with pounded yam she said they didn’t have any she could give him rice instead , if you’re Nigerian you know that just doesn’t go well. I told him not to get it. Well moral of the story if you don’t see many people in the restaurant ordering or waiting the food probably isn’t that great. Lesson learned.
Wonderful atmosphere. Great service and excellent food! Also, try their catering menu for parties large or small.... they will accommodate all of your needs. They never disappoint us!
I do not like giving bad reviews but this place really needs to change a few things. Im not sure if I just came on a bad day but this was the worst resteraunt experience I have ever had. The ambiance and place it self was fine. The service was alright but the food was frighteningly bad. We order snails as an appetizer which was 13.00, there was not a single part of the snail that was not hard or even edible. My boyfriend and I are big on snails and know that they can be prepared in different ways but there was no way to eat any of our dish. Then we ordered coffee and our server hands us two cups of warm water and two plastic containers of instant coffee. It wasnt even good instant coffee, they should of at least poured the coffee into the water in the back of the resteraunt. My boyfriend tried adding cream to his coffee and the cream was clumpy and spoiled. Then our main dishes came out. I got the jerk chicken and plantains and he got the goat and plantains. The fried plantains were soft and tasted as if they had been out for a while and the goat had only fat on it and barely any meat. My jerk chicken was okay but I was so shocked on how a place could be ran like that.
I was so excited to try Kolas! The buzz has been going through the community for some time and I had not had the chance to check it out until recently. I patronize different African cuisine restaurants and I must say I am truly disappointed by my experience. The food was not fresh and appeared to be nearly warm upon receiving take-out. The Suya beef was just barbecued steak with soggy tomatoes and onions soaking in meat juice along side of a small portion of seasoning. The egusi had more watermelon seeds than spinach and a strong fish seasoning/oil to it. The pounded yam was very small in comparison to the amount of soup/stew provided. The chicken stew was a piece of baked chicken with spicy tomato sauce on it. Nothing special and tasted old as if it had been warmed up and sold. In comparison to similar restaurants in Michigan that sell African food, the Kola Restaurant did not speak to culture through their cuisine. I hope things change as it is has great potential.
The jerk chicken my partner had was great, but the server was very rude and not professional. I ordered the curry chicken and fried rice which was presented very sloppy. Its was horrible no flavor and cold. I had to ask for a refill on my water on 3 different occasions! I asked the waiter to take my plate and I reordered the jerk chicken. The waiter instantly got an attitude and took forever, taking my plate and bringing out my new order. My bill came to 27.00 and some change, I had a Groupon for 30.00, she tried to refuse my Groupon cause my bill was not 30.00 or more. But no where on Groupon it says you must spend 30.00 or more. Overall bad experience, poor service, and horrible curry chicken, and she got no tip! In my personal opinion she had a problem with people who lives an alternative life style....
I always order stewed goat and rice, and it never disappoints, 😋Being from Namibia , Africa ,the food reminds me of home. Service is slow, but the hostesses are always really kind and attentive. So if youre looking for some African cuisines Kola is surely the place.
The wait staff was terrible we had to wait too long to get service. We ask the waitress to give us 5 minutes, but 5 minutes turned into 20 minutes therefore I went to the counter to place my order. She was busy texting that she didnt realize I was standing there. The food I selected was fair. The joloff rice was brown, I was used to it being yellow and it didnt have much flavor. The best part of the evening was the D.J.
As a Nigerian citizen... this place is great news for your needs. This is one of the best things nearest home...Both myself and my son were enroute to Southfield Michigan.. when we stopped by for Lunch. The customer service representative was receptive and supportive...They explained all the available menu and were quick to serve us...The place also have a lounge and they have different events for the Xmas and the New year.
Nice place to eat, drink and listen to one of the hypest, energetic & overall coolest DJs out!! Good vibes, all of the staff & waitresses were very friendly/like family friendly!
As a regular and friend of the owner I have to say that Im disappointed and will not ever be going back to this restaurant again. The food isnt bad , however customer service has gotten excessively worse over time. For one, this is the third time that I have made a take out order only to go home and find out that there is again an order missing. Once I can forgive but three times !!!!!! Ridiculous especially based on pricing . I was really upset of the response I gotten when I called and talked to one of the manager there .its like no big deal. I live an hour away, not the first time !!!!! No effort nor remedy was taken to even fix it . An appropriate apology would had suffice which I never gotten . Sadly, I even contacted the owner to inform him of all this but never got a response. As African, Im a big sponsor of African restaurants, however customer service is critical . If i had gotten a proper apology , or response i would had never posted such an extended review. After all , despite the price I have been going there for years but enough is enough . Customer service truly goes a long way .
I like the place... Its a little tight but all in all a nice place to watch sporting events and live music... The food was good too... Will be coming back with clients...😊
I have been to Kola many times over the years traveling in from Ohio. Recently, I tried out Kola’s out of town delivery service. The food arrived within 24 hours, was packed well and freshly frozen upon arrival. My favorite dish, Suya, tasted just as good as it does in person. The Jollof Rice was also very good and held up well during transit. I will definitely order another shipment soon to hold me over until I can get back to Kola in person. Whether your local or from out of town, I definite recommend Kola when your in the mood for great West African cuisine.
Ive visited Kola several times for dinner and special events. My most recent visit was on a Saturday to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. The menu included chicken, jollof rice and salad. The food was delicious as always. Thanks to the Kola team for wonderful time!
Thursday is my preferred night out, and I enjoy it. You never know what type of crowd youll run into. The food is always good
I have nothing but high praises for Liz, the manager at Kola Restaurant & Ultra Lounge. So, there I was in San Diego, CA, surfing the Internet at 2 am, when I came across this Nigerian restaurant offering to ship Nigerian food to anywhere in the United States. I could not believe my eyes. I had to test this proposition.I put in a big order that included, moin moin, suya, jollof rice, edikang ikong soup with assorted meat, egusi soup with assorted meat, dodo (fried plantain), smothered turkey, and a couple of other food items.I wanted to test the ship all over the U.S. promise. You better believe that Liz shipped my order from Michigan to California in proper wraps, properly packaged boxes and ice inserts to preserve the food. I was very impressed.I was very pleased with the stuff I have already eaten. The moin moin was delicious. Ordered so much that I ate it for breakfast for a week. I enjoyed the suya. Oh . . . the suya spice was awesome just like I remember it growing up in Nigeria. The spice makes the suya very delicious.I have put the rest of the order in the freezer for now but can imagine how delicious they are, based on the dishes I already tasted.I give Kola Restaurant & Lounge FIVE STARS for delicious meals and great service.
The food was really delicious and fresh. The staff is nice and respectful. As always, theres always some dance practice going on in the background. Overall, a great experience!
The atmosphere, the food, the people it was amazing I recommend this venue for anyone. Almost a prefect blend of cultures. In addition my server Brittany was amazing the whole evening, you go !
Dominique the manager is amazing. Also, Ebony. They made my night complete after a rough two weeks. I will be back.
The music was 🔥. They had a good variety of food. I had the fried plantains which were delicious and a side of jollof rice. My friends had wings, jerk chicken and oxtails.
Kola is NICE! Afrobeat all night. Dont request anything. It will take 2 hours for the dj to play it. That is why I did not rate it 5 stars. Food is really good. Nice atmosphere to hug up with your date, or go out with your crew and enjoy each others company.
Great experience everytime i come there. Love the ballroom and hustle from 5 to 9 with DJ BJ. This makes my day after a long week. We are all family. Love it
I came with high expectations. My wife has bragged about this place.for.months.Well, after waiting 45 min on a PARTIAL SERVING, my daughter had to wait on her wings (20 min).My rice and beans was not fresh.Asked for a manager, NONE WAS AVAILABLE. So my 9nly choice was to keep my mouth shut for fear of them harming my daughters wings.Dont come here HUNGRY.TWO PIECES OF CHICKEN AND A SERVING OF RICE, NO VEGGIES. NO OTHER SIDES ALL FOR 18.00.HAD I KNOWN BEFORE HAND I WOULD HAVE STAYED HOME.
Kola has changed over the years. A few years ago, it was a guaranteed Saturday night party with lots of people (but not overcrowded) and great African music. But the last few times Ive gone Saturday night, it has been very empty. I think this is due to several factors:DJs who played too much American music to appeal to broader audiences. People started going to American venues for half the price.Cover charge is pricey. It was worth it when I knew what I was getting, but less and less so.
A very nice place to visit for African and Caribbean music, food and activities. You have to visit if you want to taste the famous Nigerian jollof rice, African fried rice and suya. It will be very nice though if they can lower the music volume a lot. Music does not have to be very loud to be enjoyed, it will just become noise.
I went here on a blind date with a Naija man..on a Saturday night. He recommended the fried rice and I chose stewed goat because that’s my favorite. I was very disappointed to get mostly FAT on my meat. For a $20 dish, I thought I would get more meat. Not to mention the wait was well over 40 minutes
It seems to be my go to place for when I desire a particular vibe. Reggae, soca, Dancehall and lovers rock. Yaaassss!!!!! Music for my soul. The deejays are good. Entertainment wise, I always enjoy myself. For food, I think theyre are a bit pricey. The thing is, I have to refuel after expending all that energy. So I cannot avoid the food expense even when I make sure to get my fill at home. Their fries and wings are on point, but expensive, and not enough wings for the cost. Management may want to look into that.
In the age of COVID I am so happy that Kola offers a food shipping option for the out-of-staters such as myself to enjoy the tastes of good African and Caribbean cuisine. When the food arrived in mail it was insulated properly so arrived frozen/cold. The meats (Suya and Jerk Chicken) were separately vacuum sealed so they werent spilled in the packaging. The spices and sauce were also packaged separately so they werent messy. I just warmed the food, added the spices and sauce and I was in business. Most importantly the food is great!! Will be repeat customer.
I really enjoyed my time at Kola Restaurant, they had a very nice Jazz band and vocalist that night and the show was fantastic. Just sad they ran out of curry chicken before I got there.. Overall it was a great experience.
Kola is a nice place to eat some Nigerian and Caribbean food while listening to afrobeats and top 40 music. Seems to always be some sort of function going on. I notice a lot of Frats and sororitys have events there. On Friday there is a live band. Saturday is ballroom and hustle lessons from 5-9 and around 10 the DJ comes in. He plays the video along with the music. I love a DJ that does that! Food: There is a restaurant side and lounge side. You seat yourself. My personal favorites are the chicken wings (seasoned soooo good), jollof rice, coconut rice and peas, plantain and stew, and the beef suya. The waitresses and bartenders are nice. Bar: Nice size bar. The bar has many options. Liquor, beer, and wine. The house drink is the rum punch. Its sweet and strong.
Great food, chill atmosphere & nice people. The chicken and jollof rice were delicious, as was the egusi I ordered to go. Definitely worth the trip.
First time in Michigan detroit area. Im Jamaican so it was very pleasant to find this very clean, welcoming atmosphere, good food Restaraunt within a quick 5 minute walk from my hotel. I went late evening and they had a live band up until around 9pm. Then the dj took over and by then it was more of a night club /lounge type atmosphere. Everyone danced and had a great time and the vibe was just easygoing and mello. Check it out! If in the area. You will like if not love it.
Kola is hands-down the best African restaurant in metro Detroit. Great place for private meetings, entertainment and food. Egusi, edikangikong, moi-moi and suya is highly recommended. Nice place to party with African vibe. My friends and family love it especially weekends.
The best Nigerian spot in town💯
